Is it possible to climb out of the "Friend Zone" and become a love interest?

Pete (the perpetually nice Topher Grace) is Mr. Average Joe. He's not ugly, morbidly obese, or socially awkward, and he doesn't have any hideously disfiguring scars or conditions. The problem is, he's the nice guy. He doesn't dare risk a friendship with the perfect woman over possible rejection. So, naturally, in the ten-plus years he's known his crush Rosalee (Kate Bosworth), he hasn't made a move. Some say it's unrealistic that he hasn't hit on her, but it's quite normal. Simply put, he's grounded in the reality that the nice guy doesn't get the girl. Meanwhile, Rosalee is the typical "most beautiful girl in school and/or small town." She's the innocent type whose wholesome beauty simply takes over a room and enthralls every man with whom she comes into contact. There is no doubt that she's garnered this attention since she was probably a pre-teen. Somehow, however, she's completely oblivious to the fact that a guy friend of hers is deeply in love with her, and she tortures him with every date or boyfriend she gets. When she wins an internet contest for a date with millionaire movie star Tad Hamilton (Josh Dushamel) - a guy whose real life probably resembles a Penthouse letter, "Dear Penthouse, you are not going to BELIEVE what happened to me last night!" - there is no choice for Pete but to make a last ditch effort to win Rosalee's heart. Despite the fact that Tad is known as a womanizer in the media, and has no doubt bedded countless models, he quickly becomes smitten by Rosalee, a girl whose looks and smile can melt the average man. Now both guys like the girl. We all know that in reality it ends up with the hot chick and the millionaire, with the Hollywood bad-boy eventually cheating on her with a high-priced hooker on Sunset Blvd. Nonetheless, the stereotypical battle ensues between Pete and Tad (one of the stupidest names in history).Since this is a vapid romantic comedy, you can guess how the predictable competition plays out. Unfortunately, this movie breaks relationship and Ladder Theory Law: once on the friend ladder, no man can climb from it to the love interest ladder. That's the biggest flaw. Admittedly, it's not my normal cup o' tea, but it's a nearly flawless, albeit lazy and stereotypical date movie, and I can't see how the little girl in every woman wouldn't wish to be Rosalee.

Tad Hamilton Sweeps us off our Feet.

I attended a sneek preview of Win A Date With Tad Hamilton and I thought it was a great movie that taught us what true love is all about and I left with a heart filled with love. I think this film is the best love story in a long time that makes you feel so happy.Josh Duhmel and Topher Grace were funny and made me laugh through the whole movie. I would suggest this movie to anyone who is in love or want's to fall in love.

Not Bad, but a bit predictable

"Win A Date With Tad Hamilton" was a good movie, albiet predictable andcliche, but, what romantic comedy isn't these days, it was great toseeTopher Grace in a role other than Eric Forman or bit parts in Soderberghmovies, he definitely has real potential to be leading man materiallaterin his career, but not to far off I am sure, this was a great start forhim, Kate Bosworth was stunning as always, but I just didn't feel muchchemistry between her and Josh Duhmel, maybe that was the point, thescenes between her and Topher were well done and they showed a chemistrywith each other, but I wish there had been more scenes with them, andletthe story between them evolve, other than that, it had alot of energy, some wonderful scenes between Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes as Josh's Agentand manager, and Josh wasn't the typical slimeball actor that you wouldexpect he actually showed tons of heart, and I think that he was verycharming in spots, I think this film will find the audience that likedthedirectors first movie "Legally Blonde", so, cliched as it was, it wasagood way to spend 100 minutes. 7/10

A surprisingly pleasant film!

