It is the future. Technology has flourished, and humans have successfully colonized on the planet Mars. Douglas Quaid, a mild-mannered construction worker with a gorgeous wife and a nice apartment is very happy. But when Doug wanted to go to a place called Rekall a place where doctors provide artificial memories on vacations, his life becomes another that he knows nothing about, before he knows it, his wife turns on him and agents from an Martian organization led by the colony leader, Vilos Cohaagen are bent on his death. Doug receives a message from a man named Huaser, telling him to go to Mars and find a woman named Melina. Doug will also have to unlock the details of his former life with the help of a mutant rebel leader named Kuato to defeat Cohaagen and save the colonies on mars.
Total recall is a typical sci-fi movie packed with action and of courseArnie. I could just say a typical Arnie movie however there is some plotinthere which will keep you interested throughout, and Sharon Stone doeswelltoo.Overall a good movie to watch on a Sunday night with atakeaway.
perhaps the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ever, Total Recall is full of great effects and superb acting. It is a fun, entertaining movie that everyone can enjoy!!
Arnie is Doug Quaid, a simple construction worker who is bored with his uneventful life and wishes to be more and to do something meaningful. He's fascinated with going to Mars and meeting the mysterious woman of his dreams (that would be Melina) despite the civil war brewing withing the colonies. His wife Lori (Sharon Stone, looking gorgeous) is appalled with all things Martian and quickly nixes that idea. The only way Quaid is going to come close to the red planet is if he takes a Rekall vacation, a company that literally offers you a 'dream' vacation memory implant. Quaid wishes to go as a secret agent and all seems well until they send him to sleep. As soon as he's unconscious Quaid seems to wake up in a rage, claiming his name is not Quaid but Hauser. And it's not just the dream going wrong since the Rekall technicians have not even implanted the dream yet. Blacking out again and waking up in a cab, Quaid has totally no recollection of anything that has happened and is confused to find his life turned upside down. His wife and colleagues are trying to kill him, dozens of armed henchmen are after him, he seems to have acquired lethal killing skills from nowhere and he apparently has some unfinished business back on Mars, despite the fact that he's never been there. Or has he?Once on Mars for real (or is it?) he finds himself involved with the beautiful Melina (Rachel Ticotin, even prettier than Sharon Stone), the underground resistance and battling their arch-nemesis Vilos Cohaagen, a bureaucrat who has the entire planet under his control. It seems that Hauser was Cohaagen's right hand man and left clues for the fabricated Quaid persona to topple Cohaagen's regime.Total Recall is certainly one of Arnie's and Verhoeven's most imaginative and creative movies. The Mars town of Venusville is basically Amsterdam's Red Light District with booze, drugs and sex everywhere, the violence is so ridiculously over-the-top that one cannot help but laugh at it (despite a lot of the gorier bits being censored by the evil MPAA), the vision of the future is incongruously bleak but colorful and fanciful yet primitive. The contrasts between Earth and Mars are similar to Western and Third World comparisons. The visual effects, if slightly dated, are simply amazing. Jerry Goldsmith's awesome score is, at once, atmospheric and action-packed. The set-pieces, especially Quaids vision of the alien furnaces, are just ludicrously entertaining and the 'is it a dream or is it real' premise puts such a wonderfully surreal twist on the whole thing. Sci-Fi has never been so outrageous. What do you expect with mad genius Dutchman directing? And I do believe that it IS real. The BD may be missing any extras but the film looks absolutely gorgeous in 1080p and is surely one of the best-looking BDs I have seen so far. Very, very impressed indeed. Highly recommended.
This is cool comes with a metal tin case that holds your DVD. I got this cause of the tin. Get it, better then the DVD in the Normal DVD case. It has all the same things as the one in the normal case. The special fea. are cool.
If you don't count Terminator and Terminator 2 that is. Arnold stars inthissci-fi action which acts out on both earth and mars. If you haven'twatchedit before the plot can be a little hard to understand, but that is part ofthe movie so i wont give anything away :)
As a Blu-ray disk, this is very disappointing. Video quality is among the worst.
