Can you turn that up to 11?

This movie recaptures the magic that seems to have been lost after theearly 90's. You all remember E.T., The Never Ending Story, The Crow,The Karate Kid and the massive list from this generation that is oversatisfyingly long. Then at some point in the mid 90's, the corporationsseemed to become run by robotic automation and it's well under a dozenfilms per decade that embody the magic of that era. This film has it all and is one for the family if your kids are vergingon teen years. One review claims no substance and I must thoroughlydisagree, it's a very well rounded, evenly spread substance with theaction and characterization so liberal it's spilling over. You keepwanting more, you keep getting more but unlike the open endings of theera we all so long for, I doubt there will ever be a sequel.Unfortunately that's just the way this business now works but, onepriceless gem is most definitely better than none. Well worth the costof owning.

The Warrior may have lost his way

"The Warrior's Way" is Sngmoo Lee's first attempt at directing and Imust say that he may need some more work if he is going to continue todirect animes, I mean comedies, no westerns, I mean samurai… Basicallywhen the movies starts out you have no idea what kind of movie Lee istrying to make, but he has come up with an original plot. I have neverseen a movie where an assassin refuses to kill a target and in returnis then tracked down to be killed by the assassin group he used to workfor (*written in a sarcastic tone*). Although, Lee did try to beoriginal by adding his own twist to this widely used plot and that isnone other than the great idea of circus cowboys!Read full review at FlicksWorthWatching.com

East meet West!

As a first film Sngmoo Lee got the full marks for an excellentAction-Adventure movie. The Director mixed excellently the Eastern Ninjaaction with the traditional Western action in-style.A lovely story butnothing much of a twist over the film.Dong Gum Jung and Kate Bosworthare both excellent in the movie. And specially Captain Barbossa!;that isGeoffrey Rush in Ron Character. The one of the best thing on the movieis the silent Love condition between the main characters. That wasawesome.Another thing the circus troupe stas as a joint family also wasa bright focus in the movie. But over the movie there is too muchviolence and I may say Bloody Violence!.The locations or scenes aremarvelous. The movie is not for the minors.Overall its just a fullpackage of entertainment all the time.so,from my opinion you must go totheatre and watch the movie. It's a guaranteed money back!.

Weird but engaging

This is the weirdest movie I've seen for some time. Think choreographedmartial arts ninja movie, crossed with spaghetti western, telling astory from the old Kung-Fu TV series, set in that semi-derelict townbuilt in the middle of a pile of sand from Jonah Hex (assuming you werethe other person who saw Jonah Hex), filmed in the style of 300. WithGeoffrey Rush playing the Lee Marvin character from Cat Ballou. KateBosworth channeling Doris Day as Calamity Jane (Ya dang varmint!"), andDanny Huston playing (another) bizarre villain. Oh, and for reasonswhich completely escaped me, there is a circus in town, which isbuilding a fairground (very slowly) in the expectation that this willbring the crowds and rejuvenate the town. Well, they get the crowdsalright - the first crowd is murderous outlaws and the second crowd ismurderous ninjas. And neither of them appears to be there to have funon the carousel. This felt very much as if it was an adaptation of a comic, but I'm notsure it was. It is beautifully photographed - very striking visually -fairly violent, often quite amusing, and always engaging. The warrior -Yang - is played emotionlessly by Dong-gun Jang, a name which may meansomething to you if you follow martial arts movies, but which meansnothing to me.And it's left open for a sequel. I'd happily go to a sequel, I quiteenjoyed this strange film.

Great To Watch On A Rainy Day With Nothing To Do!

I was all tucked out on the couch watching this on a rainy day with nothing to do. The movie was very enjoyable. It didn't require a lot of brain power and allowed me to just veg out. Perfect for those type of afternoons.

Geoffrey Rush Can Never Make a Bad Movie

What do you get when you take 'Unforgiven' and 'Ninja Assassin' and theworld's greatest actor (Geoffrey Rush) and put them together? Anawesome movie!!!A young warrior seeks to be the greatest swordsman ever, but refuses tokill the baby he is ordered to kill. He takes the baby to the AmericanWild West and hides among a group of struggling circus performers and adrunk ex-bank robber. Cowboys want revenge on the woman in the town andthe clan wants the warrior dead and the battle begins as they all endup in the town at the same time. There are a few graphic scenes, butnot as much as other Martial Arts movies like Kill Bill or NinjaAssassin. Geoffrey Rush (Ronald, the drunk ex-robber) is an awesomeactor who gave a great performance with some doses of humor! He is NOTcapable of making a lousy movie. He did an awesome job. The storyline was great and the acting of all was excellent. There wassuspense, humor, sadness, and love. The R rating is well-earned, asthis is NOT for younger audiences. Now... go see this... right now. Run... don't walk to go get this movienow.What... you're still here...???

