Its catchy enough to remember

well this is one of them movies that u can point out the mistakes right in front of u..... wasnt a high budget film but if ur a guy u like watching christina applegate then thats enough.......but the music was actually the most memorable thing in the movie i liked the plot and the overcoming of a downward spiral...its always good to see someone step up to a challenge even though its fake as hell but sill u gotta remember this is a movie.....

whatever

This movie ranks somewhere between average and i-seen-this-formula-before-somewhere-somehow.An aspiring musician (he plays the keyboard) loses his hands in a brutalassault, and becomes so dejected he eventually finds himself on the streets. He is found by a local nightclub owner who gives him a new lease onlife. This was average at best. I sort of liked it, and I'm an easy grader. Youmight give it a look if you're interested.** 1/2 out of ****

Scott Cohen Stands Out in this film.

Scott Cohen plays the exuberant and goofy Simeon with great energy andabandon. His character was totally believable as a creative and funky ravemusician. He had all the best lines, and he was the only one who actuallylooked like he was playing his instrument because his fingers were at leastin the correct zone of the keyboard for the music that was playing. Butonly one brilliant performance (and a lot of funky hats) can't carry thewhole film. Christina Applegate was less than her spunky self here. Andthe guy in the lead role blew an awesome opportunity to show us his rangeofgoing from successful to drunken bum in the street and beyond. He wasalmost not even there, and that's too bad. (See, I can't even remember hisname!) But overall, the story was an uplifting one, and carried with it agood anti-drug message. Perhaps a younger person than me should reviewthis: I was done with rave-type parties about 17 yearsago...

Awesome music :0)

Okay as the other people have commented, the movie was somewhat cornybut, the music was awesome! If you like techno and club music then youhave to buy the soundtrack to this one.The plot was good, just a low budget film......what low budget filmsare usually high ranked? hahaI bought the movie because I saw the preview on another movie I ownedand thought it was worth a try. I have watched it numerous times and itisn't that bad. It will make you want to dance though (club scenes) :)Techno rules~Angie~

Interesting idea...cheesy execution.

While the concept of Christina Applegate at a rave is in itself anintriguing idea, the plot here just doesn't do it justice. I would betempted to watch this film again (maybe with a support networkpresent), but primarily for three things:--Fierce Ruling Diva (a legendary techno group from the early 90s)performs in one scene (I have to find that song...)--the monologue delivered by the geeky rave keyboardist describing theway rave music is supposed to make you feel (accompanying himself withsome really tacky music that sounds like techno the way an early 90sfilm score person would do it). Loaded with buzz words, this choice bitof script had me laughing until I was in pain.--I would like to see if there was, in fact, anything else about thismovie worth remembering.

When a Married with Children star gives the best performance in the film, you know there's something not right about the film.

All I can say to "Vibrations," a schlocky, justifiably little-seen, 1995cyber/techno romance, is YUCK. Former "Twin Peaks" star James Marshall(andalthough I am very pro-Peaks stars, he is one that I can do without) playsan aspiring musician who gets in an accident removing both his hands. Hethen goes to the street and becomes your average homeless bum. One nighthefinds a nice abandoned storing garage, which turns into a rave as heawakens. There he meets Christina Applegate, giving the only decentperformance throughout this whole movie. She plays Anamika, an owner oftherave, and she soon falls for Marshall in a sappy, corny romance. Thebiggest problem here is the supporting cast (most notably Appegate'sexcruciatingly annoying roommates), and there is nothing, nothing at all, that can save "Vibrations" from being anything but bottom-of-the-barrelcrap.Yuck. Zero Stars out of Four.

watch just to see old school techno/rave groups FIERCE RULING DIVA, U96 and UTAH SAINTS

