X2 Does Fall A Bit Short, But It's Still Really Fun To Watch

Seems that X2 has been a movie that has gotten the love or hatetreatment, just not the the extreme with movies like Alien 3. To getone thing straight, X2 is not as good as the first X-Men, but it'sstill a fun and stylish watch that actually comes out better than whattypical movie sequels deliver.X2 starts out acting like the audience knows who everyone is, so if youhaven't watched the first X-Men then you'd better watch it before thisone, but why wouldn't you? Anyway, the character development isn't thatdeep since thanks to the first X-Men we all know who most of themutants in X2 are, with the exception of Jason, Deathstrike and theinfamous Nightcrawler, whom is awkwardly portrayed but still has a coolpart in the beginning. Some of the main characters from the first moviedon't have as big of a role in X2, instead, X2 allows the audience toget acquainted with some of the more or less underdeveloped mutantsfrom the first like Iceman and Pyro. The plot in X2 isn't anything special, but it's worthy to say theleast. All you really need to know is Logan finds out why he becameWolveriene, who gave him his powers and that the school gets overtaken.X2 does however set the stage for X3, so expect to see that coming atus soon. The special effects in X2 are certainly impressive, which help nicelyto compliment the stylish action sequences that made the action inX-Men so fun to watch. It's these action scenes that make X2 so fun towatch and worth viewing multiple times. That and some humorous dialoguein a few areas will give fans of the first X-Men plenty of reason tolike this movie.Does X2 prove to be as good as the first, no. Does it do anything tochange the way we look at movies, no. But X2 does give us plenty ofreason to have faith in X3 and proves to itself that stylish action isenough to make a movie watchable, but relying on it isn't good enough.

Excellent

I never had anything to do with X-Men comics or cartoons and I only liked the first one. But this one was INCREDIBLE and I am now a huge fan of both movies! Unlike the disappointing Hulk (bad movie) and even the fragile Spider-man story, X-Men brigs true human issues to the big screen and almost can be taken out of the comic book genre because it seems so much more than that. Don't waste your money on mindless ridiculous movies like Hulk, instead get a movie that you know you will enjoy. THe interaction between the characters is great. Each has something great to do. Women take a fornt seat as Storm, Jean Grey, and Mystique are the major stars of the movie. Wolverine and Magneto play awesome roles and although Professor X's role may be smaller than in the first, it is much more important to the story of the film. The new X-Men just get cooler and cooler, bringing Nightcrawler, Deathstrike, Iceman, and Pyro to the scene. Also, Rogue and Cyclops are back, although with smaller roles, they have their moments. The action in non-stop and fantastic from Wolverine's rage on the school invasion to Storm and Jean piloting the X jet away from incoming missles. THe opening scene with Nightcrawler is not easily forgotten and shows Bryan Singer's true talent. The nemesis is fantastic and seeing the X-Men together in a fragile relationship is a joy to watch. Get this movie! Get X-Men 1 too! Its a saga you won't want to miss!

Marvel Comics rule

I love all of the marvel made films, especially X-men and X-men 2. Iwould gladly give up a school day to watch both the films back-to-back.The creator of marvel comics is in my view a genius, and I cannot evencontemplate how he made the stories up. I just wish I could write likethat, especially in my English exams! One of my friends at school iscrazy, and it wasn't long before I too was obsessed as well. Wefrequently have discussions, mainly over Shawn Ashmore and hischaracter! It was the same friend who introduced me to this web-site,and it is addictive, looking up quotes and checking up on actors andactresses. During X2, I loved the humour Wolverine brings to the story, and his 'hate' relationship with Cyclops. I really felt for them bothwhen they are crying near the end, but I wont give away what happens. You will have to watch it and see, then get sucked into the marvelworld with me! I loved the symbolism at the beginning with Wolverineand the wolves at Alkaline Lake, also I really felt the chemistrybetween Iceman and Rogue. Thats it from me. ZM xx

Aside from the (perhaps) overly thrilling spectacle of Wolverine's "berzerker rage" the lion's share of excitement comes from the returning villians and the introduction of Nightcrawler.