Wade T 2012-05-20 14:22:50

Amazing!!! What a brillant story!!!! Powerful!!!!

The only way I can describe this film is "The best adaptation if someone wanted to make a Japanese animation film into real live action" The story is abstract and so visually beautiful. If you have ever seen "Vampire Hunter D" This film has a lot of that in it. The town in the film is a post apocalyptic feel to it. The idea of making them Circus characters was moving and it added more weight to the feel of people portrayed in animation futuristic looks. The story itself is moving, funny, and memorable. But lets not forget the action! Oh my God what a fantastic, awesome scene between outlaw Cowboys and Ninjas!!! You will definitely be dropping your jaw at the action scenes. Please please please make a trilogy.

I'm not disappointed in the movie, I'm disappointed in IMDb!!

I've always valued the scores at this site, and it only has let me downa couple of times...oh yea the movie...horrible! So I wasn't expecting much from this movie. I like to take movies forwhat they are, and I'll watch these types hoping to find a sleepermovie that was great in it's own way or I go looking to be entertainedand see a good sword fight, I got neither.I watched more entertaining anime, I assume the only reason they referanime is because the action is supposed to be artsy, for a movie that'ssupposed to be about the "BEST SWORDSMAN EVER" there's almost NO ACTUALSWORD FIGHTING. He swings his sword and horrible CGI blood and bodiesfly. Did someone mention "300"? The only thing 300 about this movie isa bunch of ninja's fly out of water and freeze pose in the air.Tasteless racism, want racism? watch Gran Torino (great movie).Stereotypical Asian guy with no expression and speakie Engrish but onlyhas 10 lines in the whole movie. A black midget named "8 ball" (it's aderogatory term for blacks). Kate Bosworth is hot but reminded me of aliving "Jessie" from Toy Story, rooting tooting red head cowgirl.WANT TO SEE A GOOD NINJA MOVIE?!?...watch "ninja assassin", great oldschool ninja ways meets modern guns and society.

FUN, KICK A&% TAKE NAMES NEVER MOVIE!

Throw away any preconceived notions on what an Asian or Western should be because this movie mixes it all up in a great way. Have fun watching and make up your own mind instead of depending on what all the reviews say. The ending is pretty badass too.

Visually stunning and great trip

This IS a fun movie, don't let any one tell you otherwise, it takes theviewer on a multi-paced journey. One moment the action is so franticand franetic your left thinking 'what just happened?? ... then the nextmoment your lulled into the surreal landscape, wonderful costumes andexcellent soundtrack, just a little on the soundtrack at most times themusic matched perfectly and beautifully to the screen then other timesthe music formed an almost comical juxtaposition.. great stuff!!...Then BANG your dragged back from all the serenity into a "kill Bill"stylised gore fest... its genere is best described as Hong Kong "fightby wire" martial arts meets spaghetti western meets Tarentino meets"300" All in all this makes a nicely blended, tough dude protects thegirl kills lots of other bad guys, "all for redemption" movie ..Nothing new in overall plot except the nice twists that keep u guessingand going WOW,, thats cool and different. In summary.. .your sense ofReality is best left parked at the door .. just watch the the greatfilm/CG imagery, fantastic costumes and a have fun time,,, sit back andenjoy,,

One of the oddest movies I have ever seen

Let me preface by saying I'm not really into Kung Fu movies, orWesterns or these movies with all these amazing fight scenes that seemto have a cult following. But, on a rainy Saturday I wanted to kill some time and this movie fitthe bill. It was one of the oddest films I have ever seen. It's basically a Kung Fu Western set in a world that is reminiscent ofTim Burton. This movie is solidly decent, and will keep you entertained. It'sdefinitely not the best movie I've seen all year. It's probably not thebest movie I've seen in the last two months, but it wasn't terrible. Granted, I looked at my watch a few times in the first half hour. Itgets going a little slow, but it picks up and its solidly decent.Adequate entertainment.

