The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.
I'm really trying to figure out why this movie is currently rated at7.2. I mean...it's OK. Even as comic book movies go, this is justsilly. I think what floors me the most is that Natalie Portman signedon to do this. Not that she's above making questionable movies, Itypically see her as a more serious actress. And it's directed byKenneth Branagh? Anyone who's seen a Shakespeare movie in the last 20years has likely seen Branagh's work, so to see him stoop to this levelis pretty disappointing. While the movie is a bit of fun, I just can't see the point to thewhole thing. Yes, I know they have to make it so they can put anAvengers movie together eventually. But the movie just essentially putsThor on Earth with no powers and...well...that's it. He just sort ofhangs out while the main story plays out in Asgard (in what appears tobe a giant pipe organ). Worst of all, instead of the movie providingany type of satisfactory ending and giving you the setup for theaforementioned Avengers movie, it sets up a clear sequel. And that tome is just a waste of time since nothing happened here. I don'tknow...it's a bit of fun in some cases, but overall it's just over thetop, silly, and kind of pointless.
The Marvel movies of the past years have had only one disappointment, and that was with "Hulk" which starred Eric Bana. Thor can be added tothe past Marvel films that have made a mark on the cinematic world. Iam not a hardcore fan when it comes to the Thor Comic books, but I knowhim well enough to know what the film version should include. While there is much to work with for the film I was still wary as tohow they would pursue the film version and make Thor as successful asIron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and so on; but they did it splendidlyand the end result is a fantastic movie experience with amazing stuntsand graphics. The storyline was solid moving from the Asgard to Earth made the moviemuch more interesting then having it set in one world. The sets wereelaborate, beautiful, and very appropriate for the Norse Gods; and ontop of that the futuristic style of the costumes added more to the setsand really brought the characters to life. Another aspect that made themovie was beside the heavyweight actors such as Natalie Portman,Stellan Skarsgard, and Anthonly Hopkins, brought relatively unknownactors to the big screen which added a sense a mystery as to what theaudience can expect from the cast.Chris Hemsworth was fantastic, i'meager to see him in the Avengers; the performances from his friends(Sif,Loki...)complimented his performance brilliantly. But I believethe film to be complete with Darcy (Kat Dennings) she made the moviefunny in all the right places. With that I give this movie a 9/10 because as great as the movie was,it was not perfect some small flaws were, and I know that this is mean, but Natalie actually bugged me at times with her performance. I feltthat she was too serious an actress to do this type of film, but asstated it wasn't a horrible performance from her just momentaryinstances where I was like "oh my god." But like anything else its amatter of opinion and preference to which everyone is entitled to. Butenjoy the movie for it is a fun and wild ride.
This film was lousy from the get go, by the numbers, formulaic, big, dumb, loud, Shakespearean, big budget, blond, big muscles, big hammer, duh!I'm getting tired of superhero films. When i was a kid I always wanted to see my favorite comic books on screen. Now, I wish they would all just go away. They're all the same. When I saw the ice creatures and Anthony Hopkins with his throw in "Lord of the Ringish" accent as Odin, combined with the "thees", "thous", and "nays" I knew this would be no more than an excuse to show how something this juvenile and superficial would look in 3d. Thor, himself, is about as hulking and juvenile as Dom in Fast and the Furious, i.e. he exists only to show his big muscles and to fight and to look cool doing it. The first hour of the film is supposed to set up the romance between the Asgardian Thor--whose father emasculated him and banished to Earth--and Natalie Portman who's supposed to be a storm chaser or something, I don't remember. After an hour of getting to know Thor as a human being, he recovers his lost hammer and becomes the god of thunder again and defeats the enemy. Would like to say more about the movie but that's it, sorry. A complete waste of money. Rent only if there's nothing else in the store.