Whilst many other comparator movies flounder with appaling scripts, wooden acting, unimaginative direction or plain cinematography thismovie manages to stand out by the fact that it displays a certain levelof aptitude in pretty much all areas. The result is a perfectlycharming and watchable movie. Looking at the make-up of the movie it is very apparent that itsprimary design is to provide a platform for a number of people to cuttheir teeth in the big-screen domain - many of the cast haveestablished credibility on the small screen and the crew have somecredits, but yet to go big. Interestingly the movie provides a decentvehicle thanks to a competent script around a safe storyline, smartdirection of a cast who seem to have a genuinely good time making themovie. Fun and surprising aspects of the movie include the familiarfaces you will see in cameo/small roles and the outstanding soundtrackwith a choice selection of music tracks from a variety of lesser-knownartists.And for those who have the opportunity to watch this movie on DVD youhave the opportunity for a much more tickling experience with thedeleted scenes that have sadly been removed (the scenes with ParisHilton would have added so much more spice) and a gag reel that showshumour behind the humour. If you are looking to see something that does not leave you wanting toslash your wrists (Mystic River), challenge your intellect (MulhollandDrive), have you struggling with subtitles (Y Tu Mama Tambien),suspending disbelief (Die Hard), suffering a chick-flick (Troy - ohyeah - it was a chick flick) or oggle-fest (Charlie's Angels) then thismovie will satisfy.

Cute Concept, Poorly Executed

The premise of this movie had potential to be a decent fun and girliecomedy. However, the poor lead casting, and subsequent poor acting leftthe movie lacking. The film is shot in a bright and quirky way -consistent with what the script called for. It's from the same directoras Legally Blonde - so imagine that kind of atmosphere. However, performances from Kate Bosworth, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Topher Graceseverely hindered the likability and relate-ability of the characters.First, Kate Bosworth, a self proclaimed blue blood, is not convincingat all as a sweet small town girl. Like Goodwin and Grace, Bosworthlacks the charm that no amount of "beauty" can make up for in acharacter meant to be a moral center. Not to mention the awkward waythe cutesy phrases came out - "shake a doo" or "wack a doo", whatever. It was so unnatural from her. And the "awed" expression when meetingTad - awful. She looked constipated, not surprised. Ginnifer Goodwin overacted her part as zany BFF. She was over the top, which took away from the purpose of the best friend. Her antics did notsupport the lead, they detracted from them. Finally, Topher Grace - Yes, he fit the "nerd" description, and thefast witted kind of speech pattern, but again, no charm. Instead, Gracecame off as a jerk, simply sabotaging his best friend's relationship.Even the turning point where he "just wants her to be happy", even ifit is with Tad, isn't believable - it's selfish because of the pridebehind it - not to mention the self pitying tone.Pros? There are some - like the flawlessness of Gary Cole, KathrynHahn, Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes. And Josh Duhamel is pretty convincingas a self centered, slightly stupid, but still surprising kind ofmainstream and lacking substance actor. But more importantly - he makeshis character LIKABLE. And he's not the one you should want "Rosalee"to end up with, but he is.This movie would have been infinitely better with someone like KristenBell or Elisha Cuthbert as Rosalee, Mila Kunis or Christina Ricci asBFF Cathy, and someone like - Jake Gyllenhaal or Jonathan Jackson asPete. All in all, I want the $5 it cost me to give this movie a chance, but Ican live the hour and a half it took from my life, though I'm notthrilled.

UG!

Worst movie I have ever seen. I won't go into how terrible it was. It'stoo traumatic. It was poorly written and poorly acted. (Topher Gracedidtry to do his best.) Only about 30 people walked out, but it was a freepreview. If I had paid for it, I would have been upset. But we juststarted making fun of it instead. I don't like commenting during a movieorpeople talking back to the screen, but in this case it just didn'tmatter.By the end of the movie people were just calling out for it to stop andsaying, "Oh, no, you are not going to do that!!" (Not because somethingterrible was going to happen, but because it was so predictable, rightdownto the exact words!)Stinker, complete and utter. Save your money.

You can't win a date with this film

In a movie where the characters constantly go from babbling fools toShakespearean linguists, it's hard to take anything seriously. ThoughTopher Grace provides a couple of solid laughs, it wasn't enough to keepmeinterested, even for an hour and a half. Rating: *

A lightweight 'rom-com' that's entertaining enough if you're in the right mood.

