A romantically challenged morning show producer is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result.
My dad was out of town and my mother and I rented this movie to watchwhile eating pizza in front of the TV. Now, my mother and I are diehard movie fans. And never have we turned off a movie. This was thefirst time. We were watching it quietly for half an hour and then atthe same time we said: What is this?! It seemed like a nice movie, ithad decent reviews, not great, but we loved 27 dresses with KatherineHeigl, and that movie was smacked down by critics. This movie was justvulgar and discriminating. I have no idea how Katherine Heigl or GerardButler can watch this movie without being completely embarrassed andashamed. The acting was awful, the script was awful. The entire storywas so made up, totally unbelievable. Please, trust me and never buy itor rent it. It is such a waste of money!
Not the light hearted comedy I expected at all. But chalk this up to our present freedom of expression mentality. I expected LOTS more from these two actors. What you get is constant profanity and extreme sexual references. I found it worthless as a film. Very disappointing after seeing Gerald in PS I love you. and Katherine having numerous cute and funny romantic comedies under her belt. I found it offensive and disappointing. They had chemistry but needed a script that had vocabulary....
Katherine Heigl, you are an excellent and beautiful actress who hasmany great movies, which include 'Bride of Chucky' and 'Knocked Up'.Gerald Butler, I don't know you very well, but you did an amazing jobin this movie.Maybe you should actually consider giving advice on howto get people with a boyfriend or girlfriend. If it worked withKatherine Heigl, it can work with anyone. If there is anything that Ican say about you 2 people in this movie, it's that you have done awonderful job as the main characters. It actually feels like I walkedout of the theater with a breath of fresh air.Although this movie isn'texcellent, it does deliver plenty of entertainment that fans of Mrs.Heigl and Mr. Butler will just love.In fact, they should do anotherromantic comedy together. It'll definitely spark some attention betweenthem.I just know it.This movie has a significant similarity to one ofthe lines in the movie. In the movie, Katherine Heigl said, "There areno problems, only solutions". 'The Ugly Truth' is a solution for anyonewho has a problem not enjoying romantic comedies. The movie may be alittle predictable, but it's still enjoyable.
Here we go again. Another one of those movies that have been done abazillion times already. Granted, it had it's funny bits but overallthe whole thing just felt so darn clichéd.So here's the basic storyline. A pretentious woman looking for true, passionate love and a guy who's a complete jerk and believes men onlycare about looks of a woman, hate each other. But wait, what's this? After a bunch of random bullcrap they end up together! Did you see thatcoming? I mean, who would've thought? Oh right, just about anyone who'sseen romantic comedies before. Yes, just kill any shred of potentialthis movie had by destroying the plot line and making it generic romcomending no.992. Most other characters excluding these 2 are basicallyprops and add nothing to the story. The basic argument of the wholemovie is 'men are afraid of love' and 'women are control freaks'. Ah,just shut the hell up with your dumb morals and just give us a decentfunny movie. Oh, that can't happen because just about everything inHollywood has to go by the dumb rulebook. Yes, never try to beoriginal, always repeat what has been done and be very predictable.Like I said before, some of the jokes are good but most of them havebeen already done so they felt pretty bland. Even in the good jokes, none really stood out. This is a very forgettable movie and isdefinitely not worth watching because of a few decent jokes. Unlessyou're a big romcom buff, avoid. That's the real ugly truth.
This movie was extremely sexy and extremely funny! Gerard Butler andKatherine Heigl were hilarious together! I loved all the sight gags,one-liners, etc. Butler is like the dirtier, and more awesome versionof Hitch. A woman named Abbie Richter works as a morning show producer, but she cannot get a date. She watches a show called 'The Ugly Truth'that is hosted by a male chauvinist named Mike Chadway who is fixing toteach her how to get a guy, how to turn men on,and how to be sexy. Heeven gets her vibrating panties! When she finally dates a guy namedColin, Mike slowly begins to fall in love with Abbie. Is the feelingmutual for her? I highly recommend THE UGLY TRUTH!!!
Katherine Heigl plays Abby Richter who is a Producer on Sacramento'smorning show. Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler) has a talk show that tellsabout men and women and their relationships. When Abby's cat getsoutside and goes into a tree and she gets stuck she gets out with thehelp of her new neighbor Colin who is a Orthopedic Surgeon. Afterseeing Chadway on his show the ugly truth when Abby is getting newideas to save her network, he shows up the next day at her office.Stuart (Nick Searcy) gives Chadway the job to improve on their ratings. When finding out Abby likes Colin she makes a deal with Abby that if hecan get Colin to like Abby, she will help him on the morning show.Butler and Heigl make a funny comic duo in this film. Butler has manytalents and has grown to be a versatile actor in his career. Heigelwhich last seeing her Grey's Anatomy, 27 dresses, and Knocked Up is asfunny as always and fun to watch. This movie has a good message andshows you that you have to be yourself and not someone else whenfinding someone you want to be in a relationship with. This movie willgive you laughs and have you satisfied at the end. check out more of myreviews at getthenew.com under brownah18, thanks.
