Twin Town

Twin Town opens with wide sweeping shots of seaside Swansea to be the place of action for the next one and a half hours. The serene setting with miles upon miles of old semi-detached housing is suddenly cleaved apart by two young lads tearing through the neighbourhood in a two tone BMW 525. Julian and Jeremy are in deep trouble. Their dysfunctional family scrapes together a living from their dole money and odd-jobs offered to their father. The boys have long since turned to drug abuse and car theft leading a happy-go-lucky life in downtown no-hoper city. In due course the plot thickens as the boys are out for revenge against wealthy club owner Bryn who is not particularly helpful in providing compensation when their father is hit by an accident when working on his premises. The boys are fairly imaginative when it comes to planning their strike, culminating in scenes which all dog-haters and karaoke loathers will love.

Ace

Absolutely amasing, as I'm from Wales myself I could appreciate thehumour, others outside outside of Wales may not. If you're up for a good laughandhave an open mind this film is there. This is the Welsh version of otherclassics such as Trainspotting and Lock Stock

A GEM - the unpolished Black Opal of the film industry...

Very very funny.A sleeper hiding in the dusty back shelves of the video store, that I tookout one night with curiosity and no expectations. I'm three-quartersEnglish, a quarter Welsh and have spent a long time in Australia, but Idon't think it was just the Welsh part of me that enjoyed this movie.I loved its roughness, its quirkiness, its lack of perfection and itsreality and sure! some of the characters were grubby, superficial and lessthan enervating. This is a loosely woven picture of reality in an under-privileged urbanenvironment with all the mundanity, idiocy, drama, violence, beauty andhumour of everyday life that eddies around us, and in this instance, theLewis twins. There are a couple of truly hilarious scenes that very fewactors could emulate, but the twins in the movie are twins in real life andit flows naturally.Revenge escalates inevitably beyond the frivolous into the 'deadly' seriouswith a speed and abandonment that has you gasping. But unlike some moviesthat lose it at the end, this one magically gathers in all the loose threadsand delivers a finale of epic proportions that elegantly spans the coldlyruthless and the vauntingly sublime and leaves you with a sense of deepjustice.GREAT. This is the sort of stuff the Americans don't do very often or verywell, and mostly misunderstand when someone else does it properly. This wasdone properly.Reviewers disappointed by an inevitable comparison with Trainspottingobviously missed a lot of the subtle stuff in both movies that is exclusiveto the towns, times and cultures they portray. They got sidetracked by the'big' issues ....Shelve your preconceptions, grab the remote and replay all those bits thatare hard to catch if your ear isn't tuned to the accent. Sure it helps ifbad language doesn't get in the way of enjoyment, but let's face it, youshould be used to those Anglo-Saxon and Gaelic words by now - so if you canhandle it, this one's a delight - but it'll never be mainstream.

Not only Rhys that did well after Twin Town

Dougray Scott has appeared in over a dozen movies since Twin Town, includingDeep Impact, Enigma and of course MI2.It is often said that you have to be from Swansea to truly enjoy thisfilm, and while this is probably the case, friends of mine from all parts of theUK seem to enjoy it for the fun film that it is.The most memorable quote from the film for me:"Here's twenty quid, now go and buy yourselves a nice big pot of stickysticky and f*** off back to noddyland"

Wholly Depraved and Derilict and Wickedly Funny!

Rhys Iffyns (recently of Notting Hill) co-stars as half of wayward botherly duo intent on wreaking small time havoc in their native Swansea. When inept and crooked cops cross paths with them and disrupt their already disrupted lives the gloves come off. Sheer madness!

