Deep-sea explorer Brock Lovett has reached the most famous shipwreck of all - the Titanic. Emerging with a safe believed to contain a diamond called The Heart of the Ocean, he discovers the safe does not hold the diamond but a drawing of a beautiful woman wearing it. When Brock is later interviewed on TV, he shows the drawing to the cameras, and a 100-year-old woman named Rose Calvert living in Michigan recognizes the woman in the drawing - herself! On a visit to Brocks explorer ship over the wreck, Rose tells her story of the Titanic and its ill-fated voyage. Engaged to a would-be steel magnate, Caledon Hockley, she boards the Titanics first-class suites with him her mother in Southampton. Also boarding are Jack Dawson his friend Fabrizio, after a lucky poker game wins them tickets in steerage. When Rose attempts suicide by jumping off the stern in 3rd class, Jack pulls her back onto the ship...and a bond is forged between them as Jack is invited by her into 1st-class the following day. Roses mother Cal Hockley try desperate measures to keep them apart. But that strategy goes out the window when the Titanic collides with an iceberg, and due to a design flaw begins to sink - despite being proclaimed unsinkable. Now Rose Jack must fight to stay alive, but is young Jack already doomed because of his lower status as a steerage passenger?
I watched the movie in 1997 after it was released in VHS. I hadn't beenable to watch it while being on the "big screen" and as a result mycuriousness was explicitly bigger than it was at the beginning. I daresay I have watched it over 10 times ever since and still haven't gotbored with it. Although it is a characteristic piece of pure Hollywoodcinema, nobody can deny it's breathtaking and above-average moving.First of all, although the plot was simple, non-complicated and(shouldn't deny it)rather predictable, it still is a beautifulfictional love story which in fact has a logical base: we shouldn'tforget that most marriages in the 1920s were a result of parents'personal ambitions and financial motivations, so they happened mainlyfor interest. But as soon as Rose met Jack, who above all saved her inevery way a person can be saved, it is natural to fall in love at once,as near him she imagined the live she would have died to live. Then. asfar as the technical merit is concerned....what can I say?The work madeis just magnificent!!!No other comments. And finally it's worthmentioning the strongest element of the movie which rises her aboveall: the music, which is widely concerned as a classic!..... 9.8/10
I have always been a little against so called 'classic' films, especiallygone with the Wind, which I really don't like. But even after seeingTitanic about 50 times, i still agree with my first impression of it. Iwasbasically dragged by the hair to watch this film by my friends, as I'd seen'A night to remember' and couldn't really be bothered with this new titanicfilm. However, I was so mesmerised by my first visit that I saw it another5 times at the cinemas. The story is simplistic, yet powerful. The acting is great. And thecinematography.....well what can you say about some of the shots in thisfilm. Will one day be a classic up there with casablancaetc
I think James Cameron has done a great job of Titanic. However if one was tolook in depth of why the was such a success then you will probably see thatthe film is divided into 2 parts. The first of course being a love story. Wehave seen many love stories and most of them are the same ( Different plot )Then the 2nd part, A historical disaster. Making a film on just a disasteris not classified as a film at all, but a documentary. Now mix the 2 partstogether and you have the perfect ingredients for a top film. BUT it is mypersonal opinion, that the music had made this film a hugh hit. The musicmade you feel everything that the people felt on that ship. Like some onesaid "Music is 50% of the film" It was because of the music that we wantedto cry at the end - not Leo drowning. And I think the best actor in the filmwas Billy Zane. And now for the cherry on the cake. I heard they were goingto make the sequel to this film! Storyline ? well who knows . . . . .
i love this movie.. and anyone who doesn't is crazy, when it first cameout it was pretty much the movie everyone talked about. its filled withmany laughs, tears, ups and downs, its pretty much has it all. and thespecial effects are great, and so is the acting. It was sort of thebreakout movie for Leonardo and Kate, and i feel they did a great jobalong with all the other actors and actress's. May i also mention theincredible score by James Horner is amazing. And what i don'tunderstand is why some people love to hate this movie, the people whowalked into this movie and already decided they were going to analyzeevery flaw should have never even saw it in the first place, becausethere really just ruining it for everybody else. i give this move a 10out a 10 and i think most people would agree that it definitelydeserved to win the Oscar that year for best picture, its anunforgettable movie that everyone should see
Excellent movie and this is coming from someone who intentionallydismissed the movie as over-hype and avoided it for years. I'llcertainly eat crow on this one. Everything was well done and the actorswere sincere and believable. The special effects rocked! Loved therising sense of urgency. One negative comment though: Friend once taught me that there is asliding scale in her universe. At the top is bacon, because it's sogood. At the bottom is Bill Pullman, because he's so awful. How onearth Bill Paxton gets any work is beyond me. But cheerio, his role wasminor enough not to ruin the movie.