I feel that the sequel to this movie is almost destined to flop, if adeal can't be agreed that sees Kenneth Branagh return to direct.... Initially I thought handing him the job was a mistake, but afterjudging on the merits of the entire film, I'm confident that I totallyunderstand the choice... Both he and one of his stars (Anthony Hopkins)know how to sell bombastic speeches and make them inspirational ratherthan hyperbolic. Some people don't understand the intrinsic linkbetween Shakespeare and comic-books (numerous academics have statedthat if Shakespeare were alive today, then in their opinion he would bewriting serials/soap operas... ) If they don't get someone in charge who knows how to grace age-oldthemes with a light touch, then Thor 2 could well sink like a stone... This is an epic in the truest sense of the word, just with CGI to fillin the story pockets that exist around the basic accomplishment ofgoals... If the technology had existed to create awe-inspiring sightsusing machinery, then it's not unreasonable to think that thestorytellers of their time would have used them... Good old fashionedgrand conflict never changes, though, and Branagh seems to have aninstinctive understanding of this principle.
This review is from: THOR (Amazon Instant Video) Ranks down there with the Punisher and Ang Lee's Hulk. If you wanna have more fun go watch Limitless or Paul. I realize we are still in the Dark Ages and all but the whole point of escapism is just that... to escape a dumbed-down mindless 2 dimensional planet ... you want action watch Chocolate or Ip Man or something that doesn't just imitate the vacuum of deep space.Rule #1: When watching a bad movie ALWAYS be prepared to spend another two hours finding a suitable antidote flick to cleanse the cerebral palate of the bland taste of being teased by the promise of infinite technological possibilities juxtaposed against the never ending acceptance of cheese.... (& processed at that)
Greetings again from the darkness. Upfront admission: I am not a Thorcomic book expert. Many people are and I fully appreciate their take onthis film will be much different from mine. I can only judge this movieon the basic background knowledge I have and the final product on thescreen.Let's start with the good stuff. Chris Hemsworth makes a terrific Thor.If I had his looks and build, I would certainly consider myself aNordic God. Heck, I might even carry around a hammer just for fun!Thor, son of Odin, is all set to be named King of Asgard until hisquick-temper and love of battle cause a break in the peace accord withthe Frost Giants. His dad, Odin, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins is nonetoo pleased with his hot-headed son. Not only does he renege on thepromise to name him King, but he strips his power and casts him down toEarth ... specifically New Mexico. For some reason, all alien portalslead to New Mexico. You can tell it's a been a bad day for Thor becausehe lands in the middle of nowhere and is promptly run over by a sciencelab van driven by Natalie Portman.Other good stuff: Idris Elba as Heimdall, the gatekeeper, is excellent;there is a cameo by Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye - a teaser for TheAvengers movie next year; Jamie Alexander shows some chops as Sif;Clark Gregg is back as Agent Coulson; some of the special effects arepretty cool ... the Frost Giants are very detailed and The Destroyerlooks like Iron Man on metallic steroids; and lastly, Kat Dennings hasa couple of sharp lines as Portman's assistant. Ms. Dennings was superbin "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist".OK, the not so good stuff: I am beginning to despise 3-D (it addsnothing, while diminishing the brightness of colors); Jotunheim (landof the Frost Giants) is just plain, gray and boring; Natalie Portman, fresh off an Oscar is just terrible as an astro-physicist with ateenage crush on Thor; Tom Hiddleston as Loki is one of the weakestvillains I have ever seen in a super-hero/comic book movie; Rene Russomust not have read the script prior to accepting her role - she hasabout 3 lines and is totally wasted.Despite the weaknesses, I found the movie to be entertaining enoughthanks to the scenes with Thor and Odin. The ambitious son being showntough love by his father is a missing element in much of society today.Guess it takes a Nordic God to show us how. The scenes with Portman arepainful to watch, but I believe there is enough to keep the comic bookfans and just about anyone else entertained.Directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is best known for his Shakespeare andstage work, the movie does have a little different look and feel fromthe average superhero movie. Still, I wouldn't put it in the class ofBatman, Spider-man, or Iron Man. We do get the expected Stan Lee cameoand the end-of-the-credits appearance of Samuel L Jackson. Up next,Captain America!
