After a re-release of their 60s film hit Boy Crazy becomes a smash, three actresses (Piper Grayson, Kate Westburn and Addie Holden) reunite for a reunion show, with help from Kate Westburns son and their manger, Beryl Mason. The problem? The three actresses and their manager all loathe each other.

This review is from: These Old Broads (DVD) More fun than I expected. Thought it would make my wife happy but I am smiling too.
I bought this because I was watching Shirley MacLaine movies. The plot was predictable, the dialogue was uninspired, and there was too much slapstick for my taste. I thought it was a waste of old broads.
What we have here is a big mess! Debbie Reynolds is too over the topElizabeth Taylor trying to be Sue Mendes ( she doesn't pull that off) We then have Shirley who is much better than the screenplay! I about lost my lunch when there was a sex scene with Joan Collins! This was the sickest thing on film since Pink Flamingos!
This film is a great chance to see these wonderful actresses(Taylor, Reynolds,MacLane) acting again! It is a farce from the beginning to the end, and you can tell these women let go and really had fun with it! I would love to see all three of these women in another film soon, especially Ms Taylor. They have so much to offer all of us! They really Don't make "STARS" like this anymore. And I for one, find that terribly sad!
carrie must have fallen off the edge when she wrote this...maybe she was living in her FATHER'S house.....this was not funny at all.and it made her mother and her co-stars look like fools...carrie had a chance to have these stars in one movie..and she made them look like dirt throwing dames....the sad part of the whole thing is....it was life as carrie lived it..debbie must have to take some of the blame..but i could see EDDIE"S handprint on it too....carrie will never forgive the parents.....it's to bad
Lauren Bacall was not the first actress that was offered the Joan Collins'role. Shirley MacLaine personally offered the role to Doris Day, the #1Boxoffice Star of All Time. Doris turned it down flat. She smelled a ratand avoided it.I saw this picture and watch it in horror. The funny thing is that JuneAllyson was offered to play the Collin's character's mother. Just think, ifJune had accepted it, she would have been playing Doris Day's mother! Thatstruck me as toooooooooo funny.June felt that the role was too dowdy and she didn't want her fans to seeher like that. Now that I think about it, there would have been some real billing problemsif Doris had taken the role. None of the actresses ever had Day's boxofficepower (10 times on the the coveted Hearld's List of top ten box office stars- she was #1 five times - a record for a woman). The billing would havebeen like this: Doris Day, Shirley MacLaine, Debbie Reynolds and specialguest star, Elizabeth Taylor. I really wish they had had a better script, perhaps a juicy, bitchy murder mystery. Day might have accepted, especiallyif they'd have shot it in Carmel, CA (since she refuses to make another filmin Hollywood.)I felt "These Old Broads" was overacted throughout and the whole thinglooked 'gaudy.' Doris, your instincts were right on. Also, I agree withyou for not taking "Mother." After Day became a superstar, she NEVER playedsecond fiddle to ANY actor and "Mother" would have had to have beenREWRITTEN to make Day the star, not Albert Brooks.
I have always been a big fan of all the ladies but not particularly ofJoanCollins, I wasn't as familiar with her work and never knew she had such agreat sense of humor. I LOVED this movie!!!! All the under remarks werethe best knee-slapping part of the entire film! Everyone of the ladieswerefantastic, poking fun at themselves and laughing and I just could not stoplaughing! I wish I had taped it! I hope this is one tv movie that willbeavailable for sale. Neither my husband nor myself wanted this movie to beover - what a great job everyone! The writers wrote great material andthose old broads pulled it off grandly! Thank you for a great night ofcomedy!!!!! And thank you for laughing at yourselves. That wig scenethatDebbie Reynolds did, the look on her face when she realized her wig wasoff, ohmygosh, I thought I was going to bust a gut! And Joan Collins, when shesaw Debbie's wig was off....oh gosh, we had tears running down our faceswewere laughing so hard! Then the cat fight with Shirley McLaine.....I justcan't tell you how our sides are hurting today from laughing so. Thanksagain, it was GREAT!!!!!
