Maverick is a hot pilot. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the Carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his fathers death in combat that killed others due to his fathers error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.
One of the greatest fighter pilot movies of all time. This movie made me want to join the Navy for God sakes. Tom cruise is the shishithithit.
Typical Hollywooded, larger-than-life blockbuster from the mid-80s. Thismovie is a must see for Cruise fans. One of the best soundtracks of the80s. Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Tom Skeritt give one of the bestperformances of their careers. Of course it is not an accurate depictionofTop Gun as some have pointed out .... it is a movie made for pureentertainment value.
The movie has always been great. The additional DVD about the making the movie was really well done.
I thought that this movie was incredible for it's time and how much of the actuall movie was true; based on the fact that there actually is a school out in miramar California named top gun for the best of the best pilots in the navy. I thought that both kelly mcgillis and tom cruise did an excellent job together based on this movie and hope that they do more movies together
It never ceases to amaze me that some people actually beleve "TOP GUN" has a basis in reality. Because it doesn't. "STAR TREK" rings truer than "TOP GUN". Go back to High School young men, and maybe someday maybe you'll get a drivers licencse. If you think you can race your Kawasaki against a jet aircraft down the runway on a military installation without getting shot...then maybe its too late for you already. Get real! Get your G.E.D.
Spoilers herein. This film is of historical interest. It is the first engineered blockbusterfocused on romanticizing the gizmos of war as toys. Post Tom Clancy. Itmarks the turning point of Tom Cruise from a promising actor with controlledenergy in `Color of Money' to a strutting mugger. It marks the first major screen debut of Meg Ryan, establishing her formula. So too with Val Kilmer, but both of those are mere celebrities rather thanactors. Here also is Robbins who would turn into a fineactor. It is the event that got the Department of Defense re-energized about theeffectiveness of Hollywood. But most of all, this film marks the switch between Ridley and Tony. Tonywas expected to be the one to make intelligent films. Ridley had made twovery impressive scifi films, but these were notable for their art direction. The money was on Ridley to fade, or find a commercial niche like Cameron. But things turned out the reverse. Tony has been making this same film overand over, each version more snappy, swoopy and gizmo-laden than thelast.
In 1986 when I was a young boy that began to live near an airforcejetbase, the legend started for me.I met TOP GUN.It's a legend because it'snever been just a movie for me.All the musics, scenes, scripts, and allstuff feels me great and emotional. It's the Spirit of TOP GUN.Despite allthe technical or artistical faults I believe both the movie and thesoundtrack even all other things (especially the others in fact...) are thebests of all times.Still when I remind a part of a scene or a music in TOPGUN, I feel different.I've seen it 50-60 times maybe more, not just themovie, but all filled with spirit of TOP GUN...
I remember watching this movie in the theater and being blown away by thesound and visual excitement of the flying scenes. Many movies since havetried to match it (Iron Eagle anyone?), but none has comeclose.Since then, I've seen it countless times on video and cable, and it nevergets stale. It has everything for everybody: action, romance, humor, tragedy, and a happy ending. Oh, and Tom Cruise, in the role that brandedhim a Superstar. If you buy a home theater system with Surround Sound, this is the firstmovie you should watch. I had jets flying behind my head allnight!
This review is from: Top Gun (DVD) "Top Gun" is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of movies. When it's in the air, it's awesome, but when it's on the ground, it's pretty bad. Because you can skip the ground scenes quite conveniently on DVD, I give the movie on DVD 4 stars. Why are the ground scenes so bad? Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis have near zero chemistry, so it's almost painful watching the formulaic antagonistic sparks between them mutate into passion. It happens only because the script dictates that it happen. But when the movie gets into the air, wow! Flying scenes are often difficult to film, because the viewer can lose perspective too easily. Director Tony Scott does a masterful job of always letting the viewer orient himself or herself, so that you understand when planes are climbing or diving. One of the really startling things you can do is to watch the X-wing scenes in "Star Wars" and then watch the flying scenes in "Top Gun." You'd swear that our F-14s could wipe out squadron after squadron of X-wings.In summary, "Top Gun" is a must-have for the DVD aficianado. It's one of the movies (along with "The Matrix" and "Tomorrow Never Dies" that I use when my wife and I have guests over and I'm in "demonstration mode."
This review is from: Top Gun (DVD) This movie has always been one of my top favorites both for just being a great movie to one of the best for sound. The launch off the flight deck at the beginning of the movie is one of the most awesome visual and audio recordings of a carrier launch that I've ever seen. I haven't stood on a carrier deck during a launch but this is the closest I've been. I fell in lust with Kelly McGillis in this movie and have loved her since. And, as a pilot but not jets darn-it, I loved all the flying sequences.
It took almost fifteen years until I watched Top Gun for the firsttime.I clearly remember that this movie was very popular when it ran intheGerman theatres in 1987 and I heard a lot about this mixture ofaction, adventure and romance. I never expected Top Gun to be amasterpiece. However, I always thought that I had missed something, not havingseenit. But when I actually watched this movie one week ago it occuredtome that I was wrong. Action and adventure? A bunch of guys that want to be herosdoingnothing but cracking stupid jokes and flying around in jets allthetime, finally fighting (and of course winning) against a namelessenemy(i.e. the Soviet Union). No thrill at all. No explanation of the Cold War background atall.Dialogues as silly as can be, leaving me helpless whether to laughorcry. Romance? Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in something that ismeantto be a love story but fails to convey the slightest touch ofromance.Acting? Cruise and Kilmer in their ridiculous "Who gets to performthebroadest grin/the ugliest sneer?"-competition. The single funnyaspectis the music score, a synthesizer sound emerging from the deepestdepthsof the 1980s, this very strange decade.Let's face it: Top Gun is nothing but a commercial for the US Navy(justthink of the jets starting from and landing on the carrier in thewarm, red light of sunrise or sunset) and a perfect example ofthehyper-patriotism of the Reagan era. The movie depicts some sortofunreflected militarism that is not my cup of tea.Only in terms of technique (cinematography, editing  ) this workisquite all right. So Top Gun isn't exactly one of the worst butsurelyone of the silliest movies I have ever seen: 2 out of 10 -period.