The Ugly Truth starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is an unfunny look at the battle of the sexes. Yeah I admit, I just watched this rom-com because I think Butler is a total babe but even his perfect face can't save this trite film. There's WAY too many sex jokes and none of the them are hilarious. The ending was sappy and predictable, you can see it coming from a mile away. I don't know how Heigl became a leading lady, she can barely act and her comic timing is a mess. The Ugly Truth is one pretty ugly comedy, if you can call it that!
I have just come from a movie theater where I saw the new romanticcomedy "The Ugly Truth" starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, directed by Robert Luketic with three screen writers, two of whomworked with the director on an earlier hit, LEGALLY BLONDE.With a title that suggests the great Leo MacCarey comedy THE AWFULTRUTH, this movie has been taking an awful lot of criticism, mostlydirected at Miss Heigl, a beautiful and competent actress who has, itseemed, been called upon to carry a script which is mostlydistinguished by the fact that her character, as written, is composedof a number of seemingly immiscible characteristics, none of which areever sorted out; and which seems to attempt to move between standardscrewball, standard romantic comedy, with occasionalFarrelly-Brothers-style freak-out jokes tossed in, with no presagement, rhyme nor reason. The whole thing ends in such a predictable manner in a sky filled withballoons that the film might have been written by simply takingdiscarded parts of other scripts and tossing them in.In short, while Miss Heigl does not distinguish herself in thisindistinguishable mess, laying the blame at her feet strikes me ascruel and foolish. While she is given an 'executive producer' credit, there are a total of eleven producers on this film, which is up nearthe John Woo level. Miss Heigl carries out her acting assignmentcompetently, and she has good chemistry with Mr. Butler. While she hasappeared in other romcoms to better effect -- I did enjoy 27 DRESSES --surely her job as an actor is not to rewrite the script, nor to insiston a character that makes sense, but to perform the role in a manner asplausible as possible, to milk the funny lines for what they are worthand to be generally of interest when she is on screen. She accomplishesthe last, but surely the fact that her character makes no sense andthat the gags are thrown in at random cannot be laid at her feet.Mr. Butler is given a much more interesting role, that of a chauvinistpig whose TV producer Miss Heigl is forced to become. However, theaudience is swiftly assured that this is simply a pose to cover a warmheart and Miss Heigl comes to recognize this gradually -- and tellingthe audience quickly and Miss Heigl slowly is another problem with thescript. There is also the third wheel, played by Eric Winter, who plays anunattached doctor with a body that looks like he spends three or fourhours a day working on his abs. Although my early assumption that hewould turn out to be gay were not borne out, he serves no realimpediment to Mr. Butler's and Miss Heigl's inevitable romance. The result is that this is a poor but fitfully watchable romcom, distinguished mostly by Mr. Butler's macho maundering on What MenReally Want. If you miss it, you won't miss much, but I doubt if theactively painful scenes -- including the aftermath of a discussion ofmasturbation that the Farrelly Brothers would reject as neither funnynor realistic --will cause you to walk out of the theater.
i dont think i could love this movie more then i do. Alot of it is based on what chicks thing and what their actually willing to say.I cant even imagine if it could be better
So not only are the previews for the movie hilarious, but literally theentire movie I was sitting on the edge of my seat laughing at all ofthe raunchy comedy that Hiegl and Butler put together. The story ofHiegl's character is one that is all too familular, the beautifulsuccessful work-a-holic who is waiting for the perfect guy to comearound. But Butler's twist on what the perfect guy really is reallykicks Hiegl in the butt! The comedic relief is outstanding in thismovie. I not only found myself laughing, but every guy in the theatercracking up every time Butler spoke, as well as when Hiegl and Butlerwere in a scene together. The movie is terrific, the very last scenejust makes perfect sense for the movie. Hiegl and Butler really hitthis one out of the park!
I'm not the type of guy to go watch these movies at all. I am a man that would rather see Gerard killing Persians, rather than falling in love. However, this gave me and my girlfriend a real fun and enjoyable end of the night. Very good movie to take someone on a movie date, well at least if they don't have "pure" ears like the rest of us. The "ugly truth" is that there is so much truth behind everything said in this movie its hilarious and makes you sit there and rub your chin and say...."you know what...I think he/she's right." Even though I wouldn't say it to the guys, but I really enjoyed the ending a lot. Really brings out the truth in people, and when the girl asked me at the end of the night why I loved her I said "beats the hell outta me," she loved it.