I'm not going to lie to you, the acting is pretty bad. The 'scene' accuracy is also very very low. For a subculture that had a unique style of dress, Christina Applegate looks as though she just came from a Pearl Jam concert. The music in the film that isn't from any real/legitimate artist of the day sounds the same as the car chase scene music in an old episode of Hunter. Why should you see this movie? Its so bad that its good. Infact its a personal favourite and thats why I have it 4 stars. Its definately worth checking out to see appearances by classic rave/techno acts FIERCE RULING DIVA and U96. Sadly, the US edition of the film does not include the performance by the UTAH SAINTS. It was cut from the original VHS release and I expected it to show up on the DVD. I dont know why..probably licensing? ...or maybe the Saint's saw the final cut of the film and didn't want anything to do with it! Here's a tip though, the hong kong region-free release of this dvd includes this cut scene!! This movie was written and directed by Michael Paseornek who is now the President of Lion's Gate Films. It stars Christina Applegate and James Marshall. Apparently this guy Scott Cohen who plays one of the sidekicks has a following and is often mentioned in relation to this movie. One other actress playing a side part in this is Faye Grant. She is most remembered from the classic 80's sci-fi mini series "V".

An Ed Wood film for the '90s

When I first saw VIBRATIONS back in 1996, I described it to friends whoswore I was making it up. A keyboardist (James Marshall) has his handscut off by some thugs playing around with a backhoe. He becomes ahomeless bum after his girlfriend flinches at the touch of his fakehands. Our hero then catches some zzzs in a warehouse next to a rave, and is booted out by the manager, played by Christina Applegate. She islater accosted by some thugs - not the same ones who cut off James'hands - and he comes to her rescue just as they pull a switchbladewhich lands squarely in the palm of one of the fake hands. Thisfrightens the thugs, who wander off muttering that "that dude isn'treal or something." Charmed by his heroics, but not his smell,Christina takes James home for a bath. She just happens to live in thesame building as some techno-wizards, who create "cyberhands" for ourpoor disabled protagonist. Just like that he becomes the top handlesstechno music star in the country. The scene where he's reunited withhis policeman dad is too precious, excruciating, and unbelievable todescribe, as are the final moments of the film, which involve revengeagainst the first batch of thugs, and a cryptic nod of the head to dadthat clearly signals, "those are the guys who cut off my hands." Theacting is atrocious, the script is beyond ludicrous, and it'sastonishing that anyone could keep a straight face while on screen. That said, in the spirit of PLAN 9, GLEN OR GLENDA, and others of thatilk, VIBRATIONS is a lot of fun.

in-the-fade 2012-05-06 05:23:13

Good vibrations.

First you don't know what to expect with a title like this, yet alonethe cover on the video case (which is different to the one that's onthis site). Sci-fi thriller? Far from it. This low-budgetstraight-to-video fare is set-up through the industrial techno (musicof course) scene and inspired for the generation X. Well it seems tothink so. It's a drama/blossoming love story/redemption and revenge allrolled into one.TJ Cray has big plans as a musician, but on his way to his first majorconcert he gets in an altercation with some thugs which involve hishands being served. Depression hits hard where he flees his family andfriends and bums around New York City mostly drunk. Soon he's rescuedby Anamkia and though hard work he discovers a way around living hismusic dream again. It was a pleasant diversion in the end with a constantly throbbing, loud and upbeat soundtrack to boot. Well with the subject at hand, youwould hope so. Anyhow it won't win any awards and within is a cheesyfeel to it all, as at times it goes over board with the sweetness. Atleast the script remained snappy, quick-witted and involving eventhough it wasn't the best. A red-headed Christina Applegate gives anappealing performance and certainly glows. James Marshell along side islikable too. Scott Cohen adds to the fruity factor. The story (one of those feel-good types) goes through the motions (andit flows rather well) involving the states that TJ finds himself in(angst, pity and relieve) and when the music scene opens expect a lotof sequences of DJ's doing their stuff in dance raves. This is wheneverything is turned around. The costume that's created for TJ israther well-etched too.A decently charming time-waster that's truly grounded in its matter.

2012-05-05 16:55:41

Once again, Scott prevails

Okay- to sum it up, the movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The music was good even though I'm not into techno, and the acting could have been worse. I agree wiht Suz's review for the most part (I know her from her site and an e-group) and I think she basiclly said everything I wanted to. Anamika is almost ignorant in the ways of karma, exploration, self-exspression and anything else that has to do with that. I myself am into metapsychics, and think that they should have backed off when it got there. Thankfully though, they didn't focus on it. James Marshall was interestingly good as T.J. BUT the hands he used were obviously fake and you could tell during the rather stupid rave scene it was either not him or he just put metal plates on his hands. Simeon's character was funny;he had the best lines and the most rave-ish attitude, but Scott looked somehow out of place in this movie. (For those of you who don't know, Scott is Scott Cohen, my fave actor who was in 'Gia' '10th Kingdom' and playes Dec. Denby on 'NYPD Blue.' -It's a guest role.-) If anything, Scott is the most likeable character, and is in the best scenes. If you see this movie, do it for Scott or to laugh during the whole thing because even at 2 am, this movie sucked worst then a high school drama club, 2 week rehersal play.