Good incomprehensible nonsense

The plot is incomprehensible, the special effects superb and theimagination unbridled, (though some may say it could do with somebridling). Bryan Singer's follow-up to the first "X Men" movie has thecharacters already established, (though newcomers may find it hard tofigure out who's who), so he gets straight down to the plot.Thematically that could be written on the back of a postage stamp, soit's action all the way. The problem isn't so much that it doesn't makesense but rather that there is so little to make sense of. And we havethe right to feel cheated that potentially serious themes like racismand ethnic cleansing are given such short shift, (am I reading too muchinto this nonsense?).However, for most of it's length it's highly entertaining in a bafflingsort of way. It moves at a cracking pace which unfortunately means thatcharacters are never long enough on screen to develop. This isparticularly true of Wolverine who this time round is reduced to acypher. On the other hand, Alan Cumming's fallen angel is a blast andCumming is the best thing in the movie. The fact that Ian McKellen'sMagneto disappears before the end is an obvious indication that "X Men3" was already in the offing.

I enjoyed the first movie more, but can't see any flaw in this one

I watched the movie for the first time at theater in 2003 anddisappointed. It seemed me less entertaining and pretty slow paced. However, later, I took its DVD and watched it again, completely changedmy mind. X-2 is as entertaining as the first one and again with great, amazing action scenes. Plus, the movie is deeper, more powerful thanthe first one owing to the brilliant script. The opening sequence ofthe movie is one of the best opening sequences so far. However, one ofmy favorite parts, may be favorite part is the assault sequence. It isspectacular, not showy. Especially editing and sound editing are greatand to me it deserves to be included in cinema anthology, at leastaction cinema anthology. I like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but whateverhe does, he cannot be as tough as the original character, in otherwords, he does not look like a threat. Sorry, but Brian Cox's WilliamStryker is much more better than Danny Huston's William Stryker. Theman with the wheel chair must be one of the most important charactersof X-Men myth, but I did not know this character, still I don't know, Ihaven't searched, so I cold not understand that part exactly. The cellof Magneto recalls the cell of Hannibal Lecter obviously. The plan ofhim and Mystique was probably one of the most smart plans in cinema. Asfor the X-jet sequence, like the assault part, it deserves to beincluded in the bests. Except Behind Enemy Lines, the greatest 'jet'sequence is here. Spectacular and especially sound editing is great.Twister moments were unbelievable. Wolverine Deathstrike fight is veryharsh (as I know, because of the complaints of the fans, Singer madefights more tough) but a bit exaggerating and showy. However, there aremore amazing scenes, more action and stories in the movie.

Standard Comic Turned Movie Fare

I rented this from the library a couple of week ends ago,and after somedeliberation,I decided to share my thoughts.I am not an X man fan.Call me dry and boring, but I like my super heroesunconflicted because it's part what make them super. Also,I think thatHollywood, which is the most closed, superficial place on earth makingmovies that preach tolerance a bit nauseating. But overall, this was anOK movie,it was a classic story of revenge by a parent who thoughttheir child had been hurt, not helped.Someone said already that all theactors had been models who had made the cross over to acting andsullied the screen.I agree.I thought that Hugh Jackman,IanMcKellen,Patrick Stewart, and Brian Cox did good work, but other thanthat, the performances were less than memorable.BTW,if you really wantto see Brian demonstrate what a good actor he truly is,check outNuremberg next time it's on TNT.He does a brilliant job as HermannGoering. The actor who played Cyclops was really hammy and annoying.Theplot and the bit about Cerebro were a bit far out,but again,it wasstandard comic book fare on the big screen, and the special were rathergood. The only major problem I had was the fight between Deathstrike andWolverine because it was gratuitous, unnecessary, and dumb.Kelly Hu,whois very attractive but who has no acting talent looked rather sillyfighting the way she did, although I must admit I would not mind herclimbing me in that leather outfit.Anyway it was OK,but I think I willwait until X3 comes out on video too.

Loved IT

I saw this right after the MAtrix, and this is the much better of thetwo. The story was nice and to see Jean go into the whole Phoenix thing wasniceand interesting. There could have been more character development as farasCyclops and Storm (who should be recast, and didnt she have and accent inthe first?) But other than that this was an impressing sequel and I lookforward to the 3rd.

Brigid382 2012-04-23 08:37:04

Great!

This movie was sooo good! It was way better than the first one. I had beentotally looking forward to seeing this movie and i wasn't let down. It wasfull of action and suspense and it was funny too. i'll be honest...one ofthe main reasons i went to see this movie was because Shawn Ashmore was init. I mean that's not a bad reason to go see something is it? N E Ways Shawnand all the other actors did great! It was a fun movie that i would go seeagain.

