Little known yet engaging Anti-war film

A friend and I watched this movie back-to-back with the Italian flick"The Inglorious Bastards", as a part of our 'crazed rampaging soldiers'theme-night and it was a terrific ride throughout the two whole movies. The Italian cult classic one, directed by Enzo G. Castellari andstarring Fred Williamson, is undoubtedly more outrageous andspectacular, but the main conclusion actually was that both films sharepractically the same plot; only seen from the two opposite war fronts.Obviously both productions are imitations of the legendary war film"The Dirty Dozen", but personally I always treasured a bigger weaknessfor cheap knockoffs than for the acclaimed originals. "The MisfitBrigade" is adapted from a novel from Sven Hassle; who was a formerNazi Soldier and thus a bit of a questionable and slightlycontroversial figure himself. Regardless of his background, "The MisfitBrigade" definitely isn't pro-Nazi and actually quite blunt anduncompromising in the expression of its political opinions. Theprotagonists in this movie are anti everything and that's probably whythis is such a good and plausible film. And by plausible I do notnecessarily mean the depicted events in the film, but thecharacterizations of the rejected SS-soldiers and deserters. The plotintroduces the questionable members of the 27th Panzer Regiment; agathering of overly opinionated soldiers convicted in court martial anddownright expandable criminals. They spent their days driving around intheir tank, drinking heavily and playing vicious pranks on each other.Mostly active near the Northern front lines and Russians borders, the27th Regiment unmercifully kills Russians but drive their tank overGerman soldiers just as easily. When the vicious Colonel Von Weisshägenpromises them amnesty in return the fulfillment of a special anddangerous assignment, the boys go far beyond Russian enemy lines inorder to blow up a train chock-full of oil and military equipment. Asmuch as it is a harsh and realistic war epic, "The Misfit Brigade" isalso a subtle and blackly humorous parody about the people forced tofight for a cause that is not necessarily their own and, as you canguess, their number is far more plentiful than the heroic patriots. Some sequences are near-brilliant and overwhelming (like the tankfights, the screening of the discouraging propaganda film, and theencounter with the exhibitionist deserters), but other footage isdreadfully tedious and misplaced, like the scene in the brothel forexample. The best element about "The Misfit Brigade" is unarguably thecharacter drawings. The members of the 27th Panzer Regiment aren'tfriends or soul mates. They're cold and emotionless bastards that donot mourn when one of their colleagues is killed in action and theydefinitely don't philosophize about the senselessness of warfare. TheYugoslavian filming locations add a great deal of realism to the filmand the scenery (those tanks and Luftwaffe attacks!) are excellent.Director Gordon Hessler – known from the early 70's Vincent Pricehorror movies "The Oblong Box" and "Cry of the Banshee" – does anadmirable job as well and he could rely on a fantastically devotedcast, including Bruce Davison as the uncrowned leader of the bunch,David Patrick Kelly as the eloquent and provocative Legionnaire and JayO. Sanders as the big & dumb kamikaze freak Tiny. David Carradine issublimely nefarious as the power-hungry Colonel Von Weisshägen;complete with his glasses for one eye only to make him look extra evil.Oliver Reed receives top billing but only makes a cameo appearanceduring the hectic and extremely cool climax. The role, however, isperfect for him and he gives his absolute everything in only five linesof dialog. Recommended!

Bad attempt

If you fell in love with the books of Sven Hassle, you might think thisis a movie not to miss. Sorry, have to bring your hopes down. The movie doesn't catch anything from the books! The characters arenothing like in the books. Can it be so that they couldn't find anyactors to resemble the characters in the books or was the directing soterrible? I don't know but I was SO disappointed after seeing thismovie that I was sorry I bought it.As far as I'm concerned, this movie shouldn't have been done, at leastnot in the 80's! They probably had a very small budget which may be thereason for the terrible style of the movie and the story, that doesn'tremind me of the exciting and cruel stories in the books of SvenHassle. Skip the movie and stick to the books!

Warning. Non-removable sub-titles

in the version I received, although the movie soundtrack is in English, when you first put in the dvd it gives you a choice of which of the scandinavian languages you want the sub-titles to be in. At no point then or later is there an option for having no sub-titles. Also they are in thick white letters, and are very obtrusive.

