Quite an interesting movie!

I have got to say, this movie is a great example for "don't judge abook by its cover." Of course, in this case, it's "don't judge a movieby its cover". On the outside, this movie just looks like any randomteen girly drama/romance film. But, when you actually watch it, it'squite different. Some of the things I liked about Wild Child is thatthe actors and actresses really did a good job on this. Theydemonstrated perfectly the goal of acting--not to ACT LIKE yourcharacter, but to BE the character. Although in the beginning of thismovie, Poppy is not a kind of girl any parent would want their child tofollow, she becomes "better" when at Abbey Mount. This movie has manythemes, and among them are "true friends will always stand up for you,no matter what" (referring to the Honor Court scene)and "when stuck inany situation, make the best out of it, and it will go a long way."(referring to Poppy's overall journey throughout the year--at first shehates Abbey Mount, but then she gets to know everybody better anddoesn't think it's so bad. Then at the end, she actually is happy whenshe gets to stay.) But no movie is wholly enjoyable--in this case, withthe movie Wild Child, there are some things parents sometimes do notwant their child to see, like swear words. There are a few bad words(not a lot though) in this movie, and also some other material onlysuitable for older kids. Anyone who is interested in drama and romancemovies with a cheeky but touching story would LOVE the Wild Childmovie.

A Second Attempt, version 1.01

Wild. A second attempt at a user review. My first got deleted by IMDbafter someone posted a well thought out objection to it. If one has posted reviews here and found that some have been deleted bythe appropriate admin, how does one react? That is what this secondattempt is trying to consider. Most IMDb users will not have had theirstuff appreciated in that sort of way so this is a minority interestsort of comment. If one bothers to write comments or reviews about the features thatimpress one then one's personal appreciation can grow. Of course thereis a large range of individuals who browse such as IMDb user reviews sowho knows what sort of wording one will need to use if one is to trulyshow one's growing understanding of a feature such as this? My solutionwas to use a spoiler label. I obviously need to improve on that. * My first attempt had gotten up to version 2.01. It tried to show myfirst reaction, amazed and impressed and needing to write a review thatsaid so. It tried to include some of my understanding after a couple of weeks, this is one of those school stories where the star, Emma, and anotherare actually of the age that they are scripted at. Most others arestudent age, 18 to 22, but they fit in well, there is a natural look. Iwas also starting to tie in my reaction with links to Donnie Darko andPretty Woman. It tried to include some of the insights into the story detail that Istarted to notice after a few months. As such, drafting the firstversion of the comment was a big help to me gaining a deeper personalunderstanding of the story. Wild. Poppy is scrambled and sunk, but still flying high. A 'populargirl' as in Heathers and Mean Girls. This feature explores that in itsown sweet way and the true reality is not on the surface. Beneath thesurface is a mess so putrid that there might be admin deletions ifanyone dared to tried to seriously consider the relevance of thisfeature. I rate this as 10, which does not mean that I consider it tohave a sweet smell. Poppy as a blooee elle. I have appropriate skillsfor getting sunk on this. Wild. Poppy being totally unable to face the real issues re her dadhaving a need for a new partner. There is a barrier and I have oftencome across such barriers, there is something about it that is a hiddenpart of our world? Wild. The relationships between the Malibu trio, Poppy and sister andbest friend. It takes skill to find acceptable ways to comment? Theyare out of their depth and it shows. A big problem is that one is only likely to find out that there hasbeen a successful complaint by one of your items being deleted. Thereason why the deletion is not known. My only previous admin deletionwas something that I tried to write another review for and that endedup by being deleted too. I currently assume that was some politicalfactor. Example, if I write some dreamy appreciation about some dreamyactress such as 12 year old Abigail Breslin of Santa Clause 3 then I amlikely to get low scores for the helpfulness of my comment. The SarahJane Adventures as an example, ditto Ballet Shoes, maybe HSM Concert. Wild. My paranoia can make me wonder if this deletion was political, too. If so the issue might be me writing, several times at IMDb andAmazon USA, that I consider DVD region codes to be a USA invention toallow warfare against consumers world wide, a visible component in thecurrent world war III. My last dabble into that sort of thing was 2009,Amazon, concerning the disk sets for Emma Roberts' Unfabulous series. That must seem like paranoia to anyone but me? Not knowing the real reasons for the deletions does leave one in thedark.

