Another movie from the Star Wars era that's lost its zing

The incredibly high amount of positive reviews about this movie canonly mean one of two things. Every post is added by a Disney Corp patsytrying to promote the film, or the positive reviewers have so lowstandards that cognitive thought is no longer needed in cinema anymore. What happened to fun engaging action? Yeah sure there is 3D, mindblowing CGI (what sci-fi film doesn't) but why so much mind numbingdialogue? Was this a Quenten Tarantino movie I walked into or Matrixripoff? I expect if all reviewers saw the original like I did and thenwere asked to re-review then the results would be hugely different.Sorry Tron Legacy is not a sequel; it doesn't deserve to claim the fameof the original.

well,it looks nice and shiny but,

it just doesn't have the heart and soul the original had.there's noreal depth to it.i found it lacklustre and ordinary, almost boring.ialso thought the story was just not that exciting.the original Tron waswas something new and innovative, but this sequel didn't reallydistinguish itself from many other films of the genre.i think it was acase of waiting too long to do the sequel.it wasn't really worth thewait or the hype,in my opinion.don't get me wrong, the look of the filmis fantastic.but that isn't enough to make it a great film.the actingwas decent enough but nobody really stood out.i wouldn't call this anawful film, but it just wasn't anything special,in my opinion.forme,TRON: Legacy is a 5/10

Disapointing

This review is from: Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy in Identity Disc Collectible Packaging) (Blu-ray) As much as I loved the movie this collectors edition was not worth purchasing. It came with no blue ray cases or regular DVD cases. The Identity disk is smaller than I expected it to be and worse yet the Identity disk itself is the DVD case for all 4 of the disks (The digital copy only gets an external cardboard sleeve) To take the disks out of the case is nerve racking due to having to press the button and pull up on both ends of the disk one at a time where the fit is so snug that it causes the DVD to bend slightly. I have read some reviews after already opening mine seeing that people accidentally broke their disks trying to remove them from the case. They are also stacked on top of each other causing them to rub up against each other. The Disk itself looks pretty decent but the stand it rests on has a cheap feel to it due to the sticker placed on the front and back of the stand from the light bike scene. I would return this if I could however due to having opened the box already I would not be able to returned an opened movie. Overall I am displeased with this purchase.

Terrible Edition

This review is from: Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy in Identity Disc Collectible Packaging) (Blu-ray) The name of this set needs to be the terrible edition. The LED lights on the disc are a joke. I can not even tell they are on unless the room is pitch black. Unlike the picture of the product that shows is nice and illuminated. So if you decide to look past that, getting the disc out is a joke. They are all stacked on top of each other and are almost impossible to get out. I would stay away from this set as i am returning mine immediately and going to best buy to buy them individually.

Year's best Sci-Fi!

I was never a big fan of the old TRON movie, but TRON: Legacy was themost enjoyable science fiction movie I have seen since 2006's V ForVendetta. Good-looking and satisfying throughout, I was thoroughlyentertained by the world of the Grid, and I thought all the effects andmost of the story developments made eminent sense in that setting. Theyalso enhanced the old movie to a degree that makes it a greater classicthan before. I could list a lot of reasons that I felt this movieworked very well, but there were also a tiny few things thatdisappointed me. For instance, when Sam enters the Grid, we only seethe digitizing process from the point of view of the laser beam, andnot from an outside perspective, which cheats us of one of the mosticonic effects of the original movie. Also, the ending of the movie wasnot as exciting and interesting as it ought to have been. But, come tothink of it, I don't think I have any other complaints. Sam's charactermay not have been as charismatic as we could have wanted, but I enjoyedthat fact that he played a guy who had basically remained a teenagescrew-up far into his twenties.Kevin Flynn's character intrigued me a lot. He had become a prisoner ofhis own programs, particularly because he had designed CLU to create aperfect world, which CLU then did. Since the programming was imperfect,so was CLU's idea of perfection. Yet elsewhere in the Grid, Kevin'sprogramming had yielded the emergent self-aware lifeforms of the ISOs,which had free will and knowledge enough to transform the world. I lovethese ideas. The movie is catching some flak because of the Tron character's"random" change of allegiance towards the end. I didn't have a problemwith it for several reasons. First, Tron really only has a small rolein the movie, and by the time he changes his loyalty, it doesn't makethat much of a difference. Second, I don't think the change was random. This is a world of programs; everything that takes place must followrigid rules. If Tron changed allegiance, there must have been a reasonfor it, even if it didn't seem clear to us. That's how I rationalizeit, anyway.I loved the movie and will definitely be going for seconds. To me itwas clearly the year's best sci-fi movie, even ahead of Inception.10 stars out of 10.