Started off dynamic but then seemed to epitomise corny cinema

I hadn't heard anything about this film prior to its release aside fromseeing the poster so from my point of view it was a case of going inwith a very open mind. The plot revolves around an assassin who goesinto exile after refusing a mission and as you can guess he is quietand brooding with inner conflict. He meets the residents and settlesinto the town well striking up a relationship with resident Lynneplayed by Kate Bosworth. And it may sound like I am making fun of theperformance for being wooden and clichéd while it was a little clichédit was actually portrayed well. The rest? Well we got a film that tried to be several genres in thespace of 100 minutes. Is it a romantic story, well to some degree as wedo get the obligatory romance that everyone saw coming but so littleemphasis is placed on it outside of two scenes that you wonder if thecharacters just decided they should have a romance regardless ofwhether they have a connection. Then it decides to be an all out actionfilm with non-stop killing and mayhem serious facial expressions and ofcourse slow motion. Seriously I don't think I have seen a film that hasas much slow motion action sequences. Although maybe its just the factI'm of the opinion that slow motion should be used sparingly to make animpact. The filmmakers definitely tried to include as much as possiblein this film. But to be frank the rest seemed to be fairly enjoyable. After some time his enemies close on him and we're treated to ChristianBale in Equilibrium but with swords style killing everyone who comesagainst him which in fairness worked better than Bale in Equilibrium. The fight scenes while graphic seemed to be choreographed well butnever go to the spectacular level that films like these always try toachieve. The villain is played fairly well and does come across asgenuinely intimidating. But just like in action films in general itsdifficult to empathise with a character who appears to be immortal, although if you've ever seen Commando this will seem all too familiarbut not as ridiculous. That said the performances were decent even ifit was corny in places and seemed to be pompous in the way it presentedthe plot it was more or less enjoyable. I was just glad they kept atthe run time they did because if it was longer I would have given it anegative review because if it was a longer film it may have becomeunbearable. As it was it was okay and while there were flaws there aremuch worse films out there.

Cowboys vs Ninjas great stylized blood & violence

Saw the sneak preview last night. It was funny, bloody and beautiful though sometimes not enthralling. Geoffry Rush was hilarious and the more ragged and drunk his characters are the better as far as I'm concerned and he is very drunk and ragged in this flick. He could very well be the same pirate as in PotC after deciding to leave the sea and wander the wild west. The action was gorey and yet stylish. The delayed blood spray after an intial blade attack is a staple in martial arts films and always a great technique in my view and this director delayed the spray as long as he could in some scenes creating much anticipation. It's all sort of toungue in cheek but serious enough to be exciting as well as delightful. It probably sounds odd but makeup did an incredible job coating these actors in blood as if it was sprayed on instead of just dumped on them in buckets. The effects team made a very strong effort with the CGI and green screen effects and only occasionally failed to suspend my belief to the point of distraction but only because they were attempting some very technical effects like having slow motion shot of a samuarai blade thrusting forward while splitting raindrops in half for example (the water wasn't quite real enough). They load up the movie with so many great effects that we've seen often in these types of films so that the minor and only mild flaws can be quickly forgotten because they are just as quickly replaced with more eye candy. Villains are great and they deserve to die horribly. Baby is hilarious. All I can say that is any sort of negative is that our star Ninja kills his enemies so quickly in some scenes that there is perhaps too much time left to be spent on the reltionship story line which causes the middle to drag a bit. However it's time used the flesh out the secondary characters well and once the Cowboys, Ninjas and Circus folks are fully engaged in killing each other that just allows us to care about who lives and who dies and this increases the enjoyment of the visceral slicing and dying. Spoiler Alert: Most will die! Go see it if you like the style and humor you find in movies like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. This is not the tedious slog that Jonah Hex became because they actually deliver on the action and they aren't afraid to kill women and children or even the clowns... because that's what ninjas and cowboys do best. I can say with all scincerity that this is the best Cowboys vs Ninja movie I've ever seen.

lensta71 2012-05-13 22:42:44

All this negativity for a masterpiece? (not much of a spoiler)

This isn't a ninja movie; only half of one. Kate Bosworth steals theother half of the show with her old-west-gal portrayal. For theunobservant few who somehow missed it, the barely-in-her-teens girl wasshot and forced to watch her father, brother, and mother murdered, inthat order. She spent the remainder of her life plotting revenge uponthe Colonel. To her rescue, comes the 'greatest swordsman in thehistory of the world - ever'. She also receives help from the othercity carnies, a throwback to Clockwork Orange. The city bands togetherand must fight off a gang of cowboy thugs, reminiscent of Tombstone'sClantons, led by the Colonel. The swordsman of few words teaches theobsessed cowgirl to wield a blade and builds a closeness between them. The visuals and effects: great. The blood: great. Cleavage: great. KateBosworth is awesome and has to be the most underrated actresses on thestreets. The ninja on ninja action was great, as was the cowboy onninja. The cinematography was interesting, using sunsets, thunderstorms, snow and ice, and bamboo fields as settings, amongothers. The closeups and sky views, especially during swordplay, weremagnificent. The only complaint I could possibly make was the cheaplooking old west carnival set. It sort of looked like a closed downcarnival covered in dirt. Well, it's better than a romcom, and betterphysical brutality than any of your summer blockbusters. You shouldwant to watch this movie just to see Kate Bosworth sporting a countrytwang. It's worth your two hours spent and then some.