This isn't a chick flick, it's a nobody flick

There's no doubt about it, Wild Child is not a film for the male populace. So far this year I've had a surprisingly rewarding experience with chick flicks, usually finding at least something positive to cling onto during the course of the feature, and at times even enjoying the movie as a whole. Yet today was not one of those days, as sadly enough, my male attributes got the better of me. With all of this said however, despite my obvious problem with connecting to any of the characters on the screen, I found it hard to believe that anyone could do so regardless of gender, age or anything else; Wild Child is formulaic, dumb, mawkish and irksome not just through it's naïve, inane plot but more importantly, through its -just as- banal characters. Devoid of any real likable personalities or interesting, original characterisation, director Nick Moore's feature length debut neither sustains any entertainment value nor offers any significant insight into the script's themes. Younger, female audiences will probably appreciate it a little better than me, but not by much.I don't know what's worse; watching lead character Poppy (Emma Roberts), a supposed rebellious Buddhist fashion queen of Malibu prance around for the first half of the movie playing the same "Eww! England is so dirty and medieval!" note, or seeing the British antagonised once again as stuffy, snobbish, dirty, monarchist morons that have never heard of an iPhone. Told in two polarising halves, the story here attempts to tell the tale of someone becoming a better person and coming of age by leaving behind their spoiled, bourgeois lifestyle behind for a much more disciplined and simpler life. Instead however, what Wild Child achieves is a sort of cartoon annoyance that's only real intent seems to be to rehash countless other similar stories whilst at the same time demoralising every act and line of dialogue that comes out of all the characters' mouths. It's transparent and utterly drab, never truly conveying the difference in cultures between the British and Americans with relevance or even comic effect; I wonder if you have ever seen Wife Swap? If so, it's a bit like that, only with more cheese at the end of the race. The first half of the movie with its black and white ethics and cultural insight tinged with humourless jokes and crass characterisation is thankfully the weaker half, but this still doesn't say much for the second. Following Poppy as she and her new friends attempt to get her expelled from the boarding school so that she can travel back home to Malibu, it's of no surprise that soon Poppy -through trying to escape- finds she doesn't want to leave. Not only is it predictable and without any original flavours whatsoever, but it's overlong and tiresome. The working in of a seedy antagonist set out to take revenge on Poppy for the sheer sake that she's always been the queen of the school and now Poppy looks to steal her thunder, is just as tedious and useless. In the end all these elements come together in the form of a ridiculous school court hearing, judging the fate of a certain character and at this point it's clear just how derivative and mawkish the whole affair is. Of course it all climaxes in a super happy ending for everyone but the evil antagonist that actually presumes you thought it was going to end up anywhere else, yet doesn't ever lead you to do so beforehand. This just about sums up the entire feature; it's anticlimactic, mundane and lazy with only slight glints of interest to be seen over the course of the superfluous runtime. One underused strength in particular is the relationship dynamic between Poppy and her father, yet sharing only a few scenes together, nothing much is achieved or capitalised on. Instead the film occupies most of its time making sure to throw in tired jokes about the differences in culture that presumably exists between America and Britian, which, if you've ever been to both countries, you'll know isn't as caricature as it is portrayed here. Of course, cultural stereotypes can be funny, but that's not the case here; it's hum-drum humour filtered through characters that you don't even want to laugh with. I suppose if I was to state one clear coherent aspect of the film, it would be Michael Price's score. Yet I hope you can see that with a movie such as this, when the music captures your attention more than anything else that is going on, you've got trouble. Lame, sappy and pretentious, it certainly won't help to see this if you're a guy, but even if you're not, I advise you give it a miss anyway; this isn't a chick flick, it's a nobody flick.

It may be manna for teen girls but any kind of critical eye will find it about as convincingly made as the last St Trinian's movie. It is played, though, with lively abandon.

