Thirteen

At the edge of adolescence, Tracy is a smart straight-A student--if not a little naive (it seems...she smokes and she cuts to alleviate the emotional pain she suffers from having a broken home and hating her moms boyfriend, Brady.) When she befriends Evie, the most popular and beautiful girl in school, Evie leads Tracy down a path of sex, drugs and petty crime (like stealing money from purses and from stores). As Tracy transforms herself and her identity, her world becomes a boiling, emotional cauldron fueled by new tensions between her and her mother--as well as, teachers and old friends.

This movie rocks

I think every1 who has rated this movie is being a bit harsh! thirteenis a great film and this kind of stuff does happen to kids at 13 andmost of the time even younger, my life kinda went the same way when iwas 12 my family broke down and i started experimenting with drink anddrugs, and breaking as many laws as possible. maybe you all think thisdosen't happen 'cause you live in some posh area or the suburbs orwatever. you all have no idea what its like growing up in London. toquote the football factory 'its warfare from birth' and that filmpaints a pretty picture of London. London is so much worse than peopleimagine trust me i have the scars to prove it. anyway back to myreview... i think this movie is a classic great performances all roundand I think its believable. And if you like movie this u should watchKiDuLtHoOd its a view of teenage life in the mother country

THIRTEEN- A GREAT DRAMA!!!

this was the best movie i have ever seen. it still remains my utmost favorite movie. Being a teen like tracy i can really connect to what she is feeling and why. For some reason adults either like it or they dont, i think the only ones who do like it are those who can relate to children who are lost whether it be there own or anothers child. anyone who says this movie is a load of crap must have no heart or understanding. It tells nothing but truth in a teens life (well not every teen, just the ones who get into tracy's situation). The person who made the film has great honesty and bravery for making this film and thats what makes it different from all other teen movies. It has a cliff hanger ending making you want to know what happens with them which makes it even better if you like that feeling of suspense and drama. A great movie for teen and adults alike, most likley you will get attachted to tracy and can relate, very true and to the point movie.

Truth perhaps in large cities but for montana its rather out there.

Well, I watched this with a group of fellow seniors and although the motionpicture was moving, it felt like too much change too fast. Definitely not agood date/single movie, a support and discussion group is definitely neededfor this movie. Anyway, I don't really suggest that it is a movie foreveryone but if you have a group of friends and want to laugh for the firstforty minutes and not say a word the rest of the time it is a goodmovie.By the way, the best scene in the movie is when this guy holds a chicken upto a mirror. It also isn't a good movie to watch if already feel motionsick

A (literally) shaky start leads into a fine drama

The movie starts out like amateur night at MTV - all hand-heldzooming, panning and shaky sick-making imagery set to athumping beat - interspersed with snatches of pure expositionaldialogue. The temptation to hit the stop button on the DVD playerwas high but I resisted it - just.Once the chaos died down the film turned out to be a gripping andinvolving drama with great performances all round. Based looselyon events that actually happened to co-writer and actress NikkiReed it provides a telling insight into the chaotic life of manymodern day adolescents. The real-life basis for the film is both its strength and itsweakness. Real life doesn't have neat beginnings and endings oreasily recognisable "cause and effect" and neither does this film.We end up not really knowing what caused Tracy (Evan RachelWood) to go off the rails, whether Evie (Reed) is really a "PoisonIvy" style bad apple or a mixed-up abused child or what directiontheir lives will eventually take. As a drama-documentary it workswell but as a story it leaves the viewer somewhat unsatisfied.Nonetheless, leaving aside the opening, it is a well-made movieand definitely worth viewing.

Thirteen is now a lucky number.

When I first went to see "Thirteen," I was not sure what to expect.Obviously not every single teen will act the way the characters did, and Igot nervous it would be unrealistic.I am going to be 13 in a year, and live in Smalltown, USA, and "Thirteen"still managed to touch me. It had a great moral as wall as threeOscar-nomination worthy roles.Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter deserve a little man named Oscar, and willbe robbed to have Oscar be interested in someone else.Nikki Reed also did a magnificent job, which will get the man'seye.Overall, I loved Thirteen, and give it ****, thumbs up,etc.

So scary, brought back memories

I was 13 in 1987, just as a lot of things were changing, but then therampant drinking, smoking and sexual behavior was an issue even then. Iremember being this one girl who was major in the "in" crowd at myschool (which was Catholic, so the dress code was limited to uniforms, but the stuff I mention all happened after school). These kids hadparents that worked in NYC, commuted, and the mother's had all theseclubs and activities, so they were alone in the afternoon, so they'dhang out at someone's house, drink, get high, etc. I remember wonderingwhy they seemed to be all united as "friends", but never really seemed"happy". Later I found out at least half of the girls had eatingdisorders, and the guys they invited over where "bad boys" simply tojust annoy their parents. The long term damage never seemed worth it tome.

offensivebrat 2012-05-03 16:16:28

Not in my mom's house!