Now firstly, I was impressed at the effort put into this film...HOWEVER, after seeing it, I have come to this conclusion: This would bea great movie were it not for the lack of originality, what you seehere is an ancient plot line marketed on the blood of people who diedin this tragedy, if you want to see a similar film, get out Romeo andJuliet (another DiCaprio film) which contains exactly the sameappalling rigid acting from young Leonardo and practically the sameplot line! Boy meets girl, girl already engaged or to be engaged with afatal divide, in R+J it's the family divide (Montigues and Capulets),in titanic it is the barrier between the rich and the poor, the onlyreason this desecration of Shakespeares work (Romeo and Juliet + Boat)sold is because it had special effects involving the sinking of theliner 'The Titanic', THAT was it's USP, what else is there? The story?Already covered that. The acting? Hell no. A girl in one of my classesat college was praising the writer on such an imaginative story: " Howdid he come up with the idea of creating this story of a large shipsinking AND adding love." Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't base thisreview on one silly girls remark, but if you reverse that, there was nocreativity in it, the only creativity involved was part of thetarnishing of the past of REAL people who were on the boat, the man whoshot himself for killing a passenger, IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! He gave hislife to save others... Where is the conscience of the Hollywood pigswho tainted this guys past? The best part of this film was the end, andI love this film solely for the sweet consolation of the absolutepoorness of this film that is the drawn out death of the character thatis Jack Dawson.
Aside from being widely historically inaccurate (the whole "Are there enoughlifeboats?" thing--nobody asked that question on that ship, numerous otherflukes), the film was horribly written and badly acted. Depended too heavilyon Leonardo DeCaprio's brief rise to superstardom among 13 year old girls(whatever happened to that guy?). But it won a buccoo amount of Oscars, andthis is just my opinion. But still, the sheer naive sense of it detractsfrom the entire film.--Bud Sturguess, Texas
An astoundingly brilliant film that must be seen by all movie fans.Raised the bar significantly with a perfect combination of specialeffects and emotion thanks to great acting by Leonardo DiCaprio andKate Winslet. Its easy to see that the 2 of them had a great on and offscreen chemistry. The success of the film however is down to JamesCamerons meticulous direction and dedication, undoubtedly his bestfilm. At a cost of 200m it was the most expensive film ever made whenreleased in 1997. When watching the film I forget that the ship ismainly computer generated and the waves arn't real. I was swept alongby the sheer spectacle of the film. Three hours of film that neverleads the audience astray and has a final one and a half hours that isthe most gripping of any epic I have ever seen. The most successfulfilm of all time doing 1.8 billion at the box office world wide andwinning 11 Oscars. It deserves all the success it has had and is a truemasterpiece. If you haven't seen it, see it! p.s get the specialedition DVD,preferably 5 disc
I loved the story but felt that Leo De caprio was miss cast he was tooyoung looking to play the part, and Kate Winslet was too mature lookingto fall for him, after all we all knew the ending but there was no realsexual chemistry between the pair no bite, and it showed in the film itwas a script that any actor could have done because the history of thetragedy sold the film not who appeared in it I personally would havechose, Colin Firth to play the male lead part, don't get me wrongcaprio was brilliant in the Mask, beach but he did not suite theTitanic, the special effects were brilliant and educational for historypurposes you can't go wrong, because the scene where he draws her nakedmade you squirm had he seemed too young to be there
I'm sorry folks. You can't rate a movie based on teenage emotions. Yes,the special effects were great, but that's where it stops. Awfulsoundtrack, awful acting, and much less a story that should remain in thehistory books only. This movie is much like a Camaro, Mustang, orCavalier...maybe it wouldn't be so bad if it had anything unique about it,but, oh well, it didn't.
