An ambitious young New Yorker (Kristen Bell), disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of those who threw them in a sausage magnate (Danny DeVito), a street magician (John Heder), an adoring painter (Will Arnet) and a self-admiring model (Dax Shepard). But when a charming reporter (Josh Duhamel) pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

We have taken some photos of "When in Rome (HD)". They represent actual movie quality.
I saw this movie 3 months ago. it was so bad i can't get it out of myhead. i am hoping to excise the demons by venting here. I can honestlysay that it is one of the two worst movies I have EVER seen in my life, along with The Tailor of Panama. Skip this movie. It is difficult to know where to start. I do not have a problem withmovie premises that ask you to suspend disbelief so as to make a basictenant of the story line work. But i have a huge problem with beingasked to suspend disbelief because the writers are too lazy to come upwith plausible plot machinations. this movie does both. The acting is incredible inept. I was particularly put off by WillArnett's turn as an improbably poorly cast Italian. Though DaxSheppard, Jon Heder and Danny divito were equally poor choices whophoned in their performances. Editing was poor as it was at timesdifficult to know where the action was taking place, not that I cared. The "jokes" were not funny. The chemistry in this "romantic comedy"between the two leads was unbelievable. Actually not existent. just allaround terrible...
This film is about a career oriented woman who accidentally castsspells on guys when she was in her sister's wedding in Rome."When in Rome" has an interesting idea. I can see the story beingfunny, but something just does not work well. Maybe it is because thereis not enough cheesy moments, or maybe there is a lack of chemistrybetween the two leads, or maybe there is little witty moments to make"When in Rome" memorable. There is little to make you feel for thecharacters and look forward to what happens to them next."When in Rome" is mildly funny, but it is quite a forgettable romanticcomedy.
I've wanted to see this film since I watched the preview, and it didnot disappoint. I laughed so hard throughout. I loved the characters.Kristin Bell as a young woman who wants love, but has given up on itand focused on her career instead. Then along comes this awesome guywho seems too good to be true, and probably is. The four men werehilarious and I adored the best friend of Nick. It was nice to relaxand watch a film that focuses on the problems and difficulties of loveunrequited. Plus, even Rome was beautiful and made me actually want tovisit. If you're in the mood for a laugh and some sighs, I recommendthis film.
As I have admitted in other reviews, chick flicks are hardly my cup of tea, and as usual get suckered into watching them by women in my life, in this case my girlfriend. While channel surfing last night we come upon this little ditty just as it's starting (yeah for me...) and I get the proverbial, "we always watch what you want to watch, can we watch this???" Now normally, being an avid reader, I would just go in the bedroom and read, but she gets insulted when I do that since she sits through "my movies." So, against my better judgment I relented, and let's just say, it ended up working in my favor, but more about that in a minute...Words escape me trying to describe how bad this movie is. If I painted you a visual picture, of someone taking an ice pick and repeatedly jabbing it in their eye sockets leaving nothing but bloody holes, I'm not sure if that would even convey my hatred of this movie. How do movies like this get made, do they think so little of women in Hollywood that they will eat up garbage like this without question (I'll leave that for the female readers of my review to answer)? This movie wasn't cute, it wasn't funny, it wasn't romantic, it wasn't well acted, it wasn't well written, and it certainly wasn't well directed. This movie has not a single redeeming feature. The two leads have zero chemistry, and I can't recall seeing either of them in anything other than this dreck, which is probably just as well since neither of them were memorable in the least. The other actors were equally as forgettable, but I was astonished to see Danny Devito slumming in this thing. "Danny, did you owe the director/producer a huge favor, was someone involved in the making of this waste of celluloid a family member, why, why, would an actor of your stature and accomplishments lend your name and time to this disaster?"Really, I hated this movie so much, I don't feel like discussing the plot, or specifics as that would bring back painful memories. It wasn't even enough the movie was horrible, as the "actors" continued to embarrass themselves when the credits started rolling with a ridiculous dance number. The lead actress started doing the cabbage patch which was completely out of place to the music playing. Hey, if you're going to embarrass yourself why not go all the way, right?! Even my girlfriend hated this thing, and that brings me around to the bit about watching this film working in my favor, yeah, she owes me, big! I have not yet thought up a suitable enough reward, but I'm open to any and all suggestions, so send them my way.
This review is from: When In Rome (DVD) I purchased this movie to watch over the weekend with a few close friends. It's a movie that doesn't require a lot of thinking. It's entertaining and a cute movie. Worth watching if you like cute and funny.
Believe it or not I went to see this movie not knowing who was in it ornot even seeing a trailer. I just wanted to be entertained after havinga hell of a bad year or even bad decade. The movie delivered. Basically a madcap romantic comedy that moved fromone funny scene to the next with wonderful actors in the cast.Sure you could say that you have seen this idea or that idea beforesomewhere else, but all together? I laughed and came home and told myhusband that I had really enjoyed the movie and it was more than achick flick. I highly recommend this movie and it does deliverwonderful well acted entertainment.Only pay any attention to the harsh reviews if you, yourself, are acritical movie reviewer that has a jaded outlook on life.
