I would have enjoyed the movie better if I hadn't already seen all the good parts in the trailer.

I am going to stop going to movies which have trailers (prevues) that giveeverything away! My wife and I were looking forward to What Women Want, butevery time a good line was spoken or something happened that would havebeena nice surprise, it was ruined because we had seen it in the trailer.Smarten up, movie producers! I have already decided not to see Castawaybecause I have seen the whole thing in the trailer. It even shows thatthecastaway makes it home okay after four years on the island! Yes, it's allin the trailer! No thanks to paying $20 for that.

a hilarious movie from begining to end

In this movie they have two of the very best actors working together to make a wonderful movie. mel gibson in the movie is a man who is the typical male. His fellow employees think hes a complete jerk, loser ,dead beat you name it hes it.When hes supposed to be pormoted to a higher job he is turned down, and helen hunt ends up taking his job, hes mad we know and will do anything to get his job back, who wouldnt?Anyway hes trying on the control top pantyhose and lipstick, nailpolish, home waxing, mascara,"wonder" bra, and the like when his daughter walks in.. surprise! when she leaves he gets drumk and he falls on the bath beads and has the hair dryer on. the tub is full of water and what do you know bam! he falls right into the water and gets electricuted and when he wakes up the next day he can hear what women think. hes thinking you know " im crazy what do i do?" who wouldn't. then as the movie progresses he starts to fall for helen hunt, they have a relationship, his daughter is starting to appretiate him now that hes trying to have a relationship with her now. this movie is a really funny movie from beginning to end and more.. i think everyone should see it once if not more..

Why oh why do they make these types of film?

Perhaps I'm from another planet; perhaps I'm too much of a thinker;perhapsit's a date flick and I'm happily married, perhaps...There are some movieswhere I have to work hard to follow it through, but this one doesn't evengive me a reason to want to do so...think of the time, money and energyinvested in modern films like this one, and think of the poor kids themoneycould feed. Okay, I'm taking it too seriously, but in simple terms: Themovie is not funny nor entertaining...ask for your money back.

Enjoy!

I liked this film far more than I expected after reading the otherreviews.Gibson and Hunt work surprisingly well together, and the sub-plots addsignificantly to the film's message. Mel Gibson does a splendid job;indeedit is difficult to say who else could have handled this role with suchaplomb (now that Clark Gable is no longer around). Ignore the negativereviews and just go see this film!

Abuse of a Gift

A star-studded cast is gathered in this tale of an advertising man who manages to gain the power to hear what women are thinking. While at first he almost goes crazy, he soon learns, with the help of an odd therapist, to take advantage of the situation and improve his relationships with the various women he is in contact with. Three women are his main targets. Marisa Tomei is a simple sexual conquest. Helen Hunt is the woman who became his boss. And a quiet office worker who may need more help than anyone.Mel Gibson does an excellent job as the man with the power. Helen Hunt does a passable job as a love interest but the script just does not show her as qualified for her new job. She is shown as being a good advertiser but not as a Creative Director. This is the fault of the script and not the actress. I was a little put off by the Bette Midler character who basically convinces Mel to take advantage of women. This is probably not really what was intended but it is what the script results in. But still, the acting is pretty good throughout with Gibson really shining during his solo scenes.A pretty good movie for couples although the final resolution may be a little weak for couples looking for a really good romance story. Light humor, heavy humor, and some touching moments combine to keep the movie fresh and moving. Check it out.

Touching and Witty Rom-Com

I know, I know, Mel has sure changed a lot lately. That still doesn'ttake away from the charm of this film."What Women Want" is amusing, comfortable, and sometimes funny (Meltrying to think like a woman!) Problem is that Helen Hunt is playingthe same character that she has played since "As Good As It Gets" andincluding "Cast Away"...a woman left or hurt or done wrong by a man;who can and will stand on her own; but there is a sensitve side; andyes! the right man can peal back the layers and make her his! YAWN!!!Mel's antics are great and his relationship with his daughter show thathe has a lot of catching up to do as a dad...but this film isconvoluted by the fact that we never really focus on any one thing as atheme. Case in point: the employee that is suicidal...Mel could havehad a real moment. I'm not sure if it was a faux pas by the director orthe editing group, but what the hell happened? What a letdown when thestoryline was working. I highly recommend this film for good, solidentertainment!