A decent TV movie. Good interplay between the actresses. A little bitmoreslapstick humor than I would have expected. It helped that I was watching it at my mother's house so she could explainthe nuances of the interplay between the characters (e.g., that ElizabethTaylor really did steal Debbie Reynolds husband).
All I can say is I wish it could have lasted longer! Four absolutelybrilliant actresses in one absolutely hilarious movie. Reynolds isdarlingas well as hilarious as girl-next-door type Piper Grayson, MacLaine isfunnyas eccentric Kate Westburn, Joan Collins is great as sex-pot type AddieHolden and Elizabeth Taylor is remarkable as tough agent Beryl Mason.Chalkone up for Jonathan Silverman as MacLaine's son Wesley, and for PeterGravesas Reynolds' husband Bill. Although at times rather... risque (it's a bitodd to hear sweet Debbie Reynolds say words such as *screw*), it's a TVmovie that will be remembered, if only to be remembered as the film thatrekindled the friendship between Debbie Reynolds and Liz Taylor. It's anabsolute riot of a movie!
I was really looking forward to finally seeing this movie, as it stars four of my favourite ladies from Hollywood's golden years (Joan Collins, Debbie Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine and Elizabeth Taylor) and features a script especially tailored for the gals by Carrie Fisher ("Postcards from the Edge"). Just like that autobiographical comedy based on her relationship with mother Debbie Reynolds--ironically played by Shirley MacLaine--this story is set in the world of backstage Hollywood, and has quite a lot of bite in it's satirical view of celebrity ego.THESE OLD BROADS is the story of three has-been actresses who are asked to reunite when their 1960's "Where the Boys Are"-knockoff movie musical suddenly becomes popular again on the revival circuit. TV execs approach Wesley Westbourne (Jonathan Silverman), a serious producer of documentaries, to convince his born-again, New Age mother Kate (Shirley MacLaine) to commit to the project. He'll have an ever harder time swaying her former co-stars Piper Grayson (Debbie Reynolds), who has retired to operate a Vegas casino stocked with old movie costumes; and Addie Holden (Joan Collins), a virtual recluse still in close contact with a jailed Mobster boyfriend.Once the ladies are set, the fun begins! Addie's boyfriend escapes prison and suffers a fatal heart-attack in the throes of passion (an hilarious throwback to one of Ms Collins' classic "Dynasty" scenes); Piper's husband (Peter Graves) looks certain to be yet another notch on Addie's bed post, and Kate must reveal a bombshell concerning Wesley's true parentage...Elizabeth Taylor has a small but fun role as the ladies' agent Beryl Mason, a tough-talking, pot-smoking harpy. Carrie Fisher also appears in a brief cameo. One of the best scenes sees Piper and Beryl discussing their past romance with a certain man who is none-too-subtly based on Eddie Fisher. Taylor made headlines all over the world when Eddie Fisher left his wife, Debbie Reynolds and their children--one of course being Carrie Fisher--in order to marry Liz, still mourning the death of husband Mike Todd who was a close family friend. Although the two buried the hatchet long ago, congrats to Fisher for bringing together momma Debbie and "scarlet stepmother" Liz for this lovely on-screen reconciliation. This will be an essential purchase if you're a fan of the gals.
This review is from: These Old Broads (DVD) It has a stellar cast, a good screenplay but the director FAILED to get these stars to shine. I was so disappointed
This review is from: These Old Broads (DVD) the movie itself was a typical made for tv movie..not an oscar winning movie..but a treat to see these women together on the screen..priceless...well worth the price and the time to see it...it will become a regular on your list..