Sorry, but I would like to know how many of you had mothers who wouldhave let you dress and act the way Holly Hunter does in this movie? Notmine thats for damn sure. I see a lot of people talking about how trueto life this movie is...who's life? I'm a little scared to know thatthe parents of these people and their "true to life" comments neverbeat their as* when they were bad. Now kids are running around shootingkids at school, beating up elderly for money, and having sex with anyand everyone. Had someone like MY mom wrote this script, this moviewould have been about 10 minutes long.Little girl is a good little girl, with good grades, and played withdolls. Little girl goes to school, meets other little girl. Littlegirls start acting a fool, and having sex with random people. Mom comeshome beats her as* THE END That is why I gave this movie a 5/10. Forthe fact that if moms would step in before her kid pins her against awall, this movie would have never been thought of. WAKE UP MOTHERS SHENEEDS A MOM, NOT ANOTHER FRIEND.

Why you should watch Thirteen!

When i first heard about this film i knew i had to watch it! it simplycalled out to me! having suffered a lot of the issues within the film ireally felt i could relate to it. I could easily watch this film overand over and over again. This type of film i think could be viewed byanyone. it is very well directed and produced. Thirteen helps peoplerealise exactly what is going on in the minds of many young teenagerstoday and what the possible coping strategies there are to helptroubled youngsters. There are issues of self harm which some viewersmay find disturbing or triggering so be warned. Definitely not a filmto be missed! x

Disturbing, but some parts were moving

I'll grant the good reviewers that their are some amazing actors and actresses in this movie. It is the screenplay itself I found a little, well, ummm...sick. While I'm sure the director was sincere in her effort to make an realistic movie about today's teenagers - specifically thirteen-year-old girls, I feel that she missed the mark on a few things:#1. We never see Tracy's friends (the good girls) going about life without resorting to the extremely disastrous decisions Tracy embraces. This would have been a good way to show the results of good decisions, contrasting the negative decisions made by Tracy #2. In reality, Tracy would see her downfall more clearly than the screenplay suggests. I made a LOT of bad decisions during my teen years; I and all of my friends discussed our stupid decisions amongst each other - consulting each other for advice. Tracy doesn't approach anyone about her bad decisions. This just doesn't hold up with a screenplay chasing after reality.#3. Most kids today have enough brains to realize peer pressure can drag you down, yet Tracy's character allows peer pressure to drowned her constantly. Now, the good things. Holly Hunter is such a great actress, that I love everything she does. Evan Rachel Wood complimented Holly Hunter well; the scene when Holly's character (Tracy's Mom) continues to hug her daughter after finding out how far her daughter has fallen may just be one of the most moving scenes filmed in the past few years. As a screenplay writer and author, I found this movie to be a sincere effort at making a film about today's teenager; a movie that is brilliant in parts and very shallow in other parts. I hope people who loved this movie are not too mad at me for any criticism I have for this movie; I have to say how I truly feel - the same way the director has to make the film she wants.I am very interested in looking up other movies directed by Catherine Hardwicke to see more of her work.See ya next review.www.therunninggirl.com

It's a sad, twisted world, that we let children live in. But it's a great movie.

The story is about a young seventh grader (Evan Rachel Wood) who leadsa very simple life. Until one day, she discovers another girl (NikkiReed) that a lot of the boys adore. She's insulted by this girl andneeds to change her look. When she does, it seems like she's welcomedinto the world of this girl. But, she must steal a woman's purse toprove that she's really one of the popular girls. She's now part of a world that no girl her age should be in. This is aworld of sex, drugs, and many other "bad" things. But, her mother(Holly Hunter) is trying to help her. It seems as if the girl is toodeep into this world that the mother's help doesn't seem to matter. She's trapped under the spell of the popular girl.It goes on like this, but it never lets down. It's a very interestingstory and the performances are great. Especially by Holly Hunter. Herperformance got her a lot of critical acclaim and, in my opinion, she'sthe best part of the film. If you're interested in seeing this, youwon't be disappointed. You must see it.

A very good film-tense,gritty,realistic and educational

This movie was disturbing and graphic in depicting the lives of 2 girlshitting adolescence, with very little grounding to make it through thesedifficult years. It was grossly realistic in the portrayal of 2 younggirls who become enmeshed with each other,in an effort to connect, without a minimally positive history of connection and attachment.Theissues are real, the behaviors are common and the plot flows in afragmented way, reflecting the fragmented lives of the girls and theirlack of interest in anything beyond the immediate moment. It was a gritty and tense film - well worth watching, and theperformances were very well done.

Rihanna Fenty 2012-04-15 09:43:28

Interesting educational film...

