Toby Kebbell..Need I say More!

This review is from: Wilderness (DVD) I thought that this movie was going to be really terrible, but I actually enjoyed it. It was my first time seeing actor Toby Kebbell, who may I say is amazing. It also opened my eyes to other british films. Definitely would recommend!

WATCH OUT FOR THE SHRUBBERY

I had to mention that because there are a couple of times in this movie when the killer camouflages himself as turf and when the soon to be victims walk away, the shrubbery slithers off in the opposite direction. This sounds absurd but in this movie it is effective...but funny. There's nothing funny when the slaughter starts and it can be startling and very brutal. A group of young male delinquents are brought to a now deserted island wilderness to try and see if these somewhat nasty misfits can straighten themselves out by camping and learning to survive the wilderness and each other. They meet up with their female counterparts-but the bad boys and girls are the usual assortment-the bully, the coward, the wimp, the misunderstood one and of course a traitor. One of the males at the young juvenile offenders facility had recently committed suicide and the killer is the shrubbery, i mean the boys' father. This is not a spoiler since the killers identity is known pretty quick. The movie is well-made and directed and has genuine suspense and the killings are brutal, raw and very very gory including someone being devoured by a pack of dogs. The biggest surprise of the movie is the killer has "inside" help.If you like seeing thuggish brats being picked off one by one this is a movie I would recommend. This is indeed a spoiler alert but someone made a big mistake when they show a knife fight between a British commando and a youth and the youth wins. If you can ignore this supreme piece of silliness-the movie on the whole is a keeper. BOOYAH! That booyah was for my friend Jason.

revenge is sweet

i think this movie must of been made about the same time of severance, but severance got a cinema release. both movies have the same idea'sand plot but i think wilderness has the edge, with a shoe string budgetand no real big name's in this movie it is still gripping, gory edge ofthe seat stuff. the acting isn't Oscar material but this makes it abetter movie . some of the characters are descent and you get theusually women that get on your nerves, i can't understand why there isa big deal about Hollywood horrors , when English movies are a lotbetter with no budget. so if you want to spend a night in with the Mrsor your boozy mates this is the one for you this weekend.

Predictable and Typical

Well, what do I say, really? This film (for me) was typical Britishhorror. There is a lot of gore, but it all gets abit tiresome after awhile....yes, you actually get sick of seeing it. I am big fan ofhorror movies (a very big fan in fact) and enjoy seeing gore, you know, the type that makes you feel sick and hope to god it never happens toyou. And I have to admit, that this film does make you think that insome places. But, to start with, this film sorta takes you in abit, you're followingthe story, wondering "whats going to happen"...so thats a good thingright? Well, the first few times you see the gore, you think "oh mygod, thats gross"...then you see it again and you're like "ewww"...thenyou see it again and eventually, you end up just watching this gorewith no reaction what-so-ever because you've seen enough of italready....and this, is a common problem with most British horror films(like 28 days later). Some of the acting isn't brilliant either...and correct me if i'mwrong, but i got the impression this was a pretty low budget movie. Youcould predict pretty much everything from start to finish, and the socalled "twist" at the end...is abit poor....the fact they couldn'tthink of anything else (but i won't spoil the 'fantastic' ending foryou) If you're a fan of repetitive and predictable gore...go ahead andwatch this. But if you'd rather watch a film with abit morebrains...give this one a miss.

Another Great British Horror

Brilliant, Wilderness follows as a triumph for British horror filmslike 28 Days Later & Dog Soldiers. Even the storyline is exceptional, juveniles bully fellow prisoner to suicide, prison warden orders themto be taken to an abandoned Army island. Dead juvenile's father comesto the island and kills them one by one. Simple and entertaining allthe same.I've seen some other comments for this film, some very childish andstupid. Well what would you lot know, Wilderness may not have the bigbudget like some of 2006's other horror releases but in my opinion itsucceeded. Maybe there wasn't enough violence or action for you, but itwas more than enough for me to give it my rating. British Horror rules!