Visually stunning with a good soundtrack

The highlight of Tron: Legacy (2010) is the soundtrack by Daft Punk. It's the main reason to watch this movie, in my opinion. This movie's visually stunning special effects take center stage. The movie can be hard to follow at first, but I think multiple viewings will help if you didn't fully understand the story the first time around. This movie is a sequel to the original Tron (1982). Both movies have state-of-the-art special effects for the time periods they were released.Usually one can expect wooden acting in a high tech science fiction movie of this type, but the acting, though a little wooden at times, is not bad overall. Jeff Bridges was made to look much younger (through computer enhancement) in this movie than he actually is. Overall, a pretty good movie that I recommend.

Not as good as it could have been

This review is from: Tron: Legacy (Amazon Instant Video) Overall the movie was ok, but it could have been better. Not surprisingly it was strongly influenced by the original which is fine, but the parts it did add seemed lackluster. The goofy nightclub scene nothing and some of the other new concepts in the movie (like the new race of programs) were glossed over. Its not bad, but its not great.

Better Than the First TRON But Still Bad

This sequel to TRON, TRON: Legacy, is better than the first TRON moviewhich I thought was just awful but this movie still is not worthseeing, I give it 3 out of 10 and was very disappointed with it eventhough I went in obviously expecting very little out of it. I am a JeffBridges fan and was really hoping this movie would be good but it justwas not.I like 3D movies in general but despite some good effects was boredthrough most of this movie and wishing it would just end. The firstmovie was from 1982 and the effects look stupid now but at the timethey were revolutionary and very mind blowing, I think obviously theonly reason that movie got any kind of cult following was for the leapforward in computer effects and not for the story because that moviewas just stupid. This is the first feature movie directed by Joseph Kosinski and it'shard to tell if this movie being so bad is his fault or just the badideas/script involved. In the movie basically Jeff Bridge's son gets amessage from him in the world of TRON where he is trapped and he getssucked into that world as well where he tries to help his dad.Bridges/Hedlund/Wilde acting wise were all fine the problem with themovie was just what a stupid story and concept the whole TRON ideawas/is.The 3D/2D stuff was pretty neat and a good idea but again the effectsbeing great did not make up for the story being so stupid for me.

SLOW

This review is from: Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Well the movie has been out since Tuesday, and today is Saturday and I still have not received it. This will be the last movie I pre-order from Amazon. All my friends have watched it as they went to Walmart or wherever to get it. Just can't believe that it's been 5 days and still no movie.

What a blockbuster movie should be

I was never a fan of the original Tron, but liked the trailer forLegacy so much, I wanted to give it a try. I was blown away. A trulystunning spectacle of visuals and sound. Between the production design, the sound fx, the amazing score, and the pure skill of story-telling,this movie reminded me of what a true blockbuster is. Science fictionis a rough genre' because it demands such a high suspension ofdisbelief. Not all massive budget fare can deliver. Movies likeTransformers or the Star Wars prequels proves that bigger is not alwaysbetter. A film needs consistency. It needs heart. You have to be suckedinto a world for 2 hours and stay contained in it's walls until thecredits roll. Tron: Legacy does this. It takes the very basic conflictsand never lets go. It hinges on a very simple and specific goal, andsees it through. It doesn't distract (other than beating you over thehead with some minimal PG rated exposition). It's a movie that neverforgets what it's meant to be. I enjoyed it very much.