Good film

I have seen this film a couple of times and have found that I like themovie. It is not the quality of Stalingrad but I think if follows thebasic premise of the books by Sven Hassle. Other people have ripped itto shreds and said that it was trash but I found that the books and thefilm are quite similar in tone. It does not follow the book Wheels ofTerror exactly but it does a good job of capturing the flavor of thebooks. I would encourage people to try to find a copy. Used VHS tapesoften show up on Ebay and even European DVDs can be found. Be sure tosearch for both titles as The Misfit Brigade seems to be only the USAtitle.

Very watchable budget WWII action adventure

A very watchable low budget WWII action adventure in the same vein asKelly's Hero's. You could say it's a cross between Kelly's Heros andthe Dirty Dozen. It's a light-hearted adaptation of a Sven Hassle novelabout a German penal tank crew sent to the Russian Front. On theirreturn they are sent on a mission to destroy a train behind enemy lineswith the promise of retirement if their mission is successful. The toneis one of anti-war and anti-nazism, with the laid back crew pushinginsubordination to the limits. The movie has a good cast andcharacters. David Carradine is superb as the nazi Col. Von Weisshage;and indeed one of the things that make it enjoyable is that all theactors seem to be enjoying their roles. The other thing that makes itenjoyable is the solid humour that keeps a steady pace.

Guilty Pleasure

For almost two years I successfully resisted renting this movie. Thatresistance was certainly aided by the cheap looking case of the video, andthe fact that director Gordon Hessler is known (if at all) in the US onlyfor a trio of cheap, British, AIP horror flicks, "Scream and Scream Again"being marginally the most watchable of the lot. But the desire to see whatHessler and his mostly American TV actor cast would do with such material, and the need for relief from a recent diet of "serious" indie filmviewing, pushed me over the edge to spend the whole one dollar rentalfee.Obviously "the Misfit Brigade" is no masterpiece, but it was far betterthanI expected, and, as others have pointed out, occasionally rises to thelevelof pretty damn good. I loved, for instance, the sequence in which themisfits watch a Soviet propaganda film projected on a large screen acrossthe front line. I don't know if this ever happened, and if it did, I doubthe films would have had the big studio production values of the onepresented. The bordello sequence was also funny, and reminded me of thehumor in some of the better Italian westerns. There was also the occasional visually striking shot. I particularly likedthe long tracking shot that begins on a Russian peasant coming to a road, then follows a Russian military vehicle through the gates of a compound, then swoops up on a crane to the roof, where a German soldier is observingthe vehicle. Then, in subtitled Russian, someone yells, "There's a Krautonthe roof," and we cut to a shot of the rest of the misfits (some distanceaway) as we here automatic weapons' fire on the soundtrack. This is damngood sequence. I've read in his mini biography here on Imdb, that Hesslerworked for Hitchcock's TV unit at Universal before directing features.Thislong tracking shot is certainly similar to one of Hitch's, and even sharesabit of the master's dark humor. But, OK, this film is not art. It is somewhat choppy (at least in theU.S.video version), and the low budget shows in some of the action sequences.Still, it's a fun little movie if one can accept its limitations. EvenDavidCarradine seems to be enjoying his minor role as an uptight Germanofficer.Oliver Reed is not on screen very long as a pompous German general whoarrives at the end of the film to decorate the misfit heros. I cannotagreethat his attitude during the air raid which follows detracts from thefilm's"realism." This is all slapstick anyway, which accounts for the film'sfinalcut, before some graphic violence would have betrayed it's lightheartedmood.

The war movie no one wants to release ......

Svel Hassle has written a lot of books about his war experiences as aDane in the German Army in WWII. Most of these fictional accounts butbased on real-life events), the books have been widely released inEurope, but from time to time are available in North America as well(Corgi Press). This is the one and only movie made from one of his books, a shamereally, since Swen Hassle portrays way in a most realistic manner;neither making light of what is happening, not glorifying war, butemphasizing the "Kameradschaft" - the effects of the war's events onSwen and his friends. The movie unfortunately has some flaws that keep it from being reallygreat. Foremost of these is the casting of David Carradine as a Germanofficer. Too bad, since his performance in this film is sub-par atbest. The casting of Bruce Davison as Porta is a great choice, and he reallyshines in this movie, and along with David Patrick Kelly (as "TheLegionnaire") gives realistic performances. One of the major reasons this movie didn't receive wider distributionwas protests from a number of groups who thought the movie - althoughthey probably had not seen it - glorified the Nazi regime. It doesn't -it portrays war as brutal (on all sides), with no leaders to rely on,rather only one's fellow soldiers to depend on for your life.A side-note - Swen Hassle is still alive (at this writing) and untilrelatively recently, has still been writing (although not writingfiction any more). Two of the three major characters in his books(Tiny, Porta and the Legionnaire) survived the war as well.