Looking at the whole of the Marvel universe, Thor would have to be theblack sheep. For one thing, he's the Norse god of thunder. His world Âthe realm of Asgard  is completely foreign to us, as is most Norsemythology. Greek mythology, maybe, but definitely not Norse. As for thehero himself, similar to Superman, he possesses inherent power andimmortality and wields as brute an arrogance as his mighty hammer. Inother words: hard to identify with and hard to like. Yet under KennethBranagh's direction, the worlds of magical legend and that of thecontemporary superhero manage to find a common ground through humor andrelatable themes of familial conflict. Channeled through ChrisHemsworth's bravado and highly aware performance, "Thor" manages tostand tall as a hero's journey among all else, a trait that serves asits saving grace.Bouncing back and forth between Asgard and modern day New Mexico,"Thor" tells the story of how the young arrogant king-to-be of Asgardreignited a long-ended war between his people and the evil Frost Giantsand was therefore banished to Earth by his father Odin (Hopkins). Now amortal on Earth, Thor seeks to reclaim his power and the throne withthe help of an astro-physicist (Portman), while his younger brotherLoki (Hiddleston) plans to secure his own place as ruler.Thor's personal quest as well as the conflict between him, his fatherand Loki provide the film's true lifeblood. The three give the film'sbest performances, and though familial treachery rates far fromoriginal storytelling, there's a reason these Shakespearean plots havebeen around forever. Hiddleston thrives here as the story's mostcomplex character, which is a title more often given to someone otherthan the villain in a superhero film. His transformation fromuntrustworthy worm to full-on bad guy feels complete thanks to the wayHiddleston seizes every moment of screen time. But that doesn't mean he overshadows our golden-maned hero. Hemsworthshows a definitive comfort as a leading man, happily commanding theattention that ought to be demanded of an actor playing a god. It helpsthat he's 20 different kinds of jacked and therefore physicallyappropriate for the role, but he shows surprising depth. In theJotunheim (Frost Giants' planet) sequence, the one that gets Thor introuble with Dad, he infuses a childish innocence into his untemperedpride, and we become more apt to root for his predestined change ofcharacter rather than despise his arrogance. Although the writers givehim one too many shouts of "Noooo!" during the film, he makes itconvincing, especially when he comes to the realization that he simplycannot take back his hammer, Mjolnir, or his powers through simple useof force.Speaking of force, Hemsworth makes the grade as an ass-kicker without adoubt, yet the action sequences leave a bit of something to be desiredin terms of excitement and creativity. But while Branagh might not be astudent of action filmmaking, he never loses sight of what's at stake. The writers have ensured that the action sequences feel necessaryrather than like needless fluff; the tension of the story keeps thefights engaging and Branagh retains focus on the characters involved. The element of the script that will divide opinion the most will likelybe its humor. Kat Dennings' character carries the brunt of the comicrelief as Darcy, an intern for Portman's Jane Foster and StellanSkarsgÃ¥rd's Erik Selvig. Sometimes it goes a bit too far, but I wouldalmost label her as crucial: she helps keep "Thor" from getting tooserious to be taken seriously. "Thor" contains a lot of talk aboutmagic, science and rainbow bridges; it helps to have a character thattakes all of it lightly and also breaks the rhythm of what would be anall-too-typical "girl meets boy fallen from the sky" love story betweenJane and Thor.At the same time, Hemsworth ends up being the funniest of anyone. Hedoesn't even flinch as he proclaims his enjoyment of a cup of coffeeand smashes the mug on the floor demanding another. He doesn't play itup for laughs or try and act confused by why it's not acceptablebehavior: he lets it be part of who he is. Branagh and the script alsodo a nice job using humor to break the awkwardness that occurs when theWarriors Three and Sif (Asgard's best fighters) come to Earth lookingfor Thor. Their extravagant costumes look simply awful out of thecontext and set design of Asgard that one of the film's pivotal actionsequences that follows would've lost all sense of credibility withoutsome self-aware humor. Considering the potential for "Thor" to be alaughingstock in this manner, it's actually impressive how wellBranagh, cast and crew handled the clash of fantasy and reality. The only significant chunk of the film that didn't quite hit was thelove story. Despite being excellent in the role, Portman had no reasonto take the part of Jane Foster. She's criminally underused in the filmand rather one-dimensional. She cares about her life's work and issmitten with Thor. Their scenes together are nice, but hardly serve toup the stakes when Thor returns to Asgard for the final showdown. Mycuriosity for a "Thor" sequel definitely hinges more so on wanting tosee Asgard and its realms more fully realized than wanting to knowwhether Thor and Jane can keep their flame alive despite being worldsapart. But no matter how many misfires you can find in certain aspects of thefilm, its devotion to its core conflict and character arcs helps makeeverything more entertaining. The plot of "Thor" remains simple andpure; a lesson in humility that few summer blockbusters are everwilling to learn.~Steven CVisit my site at http://moviemusereviews.com