Kate Bosworth, who was so good in 'Blue Crush', plays Rosalee Futch, astore clerk in a small town in West Virginia. Topher Grace plays PeteMonash, and who also happens to manage the store that Rosalee works in.Both have grown up together and are close friends. But Pete secretlywants a relationship with Rosalee and is too shy to do anything aboutit. This may have gone on until both were in their 70s, had nothandsome Tad Hamilton, played by Josh Duhamel, come into the picture.See, Tad is a matinée idol movie star, all the girls young and oldswoon when they see him on the big screen, and meeting Tad Hamiltonwould be enough for any of them. This movie is titled 'Win A Date WithTad Hamilton', and that should give the astute viewer a rough hint ofwhat the story line is. This is nothing but a cute fluff of a romanticcomedy, but it does have positive things to say about deeperrelationships vs quick attractions.SPOILERS follow, do not read any further, OK!? Tad Hamilton's screenroles make him look perfect, but in fact his private life, filled withbooze, girls, and fast cars, is a mess. After some negative publicity, his agents dream up the 'win a date' contest for a charitable cause tomend things. And, Rosalee wins the date, flies to California, as she isdeparting Pete yells to her, "Protect your carnal treasure", intimatingthat she is still a virgin, which would be in character for her. Thedate goes well, she goes back to work in the store, and as Pete isabout to ask her to go with him to a bigger job at a new city, pluscollege in Virginia, Tad Hamilton shows up. He had become awed byRosalee's basic approach to life and wanted to spend time with her, learning to be a better person. And just maybe, having options on hercarnal treasure! Eventually Rosalee finds what a shallow person he is,and always will be, looks up Pete after she rejected 'his greatprofession of love', and the movie ends with them bound for each other.Cute, sweet, not long lasting.

Fluffy little film

I admit it. I saw this movie simply because I wanted to see something lightand fluffy. I got what I wanted. Yes, it's a chick flick. Yes, it's predictable. Yes, it has the typicalHollywood ending. But the film never said it was going to be anything butthat, and that's why I liked it. No political agendas. No heavy dramaand/or gut-wrenching scenes. In fact, there really wasn't anything in thisfilm that was really negative. It was just a cute, fluffy little film thatwas intended to make you fill light-hearted when it was over. And for me,that is exactly what it did. Rank: 8

Win a Date with Disappointment

I wanted to love this movie. Honestly. But after about 30 minutes of horrid acting and predictable plot lines, I have to be truthful: The movie is awful. And for me to say that about a romantic comedy, that's pretty rare. I just kept wanting Kate Bosworth to loosen up. I wanted to believe one thing she was saying. I got to the point where I didn't care what happened. All I wanted to see was the credits. I'm not sure whether to blame the director, actors, or writer for this poor film, so I'll just blame them all and call it a day. If you want a good romantic comedy. Try Serendipity, Kissing Jessica Stein, or Shallow Hal.

Cute and fun with an old touch

I saw this movie in theaters with some friends and I came out having watched one of the cutest love stories of the year so far. Although it is very predictable and tells a story I swear has been told before, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton is a really sweet love story about Rosalee, a single, small-town girl, who, along with her best friend/co-worker, dreams of meeting the hottest celebrity at the time, Tad Hamilton. While surfing the internet on break she discovers a pop-up--"Win A Date With Tad Hamilton!" But, of course, the movie wouldn't go on without some sort of conflict, so into the scene enters Pete, Rosalee's boss at the grocery store where she works, who just doesn't know how to ask out the girl he wants. Before she knows it, Rosalee is caught in what she thinks is love with Tad, but it will take a REALLY good friend (be it a newly met celebrity, a best friend [who is equally obsessed], or a boy she's known for a very long time) to tell her the point she's really missing. This movie is great, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Entertaining and well acted romantic comedy that lets you root for the normal guy

