This review is from: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) If you like superhero movies then you'll enjoy this one. If they're not really your thing, then you may not enjoy this one all that much. The special effects are pretty bad, especially for a big budget movie like this one, but it's always fun to see Wolverine in action.

Some origins are best left untold...

I saw this a while ago, despite my better judgment. I had alreadyfigured I wouldn't like it based on reviews and comments from friends.Well, it was much worse than even I anticipated. If you thought theycouldn't screw up the X-Men universe any worse after X-Men 3, you werewrong. As disappointing as X3 was, Wolverine will leave you yearningfor Brett Ratner. X3 killed the current X-Men film franchise; Wolverineburied it.To his credit, Hugh Jackman gives it his all and does a pretty goodjob, as do Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth and Danny Huston as Stryker.Beyond that, there is nothing to recommend this movie. Absolutelynothing happens, the script is terrible (and often just plain stupid),the "action" and stunts are nothing we haven't seen before, a lot ofthe effects are extremely crappy, and the characters are sorelymistreated. Seriously, now that we know Wolverine's origin, I couldn'tgive two sh**s about him. There is almost nothing about this movie thatworked. It's generic, it's lame, it's complete and utter crap. After this and X-Men 3, I am really hoping Marvel Studios fights toclaim X-Men movie production rights from Fox. Then maybe they canreboot the X-franchise and start making good X-movies again. Takinggreat comic book characters and throwing them into a s**t storm likethis has got to stop. Seriously.

Awesome movie!!!

Non of the X-men movies should be taking too seriously that said.... this is an awesome movie lots of action and by far the most interesting story of any of the X-men. Sure this is not King Lear but is not suppose to be either. I don't get other reviewers when they talk about the story being too thin. I say to those people come on!!! as long as they jam pack the movie with action scenes epic battles and portrait the characters accurately who cares if the story is not as complex as you would like it to be. They did make a great action movie... you just need to watch it as if you were a kid and enjoy a good old action flick.I like this movie so much that after watching it I went online and purchase the video game for Xbox360 and it was just as awesome XDPD: I hate Will.i.am acting in this movie (I like his music though)

Great film, with great action sequences but lacks some character development

I saw this movie midnight opening and don't regret it at all. I can seewhy some people do not like this movie but from my perspective, ienjoyed it very much. Let me give my explanation without giving anyspoilers....The people who didn't like this movie were probably die hard fans ofthe old comics with Deadpool, Agent Zero, and many of the other "sub"characters. I am a big fan of X-Men and the franchise but not a diehard comic-con type fan, nor have i read the comics so i enjoyed thismovie based on the action sequences and explanation of Wolverine's pastwhich leads up to the X-Men series. Hugh Jackman was great as usual, and the explanation about his Weapon X transformation and relationshipwith all the other characters is very clear. Only problem i had withthis movie was that it was about 50% Wolverine(obviously hence thetitle which is stupid for people to complain about that) 20%Sabertooth, 20% William Stryker and 10% every other character combined. I think the trailer gave snippets of every character, leaving theaudience to believe OMG Gambit, The Blob, even Cyclops are in themovie!!! and they are in it for about 5-10 minutes and left some peopledisappointed. I was very hyped to see Gambit and Deadpool in the moviebut their screen time was extremely limited. All in all, i thought itwas a good movie, mostly because Hugh Jackman pulls off Wolverineflawlessly and the action sequences were better than any other movie ihave seen in a while. So i recommend this to anyone who isn't lookingfor The Dark Knight type movie but more of a wildly action epic with agreat explanation of Wolverines characters past

Loved it!!

