White Squall is the true story of a ship school called the Albatross. The school is run by the captain, Christopher Skipper Sheldon and his wife, Dr. Alice Sheldon. In the of 1960, the couple took aboard eight teenage boys from around the country for eight months of learning how to sail, be a crew, and respect one another. the crew goes through hard times and more laid-back times, but they must come together when a freak storm gets them in trouble in the middle of the ocean.
Rarely have I heard such a terrible narrative. The story line is 'washedout' and the dialogue is utter rubbish; it's totally unbelievable. Icouldn't sit through the entire video in one setting it was so bad Iwatched another film in hope that something better might happen in thesecond setting: hardly likely. A total waste of time.
With masterpieces like Alien, Blade Runner and the underrated, but superb,1492: Conquest of Paradise, I am quite a big Ridley Scott fan. White Squallis something of a let down in comparison, but it certainly deserved morethan a measly $10 million US gross at the box office. As you would expectfrom a Scott film it boasts his trademark lavish production quality andstunning photography. The sequences at sea at some of the most spectacularever filmed as Scott revels in the rolling waves and lurching ship, conveythe ferociousness at sea, even in fairly calm conditions like no other filmI can recall. The story however is less successful and is essentially (andunusually unoriginal for a Scott movie) a Dead Poets' Society at sea, as amotley crew of young boys, played by a talented and convincing setyoungsters, do a lot of growing during the course of the voyage under thewatchful eye of an Ahab-esque but eventually sympathetic Jeff Bridges. Thefinal scene most definitely resembles that of Dead Poets' Society. (Captain. My Captain). However the film as a whole never bores and makes forcompulsive viewing at times particularly the superb storm of the title, thatis both moving as well technical tour de force.
This is Ridley Scott's unwanted great film. Around the time this wasreleased it was not long after when GI Jane was made which was just the kindof film you have at the bottom of your shoe where White Squall was a verymeaningful film and was Dead Poet's Society at sea. A lot of unknownactors had a big part to play in White Squall. You had Scott Wolf, RyanPhilippe and also Baltazar Getty who was well known anyway but this added tohis list of very good films. Jeff Bridges was not miss cast in theslightest as is Jon Savage. Young men with problems in their own family life are all sent on aneducational trip around the world in the aim they try and work together as ateam but more important as sailors at sea. They bond, each main teencharacter has a problem in their life whether it be frank who can't stand tobe around his father, Chuck who doesn't know who he is, Dean who can't reador write and Gil who cannot let the death of his brother escape his past. Jeff Bridges is the ships captain who shows no weakness to his boys. Heplays the hard ass very well and sometimes becomes quite irritating by doingso. Ridley Scott likes to make epics whether they be in Space, in theFuture this is his sea epic apart from 1492 of course but he does it withsuch elegance and grace and manages to create a bittersweet and tragic taleof friendship and coming together as a team. The sinking of the ship is very well choreographed and missed out on Oscarsfor Jeff Bridges who I can fairly say have never seen a bad film of his. One film that is not brought up when talking of Ridley Scott butshould.
The movie is exciting and draws you into the true story drama. If one is so inclined to be analytical, the movie is inspiration to bold, not passive living and just to enjoy life: Below are some examples:"Behold, the power of the wind""You can't run from wind, you trim your sails, face the wind, and keep going"I finally undertand Homer "The Journey is the thing."There are many more. I am interested in reading the book now too. Jeff Bridges is perfect as Sheldon. It's worth watching. [[ASIN:B00000IQC2 White Squall]]
WOW.....its a ten year old film, and the frist time i ever saw the end,im 15, and stone cold, but the end when he gets up and tells the kid on the stand to stop right there brought a tears to my eyes.
I thought this movie was pretty good. I don't think I would have been as brave as those boy's. I would recomend this movie for someone to watch.
Just watched this movie again for the 4th time.I enjoy it each time I see it. I think it shows what friendship can do and how young men can grow up fast when they need to. It was amazing how these boys changed in the year they were at sea.
I really like this film, first the story was interesting, characters weresome what interesting, very emotional at times and the theme I just loved. It just makes you feel for the characters. It also is just one of thosemovies that makes you feel good at the end, with high drama court scene.Ridley Scott, proves that a is one of the best directors out there. Hejustis very strong and unique visually. However on the down side I think, therewhere just a few boring scenes that needed to be removed or edited, becausesome time I felt like I was waiting for something to happen.
This review is from: White Squall (DVD) Very nice movie..great visuals and great drama. It makes me want to go sailing everytime I see it. I cant wait till it comes out on BLU ray. Guys its work the money.
I quite agree that it is a Dead Poets Society set at sea. It is a mistaketoclassify it as an Action Movie. It's about building trust and groupreliancewith some action scenes. The development of mutual respect between theboysis quite believable The acting is excellent in all cases. As a JeffBridgesfan, I was surprised I'd never heard of it before it appeared on latenightTV. The last looks exchanged between the captain and his wife are aboutasgood as they get. Not a really great movie but I found it well worthwhileasa non-fan of action movies.