This review is from: Total Recall [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I am writing mainly for those considering purchasing this blu-ray edition of Total Recall. Don't ; save your money. It is the worst transfer I have seen so far. The picture is constantly grainy and ruins what is otherwise a fine film. It is just outrageous that they would market a film in blu-ray in such poor condition. That accounts for the two stars, which otherwise would have been at least four for the film itself. It still holds up very well after twenty years, is superbly paced with nonstop action, and great effects for its time. Unfortunately my laser disc version of this film is better quality than the blu-ray. This is totally unacceptable.
Arnold is a great actor. I bet he would be be great in polatics also!!! To remake in 5.1 Audio is great. The FX are amazing. The movie is so professionally laid for 1991. I just glad to have 3 NIB in my collection. The metal case is wonderful. Very artistic.
This is one of Arnold Schwazenegger's best movies (after the Terminatorfilms), and one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time (after the Terminatorseries and Aliens). The plot is quite simple, but the action is top notch stuff. The body counthits the rafters (more than Commando?) and Arnie kills some of the bad guysin rather gruesome ways. The special effects are good (for 1990), and thescript is laced with Arnie's one-liners (such as killing his 'wife', playedby Sharon Stone, after she tries to kill him, and saying 'Consider that adivorce")All in all, one of the best Sci-Fi/Action movies around, and a must for anySchwazenegger fan. 4/5
Manual worker Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), mildly out ofsorts with life, takes a virtual holiday with Recall, a company whichimplants exciting memories of the holiday you didn't have (as, forinstance, a spy). Armed police suddenly invade the place, and Dougfinds himself embroiled in a conspiracy where his is a double (ortriple) agent who has had his memories replaced with fake ones, ismarried to someone who is actually an agent/minder and not really hiswife (Sharon Stone, in her breakout role), and ends up plotting against(or possibly unwittingly for), dictator Kolhaagen (Ronnie Cox) whilefalling in with his real lover (or is she) Melina (Rachel Ticotin). Oris this all part of his "holiday"? This brash, ebullient sci-fi romp, based on a Philip K Dick shortstory, is huge fun. Paul Verhoeven handles the action well, all theactors enjoy themselves (Schwarzenegger's shortcomings as an actor areoutweighed by his screen presence and verve), effects, makeup and setdesign are all excellent, and Sharon Stone is unbelievably sexy.Plus the story is good fun, and never lets you go.
A superb film, largely underrated (due to Arnie being the lead actor)whichinspired many other films. Think of the Matrix - the scene where Neo hastoswallow a pill to return to real reality - that was also in Total Recall -and the plot of the Matrix (is all life a dream?) was clearly influencedbyTotal Recall. Also I was reminded of many other later sci fi movies, andhadto keep reminding myself that they were ideas original to this film first.Even film The Bourne Identity with Matt Damon film seems to correlate withthis (secret agent who has forgotten everything but still remember hisagenttatics and fight skills). Credit where credit is due - a superb, verywatchable film!
Well, I don't know what to say here. No real difference (I could see) between the standard def and high def print. Sound was very good but nothing earth-shattering. Still... it's Total Recall and I always loved this movie. Regardless it was a must buy for me. If you too love this film, go with your soul... otherwise you may want to move on.
What a good movie! This is everything a Schwarzenegger movie is supposed to be. It is fun. It is exciting. It actually is though provoking. It has a plot, and a good one at that. The Austrian Oak plays Doulas Quaid, a man not quite happy here on earth. And while he can't afford a vacation there, he has heard things about a business called "recall." This is where the movie gets interesting. Recall can program memories into your head. While Quaid is getting his dream vacation, something goes terribly wrong. He ends up going to Mars anyway, and there are now questions about his identity, what his actual mission is, and about his life in general. What is made up? What is real? Will he ever know? It makes for a very exciting movie. This DVD looks awesome. The case is cutting edge, using a Mars cutout on top (the size of a DVD). The special features look great, too, including commentary by Arnold himself. This is a must buy.