Go Emma Roberts

This isn't what I would expect from Emma Roberts with the cussing andthe whole bad girl attitude but I must say it really worked for her andshe is no Amanda Bynes. I love how she is a bad and yet a good girl atthe same time and yes Emma has some moves to go with the new attitude.I'm not really into teen movies these days, because I feel that all ofthem seem to be the same. But not this one though it was edgy then mostteen movies. I even love the name she has in this movie and the crapshe does at the beginning is funny.I love how her sister is like oh nowyou have done it Poppy its so cute and she could really care less. This movie even has real message on how the environment you are raisedin and the people you surround yourself with plays a big part on whoyou are or who you can become. Also how one parent sometimes could usea little help, because if you have a spouse your kid doesn't like itcould cause a lot a problems when it comes to respect. Because Ms.Poppy didn't seem to have any.

Hilarious Fun

This review is from: Wild Child (DVD) I first rented this movie to see what it was all about and right after I watched it I knew that I had to own it. It is entertaining from the very first scene!

Shame on Iggy Pop for letting them (ab)use his anarchy-anthem 'Real Wild Child' in a girls'-own flick that is so paltry it makes the recent St Trinians addition look like Picnic At Hanging Rock.

Not Very Good At All

I went to watch this film expecting some girls that would be good towatch but instead of that it was the most predictably and basicstoryline i have ever seen. I would not recommend that you watch it. Ifyou are about 11 and a GIRL NOT A BOY then it might not be a bad filmto watch You may enjoy it. It is a very long film and if it is not yourtype of film then i would not recommend even thinking about going tosee it. I think, this may not be true, but i think it could possibly doyou harm going to watch it because of the amount of boring material inthe film. Can someone else please tell me if they agree or do not agreewith what i have put. Thanks.

So what's it gonna be? Evening or Wild Child?

Okay, this may sound a bit morbid, but either this or 'Evening' aredestined to become a classic. The last two films that Natasha Richardson completed, and in thecircumstances, one is bound to become a classic - I am personallyrouting for Evening. This is an OK film - not great - but okay, Roberts and Pettyfer trytheir hardest, but it's a fairly attractive script, but with a weakdirector helming it - the results are not as they should be.In comparison to the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, She's AllThat and Cruel Intentions which excelled in this sub-genre of TeenFlicks, this doesn't stand much of a chance - sorry!

A Yank in an English school ONE MORE TIME

Over the years there have been many films about a transplanted Americanin an English school. This time it is a teen aged spoiled girl sent to a posh English school.Emma Roberts, niece of Julia & daughter of Eric Roberts is an absolutedelight, she eventually will be as talented as her Aunt & Father. We have the usual craziness & silliness that we find in all suchcomedies. Then of course all is redeemed usually by some sporting event,This time its Lacrosse.Nick Moore directed first time screenplay writer Lucy Dahl'sserviceable script.Natasha Richardson in her final role is fine as the Headmistress & AlexPettyfer is good as her teen-aged son. Aiden Quinn is perfect as Emma'sfather. The entire cast is young & refreshing.Rating is a proper PG-13, This is primarily a teen type filmwith some raunchy teen talk. It is all in good fun.Ratings: *** (out of 4) 81 points(out of 100) IMDb 7 out of 10)

Light Hearted FUN

Come on folks, lighten up here.Yes... This isn't a deep and meaningful piece of classic cinema... Itis a fun "just sit back and have a good grin" film.I'm afraid that people who get on their high horse about films likethis must have gone to the wrong cinema! I am male, in my 40's, have adegree and run my own company... I watched this together with my twodaughters (14 and 16) and we all had great fun and a few really goodlaughs. So no... you don't have to be a 12 year old girl to findsomething fun in this film!It is predictable, cheesy and the plot is VERY shallow and weak in mostplaces... But you can't expect more from a film like this.So if you want to watch this, just turn off your high-brow film criticexistence, grab some popcorn and a fizzy drink and have a smile...

u'd enjoy it the best if u were in a boarding school

the movies showcases a typical British boarding school, with a lot ofminor details, very nicely written. I've been in British influencedboarding school here in India, this movie got me thinking of the goodo'l days. Worth watching once with the right spirits to at least gettill the middle of the movie, you'd start enjoying it from then. themovies showcases a typical British boarding school, with a lot of minordetails, very nicely written. Great Movie!