Great package

This review is from: Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Tron was a fantastic movie when it came out. Here is the sequel which is also awesome. It is nice to have the assorted ways to watch the movie. I can watch it the big TV in the livingroom, the older TV in the bedroom and on my laptop. I was able to show the original to my son which I saw in the theater when it first came out.

Great

This review is from: Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I watched this movie in theaters and really liked it, so I decided to buy it once it came out. As a techno geek I want the best in technology without spending all my money. I was happy to find Tron: Legacy in blu-ray for so little money, and not only that but to also get the 3D version and a digital copy was a great win! And to add more it arrived in about 3 days.

A worthy sequel to the original Tron

Now this is one of those movies that isn't great when it comes to theplot all that much, but it's passable. And the visuals and the actionsequences are really well done. Now I didn't really like the original"Tron" cause almost everything about it seemed a bit outdated. But withthe fresh and amazing visuals and cool sequences makes this movie wellworth watching it in theaters, even in 3D. Now the premise is actuallysort of similar to the first "Tron" movie but a lot has been updatedgreatly. I really did enjoy this movie from beginning to end, with it'sdecent story and awesome visuals. So it's basically a worthy sequeldespite Kevin Flynn's unforgivable mistake for a genius. Anyways mostdefinitely a Disney film that kids and adults will enjoy. All in allit's a great theater going experience with amazing special effects, awesome music, cool visuals and action.7.8/10

Boasting some of the most dazzlingly stunning visuals you'll see this year, this sequel reinvents the Tron universe for an immersive and impressive spectacle

It's been a 28-year wait for fans of the sci-fi fantasy "Tron", the1982 original a costly flop when it was first released which eventuallyamassed a cult following for its gamer sensibility and breakthroughvisual effects. That following was enough for Disney to decide toinvest US$170m into this sequel, an aesthetically startling piece ofsleek, shimmering entertainment that more than lives up to the legacyof its predecessor. From the opening digital Disney logo, "Tron: Legacy" astounds with itsdazzling visuals courtesy of first-time director Joseph Kosinski andhis art direction team (led by Kevin Ishioka, who also worked on lastyear's Avatar). Kosinski and his team have taken the basic designtemplates of Steven Lisberger's original and applied the latestadvances in CGI technology to create a totally immersive experiencethat stays true to the look and feel of its predecessor while expandingit in scope and imagination. The modern-day Tron universe is a stormy, blacklit landscape withtowering skyscrapers and crystal highways drawn in electroluminescence. It is a world populated by programmes (basically, digital denizens ofTron) dressed in skintight glowing suits and carrying light discs astheir power source cum data bank, a world traversed by the use ofmotorcycles that streak mesmerising liquid-like ribbons of light. Everyframe of this CG environment is fascinating, and in geek-speak, beyondcool. Complementing the gorgeous visuals is the pulsating electronic score bydance-music duo Daft Punk, pumping unique verve and life into theaction and emotion in the film. The duo also make an appearance as thehouse DJs in the one-and-only futuristic nightclub sequence in themovie, led by Michael Sheen's OTT Bowie-esquire owner Zuse. Indeed,it's hard to overstate the visceral experience that Kosinski hasdetailed in his contemporary vision of Tron, right down from thestunning images to the virtuoso soundtrack. The perfect example of this fusion lies in the film's many exhilaratingaction sequences, and there are many, beginning with Sam Flynn'sinitiation into the Tron universe. That introduction consists of agladiatorial fight where Sam has to battle first with glowing Frisbeesand then atop the aerodynamic light-cycles, both of which also payhomage to perhaps the most memorable elements of the original. Thedistinct colour schemes (orange and red for the programmes; blue andwhite for the users or outsiders) add to the visually breathtakingnature of these sequences, choreographed by the same people behind 300and Ninja Assassin. The film aspires to be a virtual thrill ride, andit fulfils that ambition brilliantly. While "Tron: Legacy" rests comfortably on the laurels of the technicalachievements of its predecessor, it sits less easy on its predecessor'sfailings. One of the fairly levelled criticisms of the original "Tron"was the lack of a story; here, no less than three creditedscreenwriters have tried to compensate it with an overly convolutedstory. The father/son reunion narrative between Kevin and Sam plays outnicely enough, but the middle act of the film gets too bogged down bytech mambo-jambo that will likely fly over the heads of most viewers. That exposition really isn't necessary, since the result of it is astandard world-domination plot in the final act spearheaded by Kevin'snefarious 'programme' alter-ego Cru. Characters too are just as underwhelming as the original. Our hero Samis sketched too thinly as the son looking for a long-lost father; andhis romance with 'programme' warrior-chick Querra (Olivia Wilde) isgiven scant thought. But more baffling is the film's reduction of gamedesigner Kevin Flynn to Zen-master spouting incongruous surfer-dudeexclamations like 'radical, man!' and other equally clunky bits ofdialogue throughout the film. If these characters manage to resonate more than that of the original, that's because of the excellent father-son chemistry between JeffBridges and Garrett Hedlund. The duo emulate genuine warmth aside eachother, overcoming the script's shortcomings to make their charactersand the plot more convincing than the sum of the clichéd lines andmiddling plot of the film. Of course, these inadequacies shouldn't comeacross as a surprise to fans of the original. Indeed, for better and for worse, "Tron: Legacy" is an appropriatesequel to the 1982 film. Like that cult classic, it also boasts superbvisuals which, combined with a modern-day dance score andgroundbreaking special effects, create an instantly mesmerisingexperience for its viewers- despite similarly simplistic plot andcharacter development. Still, this is a wholly befitting sequel to thelegacy of "Tron", and will likely add a whole new legion of fans to itsfollowing.

