This movie is fantastic, of course. Would you expect anything different from Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Farrell? All three of these actors shine, as well as Jerry Stiller (George Costanza's dad in Seinfeld, and Ben's dad). This is an original comedy, that is short, but sweet. Left me wanting more.
"This is one of those movies you either get the sensibility of or you justdon't."For those of you who don't "get" lousy puns, and joke you've already seenbefore, this really is not a good movie. Just not funny. It is a mediocreSaturday Night Live sketch gone on an hour+ too long.
As soon as you put the DVD in the machine, the fun starts. The film had me laughing out loud, and the extras are the best on any DVD I have ever seen - and I own hundreds. This is how DVDs should be put together - even the commentary is entertaining. Ben Stiller is one clever guy.
I have tried to watch this movie about 4 times now. I thought maybe Ididn't "get" it. I realise that I do get it though and I don't want it.I find that Ben Stiller is one of the most irritating "comic" actors .He is overrated to a ridiculous degree. He tried to blame the originalfailure at the box office on the fact it was released just before 9/11but that is a cop-out. The script is painfully unfunny and stuffing afilm with cameos only serves as a prop to hold up the weakness of thewhole venture. I tried to concentrate on it but there was reallynothing to watch. Kudos to the filmmakers for being able to get so manystars to appear in it but that is really not enough to save it. Imanaged to get through 30 minutes this time before I thought to myself,"Do you really want to waste minutes of your precious life watchingthis pile of faeces?" I came to the conclusion that I did not. As forStiller-wake up people the Emperor has no clothes. Just because he hasconnections to "show biz" through his family was never any reason tolaud him as a comic genius. Do NOT get me started with Will Ferrelleither!! Owen Wilson has made lots of stinkers too but somehow I findhim more appealing than Stiller on every level. There is not even asmile in this film let alone any laughs.
.....at playing the same character in every movie! Hey, hear Ben talk softly AGAIN, act stupid AGAIN, keep one eye half open AGAIN! Ben stole my money AGAIN!The only redeeming feature of this...umm..feature...is the model guys playing splish splash with the gasoline. Too bad Ben wasn't closer to them. See my other reviews if you love Ben Stiller.
This movie is what that other member said just what you need to forget yourproblems it is VERY funny! Most of the time I was laughing but also sayingto myself What The Hell?? Like everybody else who was watching. You cannothelp but laugh at how messed up this movie is! Ben Stiller has provenhimself worthy by my standards, and he needs to make more movies. I hope hedoes soon. Once again Roger Ebert just doesnt get it.
"Zoolander" is a film for idiots like me.I like to think of myself as anidiot for watching this film. The fact that I call myself an idiot forwatching this film is a means of rewarding myself. This is a movie about anidiot. That idiot is Derek Zoolander whom in the course of the film isbrainwashed to kill the prime minister of Malaysia. The entire film seems tofocus on humorous points that I though were funny and Ben Stiller washilarious in the title role.I had alot of fun watching this film because theway I see it,I was watching myself. No I don't picture myself walking down afasion hall as a model, but I do picture myself as an idiot."Zoolander"delivers some funny entertaining scenes and the film wasentertaining."Zoolander" is a film for idiots like me and I am proud to beone.
I generally can't stand Ben Stiller movies. They are usually far too crass for my enjoyment and I've turned more than one of his movies off early. I'd heard good things about this from my wife's family over in England (having spent many years living in England my sense of humor slants in that direction and British humor IS different) so I gave it a shot. Zoolander has some really great visual moments (in the coal mine hiding against the wall covered in black coal dust and then opening those eyes and grinning) and lots of subtle gags about vantity. David Duchovny as the world's greatest hand model "We're an entirely different kind of animal" was literally unrecognizable until he started to speak. Some of the dialog in the "tea party" scene was unecessary but it wasn't too offensive really. There are many momentary cameos in Zoolander, I'm sure I didn't catch them all. I saw Billy Zane, David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz, Claudia Shiffrin (I think) and a bunch of other people I recognized but couldn't name. The scene at the gas station with the male models when a harmless game of flinging winshield washer fluid at one another escalates into playfully spraying/drenching one another with gasoline (with Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go playing in the background) in an all out gasoline war... I had tears in my eyes, it was so ridiculous, and laughed 'til I cried again when they showed the memorial fountain for the gasoline warriors at the "Zoolander School for Children Who Can't Read Good and Want to Learn Other Stuff" Hilarious! One of the funniest gag scenes of all time, really!Don't mind the professional critics and their bad reviews, they often get it wrong and did this time. Yes it is over the top silly but in a way that will make you laugh yourself silly.
The best advice I can give anyone is to anyone is give this movie achance.Don't go into it expecting your run of the mill Jim Carrey slapstickroutine, although if that is all you want you will not be disappointed. Much ofthismovie relies on how (un)smart the character dialogue is. In my opinion itisthe small details that raises this movie above other slapstick comedy's.Payspecial attention to facial expressions other than "magnum" etc.Stiller'sface after he has stumbled through a sentence is priceless. Thesupportingcast is excellent as well. Ferrell as Mugatu and Wilson as Hansel arepriceless. One warning it will be impossible to take Owen Wilsonseriouslyin any other movie after seeing Zoolander.Great film for all ages, silly and smart at the same time and definitelyunderrated. And don't forget the DVD outakes, Mugatuespecially.