I saw this movie when I was in Britain last summer. Emma's character wasn't as wild as the title may suggest but there were a lot unexpected twists in this movie that made it more than your regular romcom. I highly recommend this movie and I will definitely buy this.

Mindless, pointless, low-intelligence 'chick-flick'

Anyone who gave this more than 5 out of 10 needs to rethink theirapproach to movies. So far from being 'the best movie EVER!!!', it'snot the worst but be prepared that you won't get any 'deepcharacterisation' here, rather hackneyed stereotypes and irritatingcharacters and an extremely predictable storyline. Of course, it'spointless really criticising this film as if you like movies aboutteenage girls and snobby as hell American bitches being 'transformed'into caring human beings, then you'll like it. If you like movies withdepth, characterisation, feeling, or good acting, then go see somethingelse. If you want a mindless, pointless flick that might possibly makeyou forget the dreadful state the world is in for a bit more than anhour, then I guess this is as good as any.

Victor Olliver 2012-04-30 02:42:52

The movie falls apart when it tries to explain why Poppy's been sent to this school. And the Spartacus moment at her school "trial" for misconduct is so cringe-worthy you want to die.

Boarding school brat

Due to her spoiled and selfish behavior,a California girrl is shipped to a strict boarding school in Britain by her father.Once there, the girrrl continues her bad streak and tries to get expelled to return home stateside. But the comraderie she feels with the homely yet helpful country girls is just what the doctor ordered. They spoon feed her thru her sorrows and selfishness as she heals. And she also learns her very own mother attended the school years before, that seals the deal. She wants to stay.In one scene, when a student council court tries to place blame on the girl, she gives a stirring story of having a hole in her heart for her departed mother and how she will try to do better. The movie ends on a happy note, but not before a prom and a winning lacrosse game spectacle. It was nice to see Miranda Richardson in the movie in the role of head mistress, tho a skiing mishap took her life shortly after the filming.Grade C for cheekySim--"Parent trap"

Good Fun

OK, so this film isn't going to win any Oscars but it does deliver.I saw this film this evening with friends (we're 18) and we had a goodlaugh and a good time watching it. Some of it#s content makes it quitea predictable teen movie but despite this the film is good fun and hassome surprise moments. For those expecting a tween film like What A Girl Wants this is not it!There's a lot of swearing, sexual reference and drinking which is morelike the kind of things normal 16 year olds do. This film has more ofan edge than your usual teen flick and will definitely appeal to awider range of ages. So give it a chance, it might surprise you.

LIGHTHEARTED TEEN FLICK THAT WORKS

This film is full of cheesy goodness. If you are looking for a young chick flick with with a dash of romance, this one is a great choice. This movie has been done before... A LOT. What sets this film apart is the stellar cast. It is the last movie made by Natasha Richardson and casting Alex Pettyfer as the love interest doesn't hurt. The lead is played by Emma Roberts (the daughter of actor Eric Roberts and Julia Robert's niece), who obviously has taken some pointers from family members. She shines in this role as a snotty rich kid who transforms into the young woman she was meant to be. She got caught up in the fast lane of California living after her mother passed and when her dad has had enough, she gets carted off to her mom's old boarding school - in England! There is an obvious clash of cultures as she has to find her way in a foreign school with it's own caste system. Enter the mean girls and a handsome son of a headmistress and there's your plot. You know how it ends but getting there is pure fun! We all know what is going to happen but isn't that half the reason we watch this kind of movie? As a viewer, you are not looking at this dvd as an option and thinking -- I want to watch award winning cinema! You know you are getting a lighthearted teen romp. You'll discover a young woman finding herself, real friends and love as she searches for meaning in her life. The belief that anyone can be transformed is a powerful message even if it is told in silly ways. So sit back, grab a bowl of popcorn with extra butter and enjoy a fun movie.
