Judge Wilson cant do anything, since Sheriff Brady is one of Murphys men. But attorney Alex persuades him to constitute Tunstalls young friends to Deputies and give them warrants of arrest for the murderers. Instead of arresting them, William Bonney just shoots them down. Never intended to be a rival to Leone, Young Guns is a fun ride with likable performances.

Its easy to pass off Young Guns as an eager to please piece ofthrowaway rock video style entertainment aimed at the youngerdemographic but that would be unfair. The thing is,it knows what itwants to be and it does it very well. The young cast all perform withgreat fun and energy thus enriching the film immeasurably. They are wellsupported by Jack Palance and Terrence Stamp who bring weight toproceedings, particularly Palance who seems to revel in his hammyrole.Emilio Estevez's interpretation of Billy The Kid is a great watchtoo, his realisation of the character may be a million miles from thereality but when there's this much fun being had on screen, who cares!?The music in the film is a little jarring in places, electric guitarsscreaming Van Halen style over a western horse chase feel very much outof place but its never distracting enough to take you out of the fun.So in summary Young Guns is a western that wants to entertain you and Isay it succeeds well.It was never intended to be a Sergio Leone classicwestern, just a fun ride with characters you can root for.On thatlevel,it is a triumph.

The Forgotten One

Young Guns was a film that wasn't appreciated at its time. Sure it made 45 million dollars in 1988, but sometimes profit is overlooked by the quality of the film. Every time I watch Young Guns it makes me smile. The excellent cast (except Charlie Sheen) was outstanding. But the performance by Emilio Estevez was one step higher. His portrayal as "Billy the Kid" was phenomenal. The scene where Billy taunts the man in the bar, and then shoots him, was hilarious. Even though Young Guns was overlooked, in my eyes it will never be forgotten.

Well, I've had you pegged as the type that likes... educatin' young men.

This movie was recommended to me a long time ago, and I finally get achance to see it.Now, there are two things right off the bat that I like about the film. One, it's filmed in New Mexico, and that is a good setting for awestern. Secondly, it has a whole bunch of actors worth watching, evenif they don't do a great job of acting. After Murphey's (Jack Palance) gang guns down the boy's guardian(Terence Stamp), they set out to arrest the perps.Once Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) starts the killing, the rest of thegang have no choice but to go along. First, they get high, then theyget wild. With Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Charlie Sheen, it wasa rousing western adventure.

3.5 stars out of 5

Loved this movie as a kid; love it a little less as an adult, now that I can see its flaws, but still a worthy way to spend 2 hours of your life.

Keith as archetype, what Lincoln County really was

As an oldster who enjoys current films despite the "noise" oftenselected as soundtracks, it is also often sad to see what roles oldactors must take to keep food on the table. Thus the appearance ofOliver Hardy in "The Kentuckian" or Henry Fonda as a real bad guy in"Once Upon a Time in the West". The role I remember most is that ofBrian Keith, as the aging mountain man. As most know, he, like JohnWayne, died of cancer. I imagine that this role, like that of JW in"The Shootist", was an affirmation that the way to go out of a life isWith Sand. It is not only 19th century weapons that are or may beinaccurate; many a gun battle these days feature 1000 shots and onlyone hit--you'll remember one of those school shootings where thishappened at ten feet. As for Lincoln County, this was the westernmostpart of Texas stolen from us in 1853. Bo matter what you call thefight, it's Texans (and Confederate-philic) Regulators against thecarpetbaggers in power.

A fun and exciting movie to kill time over.

Young Guns is set in 1878 during the bloody Lincoln County War in New Mexico. After their boss is murdered, Billy the Kid becomes the leader of the Regulators and hunts down the people responsible for the murder of their friend. In a bloody climax, good triumps over the evil *****s.This movie is probably as good as Open Range which by the way beats out John Wayne's classics.Young Guns is an adventurous, violent, bloody movie with some fine humor added to it. This is one of the best westerns made.

"I Ain't Left Handed!"