A review of the DIGITAL projection

I was lucky enough to see this film digitally projected (I've read thatthere were only 35-45 theaters in the US that are doing this.) Living inLos Angeles, you have to deal with smog, freeways, and attitudes, but atleast you get digitally projected movies!Having watched the movie projected on film the week before, I already knewwhat to expect from the story, so I probably wasn't as blown away as Ishould have been by certain sequences, especially the opening withNightcrawler. But what I got was a perfectly crisp picture - no filmscratches, no annoying reel changes with "cigarette burns" followed by anaudio pop. If you don't know what a "cigarette burn" is, see "Fight Club,"but I warn you - you'll always be conscious of it every you see a movie inthe theater. There were however at times, when the picture was a little too perfect. Some shots looked blurry, like they had blown up the film a little to get acloser shot. I don't know if they actually did this, but that's what itlooked like. A few times when there was A LOT of action and cameramovement, there was some SLIGHT blur and picture jumping. And by this I domean SLIGHT. Unless you were looking for it, you probably wouldn't havenoticed it. Also, some of the edges on objects on the screen seemed alittle jagged at times, but then again, this wasn't thatnoticable.Don't get me wrong, these are only minor criticisms. Do I prefer thedigital projection? Definitely. This is the third digitally projectionfilm I've seen, the other two being Episode II and Toy Story 2. The biggestdifferences here is that these two movies were created digitally while X2was shot on film and transferred. The picture was still superior, but notmind-blowing (and it made Mystique and Nightcrawler's make-up jobs look alot more like make-up)While I preferred the digital projection, I wouldn't tell you to plan a roadtrip to seek out a theater that has it like I would have for Episode II andToy Story 2. If you're going to see it, and there is a theater around thatdoes have it, then go for it!

panzerphil 2012-04-19 18:28:42

MUCH better than the first...

It is pleasing to see that X2: Xmen united is doing so well intheaters...this means there may be a X3. Director Bryan Singer did a fabulous job of bringing all of the characterstogether and likewise developing some new. But left my movie critic badge athome for this one...I just wanted some action and was amazed. Just when wethought we have seen it all with movies like Crouching Tiger and theMatrix...X2 comes up with some original sequences that had many in theaudience cheering. A few other notes...POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!- Comic Book Purists will probably not be satisfied...but if you are apurist and you saw X1 you have no reason to be surprised. And if you happento be a purist (like the guy sitting next to me in the theatre) give therest of us a break and quit saying, "That's not the way it is in thebook."- You need to however know a little of the comic books to understand theending. - I wouldnt take a kid to the movie. Pretty graphic stuff (particularlyWolverine vs. Deathstrike). In all highly recommended...I cant wait for 3.

Michael Szymanski 2012-04-18 20:58:23

"X2" has two times the heroes, two times the action, and two times the fun of the first...

mr_whud 2012-04-16 20:57:41

My favorite superhero film of all time

Although I think love the original Superman, I think it pales in comparisonto this movie. I've been a die-hard Marvel fan all my life, and although Idon't know much about X-Men or own many of their comics, I like the film alot. The characters are colorful, the action is extremely cool, the actingis above average, the special effects are jaw-dropping, and the ending issheer genius. If you like anything affiliated with Marvel, stop reading thisstupid review and go see this movie.

Iron Talon 2012-04-16 05:58:33

X2 is a stronger movie than the first.

