You have an exquisite mouth, you know...

What is it about this movie that makes it so attractive (and a cult item in its own right, as you can see from the other reviews)? Could it be the gorgeous photography, or its beautiful music score?Can it be that the movie DEFINES impossible (or, at least, unlikely) love between two totally different women?Or, that it is one of the most tender stories ever filmed?Well, for me, what makes it one of my favorite films is all of the above, plus the performance by Canadian actress Rachael Crawford (who plays Petra). She is amazing. Her character is honest, self-assured, direct and sweet. She is the main reason I see this movie again and again. I don't know if I want to be like her (I am a guy, so that's impossible) or meet someone like her.For the moment, I will try to catch all the video material out there by Ms. Crawford (Rude, for example). She also has done a lot of work for TV.And back to WNIF, I know it's difficult to get, but by all means try to see it. It is a great movie.

The best lesbian movie

I´d like to thank P. Rozema for making such a beautiful movie. I can´ttellyou how many times I´ve seen it, but it moves me every time. It´s my Nr.1!

By far better than chocolate !

When Night is Falling is the most exotic love story I've ever watched.What I admire most is the idea of putting together two women of verydifferent patterns and create a romantic masterpiece: Camille Baker, astrict but sensitive university professor who teaches at a religiouscollege and Petra, a charming circus performer.I reckon Camille Baker and Petra's encounter resembles a child's firstvisit to the circus. All those colored and glittering lights, theclowns who make him burst into laughter, the most risky numbers makehim feel odd but happy. For Camille Baker, visiting the circus is entering the tunnel of love.Instead of thousands of lights, she sees only one and she's afraid ofreaching it, instead of risky numbers she is dealing with love andhopelessly tries to deny it. She is no longer Camille Baker, theconservative figure, but plainly Camille. They are just two women,Camille and Petra, an expression of pure love.WNIF is an emotional and haunting film which also gives a fascinating ainsight on circus life. I express my admiration towards Rachel Crawfordwho portrayed an intelligent, deadly feminine and independent woman whodidn't give up her pursuit of happiness.There is a chemistry between Camille and Petra which is kind of rare.They are both beautiful women with loads of sex-appeal, but they'rebeautiful in different ways: Camille is the sober type, betraying herchained passion by a pair of "exquisite lips" and Petra is the exoticbeauty, like a panther in captivity which is left into the wild. Alongwith her appearance, she put Camille's boyfriend (Martin) into shadowand straight away, he becomes Camille's cat's paw in her process ofdenying her feelings for Petra. I give this movie 10/10 because it didn't come out as a lesbian movie,but as a gorgeous love story.

Printed on my mind

This is one of these movies that will remain with you. The story is great, about a Methodist professor which inadvertently falls in love with a circus girl (kind of like cirque de soleil). The story is believable, the actresses are very cute and have great spark, but also the cinematography is exceptional. Some of the images on this film will be printed for years to come on your mind.

I love this film. It's up there with my favourites. It has an air of mystery and sensuality that it pulls off very well. I loved the storyline, the Sirkus of Sorts, the funny quotes added in. A favourite "romantic/lovestory" movie.

A Classic Love Story

This review is from: When Night Is Falling (DVD) This in one of those Movies that you can watch over and over. I became a instant fan of Pascale Bussieres. I rerented it 3 times in 1995."When Night is Falling" is a Classic Love Story regardless of Sexual Orientation. Ms Bussieres is A really fine Actress. I saw this film years ago and bought the VHS from Amazon. Hopefully it will be rereleased on DVD. I have recently viewed her performance in "Blue Butterfly".She has retained both her beauth and her talents. I wish her continued success with her career.

Get the DVD if you want to see this movie

It's a romance. Very sweet. The love scenes and kissing scenes alone would be worth seeing, I believe, by most lesbians or anyone interested in very steamy woman to woman affection. The DVD shows more detail than the VHS does. The entire movie is very artsy in nature and the circus scenes are really fantastic, particularly the two female trapeze artists.

The most romantic story of two women falling in love!