The worst thing about "Twin Town" was that it was marketed as the 'Welsh "Trainspotting"'

Not because the film's crap, because it isn't; but because audiencesexpected a Welsh "Trainspotting", and "Twin Town" isn't that. I amcurrentlywriting an AS Film Studies essay on whether or not marketing the film insuch a manner is "a fair way to approach the film critically or is 'TwinTown' different from it's Scottish comparison?' An the answer is, no itisn't a fair way to approach the film.'Twin Town' is about revenge, not heroin addicts. Although the twins usecannabis as a betting device, and Cantona finds Terry and Bryn's coke stashin a lifejacket in the Cartwright's boat, the film isn't about drugs. It isa BLACK comedy about two supposedly good-for-nowt brothers getting theirownback on those who wrong them. They go about it an a VERY dark way, andbecause there is no real justification for what Fatty's boys do, other thanpayback, the film was panned. 'Trainspotting' offers a glimmer of hope atthe end, 'Twin Town' does not. The only scene I consider reminiscent of'Trainspotting' is the scene where the twins p*** all over Bonnie and aruckensues. It reminds me of the bit in 'Trainspotting' where Begbie drops theglass in the bar whatever and it all kicks off. If 'Twin Town' had beenreleased first, would 'Trainspotting' be the Scottish 'Twin Town'? Thisfilm is ace, brilliant cast, and Kevin Allen's documentary style of filmingis brilliant. He truly achieves what he wanted in that the film lays torestWelsh stereotypes which are 'a puke-inducing disgrace - an insult to youthculture' Go and watch it

A comic gem

Quite simply, this is the funniest and most quoted movie we've everseen, and remains an absolute must see. "Cup of tea boys..." While onthe first run through, it might seem like a swear-fest, this is a moviewhich deserves to be watched time and time again. For one reason oranother , Twin Town avoided mainstream success, and yet at the sametime developed a cult following, which, to this day remainsunderground. Understandably, this would have never been a film to makebig box office bucks, but I assume that was never the intention.Written as sharply as todays modern sit-coms, and far sharper than mostrecent films, it remains understated and extremely dark at times, whilestill managing to make you laugh out loud repeatably and rewind towatch again. The last few scenes, a testament to the confidence of thewriters, are some of the best. My only hope is that we get to see moreof the not-so-famous actors that appear throughout, those that playGreyo, Adie and Dai etc, because without their contribution, the moviewouldn't have been so complete. Keith Allen should be placed high upona pedestal, and pestered continually until he agrees to write again, beit Welsh or not. "You reckon this boat'll get us to Morocco...".

Positively the worst film I've ever seen.

Incoherent, stupid and derivative, this was positively theworstfilm I've ever seen. Badly acted, horribly pretentious and narrativelyinept, it felt like it ran for hours. Don't waste your time or money on thisclueless, charmless and pointless waste of celluloid. No redeeming valuewhatsoever.

this is a welsch flick!

its all welsch.theres these two poor twin brothers who spend thier days getting high and causing very cruel and unusual things to happen.2 cops get very mad about thier exploits and hunt them down.its not for kids.theres a lot of drug use and some nudity.theres even very nasty things the twins do.theres no other movie quite like it.maybe a bio dome meets james dean type deal.theres one particuraly nasty part where the twins pee in a chicks hair while shes singing karaoke.theres a chick.maybe thier sister who gets naked during one part.shes not hot but boobies are good!the 2 cops are very obnoxious.the last 15 to 20 minutes are very funny i think.theres a scene involving magic mushrooms that got me rolling.its a cool movie!

Ugly and pointless...

I saw this film on the Sundance Channel. The opening credits featured a rather lushly produced song that was more in line with the 1960's than the 1990's, when this film was made and took place. So, I says to myself, they're probably being "ironic" (or a smug smart a--, which is what they really are), then the credits read that the executive producers were none other than Andrew MacDonald and Danny Boyle, the brains behind Shallow Grave (a smarmy, wretched piece of work) and Trainspotting (which was better, but still had some of that 90's smugness to it, but it had several good moments). The film is on the level of a "Tarantino goes to Wales". F-words abound, which is fine if there's some creativity behind it. There isn't. This is an ugly, nasty film that enjoys being nasty and ugly. It's really lame. The accents will probably be unintelligible to American ears, but my ears have always been able to decipher thick British/Welsh/Irish accents for some reason. The film gets 2 stars because I like looking at Wales.