Hitchcock would have enjoyed the plot-within-a-plot. Did Quaid really existto experience the mind-bending intrigue as presented on the surface of thisfilm ... or was the entire story of this undercover operative's mission onMars only the product of a virtual vacation after all. This is truly one ofthose films that reveals more each time you watch it.
This review is from: Total Recall (DVD) Bought this classic for my husband's Christmas stocking and a bit for me too... This movie has not aged a bit...Unlike the actors in it...I just did not remember there was that much blood in it. Still a classic as far as the special effects/ make-up and originality of the story line! A keeper!
a very good movie to watch exciting scenes loved it. my family loved it also and i would recommend it to all families.
This review is from: Total Recall [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) We all know the movie rocks. What about the BluRay quality? This is an excellent, real hi-def movie (unlike the Terminator BluRay) with fantastic audio. I've saw the movie on the big screen, then on DVD. BluRay at home with a 5.1 sound system is the way to go. If you're a fan of Arrrnold, SciFi, Philip K. Dick (the movie is based on one of his books, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale) or action movies, then this disc is for you.
This is the first modern American movie I saw growing up in the Soviet Union. I loved every second of it. It is the ultimate 90's action movie. It came out during the time when action movies rulled the big screan and Total Recal is definetly the top of the class for that time. It is visually appealing even by todays stadards. Todays movies have much to learn from this classic as far as the story line goes. Sharon Stone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are at their best.
Phillip K. Dick's novel, We Can Remember it for You Wholesale, is aboutthe classic meshing of reality, false memory and real memory. TotalRecall is loosely based on the novel by Phillip K. Dick. This movie hasa lot of great visual effects, a lot of great action sequences and someacting for Schwarznegger. In this movie, Anrold plays a average Joe whowants to travel to Mars. The movie is set in the year 2084 A.D, and itdoes play a major role in the movie itself. Arnold then goes to a placecalled Rekall to implant a memory in his mind. But then, his charactersuddenly bursts into anger as he is what he believe to be a secretagent, who's cover was blown. After the blowout, his friends are allenemies and are out to kill him. So, he escapes and goes to Mars to gethis real identity on who stole his true identity and why. Soon enough, the action starts up again. As I said before, Total Recall has somegreat special effects and great action sequences. But, sometimes themovie can be confusing to viewers because Arnold Schwarznegger is sortof playing himself and someone else in his false identity. Total Recallis a great science fiction action thriller *** 3 stars.
The 1990's entered with an explosive note, when it came to movies. Like his first science fiction classic, Robocop, Paul Verhoeven would bring audiences another explosive science fiction adventure film. One with plenty of graphic violence, explosive action, three-dimensional characters, spectacular sets, and the like. Most of all, a unique plot twist that leaves the viewer wondering the same question that Arnold schwarzenegger had in the end. Was it all a dream?Whatever the audience may decide, one thing is for certain. Total Recall is an excellent science fiction action adventure film. One that is both cerebral and violent. Everyone involved in the picture does an excellent job, both on and off the camera. Arnold does a good job, however, this reviewer wishes that Patrick Swayze or Tom Berenger was in the lead heroic role. Michael Ironside, as always does an excellent job as the assasin type, trying to kill Arnold. Ronny Cox does an excellent job playing the cruel colony administrator with his own twisted agenda. Sharon Stone was good too in her role. Her character's death in the middle of the film was well deserved for a villain. And the beautiful Rachel Ticotin did an excellent performance as a revolutionary leader on Mars. The movie, despite its violent layering, also had a hidden message to it. Information is the most powerful weapon in today's society. And too much information is definately a dangerous thing. The subplot about the Martian machinery was also good, as was Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack of the film. Definately a classic of the science fiction genre on all levels. If you enjoy science fiction, you will enjoy this film. Another classic from ITC ENTERTAINMENT.
