The Brother Has Landed! Great Film, Great DVD!

Fans of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D., rejoice! The Brother Has Landed, with all the funky style you could ask for, and then some.I've been a huge fan of Undercover Brother (UB) since the day it came out in theaters, and I've been waiting, with quite literally bated breath, for it to come out on DVD. I'm happy to report that the DVD is very well done, with attractive, appropriately-designed menus (read: funky colors and fonts throughout), a great selection of deleted scenes and outtakes, voice-over feature commentaries by Eddie Griffin (UB) and director Malcolm Lee, a "The Making Of UB" feature, and even includes shorts from the original Internet-based cartoon series put out by UrbanEntertainment.com, which launched the film--a very nice touch! This is definitely not one of those skimpy, so-called "collector's editions" that sometimes get pushed out for niche films like these--this DVD is large, powerful, and packed with long-lasting pleasure that will satisfy you over and over again! I'm also quite pleased that it's available in widescreen format--it would've been a shame to have to watch a brother's style get cramped by pan & scan formatting (surely another one of The Man's evil conspiracies!)So drop your guava-mango-broccoli smoothie and get your patootie on down to that "Add To Shopping Cart" button--this DVD doesn't need any hot sauce to be palatable. And remember--don't eat the mayo.

uhh, very bad movie

OK, if you have nothing else to see and it is an afternoon you want towaste, here is the movie for you to see. Or better yet see something else. I sawa free screening for this film, and walked out feeling that they could havetaken something from me. If you want to se the film and be surprised atallplease miss the trailer, close your eyes and shut your ears. All but a fewparts of the film that are funny are in the trailer. If you have seen thetrailer it is almost funny to see the film, and how there are clips frm thelast 5 min of the film! This movie so obviously wants to become AustinPowers. It is like the little kid wanting to play with the big kids, wellthis time I hope the big kids don't give them a shot.

Admit It, You Liked It

This movie was one of the funniest I've seen in a long time. I'm ashamed to say it, but I really liked this movie, and I think almost everyone else did, too. You have to give this movie some credit for simply not being terrible, but it's a great movie in its own right. Eddie Griffin is awesome as the soul power superhero and Chris Kattan is hilarious as a bad guy with the secret ambition to be a brotha. Denise Richards is very funny and all the characters are very good and play off each other well. I really liked this movie and chances are, you will too.

Deliberately stupid and very funny movie

In the 80s there was a film called "i'm gonna get you sucka" about ablack gang led by keenan ivory wayans who bring down a white companyrun by Mr. Big played by john vernon. It was hilarious and "undercoverbrother" is the same type of movie and equally funny. Whitey hasmind-controlled a black general modeled on colin powell, and turned himaway from running for president. Instead they have him shill for afried chicken restaurant that has mind control drugs in theirchicken.!! Whitey wants to turn blacks into slaves and the BROTHERHOODled by our hero UC, is out to stop them. Among the choice bits ofsilliness is when smart brother develops a vaccine against the drugsbut says they can't use it cause it only works on one person at atime!!! Now how can a vaccine only work on one person at a time?HAHAHA. I give this movie a B+.

The one-liners are clever enough and the physical comedy and pop-culture goofing sufficiently dumb and broad to make Undercover Brother ... a reasonably pleasant experience.

DJAkin 2012-05-05 16:03:10

This movie is SOLID!!

I enjoyed this movie. The best part was actually at the beginning when theUndercover Brother was in his GOLD caddy and appearing to lose control of it(spinning out etc). Yet, he had a BIG GULP in his hand filled with orangesoda and was SUPER in control the entire time. Haha. I laughed at thatscene!!! Chris Kitan was funny also.

A fun movie with an awesome soundtrack

"Undercover Brother" to me, was like a Black Austin Powers..It had that same brand of humor, and like AP, was a spoof film. I laughed a lot in this movie, and many of the comedies from 2002 didn't even make me crack a smile. This was fun, and I love the soundtrack!! Great 70's music here! "Play that funky music", "Jungle boogie", "car wash"(stick around at the end for this one), "Brickhouse"....just to name a few. I recommend this for a rental. It had some good laughs, and I had a good time watching it and listening to that funky music.

Not for one moment does it get serious or stop for a straight action sequence, and yet it develops into something genuinely exciting, just through the enthusiastic velocity of its streams of jokes and images.