Hollywood occasionally produces a underrated, sweet, and genuinely fun romantic comedy that flies beneath everyone's radar. Win a Date With Tad Hamilton is one of those movies. Perhaps because of the unwieldy title, or because it was surrounded by more hyped movies when it was released, it never got the recognition it deserved. Starring a radiant Kate Bosworth, a sweet and touching Topher Grace, and a suprisingly good Josh Dushamel, Win a Date flips the romantic formula a bit, pitting an ordinary hometown boy against the perfect, square-jawed hollywood star, all for the love of an innocently beautiful woman.Rosalee Futch, played by the radiant Kate Bosworth, is a prototypical, naive, romantic downhome small town girl. She has a sweet widower dad(Gary Cole), a quirky friend, and a job at the local Piggly Wiggly with her life long buddy, Pete (Topher Grace), who is hopelessly in love with her, but never has acted on it.(this is not suprising though. If you are best friends with the perfect woman, you will sometimes take friendship over potential rejection) There is just something about Grace as an actor though, that is sweet and endearing, and makes you root for him.Meanwhile, Rosalee's favorite Hollywood star, Tad Hamilton(Josh Dushamel) is having a few problems with the tabloids splashing his boozing, womanizing, reckless behavior all over the front pages. In need of some image makeover, his same-named management team (Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes) creates a old Hollywood style Win a Date contest, which Rosalee wins. Not all that suprisingly, Rosalee sparks something inside Tad on their date, and he chases after her back to her small town in West Virginia, where he must compete with Pete for her love.Funny, sweet, and occasionally dorky, Win a Date is a fine movie for a evening at home, and a nice addition to a romantic comedy collection.

The Stars Are For Topher

Do most of the characters lack depth? Yes. Is the plot line predictable? Yes. Is the storyline unrealistic? Yes. Do the sincere character portrayals make the movie? YES.This is not a perfect film by any means, and if anyone besides a very polished, very charming, very next-door-normal Topher Grace were in Pete's role, I would probably pitch it into the abyss with the rest of the abysmally-written box office traps that are chick flicks. To its credit, though, this film uses a cliched plotline to convey some really adorable characters and a few very simple, innocent human truths. "Win a Date"'s humor has to be perceived in the trivialities of Topher's facial expressions and dialogue; look closely, and it's hysterical. The log-splitting scene has to be one of the funniest and most charming big-strong-he-man-competing-for-the-girl scenes I've watched. Topher is also capable of such depth of expression that the viewer is truly able to trust his character and believe his role, and that, I believe, makes the movie.Secondly, while this movie is unrealistic, I think the reason it's so enchanted me is that it's what we all wish our love stories could be. While I always sneer at the illicit flings that magically transform into "true love" in other chick flicks, there's something about Pete and Rosalee's long, but undiscovered "romance" that really attracts me. It's not romance in the traditional, mainstream sense--it's more wholesome than that. And in the end, I think it's the wholesomeness that gets me. No, it's not the way things are. But it's the way things should be.