Trainspotting, Part II?

A great comedy. And don't forget to turn the caption on...A nice transition from Scotland to Wales... But I'd still consider this to be a good sequel to Trainspotting. That one was about an addict who actually decided to go back to the "normal life" as defined by the society. This one is about addicts who love their lives with nice ironies about definition of morality.

Thomas Hadland 2012-04-24 17:15:52

this is a good film, and welsh to boot!

Twin Town cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Trainspotting, simplybecause it is a completely different film, the fact that they are both setin squalid urban surroundings and involve drugs is incidental. Twin Town isbasically a sequence of revenge acts between two groups of people linked inall sorts of ways. The Twins to whom the title refers might as well becardboard cutouts, for the lack of personalities, but you find yourselfsympathetic with them despite their debauchery. Likewise the death of theLewis family (minus the sons) is a very sad moment, despite the fact thatthey have been portrayed so shallowly. This is the success of the film, theway it manipulates your emotions to leave you genuinely shaken by theviolence in the events leading up to the climax, whereas the opening of thefilm leads you to expect a light-hearted farce. Watching it again it is easyto divide the film into two sections, but very difficult to pin down wherethe change of pace and mood begins. The humour and irony is superb, particularly the razor sharp sarcasm of Adie. Although a very seedy picture of Wales is presented, this presents avery positive view of the people of Swansea and manages not to beanti-English in the slightest despite the obvious nationalistic feel. Theacting is great, and as long as you aren`t expecting anything likeTrainspotting and you let the humour wash over you you`ll enjoy this.

Very Good

It's quite nice to see how good this film is when you think about it. A lotof people don't really know much about Welsh films and to be honest it'sbecause there isn't that many unless there are in welsh language. BeforeDougrary Scott starred in Mission Impossible 2 and Ripley's game there wasTwin Town and the same goes for Rhys Ifans who stole most of the limelighton Notting Hill as the mad masturbating Welshman Spike but it all startedhere with Kevin Allen's Twin Town. A hard look at Swansea life through somany different characters who you forget who is who after the first halfhour but what a bunch of characters they are. Most of them actually putWales to shame but with a funny twist of humour and violence. This camehot on the heels of Trainspotting and had a lot to look up to but I thinkthis just as good as Trainspotting. It starts off well enough and keepsgoing throughout without it letting up for a second till the end credits. Even though there are some ruthless people in this you can't help but fallin love with them especially Terry played by Dougrary Scoot who is just socomic as a hard cop bully who thinks he is the man but is actually veryaccident prone at most times and that's what makes him great amongst otherroles. This is a so much happening here and we should look at this for what it iswhich is a feel good film that starts you off straight away and doesn't letyou stop till the end credits.

Standing ovation

During my tenure as chief projectionist of the Commodore Cinema,Aberystwyth, the only film to have received a standing ovation on morethan one night for a week's screening. It's a university town so wehave a good mix of local punters, students and holiday people. I restmy case. The nineties was, on the whole, a good decade for cinema I think. Allwe seem to have had since then is a load of cgi filled soulless filmequivalent of a fast food outlet (Hancock?). Maybe it's just me gettingolder.I checked out the "hated it" rating for Twin Town tonight, and waspleasantly surprised to see only two negative reviews receiving twostars or less. Bloody hell. Some bugger's just nicked my car..............

