To Have and Have Not

Harry Morgan and his alcoholic sidekick, Eddie, are based on the island of Martinique and crew a boat available for hire. However, since the second world war is happening around them business is not what it could be and after a customer who owes them a large sum fails to pay they are forced against their better judgement to violate their preferred neutrality and to take a job for the resistance transporting a fugitive on the run from the Nazis to Martinique. Through all this runs the stormy relationship between Morgan and Marie Slim Browning, a resistance sympathizer and the sassy singer in the club where Morgan spends most of his days.

The movie that introduced Bogart to Bacall & us now on DVD!

Warner BrothersEnterainment does an outstanding job an converting this classic to DVD.This was one of Hollywoods immortal romantic couples along with Gable and Lombard and Tracy and Hepburn. One difference Bogart and Bacall's passion was forever captured on the silver screen. We would always see those first torrid moments of acting become real life love story.Lauren Bacall was nineteen year old upcoming star who was mentored by Hawks, with a Vernoica Lake hair sytle, alluring eyes and the deepest sexiest voice. You could feel Humphrey Bogarts emotions and admiration for this new sultry siren star. Quickly they became involved and later married and did 5 more films together."To Have and Have Not" was the perfect launch vehicle for the Bogart - Bacall Phenomenon. Loosely based on Ernest Hemingways novel of the same name, Bogart is an American fishing boat captain in Martinique a French owned island during WWII. A similar story line to Casablanca except he gets the girl. This is a classic movie and a must have for the DVD Bogart library.Special Features include; Featurette "A love Story", The Story of "To Have And Have Not", vintage bogart & Bacall cartoon, a 1946 Lux Radio Theater Production starring Bogart and Bacall and Theatrical Trailer.

Lovely Romance – When Fiction and Reality Gets Mixed

In the summer of 1940, in the city of Fort de France in the Caribbeanisland of Martinique shortly after the fall of France in the beginningof the World War II, Captain Harry 'Steve' Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) isthe cynical owner of the boat Queen Conch. He hires his boat totourists for fishing and earns his money. However, he is also a niceman, and protects his alcoholic friend Eddie (Walter Brennan), whoworks with him. Steve is cheated in US$ 825,00 by his fishing customerJohnson (Walter Sande), and without any money, decides to accept tobring the members of the French resistance Paul de Bursac (WalterMolnar) and his wife Mme. Hellene de Bursac (Dolores Moran) from aclose location to Martinica in his boat. Meanwhile, he meets Marie'Slim' Browning (Lauren Bacall), a young lonely woman, lodged in thesame hotel where he lives. They get closer and a passion begins, in ascenario of political repression by the Nazis collaborators. This movieis a lovely romance. The chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and LaurenBacall is real, since this film is the landmark of their torrid affair.Lauren Bacall is amazingly beautiful, sexy and elegant in her debut onthe screen. The art of the Brazilian DVD is wonderful, and there isanother attraction in the Extras: a cartoon called 'Bacall to Arms',making a joke with the couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in thescene where she says that he just need to whistle to call her. My voteis ten.Title (Brazil): 'Uma Aventura na Martinica' ('One adventure inMartinique')

Classical

Of all Bogart's movies, this is the best classic because it was written bythe master, Ernest Hemingway and directed by Howard Hawks. The classiclinein this is learning how to whistle - "just put your lips together andblow,"Lauren says to Bogart. Their scenes together are seamy and steamy; theiracting is both strong and cooly passionate. The comedy is well done byWalter Brennan the sidekick. The story is about smugglers and the FrenchResistance on Martinique. This film is better than Casablanca, and HoagyCarmichael plays his piano while Lauren sings a hot number called "HowLittle We Know".

Bogie & Bacall 'Signature Collection.'