A surprisingly good spaghetti eastern

Let's get down to brass tacks, shall we? In a nutshell it's a prettydamn good east meets west action flick. I don't know why everyone keepsthrowing around the word ninja with this film, as it's about 2 warriorclans intent on decimating the other, with one virtually winning itall. A bit slow at parts with the usual tripe about the ultimate badasslearning there's more to life than just cutting down one's enemies likeso much wheat. However, the it's worth the ultimate, and predictable, payoff in blood, guts, and gore. Not really memorable, but a good wayto kill a few hours on a Saturday night or lazy Sunday afternoon. Ifanything I was surprised to see an actor the statue of Rush in this.

ladybug2535 2012-05-12 03:03:41

Great over the top film with a great cast and surprising depth

I loved this movie so much more than I expected. Yes it is over the topin the same way Pulp Fiction, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, andMachete were: Lots of fantastic Ninja moves and sword fights; Slow-Moviolence (blood spraying, heads flying); cool CGI; lovelycinematography; and the usual mayhem you would expect with a film ofthis type. Much to my surprise though, the film had an interesting andcohesive storyline with depth; a good varied cast; solid characters;some mild unexpected slapstick; some subtle, and sometimes sweet humor;and an unexpected emotional range. It turned out to be a veryinteresting blend beyond the intriguing Ninja-cowboy dynamic. And itworks. None of these seemingly disparate elements seem intrusive orgratuitous. They fit the flow and fit the characters. This movie is much more than just a ninja-western; good against evil(and there is some real, very disturbing evil here that infects thetown--and it's people, like a rot) tale: this film explores how pathscan be altered by a single impulsive choice--in this case an act ofmercy that requires a lifetime commitment; reveals the unexpectedloneliness of redemption and the often terrible but unintendedconsequences of revenge. Although revenge is as much a theme in thismovie as it was in Machete (or Kill Bill), Warrior's Way doesn't treatrevenge as an all-encompassing or one-note motivation. Also unlike KillBill or Machete, that is not the only, or even the main theme of thefilm. The motives and lives of the characters in this movie are muchmore complicated. You will feel for them. The script allows the characters and their relationships to develop ina more realistic way than you would expect in a movie like this. Thesepeople all seem to be outcasts of one sort or another, but notstereotypical outcasts (Circus performers in the same disintegratingtown for over ten years? I confess a sneaking suspicion that the townwould turn out to be some kind of Purgatory, and perhaps it is--ormaybe I'm just over-analyzing this aspect of the film, it just has thatfeel). These are outcasts with HISTORY. The movie doesn't fill in all the details, and it's not necessary forthe storyline. Despite the sometimes rather spare dialog (or maybebecause of it), you feel the characters' pain; their loneliness. thefear; their shame; and their longing for more. They hang in. They keepbuilding for a vision even as the town's hotel falls down (Hinting thatthe place was once lively and commercially viable. All that's left nowis a disintegrating facade.) Nothing grows in the gardens. Many of thebuildings (and some of the people) are barely standing. Yet, despiteeverything, there is hope in this desperate little town. And that hopegives our fugitive Ninja a reason to stay. When I compare this movie to the others mentioned, I think this movieis far better. I liked Machete and Pulp Fiction--which has in its ownway become so iconic. They are similar in their treatment and the waythe movies--though in a deliberately exaggerated way, don't flinch fromviolence or the aftermath. As with Pulp Fiction, the main character inWarrior's Way is an assassin, but these are assassins that maintain aspark of humanity. Nonetheless, The characters in The Warrior's Way,feel more like real people, not characters in a movie. Though they arenot anymore "normal" than Pulp Fiction's characters, or any of theother films--and in many ways the characters are even more"unrealistic"; somehow WW succeeds in making them feel more real, morehuman. They have solid personalities, react realistically and make youcare about them. dammit.Warrior's Way is most similar to Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon in thetreatment of its Ninja action sequences, the aerial acrobatics, theexquisite quality of the camera work and the beautifully narrativecinematography. The photography in both films has some breath-takingmoments. Crouching Tiger had some fantastic and very memorable actionscenes, but I think Warrior's Way tops them (though there are fewer inWW). There's an excellent scene in Warrior's Way that has Ninja's landing onthen jumping from rooftops and flying down in formation like regimentedpointy-headed vampire bats. Furthering that image, one Ninja wraps hisprey in his cape as if they were his wings before he opens them and hisfoe falls down dead. That final image--that segment, will never leaveme. It is stunning. And chilling. There are so many of them, moving inperfect harmony, with perfect grace, and you never see their faces.Somehow that makes them even creepier. The action scenes in thisparticularly notable segment are cinematically beautiful, beautifullystaged, and eerily menacing at the same time. VERY cool. All of the action scenes are done well, fit the pace of the film, andthe movie is better for them. Unlike Crouching Tiger-Hidden Dragon (orso many others), none of the fight/action scenes feel like padding, oraction for action's sake. The storyline takes precedent over "action"and this is one of the things that makes the film so good. Make nomistake though, this IS an action film. There is not a lot of dialog, though as with the action scenes, what is there is necessary and(reasonably) believable. Some viewers may prefer more action and lessstory, or a faster-moving film, but I think the pacing is just right,it allows you to become more involved with the people--even the onesthat seem (at first) to be just background characters. Then again, maybe it was just that adorable baby so central to the filmthat won me over. Naw. But believe me, if you liked any of the films I compared to TheWarrior's Way, you will definitely like, possibly even love this movieas much as I do. I think this movie is destined to become an iconicclassic.