It did have a couple moments but overall, it was the typical'opposites-attract' romantic comedy. The woman is uptight andhumorless, the man is a complete goof-ball, they fall in love... Mostof the 'jokes' were stupid innuendos which made it seem like it waswritten by middle school boys.It also kind of reminded me of What Women Want in the way that womenare portrayed as uptight and having no sexual drive what so ever. Quitepatronizing actually. If you liked What Women Want, this movie is rightup your alley. Expect a couple laughs, but don't expect any depth orsubstance; the movie doesn't uncover anything real, groundbreaking, ortruly ugly.
I was expecting another stupid unfunny comedy like My Best Friend'sGirl and Observe and Report. But surprisingly I didn't get that here, Igot enjoyable funny adult comedy. Where the two main leads play offeach other perfectly. The vulgar jokes are said not to be gross, butinstead said in a lighthearted way.Abby(Katherine Heigl) is an uptight workaholic, who can't seem to theman of her dreams who lives next door, and he is a foot doctor namedColin(Eric Winter). Abby is a producer for cable morning show. But theratings are slipping, and in hopes to get the ratings a boost, herboss(Nick Searcy) decides to bring in Mike(Gerard Butler) a host of anadult show called The Ugly Truth, about the complications between menand women. And his show gets put on there network, much to Abbysdismay. She does not like Mikes outspokenness. And much to Abbyssurprise, the ratings skyrocket. But Mike soon realizes Abbys troublegetting a man, and decides to help her. Abby surprisingly excepts hishelp.I thought Katherine Heigl was gonna be bad, but she wasn't, she wasvery funny enduring,so was Gerard Butler. They both have incrediblechemistry. The supporting cast do alright. A pretty entertaining adultcomedy. It was almost has good has The Hangover.
This film is probably the most unpleasant pile of trash I've seen for along time. Perhaps they were going for some kind of sophisticatedbattle of the sexes comedy a la Cary Grant/Katherine Hepburn but theywere way, way, way off the mark! This film seems to pride itself on theperpetuation of the stereotype that men are void of emotion and onlyseeking sex and women are controlling harpies who have a checklist ofrequirements that must be met in order for them to give a guy a secondglance. Yes, the main characters get together at the end but only afterwe are subjected to a stream of disgusting clichés, insults and sexist'jokes'. The contrived set-pieces, such as the vibrating knickersscene, are dismally unfunny and actually embarrassing to watch. I haveno idea what drew either Katherine Heigl or Gerard Butler to think thiswas a worthwhile project. The messages put forward by the film are extremely toxic e.g. that thebest way for a women to get a man is to strip herself of her ownidentity and change herself completely into a stereotype of 'what menwant'. Equally, I imagine that many men would be insulted to bedescribed in the way they are by Gerard Butler's character, whoessentially portrays them as nothing but sexist pigs. The fact thatHeigl's character dumps the man she deceived into asking her out andthat Butler's character realises at the last minute that he loves herdoesn't exonerate the filmmakers from the crime of crassly pedallingsexist rubbish throughout the majority of the film. Both sexes haveworked hard to counter these stereotypes over the last century but thisfilm seeks to resurrect them for the purposes of a few cheap laughs. I felt pretty undermined and violated by the end of this film. It waslike going back at least 50 years to the worst periods of sexism andgender politics, with excessive swearing and copious amounts ofvulgarity thrown in simply for the sake of it. I would strongly adviseagainst wasting your time watching 'The Ugly Truth', which whilecertainly ugly, gets nowhere near to representing the truth aboutmodern relationships.
This film is.....ugly. It doesn't have many, if not any, redeemingqualities. Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler play there roles fine.Nothing bad, but nothing to run home about.Abby (Katherine Heigl) plays a stuck-up producer of a news show that isfailing. She is a romantically challenged, stuck up control freak, which often scares her dates away. Then one night Abby watches a showcalled "the Ugly Truth", which consists of Mike (Butler)giving datingtips for woman, in very crass terms. Abby is appalled, calls the showand complains, and things just get worse from there. The next day, shefinds out that her boss hired Mike for a 3 minute segment for the show, thinking it will help with ratings. and from there they have to learnto deal with each other. The story is shallow, you never really fell for the characters, andmore times then not, you find them just flat out annoying. The movie isboring and unfunny. Its a shame to see such great actors/actresses in amovie this flat. The only real redeeming quality is that there is aHINT of chemistry between Heigl and Butler, and the fact that the movieis only 96 minutes long, is also a plus. (Although it was still toolong for me). Whatever you do, try to avoid seeing this movie.