You can do a lot of sight-seeing in Rome. There is so much history tothe place that a few days ' visit does not do the city justice. Andyet, just a few moments and you'll get to absorb the scenery already. In "When In Rome," it even just takes 48-hour stay to get to awonderful (and this case, magical) site: a fountain which grants wishesof the heart. And because of this, the lives of boy and girl just getcrazy.Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel are not really big names when it comes toromantic comedies, but they manage to pull this one off. The two ofthem had great chemistry throughout the movie. Together with asupporting cast who are experts on being hilarious (Jon Heder, WillArnett, etc.), they made their characters entertaining and fun towatch.Nothing is really extraordinary about the plot though. There are storyelements which we have seen before (a successful career woman who isunlucky with love, a supernatural event happens suddenly to disrupt hercurrent situation). For me, it is not that unique, but it does thetrick in keeping us interested by showing us just how far the spelledguys would go in order to grab Beth's attention."When In Rome" is definitely not a must-watch for everyone. Although ithas its flaws, it does what a romantic comedy is supposed to do: makepeople believe in love and laugh at the same time, a straight-arrow,feel-good movie with a fairytale ending.Line that Stuck: "You smell like lavender... You smell like livestock."
Basically about a woman so frustrated with love that she decides tosteal coins from a fountain causing men to fall for her. WHEN IN ROMEÂ I am SO disappointed in you! I thought you'd be funny, full ofwise-cracks and intrigue but nay, you're just on crack.Real characters wouldn't be half as absurd & nonsensical as many ofyours, and well, your story needs polishing. It's sad that the onlytime I laughed was while watching your trailer months ago.True, sometimes your music was good, but you, as a movie, are not.Don't waste your time on this!
Sometimes I ignore the critics reviews with lighter genres. This time they were right on one hand, but far too kind in their grading. This movie stunk. Interestingly part of the movie centers on the main character arranging for an art exhibit on pain at the Guggenheim. Actually all they needed to do was turn the camera on the audience to really experience what pain feels like! I spent most of the movie feeling guilty I didn't stay home and walk my dog! Surprised that Angelica Huston, such a seasoned actress succumbed to such low. SAVE YOUR MONEY!
When in RomeWhen-a in-a Rome-a it's-a important-a that-a you-a add-a letter-a "a"to-a the-a end-a every-a word-a, so-a they-a can-a understand-a you-a.Fortunately, the career minded New York City woman in this romanticcomedy doesn't have time to talk to the locales on her trip to Italy, because she's too busy flirting with a fellow Yank she met at hersister's wedding. When recently dumped Beth (Kristen Bell) agrees to be her sister's maidof honour she becomes smitten with the best man, Nick (Josh Duhamel). But when he turns out to be a big jerk, she steals coins from theFountain of Love in an act of defiance. Unfortunately, when she returnsStateside she's suddenly hounded by the owners of the stolen coins(Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, Danny DeVito) who are allmysteriously infatuated by her. Now, she must return the coins to theowners before she's suffocated by their love.A slapdash, slapstick, schlock-fest, When in Rome fails to attaineither romance or comedy: the patchwork storyline is discombobulating, while the jokes are ham-fisted and trite. Besides, when in Rome the only thing you should be stealing out of thepublic fountains are those priceless ancient Roman statues. (Red Light)
Kristen Bell is cute and charming. Though I never saw Veronica Mars, Ihave liked her in all of her films. But I haven't exactly liked all ofher films. I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Serious moonlight. Butdidn't like Couple's retreat or her most recent, When in Rome. When in Rome isn't that bad. Not as bad as everyone made it seem or asI expected. But like most rom-coms, it is drowned in clichés, it is waytoo predictable, and unconvincing. It's shame, cause Bell is solikable. But the film fails. Not like you'd expect it to though.Bell plays a single business woman who goes to Rome for her sister'swedding. While there she meets a guy(played by the unlikable JoshDuhamel). When there she pulls out four coins from a famous fountainand there is some silly thing involving four guys(played ridiculouslyby Danny Devito,Will Arnet,Jon Heder) and blah blah blahtypical, typical, typical, yawn yawn yawn. When in Rome is better than some of the other crap handed to us, suchas The Ugly truth, Valentine's day, All about Steve, etc. But it isn'tfar off. Why can't a rom-com be as freshly funny and charming as TheProposal or (500) days of Summer? Why?!The Proposal worked do to the charm of Ryan Reynolds and SandraBullock. If this film works at all, it's do to the charm of KristenBell. I also at least laughed a little, unlike the above mentioned asbad. I laughed a little. But this movie just doesn't work. It's not theworst film of the year, it's not the best, it's not the best romanticcomedy, it's not the worst. I can't recommend it. I say skip it. Butit's not that bad. When in Rome: C+
Seriously, this would have been a average 6 if I had missed the dancesat the end credits. It was a corny chick flick before the end credits, but it turned into a silly teen chick flick when the dances began.Story is average. Do not expect something new, or unique. The localescould have easily been forged in a sound stage in Hollywood. The actingwas average at best, even for the great Danny DeVito and AngelicaHouston.Overall, it should have taken more time developing the story. I havebecome so sick of Hollywood pushing insta-love to the new generationsof women and men. How often in real life does instant love end well?
