A ghostly ship looms silently ahead as the crippled, ocean-going, salvage tug Sea Star approaches. The Sea Star crew, their ship slowly sinking, has sought refuge in the eerie calm of the eye of a typhoon to make repairs and hopefully avert disaster. But somethings terribly wrong. The ship, a Russian science vessel bristling with high-tech radar, electronics and other wonders, appears to be deserted. Unfortunately for the crew of the Sea Star, nothing could be further from the truth. Shelter from the storm turns into terror on board as they find themselves stalked by a mutating alien life form that has traveled across time and space, an energy force unlike any in the universe. It is powerful. Intelligent. And it has found the perfect planet to inhabit. Now, in order to survive, it must destroy the one threat to its existence a virus called man.
This film explores some good ideas: The virus-alien combo that is becomingstandard since X-files; technological invasion as seen on Sphere; and teamdisintegration, a common place on a ship. The problem is that as the film lays its foundations all falls to ground.Even the captain of the ship, a well-constructed villain, dies too early !Maybe what misses is a better developed script. It seems as if the authordidn't know what to do with the Virus.
Virus...I rented this movie picturing some sort of world wide epidemicof HIV you could catch like a cold. Nothing of the sort of course. Theminute I saw the fake looking sea surrounding the tug boat...I thoughtthis is going to be a dog. I was right. Turns out the virus is eitheran alien computer program or the alien computer program thinks humansare viruses...I was never quite clear on that point.Someone else commented that science fiction has to fit science... inthis movie nothing looks functional from a scientific view point ..thesmall robots with leather wings look like they are made from a child'serector set and a dead bat. Ditto for the larger half cadaver halferector set machines all of which have to be hooked by cables to thecentral computer... I guess the aliens had not advanced to wirelessconnections despite having flying saucers etc.... it is just dumb dumband more dumb. Gee how convenient that the ship has rocket powered ejector seats???Huhhh? I bet the Russians install them on all their military ship!!! Assome one else stated this is half slasher half half science fiction andbad at both. 75 million you have to be joking. Nothing is frighteningin this movie.
this is one of the least original thriller/horror movies of the decade.every element is borrowed from another movie, with the Borg from star trekbeing the most obvious (bulletproof cyborgs from terminator 2 and thebeing-trapped-in-a-spaceship/boat-oh-so-popular-aliens premise beinganother.) from the very beginning, you which characters will be picked offand who the two survivors will be, but unfortunately, you have to wait foreach one to be picked off one by one.and to make things worse, donald sutherland fakes an irish accent!terrible!
First the characters. They are horrid collection of vile, humorless, cowardly schmucks, here for - I don't even remember what got them onboard the boat, it made so little sense and mattered not at all.The Donald Sutherland character especially - embarrassing. Clearlyintended as some sort of political joke, but two decades out of date, and annoying even back then. The acting - ham on toast. The dialog: worst I've heard in any horrorfilm since Ed Wood's "Plan 9." The monster: nothing new, a confusingmish-mash of disconnected 'scary' ideas. The plot - one-by-one they go down - as usually happens in suchpictures. The sense of tension, the shocks, the thrills - never happen. The virus - worse than a flu, will have you puking and you can't stop.Best defense - avoid this movie like the plague!
This has to be one of the worst movies ever made...I gave it 2 stars just because it made me laugh in the process...what was donald sutherland thinking along with Jamie Lee Curtis! I wouldn't recommend this to anyone...
In my country, I don't think this film even made it to cinemas, and after seeing it I know why. I was warned away from this film, I watched simply out of morbid curiousity and plead with others not to make the same mistake. Fortunately it is fairly low profile. You can't blame the actors, we've seen they are all good at their jobs - a bit past their prime - but still good. It was the script, and the effects left something to be desired. What's more, there's just too much Russian at the start, and they forgot to put in all the subtitles. It starts slow, and hovers between watchable and just plain bad. In the end, it just wasn't watchable enough.
An expensive B-style monster-widdles-away-the-crew flick. This movie isveryentertaining, and the performances are some of the best I've seen... forthis genre of film. The beast is cool and the concept epic, but it is fartoo expensively made for the narrow audience that likes such superviolent,effects-based films. For lovers of the Leviathan and Deep Star Six stylemovies, or for anyone who wants to see the Borg come to Earth a littleearly, see this movie.
The only way this delicious piece could be improved would be to have analien bursting out of Miss J.L.Curtis's chest.I was entranced frombeginning to end of this high camp masterpiece.Mr D.Sutherland 's seacaptain makes Mr R.Newton's Long John Silver seem a masterly study inself - restraint. It is of course supreme nonsense, indeed, arrant supremenonsense, and what the aforementioned Miss J.L.Curtis and MrD.Sutherland are doing in it can only be a matter of conjecture - itcertainly isn't acting that's for sure.Miss Curtis avoids eye contactwith the camera as if she hopes she will be mistaken for someone elseand Mr Sutherland makes the artistically sound decision to shoothimself very early on but is overtaken by events,a happenstance heclearly resents for the rest of the movie. Mr W.Baldwin playing ascruffy unshaven sailor at least gets the scruffy and unshaven bitright, the rest, sadly,is beyond him,and when he has to walk and talk atthe same time he goes to pieces. To my shame I am unfamiliar with theother members of the cast and hope to familiarise myself with theirwork by raiding the "Remainders" bin at "Blockbusters". Did I readsomewhere that the budget for "Virus"was 75 million dollars? Come onguys, you could buy several small countries for that......... What do weget in the way of bangs for our buck?Well, the storm sequences arepretty good, better in fact than in that George Clooney thing.Er,that'sabout it really. The rest are pretty standard Sci Fi effects,no betternor worse than many another space opera. The basic story is too wellknown to reiterate here. There will be no surprises for anybody whomight feel tempted to rent it.You will be in safe hands and able torelax and smile knowingly as you wait to catch a glimpse of bare fleshfrom Miss J.L.C. I could end by saying that I hope Mr D.Sutherland willnever give a worse performance, but I am a born pessimist. Whatever myfinicky reservations about the thespian talent involved,"The Virus" isoverall great fun and will entertain all but the most po - facedamongst you.