I've saw this movie like 2 times. I'me 17 now and the second time I sawit was a few days ago; the first time I saw it, I was 13 or 14. At thefirst view, this movie seemed to me like a bag of sh*t and totallyunrealistic. Later, at the second view of this movie, my perspectivechanged...Having been able to surpass a lot of stuff and to try a bunchof things that seemed tempting at this age made me see that this moviewasn't at all unrealistic. Watching this movie was like seeing my ownstory put on TV, on fast forward and with some "ingredients" andsequences missing (unfortunately major sequences). I found myself inNikki Reed's character, Evie Zamora and found my best friend in EvanRachel Wood's. It seemed sad for me to realise that doing all the stuffI did and thought was good, was so wrong but I just couldn't stop...Itws the addiction holding me there and I didn't quite realise that I wasruining my best friend's life...well actually, I didn't quite care, nordid I know. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that even though Ipaid my dues, I'm conscious of the fact that this movie is nogeneralisation. There are few kids that pass through this situation -for instance I'm known for doing what I did back then and I'm like anexception - and the most important, all the sh*t they talk about in themovie doesn't take place in one year nor does it come up at once. Theage of 13 is just a starting point but it's not the time when you doall bad things. Fot instance, even when I was 14 and 15 I didn'trealise I was doing something bad; I'm not quite the "Little MissPerfect" now either. Anyway, I see an excuse to clogging up so manythings and so much action in such a short period: the movie had todepict the essential problems of teenager (though it doesn't depictall...). As a conclusion, I think this movie is worth seeing becauseit's educational and it should be seen especially by parents.

an acquired taste...

I will most definitely give Ms. Hardwicke props for concocting such agritty drama. As afore mentioned, this is an "acquired taste" movie, much like alcohol, some people just can't stand the taste while otherslive on the effect that it gives. Most people are turned off by thesubject matter; young teens doing dangerous things, but it's much morethan a story line. This isn't you average teen flick; it's an emotionalroller coaster ride of epic proportions. I saw this movie when I wasfifteen and loved it. These are not the average teens of our suburbanschools, but the tough inner-city kids who grow up way too fast in aworld where sex and money are everything.Evan Rachel Wood gives an outstanding performance as a young andinnocent little girl gone bad. At first, we see Tracy as a sweet, ifnot neglected young girl trying to deal with her budding sexuality andhormones. On her first day of school she notices the goddesses who arethe popular girls at her school; they're trashy, foul mouthed skankswho are fawned over by all the boys. The pack is led by Evie (played byNikki Reed); a promiscuous and troubled orphan who at first ridiculesTracy for her innocence but eventually befriends her. Evie leads Tracyinto a downward spiral of drugs, sex, and petty theft.Caught in the middle is Tracy's well meaning mother, Mel whom is playedby Holly Hunter. Mel is a recovering addict trying to stay clean forher kids and be a good mom. She's trying to be a "cool mom" and giveTracy some space to grow up, but in turn gives her too much and Tracyspirals out of control. Mel struggles to be a responsible mother, butdoesn't really realize how much she should put a stop to her daughter'santics until its too late. The three female leads carry the weight of this movie on theirshoulders, but are helped by the supporting characters; Brady Corbet asTracy's older brother, Jeremy Sisto as Mel's addict boyfriend, andDeborah Kara Unger as Evie's aunt. Ms. Hardwicke brings us to our kneeswith a look into a family's battle with an uncontrollable teen and itseffects. These aren't the average kids we grow up with, but with the help ofgreat directing, a stellar script, and amazing performances we canbetter understand what it's like to grow up as a young teen in thisfast paced world. If you not ready to see a gritty, fast paced pill oftruth, than don't see this movie. Go back and rent a dumb, boringromantic comedy and leave these great Indies for those of us withburgeoning minds.

interesting but not realistic

this movie was ruined for me when i started thinking,"i was 13 less than a year ago...and i knew NO ONE like this." it was interesting and moving and all, but no one ounce of real in it. just because thirteen is an interesting number doesnt mean kids that age become these hellians. i think that if the girls were older it would have been better. **note**It is completely possible that there are 13 year olds like that but it just wasnt realistic to me**

barron-1 2012-04-09 09:10:55

amazing

What a movie...especially for parents of pre-teen/teenaged girls...Arealitycheck not soon to be forgotten. The end is unreal. A mothers love is deepeven if the parenting has been not so good...Gotta seeit!

2012-03-31 04:39:20

very true to life

This story of two thirteen year old girls whose lives spiral into bad grades, drugs, self harm, sex and alcohol problems is extremely realistic. The filming is excellent, the message hard hitting. An intricate relationship is developed between both of the lead characters and their respective guardians. This might be the story of any one of millions of adolescent girls today.I highly recommend it, but not for the faint of heart or those who wish to believe in the innocence of their daughters.

2012-03-30 22:41:07

Thirteen

This is such a good movie, scary but good. it is about a group of girls who dont make the best dissisions. This movie will keep you caught all the way to the end.

quincy-white 2012-03-25 09:42:15

Emotionally shattering

Thirteen may be the best teen film ever made. It is the anti-afterschoolspecial, not soft and soap operatic but harsh and brutal. Everythingaboutit is dead on. Even if you have not gone through anything like this, itiseasy to see how the characters do what they do. Catherine Hardwickedirectsin a kinetic style, portraying sex, drugs, and stealing as a suddendescent. The entire cast is perfect, but co-writer Nikki Reid and star EvanRachelWood shine the most, giving us a look deep into the minds of troubledteens. The last scene left me very haunted, one of the most cathartic endingsinthe history of cinema.

2012-03-25 03:25:36

The most overrated film in the last ten years.

A really bad ABC After School Special. If you need any more evidence of the "dumbing down of America", than here it is. I can't believe that so many critics liked this pile of crap.
