Every seven years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 30 of the worlds deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the 10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1, which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag.
There are only three other reviews here so far: two give this 10(Err... two different named reviewers, identical reviews, duplicatememo to PR team please....idiots) and the other 1 so let's assume somewill love this and others will hate it. I'll try to review it....Plot: pretty easy sell, every seven years the top assassins hold thetournament; they kill each other until the last survivor wins it all;all organized, tracked, and betted on by billionaires, of course. The whole thing is kind of like no limit hold'em.... but they can't alldodge bullets, baby. Think Tekken and you're not in the right area, itis better than Uwe Boll and that ilk.Not quite lineage as Guy Ritchie (Obviously) but only needing JasonStratham this is exactly what is says on the box: an out and out killor be killed cartoonish film.Filming is good, nothing too dark or menacing but just nice. It's not Battle Royale but if action is your thing and you liked DeathRace 2000, Shoot Em'Up or Wanted then you'll be happy enough.Any gripes about morality are irrelevant here, this is in a moralvacuum, and so are plot holes, logic, or how heads explode likewatermelons, this is either your type of film or you should really itavoid totally.Yep, it's violent - limbs fly, people die in well, imaginative ways -but it is not horror. It's all well put together, nicely cast, and creates enough interest;better than just hunt or be hunted there is a real plot and evencharacter development...Oh and great to choose Middlesborough, seriously one of the ugliest, most desolate pile of concrete crap evaar...ha ha....shooting it up thekyber pass can only improve it....This is a movie to watch with mates and wince and cheer to....
The Tournament is a stupid movie. There is a basic idea- ripped off frommovies like mean guns and battle royale- but nothing is ever done withit. The idea that 30 assassins would fight to the death is stupid..whyenter a contest with such low odds of survival? although most of themare so stupid they would never last in their job anyway. The charactersare all pretty dull..its sad to see Ving Rhames and Robert Carlyleslumming it in cheap rubbish like this, and if Kelly Hu were justrequired to shoot people and pout she would be OK but she has beenlumbered with some cheesy redemption subplot which is beyond her. There is a lot of criticism of Lian Cunningham here..its not his faulthe was saddled with some woeful dialogue and clunky exposition. The only memorable character is Sebastien Foucan's..and that is onlybecause he does parkour. There are a few people on here- doubtless with some motive of theirown- who keep posting that the movie is amazing, should be in cinemasetc. It shouldn't. It's not up to scratch and is just a brainless shootem up..on the same level as Seagal's latest cheapo offerings.
I first saw the trailer and thought this would be really good, mainlybecause Kelly Hu was in it, and I like the occasional actionmovie...It's Hollywood's attempt at the great 'Battle Royale'. And thiskind of succeeds.Every seven years the greatest assassins gather in a remote little townand battle it out. The last man or woman standing wins. Simple.I was impressed at how good this film was, some of the fight sequencesare extremely well choreographed, fast and brutal with tons of blood, just in case. What was more impressive was the fact that this filmtakes place in Britain, Middlesborough of all places...I felt that the actors were all brilliant..I mean the script is justbad..the dialogue...But the actors pull through. Kelly Hu, wasbeautiful as always and here, you honestly didn't want to get hermad..Robert Carlyle was funny as the alcoholic priest, while VingRhames gave his usual, no nonsense drama.A nice action movie...
For those not in the blue, a tournament is a round-up of the bestassassins in the world who are forced to hunt each other down and killeach other if they want the money that they're willing to risk theirlives for..Every assassin has a transmitting device implanted in theirskin and every assassin is given a tracker device that allows them tohunt down and kill the other person. The real plot of the movie startswhen one assassin cuts out his transmitter and puts it into a coffeepot and it's eventually drunk by a priest who has a real alcoholproblem and claims to be lost. Now that the transmitter is inside him,the contestants are now going to think that he's part of the game andit's up to a certain female assassin to protect him for as long aspossible.Meanwhile, an assassin played by Ving Rhames is part of thegame for a very clear reason. He has reason to believe that the personwho killed his wife is part of the game and he is willing to stop atnothing to satisfy his lust for vengeance. Now there's a good plot.My friend introduced me to the movie just lastnight and I had some pretty moderate expectations.Once the movie wasover, my jaw immediately hit the floor.I've seen plenty of great actionmovies like 'Death Race', and although I can't say the action sequencesin this movie was better than those in 'Death Race', they were stillgood enough to deliver lots of bloody action-packed entertainment.Thewhole movie is basically non-stop action.Every scene from the stripclub scene to the highway scene was filled with gory and absolutelyentertaining action. If you can't handle people being blown up to pieceswith blood splattering in every direction, I would not recommend thismovie. It's a pretty violent movie, and I thought it was necessary tomake the movie over-the-top gory.In short, this is an absolutely mindblowing film with a great plot, interesting characters, great deathscenes, and lots of twists and turns.Go see 'The Tournament'.