My hubby and I saw this on the same day that we saw "Star Trek" in the theater - we watched "Wolverine" first, and then we saw "Star Trek" - and I was MUCH more impressed by this film! (NOT that I'm comparing "Origins" with "Star Trek" - they're obviously 2 totally different films - but I was completely pumped up after leaving the "X-Men" theater, and then was fairly quickly deflated once I settled into "Star Trek.") Anyway, if you want a major adrenaline rush; if you want really awesome special effects and stunts; and most importantly, if you want some honest and fantastic acting, then "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is the flick for you.Returning as the title character, Hugh Jackman is amazing (no surprise there!), and I love how the story really does focus on his beginnings and what made him who he is. (I read at least one other review on here that said the story didn't deal too much with his origins; don't know where that reviewer got that idea?!? Were we watching the same movie??) I was also blown away by Liev Schreiber's performance as Victor Creed, Logan's brother, because he brought a scary sense of reality to his character's ever-increasing rage and ferocity. The rest of the supporting cast was great, as well, especially Taylor Kitsch (of "Friday Nights" fame) as Gambit. I certainly hope to see him in more big feature films. At any rate, go buy (or, at least, rent) this film!! You won't be disappointed!......I can't wait to get my copy in the mail any day now. :)

jollyafromen 2012-05-14 00:55:06

who gives a crap if its not the same as the original. I was awesome!

I think everyone needs to stop rating the movie based on the originalcomic and story. Obviously some things are extremely different from the original. The movie was excellent, and the only reason why i noticed the flaws inthe CG was because I went on here and read the comments from others.I don't know why this movie is getting a -5 rating from anyone. The movie is not rushed, it is an hour and 45 minutes long, and givesyou a clear understanding. You must see this movie. Take it from a regular movie-goer, who justlikes good movies.

THE best prequel movie of all-time. A+

It has a very good storyline, the non-stop forward-moving pace workswell and gives it a tone that works better then other, longer movies. It's very well directed and the acting (small, medium, and large roles)is PERFECT. I would have loved to have seen more of Gambit and Wilsoneven though that might have screwed with the pace that I justmentioned. The very best movie of 2009 regardless of genera. This is sogritty, real, and heartfelt that it even craps on the last film (LastStand) and I actually enjoyed that film. Overall this movie was thebest that I've seen this year. There is not one wasted line, visual, camera angle or development inthis entire movie. Everything serves to advance the plot. It was tightand lean and superbly done. I truly think that this is the best prequelmovie of all-time. How could you not like it? From the new mutants toall of the special effects to the crisp pace… I loved it. I loved theending. You can obviously see the attempt to tie this film to eventsfrom the trilogy but it all works neatly and tightly. Wolverine is thefirst movie this year that I want to see again. It's one heck of anentertaining movie.10/10 superb!!! I can't wait for the DVD... I hope there's also adirector's cut but I can't imagine what they could've possibly left outof this fabulous film.

Great movie hope for more Wolverine

Hope they make more before HJ gets to old to play Wolverine always my favorite character in the x-men growing up. Entire comic book series on just him. Great movie, looking forward to more.

Good craftsmanship, but...

When I went to see this movie I expected some action-flick, fast, fun, good old entertainment. And that is what I got. Plus, the whole thingwas focused on Wolverine's character-development - in a fast way. Veryfast, that is, jumping through important stages and relationships onlyto slow down just before the beginning of the story of the first X-Men-Movie, where the good old revenge-theme is played upon, sidelined bythe rare moral-moment when the main antagonist and his primary tool arepardoned, because it would have made the good ones bad to kill them.Killing dozens of bystanders: hey, no problem there. So here we are inthe middle of the mess. There was all the fun, the action, good actors(especially Liev Schreiber, whose part in 'Wolverine' was a little bitsimilar to the role he played very well in Defiance), amazing pictures, stunts, S/E, soundtrack... but the story, well, seems to have been leftbehind a bit. Especially when it came to the baddies' deeds. Build someindestructible guy to destroy him afterward? Look into the magic boxand pull out a good old gun with bullets (six) that alone can destroythe indestructible soldier - and keep them away from the hunters? Inthe end they do not kill him but erase his memories? And the bad guysanswer to the announcement that the big 'we' financing his little showknows about his deeds and will shut him down? He kills the messenger. Icould go on for a little while, but why should I bother with thedetails, when the movie didn't, which is exactly why it is just anaverage action- flick and nothing more.