Rent This And Win A Date With Hollywood's Newfound Cultural Correctness

I rented this movie one dateless night along with 'Big Fish.' I hadbeen waiting for 'Big Fish' on DVD ever since I learned Billy Reddenwas in it. He was the banjo boy in 'Deliverance.' 'Big Fish' and 'Win aDate' make a great combo because each represents a different kind ofHollywood 'flyover country' mythmaking. 'Big Fish,' a sort of'anti-Forrest Gump,' gives you 1950s Alabama as a velvia-toned'Pleasantville' where black and white kids play together and go to thesame churches. No lynchings, no George Wallace. This deception is part of a sly joke, part of the mythical life storyof the lead character exposed as myth. Grownup Billy Redden was in themovie, for about fifteen seconds, sitting on the porch of apicket-fenced little house facing the village green in an immaculatelywhitewashed New England looking Brigadoon of a town lost in the Alabamaswamps. He was, of course again playing dueling banjos, placed therejust to remind you that what you otherwise see is all just a big fishtale.'Win a Date's' deception is not sly understatement, but glaringovercompensation. The movie is set in Frazier's Bottom, a real town inWest Virginia, but don't get out a map and plan a trip. Country roadswon't ever take you back to this movie's West Virginia, no matter howmany 'wrong turns' you make driving them in vain looking for it.Not all West Virginians are inbred pot growing cannibals, but thesefolks are too clean, too sober, too blandly prosperous, and completelydevoid of the diphthongally challenged. Not the slightest hint of nasaltwang by the actors, not one sodomy joke, everyone wears shoes, no onewears overalls, and nary a 4x4 anywhere. In the local bar hangout, mendon't wear cowboy hats, or John Deere caps. There is a dart board likein 'Cheers,' but no pool table. And the music, well it ain't evercountry. The biker chick 'bartendress' (the lone local with asemi-authentic, but discreet Appalachian accent) might gladly serve youa latte or a bottle of Samuel Adams, if you ask. This is not moonshine,or meth lab America. The story, of course, is total cliché. A checker at the overly modernPiggly Wiggly named Rosalee (don't expect total cultural correctness)surfs across an internet contest to 'win a date' with a second-ratebubble gum 'bad boy' matinée idol named Tad Hamilton. After being eggedon by fellow checker and gal pal Cathy, she enters, wins, flies to LA,has the date, refuses to compromise her Heartland chastity, and fliesback nonetheless satisfied to Red State America. Tad follows her homebecause he is smitten with her virtue, and of course he wants to seduceher eventually. Standing in his way, if reluctantly, is Pete, Rosalee'snot so down home childhood friend and her dorky, precocious boss at thePiggly Wiggly. He of course is also smitten with her interminablechastity, but stereotypically too shy and unsure of himself to make anymoves that might threaten it, or their friendship should she (likely)reject him as a lover. In the end, you know who gets the girl, with her'carnal treasure' still buried for him to dig up off camera when 'X'marks the right time. The dialogue is hopelessly sappy, featuringgroaners like the difference between 'big love' and 'great love,' andhow to win the heart of your true love by telling her she has sixdifferent types of smiles.Midwesterner Josh Duhamel surprising plays Tad as lonely and confusedin his fame and wealth, rather than as a simple predatory Lothario. LAborn Kate Bosworth is out of place as a Piggly Wiggly checker, butTennessean Gennifer Goodwin seems convincing as Cathy, right down toher Pringles enhanced figure, good ole girl hairdos, and bubbly, slightly trashy personae. The real star is New Yorker Topher Grace, a blend of young JamesStewart and Alan Alda: vulnerable, sympathetic, yet obnoxious. He playsinsecure Pete as a sort of straight 'gay' guy constantly engaged inwitless Wildean banter when around Rosalee. His entire social life, when not sitting home alone reading Flannery O'Connor, is spent as a'third girl friend' to Rosalee and Cathy, tagging along to see all thenew Tad Hamilton movies at the local theater, etc. The classic scene inthis movie is when Pete, thoroughly frustrated at his looming loss ofRosalee as gal pal and fantasy lover, confronts Tad in, of all places, the men's restroom at the local bar. "You win," the skinny Pete tellsTad, "but if you break her heart, I'll tear you to pieces with my barehands, or … (with eyes rolling while reconsidering)… with VICIOUSRHETORIC!" Do West Virginians act and live like the people in 'Win ADate' any more than they do in a movie like 'Wrong Turn?' Certainlynot, but seeing Hollywood get it wrong to the other extreme is good. The original ending in the deleted scenes on the DVD, however, hintthat the original concept was more condescending. One of the reasons 'Win A Date' probably didn't end up a 'Sweet HomeAlabama' type putdown (something like 'Jessica Lynch, after the nudephotos, Wins a Date With Colin Farrell, playing himself') can likely betraced directly to the outcry over CBS's stupid idea to do a 'RealBeverly Hillbillies.' reality show. This idea certainly would havebecome reality but for Robert Byrd, a certain Senator from….WestVirginia, who railed loudly against it right on the Senate floor. Hisreasoning was that if Hollywood would rightfully shudder at the idea ofdoing a modern minstrel show (by anyone other than Spike Lee), or a newpidgin English version of Charlie Chan, why were hillbillies still ripefor vicious ridicule? Maybe they aren't so much anymore, given what yousee in this movie. As far as this hillbilly is concerned, that's a goodthing.