Tron gets serious

Even after reading reviews, seeing all the trailers and looking atstills, I wasn't at all prepared for Tron: Legacy. Happily, most all ofthe negative reviews that I read didn't hold true for me. As a whole, Ithought the movie was an amazing achievement both technically andartistically. It's much darker both in tone and look than the originalfilm, but it has a bigger message as well. The story of Sam Flynn's search for his father reminded me a lot ofFinding Nemo. Tron: Legacy doesn't have nearly as much humor as Pixar'sfilm though; it holds to its much more serious tone. I really enjoyedthe "2D" setup during the beginning of the film. It didn't bother methat it was in 2D, just as it doesn't bother me that the beginning ofthe Wizard of Oz is sepia-toned. That lends the fantasy world much moreimpact. Plus, it's a reflection of how flat Sam feels his life is.After the loss of his father, Sam has become a sort of aimlesstroublemaker. He feels no sense of responsibility and an awful lot ofgrief. He has no way to come to terms with those feelings; his dad isgone and he feels sort of betrayed. Then along come old Alan Bradley telling him he got a page from hisdad's arcade. That sets off the series of incredible adventures thatfollow. My fear with Legacy was that it would approach the Grid as areal place instead of the whimsical fantasy of the first film. Theoriginal film was (and still is) a good popcorn movie, full of visualsplendor and improbable events, all taken with a light heart. Legacy though has a much more forlorn feeling, a sort of wise andsomber attitude that doesn't drag the film down but rather gives it aweight the original never had. The grid is no longer a challenging yetsomewhat benign place. It is a home to fear and death. Sam uses all hisstrength just to stay above that. The movie kept my interest from startto finish but I found myself desperately wanting a happy ending. Technically, the film exceeded my expectations. The costumes wereremarkable, far better looking than they seemed in the stills. The 3Deffect wasn't at all gimmicky but was definitely noticeable. And Ithought Clu (the young Jeff Bridges) was a phenomenal achievement andwill usher in a new era in cinema, for good or ill. I found therendering to be completely convincing. I also liked how I felt asimilar disorientation in Legacy that I felt when I saw the originalTron back in 1982. At times, I didn't quite know where I was and what Iwas looking at. That said, I was disappointed by the lack of colorthrough most of the scenes. It seemed to be primarily black and whitewith streaks of red or orange. The original film was bursting withvivid colors of every shade. But again, Legacy was showing a muchdarker world. The acting was uniformly good. Castor stands out because the role is soover-the-top, but none of the actors are weak. Unlike many others, Ithought the script was really good. There were some rather hokeyreferences to the first movie, and some moments of genuine homage. ButLegacy stands firmly on it's own. Like Nemo, it has a much deepermessage beneath it's surface -- one of maturity and responsibility, andof letting go of the past. The ending of Legacy is beautifullyrealized, just ambiguous enough to leave you wondering if what you justwitnessed was real or a fantasy. (My bet is on the latter.)My compliments to the entire production team. Kosinsky, Kitsis andHorowitz (inspired by Lisberger) have made a terrific sequel, one thatnot only pays homage to the original but also adds it's ownpsychological and emotional weight to the story. The soundtrack by DaftPunk is phenomenal. Overall, I recommend this movie. Like the original,I think that Legacy will be well-regarded many years from now. Whilenot as trend-setting as the original, it has it's own story to tell anddoes so expertly.