This review is from: Bogie and Bacall - The Signature Collection (The Big Sleep / Dark Passage / Key Largo / To Have and Have Not) (DVD) Very well packaged with nice box to hold 4 DVD. Easy viewing but could have contained more 'special features' i.e. interviews and history of making the movie. Vocal dialogue clear and crisp as are the pictures. Great for personal in home collection, and the 4 DVD case adds a nice elegant touch. Should hold up well with routine handling. Certainly worth the money. 'To Have and Have Not' is very loosely based on Hemingway's book, but, is still enjoyable. Jules Furthman and William Faulkner adapted Hemingway's classic book, and, take numerous liberties with the Heminway's storyline. So beware if looking for the movie to follow Hemingway's book as one will be dissapointed (if in high school and looking to shortcut by watching the movie rather than reading the book...you are busted.) Howard Hawks is at his best as a director with 'To Have and Have Not' and 'The Big Sleep.' John Huston directs 'Key Largo' which is included in the collection. Delmar Daves directs 'Dark Passage.' Hoagy Carmichael plays-performs a few songs in 'To Have and Have Not' but they are not overdone and fit the storyline well. The scene with Bacall asking for a 'light' and 'just blow' is subtle and redhot with classic sex appeal.Dolores Moran exudes classic beauty and fine acting skills, while Bacall with a cool calm demeanor matches Moran's physical beauty with body language and dialogue. There are moments of levity which are appropriate and low key. The jacket liner notes "it strongly resembles Casablanca" which is a stretch and, strongly resembles a marketing ploy. Overall this is a fine Bogie & Bacall movie and well worth owning and viewing many times.

What are you so sore about?

Loosely based on Ernest Hemmingway's novel, To Have And Have Notfeatures crisp dialogue, seamless direction from Howard Hawks and toptier acting. But be that as it may, the film is best remembered for thecoupling of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, who quickly took theiron screen romance out into the real world. The rest as they say ishistory. The story is set in the Caribbean city of Fort de France, Martinique, shortly after the fall of France to the Germans. Harry 'Steve' Morgan(Bogart) is a world wise fishing boat captain who is wanted to do asecretive people smuggle from a nearby island for the FrenchResistance. Initially very reluctant, Harry has to take on the job whena series of events leave him flat broke. Also into his life comes Marie'Slim' Browning (Bacall), an American pickpocket who has come to theisland more by default than design. So with his alcoholic pal in tow{Walter Brennan} and the Gestapo breathing down his neck, Harry has awhole heap of issues suddenly making his once neutral and tranquil lifeexplosive.Legend has it that Hemingway & Hawks were involved in a debate one dayduring one of their fishing trips in Florida. The out-shot of thatargument was that Hawks proclaimed he could make a winner of a movieout of what he considered was Hemingway's worst novel, To Have & HaveNot. Hawks duly delivered this hugely endearing, often funny andentertaining movie that is a lesson in on screen chemistry and finelytuned writing {Jules Furthman and William Faulkner}. The similaritiesto Casablanca are many, so in that, this is weak by comparison. In factdig away the buzzing like atmosphere here and you find a pretty weakplot. But in its purest escapist form the film is a triumph. Savvy, sexy and not short on suspense, To Have And Have Not holds up to itsclassic status. 8/10

Flawed, but still a must-see

Having seen both this film and The Big Sleep, I must say that WilliamFaulkner should have stuck to writing novels. If either of these moviesis good, it is despite the script, not because of it. Where the BigSleep has a ridiculously convoluted plot that I have given up onunderstanding, To Have and Have Not has a plot that almost seems toosimple, and dialog that often tries too hard to match the wit ofCasablanca. This movie was watchable, however, because of the palpablechemistry in Bogey and Bacall's first meeting; I don't think I've everseen a debut more stunning, save by James Dean. Not all the charactersare quite as captivating, however; Dan Seymour seems to be doing a badSydney Greenstreet impression in his role as Captain Renard, and WalterBrennan's Eddie isn't quite funny enough to be the main comic relief. All in all, despite its flaws, To Have and Have Not is worth a viewingto see how Bogey and Bacall fell in love, even if you don't have aburning desire to see it again afterward.

Excellent movie with Bogie and Lauren

To Have And Have Not was the first movie to co-star Humphery Bogart andhis future wife Lauren Bacall and they fell in love during filming.Bogie plays Harry Morgan and he and his sidekick are based inMartinique where they hire a boat out. Set in World War Two, businessis not as busy as usual so they get an illegal job to transport acriminal on the run from the Nazis, along with his wife. He also fallsin love with a singer who is performing at the local club. The rest of the cast includes Walter Brennan, Dolores Moran and HoagyCarmicharl, whose singing keeps the movie moving along nicely. We alsoget to see Lauren singing too.To Have And Have Not is a must for all Boagie fans out there.Faantastic.Rating: 4 stars out of 5.