British horror neat-o

i have watched wilderness and enjoyed it with great pleasure at fist ithought it started off similar to the movie "band of the hand" were agroup of juvenile delinquent's are sent to a swamp to learn how tosurvive and be to be punished, but were that move got silly, wildernesswas neat-o ,marvolous, splendidly suspense full, tip-top gore,horrorflick-British style-anyway i think its a British film. also some goodhorror movies popping up from there.anyway i was very pleased with it,, seems like every scene had somefrightening moments to it,nice cruel death scenes, just right on thegore ,great horror flick, will watch again and again. will also lookforward to other Michael bassets stuff

A very good modern slasher

After one of their roommates kills himself, a group of juveniledelinquents are brought to a remote forested island once used only forArmy training exercises. Once there, the members of the group are, oneby one, viciously murdered in various ways. The 2000s have not been a very good decade for the slasher subgenre.Over the past eight years, there have only been a few films in thesubgenre that I would consider very good. Wilderness, however, willjoin the ranks of those good slashers. Possessing pretty mucheverything that a horror or thriller fan could want, the U.K. horrorflick really works well with a good amount of suspense, scares, and agood story. Rookie screenwriter Dario Poloni delivers a strong scriptthat flows nicely to create a thrilling ride through the forest ofhorror. The sophomore effort from Michael Bassett (writer/director ofDeathwatch (2003) (a film I will now be seeking out)) adapts the scriptwell to the screen and utilizes the wooded setting well, although thefilm falters visually a little bit due to some poor camera work fromveteran cinematographer Peter Robertson. Sean Pertwee, a personalfavourite, delivers his usual strong performance as thewarden-turned-scout-leader of the delinquents. The teens are also goodin their roles, though occasionally show some inexperience. Overall, Wilderness is a very good modern-day slasher that fans of DogSoldiers and Lord of the Flies should check out. It's chock-full ofgore, suspense, and tension. Highly recommended.Final verdict: 8/10.-AP3-

A dog's meal that seems tasty but ends up regurgitated.

Filmed in Northern Ireland and financed partly with the assistance ofthe U.K. Film Council's premiere fund and the National Lottery (U.K.),Wilderness is something of a milestone for most involved. As itsMichael J. Bassett's first movie, as well as numerous cast members toboot, his first time as director feels a little tame and toothless. This being a little prisoner movie while based on the theme ofrehabilitation, where the inmates are nasty, grotesque and cheap asthis movie is, regrettably, as cheap. We have for example, RichieCampell as Jethro, Lenora Crichlow as Mandy and Adam Deacon as Blue(Ali G Indahouse, 2002), all English T.V. actors and now turning theirtalents to the big screen. The young lady Alex Reid, as Louise has someexperience with the movies with Arachnid (2001) and The Descent (2005)to her credit. The main draw here is the charismatic Sean Pertwee (DogSoldiers, 2002), as this band of brothers guide on an uninhabitedisland known as The Wilderness, an old army training ground handed overto the prison service for the aid of character building, there's anirony here somewhere, and rehabilitation.A good concept in theory but executed in the manner of amateur hour ata local movie making convention. I don't mean to sound low-spirited, Iwant these actors' and actresses' careers to take off, and its makerstoo, this is a big step into the void of movie making, while theirtalents might have been appreciated on the small screen here they areunderpowered by the transgression to wide screen. Wilderness may havemissed the boat where charisma and originality is concerned, but as afirst attempt, it is an okay try. The direction is sustainable with asteady pace and at times atmosphere, but it does need more work, andwith a half-decent sense of photography from Peter J. Robertson, thetrees and the woods is not the place to be going at anytime if Peter J.Robertson is in charge. With the help of one Mark Thomas (Dog Soldiers,2002), and his musical score, it can just about make it, but a goodmovie needs goodness from all directions too. What has let this movie down is its terrible script (Dario Poloni), andextremely tacky dialogue that these unfortunate actors, and we too, have to suffer, at times; it reaches beyond cringing to sheerembarrassment. This is inner-city underclass and its flotsam and jetsamparodying and nothing else, and the actors here are just trying toohard to be something they are not and it shows. Was there ever a periodof research for these roles or were they just thrown together with thebad, the good and the ugly? Also, too, is the predicable plot, not justthe storyline but the actual plot, you can see this coming well intothe first half, it's only a matter of principle to see this to the endto prove yourself right. Wilderness may have been a learning curve forall those involved, and we too have learnt that we should not judgethis cover until we have seen it from the inside out.

A poorly thought out British survivalist horror movie.