A Good Start

I have always loved the first movie, and am excited to see thefranchise revitalized. On the surface, this movie (stunning visualsaside) seems simple and predictable. Once you start thinking about theideas that it discusses, like computers calculating like nature toproduce beings, parallel universes that make a lot of sense, religionand digitally constructed things coming into reality, there is a lot toit. I don't think it is perfect or the best movie I've seen, but Iforgive it for several reasons. The first being that most of theaudiences haven't seen the first one, which is a huge hurdle. Thesecond being that it is the beginning of a new series. It's not easysetting up a universe, starting a new series and being a sequel all atthe same time. I look at the movie as a prologue to what will becomethe Tron universe. There are a few technical things like pacing and dialogue that drag themovie down. There isn't an excuse for that. And it is true that theplot could have been a little more engaging and a little lessstraightforward. But we can hope that all this improves as they expandthis brilliant series.

The only thing lacking is Jeff Bridges doesn't hand it to you in person.

This review is from: Tron: Legacy / Tron: The Original Classic (Five-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Geez, what doesn't this set come with. You get the blu-ray, You get the 3D blu-ray, you get extras, you get a dvd, you get the ORIGINAL TRON movie! ON BLU-RAY! granted this one didn't come with a light cycle or olivia wilde, but y'know thats what a front projector and freeze frame is for. For the price you get so much produt its fantastic and the video and audio quality is no-question-awesome! The question between downloads and blu-ray for me is always in the audio. DTS-Master Audio and Dolby Tru HD are always worth getting the discs. I have no problem recommending this combo to anyone.