Young Guns could be seen as the one that started it all. This great western adventure has inspired over a decade of imitators on the big and small screen, but none of them nearly as successful or as fun as this one. Young Guns, of course, tells the story of William H. Bonney, the young New Mexico outlaw better known to history as Billy the Kid. Billy is taken in by the kind-hearted English merchant John Tunstall, who is invloved in a trade dispute with local Irish mob boss John Murphey, a powerful member of a circle of corrupt New Mexico politicians known as the Santa Fe Ring. After Murphey's Boys assasinate Tunstall, The Kid and his Regulators are deputized to bring in the perpatrators. But instead of issuing the warrants as ordered, Billy goes on the war path, knocking off Tunstall's killers, becoming outlaws in the process, and escalating the war, intending to ultimately bring down Murphey and the Ring. What ensues is action adventure history as Billy and his Regulators ride across the New Mexico desert with guns blazing.Despite it's Hollywood overtones, this a great western adventure that unlike many earlier Billy the Kid films, shows time went into researching the actual history of the events that shaped Billy's short but famous life. Emilio Estevez, as Billy, plays a darkly likable outlaw leader alongside his brother Charlie Sheen as Dick Brewer, the foreman of the Regulators. A fantastic supporting cast including Keiffer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jack Palance, Terrence Stamp, and many others bring this classic 80s western to life . Young Guns inspired in me an intense interest in the history of the West as well as a love of great western movies like this one. Check it out.

Very Entertaining Film..

In reading the other reviews of this film, it certainly seems as if nobody is really luke warm about Young Guns. It's either loved because it's relatively accurate or disliked because it's so fictional.Or the viewer enjoys it because Estevez and the other cast members are solid or it's disliked because it's the "brat pack" set in 1880's New Mexico.Well, let me throw out my 2 cents.Firstly, I've read alot of books about Billy The Kid and while the movie is not 100% accuarate, it's relatively close. I'm going alittle bit my memory here, but I don't recall a singlen incident in the movie that was a complete piece of fiction.Billy was taken in by John Tunstall - an English gentleman, who along with John Chisum, was "butting heads" with the Murphy -Dolan faction of Lincoln, New Mexico. And this small group who worked for Tunstall did eventually become deputized regulators who, unfortunately, killed Sheriff Brady and after that, became wanted men themselves. Now I read one review that said the The Kid was essentially a "loner" and that his involvement with a "gang" of Regulators couldn't have been more wrong.Well, this reviewer clearly doesn't know very much about Billy The Kid. The kid may have had many bad qualities (personally I don't think he did), but disloyalty was not one of them. In fact, his loyalty to John Tunstall and his decision to avenge the murder of his boss - and the one man who really gave Bonney a home - eventually cost him his lfe. There would have been many opportunities very early on in the Lincoln County War for The Kid to get out of the area, but he chose not to.Estevez's depiction of The Kid wasn't far off the mark. It's said that he always had a smile on his face and didn't carry a gudge for too long. But make no mistake - he was as cold-blooded a killer as any who resided in the west of the late 1800's. The fact is that with the exception of Bell, a deputy who was guarding him and who chose to resist The Kid when he retrieved a gun that was left for him in the privy, I don't think the Kid killed a single person who didn't deserve it or wasn't trying to kill the Kid himself. The Regulators were an interesting assortment of characters and I think the actors who portrayed them pulled it off reasonably well. Today, I would have a problem seeing Charlie Sheen as Dick Brewer - the leader of the Regulators - but when this film was made, he was fine.Jack Palance was his usual great self in his portrayal of Murphy, the "bad" guy who was responsible for Tunstall's murder. Terrence Stamp was fine as Tunstall - in fact, he was very convincing as a man who commanded such loyalty that a few very young men died to avenge his death. Keifer Sutherland was a very entertaing Doc Scurlock. In fact, I can't think of anybody who really didn't stand out in their performance. This movie is not Red River or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - it's never going to be mentioned when the great westerns of all time are discussed. But like Silverado, for example, it's very, very entertaining and provides a reasonably realistic depiction of one of the west's most enduring characterts - Billy The Kid.