A trip down nostalgia lane

To tell the truth, I liked this movie. It's not great, it's not even good, but it's a very entertaining piece of budget movie history, and consideringthat I am surprised at how good it actually became. Basically it is a classical Dirty Dozen/Guns of Navarone mixture. Group ofmisfits in German penal battalion goes on impossible mission, shot lots ofruskies, loose some good men and have some strange/amusing/other encounters. The acting isn't bad, in fact it's downright good in a few spots such asTiny and The Legionaire but generally it's pretty mediocre. What makes thismovie something more than B trash is the fact that it has some prettylikable characters and some pretty funny scenes. For example; throughout the movie we are given propaganda bulletins on theGerman radio talking about the heroes of Bektovka, who are holding outagainst all odds far behind enemy lines. One is compelled to laugh at theabsurdity when our heroes accidentally end up at Bektovka and discoveredthat the 'heroes' are living a quiet farm life together with the Russiandefenders of the village.Another fun thing, at least for me, was how equipment and uniforms changecontinuously throughout the movie. At one point even the German tanks (whichlook suspiciously like Russian JS3s) are transformed, into Russian T-55s.Wheels of Terror gave me a feeling of watching an episode of the 60s WW2series 'Combat' or the old Polish series 'Four Tankers and a Dog'. If you'relooking for a good war movie see Peckinpah's 'The Iron Cross' or Stone's'Platoon', but if you're looking for a trip down nostalgia lane Wheels ofTerror is the movie for you.

innocuous Eastern Front War movie that I'd somehow never heard of

This film is far from perfect, though I'm overall quite glad I saw it.It's basically THE DIRTY DOZEN if the protagonists were all Germansserving on the Eastern Front. Sound interested? Well I was hooked rightaway. The main strength to the film is the characterization. The threecentral characters are fleshed out pretty well and the interplaybetween them rings quite true. There's plenty of action sequencesinvolving tanks, planes, and a fair amount of explosions but overallthey're quite hindered by the low budget.Problems here include a lot of confusing moments, character decisions, and anachronisms. For one, we're introduced to the heroes at thebeginning of the film driving a soviet post-ww2 T-62 tank! Laterthey're seen manning two SU-122 tank destroyers, which were alsosoviet, but the film wants us to believe are STUG-III's which looknothing alike. Also, the heroes (a penal battalion) often speakirreverently of Nazis and SS, but the costuming department outfittedthem with Totenkopf SS emblems on their uniforms. However I must give credit to proper firearms. The uniforms overalllook quite good though I wonder what a Russian 1939 early war hat wouldbe doing on the front line in 1943/44. The Russian T-34/85's are quiteauthentic though with a lot of additions they wouldn't have had on inWW2. Overall the tank-fighting scenes are quite poorly done, thoughsomewhat realistic in showing that tanking is a very cooperation-basedprofession.Overall, this is a movie that will only appeal to WW2 buffs. It's apseudo-comedy but it isn't really that funny, per-say. It's an actionmovie too, but isn't particularly bloody or violent either.