Wow! When I saw this movie I was so impressed with the special effects andthe visual effects of this movie. This movie is so great and the actors inthat movie have made a great performance, the music and the story is great.Ever since I saw this movie I felt in love with it, I didn't blink an eye inthe movie because it was so great, it really deserved to win an oscar. My favorite songs of that movie are 'Take My Breath Away' by Berlin and theair force style song 'Mighty Wings' by Cheap Trick. Tom Cruise sang reallygood the song he singed for the Instructor, but the part where I cried inthe movie was when Maverick's friend died during a training with his othertwo companions Iceman and Hollywood when they we're on a test flight withViper and Jester. This movie is great, it makes me wanna be in the Air Force and pilot and bethe best of the best like Maverick was, I absolutely give this movie a bigfat 10/10
This movie is an awesome hit from director Tony Scott (also directed Beverly Hills Cop, Enemy of the State, and much more) dense with fun and excitement that will keep you FLYING for as long as you like. Tom Cruise (Days of Thunder, Jerry Maguire, etc.) stars as hotshot fighter jet pilot "Maverick" Pete Mitchell, who is elected with his partner "Goose" (Anthony Edwards) to enter the Navy's very competitive "Top Gun" program, where many comparible opponents challenge him to win the top rank, including "Iceman" Tom Kusansky (Val Kilmer) and "Slider" (Russ Rossovich). Stars Kelly McGillis as Mitchell's girlfriend, with appearances by Michael Ironside, Clarence Gilyard Jr., Meg Ryan (as Goose's wife), and Tim Robbins. A great action film.
The clasic story of good versus bad, the US versus Russia, will continue forever to enthrall viewers. The all-star cast and action packed dog-fight scenes are rarely duplicated in a movie today. Top Gun is the Best!!!
Top Gun has got to be one of the best movies ever made, the song Take myBreath Away is a fantastic song to listen to. All of this was made in 1986.I think Take my breath away did get to the number 1 spot in 1986. I love thesong. I give the whole think, the song and the movie 10 out of10.
This review is from: Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition) (DVD) I'm biased.I own the original Top Gun DVD, the Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition) DVD, the Top Gun [Blu-ray], and now the HD-DVD.Top Gun is awesome (look at the plentiful amount of reviews), and if you didn't know that, it's time to find out!
Top Gun is possibly the best movie i've ever seen. It's so good that I felt that it was necessary to capitalize every word in the title. But why Goose? WHY? Why not Iceman I didnt like him very much. If you wanna know what the heck I'm talking about, watch it over and over again. They're always showing it on ABC Family. But, seriously this movie is th greatest. Maybe even better than Pirates of the Carribean, which is saying a lot. 'Cause that's a pretty great movie, also. okay, g'bye.
While this may not be a masterpiece of all time, i personally still considerit quite a cult film and it includes basically every emotion a movie likethis needs, it has romance, sorrow and loss, but most importantly it has thebest display of winner mentality i have seen since Rocky, and that is mostlywhy this film WORKS, becuase it really shows what is inside almost all ofus, the need to win, the need to compete and win! Also even though many may say that this is a predictable movie, i don'tthink that, i actually was surprised at least 2 times over twists in theplot, i'm not gonna mention it here cuz it's useless to destroy endings, butwell i just think everyone should check it out. It's a cult film for thesetype of films, and it really makes you feel good. Also Tom Cruise isabsolutely great, even back then he was an amazing actor.
This should have been a great film after all it is directed by Tony Scott, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and has one of the best scores of the eighties, or indeed any other decade, composed as it is by Harold Faltermeyer (Beverly Hills Cop I & II), not as some seem to think Giorgio Moroder. However not even the dramatic flight sequences and terrific score can save this film overrun as it is with romance and sentimentality, which slows down the pace of the film unnecessarily. Buy this DVD only for the improved sound quality. Pity it doesn't contain more special features, such as isolated score, let's hope future Paramount releases imporve on this.
This film, when viewed in retrospect, is symptomatic of the 1980'syuppie culture. When Mavrick's best friend dies his girlfriendvirtually disowns him and only takes him back when he has some earningpotential again (when he regains his Mojo, so to speak). In fact, the phallus plays a crucial role in the film, from it'sembodiment in the physical shape of the airplane all the way through toCruise playing with his stout beer bottle in the final scene. And whyis it that you have semi-naked men playing beach volleyball hugging oneanother as often as they possibly can? Probably to keep Julian Clary(and Graham Norton (if you are American and do not know who JulianClary is)) happy....Still, saying that, if you take your brain out of gear and marvel atthe production values rather than the script then it's an OK way topass a couple of hours of your life. Do remember though, you'll neverget those couple of hours back - so be warned if you hate it andrealise after you should've watched a rerun of Citizen Kane.