I think this movie sucked for a simple reason! Ryan Phillippe (Gil Martin) was left behind in the ship and he was killed. I think the best thing about the video was Scott Wolff and Ryan Phillippe with their shirts off, and just them in the movie period!!!!
This review is from: White Squall (Amazon Instant Video) My daughter watched it for school requirement but after only a few minutes I could tell why. Good movie. From the heart.
The film is entertaining, and the White squall part is excellent. However, the film is slow in spots, and drags it down from a 7. Jeff Bridges is agood actor, and I like him in this film. The end the film is a bit of adowner, but where would the interest be if no tragedy occurred. Worthwatching on TV.6 or 7 out of 10.
White Squall is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The bell'sinscription, "Where we go one, we go all!" ties the whole movietogether. It is a tragic story because of the deaths of all the crewmembers. But the group that began as a bunch of individuals unsure ofwhy they were there became a tight knit crew that stood united insupport of their captain and their fellow crew members.Chuck Gieg said, "I finally understand Homer, 'The journey's thething.'" We are not in control of the tragedies that befall us. Thecaptain had to learn this lesson the hard way. But through the journey,he learned that he had others to lean on - the crew he trained.
This movie is emotional, thrilling, action packed, and even funny. Thewholeentire cast does a fantastic job and the special effects and scenery justhad my eyes glued to the screen.Almost as good as Titanic! This movie is just plain Wonderful!
I personally saw this movie a few years ago. As with everything some people will like it others will not.I thought it was pretty good myself. I thought the characters where great also the scenery was very beautiful.
This film was, in my opinion, robbed at the box office. It had a greatcast,a great script with great characters. Heck, everything about this moviewas...(dare I say it again) great. Seriously though, I quite enjoyed thisfilm, I saw a little bit of myself in each of the boys, and felt myselfliking each one of them for their differences. This film is based on atruestory, which makes it a little bit hard to watch at times (I had some realissues with the dolphin scene, I couldn't stop crying), but it also makesthe story more poignant. And it was good to see names like Scott Wolf,RyanPhillipe & Jeremy Sisto in a movie before they became more "Hollywood". Itshows that they do have talent, and didn't just make it cause they'repretty... 8/10.
This could have been a very good movie. "To Sir with Love" meets adisaster movie! :-) But something with the timing and pacing is notright. The movie is too long - or rather: it has not got enough actionto fill up more than two hours. Someone should have tightened it up.Also, I cannot really decide if I like the Captain or not. He was quiteirresponsible and sometimes too hard. As when he forced the boy who wasafraid of heights to climb the mast in front of all the other boys, andwhen he expelled a boy "only" for using a harpoon on a dolphin. Itwould have been funnier if one could have admired the Captainwhole-heartedly! I do not think that the boys developed enough either -and that is the "point" with this kind of super teacher-versus-wildkids movie. At least you were not allowed to see enough of thisdevelopment, or the result of it.Another problem was that several of the boys looked a lot alike so thatit was difficult to keep them apart. (Or maybe it is a sign of mygetting old, that I think that all young people look the same! :-) ) Ialso think it would have been enough if only two or three of the boyshad been presented in detail, with their respective characters, backgrounds, personal problems, and development. The rest of them couldall have been small bit parts, "foil". Now there was too much toremember about them, and trying to keep them apart, in just a featurefilm. If it had been a long TV series it would have been different -then you would have had time to take it all in.Still, this movie is quite good enough to watch at home with your olderchildren/teenagers on a rainy day!
Yeah, this is 'Dead Poets' on water (as I think 1000 other reviewers havecommented). What difference does it make? They're both Disney movies andDisney is known for re-using the same idiotic themes. So let's get to theinteresting stuff.Scott catches on trends quite often and then supersedes them with his own. Think of it, we go from the 'Jaws' ripoff to the 'Alien' clone. 'Legend'came in the 80s fantasy craze. '1492' was a historical cash-in. Now he'sspawned the epic-craze of which he is still master (Petersen will neverimprove). So it's interesting to see this as one of his less derivative works. Unlike'Blade Runner', this hasn't acquired as successful of a following and it'skind of obvious. Most likely it's because Scott was experimenting hereunlike 'Blade' and it didn't work too well.Anyway, we do get some interesting pieces. The titles are absolutelysuperb. The views of the ship are enthralling. Heck, even the beauty ofthe dolphins is made almost angelic. Too bad the whole "stupid bullycliche" had to barge in.Final Analysis = = Midrange Material
Lots of character development - action.Story was very cool but we are sailors, so any sailing movie is great.Jeff Bridges was OK as captain, but they could have chosen a better lead.