The sets, special effects are just what you would expect form a majorHollywood movie. It looks great. In particular I loved the ice giantsthey were the best thing in the movie. What I struggled with was a mythical god-like being, if not actually agod, who grins a lot, is rather polite and lacks all presence apartfrom his muscular development which on its own doesn't carry it. Idon't think it is because Helmsworth can't act. But the fellow is meantto be Thor, that is THOR!!!!! Not someone who might ask if you wantfries with that.A little bit of grimness, perhaps a little bit of age might havehelped. Shouldn't he be a few thousand years old at least? He doesstart off a bit rash but his big character change occurs, seemingly, because he had a single beer with a fellow of Scandinavian origin.Certainly there was nothing in the Natalie Portman relationship thatengendered any interest of need to reassess his approach to life. Infact the gorgeous Natalie was rather irrelevant. The Asgardians themselves were good whilst in Asgard but out of thatcontext they looked rather ridiculous and with entirety of the Earthaction all taking place in what looked like a back lot we really neededto get back to Asgard asap.So yes it looks great (mostly) and there is plenty of action, if that'swhat you want but when it was finished I was not looking forward to thesequel. I really didn't care although if they bring back the frostgiants I'd watch them. In fact secretly I was cheering for them allalong. They had the menaces and gravitas that Thor lacked.
Thor is weak. Too much fake and bad visual effects and ridiculos actions. What is the main actor, a Brad Pitt mixed with a ...??? And Natalie Portman is completely lost. Bad movie and I saw in Blu-ray.
Thor wasn't a bad film, there was definitely a brilliant film in theresomewhere but poor pacing, bad editing and marvel studios obsessionwith trying to shoehorn in avenger references ultimately left mefeeling underwhelmed and somewhat disappointed. To keep this simple i'll start with the characters/actor, then the plotand finally the directing.Characters - Thor in my opinion was perfectly cast, hems-worth not onlylooks the part but acted the part. He played cocky, vulnerable, angryall perfectly well and it was a treat to see him on screen and see himdevelop across the duration of the film (all to brief). Loki stole the show by a long shot although I didn't quite feel theycaptured entirely the mischievous nature of his character. Hiddlestongave the best performance by a mile and you could genuinely feel hispain and anguish and it was hard not to root for his cause, he was justa boy looking for the acceptance and respect of his father. Odin played by Hopkins carried scenes with the most gravitas, i gotchills when he hissed at Loki and banished Thor,in fact any scene hewas in would always get a smile from me. Hopkins is by far my favouriteand most resilient actor working today. The biggest let down of this film was Natalie port man, she has actingchops but unfortunately she didn't show them here, i couldn't reallyfully believe her character. As for the rest of the cast they were mostly forgettable, with idrisElba's character shining through the most but he was criminallyunderutilised. Stellan skaarsgard should be given a tip of the hat, heplayed his character brilliantly and was very likable but nothingastounding here. Let it also be said that Kat dennings character wastotally pointless and very irritating. She bought no humour to the filmeven though she was supposed to.The plot was on of the high points for me, this film wasn't a story ofgood vs evil to save the world, it was a story of two boys bothfighting for th affection and adoration of their father one whichtouched me, and i can say it was different to what i was used to.The film was directed brilliantly and you can tell branagh was inspiredbu del toro and snyder in scene in asgard and Dunham/ice giantlocations. For his first foray into high budget films this was anadmirable effort. I don't know who's to blame but i was reallydisappointed with the pacing of this film and it was definitely cut tokeep it;s running time below 2 hours which is a shame because thistruly could have been epic. The action scenes were fantastic which iswhy its such a shame that everything else was so cut so half arsed, rushed and poorly paced.Asgard could've felt more populated, the scenes of Thor on earth werequite bland and uninspiring and i cant say i really felt anything hemsworth and portmans relationship. All in all its a brilliant summer romp but i recommend you Don't see itin 3d, because the 3d is rubbish.7/10
This review is from: Thor (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I have 16 3D Blu Ray titles in my library, including several purchased from Amazon.com. THOR is the only 3D that refuses to play on my equipment. This is a 3 disc set and the Blu Ray and DVD play as expected.