One of the Best Movies to Date

This review is from: Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Hurray for something new. I am a big fan of movies. My wife and I spend a lot of our free time going to the theatre or renting DVDs. I was very glad to see something different. I loved Tron Legacy. The graphics were mind blowing and the plot was great, despite what alot of trolls say. How many movies about super-hereos and natural disasters is Holywood going to make. The movie I like to compare this to is Avatar. I liked Avatar, but I think the plot and the graphics were better on Tron Legacy. Avatar is a complete rip-off of Fern Gully, a kids cartoon. Some guy gets thrown into the world of magical forest people and has to learn their ways. Both movies have a magical Tree of Life that can't be cut down. Both portray white man as savages that want to destroy all forests for their own gain. Both films have the main characters transformed into the people that live in the forest. And both of the main characters fall in love with the princess. Bravo James Cameron on a complete copy. Tron, on the other hand is original and does a great job of corridinating a sequel 29 years later.(unlike Indiana Jones) The time line is perfect and the plot is great. Oh, and did I mention, the graphics were jaw-dropping for the entire two hours. I loved this movie and put it next to my favorites.(L.O.T.R. and Star Wars) One more thing - Stop bringing the rating of this film down because you dont like the collector's edition. These reviews are for the film and not your gay case that you probably spent too much money on. Learn how to use Amazon. If you have a seller complaint, LEAVE IT ON THE SELLER'S PROFILE. If you have a complaint on the case, write Disney, but please don't leave a bad review on Tron's review. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A FAN OF TRON LEGACY!Finally, the 3D effects are outstanding. My wife and I own the following movies in 3D Blu Ray: Alice in Wonderland, Bolt, Clash of the Titans, Despicable Me, The Last Airbender, Legend of the Gaurdians, Tangled, and finally Tron. Tron Legacy has the best 3D effects that I have ever seen or heard. Once in the Grid, th 3D completely immerses the veiwer in a very beautiful rich world of fantasy. The several different layers along with the detail makes the veiwer feel like they're part of the Grid. This is especially great on a LED TV, wich makes colors appear as if they glow. Not only the visuals are amazing, but the sound is unparalled. I run a 7.1 Polk Audio Surround and the sound effects are great. You literally feel like you are there. Plus the sound-track is superb. Perfect for a 1982 sequel. The CGI legacy continues!

'TRON: LEGACY': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five) Sequel to the 1982 cult classic Disney film 'TRON', one of the originalforays into CGI film-making (at least the most expansive at that time). The original film is a huge throwback to my childhood; it was releasedwhen I was 6 and it, and even more so the arcade game based on it, hada huge impact on popular culture at that time. The film was initiallyonly moderately successful at the box office (grossing just $33 millionon a $17 million budget, domestically) but it quickly grew inpopularity. DVD copies of the film are now rare and in strong demand, the cheapest used copy on Amazon is going for $65 and the film isunavailable for rent (At least on Netflix. I got my copy 5 years agofor $15).Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner both reprise their roles from theoriginal film (but no Cindy Morgan to many fans' disappointment). Thefilm was written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (two veteranwriters of 'LOST') along with first time writers Brian Klugman (anexperienced actor) and Lee Sternthal. It's directed by first timedirector Joseph Kosinski , who I've read oddly wasn't a fan of theoriginal film (he's also directing the remake to another Disney sci-ficult classic of the same era, 'THE BLACK HOLE'). The writer anddirector of the original film, Steven Lisberger, is a producer of thisfilm as well as makes a cameo appearance.Bridges once again plays genius video game developer Kevin Flynn (withthe help of CGI effects to make him look twenty years younger). As thefilm opens he's now running ENCOM and has a young son named Sam. He'sfurther exploring the inner digital world of the gaming system andtelling Sam of all his adventures. Suddenly he goes missing in the year1989. The movie flashes forward twenty years and now Sam (played byGarrett Hedlund) is the rebellious majority stockholder of his father'scompany and wants nothing to do with it, except to keep the currentgreedy CEO's from tarnishing his dad's legacy. One day after hisfather's partner Alan (Boxleitner) receives a mysterious page, comingfrom Kevin's old arcade, Sam goes investigating. He finds a hidden roomin the arcade and is sucked into the same digital game world his fatherhas been trapped in for twenty years. The world is filled with the samedeadly vehicles and gladiator games as that of the first film but thistime far more advanced. Sam finds his father and teams up with him, aswell as his young friend (played by the stunning Olivia Wilde). Thethree attempt to defeat the mad computer program controlling thedigital world, Clu (also played by Bridges), and return the Flyns tothe real world. The film, like the first, is full of revolutionary state of the artvisual effects. It's also one of only a handful of films that's beenfilmed in actual 3D and using more advanced 3D equipment than thegranddaddy of all 3D films' 'AVATAR' (although the 3D is not quite asimpressive, it's also only used while in the digital world). The storyis full of religious analogies and the parable of man playing God butit's the weakest part of the film. It's the action and visual effectsthat really make the film worthwhile. The acting isn't anything specialwith the exceptions of the always impressive Bridges (although this ishardly his most impressive work) and Michael Sheen in a scene stealingrole. The music by techno band 'Daft Punk' (who also have a cameo inthe film) is impressive and is one of the most memorable and fittingmovie scores of the year. Kosinski's direction is very promising andextremely impressive for a first film, I don't know where Disney foundthis guy but he was definitely the right man for the job! The action isexciting and surprisingly violent (how this got away with a PG ratingand something like 'SPIDER-MAN' gets slapped with a PG-13 I'll neverunderstand). Like I said the story isn't that impressive or involvingand although it does try to tug at the emotions in the father / sontale it's not really that effective but still the movie is a visualaction roller coaster ride and in the end none of that other stuffreally matters. It's a sci-fi classic in the tradition of it's 80'spredecessor and all those like it. I personally think it's an evengreater film than the original and I'm willing to bet it will be a farmore successful one as well, despite it's $200 million budget.Watch our review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VybzU5X_-Ww