This is so bad. If i were involved with this movie I would be ashamedof myself. Nothing about it is funny or cute and it seems to takeforever to finish. It has a good cast in it but they are all wasted. Ittells the story of a woman who's dedicated to her job as a curator andis trying to impress her boss with an art exhibit she is planning. Whenher sister gets married in Rome, she becomes drunk and takes out 5coins out of a fountain that people throw in to find love. As a resultof taking those coins, all of those men fall in love with her and allhappen to live in New York city. Throughout the movie the people whothink there in love with her try to woo her with unfunny results. Eventhe twist about the guy she likes wasn't clever and could definitelysee it coming. Do not waste your time with this movie. It is hands downthe worst movie of the year and don't' see anything taking that titleaway from it and it's on January

I thought the movie was going to be another generic chick flick. However I was pleasantly surprised that it was more then that, it was agreat comedy. Although it did have a few gushy moments overall themovie was a blast. It was really funny, and kept me laughing allthroughout with many comic scenes. The chemistry of the actors was wonderful too, they all worked verywell together, as if they were meant to be.The people in theater seemed to enjoy the movie too, there were lots ofclapping and laughter.Overall between the jokes, great actors, and a funny plot line, its agreat movie and not just for the girls.
I honestly can not believe that this movie has such bad reviews.Thevery thing I love about When in Rome is that it's not sappy andpathetic that you want to poke your eyeball and say Oh come on...forcrying out loud.I don't like stories that are so sugary and cheesy thatyou want to vomit. This is above all funny and relaxing movie.I watchedit many times and it still makes me laugh.Off course it's not perfectbut it definitely deserves watching more than one time.If you want tospend relaxing evening watching movie that isfunny, entertaining, relaxing you won't make mistake if you watch When inRome.Josh Duhamel and Kristen Bell did a good job.
I saw this Movie when it was in theater and loved it. I was in bad mood going in and when i walked out i was much better. Josh Duhamel plays a reporter and Kristen Bell plays Beth who is a Curator in New York. Beth has to go to Rome, Italy for her sister's wedding and she is feeling down. Beth is unlucky in the love area and after the wedding she goes to the Fontana de Amore and picks up coins from it. Now there is a saying that who ever picks up a coin from the fountain will fall in love with the one who threw it in. So Beth picks up five of them. Josh Duhamel is one of the guys from the wedding and is attacted to beth. Now after Beth gets back from Rome strange thinks start happening and that is when things star to get intresting for beth....
This review is from: When In Rome (DVD) This is a sad waste of two very charming and talented actors. It was mildly amusing in spots, but on the whole, I found it disappointing. Of course the setting was beautiful, but it was less than memorable or I might have more to say.
Really. The cast is great, but not in this. Angelica Houston, DannyDevito, Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel... it should have been at the veryleast OK. But it was SO bad. Painfully so. Embarrassingly so. I loveromantic comedies. I watch them almost religiously. I watch almostevery release that can claim, even loosely, to be a romantic comedy. Ilove the silly banter and the eye rolling, I love the predictability -I was very disappointed that Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn'scharacters didn't get together at the end of the Break- Up. I feltcheated. But this film had NO magic, NO chemistry, NOTHING butcringe-worthy slapstick and oh... painful... embarrassing for allinvolved.Avoid at all costs, or watch it, to understand how bad it is.
Had attractive leads, talented leads with comedic timing, a decentstoryline...but what a total flameout. I could deal with thesupernatural aspect of it w/no problems bc people apparently do dropmoney in that fountain. Made for an interesting angle. The whole movietook place in less than a week, so from a plausibility standpoint, Idon't get why characters have to fall in love so fast. From what Icould tell, they had one date, unless you count the reception in Romeand not too many conversations that weren't interrupted. It's just hardto buy. Especially these days. I give movies from the past like My ManGodfrey or the Fred/Ginger movies a pass, but in the 2000s, it's notenough. I don't even necessarily need to see it on screen, it justwould be nice to know that time had passed. Maybe change seasons orflash a "6 months" later. And the fact that ((((SPOILER ALERT)))) hewasn't even under the curse makes less believable. On top of that, there was a wedding! Anyway, like I mentioned, the potential was there.Kristin and Josh had great chemistry. I thought there were too manyextra characters. For example, Nick's friend who really served nopurpose. Same for Beth's assistant. The slapstick was OK and not toomuch to bear. Dax Shepherd's (?) character was annoying. I didn't evenrecognize Napoleon D at first. Danny DeVito always makes me chuckle. It could have been a good one. It wasn't all bad, but there weredefinitely more cringe-worthy moments than desired. The thing is, Ireally have nothing against the predictability of RomComs. In fact, Iwatch them because they're feel-good movies. But this was not awell-done one.