Lawrence DeVore Jr 2012-05-07 03:25:40

Extremely disappointing

There is absolutely no excuse for not using the rich history ofWolverine from the Marvel Comics archives. If Marvel Entertainment (AviArad / Stan Lee) is going to be involved in the production of theirtitles, they should insist on using the story lines from their comicswith as little modification as possible. All of the actors brought lifeto their characters. But, the story just disappointed. I was especiallysurprised by Gambit. I like the actor who played him. He's from the TVshow on NBC, "Friday Night Lights". Hugh Jackman brought Wolverine tolife as he's done in the previous X-men movies. Liev Schreiber did anexcellent job as Sabretooth.

griffolyon12 2012-05-06 12:48:14

Slightly Better Than I Thought

Why this movie was made as opposed to another film which brought theX-Men team back together again, I don't know. What I do know is thatwhile I had my reservations about X-Men Origins: Wolverine, overall itturned out to be an O.K. movie. I'm not saying that this film is asimpressive as Iron Man or the previous three X-Men films, but it stillgets the summer movie season kicked off on a fairly decent note. While I was entertained, the movie was not without its problems.Firstly the special effects were really bad by today's standards, aswell the story never seemed to build up to anything; it's comparable toan orchestra playing a symphonic piece and playing it as loud aspossible for the entire time. Still, with these few minor gripes asidethe film still managed to satisfy the audience. The action was entertaining to watch unfold and also the dialogue inmany spots was quite clever. Overall I'd recommend seeing this film. While it is a far cry from any of its predecessors, it still packsenough punch to let the audiences know that summer is finally here.I give X-Men Origins: Wolverine a 6 out of 10!

mombot 2012-05-04 17:10:13

I actually liked this, and I'm not an X-men Fan

For a movie based upon a comic book, it's good fun. I wasn't expectingmuch, since most critics panned the story (what there was) but gaveJackman and Schreiber high marks for their respective acting skills, asdo I. The big surprise was that this was actually good. My kids had agood time and enjoyed the action sequences and could follow the movie'splot easily. Their ages ranged from 6 to 11. Not that it was thatsimple, but there weren't a lot of silly complicated story sub plots tofollow. Some films suffer from too many details. We learned whyWolverine is the way he is in the previous X-Men films (which takeplace later in the time-line of events). Fight sequences are well done, the cast does a great job with their parts, and the one-liners arefunny. It's a good example of why it past the time to use mediocreactors and instead use good and capable actors in an action film. Theseactors, from Jackman and Schreiber to the others, brought this film upa few levels so I gave it an 7/10.

Better than X-Men 3.... Just!

Phil's Quick capsule Review: Not as bad as you have heard but not thatgreat either, Wolverine is an average film with a few greatperformances. The Hollywood Exec Pitch: It's another comic book movie. What's that Ihear… money! The Review So after a leaked work print, a rather naff looking coupleor trailers and enough Jackman press junkets to fill a book (bless hehas been busy) the first real big film of the year is here (no Fast &Furious didn't count). But is it more X 2 than X-men: The Last Stand? Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (whowill later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, andultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program to becomethe metal framed monster of the comic books. After dominating the first three X-Men movies Wolverine, the guy withthe big side burns, bad temper and the rather scary claws gets his ownmovie with X-Men Origins: Wolverine as we find out what made Logan intothe berserker we all know and love. Well that was the idea. Disappointingly in reality we mostly just get the last few years beforethe first X-Men movie, save for a very well laid out title sequencewhere we see a brief history of Logan and his brother Victor Creed(future Sabretooth) fight their way through a host of wars. This by farwould have been a more interesting story than the one we got, which hasto jump through hoops to ensure continuity with the later X-Men movies.Worse still most of the story you already know, especially if you're afan of either the films or comics. We know that Sabretooth doesn't die because he fights him the firstX-men movie. Same for William Stryker who appears in X-Men 2. Cyclopscan't see Wolverine because when they meet in the first film they havenever met before. So for the most part of the film you pretty much wholives and who dies, which makes for a hollow experience overall. Other franchise pleasing cameos such as a CGI'd younger PatrickStewart, Gambit & The Blob also get short changed. Even the WeaponEleven (Played by Brit Scott Adkins) doesn't work either. What is coolon paper – a hybrid mix of mutant powers and skills - is introduced solate in the game that he serves little point than to (quickly) die. Asfor the constant Sabretooth v Wolverine fights that drive the story…when they meet again in the finale what should be the epic smackdownbetween the two brothers is just a damp squid due to the fact that thewe know that Sabretooth can't die. No tension. No emotional connection. That said it's not all bad. It's well made and is well paced. LievSchreiber, who at first seemed a rather baffling choice for Sabretoothbeing that he isn't exactly a big bloke, is very good as is Jackman(but not quite enjoying it as much as he used to). The effects aren'tbad and the story (whist often a bit silly) drives the film nicely andat least gives proper motivation for the characters and the few properaction scenes there are aren't bad. Although, frustratingly, most ofthe action (save for the short Weapon Eleven fight) and explosions arein the trailer AGAIN. The short of it is this isn't a bad film. It justisn't great either. Director Gavin Hood has done his best to injectsome pace and invention into the film but in terms of story it's a reallet down as we either know what's coming or don't really care. Let's hope any future Origin movies correct this and go back to the oldfashioned way of film-making… writing a story rather than a releasedate. In short: For fans only. The Good: Jackman once againThe Bad: Weapon XI/Deadpool. The Ugly: The ending. Ugh!Best Bit : Wolverine Vs helicopter IMDb Rating: 5/10If you liked this watch: X-Men (8/10); X 2 (8/10); X-Men Last Stand(4/10)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine...or is that Wolverine the Origin that isn't really the original origin, but the new origin that wasn't that great.