The best of all the Humphrey Bogart movies

I am a huge Bogart fan, and this is the best of all his movies. He isso natural, so smooth, and his character is so likable, that youinstantly understand why so many people still worship him as an actor. It's a love story, a buddy movie, a thriller, a war movie, a comedy, and a showcase for Bogart and Bacall at their best. The script iswonderful (and fortunately, nothing like the Hemingway story from whichis supposedly was taken), and there are more quotable lines than onemovie ought to be allowed to have. Bacall is absolutely stunning tolook it, and I still find it difficult to believe that this was herfirst movie, and that she was only 19 years old when she made it. Thisis one of those movies that you can watch over and over, and it nevergrows stale.

Bogie and Bacall sizzle on screen

If ever two stars were made for each other on screen it would have to be movie greats Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in "To Have And Have Not" a sultery Film Noir if ever there was one. The film literally oozes with seductive qualities in scene after scene aided beautifully by the shady photography so characteristic of this genre.Made in the closing period of World War 2 it marked not only another Howard Hawks triumph both critically and financially but also featured a truly stunning film debut for the deep voiced Lauren Bacall. She would have to be judged one of the great discoveries of this mid 40's period and she proved her worth time and again in many great films over the years. One of the great romances of the Golden years of Hollywood began on this film and resulted in Bacall and Bogart continuing their love affair into the making of another classic "The Big Sleep" and becoming man and wife in real life. It is hard to believe in "To Have And To Have Not" that Bacall was only 19 years of age, she seems so assured and quite up to matching the veteran Bogart line by line. In the role of Mary (Slim) Browning a girl stranded in the colony of Martinique Bacall portrays a self sufficent woman living by her wits who comes across an unlikely object for affection in Bogart's Harry Morgan a fishing Boat owner who in between hiring out his vessel for fishing excursions through a set of circumstances finds himself working for the French resistance movement ilegally ferrying out supporters of the regime out of enemy territory. Theirs is a meeting of two unlikely characters but from their first scene the sparks fly as Bogart sees that Bacall is no pushover and Bacall realises that there is more to Bogart than the rough exterior indicates."To Have And To Have Not" would have to undoubtedly rank in the top 5 of Bogart' best films along with "The Maltese Falcon", "Casablanca" and "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" and others. It presented the unique image of a screen actor who didn't need to possess matinee idol good looks to be a romantic lead. That was Bogart's unique quality in film after film and in "To Have" he has the perfect vechicle for all his great qualities, a tale filled with romance, intrigue, action, gripping narrative. The film has it all. Based on a not very successful novel by Ernest Hemingway who often wrote about people living on the edge or those who had lost purpose in their lives, "To Have And To Have Not' deals with such a dislocated group. In the film most peoples lives are based on temporary arrangements with the prospects of their situation being altered at any moment whether it be by the war, another person's emotions or the environment they live in. This atmosphere gives this story alot of its raw energy and crisp tension that simmers throughout only to burst out near the exciting conclusion. As charismatic as Bogart and Bacall are in this film the stellar supporting cast also add to the overraul class and effect that this story has. Lanky Walter Brennan, a performer in many a cornball story is most effective in the role of drunken Eddie a mate of Harry's who lives for his next nip of alcohol and is a loyal friend who gets caught up in all the action in Martinique. Dolores Moran as Hellene de Bursac who Bogart rescues from enemy teritory is also most effective in her small role. The big surprise is the appearance of Hoagy Carmichael as the piano player in the bar where Harry and "Slim '(Bacall) hang out and trade quips. His scenes are so like scenes from "Casabanca" but he brings a great 40's feel to his playing that is such a pleasure to watch and adds greatly to the authentic feel of the film.Humphrey Bogart is certainly watchable in almost any film he made, good or bad but rarely has he had such a great role as that in "To Have And To Have Not" Certainly the film has a "Casablanca" feel about it but it should be judged on its own merits with an exciting storyline, sultry leading lady, plenty of adventure and humour and a beautiful seductive look to it that makes it one of the great romantic films of the mid 1940's. Enjoy!