Hip Bohemians meet High Techno

The star of this movie had a bad day, and then it got worse. Up and coming musician (James Marshall) loses his reason for living, and his girl, when he can't play music any more. Adrift, he drops out of life and washes up in a skid row as a homeless alcoholic bum. The young bohemian types who occupy his adopted landscape are involved in the very hip techno rave dance club scene. Christina Applegate's Anamika takes him home like a lost puppy, against her better judgment, and her friends are barely fazed by her bringing a boozy, dirty homeless guy into her home. At least she has the presence of mind to kick him out when the scorpion stings her. But wait, her forgiveness is infinite, and soon he's back in her good graces when he endeavors to clean himself up for her. Back in her wacky building, the artists include a young, cool, metal-welding landlady, a techno musician who plays at the local hot club, and a nerdy computer geek with some mega amplification ideas. They come together to pool their talents, and like Dr. Frankenstein, a new musical techno creature is born. They go on tour, fall in love, find success, and get revenge. Scott Cohen is particularly enjoyable as the bouncy techno musician, who creates wild ambiance adventures with his techno synthesizer piano. His character exudes joyful artistic energy, all the while he is the dude from upstairs who frenetically empties your fridge with mounds of pasta on his plate. The other actors played it mostly one-note... James Marshall didn't really evolve much beyond the hurt wimpering puppy he started with, so it was really hard to see why Anamika would really be into him after he wrote her only one song. Well, I guess any girl will do ya if you write a song for her. I probably would. That's pretty darn romantic.Other than that, the evil concert promoter salaciously comes on to Anamika, and has no redeeming qualities. The nerdy geek builds magical robotic hands driven by a digital recorder, and somehow isn't already working at Sony. And of course, never ever has a date, even when the techno musician has 3 or 4 to spare. It's light and fun, very decent for early film work of Applegate and Cohen.