Mesmerising visuals and a beautiful soundtrack keep a shabby plot afloat

The neonlight-fest visuals of this Disney sequel will have youmesmerized. The best scenes are constructed with a beautifulsurrealism, not too dissimilar from Kubrick's 2001. A Daft Punksoundtrack packs an impressive punch, as would be expected. The weakelement of the film is a rather shabby plot that will make you eitherlaugh or cry. Thankfully the audio-visual extravaganza bolsters enoughoomph to keep the whole thing afloat. TRON: Legacy picks up where the original left off 28 year ago. SamFlynn (Garrett Hedlund) is a young rebellious, cocky and arroganttwenty-something. He's one of those little rich kids that has been welland truly spoilt by millionaire daddy. Only daddy, real name Kevin(Jeff Bridges), has been missing for over two decades. Turn's out he'sdisappeared into 'The Grid' and couldn't get back. One day Sam managesto hop inside this virtual world too and they are reunited. Inside the parallel universe that is 'The Grid', the robot-people arereferred to as 'programs'. The 'programs' are made to fight each other. In this sense it's a lot like Gladiator but without the lions and lotless heroic. But, to it's credit TRON boasts things that Gladiatorforgot; there is a battle-to-the-death Frisbee tournament and somerather exciting cyber-motorbike battle scenes. Clu (Jeff Bridges) controls 'The Grid' and tells the programs what todo. He's the boss and an authoritarian one at that. He's a bit of aHitler really. Kevin Flynn, who created the grid is forced to live inisolation outside of Clu's constituency for some reason or other. Thereal irony being that Kevin created Clu as a replica of himself a fewyears back. They are like those identical twins that love to hate eachother except that Clu fails to age and has a CGI plastic shine. The plot really isn't that great. The father-son relationship is bothawkward and clichéd. The whole narrative fails to build up to anythingvaguely exciting. This is principally because the apocalyptic threatdriving the over-heroic cheesiness really isn't that threatening. TRON isn't too dissimilar from Alice in Wonderland, in principle atleast. These are not films that deliver anything much in terms ofnarrative. The true wonder lies in the discovery of another, slightlyinsane, world. But where Alice makes this overtly clear, TRON tries tomask it with attempts fit the traditional narratives. In this light,it's essentially a rather tragic Star Wars wannabe. The trouble perhaps lies with the word 'Disney.' This is a productionfor kids who are young enough to be coaxed into a cinema trip on thepromise of popcorn from a reminiscent father. It was never going to bea gritty, daring or 'out-there' bit of film-making. TRON is worth seeing if only to indulge the senses. Take a trip to thecinema as the magic will struggle to translate into your living room,no matter how large your widescreen or expensive your 7:1s.