Dogs breakfast of a movie adapted from an excellent book

When you consider the source material, this adaptation from Sven Hassel's bestseller Wheels Of Terror (one of a series of more than 10 books) about a German Penal Regiment fighting their way through battle after battle on the Russian front, should have been better than it is. Instead of making a gritty war movie with amusing moments in the style of the book, they've turned it into a caper movie trying to get cheap laughs with little substance. The music is straight out of a "Carry-On..." film, and the comedy elements really don't work at all. The C grade cast just about manage to get from A to B in the script without giving any real meat to their characters, and the whole thing goes off like a damp squib. Which is a shame when you think this could have been a late 80's Cross Of Iron instead of the second rate Kelly's Heroes that it turned out. It's hard to believe this film was made *after* Platoon had revised the way war movies are made. The Misfit Brigade is like a throwback to the less-than-serious war movies of the 60's - no bad thing if it's done well, but it's not.Oliver Reed and David Carradine only appear for a combined screen time of about 5 minutes, so having them at the head of the cast list is stretching things a bit. One bizarre factoid though is that the kid that played the young Russian soldier in Peckinpah's vastly superior Cross Of Iron is all grown up and cast as Sven Hassel, the author, here, although he's reduced to a mere face in the crowd with little or nothing to do for nearly the entire feature. That's not to say the film's a waste of time. I didn't find it at all funny (although the slapstick score was obviously telling me where and when I should be laughing) but maybe I felt let down by the fact that I was expecting something a little different to what I got. It's certainly not a bad film, it's about 20 years too late for the niche market it was aiming for and as such it'll probably rot on video for the rest of its days.Don't do what I did and expect a reasonable adaptation of a great rollercoaster ride of a book, if you do you'll be disappointed. It has its moments, but turning a blind eye to Germans fighting WW2 using East European post-1960 tanks is a bit harder to do when the film doesn't give you much in return. It's more of a curio than anything else. If you want to see the Germans at war watch Das Boot, Cross Of Iron, or All Quiet On The Western Front. If you want to see an old fashioned style WW2-set caper movie in the style of Kelly's Heroes or The Dirty Dozen (but nowhere near as good) then The Misfit Brigade might be what you're looking for. At least it's better than the TV movie sequels they made for The Dirty Dozen.

Wheels Of Terror

Even though the film falls short of the book and it was made on a limited budget(reason for which I gave it only 3 stars) it was still entertaining. I wish some big studios would bring to life all the other books written by Sven Hassel.Adventure, action, carnage, war and humour would all interact in these movies if only someone would invest time and money...but since the Danish hold all the rights for making movies based on Sven's books...there's not much chance of seeing them on the screen and in the style that only the Yanks could produce. The movie is about a group of german soldiers who hate nazis that are sent behind enemy lines to blow up a strategical railway/depot,more or less it is a one way ticket.

Misfit Brigade / comment

I feel very close to what Laybarsinister said . As a long range readerof Sven Hassle books , I have been amazed by how close from the imageswe built at reading the Hassle war squad story , the actors have beenselected. Especially Tiny , Old man and Alfred Kalb-the légionnaire -,they are so close in their physical and in their behavior, that there isalmost no gap at all between the film and the book, which is a veryrare performance ! Cheers for the choice of actors and for the actorsthemselves!.Forinstance Porta does not look so close, physically, buthis actor job is so excellent, that we may think all of them are avidreaders and fans of Hassle's books. This little film is unpretentious yet surprisingly a kind of artisticsuccess in restoring the spirit of a story as the author has told it inhis writing.Once more,a very rare success,as film makers don't usuallybother too much sticking to the writer actual storyboard. Only oneregret : with this team of actors and the Hassle saga ,so full ofevents and historical facts ,it could have given 2 or 3 more filmswithout any danger of boring the public .

Mediocre low-rent film of a good novel.

A brief history from the book publishers:-"'Legion of the Damned' was the first of 14 novels written by Sven Hassel, a Danish volunteer who served in the German army throughout World War II. Never before had violence been described in such hideously graphic detail: it was a far cry from British or American war novels. Based on Sven Hassel's own horrific experiences fighting on the Russian Front, "Legion of the Damned" won critical acclaim across Europe and America and was translated into 15 languages. It has now been optioned for a film."LotD was written whilst Hassel was a prisoner at the end of the war. Started in a Russian camp, it was completed through transfers to American, British and finally Danish prisoner facilities. On release, Hassel - who was wounded eight times during the course of his service - moved to Spain to begin a post-war life, having fought in the French, Italian and Russian theatres. He was born in Fredensborg, Denmark in 1917, signed on in the merchant navy at 14, completed compulsory military service in Denmark in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, enlisted in the Wehrmacht, deserting with the rank of gefreiter (a junior corporal in the US, a lance-corporal in the UK) after the French campaign. Court-martialled, caged and then "pardoned" into a penal regiment for the duration. He was never in the SS, as has been suggested in other reviews.LotD is the autobiographical account of the horror and madness of war at a personal level, and the first book from the author (originally published 1957). The subsequent novels are fictional stories based on the authors experiences and sights he witnessed (none of which could have been pretty!).However, the oft-referred film of LotD has never materialised (at least, I can't find it). What we got was The Misfit Brigade, a film adaptation of Wheels of Terror, the first fictional novel. Unfortunately, as with a lot of movie interpretations in that era, it doesn't follow the book particularly closely and the acting is definitely Z-list. The low budget is evidenced by the use of east European actors (at that time a rare practice) and the poor technical accuracy. A production by a director with talent and big screen experience using current SFX techniques and genre standards would doubtless make for a better picture but it's unlikely to happen - but even with the SFX technology available at the time this movie is poor. When this was made we had yet to be spoiled by the opening twenty minutes of Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line, or any number of other war films but, nonetheless, this one doesn't really cut it for me.In short, this movie is okay - definitely not a great watch, but okay. You really need to detach your mind from the book (if you've read it) before watching and pretend it is just another war movie. However, if you are any sort of aficionado of the books, or a purist, give it a miss... For myself, I watched it because I've read all the books and enjoyed them. However, that's an hour-and-a-half of my life I'm never going to get back...If you haven't read the books, I thoroughly recommend doing so. However, it's definitely best to start with Legion of the Damned - but I'd give this movie a miss if you're going to work through all the novels. It'll spoil it for you if you don't!