OK, so I'll start by saying that I am not by any means allknowledgeable about everything to do with X-Men and the many variousbranching story lines that have been done over the years.(SPOILER ALERT) However, I did grow up with the cartoon and learned afew things about the Wolverine character from various places. (theoriginal idea of what the character was anyway) having said that, I canwholeheartedly state that I hate the bone Bone Claws idea, from what Irecall, Wolverine's only mutant power was regeneration, the adamantiumclaws being implanted as part of the weapon x program, along with thefull skeletal admanatium implant. From what I've learned after seeingthe movie is that the story of Wolverine was changed a few years ago,to give him claws as part of his original mutant powers...and I reallydisagree with that storyline...however...I was willing to let thatslide...as it is a comic book movie, and directors and writers have thereally hard job of deciding what elements from the multiple story linesto use and to disregard...having said that...I would have been fine with Bone Claws...had therest of the film been worthwhile, but all we seem to get is, wolverinelooking angry...someone dying...wolverine looking angry someone dyingand so on...then comes Stryker...probably one of the worst castingmistakes ever, why was Brian Cox not in this? plus the laughable line"I'll make you indestructible" then after doing so, and Wolverineescaping "hunt him down...and take off his head" WTF? you just made himindestructible...how in the hell is anyone going to take his head off?it's not like anyone made an admanatium samurai sword...oh wait...youdid make an adamantium amnesia bullet...then there is Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds is a breath of fresh air for thetiny amount time that he's on screen, even when his mouth is meldedshut...and as many people before me have said...he ends up looking likeBaraka from Mortal Kombat towards the end...and I don't even think I can say anything about Gambit withoutcompletely going off subject...just what in the hell is going on inthis film? I know it it's meant to be a Wolverine origin...but it seemsto be more about Sabretooth than anything else, and he hasn't beenhandled that greatly either...I'm not even sure if this can be called areview...as I'm not even sure if it makes any sense...I'm just typingaway here letting my thoughts spill out on to the screen...sorry ifI've wasted your time...but I just had to post my thoughts here.

