Nick's oversized feet balloon away from his body, as if they're trying to separate themselves from this unbelievably dumb guy. Cera's playing dumb again -- dumb as a fox. But this time, we're in on the joke.

Michael Cera and the rest of the cast lift Youth in Revolt beyond the cutesy pie piecemeal affectations. As a result, what could have been great is only marginally good.

the book

this movie was not nearly as good as the book. it was almost like therewasn't even a book, so for the movie, not very good at all but if youhadn't read the book then i guess it would have been OK at best. noneof the other characters had any real roles in the movie besides nick.disappointing. in my opinion the humor didn't really translate onto thescreen as well as i had thought. they even left some of the charactersout of the entire movie itself. i think they should have put a coupleof more with scenes with lefty since there was one big part involvinghim in the book. they needed to give the characters more depth to makeit play out better but oh well.i would hate for them to make a secondfilm of this if this is what its going to look like.

Barely fresh, Youth in Revolt stars Michael Cera pretty much playing the same character he always plays. The first act was hilarious but then goes downhill.

Funny....but Cera has got to choose a new character soon

Youth in Revolt definitely had it's funny parts, and to my surprise isfilled with a pretty good cast. The movie portrays his alterpersonalities so well with one being the more passive gentle one, andthe other being the sexually deprived urge. More importantly though Ijust think that Micheal Cera needs to choose a different character toportray in his movies. In many ways this movie has many similarities to"Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist". He's a virgin. Meets a new girl.She takes it. He plays the guy who's too tenderhearted to be a jerk,and has the same weird interests that the female has and they click andfall in love.Youth in Revolt was funny mainly because of the other cast membersfunny lines and mishaps, however Cera had his too. He is funny butneeds to show that humor in a different role than the tenderheartedvirgin in his movies.

Simply funny and smart

It's a good thing that comedies are slowly coming out of thestereotypes like cliché characters, fake emotions and boring all happytoo long meaningless endings. Don't be fooled that this is movie forteens only; there is lot more here going on.Great transformation by Michael Cera, well developed main andsupporting characters and very funny appearances by excellent andproved actors. The story is simple but goes through many changes in itmaking it unique in its genre, successfully escaping the traps set bythe movies that have already told this story. This movie like theprevious ones has hilarious situations and that is the onlyresemblance, but apart from them it has developed romance, realemotions, smart and funny dialogs and is more mature.

Pleasant surprise

Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a 16-year-old who is an outcast of hisgeneration. He meets Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), anintellectual and beautiful girl. The only people really standing in hisway are Sheeni's poetry-writing ex-boyfriend Trent (Jonathan B.Wright), Nick's temperamental divorced parents (Steve Buscemi and JeanSmart), and Nick's mom's boyfriends (Zach Galifianakis and Ray Liotta).When Nick realizes she is not interested, he comes up with analter-ego, named François Dillinger, who resembles Nick, but has blueeyes, a mustache, a deeper voice, and a player/bad boy attitude to helphim with his pursuit of Sheeni. But when François makes Nick a wantedcriminal, everything spins out of control.Youth in Revolt was actually a pleasant surprise. A nice little comedythat is at least one or two notches above the swarm of comediesreleased every year. The film is quite entertaining and funny. Morequirky then funny but that doesn't mean you won't laugh out loud fromthat time to time. Just don't expect a riot. Most of the jokes are moreon the clever/ironic side then just the usual cut and dry crude jokethat seem to be so in vogue. The entire cast did a great job but Michael Cera obviously stands out.He's a bit one note during the entire film but that actually works inhis favor since he can then compensate and go a bit over the top withthe François persona. Overall, nothing outstanding but a nice watch.7/10

Between delightful sequences of animation, vibrant performances by the likes of Justin Long, Fred Willard and Ray Liotta, and Arteta's mastery over comic tones ranging from the sensitive to the surreal, this is the rare movie one doesn't want to end.

3 1/2 stars for an above average romantic comedy & an early look at Rooney Mara

Somehow I never got around to seeing this in the theaters so it finally arrived on Blu ray and I'm pleasantly surprised. On the downside, we see Michael Cera playing the same character again. That is, the high school geek who hasn't been laid. He "outruns his coverage" - I love that line - while on a summer break by the lake. Portia Doubleday plays the love interest and she's very good. Throw in a supporting cast like Fred Willard, Steve Buscemi, Justin Long, Zach Galifianakis and others and you have an interesting and fun time. There's nothing mind bending here, just a straight forward teen romcom that is better than most.Also watch for Rooney Mara as the high school roommate of Portia's character. She has a small role but is destined for stardom in the remake of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" playing Lisbeth Salander. I can now envision her in the role.

francois is a bad ***.

This review is from: Youth in Revolt (DVD) the only way i can compare this to another movie is mixing fight club with napolean dynamite by far the best part of this movie is francois. with his attitude of not caring what anyone else thinks. i was thinking this movie was another michael cera movie where hes the awkward teen which it is some what but a lot diffrent with him being a bad *** in this movie. all the surrounding actors were great in this movie. i was optimistic about this movie but after seeing a preview i decided to rent it this movie was a lot better then what i thought which is why im going to buy this movie. this is cera best role ive seen him play and this movie makes me want to watch his next movie scott pilgrim vs the world.

A great cult film

Youth in Revolt is the adaptation of C.D. Paynes cult book by the same title. It follows the storyline of his first three novellas (later combined into a single book) that follow a young man by the name of Nick Twisp, who after discovering the love of his life does whatever he must to stay with her.The film itself is a far cry from the hilarious prose of the witty novel that inspired it. However by itself, Youth in Revolt is surely a great romantic comedy, and Michael Cera's best performance to date. If you are looking for a short, well-directed, well-acted and hilarious romp then look no further. This is a movie I think all movie buffs should add to their collection and one that sadly went unnoticed in theaters.After you watch the movie, if you find the characters entertaining I highly suggest picking up the books. They are a light read, very entertaining and even more well-crafted than this short feature film. Two Thumbs Up!

One of the 5 funniest movies I have ever seen

This film was even smarter, wittier, and funnier than I was expecting,and I was expecting a lot. The one liners come at you faster than youcan even comprehend them, and I think a second watching is definitelywarranted because I'm sure I will pick up more witticisms by doing so.The entire film is very well paced, and Michael Cera and PortiaDoubleday give an incredible performance. What makes the film reallyspecial is that beneath all the gags is a touching (although twisted)love story. The movie touches on the usual pangs of teenage angst, butwith a fresh and modern perspective, kind of like Ferris Bueller meetsAmerican Pie. But the intelligence of the lyrics and timing of deliveryare superior to both of those movies. The result is a wonderfullyentertaining story that really keeps you on your brain engaged.Highly recommended.