This movie was very well written and produced. It captures the essence of a budding romance between two women who fall in love with each other. It is touching and honest. I loved it!

definitely one of the best lesbian films ever made

Superb performances from the two leading actresses, Pascale Bussieres and Rachel Crawford. Though I thought the idea of a straight, almost getting married woman and a professor of theology at that would fall in love with another woman is likely impossible to happen, but I guess this just proves that... people do fall in love with the person regardless of their sexes. I've actually just seen this movie twice, and now have decided to buy it. I highly recommend this movie for all the women out there who loves women. This movie is so inspiring that it made me feel like falling in love again. (corny, lol).

a gorgeous, sensual delight

A gorgeous, sensual delight. This is one of the most beautiful movies ihaveever seen. It is hard to come by honest romantic lesbian movies andcatchingthis one on TV was certainly one of the highlights in the past years.The movie managed to provoke many emotions in me, from joy, to anger,todeep sorrow and everything in between. It got me started to look intotheCanadian movie scene more, especially on this type of topic, as thereareexcellent examples out there, this being a prime one.Since accidentally buying this film a week ago, I've been watching italmosteveryday. It is a very moving piece, incredibly romantic andbeautifully shot. I have no expertise on movie direction but all creditgoes to Patricia for hercreativity. Apart from being incredibly gorgeous, the leading ladiesgave a very moving performance, which intern moved me.

comparison of differant releases

This review is from: When Night Is Falling (DVD) This new release has extras the other releases don't. They are a behind the scenes footage and a short film. However, this release is not digitally remastered and not made from a clean print. My advice is to rent this through netfix to watch the extras, but purchase one of the remastered, no frills, versions to keep in your collection.

I watched this film not knowing what to expect and came out moved. It is a modern day fairytale. And, like all good fairytale's, it has romance, beauty and a difficult choice.

Brilliant direction and superb acting

This film in my view is the best coming-out story that I've seen portrayed, since Desert Hearts. This viewer can take the role of any of the major characters and empathize. The actresses were convincing as lesbians.The pain Martin felt personally and to his ego I felt, but all's fair in love. The issues and decisions that both Carmille and Petra had to make were realistically and tenderly portrayed. For example, Carmille's decision to follow her desire and heart or her decision to leave her okay life for a prospect shows a great deal of courage and spontaneity. Martin, I'm sure is a proponent of a bird in the hand philosophy.And Petra's pursuit of Carmille was laudable for an individual who seemed so carefree to dare confront a woman so emerged in religion; a woman, who already has a man (What a dyke!). The symbolism between christianity vs. circus life appeared a bit satanic for my taste; but it didn't distract from the movie. Instead it added to Carmille's journey of self-discovery from one end of the pendulum to the other. Both women were beautiful and sensual as disparate from sexy and provocative and as a woman I can appreciate that. Both women were able to make their respective characters come alive realistically.I've watched this movie several times and there is no end in site. I'm a fan and looking for more from Patricia Rozema. Watching this moving more than once I can appreciate the time, effort, talent, detail and affection that she put into each character and each scene. She did a great job. This is a good movie.

Wow

This is such a great film. It probably has the most erotic scene filmed. Just love it. the story of the girl who ran away from the circus. Seriously Pascale Bussieres plays a convincing woman who is questioning where she is going in life, and this film has such similarities with situations we find ourselves in. Rent it

Touching Love Story

I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish. I enjoyed watching as you could tell that Camille was falling in love with Petra. Camille finally let go of all her religious beliefs and went for it. Finding love in the end.

Incredible film about love, courage, sensuality, beauty, art

A wonderful film involving two beautiful women who find out about themselves through each other. The visual texture is wondrous, the story moving and sweet, the moral dilemmas gripping. I loved this film! and so did my husband... I wish I could have seen it on the big screen...

One of the Best Lesbian Films

I am a Lesbian. I have seen plenty of lesbian movies. And When Night is Falling is one of my favorites. I only wish they would put it on DVD. Hopefully before I wear out my copy on VHS.

A Great Fine Art Film

I am so glad that Criterion picked up this film. The DVD came out late, well after the initial release of the video had disappeared. Recent showings on the LOGO network have rekindled some well deserved interest.Most Lesbian films are just plain bad. With the rare exception of a film like Desert Hearts, they are mindless romps by undeveloped, self-absorbed characters. They always end in the bedroom, usually to a lush musical score, because the plot literally can't go anywhere else. This film is not only a good lesbian film but a beautiful, artistically rendered chronical of a quirky relationship between two very eccentric people. The cinematography alone makes it so visually compeling that you could watch it just for that. It has a fine rhythmic pacing and a color saturation reminiscent of David Lynch. The color filled Art Circus atmosphere that surrounds one character pops as it is interspered with the staid beiges and browns that paint the academic world of the other. One scene that intercuts a car headlight dancing across a bedroom wall, a circus act that uses bouncing lights behind a screen and one of the female leads making love to her boyfriend turns editing into an artform. Well worth the price!