As a man in my 50's, I grew up spending a great deal of time in the Marvel universe. I have taken issue with story line deviations, when the movie alters what I consider to be a key element of the comic storyline. The whole Doctor Doom representation in the Fantastic Four movie for example. Hard to understand why they didn't stick with the original plot premise when the outcome was a less than stellar product. In Thor, however, they managed to balance this with staying true to the original. The outcome is an immersive movie experience that brings the Marvel universe to life in a more contemporary fashion. This movie succeeds on many levels and appeals to people familiar with comic book or those who are not. My wife loved the movie, yet has probably never even read a comic book. From the casting to the costuming to the acting to the scenery to the special effects here is a movie that stands up to repeated viewings. A great deal of credit has to go to the Director as well. One of the reasons this movie works so well is because it doesn't get bogged down with lengthy explanations but provides the viewer with enough background to make the story plausible and fast moving. If you like super hero/science fiction/fantasy films this one does not dissapoint. Highly recommended.
The announcement of a Thor live action movie was already a prettyblatantly bad idea from the beginning. The whole premise of 'a godlycivilization casting down one of their own who would come to save andprotect humankind' seems to have been done a hundred times in the past, taken on a variety of forms and interpretations, etc. - and as a resulthas become a rather stale and unoriginal plot. But even so, despite thehokey costumes and cheesy acting I witnessed in the trailers whichfurther diminished my faith in this film's quality, I decided to giveit a chance to prove me wrong, as I do with every other movie. And,hey, it's a Marvel production, and they've made some of my favoritesuperhero films, so why not? In short, I was sorely disappointed...moreso than I have been of any other Marvel movie in the past couple ofyears, since I thought they were back on track. My wishes for Thor tobe in the vein of previously successful Marvel flicks - such as thefirst two Spider-Man and X-Men films, Iron Man, and so forth, whichactually had some semblance of substance to them - were crushed as Iwas instead treated to a soulless cash-in movie in the vein ofunfortunate failures like Ghost Rider, Elektra, Fantastic Four, etc.which relied heavily on special effects or a star-studded cast alone tocarry the success of the films. But anyway, enough of the comparisonsand onto this movie itself...From the beginning until the end, we're treated to a non-stop barrageof overdone clichés, painfully unfunny one-liners, a linear, predictable, and uninspiring story...and various plot holes andinconsistencies. The first scene opens with Natalie Portman's characterand her crew seeing something falling from the sky and going to seewhat it is, then we're quickly thrown into the bizarre realm of Asgardwhere we're given a quick history on it's existence, along with theother realms, and Earth's part in it all.And from then on you pretty much know what happens from the trailer -bad boy Thor pisses off his dad Odin and gets banished from Asgard tolive on Earth with humans as punishment. This is about where thebeginning of the movie picked up...but now, instead of falling from thesky a distance away from Natalie Portman and her crew like hesupposedly did in that opening sequence, he lands RIGHT in front oftheir damn VEHICLE this time!! WTF? In a highly predictable series ofevents, Thor alienates everyone with his bizarreness, gets imprisonedby the government, gets rescued by his human friends, starts bondingwith them and falling for Portman's character, she starts falling forhim, blah blah blah...and in between all of this is a ton of bad actingfrom the ENTIRE cast, surprisingly, most of whom try to be amusing bytelling jokes or acting oddly, but fail miserably. The jokes areactually horrible, especially from Thor (who surprisingly gets intomore mischief than his brother Loki, who is supposedly the GOD ofmischief...), and the relationships the characters attempt to establishwith each other are either unbelievable and bland, or just plaincheesy...or