Great fantasy.

This review is from: Time Bandits (Special Edition 2 Disc Set) (DVD) I have read other reviews of this DVD that weren't too kind and I just don't understand that. Maybe they should just watch Barney. This is among the best fantasy films of all-time. Python meets Wizard of OZ. A bargain at twice the price!

Very Stupid Movie

This movie must be over-hyped by someone connected with the movie itself. It is incredibly dumb. The Stars promoted John Cleese, etc.) have very small roles in the movie. John Cleese in only in the movie for a very very few minutes, and is not funny at all. The main characters are the Little People (Midgets). Its a total waste of time, very stupid, and certainly a waste of money. Buy ANY OTHER MOVIE on Amazon.....it will be at least 10 times better than this VERY STUPID MOVIE.

TIME BANDITS

Delightful, enjoyable fantasy movie for adults and children alike! .... CLASSIC .... Lovable, endearing characters, apart from the Villian (smiles), YOU WON'T SOON FORGET ..... Unfortunately, ending is left to one's imagination.

Watch "Labyrinth" instead...

Terry Gilliam Time Travel MovieWeird movie about a kid who teams up with a pack of time traveling dwarveswho meet various celebrity cameos on their way through the folds of time(including John Cleese, Michael Palin--who co-wrote the script--and SeanConnery in a rather embarrassing role. Tell me: Why in the world is hespeaking English? You have to see the movie to understand what Imean.)Can someone say, "Boring"? How about, "Stupid"? A lot of people like thisstuff, but then again, I never liked Terry Gilliam's "Brazil," either. Ididn't laugh a single time at either of these two motion pictures. To me,they're just weird combinations of half-full ideas and crazy worlds. Thisstuff just doesn't interest me at all.** out of *****

Remember, before you grew up and knew it doesn't happen?

Time Bandits is the adventure story you dreamed of, where you escaped through your bedroom wall and traveled through your favorite books. You'll recognize childhood toys, fears, wishes, even the dark uncertainties about what will happen next as the floor drops out from under you. You'll find yourself reflecting on the pathos of the ending, for instance. And the deeper story behind the Agamemnon sequence (easily the sexiest role Sean Connery ever had.) You don't have to understand everything the first time you see it--that's what makes art so enjoyable. You will find yourself quoting this movie over and over, things like "I'm not entirely dim". But kids will enjoy it too--after all, the protagonists are all their height!

One of my favorite childhood memories

I first watched this film in 1981 or 1982. We had just subscribed tocable, and it appeared on heavy rotation on Showtime. I was 7 yearsold. British kids + midgets = a winning combination.Watching the film as an adult, I can clearly see the Monty Pythonconnection, but back then, I had no idea that Terry Gilliam was acohort of the MP gang. I just loved the George Harrison theme song, andthe wild adventures a quiet, imaginative boy, like myself, could getinto.Certain things escaped me then, "Pansy! The problem! I must havefruit!" Now I know what they were talking about! The action was greatthe cameo by Sean Connery was superb. Having recently seen Alien, watching Ian Holm as Napoleon was a trip.Stands up well even today. If you like them weird, Time Bandits doesnot disappoint!

time is a great adventure

I'm a long time fan of Gilliam and the Time Bandits and highly recommend this film. The widescreen version isn't actually widescreen. It's the T.V. formatted version with black bars covering the top and bottom of the screen. Instead of more picture, it's less picture! Caveat emptor!

gnarly movie dudes!

Great movie, lots of imagination, back when you didn't need high techstuffto make up for lack of it. I enjoyed it when I was younger and I stillenjoyit! Despite what some people commented on sean connery's appearance, Ithinkhe did an outstanding job as king agamemnon/ reincarnated as the fireman, his quote " you're a very lucky boy" is still in my head.

The Most Fabulous Object in The Universe

Brilliant plot. God's helpers, far from angels, grew tired of "developing" the universe for piss-poor wages. And, having all of 6 days to create the whole of creation, there were some "holes" connecting one time/dimension to another. So, they sort of "borrowed" the map of all these "holes" from the Supreme Being, and sort of ran off in high-spirits. They meet up with Napoleon, Robin Hood, Agamemnon the Great, the S.S. Titanic, the Texas Rangers, and finally, according to plan, Evil, himself, and then the Man who saves the day, The Supreme Being (God). All this in an effort to become "stinking rich". "Here's to stinking rich!" This is my favorite movie of all time. "We risk EVERYTHING! We win BIG!"

Absolutely excellent movie with imaginative ideas, great cameos and a hilarious script.

After I had seen a video on YouTube with a clip from the film, Ithought it wouldn't look all that good. But when I found it inWoolworth's I bought it anyway since it was only £2 and now I figuredI'm going to be watching it for quite a long time. This is a brilliantfilm with Gilliam's usual idea of giving all the big stars cameo roles. It has quite a curious ending, but otherwise it's a great movie thatmade me laugh about fifty or more times. It's perfect for fans ofPython, too. It's cameos include John Cleese, Sean Connery, Ian Holm,Ralph Richardson and many more. Man, that Terry Gilliam, along with TimBurton, is certainly my favourite film director, and after you watchthis, he'll probably be yours as well.

Ah, British humor...

Yes, I know Terry Gilliam is an American, and when I first saw this film as a kid I was like, "What the...?" But I recently rented it again for my 8-year-old son who enjoyed it. We get to see Kenny Baker (R2D2), John Cleese as Robin Hood, Michael Palin as the Man who Keeps Trying to Pop the Question to Shelley Duvall, and the late David Rappaport, who, in my opinion, has one of the best lines in movie history: "Waiter! More champagne...and plenty of ice" just before their ship, the Titanic, hits the 'berg.

Never mind them: Time Bandits is a GREAT film!