Date with Tad No Winner Despite Dashing Duhamel

I was really disappointed with this movie, with it's talented supporting cast and a somewhat major director I was expecting more than just another plastic teen comedy (albeit a santized 60's style one). Anyone who has ever seen five movie comedies in their life can predict every step of this picture. A grocery store checkout girl wins an internet contest for a date with a popular movie heartthrob she has a crush on. Her store's manager meanwhile has had a longtime crush on her. After the publicized date, the girl returns home only to find the movie star in pursuit. Guess who wins the girl?? Guess. (And for bonus points, tell me what's two times three.) Of the cast, only Josh Duhamel is memorable and that may be only because he is gorgeous, has charisma, and the camera loves him. Certainly it can't be denied Tad the movie star comes across a nicer, friendlier, and more good-natured guy than store manager Pete. These reviewers who are ga-ga over Topher Grace - are they all under 21??? I can't imagine any woman over 25 dumb enough to choose a Grace over a Duhamel and that's not considering Duhamel's being the better looking guy. Grace's sour, sarcastic character is a real turnoff yet we are supposed to root for him simply because he is a "regular joe". One of the unintentionally funny bits in the movie is where someone praises his smiles, we have seen nothing but smirks and sneers from him the entire film! And then there is a jaw-dropping scene after Bosworth has returned home and Grace lets her have it warning her against Duhamel, talking explicitly to her in front of male customers no less. Maybe this scene is to forecast what an idiot Rosalee is, any woman with any dignity and/or common sense would sue his loser ass for sexual harassment. Just why is Tad pursuing Rosalee anyway? They clearly have no sparks on their California date. Even she seems disinterested despite her crush. This movie also has some of the worst film continuity and sets I have ever seen for a major picture. Tad buys a farmhouse in West Virginia and yet later in the picture is back in the crappy local motel. Kate's Beverly Hills hotel room looks scarcely better than the redneck inn Tad's at in West Virginia. Millionaire Tad's wardrobe seems no more expensive than the locals clothing to say nothing that the Piggly Wiggly (a fairly small-sized grocery store) appears to be a huge store and this small town has a huge metropolitan-like movie theater. The movie ends with a goo-goo precious ending chasing down Pete but if this were real life the next chapter would be just as predictable. What I really want to see is a sequel to Tad Hamilton ten years down the road. Rosalee is now over 200 pounds with a houseful of brats while Pete now aims his hostility and sarcasm toward her all the while cheating on her with the current teenaged cashier. Rosalee cries into her pillow clutching the latest issue of the National Enquirer picturing the still beautiful Tad on the cover with his latest gorgeous girlfriend, Tad having forgotten Rosalee existed about three weeks after the last time he saw her. Now that would be an awesome movie and a honest one too!

As a female from WV, may I say this movie gave a bad name to us all!

This has got to be one of the *worst* films I believe I have ever beentortured into watching. And yes, I was tortured. First, I am a femalefrom West Virginia and let me say none of my friends has EVER dared tosay yikesabee. That has to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard.Secondly, the lead character Rosealee didn't even have an accent!Thirdly, yawn, this movie was campy. So campy and so cheesy that itshould have never been put to paper... Much less film, it is to laugh. It would have more uses in a latrine. So, yeah, two big thumbs downfrom me. I feel degraded somehow for having watched it. All copiesshould be found and burned. WV should have a televised apology from thedirector.

What a crock

This movie is harmless and relatively enjoyable up until the lasttwenty minutes, at which time Luketic forces the characters into anending that can be picked from the trailers, but which is absolutelyunbelievable and useless.Tad, on the one hand, is awesome. He boozes, smokes, nails women hedoesn't even know, and is also very charismatic and engaging. Pete, onthe other, is a totally gormless schmuck, who ought to continuemanaging his supermarket, and leave fit women like Rosalee to themasters (like Tad).Luketic could have done something very interesting, like for instanceend the movie with Petey crying on the toilet while Tad stealsRosalee's "carnal treasure" in his private jet; yet he forgoes thisexceptional ending with the most simplistic (and idiotic) plotcontrivance yet. I wish I knew six different rude finger gestures foryou, Mr. Luketic. In other news, Sean Hayes and Nathan Lane are grossly underused, andKate Bosworth does not look nearly as lovely as she did in 'BlueCrush'. I did, however, enjoy Rosalee's dad as a well informed movienerd, reading Variety (not IMDb?) and wearing a project greenlightt-shirt.In conclusion, avoid this like the plague.

Predictable teen comedy

A predictable teen comedy but with enjoyable ensemble performances. One question: why is Gary Cole (the father) wearing a "Project Greenlight" T-shirt. The movie is not a Miramax product so why the endorsement of the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon project?