a combination of all three. We're treated to a brief over-the-top action scene in the beginning ofthe film, but it isn't until about halfway through that it picks upagain, when Thor finally gets his powers back. I must say that thespecial effects during the action scenes are quite nice (as expectedfrom any marvel film), and the expansive scenery and shots of thetowering Asgard looks great, but that's about all this movie has goingfor it. And while I say that the SPECIAL EFFECTS during the actionscenes are good, the action scenes themselves are often pretty shortand boring, and of course...predictable. For example, in the finalfight between Thor and his brother Loki, the all-powerful GOD OFTHUNDER gets slapped around like a bitch by his wiry-framed brotherbefore finally, as expected, fighting back in a hormonal explosion ofrage after Loki threatens his 'Earth girlfriend'. Ooooh, how originaland intimidating....Really, it's as though everyone - the writer, the director, theactors/actresses - were all amateurs and had no idea what directionthey were going for. Did they want the characters to try and be funnyand heroic, yet turn out unfunny and lame like Thor? Did they want themto try and be mischievous (hardly) and intimidating, yet turn out to bea total bipolar wuss like Loki? In the end, it all seems to have fallenapart and we're left with a sloppy script, cliché, stereotypicalcharacters, wasted renowned actors'/actresses' talents, and a poorlydone and predictable storyline that probably would have been better offleft in comics/cartoons.Here's to hoping the next Marvel adaption is better, and they don'trely solely on the popularity of the character to overlook the film'soverwhelming amount of flaws and bring in the $$$ - which this movieseems to already be doing quite well, and will undoubtedly continue todo so. But...if this is what the mindless movie-going majority wants, then so be it... I guess I'll stick to the minority who still preferssubstance and sophistication in their superhero flicks.
This film was quite surprising, i wanted to see the film but thetrailers did not make is seem anything spectacular but after seeingthis film i can safely say it was Spectacular!. Another great adaptionof a marvel comic hero. The film starts of interesting and deliversright through, the actors who played there roles did a superb job espChris Hemsworth as Thor & Natalie Portman's role.. We follow Thor'sjourney to return to his kingdom and prove he is worthy after hisselfish ways that left him on earth, he finds a different world he didnot know and this develops him into a loyal hero. The action throughoutthe film was great with some great effects and CGI, it delivered somegreat comedy (notably the coffe scene). It was left open ended and leftaudiences wanting more to see what happens next.. there is also a aftercredit scene that again leaves unanswered questions which should beanswered in the next film. Overall a excellent movie and a greataddition to the marvel superhero franchise. 8/10
Admittedly, I'm not nor have I ever been much of a Thor fan. I've seen the character on occasion through different animated features and whatnot(even wrote reviews on a few) but never really cared for the character. Course, after seeing this film, methinks I'm going to change all that. Thor, to me, is the most visually stunning of all the Marvel films I've seen thus far. Much more epic than X-Men: First Class, sorry to say. Whilst(here I go with Thor talk, lol) I won't go so far as to say that Thor is the Summer Blockbuster of 2011, either. I will say it is a dadgum fine film that entertained me completely all the way through. I, especially, loved the more humorous moments in the film. There's some great laugh out loud moments. Yet, what amazed me most about the film was the scope and the acting in the movie....it does star Anthony Hopkins, after all. It's a great 'family' superhero movie.
I went to see Bridesmaids in theater which was sold out and saw Thor instead. I had no idea what it was even about...wow what a nice surprise! Very entertaining heroic film with lots of action for the guys and nice shirtless men for the ladies haha. I immediately put a request in for Thor Blue Ray before it was released. This is one of those movies you have to see in HD or 3D! 5 stars all the way.