Fanaticalaboutfilms Review: Twin Town

Twin Town follows the Lewis brothers also known as the the twins(Jeremy and Julian) played by Rhys Ifans and Llyr Ifans- also brothersin real life although only the former has gone on to forge a successfulcareer in the movies (Notting Hill, Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows: Part 1, The Amazing Spider-Man [2012]). Put simply they aredelinquent layabouts who are renowned locally for their compulsion tosteal cars, get into mischief and take as many tokes as they can fromall manner of homemade bongs- utilising everything from shower heads togolf clubs. They live on a caravan site overshadowed by the Swanseaindustrial works with their parents, sister and dog Cantona (named soafter a Welsh football player). The plot revolves around a series of confrontations that start asfrivolous but soon escalate to serious between the twins and the localbig crook as the twins feel their father, Fatty, has been wronged.Throw in bent copper Terry with delusions of grandeur played well byDougray Scott, a karaoke king, some cocaine and a poodle and you've gotyourselves the making of an intriguing movie. The movie unsurprisingly is riddled with Welsh references that somepeople may be unfamiliar with and understanding the lingo might take acouple of minutes if you have never heard a Welshman before but hang inthere as your patience will be rewarded. What I particularly like aboutthis movie is that its rough around the edges and very realistic as youcan imagine these types of people existing in the real world. It's also well known for containing its high usage of the word f'ksummed up brilliantly with the first line of the movie- "F'ing dead,f'ing dead as f'k". It is to Twin Town what alcohol is to Withnail AndI. As you can therefore imagine the script is not elegant and may notbe to everyone's liking but there is some good dialogue thrown in toget you laughing and the development of the plot is well thought outoccasionally throwing you in the wrong direction and leading to a wellconcluded climax.Twin Town is a unique dark comedy that's passed too many people by andthis needs to be rectified as it's a very good movie that has just theright amount of comedy, violence and in the Lewis brothers a couple ofcracking, if not slightly disturbing, characters that you end upgetting behind and really connecting with. For further reviews feel free to check out:http//www.fanaticalaboutfilms.com

When All Else Fails, Try Wales

I picked up this tape in the first place becuase I was drawn in by the clever trailer that preceeds "Fargo" on videotape. I also enjoy UK dialect pictures. While it can lag towards the end - it seems as though the director needed to tie up some ends quickly and creatively - this is a thoroughly enjoyable film. I have never seen a film jump from extreme to extreme so jarringly and yet effortlessly. The acting is very, very engaging - in particular, the two "bent coppers," played by Dorien Thomas (?) and Dougray Scott (soon to be hitting our shores as Wolverine in the X-Men film) and the almost psychotic Ifans (real life) twins. For a film that will make you laugh, honestly drop your jaw (I've proved this - there's one scene that will leave you agape), and occasionally make you say, "Nooooooo, way!" or perhaps, "Wha?" I cannot recommend this enough. It is certainly out there - but who wants to watch gritty reality as a form of escapism? You'll pee yourself laughing....

"From the creators of Trainspotting"... yeah... right!

The biggest gripe I had about this movie... besides that it really kind ofsucked... was that it claimed (on the poster, in the ads, etc.) to be fromthe creators of Trainspotting. Now, forgive me if I nit-pick, but IrvineWelsh 'created' Trainspotting, and he had NOTHING to do with this picture;neither, really did Danny Boyle or Andrew Macdonald. Which means I went tothis flick expecting some sort of spin off of Trainspotting (not a re-makeor a sequel or anything, but a movie with the flavor of Trainspotting)...which it wasn't. This isn't false advertising I'm claiming... but stupidadvertising! The by-line puts you into a specific mind-set (call mebrainwashed, if you must) and then the movie delivers something totallydifferent, unexpected, and stupid. What gives!? Why do that!?The movie is far too shallow. It isn't even deep enough to provide plotholes... it's just there, like a puddle; sure, maybe you want to jumparoundin it for a second, but I don't want to spend two hours standing in apuddle... at least not this one. There are moments of mild entertainment, but without anything cohesive, they're just not worth it. I didn't care at all about anyone anywhereremotely near this thing, and left just wondering who in the hell theselittle smart-asses thought they were.