wolverine is no dark knight

Wolverine i thought was one of the few characters of the xmen seriesthat can have his own movie. I like the first lets say 20 mins in thisfilm but hated the rest because this movie was plain and very clichémovie moving from wolverine origins to a typical revenge movie andoverall I was disappointed, even the mutant myth and complexity is gonewhich the first xmen movie which in my opinion is the best showed. There is no intensity or any feel of danger in this film with nosurprises. The movie should of just have wolverine and enemy sabertoothbecause crunching other comic characters was such a waste, In the moviewolverine gets information from every a comic character, then they havea useless fight between for no reason, the built up of the fight scenehow it begins is boring especially Gambit. When I left the cinema therewas really nothing to talk about with this movie, it just feels like acheap spin off. However I understand being this is wolverine's movie that some of thecharacters you have to buy the fact that they appear in the moviewithout being too much develop. But I thought they should of have RyanRenolds as an asset to this but was wasted in this movie. Ryan wasgolden and perfect match playing Wade Wilson for the small screen timehe had and his action scene was the best of the film, thats why i likethe first 20 minutes or so, but like I say his character was wasted inthis movie and wade Wilson would of been a memorable character but wasquickly forgotten because he was hardly in it.Wolverine is not as dark, compelling or animalistic as I thought itwould of been. Oh and one more thing sometimes a movie just gotta berated R I mean come on wolverine has these blades and he's fightingpeople slicing and dicing them both no blood. Uninspired action flick rent it

2012-04-28 01:34:04

Good Start, Rough Ending.

You know, Wolverine really impressed me within the first hour of the film. They didn't try to cram too much in and overaction the film. The weren't making the same mistake they did X3. We got to see a lot of characterization, which is my favorite quality of superhero films. I want to see the story and the journey, don't just blow up stuff and throw in riduculous fight scenes to sell movie tickets. I want reality within the surreal. The first half of the film really did justice to some of my favorite comic characters. And the new non-comic book characters (John Wraith and the electric mutant) complimented the film just fine. Everyones performance in the beginning of the film was fine by my standards. Then something went wrong in the second half. They tried to put in a bike chase scene, but it ended up being way over the top. I think everyones a little tired of seeing action heroes walk out of a flaming ball of fire. The action in general isn't smooth and they didn't pay enough for better CG. If you rewind before the chase scene we see a bathroom scene where Logan comes to terms with his blades. This scene takes the cake as the most useless scene in the movie, because the whole time the audience is distracted by just how badly they animated his blades. They look opaque for christ's sake.So going on we finally end up at Strker's island. This whole last part of the movie does not sit well with me. Wolverine learns the truth and then wants to cry and walk away instead of killing stryker. I'm not saying he should kill stryker, but WHAT WOULD WOLVERINE REALLY DO? So he walks off and cries and then hears a scream and comes back. How many times have I seen someone get upset and run away and then come back right before someone dies to save the day? Anyway, by the end we've totally ruined deadpool, and yes I know I can't beg Fox to keep everything the way it is in the comics, but guess what? Even the producer of this film and all the X-men films says I regret what happened to Deadpool, I want an entire reboot, I hope we can do that. You made a beloved killer an indestructable villain, who definately can't make another appearance the way he is right now. They would have to erase everything they've done to make a Deadpool movie now. Ok, enough about the film.SPECIAL FEATURES: I think we were sold a little short. We get a few short clips and about 6 commentaries/picture in picture tracks that play throughout the whole feature film. Please, I think everyone would rather have more behind-the-scenes segments and less commentaries. I like both but I don't want to watch the film 6 times to get my moneys worth. More lengthy behind the scenes, and less "Fun Facts while your movie plays". Trust me close to no one watched the X-facts or the Previsualizing tracks that play througout the movie. It's just cheap special features. The first three films have great special features on their blu-rays. I don't see how this can be so difficult. So all in all, Wolverine isn't bad, but it definately has it's flaws. It was more of a dissapointment, but it was definately better than X3. Hopefully, since one of Brian Singers friends is writing the Wolverine sequel, Singer might return to do justice to the franchise. But this for now is a rent-before-buy as opposed to a must-buy.

pretty bad for big screen!