I love the story of the RMS Titanic. Love it so much that I myself cannotfully fathom why, so I've long since stopped questioning it, and went withit.I especially love the stories of the Titanic's people. God how I loved tohear people like Eva Hart, Ruth Becker Blanchard, Edith Brown Haisman,Milvina Dean...you name 'em, talking in a documentary or reading theirvarious accounts.I was so enthusiastic about the Titanic, I wrote to the man who discoveredher, Dr. Robert D. Ballard (yes, he replied, and answered my questions.Geeis he a nice person! :-) )Yes, I am a dyed-in-the-wool Titanic buff. But I HATE, nay DETEST this movie. In fact, I consider it the ultimateexample of Hollywood abomination of history.NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING can JUSTIFY what was done to the real historyinthe film, especially as it pertained to the most important element of it:the Titanic's real-life PEOPLE. Indeed, the beautiful recreation of theTitanic cut both ways in that it made the film an even worse travesty ofhistory while being the only good thing about this clunker at the sametime. The fictional characters are, in a word, awful. In fact, they are soawfulas to be laughable.Jack Dawson, Calvin Hockley, Ruth and Rose DeWit Bukutor, SpicerLovejoy...the whole lot of them are CARICTURES, not characters.(It was claimed that Jack and Rose "humanized" the Titanic saga. As NeroWolfe would say, phooey! They didn't even come within screaming distanceofhumanizing the Titanic saga they were so awful.)What is more, while careful attention to detail was paid in the creationofthe ship sets and other visual details, such attentionalsowas a key part in making "Titanic" a double exploitation picture. How's that?"Titanic" exploited the appeal of the Titanic story as well as the youthmarket by cutting open the real history of the Titanic story and plunkingdown a love story in it's place with a hot couple as the lead charactersplayed by a hunk and a babe that were sure to win the attention of anyandall teen (and non-teen) viewers. Thus, the film wound up being a Frankenstien monster. Profitable, to besure, but still a Frankenstien monster. The beautiful recreation of theTitanic as she looked in her prime dramatically contrasting with the awfulteen exploitation story set aboard her in place of the realhistory.Even worse, it was obviously known that if the film had a true to historydepitction of the Titanic's real people in the background of the lovestory,it would distract from what was inteneded to be the film's bread andbutterat the box office: Jack and Rose's romance. So a crass tactic wasemployed:misinterpretation and assasination of the characters of those like CaptainSmith, First Officer Murdoch, Molly Brown, and others while downplaying tothe hilt the actions of real-life heroes like Second Officer Lightoller,Marconi Marine operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride, and WallaceHartleyand the other members of the Titanic's band, and even editing out thoselikeMajor Arthur Peuchen and Arthur Rostron, skipper of the valorus Titanicrescue ship, RMS Carpathia, just so Jack and Rose could stand out.Especially Jack, the so-called "hero" of the story (Jack D. is theULTIMATEawful "hero" in a bad story EVER, but I digress. What is more, the stories of all of the above real-life people-eithierindividually, or combined-beat the living heck out of the contrivedfictional characters and story in "Titanic" ANY day.)Not to mention how the tragic, unsavory, and controversial actions of the"ship that stood still" and didn't come to the Titanic'said, the S.S. Californian, were bleached out entirely save for one (deleted)scene. In closing, no excuse, no matter how smoothly phrased, can expunge howthisclunker so adroitly exploited the teen market as well as the appeal of theTitanic saga...and all at the expense of over 1,500 people who died in alonely patch of ocean decades ago when a madien voyage they were enjoyingwent mad.DOWN with this guilded abomination of the Titanic saga and UP with theREALhistory I say!
This movie is the saddest i have ever seen if you like a tear dropperthis is a movie you should see.You probably need a tissue box rightnext to you if you don't like sad movies or just cry at movies that youthink are sad. I think you would like it,its sad. It takes place in1919 if you have never seen it. If you think Lednardo DeCaprio is hotthen you should see this its when he was young. If you have seen MeetJoe Black that is what he looks like. If you like history then this isa must see movie for you guys. If you like to be on a ship then see itthe movie takes place on a ship through out the whole movie its self. There is some nude seen's in the movie to its very long movie to diskDVD.
Fantastic setting and good music. However the plot is trite and acting is contrived. Kate gave superb performance in the 1996 movie "Jude". Her performance is dissapointing here though it's much better than the actor. The movie's success is, in my opinion, very much undeserved.