The actors help

There are plenty of other genres of film that I prefer over the "western"genre, but if I am to consider myself a true film buff, than I have to tryeverything, right?Maybe that's the reason why I watched "Young Guns", I don't know. I supposeit could have been for the actors, and "Young Guns" boasts a so-so cast ofthem: Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips, KieferSutherland, Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko. Obviously, as actors go,some are better than others(Siemaszko, Mulroney, and I suppose Sutherlandoutweigh the other three), and as far as the performances go, some are alsobetter than others, with Siemaszko as the most moving and Estevez as themost miscast.I don't know what it is about Emilio Estevez's performance that bothered meso much, because usually I don't mind him, but in this one he just didn't"click." For one thing, he doesn't look believable as a cowboy, he justlooked like he was playing dress-up, basically. For another, he spoke insome weird faux-Southern accent and I guess I don't really like those withmost actors. Either you are Southern or you aren't. He also made his voiceall deep and "cold", and I just don't even know how to explain it. I justdidn't like him. If it's any consolation, I didn't really care for LouDiamond Phillips either.I was somewhat more impressed with the work of Dermot Mulroney and CaseySiemaszko. I have seen "Young Guns" about three times now, and for somereason, I did not really register Mulroney's work until about the third, buthe has a great role! Very funny. Casey Siemaszko also gave a rather goodturn, which for some reason, also took me a couple of tries to reallynotice. While he probably plays the most ignorant of the Young Guns (andSiemaszko often gets stuck playing people who are not of high intelligence),his character has enough wit and depth to get past the "dumb guy" role. Healso gives it a nice "sensitive" touch, that suggests that maybe CharleyBowdre is smarter than anybody allows him to be.But sometimes good acting just isn't enough. Films need to have interestingwriting in order to hold my attention, and "Young Guns" didn't deliverenough of that to me. Nevertheless, I didn't HATE it, and I am sure that ifpeople like westerns, and are more used to the formula, or if they reallylike one or more of the actors, than they will get into this movie.

New Western that's entertaining...

Recently I viewed the DVD version of the 1988 western "Young Guns". I haveto admit, that 12 years since this film was released, I still enjoyedwatching it. This film does not appear dated, except for the realizationthat just about everyone in the film (with the exception of KeiferSutherland) has managed to pretty much "six gun" their acting careers intooblivion. The film, set in the late 19th century old west, depicts the storyof the Billy the Kidd and his loosely knitted gang of "Regulators"dispensing justice on those who killed their gallant British (and extremelyboring) leader played by Terrance Booth, who seemed to have a fancy to"young guns"...not too far from the real truth? I liked this film for thefact that it copied the the formula that made so many of the spaghetti andb-rated westerns a huge success. Guns, bad guys in black, more guns, Cowboysand Indians, old west...and guns.I had totally forgot the cameos of Jack Palance & Brian Keith (Uncle Billfrom Family Affair)who were in it. I guess Charlie Sheen's role was just alittle more than cameo, but close too it. This film is worth watching, especially if you've never seen it before or if its been a long time (likemy experience) since watching it. I assure that it won't be a waste of 90minutes.

Good Western

Jon Tunstall (Terence Stamp) is an English cattleman who takes inoutlaws to help him on his farm and help them prepare for a life in thenew world as well as putting a roof over their heads. In this group there is mild mannered Doc (Kiefer Sutherland in abrilliant performance) Chavez (Lou Diamond Phillips in his bestperformance to date) as well as Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney andCasey Siemasko they are band calling themselves the regulatorscompeting against rivalman L.G Murphy (Jack Palance in a terriblyunderrated performance) for land and power Into this war enters Billy(Emilio Estevez in an awesome performance) he fits in well with therest of the regulators and gets on with Tunstall.Tunstall is brutally murdered forcing the regulators from their homethey are deputized by Tunstall's lawyer Alex McSween (Terry O Quinn)hoping to bring justice to those who killed Tunstall and one daygetting to Murphy who ordered the killing. This is where Billy's wild side comes out and Estevex really has funplaying him he takes the regulators authority too far and they soonbecome the hunted. Its a bit of a slow start but after the death of Tunstall it reallypicks up speed its non stop action and thrills right to the end withgunslinging a plenty and lots of huge gunfights and deaths the settingis a brilliant typical wild west setting and is brillaintly detailedwith lots of cool starsApart from the action and carnage the other huge strength here is theacting Emilio Estevez is pretty much an evil good guy as really getsinto the character, Kiefer Sutherland is more subtle and polite and nota very violent person, Lou Diamond Phillips character is a typicalhardman he plays the role very well, Charlie Sheen's character Richard"Dick" Brewer is my favourite out of the lot even if he isn't in thefilm as much as the others (he dies quite early in) its still a goodperformance So overall i would hugley recommend this film to Westernfans, Action junkies (even a touch of romance) or just people who likea good film you will not be disappointed however it lacks a little asit is not very rewatchable but from time to time give it a try andcheer yourself up 8/10 8/10