i love this movie to bits. for a million reasonsits funny, witty and a great way to reuinted the great classics actresses.and a lot of the story lines and jokes are true to the real actresseslives.which is great of them to joke about.but there is one thing that dissapoints mein the gay club scene Joan sings a dance version of"get happy",im so dissapointed that this was never releasedi would sell my soul for this song.im quite dissapointed that a soundtrack wasnt releasedactually.ah well. i must sit and wait for this movie to eventually be released ondvd. its only available in canada for hvs rental for some reason.if im wrong then someone please tell me
Of the four female icons in the cast of These Old Broads only one sofar at least has chosen this to be her last film. It could and shouldbe the coda for the careers of Shirley MacLaine, Debbie Reynolds, JoanCollins, and Elizabeth Taylor. The first three play aging film stars who co-starred in a musical thathas become a cult item and has just had a smash hit re-release. Whatbetter than a nice television special reuniting the three. Only problem is that they all can't stand each other. It's going totake someone of the skills of a Mideast peace negotiator to bring themall together. The catalyst might be Jonathan Silverman who isMacLaine's estranged, adopted son. Of course it turns out to be theiragent, Elizabeth Taylor who deals from a financial point of view.MacLaine, Collins, and Reynolds must have really been great sportsabout this female version of The Sunshine Boys. All the roles thatReynolds daughter Carrie Fisher wrote were such dead-on satires of eachone of them. The three look like they're having a great old timespoofing themselves, it's positively infectious for the audience.Of course the real highlight is at the beginning when Reynolds goes tosee Taylor about the reunion. Today's audience cannot possiblyappreciate all the innuendo because they weren't around in the Fiftieswhen the Elizabeth Taylor-Eddie Fisher-Debbie Reynolds triangle was thenumber one news story in the nation. President Eisenhower was havingtrouble getting as much ink as the most famous movie love triangleever. And that was only until the Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor-EddieFisher triangle topped that one. You could never have imagined over 40 years later seeing Taylor andReynolds on the screen together. Older, wiser, and sadder, theydefinitely came to a meeting of the minds about Eddie Fisher.Collins and MacLaine don't lack for good material either, all of themare just fabulous. These Old Broads is an old stargazer's dream.
A thoroughly enjoyable film...three veteran stars are brought together to recapture their stardom of yore, however they can't stand each other, so an uphill task from the word go for the remake of their old musical/play...but in the end it was a success. Joan Collins was great..as she always is, a combination of the older woman charm and timeless sex appeal...if you want an enjoyable night in this is a must!
This review is from: These Old Broads [VHS] (VHS Tape) It is interesting to read the rather divergent reviews of this TV movie here. Personally, I loved it, having been a long-time fan of all of the ladies. Not nearly enough of Liz in the film, sure, but Debbie has some great wisecracks and Joan not only looks amazing (hardly surprising she just married someone her son's age), but displays a genuine talent for comedy. If anything, I was disappointed with Shirley's storyline and the unnecessary "gay son" aspect. Also, aside from the headliners, some key supporting players are sadly lacklustre. However, it is what it is - sort of an updated "Golden Girls" set in Hollywood rather than Miami.
The four divas all looked great. Would of liked to of seen more ofElizabethTaylor. When Debbie and Elizabeth was talking to each other about the past,it was hilarious! Eddie Fisher got his just dues. Some of the storylinewasa little corny. But it was great to see all of them again.
This review is from: These Old Broads [VHS] (VHS Tape) THE MOVIE WAS VERY FUNNY.THE LANGUAGE WAS BIT RAUNCHY AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR CHILDREN.THE TAPE WAS IN GOOD CONDITION.
If you're fed up to the back teeth with pretty young things with siliconeenhanced breasts and un-enhanced talent, this is the movie for you! Theteam of Collins, Reynolds, and McClaine are a laugh riot in their roles asmature actresses with less-than mature mentalities, libidinous tendecies, and old grudges. And speaking of mature...well...let's just say that mostof the humor is a bit too hot for children. (Especially when Collins'Mobster boyfriend...Nah, I'm not givin' it away!)
This review is from: These Old Broads (DVD) The very witty and talented Carrie Fisher wrote this film, and it unites classic movie stars Shirley MacLaine, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Collins, and Fisher's mother Debbie Reynolds. For that reason alone, this movie is worth watching. The supporting talent is also great: Jonathan Silverman, Gene Barry, Pat Harrington, Pat Crawford Brown, and Nestor Carbonell.I loved this movie when it first aired on television, and for years waited for a DVD release (it was released on VHS previously, but only recently came to DVD). It is clear that the women are having a ball.I find this film to be very funny and entertaining. It's worth watching alone for all of the assembled talent. The picture and sound are excellent, but there are no bonus features (I would have loved an interview with Carrie Fisher).