They say this is the summer of sequels. The more cynical feel this isgoingto be the summer of recycled ideas. Some say Hollywood producers arechanting, "If it isn't broken, why fix it." Whatever your viewpoint is,itis possible for sequels to be entertaining and well written. Such is thecase for X-men 2: X-men United. We are able to see our favorite characters from the last film. We haveStorm (Halley Barre), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Professor X/Xavier(PatrickStewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and so on. There are a couple of newones, Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) and Yuriko Oyama (Kelly Hu).There arealsosome cameo's of other favorite mutants from the comics series, includingCollosus and Shadow Cat and Henry McCoy (Beast). The returning castseemedreally comfortable in their roles. There was a chemistry between them, youfelt they had a history together, they knew each other for years. Thesecharacters are mutants, the next step in human evolution. They have aspecial power, i.e. telekenisis, teleportation, telepathy, acceleratedhealing, shape-shifting; I'm sure you get the idea. The cynics might be disappointed to know there is an actual plot. Thisis astory that continues to deal with a struggle between mutant and human, mostly with one man's hatred for them and his unquenchable desire todestroyany and all mutants. His name is Stryker, played by Brian Cox, who is amilitary scientist, apparently brilliant enough to develop a plasticprisonthat can hold the mutant Magneto, who is able to control magnetic fields(Iknow I would've never thought of that). The movie also reveals part ofWolverine's forgotten past. We see unlikely allies, old enemies, newalliances - all of which are neatly tied together throughout the movie.Thestory keeps moving. There are a number of subtle references to thingsthatmight happen if there is a next movie. I will admit - I was a littlesurprised by the ending. The special effects are well done. They were pretty flawless. Forexample, the effects for Nightcrawler, a mutant who can teleport -without the helpofPatrick Stewart's Enterprise- were stunning and, for lack of a betterdescription, believable. In line with the effects, the fights were wellchoreographed. The big fight for this movie is between Wolverine andYuriko- both are mutants who have some how had their skeletons infused with arare, indestructible metal, adamantium. And if you ever wanted a reasonwhyyou shouldn't get in a fight with a woman with nails, this is the bestreason yet.Again, to the disappointment of the skeptics, there is characterdevelopment. We particularly see this in three young mutant, Bobby"Iceman"Drake (Shawn Ashmore), Rogue (Anna Paquin), and John "Pyro" Allerdyce(AaronStanford). These are three teen-aged mutants attending Professor X'sschoolfor the gifted, a school dedicated to educating mutants in not just theirabilities, but in the three R's as well. We see them each dealing withtheir mutant "condition," and how it affects them personally. Thisbringssubstance to the film, bringing a more day-to-day dealing with theirmutantpowers and how it affects them and the ones they love, and to whom theyallythemselves. This movie does not religiously follow the comics books. Some libertieshave been taken. Obviously the costumes aren't like the ones we see inthecomic books. No problem with that; Spandex is so 80's anyway. Some ofthehistory and origin of various mutants and non-mutants have been modified(i.g. Yuriko was not a mutant, but a cyborg, and she was known as LadyDeathsrike). However, the overall concept of the story stays true enoughtothe comic book. My only beef is Mystique's lack of clothing. Granted, whenshe fights, the style is very serpentine, and she is seductive by nature. However, put some clothes on her! She was able to morph into some sortofdress in the comic book, they could at least do that. No, she's notreallynaked in the film, but the white dress with the skull belt in the comicsadded a certain flair to the character and some modesty. It is hard for a sequel to top it's predecessor. It's even harder for afilm based on a popular character(s)/story to meet the expectations ofit'soriginal fan base. This movie succeeds at both. The story has moremeat. The characters have more flesh to them. The writing was well done (I'mstill scarred by Storm's last words to Toad in the first movie); goodwhit, timely humor. This movie is able to stand alone, though there is more toappreciate if you've seen the first movie. Brian Singer did a good jobdirecting. The story flowed. I didn't find myself squirming in my seat, looking at the time. This is not Oscar material, but it is entertaining. The movie came to a conclusion but still left room for a third (now the"true" film critics are about to throw up). Over all, it's worth seeingonthe big screen and worthy to open the summer movie season.

xindi005 2012-04-07 07:40:17

Definitely the best of the two

I was there when the first X-men movie came out and was very pleasedwith most of the film. Having Patrick Stewart as Professor X was astroke of genius(though I wouldn't think that anyone else could playthe part better). However, I thought that Wolverine was a bit on themellow side, especially after reading the comic and even the cartoon onFox. Thankfully, Bryan Singer gave him his sack back and he is thewolvie we all came to love. The characters had more of a part in thestory and Storm had a normal accent( no fake stuff). If you haven'tseem X2, then you are definitely missing a cool movie. This is a moviethat comic, scifi, and action film fans will come to love....very cool.P.S....There is a hint to the next film here...can't tell you thatthough, you gotta see it.

X2

X2 - I went into this movie having expectations of a 2/4 movie. I think Iwould go so far as to say this is the most perfect comic book movie of alltime. 4/4 stars. There are no weaknesses here; it has a great and balancedstory, amazing effects, two of the best scenes I've seen in recent actionmovie history (1. The army raids the school and 2. Pyro goes off on thepolice), great actors and characters, and an irritating but greatcliffhanger ending. There isn't enough I can say that is good about thismovie. I liked the Hulk very much (and was one of very few) , but sorryMr.Lee, Singer's got it all over you.

Puke Bag 2012-03-29 18:18:20

Very strong sequel, much better than the first!

With so much kick-ass action and visuals, and even a plot to boot, this isdefinitely the highlight of the summer of 2003. Standout moments are theraid on the X-Mansion and the attack on the White House.I can't think of a weak moment in the film, as it is strong from start tofinish. The tongue in cheek humour is great (Iceman cooling off Wolverine'sbeverage, some great dialogue moments, the like), while the visual effectsare incredible.Easily fulfills all expectations. Can't wait for the DVD. Bring onX3!

Brian Orndorf 2012-03-29 10:29:06

For this brief shining moment, the "X-Men" universe held perfect pitch, and funny book movies had a new standard of execution to live up to.