Bogie and Bacall

This review is from: To Have and Have Not (Snap Case) (DVD) What's not to like about the first time these two acted together? A great film for its time, showing Bogart at his best and Bacall at her sultriest. Nice and clear DVD, so it's is the best viewing of this film I have seen.

First Bogart-Bacall pairing

To Have and Have Not(1944) is a wonderful movie that with the ingredients ofromance, gun play, intrique, and patriotism adds up to a great film. It isbased on a novel by Ernest Hemingway. Bogart is both laid back and cool asthe main character Steve. The film was the first appearence of futureBogart wife, Lauren Bacall. Its a nice movie especially for the hopelessromantics.Lauren Bacall is both mysterious and tough as Slim. Walter Brennah providesplenty of comic relief to his role. This movie would be known for theromance going on and off the set between Bogie & Bacall. To Have & HaveNot(1944) is a reworking of Casablanca(1942) where this time Bogart gets thegirl at the end. Bogie did his best work when collaborating with directorslike Nicolas Ray, John Huston, Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh, and MichaelCurtiz.

Humphrey Had to Have Her.

Viewed: 7/09, 7/12Rate: 107/09: To Have and Have Not has all ingredients to constitute a classic film in its own right, but I am compelled to wait for second and third viewings to justify a higher rating. Humphrey Bogart finally brings out the best of himself in in it just like how he did for Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. Watching Lauren Bacall, making her film debut (and she was 19 at that time which is hard to believe), to play her sultry best is another treat of the film. I don't think she was ever the same since because her character that she plays over and over is definitely tired. The story is quite good and in so many ways resembles the qualities of Casablanca. Another great part about To Have and Have Not is the characters. They all are very developed and add the richness to the texture of the film. To Have and Have Not is actually the film that Howard Hawks made a bet with Ernest Hemingway to see if the director could make a good film out of the author's worst book, and obviously Hawks won it. There is a famous quote in the film related with the wolf whistling; that didn't really catch my fancy. All in all, To Have and Have Not is a definite classic and is easily one of the most underrated films made.7/12: Instead of To Have and Have Not, it should have been Can't Have Enough because that's what happened to Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall when they saw each other in every screen. And I knew there was more to it than that. Quite naturally, Bogart had an affair with her during the film and then subsequently got married to her. The most famous first line of Lauren Bacall's career during To Have and Have Not began with "Anybody got a match?" Then, she was never the same again. If it wasn't for her, I seriously doubt that the film would have been a classic as it is today. She was the kerosene, and Bogart was the fire. They both ignited together. To Have and Have Not may be a ripoff from Casablanca, but let's face it: it's about them, not the story. It was amusing to see two things: them calling each other by Slim and Steve instead of their real names and Slim getting jealous of Steve when he was in the presence of Madame de Bursac. A legend has it that Howard Hawks made a bet with Ernest Hemingway that he could make a great film out of his worst book. I shan't need to tell you who won, but that was a bet of a lifetime. I can't believe that Lauren was 19 when she was in the film; she looked near 30. If you want to know what a "sultry siren" looks like, look no further than her in this film. All in all, To Have and Have Not is a timeless classic. By the way, Howard Hawks was reported to be jealous of Humphrey since Lauren wanted him instead, so Howard settled for Dolores Moran (who was supposed to have a larger role in the film) whom they had a little fling as well. At least Howard didn't let his ego get in the way and decided to capitalize on the romance between the two principal stars.

Good, but in great company

To Have and Have Not just didn't sit well with me because of its neighbors. It's a good film with good acting, good dialogue and good direction. But, itright between two of Bogie's greatest appearances. I think more thananything, I got the feeling that To Have was a transitional film.In one respect, it tries to emulate Casablanca quite overtly. It takes placein a kind of City-of-the-Damned port like Casablanca where refugees andcriminals hide from the Nazis. The presence of the French resistance isanother factor in this atmosphere. Henry Morgan's disposition definitelyplays off of the I-don't-stick-my-neck-out-for-nobody and subsequentreluctant hero of Rick Blain. The presence of Dalio (here known as Frency)and of Dan Seymour (Capt. M. Renard, extremely reminiscent of SidneyGreenstreet's Gutman of the Maltese Falcon and Ferrari of Casablanca) areanother factor. Finally, the rescuing of the French resistance leader sealsthe deal. All of these elements are still well handled, but not as well asCasablanca (but what is as good as Casablanca anyway?).At the same time, To Have and Have Not is setting up the on and off screenrelationship between Bogie and Bacall. I don't think that it was cementeduntil later in The Big Sleep, another landmark for the pair.On its own, To Have and Have Not is definitely excellent, one of HowardHawks' best.