My uncle first introduced this movie to me a long time ago! Afterwards I thought it was weird for a couple of reasons. The first was that it was directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python and the other was the kooky plot and characters. But they were reasons to make me watch the movie. I fell in love with it after a couple of viewings. I have to praise Terry Gilliam for directing Heath Ledger in his last role after The Dark Knight. The Criterion DVD is still good by the way. Despite the non-anamorphic transfer, this is still a good DVD. Criterion does a fantastic job with their titles and this one is no disappointment. Hey, the movie was released in 1981 and you gotta give it that. I did want to get the Special Edition from Anchor Bay, but the Criterion version spotted my eyes first and the rest is history. I have the Criterion DVD of Time Bandits! And the day after tomorrow...... THE WORLD!!! AHAHAHA!!!

Blu-Ray done poorly by Image Entertainment

This review is from: Time Bandits [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Time Bandits is one of my all time favorite films. I was excited to find this on Blu-Ray. Then I saw that it was listed as 1080i on the packaging and was concerned. Why on Earth would a company release a feature film as 1080i on a blu-ray disc? Apparently this is the standard format for films put out on blu-ray by Image Entertainment as they've done this with several other major films they've released. With a business model like that, I doubt they'll last. The print's color is much better than the old DVD I had, and the image is nowhere near as dark. HOWEVER, the image seems to have simply been artificially lightened to make it less dark and the result is that the dark areas show blocking, compression noise, and artifacts. What was MOST disturbing is that no attempt has been made to give us a clean print! This blu-ray disc shows tons of dust flecks and scratches in many scenes throughout the film, and there's even a splice shown that for a single frame has half of one frame and half of another, with the splice line clearly seen on screen. This was obviously taken from a projection print that is worn and damaged and not given the care and attention that it properly deserved. The film has been released in other countries as 1080p with less compression and on dual layer blu-ray discs. This U.S. version by Image Entertainment is not that same quality. As usual, the U.S. market is treated poorly. Why can't someone get this disc right?

Fascinating and funny, can be watched time and again.

I love this movie. The fantasy it contains - the Map, thetime travel, the places the characters travel to - the humour, thecreativity ofthe storyline, the way the basic fact of the movie (time-space gates)givesthe author the ability to take his characters to so many differentplaces -ancient Greece, modern England, Napoleanic France, the Time ofLegends. And it's one of those rare movies I can watch again andagain.

this is as good as it gets

In the world of sci-fi comedy this is as good as it gets. I have to admitthat I'm a lifelong fan of little people in movies, and I'm in the beginningstages of writing a book about this subject. If anyone is in touch withDavid Rappaport, Jack Purvis, or any of the other little people actorsinvolved, please get in touch at my email adress above. That said, I'd liketo lambast the comment that was posted on IMDB saying Sean Connerycontributed the low note to the film. I'm not sure which movie that guy waswatching. I'm not the hugest Connery fan (especially his lame modernmovies, Entrapment was just awful) but in this role he had the right warmth, humor, and power to play Agammemnon. This movie is very silly, and that'all part of the fun, so I don't think it was a method performance oranything like that, OK?, give the guy a break. Connery had been way tooserious up to that point in his career. Anyway, I love all the actors,Gilliam is as usually absolutely perfect and very inventive. This is thebest "midget" movie of all time (yes, even better than the Wizard of Oz andUnder the Rainbow) because it shows the little people as real human beings. Even though there is not much time for characterization given the huge castof character actors/cameo stars, each of the bandits has his own personalitythat contributes to the chemistry of the group. The boy who plays Kevin ispretty bad, but I never think the term "actor" should be applied tochildren. A final note: I could swear that when I first saw this movie in Virginiawhen it came out (I was 6) the soundtrack on the movie included "Let's GetPhysical" by Olivia Newton John. This might just be the effect of my youthat the time, I don't know but if anyone else remembers this, let me know,OK? :)

Great movie

It's full of great parts. It makes you laugh ...at certain spots, and at others it has you on the edge of your seat. Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin did a great job on this. It's completely worth buying. You watch it, and you wanna watch it again just to see the little tidbits you missed before.

The holes in the universe

A film about a boy and a group of dwarves with a map of all the holes in time? This has to be Terry Gilliam!Note that although amazon.com lists starring Sean Connery, but although he's in it, he's only a cameo. The real stars of this film are the kid, Kevin, and the dwarves. There's a whole lot of other cameos such as Shelly Duvall, Ian Holm, and Sir Ralph Richardson as God.TRIVIA: The song in the final credits is "Dream Away" by the late Geroge Harrison, which appears on his hard to find "Gone Troppo" album.

My kids liked it a little bit...

I really enjoyed this film when it first played in the theaters some20 years ago. It was one of my favorite fantasy adventure movies. But as I watched it on video, it seemed slow, repetitive, and too long. Maybeit's because I am much older, (65), and this kind of movie is less interesting to me now, or maybe I didn't notice these things on first viewing. Nevertheless, I like the bookends to the film better than it'sbody. I think most children today will become bored, as movies in thisgenre move much faster and have better effects. It was good for it's time though.

Watch out for widescreen VHS

I'm posting this warning for the second time because the original is hidden by a bunch of DVD reviews: the widescreen VHS version is not really widescreen. It is the TV formatted version with black bars placed across the top and bottom!

One of the 80's GREATEST!

This film was one my favorite films of the 80's. I loved it then and love it now. I purchased the regular dvd from amazon a couple years ago and it was just fine. For those who watched it in the theater remember to listen to the song when the credits roll. I remember sitting in the theater as George Harrison's song "Dream Away" just enhanced the film I had just seen. I sat there until the music ended. Mum, Dad, it's evil, don't touch it! Oh goodness, this was a great film.