GUENOT PHILIPPE 2012-04-20 08:22:29

Not bad but forgettable.

I should say it's a very poor man's CROSS OF IRON. The spirit is thesame: German army troops, a platoon actually, lost in the middle of theRussian front. I won't add anything more to the other comments, whichare very interesting concerning details, except, again, that thescreenwriter was inspired by Sam Peckinpah's war movie shot in 1977.Brutal vision of war from the German side, in Russia, without anyglorification of this very same war, helped by a powerfulcharacterization - for this kind of production, I mean. A war moviethat ends with a sort of moral. The cowardliness of the superiorofficers is pointed out very clearly. In this movie, they are notMaximilien Schell but Oliver Reed and David Carradine.A pretty good ending.

This is on my top 10 war/anti-war film list.

This is one of my favourite flicks!Based on the Sven Hasselbook"WHEELS OF TERROR."Nothing fancy here.Good casting jobbringingHassel's characters to the silver screen.Having read most ofHassel'sbooks, makes me biased towards this film.It has all the elements ofagood war/anti-war film.David Carradine has a blast as thecommanderand, the cast works well with/off each other.Oliver Reed has acameothat is perfect for him.I really like the tank sequences.Realarmorwas used to great effect. This is on my top 10 war films list.It is a shamethat no other films were made, based on Hassel's books.

For its audience

Yes, for the intended group of viewers, this apparently hits the mark, according to the reviewer of a respectable paper here. I didn't have tolook for that; they put it on the cover. Another piece of evidence forhow desperate they were to find *something* positive and inciting toput on there is the fact that they make mention of Leonard Maltin'sMovie and Video Guide giving it no less than two stars... you know, outof four. Is that supposed to be high praise? What, are they just proudthat he noticed its existence at all? I get the impression that thefollowing facts are not widely known in the rest of the world, and wantto set the record straight. Sven Hassle is a fraud. He almostdefinitely never experienced battle, he talked to a bunch of people whohad. It is probable that his wife authored the books(I haven't read aword of them, but what I hear is that they're pure war pornography), hedictated them to her. A Nazi, he worked for the Germans during the war,and then turned in his buddies in hopes of reducing his sentence oncethey lost. Whether or not it worked, he still got(though did not serveall) 10 years; in comparison, those who had worked as soldiers for theGermans got between two and four years, or only one. The allegationsare confidential, so we don't know what he did; however, it can't havebeen all that small. This does match the tone of the novels, as far asI understand. The wise-guy attitude, as well. This comes dangerouslyclose to throwing out all credibility and tension right at thebeginning, and then proceeds to do so not much later, and then, in caseanyone was still caring about anything that happens in this, it goeseven further. Are we meant to accept whatever this deems fit to toss atus? What, because WW2 happened? This does not treats it with enoughrespect for that to be sufficient on its own. There is next to no senseof danger, the characters get off too easily. This has entirely toomany goofy and silly instances, and it gets to be embarrassing. Itmakes the rest of the film tough to take seriously; I mean, it'sfarcical at times. We're talking cringe-inducing. Gone is the majorityof the impact of the couple of powerful, emotional moments(also onaccount of them being immediately preceded or concluded by "comicrelief" that isn't funny), what there is of authenticity, realism andrichness in detail. You get an idea of how minuscule the charges had tobe to get imprisoned... well, they seem fine. They get bad food insmall portions! Don't worry, no one has a single line where theycomplain about it. Penal corps! Safe. Collective punishment! Apunch-line. All that has any effect is the kid and the catch-22 ofsorts/test. The tank action is reasonable. This has good pacing hereand there. And it is impressive that the Hollywood aspect is not whatruins this(which is not to say it helps). The cast have a lot of actingchops, it's unfortunate they don't get to show it in this. There is alot of disturbing content, a bit of violence, some strong language anda little nudity and sexuality in this. I recommend this to fans of thewritten originals, I guess. 5/10