vipher20 2012-05-10 22:57:35

Meh....Pretty disappointing in light of what could have been an awesome movie.

The concepts are great. A ninja movie with the smooth cool effectsyou'd hope for, some cinematography reminiscent of 300, and the oldwest verses ninjas. How cool is that? Well....unfortunately, not ascool as you'd think. There was a clip on Xbox Live that shows the first2 minutes of the movie. The crummy thing is, after that first twominutes of setting up the stylish ninja effects and sword play...youdon't see anymore of it till about the last 20 minutes of the movie. And that's exaggerating. Quick fight scene at the start. Long actionscene at the end. And all the stuff in between is mush. I'm not sayingI don't enjoy a movie with a good plot, but c'mon...there was onlyreason why any guy went to see this movie---ninjas...and cowboys VERSESninjas. They didn't go to watch a lengthy story about a ninja fallingin love and getting soft. Me and my buddies were really stoked aboutthis movie going in, but I just really can't say it was that great. Iactually liked the cinematography and the sets, but it just didn't useit enough to it's advantage. And to be honest, I really wasn't thatimpressed by the sword play. It was like the main character was nevertouched and he only had one move--slice. There wasn't any fancyflipping around and doing crazy stunts. It was just: ninja comes athim, he slices, they die. Rinse and repeat. No special way of doing it,just the same move every time. It didn't even look like any trainingwas necessary. They just handed him the fake sword and told himwhenever a guy gets near him, swing at 'em, and we'll add the blood inlater. The only other thing I can say is that Kate Bosworth's accent wasTERRIBLE and annoying. I know it was supposed to be a little thick, butthat was just a little much. And the funny thing was, as the movieprogressed, it got less thick.Anyways, wait for this to come out on DVD at best. Believe me, this isnot nearly as cool as it could, or SHOULD, have been.

Excellent movie

This is similar to the magnificient 7 cowboy movie. A town being attacked by bandits. Excellent effect like crouching tiger hidden dragon. Fast moving and Kate Bosworth looks stunning! She does a great job as the heroine. I didn't expect much from this kung fu movie besides some great fight scenes. This movie had that and more

Rogue should refund me my time

As stated in another review, I'm convinced that the people giving itgood reviews on here, or anywhere, are people who had something to dowith this movies production. This movie has no redeemable factors to it. Bad acting, bad SFX, badstory, bad score...bad everything. How this movie got passed the pre-production phase is beyond me. Thismovie had to suck on paper as well.Fortunately, I was able to see the movie for free, but I still left themovie theater feeling ripped off. Everyone who had something to do withthis movie should be ashamed of themselves.Avoid this movie at all costs.

The Warriors Way

This review is from: The Warrior's Way (Amazon Instant Video) This movie was jammed packed with action suspense drama which makes it good watch. My husband really liked this because of what this movie made you stop and think about how precious life really is.