Seriously, i don't know what movie studios are thinking now a days, releasing movies like these into the cinemas. I went to watch thismovie, not with high hopes (after all the whole opposites attractformula has been used millions of times in romantic comedies, so itwasn't very original) but i thought it could be fun. I mean the trailerhad it's moments, and i am a Gerard Butler fan, i thought maybe hecould have good chemistry with Katherine Heigl (she did OK in knockedup). None of it was there, no chemistry, no good acting, no script, nolaughs. The only reason i am not giving it a 0 to this movie is becausei had a few laughs in the vibrator scene (is not a spoiler because itappears in the trailer). I am a big fan of Gerard Butler, but i don'tknow what he was thinking, is like he accepted the movie without evenreading that awfully unfunny script. He did very good in 300 (somepeople say his acting was stiff, but i think it was very powerful, hisapproach to Leonidas was chilling) so i guess he should stick to thosekind of strong quiet type kind of roles. Another thing is his accent,he cannot pull it of, his American accent is jut plain awful, Gerard ifyou are reading this for any reason whatsoever, i am a big fan butstick to your native accent or at least get a better American coach.Katherine Heigl does a lousy job playing this highly annoying networkexecutive, her whole character is just annoying, and the way theyapproached the character was just unreal. As i said earlier the scriptis painfully unfunny, i mean they jut used clichè after clichè of themacho stereotype for Butler, clearly trying to emphasize how differenthe was with Heigl's character: Guess what? this time it didn't work. The characters were so cliché'd that they just became caricatures, inever cared for any of them, i didn't care if they ended up together ornot. All in all is an awful movie, and i just couldn't repress myfeelings towards this mess of a movie. Horrible performances, Horriblemovie
If you can suspend your belief long enough to accept that the lovelyKatherine Heigel would ever have a problem finding a man, then thistrip to the Fairy Land of Hollywood Make Believe is for you. This is another of those movies in which all the women are unpleasantlyuptight and work in either television or magazines. And where, in spiteof being successful and attractive, they all see themselves astremendous failures because they don't have a boyfriend. In this land, the men are all coarse and juvenile yet somehow still manage to attractbeautiful, accomplished women that in reality would be well out oftheir league. And, of course, women are expected to change all of theirless attractive traits to attract men, but men are to be accepted forwhat they are. This is a strange movie to categorise - it's clearly meant to be achick flick but judging by the "wisdom" imparted, I'm presuming it'swritten by single, geeky men who want to believe that acting likemorons impresses women. There are attempts to make Gerard Butler'scharacter sympathetic to women - he proclaims his show is the truth butwon't let his young nephew watch it - hypocrisy anyone? There's thegeneral impression that he looks after his sister - I wonder if he isincluding her in his statement that men want to see all women wrestlingin jello? Heigel's shortcomings are discussed in great detail, Butler'sare only touched upon - if the movie had been a little more even handedin its portrayal of damaged human beings, it might have been a classic. But the end of the movie when he falls for Heigel being her "real self"completely renders everything he has ever preached about as a lie. Whyhe suddenly drops his life's philosophy of being a dickhead and fallsin love remains a mystery. The only thing I learned here is that bothmen and women are way too judgemental about each other. Also - Gerard Butler - Scottish accent, Irish accent, American accent -just pick one and go with it.There is some good banter and a few lines made me laugh out loud whichis why it gets two stars and not one, but when it comes to the truthabout relationships, this is about as deep as a puddle.Oh, and before you say it, yes I'm ugly and single.
avg of 6.5 ? Lay off the crack pipe people. This movie is hilarious. Ihaven't seen a comedy this good in a long time. The screenplay, theacting, the message of the movie is all top-notch. No other movie hasmade better observations on the dance between the sexes than this one.Watch it, laugh, and learn. If you can walk away from a film havinglearned something that you didn't know before, you're not only beenentertained you've been enlightened. This movie is uninhibited,tell-it-like it is , straight to the point TRUTH. If you reviewed thismovie less than an 8 or just don't think you got it, watch it withsomeone who does and can explain it to you. Stop trashing good movieson IMDb with your poor taste.
This review is from: The Ugly Truth (Widescreen Edition) (DVD) Found The Ugly Truth to be fun and Enjoyable from beginning to end. I found it to be intellectually true to the way life is from beginning to end. It shows what the ladies want and what men want. Hooray for Ms Heigl and Mr Butler.