A bunch of teenage delinquents are taken to a remote British island inorder to 'build character', but are picked off by an unseen assailantin a variety of gruesome ways.Wilderness, a violent British made survivalist horror, is anotherclunker from director Michael J. Bassett, the man who gave us thedecidedly lame WW1 chiller Deathwatch. Once again, Bassett presents uswith another poorly thought out movie saddled with a ridiculousconceit, a poor cast (when Sean Pertwee is the best actor on the bill, something is definitely up), and a very bad script.Even if a large picturesque island paradise off the coast of the UKactually existed, the idea that it could possibly remain totallyuninhabited is unbelievably daft. The thought that it would be reservedsolely for the use of correctional facilities is absurd. And the notionthat a group of violent offenders would be taken to said islandaccompanied by a single supervisor is totally moronic. And with the majority of the movie's characters being juvenile scumbagsand unlikable thugs, it is impossible to feel any sympathy for most ofthose who die. In fact, I was quite happy to see these miserableexcuses for human beings get their comeuppance. In an attempt to distract his audience from all of these shortcomings,Bassett piles on the gore, with maulings by savage dogs, crossbowattacks, dismemberment and immolation. But even a high level ofimpressively realistic bloodletting doesn't stop one from noticing thatthe film is basically a bit of a stinker.

Gruesome & brutal experience

Surprisingly effective and sometimes terrifying British horror thriller. Takes a standard horror movie premise and ups the anti with some unpredictable twists and turns. The plot is simple and straightforward, the locale atmospheric, and the direction taught. I had never heard of this film so was immediately surprised by the strong performances and gut wrenching action. A good hybrid between the interesting horror movie "American Gothic" and the action classic "Deliverance". This one goes straight for the throat and is pretty unrelenting as far as violence; so not for the faint of heart. This is a wild ride and I'm wildly enthusiastic about recommending. A great discovery, for those that take their meat raw.

"Wilderness" is gory, scary and impressive horror movie!

This movie has "Dog Soldiers" soul. A lot of scenes are from "DogSoldiers", but this one is more interesting. It makes survival horrorgo up one generation. The tagline says true (It's not about revenge. It's about punishment), but you will know what I'm talking about if youwatched it.Actors looks like prisoners, so that makes this movie be more real. They acted very good too. They very empathize in they roles. Script wasinteresting. Idea was a little bit copied from "Dog Soldiers", but Ithink, that this is not a huge problem, that makes this movie bad.I give to this movie 7/10

Load of Rubbish

This was a crappy copy of Dog Soldiers, without the added comedyelement and the excitement of werewolves. The only good thing about itwas Sean Pertwee, and he didn't last five minutes, after that I mightas well have fallen asleep. Considering the makers obviously cast himto draw the crowds to the only known name in the film, he was vastlyunder-used and under-credited.The unknown young actors did do a good job, so all credit to them, butthe movie itself was very mediocre. If this does better than Dog Soldiers, which in my mind should havegained far more recognition than it did, I will be extremelydisappointed.

Director Michael J. Bassett appears to have discovered his stride

Recipe: take one large dollop of Lord of the Flies, toss in a fewheaping tablespoons of Southern Comfort, sprinkle with traces ofDeliverance, and add The Most Dangerous Game to taste. Blend on highfor 110 minutes and presto, you've got a tasty treat of Wilderness, thenew survival thriller by Director Michael J. Bassett.Set on a remote uninhabited island used by Britain's correctionalservices as a retreat for troubled youth, the movie tells the story ofa group of juvenile criminals who get sent to the remote location onlyto find themselves being stalked by a trained killer bent on revenge.Screened at the 2006 edition of Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival, themovie doesn't make much effort to conceal the identity of the stalker. In fact, most viewers can figure this out in the first 15 minutes. However keeping secrets isn't what this story is about. Rather, it'sabout the thrill of hunting humans, the most sophisticated predator onthe planet, and the diverse and innovative tricks involved.Featuring Sean Pertwee, who seems to own a clause in British moviecontracts saying he will appear in every UK thriller/horror film underproduction, the film showcases the talents of a young cast of unknownswho, while not demanded of Shakespearean performances, nonetheless turnin flawless performances to round out the movie.Bassett, whose previous directorial debut was 2002's intriguing butflawed Deathwatch, seems to have found his stride with this effort.Scenes appear carefully thought out and executed, with a nice attentionto detail. He clearly understands how to pace a film of this nature, and what works and what doesn't in what clearly was a demanding shootinvolving attack dogs, forest chases, fires and numerous stunts. The movie has something for every fan of the genre; beheadings, viciousforest traps, maulings, being eaten alive, crossbows, knife fights, skinheads, near drownings, the list goes on.Viewers can add this to the ever growing list of British horror filmssuch as The Descent, Dog Soldiers, and 28 Days Later (to name only afew) that are currently setting the world standard for deliveringquality cinematic chills and thrills.