A comedy with few jokes and women with no brains

I have to say that this film was dreadful. Mel Gibson is no Cary Grant andputs in an embarrassing performance - maybe the only person who could havepulled this off would have been Steve Martin - at least he is FUNNY.This film is supposed to be a comedy and I think I can remember smilingabout twice whilst watching it - if you want to see original humourdefinitely give this film a miss - you'll have seen many of these jokesbefore. However the worst thing about this whole film is its message - what womenwant seems to say that they all want a man to look after them - be it as afather or partner and that they are incomplete without one - come on give mea break!!! The women are portrayed as pathetic in this film - they don'thave an ounce of intelligence between them and don't come up with oneinteresting or intelligent thought. Basically though they shouldn't worrybecause a man is all they want to make them complete andhappy.A complete waste of time and an insult to the viewers intelligence - avoidat all costs!!

weak, oversimplified, overlong, dull.....

i think the one line summary says it all, really. this movie is prettyweak.it's very predictable, shamelessly pandering, and presents anoversimplifiedand cutesy picture of male-female relations. it's strange that it's makingso much money, because the audience i saw it with was decidedly nonplussedby it. even miss congeniality was better than this. i guess if you likemelgibson you'll enjoy it enough. but i can't really recommend it to anyoneelse. also, lauren holly? hello? talk about wasted. it was nice to seemarisa tomei again, though, because she was quite funny. also, it lookslikehelen hunt has a really fake tan, and that bothered me throughout thewholething. yuck.

For all us guys.

A man suddenly finds himself able to read women's minds and actuallyknow what women want from men. Now,what guy doesn't want to be in thatposition? This was a terrific idea for a film and it was executed toperfection.Who better than Mel Gibson to represent us in thissituation? He's the one man women probably wish understood them.At anyrate,Gibson really turns on the Gibson charm here and there's not abetter film in which to do that.Helen Hunt makes a great leading ladyand is her usual charming self. Also, from the supporting cast,it'salways great to see Alan Alda, one of the most underrated actors of ourtime. This film starts with a very unique, funny idea, and it does notdisappoint in terms of how good it can be executed.Well casted, welldirected and very funny film.

Unbelievable product placement...oh and there is a terrible movie as well

Cheesey, predictable, etc as per other reviews but the worst aspect of thefilm has to the blatant product placement.Like the Fedex movie (Castaway) the plot actually hinges on the productplacement. That I can live with, but then there is a 45 second piece in theback end of the film where a whole ad (with voiceover) isshown...Come on Hollywood the ads are before the film...

Loses steam towards the end, but ultimately worthwhile.

I popped in the DVD expecting a die-hard chick flick. I was pleasantlysurprised.Mel Gibson plays a hilarious jerk. He is so selfish, egotistical and malechauvinistic that you can't help but laugh. He carries the movie frombeginning to end, and does so with complete success.Gibson plays a marketing executive who is passed up for an expectedpromotion because he needs to learn to market to the female demographic. While brainstorming an assignment related to this deficiency, he is electrocuted and blah blah you know the rest. What struck me about thismovie was how realistic his personal transition was as a result of hisnewfound "skill". he didn't turn into a completely sympathetic mushmouthright away because that is not the sort of person he was.The supporting cast, especially Alan Alda and Mark Feuerstein are all prettygood. Helen Hunt is adequate, but not completely believable as the toughsavvy executive who takes Gibson's expected promotion right out from underhim. She just does not come across as a particularly strongcharacter. The movie does dissolve into a cliched romantic comedy towards the end, butthe journey up to that point makes it worthwhile. 7/10

It reminded me of one of those late 50's early 60's romantic comedies.

