This psychological dramatic thriller set in New York City is about one man on a journey to find himself. Derrick, a 27 year-old corporate lawyer with a large trust fund, enters the polar opposite world of Zane, a hapless criminal and an aspiring musician. Although the two have never met, and never will, the lives of Derrick and Zane are more connected than either one could ever imagine. One morning the privileged Derrick wakes up in a different apartment, in bed with a woman he has never seen before. Its clear that she knows him, but she calls him Zane. And so does everybody else. From that moment on, Derrick finds himself living Zanes criminal life, where individuals strangely resemble those in his real life A man he shoots in self defense in this new world resembles his former psychiatrist Lucy, a manager of an upscale jewelry store that he has been forced to rob is the embodiment of his former girlfriend, Olivia he takes as hostage a woman who is his mothers doppelganger, as well as the Sampson couple, Brian Sampson and Wendy Sampson. Meanwhile, Zane has also entered a parallel world and must now grapple with Derricks life. He is seduced by Derricks privileged world of money and power. As he begins to contend with Derricks demons, he yearns to return to and improve his own life, yet is completely powerless to do so. As Derrick and Zane make his way through the life of the other, each of them starts to reshape his new world and in so doing discover hidden strengths that neither knew he possessed.
Hollywood has made more than a few movies where two character somehowswap lives for a time and have to adjust. This is one of the best ofthe genre. The main characters who end up swapping lives are both 20's, male andhave lost their fathers. They differ by being on opposite sides of thelegal system, if not societal life altogether. Its almost like twouniverses only slightly different. Similar people in both doing similarthings, but the main character's lives couldn't be more different. Thebinding similarity between the two universes, was an oath a similarcharacter takes towards the main characters' respective fathers. Ofcourse the "action" universe, where he's in the midst of a verycriminal life, is flashier and gets more development, and rightfullyso. This story was just told so well. Its been polished and fine tuned andhas excellent pace. Just when you've about had it with a whiny mother, the character has too. Everyone was very realistic. There were somenice little details, all print and writing was backwards in the"action" universe, helping guide you through scenes. You have to watchcarefully to and absorb what is happening. Try predicting what's nextand you'll just be surprised, not by shock, but from genius. Theviolence is very limited, mostly ketchup on sweaters, no great carchases, just one car blowup. This is not Hollywood.Watch it again and you get more from it. The ending had a nicesurprise, but the movie didn't need saving by a big ending. How thismovie hasn't gotten more press is a shame. Everyone involved in thisproject deserves congratulations.
I saw this at Santa Barbara's film festival and was very surprised. Kindoflike Memento but in a way more fascinating. Not entirely sure it all madesense, but it could just be me. But, I AM sure that Sam Trammel is veryhotand has real star quality. FAscinating movie.
I'm always looking for interesting, well made Indie films that challenge the mind. Well this is the best one of the year. Undermind is a extremely well made, edgy, and interesting film. It challenges all audiences and proves that there are great, exciting young filmakers around. I throughly recommend this film.
life. The same person switches soul's with his Bizarro twin in a parallel world. One of them is a lawyer who hates his job and is pushed by his rich mommy to try harder. The other is a wannabe rockstar who has a drug dealer conman brother who wants the rockstar involved in his deals. The two switch souls and land in each ohter's bodies. From there the two use their own personalities to figure out the problems each individual has and fixes them.I usually hate movies where everything works out in the end, but since this film is so out there in the first place, the forulaic ending doesn't kill the film. Not great by any means but worth a watch if your looking for something different.
The alcoholic lawyer Derrick Hall (Sam Trammell) has his lifeabsolutely controlled by his possessive mother and is not able to givea step by himself. He likes his fiancée Lucy (Susan May Pratt), but hedoes not give a definition to their relationship, raising a family oftheir own. He is totally dissatisfied with his life, and wishes to turnit upside down before sleeping. On the next day, his life is swappedwith the criminal Zane Waye, and their lives and attitudes are totallyaltered with the exchange."Undermind" is a promising and intriguing story, but not well resolved. There is no explanation for the swapping of lives between Derrick andZane. The collision of the colorful world of Derrick Hall, and theblack and white reversed world of Zane Waye, with points of contact, isvery interesting and original. I intend to see this movie again in thefuture, to see if I miss some clarification along the confused story. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Sem Consciência" ("Without Conscience")
Nevil Dweck presents us with originality and a fine eye for detail, this movie is pure enjoyment.
Very good acting and a very good script. I'd say an excellent scriptexcept for one blaring omission...What triggered the switch? And thefact we were twenty minutes into the movie before the switch occurred. The switch should have occurred at least 3 minutes earlier and neededsomething to trigger it. Just happening isn't really acceptable inHollywood or Indiewood. It causes you to stop watching and enjoying andstart asking "what the heck's going on here" and it's not a what theheck in a good sense but a distracting sense. The trigger could havebeen as simple as a more heated debate with his mother, an overdose ona psychotropic drug, (he was seeing a shrink). The absence of causedrew as much attention as the presence of a clown selling jewelry wouldhave. It broke the moment, then it took several minutes to get backinto the movie.Other than that one oopses the rest of the movie was great. Theinterplay between the two realities was outstanding and the message"Walk a mile in my shoes" was very potent. The Violent world wasimplied and did not demand on an over abundance of death and mayhem toinstill a sense of danger. It worked very well. As did the limitednudity enough but not too much.Recommended viewing.
I saw this at the Stony Brook Film Festival on Long Island New York andwasgenerally pleased with it. It split first place in the Jury Awards thereand made a close run for Audience Choice as well.It takes two characters and basically switches them, giving each a glimpseinto the possibilities of parallel existances. Derrick,a spoiled uppercrust New Yorker, and Zane, a street thug, are quite opposite but somehowmake the mind switch and wind up making do in each other's lives. My mainproblem with the film was that there was no mechanism for the switch. It was nicely filmed and nicely acted with each of the personalities beinglikeable and despicable in appropriate doses. The filming of the dualityofparallel worlds was quite creative.