Brat Pack Go West

Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Emilo Estevez and Lou DiamondPhillips star in this light weight western, re-telling of the Billy TheKid story. This movie plays fast and loose with history and is in notparticularly accurate about most details but as an enjoyable westernadventure it succeeds. The movies style harks back to the old days ofthe western adventure such as Rio Bravo etc and while nowhere near itin terms of class it is a worthwhile watch. Jack Palance makes afantastic bad guy and Terranc Stamp puts in a good performance as thegangs father figure. Performances of the brat pack are pretty good andI really enjoyed Estevez's portrayal of the kid. If you like westernsand enjoyed modern versions such as Tombstone you'll enjoy this movie.7/10 - Not exactly Unforgiven or Rio Bravo but still a worthwhile watchfor any western fan.

Something Different & Interesting

Missed this film and finally got to view this very unusual story aboutan Irishman who takes in men and young ones who have very SpecialTalents. There is bad blood between the Irishman and the localpolitician's in town and bad bad threats are made back and forth witheach other. Emilo Estevez,(William H. Bonney), "Another Stakeout",'93,gave an outstanding performance through out the entire film. KieferSutherland,(Doc), "Dead Heat",'02, showed his great acting abilitieswho had a great taste in women and chose a cute petite Asian gal; whowas really a slave gal owned by a wicked crook. Charlie Sheen,(RichardBrewer), "Rated X",'00, was fast with the guns and would kill a personat the blink of an eye lid ! Richard Brewer managed to get the nameBilly the Kid, which made for another film, "Young Guns II "

A Childhood Favourite that Still Entertains.

"Young Guns" has been dubbed by Many a Critic as the "Brat-Pack Western". Well... Yes, it does star a few of the so-called Brat Packers, does that make it any less of a Classic Western... I think Not. "Young Guns" has All the Requirements needed for Classic Western Status, and in My Books, it's Up there with the Best.Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips and Charlie Sheen lead the charge as "The Regulators", a Group of Young Cowboys out to Settle some Scores. Emilio plays Billy the Kid, the Self-Proclaimed Leader of the Regulator Posse, and he plays it Well. He is Tough, Likeable and a Natural Born Leader. If Billy the Kid Was really like this, I'd follow him to the Ends of the Earth. (remember, I said "If") Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips give the Best Supporting Performances, in this one and in the sequel. Charlie Sheen isn't given as much Screen time, but he uses the time he has Very Well. The Climactic Standoff is one worth Waiting for; it's Stylish, Original and Violent... It's a Classic Showdown. The film is Full of Tense Gunfights and Violent Shootouts, and as the Characters have been Well-Developed, the Audience is on the Edge of their Seats Throughout. "Young Guns" Will one day be rated up there with the Best Westerns, it is a Beloved film by many and it Will be Remembered by All who see it.

That Guys Killed More People Than Smallpox!

Yes, you can hear classic lines like the one of the guy who's killedmore than smallpox, and my favorite of the whole movie when Billy goes"Hey Colonel Sh**head, ...." that one still cracks me up to no end, ifyou watch Young Guns! I really dug this flick when it came out onvideo, and I need to plug it good here for two reasons. First, myparents claim I was playmates with the Sheen (Estevez) boys, because Igrew up in Greenwich Village and my parents were running around in thesame artsy crowd with Martin Sheen. So I always give those two probablymuch more credit then they deserve. Second, I made some serious jackplaying the end scene to middle aged guys with money to burn on a newthing called Dolby Surround THX in the late 80's to early 90's. Thesoundtrack if played on a home theater system was so highly exaggeratedthat you'd have to be deaf not to hear the ricochet's going from frontto back! The movie is very light on dead spots. It's made for the teensand attention span was a real factor in its making. There's action justto kill time in this flick and it works, Emilio's snappy dialog andcrazy antics make it really interesting, and I also thought Casey hadsome bits that almost stole the movie for him. Brian Keith, TerrenceStamp, and the great Jack Palance add some legitimacy to also bring itup a notch. I just watched this flick in full on cable at my currentjob (the "decent" surround systems don't cost $4,000+ anymore so nomore commission salesman job for guys like me, I've got a "real" jobnow, lol), and it brought a tingle up my spine to see that ending againas I remembered every line that was being said. Cool flick for YoungGuns like I used to be!