A new creative director (Helen Hunt) is hired by an ad agency (run by AlanAlda) to bring it up to date by appealing to the women's market. Mel Gibson,an account executive and a real man's man, was slated for that position, andhe wants to get rid of Hunt. At her first staff meeting, Hunt gives eachperson a package of various women's products, and each must come up with acampaign for at least one of the items. At home, Gibson tries out the products in a tour de force of cross-dressing.Funny, if not roll on the floor hilarious, and he does it with an aplombthat makes it look so easy that you at the very least have to admire hisskill. In the process, Gibson falls into a tub, followed by a live hairdryer, and receives a shock that alters his brain so that he can hear thethoughts of women. As a result, he bowls everyone over, especially Hunt, with his creative insight into the women's market. Now he's got her rightwhere he wants her...or so he thinks. But creative insight turns out to be atwo-edged sword.I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would. It reminded me of one ofthose late 50's early 60's romantic comedies, at least initsearlier scenes. In fact, I liked it so much that it made me feel sorry forWoody Allen. His "Curse of the Jade Dragon" suffers bycomparison. I mention it, because Allen's film also stars Helen Hunt and, interestingly, has a similar situation–a woman is hired ontobring a company up to date, and she threatens to disrupt the man's career.Even mind-alteration is involved, although of a differentkind.I think the mind-reading premise is brilliant and is set in just the rightcontext, and Hunt and Gibson played off each other very well.I'veseen Mel Gibson on a couple of Jay Leno shows, and he seemed ill-at-ease andsometimes a little abrupt, as though he were either very shy, not toobright, or for some reason just didn't want to be there. But what adifference when he's on screen and playing a role that in bygone days wouldhave been filled by Jack Lemmon or Tony Randall or Rock Hudson. Ok, maybehe's not the all-round actor that Lemmon was, but he fit that particularrole perfectly. And he even does a bit of a Gene Kelly routine!

What a girl wants..

I only watched this movie on the suggestion of one of my friends and I was very surprised at how much I liked it. I love Helen Hunt and once again she does a terrific job. Not to mention Mel Gibson plays a pretty good comedic role. Def a must see chick flick.

It was actually kind of funny

I could not believe that I actually found this movie kind of funny. Ithought it would be a lame Mel Gibson vehicle. I had a nice surprise. From the first opening moments, the movie pulls you in. Helen Hunt isnot bad either. Marisa Tomei is perfect for the role. The storyrevolves around a top NYC advertising executive, Nick Marshall (playedby Gibson). He has an electric shock that leaves him able to readwomen's minds. Sounds lame, right? Yeah I thought so too, but it actually worked forlaughs. That's because Marshall is considered to be a male chauvinistand womanizer by all the females in his office. When he finds out hisnew boss Darcy Maguire is a woman (Hunt), well then the antics beginwhen he tries to sabotage her in the workplace. In the end Marshallrealizes that his new "power" is not a curse but actually a blessing indisguise. He starts to see the points of view of the women he belittledbefore. It's a pretty funny watch.

Rubbish *Happy-Hollywood-Love-Story*

I'm MAD! What could have been a great comedy is totally spoiled by theboring love story. Why?!? WHY?!? Why can't Hollywood (and Americans) makereal comedies? Why do you guys always have to ruin the fun with includingsomewhere around 30-40 minutes of totally uninspiring side twists that'snoteven funny? I'm talking Sleepless In Seattle, You've Got Mail and now WhatWomen Want. I know what I want when I go see a comedy and that's a GOODLAUGH! Understand that one? Capice? What Women Want is nothing but a(mostly) boring American/Hollywood love story with the standard A *HappyEnding*. I hate wasting my time AND money on crap like this. Mel, youshouldstick to films like Braveheart, Payback and Lethal Weapon OR choose betteramong all the film offers you get. This one simply STINKS! (and that fortwofull hours).

It's a must see

A pee your pants comedy. We men only wish we could read womens minds.

Delightful Comedy

MINOR SPOILERS AHEADIs it me or did Mel Gibson seem to play this role a little too well? Despitebeing outside the target audience for this movie, I still enjoyed this movieand found it to be a rather delightful comedy. My only real complaint will be that it's too long and drags along at theend. But the majority of this movie is a pleasure to watch.Mel Gibson who starts off a "man's man" is an advertising guy who is aboutto get promoted to Creative Director - he is a legend in his field and thetime is right. But of course, things go wrong. The Board instead hires awoman (Helen Hunt), seeing how the world is now a woman's world and picturesof half-naked women no longer sell the products. So... on her first day on the job, Helen makes everyone come up with someideas for some female products. She gives everyone a box full of the junk.Mel, trying to be new-age tries all the goodies to get into the mind of awoman. An incident with a Blow-Dryer and Bathtub sets the events in motion.Overall, Great Movie. 8/10

2/3 Great !