Spoilers ahead.I am writing this after its recent performance in certainpolls.I don't think this deserves to go down as the worst film ever, especiallyina poll that includes both Pearl Harbour and Battlefield Earth, (though tobehonest the lack of votes may be more to do with a lack of viewers. Now behonest, how many of you have actually watched it, eh). However, I am not convinced that it should go down as the greatest movieever. In my humble opinion, there no movie deserves thataward. One of the accusations leveled at the director, is its use of someclichedcharacters and events. You know the stuff, the poor, but noble steerage, therich but decedent 1st class. Well to be fair to James Cameron, theseclichesare as much apart of the Titanic legend as the sinking itself. In actualfact it would have been near on impossible not to includethem. So on to the movie itself. It's central narrative is provided by the character of Rose. HoweverCamerondoesn't allow this to stop him showing over, important events andconversations. Even, in the case of conversations on the bridge, there isnoway or reason for her to be present. The movie contains three separate, but interwoven, strands.Firstly, of course there is the story of the ship and its sinking.Secondaryyou have the romance between Jack and Rose. Lastly you have the savageoperation.Titanics story is handled fairly well. More could have be made ofsubplots,Ismay's part in the ships operations for instance. This said it containsenough to satisfy anyone with a casual interest, and to be honest thespecial effects go a long way to make up for this. The second strand, the romance between Rose, a 1st class passenger, andJackDawson, a steerage passenger, is in my eyes the weakest part of themovie. However I fear that this was more than likely there to help the film getthegreen light. Ladies looks aware now, fellas, hands up if you cheered whenDiCaprio's copse sank near the end?Lastly, the strand that pulls it altogether. An 102 year old Rose'stellingof the story on board the Calvish. Well I liked this idea. Although itsnotoriginal, it gave the movie some focus, and allowed facts to be spoken, without it breaking up the flow of the dialogue. This also allows forsomeflashy but impressive editing. Namely moving from the wreck to an intactTitanic, and vice versa. So what, you may with justification ask, is my verdict. Well to behonest, like the curates egg of legend, good in parts, but still enjoyable. Nowallit needs is a proper, well thought out DVD special edition.
Your average American loves Titanic. This is why they are consideredaverage. This movie is unimpressive in every possible way. From the blandacting to the bland script this movie is, well, bland. The script, by theway, was co-written by James Cameron and the captain of the girl'stether-ball team from the local junior high school. The only extraordinary thing about this film is the special effects. Aboat sinks. A really big boat. It looks really really real. Butit's still just a boat sinking. Not that exciting. All in all this is a movie geared towards illiterate12 year old girls.
ha! this movie was fantastic....i don't understand how people could notlike it i mean...its pure brilliance.....it deserves 10 hands down...iwill admit i cried....like a baby....and so did my girlfriend....but itwas great i really felt like i knew the characters and thats not commonin movies of today....I've seen it i don't know how many times and theend still gets me...also the music...like it or not....wasperfect.....beautiful.....its a great love story...had meintwined.....every time i watch it it has the same effect i cant keepmy eyes off the screen...and if u have never seen it i suggest youdo...this movie is great
This movie is excellent.`Titanic` is a poetic impulse. The directioninspires respect and hope. Cameron is very talented (see `The Abyss`) Rose`sand Jack`s personalities inspire me. Kate is an amazing actress, her actingin every movie is a exceptional phenomenon with emotional result. SIMPLYTHE BEST.
The scene of the Titanic rising out of the ocean as a wreck and becoming, once again, the floating palace she was, is, I grant you, a cinematicmarvel. When Cameron sticks to the facts, the movie is good, but Icouldn'twork up any sympathy for the fictionalized hero and heroine. There weresomany real heroes and heroines during that particular sea disaster, whyfocuson two fictionalized characters? The movie ended up being a maudlindisaster epic.
I was going to see a movie one snowy night in December. My friend suggestedTomorrow Never Dies but I was wanting to see Titanic sence last summer. Iwas expecting a disaster movie but I got a lot more. This movie takes you tothe ship in 1912. You're there. You see it. You feel it. It's actually likeyou'r ea part of the movie. This movie wasn't really all that great in scriptwriting, but how many are? Most guys say this movie sucked and had no point.I think they just weren't man enough to admit it. If you feel like relivinghistory, than you should see this. The end is so creepy because you feellike you're there. You can't help wonder what it was like for those unluckypassengers. The effects of the ship sinking was VERY realistic and thismovie was definitely worth the 200 million it took to make it. I admit theend is sad but that makes it all the more realistic. It's one of thegreatest movies of all time and the most successful of all time and one of myfavorites of all time.Relive the past and see this movie.
People get mad when they find that their girlfriends have seen this movie10times and they come here give it bad ratings to get even. These samepeople, make Lord Of the Rings, the most BORING movie of all time, the 3rdbest movie. SHAME. I just noticed that Titanic is not even in the 100 bestmovies list. If you don't like the romance, the people getting crushedwillkeep you on the edge of your seat. Don't like violence? the story willkeepyou interested. my point is that it has something for all tastes and amovie like that deserves more credit than 7.0. and who ever voted 10 forLord of the Rings has my pitty.