This review is from: THOR [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) This was a pretty good movie and this was the first action movie I have downloaded instead of renting the blu-ray and I was pretty impressed. I knew the picture would be good because I have rented plenty of non action movies by digital download, but I was very impressed with the sound as well. I really didn't miss the difference between this and blu-ray. The movie itself was great as well. You have to realize there will be some cheese due to it being about thor, but if you are looking for a good action movie with good special effects, and a decent story this one is a good choice.
Thor has real emotional depth way beyond what you would expect. It also has action and special effects second to none. After a while and because of the turn in story, you don't really think about those amazing effects, and that's a good thing. Instead, you're pulled into a story about people and that's a great thing.I like this comicbook anti-hero fallen god. He's gritty, primal, vain yet noble and somehow more real. The film does a great job of showing us how an arrogant son can come to grips with who and what he truly is. The movie draws the audience in with its confidence and it never lets you go. There's no doubt that Natalie Portman was an important piece of casting because she brings the story down to earth. Thor meets Portman's Jane Foster after he is banished from the home of the gods to live among mortals. The audience can relate to what Jane is experiencing and it grounds the film perfectly. That makes the action seem more real and that's a tough balancing act. There are plenty of scenes that you have to see to believe! This movie actually has a heart and a soul and a brain and I couldn't have asked for anything more.I'd rather a movie be too cerebral then too dumb. This film succeeds on a basic level. It jumps the boundaries of its genre to pull in viewers with originality and inventiveness. Calling it a standard action film doesn't do it justice. It's surprisingly deep and takes the time to set itself up. A complete movie that really doesn't belong in the summer with the likes of the brainless films you know are going to hit soon. This is one I couldn't wait to own on DVD.
i went to see this on early release date and forked out more to see itin 3d thanks god i did. i just had to find out how far 3d went sinceFriday 13th 3 in 3d yes it was different but i got to admit my eyesstarted to hurt after a while and i could not focus on some scenes theni got head ache still from what i have seen effects have dazzled me andi just loved it in 3d it felt real. i will recommended even after aslight head ache. i have rated the film high not because of thedazzling special effects and greatest cgi on film i have to be hones ihate cgi. but i did not minded in this film because there would be noother way of making such movie. i have rated high because of acting andthe spirit of the cast just made the film special as it can be.directing of the film was very very good, action just keep coming, script was true to origin of thor and the comic to the last detail andthere can be no argument the acting was just great. i loved hopkins asodin i do not know much about the lead actors but thor and loki wasjust perfect and i mean it as a comic reader. as cinema releases goesthis one is a must see in 3d
Thor is one of Marvel comics lesser known heros. So when Marvel decided to make a movie about Thor I felt that they were getting greedy due to the success of Iron Man. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Thor is a wonderful movie. Wonderful for many reasons. First it has a sense of humor. This movie is all about fantasy and fun. Thor is the God of Thunder and Chris Hemsworth looks every bit the part. He is dashingly handsome and buff and arrogant yet Hemsworth's talent is such that you never resent him for being arrogant. He's a lovable cocky big lug. The movie starts with Thor on his home planet of Asgard. Thor wants to confront his mortal enemies the Ice Giants, his father Odin, played expertly by the legendary Anthony Hopkins wants diplomacy to prevail. Yet Thor presses the issue and this breach gets him exiled to Earth without his powers only his all powerful hammer Mjolnir which carries the power of an entire planet. Thor on Earth is both hilarious and arrogant at once. Hemsworth is talented enough to pull this off. I laughed when a nurse draws blood from Thor and Thor bellows: "How dare you attack the Son of Odin!" It is that kind of humor that makes this movie so good it's a perfect blend of humor, action and great acting. Hemsworth is a stunning revelation hopefully he will get great roles in the future to make him a huge star because he's a great looking guy with a great body and all the acting talent to back up his looks. Natalie Portman plays the love interest but this love affair is not the overwhelming forced sexfest of most action movies. Instead this love affair is sweet and romantic. It reminds me of the love affair between Lois Lane and Superman in the original Superman movie from 1977. Watching Portman's character and Thor kiss at the end of the movie actually means something. A lot more than all the gritty sex scenes in most action films. Thor is a perfect summer movie full of fun, humor a little action and a sweet romance. 5 stars all the way!!