Suspenseful modern horror

Wilderness isn't a great modern horror film, but it does a good job oftaking old ideas and rehashing them into a fresh and exciting plotline. The influences to the film are clear, with the much-copiedclassic 'The Most Dangerous Game' being fused with more modern filmssuch as 'Battle Royale'. The basic plot line isn't too far removed fromyour common slasher film, but director Michael J. Bassett gives himfilm an extra edge by putting the focus on the struggle as theprotagonists battle with the wilderness (naturally), the main threatand even each other. The plot focuses on a group of juveniledelinquents who are sent to an uninhabited island when a young ladstaying in their home is found to have committed suicide. However, theisland doesn't turn out to be uninhabited at all, as aside from a localhermit; there's also a group of girls there with the same idea - andsome mad psycho with a crossbow and a group of bloodthirsty GermanShepherds, who is seemingly hell bent on not letting any of them offthe island alive! The director seems more bothered about atmosphere and tension thancharacters; as while some of the people inhabiting the film are welldefined, their actions are often questionable and none of them areparticularly interesting. But even so, this isn't a problem; as thefilm is constantly suspenseful and the fact that there is an unseenpsycho in the woods bodes well with the atmosphere on display. MichaelJ. Bassett seems keen to go against the clichés of the horror genre, asthere is no mystery to the killer's identity after the first half ofthe film and the crossbow weapon works well. There's a fair amount ofgore on display, although the film never matches the initial deathsequence in the wilderness in terms of gore. The acting isn't terrible, but the 'thick' British accents sound really phoney to an actual Britlike me. Sean Pertwee is the only recognised name on the cast list, butthe rest of the cast; which is made up of mostly British televisionstars, provide adequate performances. Overall, Wilderness is certainlya good horror film and comes recommended.

Intense and gory yet unoriginal and unbelievable

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS THROUGHOUT*** This film begins interestingly, following the story of a new inmate at a harsh boys institute and howdifficult he finds it to settle in. Soon the inmates go on a excursionto an abandoned island to do some training. They soon realise thatthey're not alone and there's actually a group of females on the islandwho are also on an excursion. Anger grows between the opposingexcursion leaders and they agree to keep their groups at distance.Testosterone fuelled male inmates can't help but make advances to theopposing female camp. When advances are rejected a dead body is foundnot long after. The girls obviously think it was the males yet theysoon realise, when a male inmate gets killed, that there's some otherthreat on the island. This film shamelessly takes ideas from "the lord of the flies" andposes the question of "what are people capable of when there's no lawto abide by?" A certain sci-fi quality is added to the film when a packof dogs are introduced and begin killing at their master's command. The film is well acted out by young and talented British actors anddelivers some brutal and jumpy sequences. Worth a look but not overlyimpressive.

Crap....

This film has got to be a joke, is this what British cinema has cometo? The dialogue in this film was poor and I'm sure if you were to seesomeones head stuck on a spike, you wouldn't stand there and walk awaywithout screaming your lungs out. This film can be compared to a badversion of dog soldiers. My opinion, don't waist your time with thisfilm. A good story line but badly acted out, I suggest you see BattleRoayal, same island concept with people killing each other but moreinteresting. Im surprised a Hollywood version is not out yet sinceHollywood remakes everything. The film does have some gory bits withquite a fair bit of blood.

2012-04-20 19:19:58

Inaccurate movie description is just the beginning

Not very good acting and the plot was pretty much nonexistent. There was a lot of blood and gore that might have distracted some viewers from this, but I don't think it was enough. Just an overall depressing movie for lots of reasons.

Another crap Brit horror flick

Rubbish Brit horror/thriller type film aimed at a stupid teen targetaudience. Im sorry to say but I just wasted 90 mins or so watchingthis. If you like teen nobodies trying to act in a lame films be myguest and watch this. Weak characters and a tired "killem off one at atime" theme. Sean Pertwee, what are you doing in rubbish like this? Itsa really cheap rip off of the mediocre Severance. If you likedSeverance you may like this too, good luck. 2/10. Why cant British filmmakers make decent films anymore. This has been likened to 28 dayslater and Dog soldiers. I agree, its continuing the theme of crap Brithorror films that could have been so much better.