My brother was laughing at the terrible dialogue and the dull actionthroughout the movie, but VIRUS wore very thin with me. The movie is garbagepure and simple and it is a waste of time writing about how pathetic thispiece of dirt was to watch.Thing is on ship, wants to take over world and many people die trying tostop it.Sutherland is not so much a 'dominant actor,' anymore, let alone a 'dominantlife form.' Funny how the suits the females wear are pretty tight fit. Whatwas everyone thinking? What a waste of film spent on such a disaster. Thismovie sucked. You may laugh but be honest.
I liked "VIRUS' because it kept my whole attention throughoutthe movie. It had a lot of action mixed with science fictionand a thriller. The scenes kept me looking forward to seewhat will happen next. The actors and actresses portrayedwere very good. I would recommend this movie to anyonewholoves this type of genre.
This movie was so bad, I actually fell asleep. Don't even waste your time renting this film.
Before judging about the film itself, the only thing "original" was(according to the makers) the assimilation of human beings by electronicdevices. A lot of people go into reference with the BORG from Star Trek, butI found another strikingly similar flick:"Moon Trap", anyone?Walter Koenig and Bruce Campbell,... SAME THING!!Personally, I found the movie satisfying. Expecting a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror... thing from the Straight-to-video universe, hey, whynot.Nobody expected a masterpiece...
Jamie Lee Curtis and William Baldwin star in "Virus", the winter '98 thriller from visual effects artist turned director John Bruno (Terminator 2, The Abyss), and Universal Pictures. I rented this movie about a month ago just before "The Mummy" was released on video, I saw it because it seemed to look similar. When I saw it, I had mixed feelings: The visual effects and robot designs were exelent. The acting and screenplay needed a LOT of work. But, a noble effort.
Were we really supposed to believe that this can really happen? What wasJamie Lee Curtis doing in this movie? This has got to be the miscast role ofa lifetime, for her........
"The Terminator" meets "The Predator" and "Alien", and what we get is thisroutine but moderately effective horror thriller, which isn't quite as badas its reputation might lead you to believe. Sure, it lacks substance and(except for a few details)originality, but the energetic direction, the fastpacing and some impressively filmed explosions keep itpainless.Effects aren't particularly outstanding, though.
This movie was the Telletubbies sci-fi movie of the late '90's.OH MY GOD i cant beleive how let down i was when I saw this.Instead of the "next leading Science fictian movie",It creates a peice of (...) that makes the whole story (and Jamie lee Curtis, such a cool actress) Look like some peice of drama crap. The following is for those who like it: (...)
Wow harsh reviews, I didnt think it was that bad, yes, the story isnt original and the acting cant be compared to Shakespearean standards, but it did entertain. We follow a Selvage vessel, Captained by Donald Sutherland, and crewed by Jamie Lee as navigator, along with various Deck hands who become marooned in the eye of a storm, there they find a Research Vessel lying dead in the water. They soon discover that all is not well within this seemingly empty Russian ship. this is when the action takes place.Jamie Lee our Lead, takes control of a situation developing on board. It soon becomes clear that the ship is over run with biomechanical creatures connected to a Space born lifeform of unknown origin. Jamie is I suppose our Ripley (from Alien) type character who tries to survive and battle an unstopable creature who thinks humanity is a virus that needs to be purged. There are battles within their group as greed and a desire to survive and escape becomes opposing goals. I thought the action scenes were suspenseful exciting and not as gorey as some splatter movies out there, I compare this genre to Mc Donalds you know what your going to get, its familiar and satisfies that particular urge you get at lunchtime. So I hope you dont go in expecting a Gourmet meal because youll be disappointed. Enjoy anyway!
I believe that this movie was really good. The special effects were really neat. The plot is farfetched but it was pretty cool. A vius from outerspace takes over a Russian ship and enslaves all of it's crew as robots. Something rips them apart and puts them back together only with lots of metal and wiring. When Jamie Lee and her crew's little boat gets destroyed, they must go on the Russain ship. To Jamie and her crews horror, they find it crawling with deadly machines. It then becomes their job to stop it before it takes over the world. NOT THE BEST MOVIE but pretty cool. Not everything has to make sence, it is just their to be enjoyed.
To me is very simple: I really enjoy sci-fi movies and even more if they are horros movies. The whole idea of an alien life form using us as spare-parts scares the Jesus out me hence it is very attractive as well jejeje. I really like this movie. Actually i'm getting a replacement copy since i lost the one i had before.
Virus is the first great movie of the year. It has great special effects anda great cast. I give it a 10. See this movie TODAY!