It's in the script, and I mean it in a good and bad sense. First of allthis is unique movie, since it's a romantic comedy with supernaturalcase as well. And what a supernatural it is : reading the mind of thewomen (the dream of all the men!). The movie's first 2 thirds aresuper; everything looked masterful, hitting the mark brilliantly. Butthe third act wasn't the same at all. From the moment of theunexplained matter of losing the superpower till the laconic end isnothing but a dismal, especially when all the good funny memorablecharacters that we saw before got no chance at all to have a finalstatement or a reasonable end or anything equals their earlier nicenoisiness. (Josh Goldsmith & Cathy Yuspa)'s fantasy factor wasn't builton solid ground or even got its own fantastic logic, which's somethingyou'll going to witness again and clearly at their next project (13Going on 30 - 2004). The storyline of (Marisa Tomei) was trivial andjust for assuring how the lead's character, by his lie about himself asa gay, will go straight in his new relationship. It didn't also give usthe great chance to see how the man's man would do when he got fairedat the end, or how he would work under the authority of his womanlover; a never done anticlimax. Obviously we have a very smart scriptas a criminal here, which mistreated the third act. Though : this isone enjoyable movie, got the esprit, rhythm, and the glamour ofSinatra's songs (something not existent in any of today's movies), iteven managed somehow to be a very rare superhero movie where the mainidea is so cinematic and not based on a comic. (Nancy Meyers) handledthe job of directing so fine, I think it got something to do with thefact that she's a screenplay writer herself. She knows the good scriptwhen she sees it, still in love with the intelligent determined workingwomen like her movies as a writer (Private Benjamin, Jumpin' JackFlash, I Love Trouble), and she's capable as a director of transformingthe witness into image, performance, and lovely pace. Look at themovie's smooth status like a dream, no, it is a dream comes true. Ithas some amusing moments that all the elements succeeded in giving it atasty flavor : the scenes of the lead alone in his apartment (talking, dancing, waxing !) there is so serene sense about them, thephotomontage of the daughter trying to select the right dress with(Christina Aguilera) singing What a Girl Wants, the shot of (Gibson)standing in the face of fate asking to take his gift back; that was thetop of them all summarizing the movie's distinctive talents and itsmagical personality in general. (Mel Gibson) looks great in his verylate first romantic comedy (or his first pure comedy without action),the 44-year-old star used all of his real gifts to dazzle us with somebrilliant performance that I didn't expect it to be as very good asthis. He owns the role as if he is Nick Marshall in his real life !(Helen Hunt) is a mine of live emotions, she can deliver at least 10different reactions in one scene so simply, also her vocal performancewas perfectly sharp, confidence, and sentimental exactly like hercharacter. The writing mastered all the scenes that got a mind readingto be one of the movie's treasures. The too many characters made such awonderful world around with fancy details. I loved the basic wickedidea of it where the man is just intimidated by the woman'sintelligence. The message of a more sensitive man, or a more feminineone was well put, where the whole thing is about how he must "Listencarefully", yet not in a deceitful or manipulative way. Actually (WhatWomen Want) has the rare ability to attract men and women equally, believe it or not my most male-fanatic male friends love it so much !!It will live long as a classic example for a highly entertainingmeaningful movie that we wouldn't have many of it along the years, asolid romantic comedy where there is some analyzing for its 2 maincharacters, and as a movie where everything is great except its thirdthird ! Although this makes it not on the top of them, but it'sdefinitely one of my favorites.

My wife will kill me....!

Well, to like this film, you've really got to like the lovely Mel. Andwhilehe's had his moments in the past, he is just starting to get .... on....my....nerves. OK, the character is _meant_ to be obnoxious, in order to givethe film its comedic spin, but boy does Mel smarm and squirm his waythroughthe role. As most other comments have said, the women characters, particularly Tomei, are woefully underdeveloped and underused, leaving thefilm to stand and fall on Gibson's performance. The plot lurches along too: Tomei is written out with an unbelievable plotdevice, the 'daughter' sub plot is predictable and the ending just doesn'tconvince. As said, you like Mel, you get Mel. But if you're looking for sensibleplotand believable characters, try elsewhere. It's almost as if the great Meldecided there just wasn't enough room in the film for anythingelse.