Pretty Lame

When I saw that this movie was released in 1987, I was worried that itmight be another 80s low-budget "wanna-be-big-war-movie" the likes ofThe Big Red One or Casablanca Express. Sad to say that my assumptionswere correct. When I watch other movies on DVD that contain deleted scenes, Isometimes wonder why a director deleted certain scenes. If the sceneswere deleted from this one that should have been, there would not havebeen much left. There isn't much more to say about this flick, except that I was neversure if it was supposed to be a comedy or a serious movie.

The Dirty Dozen goes bratwurst!

Well it isn´t quite Saving Private Ryan, but that is no surprise I guess. However, the fact that I watched Spielbergs masterpiece, only a few weeksbefore I layed my eyes on this rather unknown WW2 movie, have contributedgreatly to my sense of what you have the right to expect. So bear that inmind when you read the rest of this gibberish."Wheels of Terror" or "The Misfit Brigade"(The most suitable title if youask me) is based on the books by Sven Hazel about a group of "criminalelements" in a german penal regiment. The books are entertaining andhighlyrecommendable, so I had high hopes for this movie. It kicks of in 1943with"our" platoon returning from the battle of Stalingrad, in a tank that isaspost-war as the media you are reading this through. Well I can´t avoidmentioning just a few more flaws:The russians speak russian as they should, however the germans speakenglish.Try to picture this: You are a german commander. You have two tankdestroyersin a good hulldown position. In your binoculars you see some T34´sapproaching your position. What seems to be the right thing to do?A. Wait until the T34´s are within, a you can´t miss kindda range, andthendestroy ´em.B. Order your tank destroyers to move forward, in an attempt tooutmanoeuverthe extremely fast and turreted T34´s.A few minutes into the battle a T34 crushes your command vehicle beneathitstracks. What is your initial reaction?A. Disbelief.B. Disbelief and a feeling that maybe you shouldn´t have driven your greenamerican Jeep onto the battlefield anyhow.Well now try to picture this: You are a general in the german armystandingin a german camp in russia. Suddenly eight russian planes start strafingthearea. What would you do?A. Try to find some cover ASAP.B. Walk over to a slow, unarmed recon-plane and complain that there is nopilot to get you the hell out of there. If you feel deep in your heart that B,B and B are the right answers, thenyou will probaly regard this, as one of the most realistic war movies evermade. Please don´t think that this is an all bad movie. The dialogue andportrayalof the soldiers in the platoon are caught spot on and stays true to thebooks. Especially the performance of Jay O. Sander as "Tiny", the big dumdemolition "expert", is worth mentioning.Watch this if you liked the books or are a big fan of warmovies.5/10

Entertaining

The movie is take from Sven Hasels Non-fiction books which have now been proven to all be made up. The story is fiction and should be treated that way. It is humorus, but a dark humor. Many of the actors have gone on to much bigger careers. It is not inteded to be a serious war movie and should not be taken that way. It is entertaining and makes light of something that was so serious. It is worth watching just to see what was in Sven Hassels books.

Banality As It's Best

I just saw The Misfit Brigade / Wheels Of Terror and I loved it. Thisis American style entertainment, simple and plain, all traditional, unsophisticated, popular, more quality of a TV series than a movie -and GOOD I could just eat the disc. This is America, so horriblyunderrated by high-nosed Europeans - and by Americans themselves! Thefilm is based on a Sven Hassle novel about a German tank crew on theEastern Front in WWII. So American in style and quality. Those typicaleasygoing toughs fixing everything with perfect, soundly unrealisticease. An unpretentious, slightly silly film with lots of action and solidhumor, and I already know this will be one I will frequently see again. In short: Banality At It's Best.