Better than Casablanca!

This review is from: Bogie and Bacall - The Signature Collection (The Big Sleep / Dark Passage / Key Largo / To Have and Have Not) (DVD) I know I will get skewered for this review, and some will consider my opinions to be blasphemous, but I believe this set has three of four movies that outclass what is supposed to be the greatest, if not one of the greatest movies of all time. Casablanca is great in its own right, but three of these movies, Key Largo, To Have and Have Not, and Dark Passage have a dialogue between its two main characters, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, that quite frankly outshines the dialogue Bogie had with Ingrid Bergman. I believe that Bogart and Bacall simply are on a level that has not been attained since. If you want to learn what meaningful dialogue sounds like, just watch these movies. The chemistry between Bogie and Bacall is as close to perfection as the silver screen will ever know. In Lauren Bacall's first movie with Bogie, the electricity crackles the moment their eyes meet in "To Have and Have Not". Bogie (Harry Morgan) is a charter fisherman who gets involved in the activities of the Free French in World War II on the island of Martinique. He manages to land one of their leaders in Martinique, and almost single-handedly takes on the nefarious Vichy leaders and their Gestapo henchmen. The dialogue is memorable between Bogie and Bacall (Marie "Slim" Browning), but the dialogue between Bogie and his mate Eddie (Walter Brennan), who is always looking out for him despite the fact that he is an alcoholic, rates highly as well and is quite hilarious. In "Key Largo", friendship as well as a heavy dose of hostility, compliments of Nora Temple (Bacall), finds Bogie (Major Frank McCloud) in a nest of blood-thirsty gangsters who commandeer Mr. Temple's (Lionel Barrymore) hotel in Key Largo. Some memorable exchanges occur not only with Bacall, but also with Edward G. Robinson (Johnny Rocco). With some guts and resourcefulness, Bogie gains the upper hand on Rocco's band of thugs, and returns to Bacall. In what is, in my opinion, Bogie's best movie ever, "Dark Passage", he plays an escaped convict, Vincent Parry, who escapes San Quentin Prison with the hope of clearing his name of the murder of his wife. What makes this movie unique is for roughly the first half of the film, the audience sees through Parry's eyes, first as an escaped convict and later as he recovers from plastic surgery to his face. Once again, some very memorable dialogue with his rescuer Irene Jansen (Bacall), but also with Sam the Taxi Driver (Tom D'Andrea), and his arch nemesis, the forever scheming Madge Rapf (Agnes Moorehead). In addition to the fine dialogue, this movie is filmed in San Francisco, with some excellent venues, especially the Golden Gate Bridge, the area around Telegraph Hill and the Filbert Steps, and the Powell-Mason Cable Car line. The fourth movie of the group, "The Big Sleep",while not being one of my favorite movies, is nevertheless another good movie with Bogie and Bacall. Film for film, this might be the best film set Amazon sells. If you like Bogie and Bacall, this set is a "must have".

A entertaining film.

The story is a bit like Casablanca and honestly the story for this film isnothing special. It´s the ACTING that IS the FILM.Bogart as the coolskipper-for-hire and Lauren Bacall as the mysterious and beautifulwoman(Bacall in her debut). We all know that Bogart and Hawks has donebetterflicks but it´s an really entertaining film.4/5