Ben Stiller can be very funny, and has a natural flair for comedy, both interms of acting and directing, but this attempt at spoofing the fashionindustry doesn't achieve the level of irony and humour it could have. Themain weakness? The script could have been richer and, well, much funnier. In 'Derek Zoolander', Stiller creates a loveably dumb character, a top malemodel who is all beauty and no brains. But it works out as little more thana one-joke movie, and even that one joke (that models are dumb) is stretchedtoo thin to be really funny. Mike Myers did the whole malevanity-cum-dumbness routine much more richly with Austin Powers. Having said all that, however, the movie is almost worth watching for theplot device in the climax alone. OK, so it's Stiller, and thus watchable, but with all that talent there (Imean, even Stiller's dad is played by Jon Voight), it could have been muchbetter. Owen Wilson is good, though, as the blonde supermodel Hansel, andthe movie is an amiable way to pass an evening. But it isn't Stiller's bestwork.
Probably the best film of the year. The trick is not to take it seriously,it isn't meant to be a serious film. If you do that, you'll love it. Ifyoudon't then see a psychiatrist. The D.V.D. is also excellent with a lot of special features (including theTV appearances of Derek) and a hilarious introduction from 'DerekZoolander'when you put the D.V.D. in the machine.Quality stuff.
Ben Stiller takes the crack at spoofing the model world in this filmversion where he plays Derek Zoolander, one of the top male models.Owen Wilson also plays his rival. Derek's not bright at all and itshould come as no surprise. Will Ferrell has a supporting role as theman who is set to kill the prime minister of Malaysia using abrainwashed Zoolander. Anyway, it's reminiscent of the ManchurianCandidate. Christine Taylor from the Brady Bunch films and WeddingSinger, plays a reporter. She really is quite identical to MaureenMcCormick and could be her daughter. Ben's dad, Jerry Stiller, is alsoin the film as manager Holstein and his mother, Anne Meara, has acameo. It's quite hilarious at times and downright silly. Jon Voigtplays Derek's hard-working blue collar father who is ashamed of hisson's chosen career.
This was better than i expected. I was slightly disappointed with MysteryMen, and completely comatose in front of Meet the Parents, which is sadconsidering the things Ben Stiller can do. But this was refreshinglyfunny, and i find the lines are endlessly quotable (a quality that i value quitehighly regarding comedies). Good parts played by all. Stiller doesstupiditywith aplombe and i always find owen wilson very easy to watch.8/10"Audi-whatty?"
It's a one-joke movie -- models are vain, bulimic morons -- and it wears out faster than a pair of paper panties.
It's not plot heavy or brainy, just a cute comedy that makes you suspect Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson have read too many Cosmo and Vanity Fair interviews of female Super Models assuming that and explaining why they're so great, and not just because "they're incredibly good-looking." Watching these guys imitate the mannerisms and trite speech of these most, uh, vacuous of celebrities is hilarious. Look for Wilson as supermodel Hansel dressed as an angel at the VH1 awards trying to emote his awareness and spirituality and don't forget to note the incredible differences between Zoolander's copyrighted "looks" like "Blue Steel" and the much awaited "Magnum."
In a word, innane. In two words, sophomoric and stupid. Don't bother. Between over the top portrayals and no perceivable plot, this is a waste by any standard.
This film is certainly not everybodies cup of tea! Lots and lots of peoplewill loath this film in a big ass kind of way! But I loved Zoolander verymuch! I love Ben Stiller films very much and when he combines his talentswith his family, friends and icons doing Stiller a favor it makes Zoolandera better movie to watch!Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson basically poke fun (in a nice way) towards thedirection of the fashion industry. The story is great all be it controversial!I beg people to watch this for what it is... a comedy! It's not trying to beinterlectual or trying to win an academy award...it's trying to makeaudiences laugh... and it does!FOR WHAT IT IS & MAKING ME LAUGH8/10
Zoolander is one of the funniest guys you'll ever see in a movie, and hisdad, from Seinfeld, is also a great guy. His voice, with the adding of'BlueSteel' (and also Magnum, the Derek Zoolander School for kids who can't readgood and want to do other stuff better, and Will Ferrel and Mugatu) makeZoolander the comedy of the year!!!!
Ben Stiller created the `Derek Zoolander' character for a fiveminutesketch on the VH1 Fashion Awards. The antics of the incrediblystupidmale model was a big hit, and so they decided to greenlight afulllength movie about the character. But the producer's overlookedonething. Derek Zoolander is a one-joke character. And so itsnosurprise that the full length movie built around him fallsflatterthan a bad perm.I was amazed by how few laughs this movie had. And the few jokesthatwere in `Zoolander,' have already been revealed in the trailer! Now`Zoolander' does have its moments, the celebrity cameos forexample, are funny. But they are the exception. So if someone asks you togosee `Zoolander,' runway. I mean, run away! 2 stars out of 5.
Though I had a comment on this movie before, I have to say again, that itwas a disappointment and I would recommend this if you don't want to lookinto the world of stupidity. The only good thing really about the movie wasthat it had extremely good potential, but it really blew it. It's one ofthose movies where your phsyced about it, but when you it's blah... A lot oftalent was wasted in the movie. It had a pretty good cast, not great, and agood modern comedian, Ben Stiller. Ben Stiller has done much better in hiscareer. He was great in Keeping the Faith and Meet the Parents. I didn't seeSomething About Mary, but it sounds hilarious from what I here on this site.I'm guessing it is, because it's done by the Farrely Brothers who createdthe comedy which is destined or already is a comedy classic Dumb & Dumber. But anyways with Zoolander, it's disappointing. If you want to see a goodcomedy brought to you in 2001 see Rat Race. That was one of the mostpleasantly surprising movies I've seen in a while too. Another pleasantsurprise from 2001 was Legally Blonde. Zoolander is a disappointingsurprise. Zoolander's rating which has lowered from my last review is now3/10.