A very mixed bag - but worth the effort for one thing

This film can best be summed up with a simple two-word phrase:Nice try.Allow me to explain.SPOILERS AHEAD! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW, DON'T READ!TJ (James Marshall) is on his way to becoming a well-established and well-known musician, his specialties being the keyboard and the guitar. He and his band have begun to get the recognition they have worked so hard for, and the future looks bright.Viewers note: when the future starts to look bright or in the smallest bit rosy, you can guarantee something bad is about to happen.Something bad happens.Bet you didn't see that coming.Late for a performance after canoodling with his girlfriend (Paige Turco, later to turn up on `American Gothic' and `NYPD Blue'), he unfortunately gets involved in an incident with a gang of thugs that ends up with TJ losing both his hands.Needless to say, TJ is incredibly upset, not knowing how to go on without being able to express his `talents'. After his girlfriend freezes up when he touches her with his new artificial hands, he leaves home.Finding himself in the city he lives on the streets, spending most of his time drunk and trying to clean car windows. One afternoon he crawls into a building and snoozes, until loud music wakes him. It seems that at night the building turns into the setting for a rave, and TJ has found himself smack bang in the middle of one.Enter Anamika (Christina Applegate). Her real name is Marie or something, but I guess Anamika is easier to say...Seeing TJ is clearly not sure of what's going on, she leads him outside to get some air...eventually, through a whole pile of incidents I'm not going to get into (yes, it was boring and tedious and this review will end up the same way), he moves in with her so he can dry out and no longer be dependant on alcohol. It's here where we meet the people who live in the same building as Anamika:Zina (Faye Grant): The landlady, who despite - or because of - her defensiveness, seems to have a thing for Simeon. Also has a thing for metal and performance art.Geek/Leonard (some guy): A geek - computer whiz, technological whiz, glasses, always wears a white shirt. A computing cliché.Simeon (Scott Cohen, who incidentally also turns up on NYPD Blue before this film as one character, and after it as another, but is best known as Wolf from `The 10th Kingdom'): The ladies man with a heart of gold. A new girl every day but that's why they love him ("He's a tramp, but they love him..."), and he protects and sticks up for his friends.I describe this at the top as `worth the effort for one thing'; Scott Cohen is the one thing. For all the films good intentions - the fact that life is worth living after disability, true love can happen anywhere - there's an itty, bitty, little problem. It sucks. If James Marshall gets any less expressive, he'll fall into a coma. His hairdo is straight out of the 80's (even after he has it cut). The metal hands made for him are so OBVIOUSLY too big and clumsy for him to play the keyboard with the required accuracy. Christina Applegate's character believes in karma, in spirituality - that's fine. But I know people who also believe in those things and not a single one of them speaks the way she does - as if her head were stuck up something unpleasant because she's so full of herself. But it's not all bad news. The actor who plays Geek is actually quite good, as is TJ's girlfriend, effectively showing her unintentional reaction to his hands. Faye Grant is great as Zina, and then, of course, we come to Mr Scott Cohen.Ah, thank heavens. I make no secret of my admiration for Mr Cohen's work, and I'll continue to make it no secret right now.Simeon is...probably best described as an intelligent Joey from `Friends'. Or, a ruder version of Wolf from `The 10th Kingdom'.In fact, Simeon is startlingly close in characterisation to Wolf. Energetic, enthusiastic, acting on his impulses as often as he can, but also fiercely protective of those he loves. The big difference? Wolf is saving himself for the right woman. Simeon finds the right woman - or more - every day.Personally, I think the right woman for Simeon would be Zina. The chemistry and dialogue between them is terrific, and that goodbye kiss was very revealing. Not that I spend that much time thinking about it.Really.Or it could just be that I'm an obsessive compulsive with a Scott Cohen fixation.Either way, he's the reason the film gets three stars. I do want to give it five, but the bulk of it just drags the score right down.Piece of advice: just watch Simeon's scenes. Cute, charming, funny, best lines, nice guy. If you do decide to watch the whole thing, watch it with a group of friends and make fun of it. Believe me, it's VERY entertaining.Rounding up...let's return to the beginning...nice try, but as they say, no cigar. And I'm convinced that absolutely no one involved with the movie has EVER been to a rave. But what do I know?

sk8erlamb13 2012-04-26 21:58:12

horrible

this is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. i love christinaapplegate. she's my favorite actress in the whole world, but she's theonlyreason i didn't turn this off in the first five minutes. it's so corny,it'snot even funny. i reccomend only watching it if you are a big christinafan.i give this a 2 out of 10.

Vibrations w/Christina Applegate

I seen this movie on Showtime and it blew me away. Christina Applegate is really underrated as an actress. She gives a phenomenol performance. The story line is fantastic and it's a movie that makes you think about life and your place in it. I highly recommend it and I hope it comes out on VHS again or DVD to buy.

2012-04-24 17:07:27

Best watched under the influence of Cheez Whiz.

This is the best film ever made about someone losing their hands, becoming a N.Y.C. wino and then an underground music sensation. It has it's toe on the pulse of the Electronica-Rave-Drum&Bass (or whatever you crazy kids arecalling it this week) Scene. I've been known to watch this as manyas three times in one day. If you think films like "Showgirls","Horror Of Party Beach" or "Ishtar" are Art then this is foryou.

maldonaa 2012-04-24 10:05:39

Excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is the best movie I've ever seen. It rocks. I think TJ's acting issupreme and Cyberstorm's raves are worth listening. I wish he couldplay with Moby and FatBoy Slim. If Cyb gloves were available in ebay Iwould shop them at a glance. The movie was so important to me becauseIt tells the story of good over evil. At last disabled people can maketheir own rave-party performances with a lot of fans. I have a T-shirtwith the movie poster on it and I use it everyday. I think it is asvery good movie because you can laugh and cry all in the same movie, just as Ana from the Hill Series. Last Halloween I made a custom justas TJ's and went clubbing with it, and everybody was just rising theirhands just like me.