Love it

This review is from: Undercover Brother (Widescreen Collector's Edition) (DVD) A hilarious take-off on TV shows and movies such as Get Smart and James Bond. The more times I watch it, the funnier it gets.

DVD Deleted Scenes - The Cab/Hot Dog Vendor Scene

Its a shame that a good chunk of the movie ended up on the cutting room floor. I was happy at least to see they ended up on the DVD at least. Some of these scenes were pretty good - not sure why they didn't end up in the film.My favorite was the "Black Man Can't Get A Cab" scene. I thought everyone in this scene rocked, and anyone I know who has seen it laughed their arses off.Why was so much cut out of the movie anyway? The film itself seemed a bit uneven at times when I first saw it... Now I guess I see why. Its too bad... The final cut was less than 90 minutes :PIf you're a fan of the movie, buy the DVD for all dem bonus features. The disc is nicely loaded :)

Stephen Himes 2012-04-25 18:39:45

Very funny, but did Colin Powell really deserve this?

Dennis 2012-04-20 02:32:33

Funny, funny, funny! I cried I laughed so hard!

This is truly a comedy. If you like "sophisticated" humor then don'tbother. This show is like the old "In Living Color" show. They poke funateverybody, black and white. It also has a good dose of making fun of the70's along with a bit of slapstick. I loved it! All that I can say is:"Thanks Brother. You got soul!" :)

Occasionally funny but really just enforces racial stereotypes (which can't be a good thing)

With the high point of black culture coming in the 70's something has gonewrong up to the turn of the century and it has been diluted. Thisdilutionhas been caused by the manipulations of `The Man', a sinister white manwhois dedicated to bringing it down. When a black General decides to run forPresident, The Man uses a mind control substance to convince him to open afried chicken chain instead. When even an organisation that protectsblackculture (The Brotherhood) fails to prevent this they turn to the one manwhois funky enough to overcome the whites and protect the black culture -Undercover Brother.I really don't know what to say about black cinema anymore. On one handyouhave Spike Lee just releasing one of his best films for a few years but onthe other you have comedies such as National Security and Barbershop whichseem to revel in enforcing racial stereotypes. This is another one of thelatter although it is at least a little funnier than the others Imentioned. Here it is more affectionate than outright racist but it still enforcestheold stereotypes of black men lusting after white women, black peoplelovingfried chicken, black men smoking weed, white culture being uptight etcetc.it never really ends. The only possible saving point would be if it was hilarious and sadly itisn't. It is very hit and miss and comes out more miss than hit. It isoccasionally funny mostly it is sort of half amusing at best. The onlygoodstereotype that the film hammers home is the one that men find womenfighting sexy! There is a nice little spoof cat fight that both satisfiesthose with this idea as well as mocking them! The actual plot is pointless to discuss and barely matters among all therace clichés and crude jokes. It still amazes me that these films can getaway with making racial generalisations (when Undercover Brother goeswhitehe is tested by being asked questions about the series `Friends'!) but Iguess that racism only cuts one way. I wasn't offended by the jokes but Idid wonder why these type of films keep getting made - is it because thereare no better ideas that anyone wants to put to this market? The cast are average which is about right for the material. Griffin isstrangely the least memorable one of the cast considering he is the titlecharacter. Denise Richards is sexy but should never have allowed herselftobecome such an offensive cliché - `the white girl lusting after blackmen';I wonder how many interracial couples (or all sorts) found it offensivethatthis was portrayed in this way. Ellis is sexy but underused (even thefilmprefers Richards to her!) although her short catfight was the high pointforme (it seems that no-one has problem with mixed relationships when theyarelesbian!) The support cast is full of people just mugging their waythrough- Chappelle had a few good lines but to see an actor of Billy Dee Williamsinfluence be dragged into this type of thing is just embarrassing.Overall this has a few funny moments but the majority of the jokes arebuilton race. It is a shame that a secret agent spoof film can't get past theissue of race - when they do the result is Austin Powers or The Man FromUncle, when they can't you get something like this.

reverse rascim at its finest

what one person thinks is a funny flick another is offened by. If a movie like this was made putting white culture over black culture it would be called blacksploitation. I was thoughly disgusted.