chemistry all over

You know, everything has probably been said about this movie already, still i got so enthused by seeing it for the first time in 25 yearsthat i felt compelled to give some praise. When i was about 15 yearsold i was mad about Humphey Bogart, and did my best to see many of themovies he was in. I guess i saw 10 or so and some many times. Myfavorites being Casablanca, The Afican Queen, The Roaring Twenties, KeyLargo, White Heat (Oh no, that was with my other favorite JamesCagney), Angels with dirty faces and so on, and so on. Yes i was anadolescent boy with a need for role models. The thing is, i haven'tseen these old movies for a long time now, and am 40 now. Just lastweek i saw The Big Sleep, one of Bogey's movies that eluded me somehowthen. I loved the dialogues and the great acting in that one. So ithought to try To Have And Have Not, I saw half of it then and neveragain. Boy, i wasn't disappointed. This one was oozing with tension andatmosphere. Great screenplay as well. I always felt that Casablanca wasoverrated and thought this infatuation with bogart was a fase. Withexception of the John Huston Movies, him being such a stronghuman/director and all. Howard Hawks did to my opinion outclass him inthis flick. The psychology of love on the edge driven to the limit, butnever beyond believe. Slowly working to a fantastic shocking climax. The chemistry between Bogart and Bacall being the icing on the cake.BRILLIANT!

moonspinner55 2013-03-17 22:22:50

The first (and worst) of the Bogie-Bacall screen teamings...

Popular but rather dreary film-adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novelwas worked on by a handful of writers (as well as by director HowardHawks and the actors, though only Jules Furthman and William Faulknerare credited), but still it's a somewhat rusty semi-noir without muchplot to hang its personalities on (which Hawks acknowledged at thetime). Hard-boiled American boat captain in France circa 1940 becomesinvolved in the Wartime Resistance. Fans of Humphrey Bogart have giventhe picture a sterling reputation over the years--and he's typicallygood in it--yet all the drama adds up to very little. Bogie metfuture-wife Lauren Bacall on this film, her movie debut, but we neverlearn her place in all this (and her 'singing' is barely passable, tobe charitable). Highlights: the gorgeous, glossy black-and-whitecinematography by Sid Hickox, Franz Waxman and William Lava's romanticscore...plus the added pleasure of Bacall asking Bogie if he knows howto whistle. ** from ****

A True Classic

This is one of my favorite Bogart movies and when Bogart and Bacall are together they are electric. The acting is incredible and the story is superb, but when you have a great director and exceptional acting talent how can the movie not be a true classic.

All About the Chemistry

This review is from: To Have and Have Not (Snap Case) (DVD) TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, made in 1944, has recently been brought out on DVD, and it's terrific entertainment. I was surprised (at my second lifetime viewing, first was about 1980) at how much of a knock-off of Casablanca this is, and at how little that matters, even for one so insanely protective of the Casablanca franchise as I am. You watch this one for the chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and it doesn't disappoint. She's 19, he's 45 and in his second unhappy marriage, but they are finding the love of their lives in each other here, and will soon marry and have three children before he dies of lung cancer in ten years. My recollection was that she's just a female version of Bogart (that's fine by me), very tough and very cool, but her softer side struck me this time (even better). Bogart plays a guy who does fishing charters from a French island in the Caribbean; she's stuck there for some reason; he tiptoes into World War II when he picks up a Free France guy and his wife. Legend has it that the director, Howard Hawks, made a bet with Ernest Hemingway that he could make a good movie out of Hemingway's worst book, so let's skip the synopsis and just say that the plot doesn't get in the way of things. (Hawks also made a bet that he could pull off a film in which a key player's face was shot in semi-shadow twenty different ways. Just kidding.) Walter Brennan has the chief supporting role, playing Harry Morgan (Bogart's) alcoholic sidekick, and Abdul from the Casablanca cast plays the local Vichy heavy to a T. The composer Hoagy Carmichael ("Stardust," "Georgia On My Mind"-no, they don't appear in this film, but a couple of good tunes do) has a significant part; Slim's turn as a torch singer is surprisingly effective, reminiscent of Meryl Streep in Postcards From the Edge. There are several iconic scenes in this movie-"You know how to whistle, Steve..." of course (he calls her "Slim," which she doesn't care for, so she simply gives him another name, too); but I also like the scene in which he asks her to walk around him once ("I get it. No strings."). Best of all is early on when she walks in his direction saying, "You know, Steve, most of the time I can tell exactly what you're going to say. The rest of the time? The rest of the time you're just a stinker." She kisses him for the first time. She kisses him again. "It's better when you help."