The play was not great at all, the actors were all pretty bad which wasreally weird, the filming and camera angles were average (I rememberseeing a lot of nostrils in this movie). The film was completelydisjointed (they try maybe to give a comic book effect ....well did notwork!) I did not feel any flowing at all which made me reallyuncomfortable...some scene was almost lame. I laughed when baby boyLogan killed the nasty drunk man who said he was is dad!!!!The scriptis so badly written that I knew script before they started to sayanything !! the movie was really predictable (Silverfox first death waspretty funny too her lovely boyfriend left her rot in the forest andrun after his grumpy brother then I knew she was not dead of course soI was not surprise when I saw her again later in the movie...otherstuff was not really professional like the mouth of Silverfox whendying (the second time) is opened in one frame and then closed inanother frame (things you would expect to see in forgivable low budgetcheesy TV series). I know how much work it is to make a movie alltogether but I was not expecting some errors like that at this level! Iwas Really disappointed !

Wolfman Jackman is back and bad-ass as ever!

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE (2009) *** Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, DannyHuston, Will.i.Am, Lynn Collins, Kevin Durand, Dominic Monaghan, TaylorKitsch, Daniel Henney, Ryan Reynolds. Jackman's charismatic turn as thelupine mutant coasts through this rather predictable yet entertainingaction prequel to the Marvel Comics' iconic character, showing howLogan became Wolverine, including his ongoing sibling rivalry withhalf-bro Victor AKA Sabretooth (Schreiber having a blast as the baddie)and the nefarious military ops mechanist Stryker (Huston gleefullychomping at the bit as the villain) attempting to harness their powersfor his own use. Decent enough screenplay by David Benioff and SkipWoods and some tightly sequenced set pieces by director Gavin Hood(case in point: Wolfie's attack on a chopper is a dilly) keep theadrenaline pumping despite the histrionic plottings.

2012-04-26 11:11:03

hot Hugh Jackman and decent effects, but not much else

Wolverine is one of the more enduring characters from Marvel Comics, and it's not really that hard to see why. He's charismatic, intelligent and something of a major bad-ass. He's also now, after three appearances in the X-Men films, showing his claws in his own movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.Hugh Jackman tears up the screen as the title character, proving that he's more than capable of driving the movie by himself. He brings some real screen presence to the film, and that's good, cause if he didn't it would likely have sunk under its own weight and not been even watchable. As it is, the film is actually pretty good, though not great. The movie starts with young Logan in 1840's as he comes of age in the Northern Territories of Canada (though as Roger Ebert pointed out, neither such entity existed in the 1840's). He's a sickly lad made somewhat better by killing his father. He then embarks on a dramatic opening credits sequence showing him and his brother, Victor, as they fight their way through virtually every major war (on the American side, oddly. I guess Canada doesn't have enough wars for them to be interested. Also, this may be the only movie I've ever seen where large parts took place in Canada but were filmed elsewhere). After the credits we see Logan and his brother (now played by Liev Schreiber, who is almost as compelling a presence as Hugh Jackman), teaming up with a bunch of other mutants to... I'm not entirely clear what they were supposed to be doing, actually. They seem to end up being a private army for one Major Stryker (played by Danny Houston, who isn't nearly as interesting as Brian Cox). After some nastiness in Nigeria, Logan decides to part company with his team and goes back to Canada. He settles down there until the movie decides it's time for him to get back into action and then, as they say, hilarity ensues. Or something. We do get appearances by various characters from the Marvel universe, including Wolverine and Sabertooth, but also Deadpool, Silverfox, the Blob and Gambit, as well as a young Cyclops and a young... well, that would spoil a surprise. The plot isn't really much of much here, though it does do a good job of establishing where Wolverine came from. The action scenes are serviceable (although I have to say two immortals trying to fight each other to the death seems really, really pointless), and get the job done, though the SFX is mediocre at times (and Wolverine's metal claws look really fake compared to what he had in the X-Men films). The acting is decent by pretty much everyone (though the guy who plays Gambit has a very unconvincing accent. Really hot, though). The setting of the film is also somewhat confusing, since most of the movie takes place in the late 1970's, but you wouldn't know that unless the movie told you. Several of the shots, especially with crowds, look like they take place now rather than then. This isn't a great movie, but it is a decent one and a good enough way to pass the time. If you go in with fairly low expectations, you'll likely have a good time. At the very least, it's much, much better than X-Men 3.Now next let's have an Alpha Flight movie!