One of the most hilarious films in years

I don't watch a lot of comedies because most seem not at all funny tome. Admittedly I'm not looking out for those films with a lot ofinterest in seeing them. I didn't think I'd ever see somethingapproaching the hilarity of "Office Space" ever again until I stumbledacross this film one night. I could tell in one or two minutes it wasgoing to be funny. I was not disappointed. The humor seem to have grew throughout the film. The power of thiscomedy is its entire 'staying power', and with only a few exceptions itbuilds at the beginning and never lets up. Brilliantly done spoof thatmanages to strike the perfect tone of balance throughout by thecharacters ever outrageous pokes at stereotypes of all kinds, thesexuality of black men, especially with white women, is laughed at inall kinds of ridiculous and over the top angles, mixing in the tokenlook of Uncle Tom in a white mans business world to the alter ego ofEddie Griffin, the title character of the movie. Dave Chappelle isfantastic, continually spoofing the angry black man with a conspiracyproblem and a weed problem, never quite in on whats the subject butalways funny.Billie Dee Williams character was great too and a unforgiving and harshjab at Ret. Gen. Colin Powell, a military man who held real credentialsuntil his one blemish, going to the UN with news he probably didn'tbelieve (note: my opinion) I also do not know if a feeling ofresentment by the black community was real or, like much of this film, just imagined and spoofed in this comparison of these two, as 'Gen.Boutwell' turns into a 'down on the farm' character in black face, dancing at the behest of the white world for profit and inclusion inthe all white club. But, of course, its out of 'his control', so he is not reallyresponsible for it. If there is a deeper message, its hidden, but I doknow it's its a most clever skewering of someone. And that's a realpoint of the film is how to read it, how far the director is going, andwhat other stereotypes will be exploded in the viewers face.Whether its 'representing or just pretending' in a way, whether real, imagined, or hilariously spoofed, its all funny. Some spoofs are veryartful and accurate in their intent and the complexities of thesurroundings are always just as in tune with being over the top as thespirited performances of the cast. "Mr. Feather" was carried out with hilarity, and was right in line withthe outrageous nature of everyone else. (Funny dance scene.) NeilPatrick Harris and Denise Richards (who was maybe featured more thanshe should have) were both good as well, and it struck just the rightbalance throughout this laugh fest of all their roles together with therest of the cast. It stayed funny till its very end. Fantastic job goesout to John Ridley and Malcolm D. Lee on this one.

funniest movie

This review is from: Undercover Brother (Widescreen Collector's Edition) (DVD) This movie was very entertaining for the entire family. My boys are 10 and 13, probably too young to watch but they loved it also.

It's no Austin Powers

This movie was an attempt to copy the Austin Powers formula, butcombine it with addressing other real issues in a fun and humorousmanner. If you mind stupid humor, this does not match up to the morefluent Austin Powers (I haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd one, so I can'tcompare them to this movie.) In Austin Powers, even though some thingswere stupid, the humor was fresh, catchier, and the movie's plot justflowed more. Austin Powers kept it simple with good vs. evil.Undercover Brother addresses race, but the humor is misleading enoughthat one may easily think there is some racism involved. Little thingslike how they used the N word between two people- considering the issuethis movie was tackling, it would've been good to have it shown betweentwo different races as well. It is true that taking jokes too far couldmake the movie seem too cruel for its own good, but from a critic'seye, not as substantial or effective as a movie to stand on its own. Some of the humor in this movie is too random. It doesn't seem torelate the movie's plot itself. This is synonymous with totally randomand unrelated clips placed in some Indian movies. It's more of anIndian trademark, and Undercover Brother does not make fun of thisissue, but rather they are trying to embrace this characteristic ifanything. Such as the business when there is a shower which just popsout of nowhere conveniently to make a funny scene. It is funny, butvery random.A few humor comments to note: The chicken provides the most funny partsof the movie. Take that Colonel Sanders!! Also, they should've had NeilPatrick Harris say "White Castle" instead of "Taco Bell," that would'vebeen a bit funnier, except that Undercover Brother was made beforeHarold and Kumar go to White Castle.

There are some hilarious bits in Undercover Brother, but there are far more which are flat, dull and crass.

bactuz 2012-04-03 00:42:32

Bad bad bad movie....

Not funny, not..... no nothing actually. If possible avoid this movie at almost any cost. Your time is clearlyworthmore than this movie.Seriously one of the dullest movies I have ever seen.