The world's greatest assassins gather every seven years in a randomlypicked small town somewhere the world, where they battle to the deathin a 'last man standing' competition, all for the entertainment of theworld's richest people. This time The Tournament takes place in the English town ofMiddlesbrough, where among the combatants are the previous Tournamentwinner Joshua Harlow, who is seeking revenge for the brutal murder ofhis pregnant wife by one of the other competitors.Lai Lai Zhen a sexy high kicking, sharp shooting Chinese woman hopingto win enough money to quit 'the life' and disappear forever.Miles Slade an insane Texan who has entered purely as an excuse tocreate carnage and chaos, Anton Bogart, a Free Running killer who hasentered as a test of his own hunter/killer skills. In amongst the professional killers is Father Joseph Macavoy This couldhave easily been a neveldine and Taylor movie. The plot is cool butstraightforward, but the execution of the film is a delight from startto finish. If you cross movies such as Crank, The Tournament, BattleRoyale, your there. It riffs on these films, but mostly, it rips off alittle known movie called Series 7: The contenders. The cast are good, and the fact that they are so over the top makes thefilm a little more watchable, the script isn't nothing to write homeabout, but the action more than makes up for that.Set pieces are wild, and surprisingly bloody, and even though they do'homage' better known films, they are entertaining in their own right.Carlyle and Rhames carry the film from the average road, andSomerholder lets the side down slightly with his OTT villain straightout of Charlies Angels: Full Throttle.
Every seven years the best assassins in the world come together for alast man standing tournament that gives the winner a huge sum of money(supplied by the gamblers who arrange and bet on the proceedings). Thistime out however there are complications...I really liked this film. Its gritty and nasty with the sense thatanyone could be a killer. I can understand how some people wish thatthe assassins were more hip and cool bad asses, but at the same time ifthey were they wouldn't be as good at what they do because they couldnever blend in with a target. Think about it there are a couple oftimes here where things get turned on their head because people turnout to be assassins. I think it really works. Is the film perfect? no. there are some bumps in the road and logicisn't always perfect but the film moves like the wind and it has morethan its share of great confrontations.Highly recommended for action fans.
There have been a few movies made over the years about a game where killers hunt each other or are being hunted as pawns in a wealthy man's game of survival of the fittest. The Tournament exceeds the others in many areas including a well paced script and supporting music; use of creative tools and methods in the hunts; superb character portrayal from the baddest to the cowardly (no really good people in the purest sense in this movie); outstanding & realistic action graphics and keep-you-guessing subplots with a surprise ending. At first I was prepared for pointless blood, etc. but as the movie progressed the human and environmental destruction developed an almost artful beauty to it.
So there is a tournament every 7 years where the worlds best assassinsfight to their death, and the winner wins 10 mio dollar. Each assassingets an implant and a locating device so they can find each other. Thetournaments takes place in a normal city, where the mess that is madewill be blamed on terrorists and madmen to keep the tournament asecret. It is a premise with lots of potential for a fun movie. What breaksthis movie is the bad character development; you know who are going tobe be the finalists from the start, but just just hope that they willbe killed off because there are no reasons to like them.Still the movie has so great action that makes it relatively enjoyable. There are some brutal kills (e.g. people exploding with meat all over)and some fun fights (e.g. strip club). But it has all been seen muchbetter in movies as The Condemned, Battle Royal, Death Race and TheRunning Man.
It's Mortal Kombat meets Battle Royale meets The Condemned, and justabout any other film that has its premise put together a bunch ofstrangers who have to kill one another, or die. Fueled by high networth individuals who have too much time on their hands and lustingafter a blood sport spectacle, they pool their money together in a hugegamble, while paying off ten million dollars to the victor amongstassassins who enter The Tournament, a death match Royal Rumble of acompetition where it's all man (or woman) for themselves, each assigneda random weapon to take to the streets of a chosen city of battle. The Tournament tried hard to make its premise plausible, insinuatingthat all the terror attacks, disasters and massacres in the real worldare nothing but a cover up for this clandestine game to happen. To addspice to this edition's event, the Powers (that be, played by LiamCunningham) introduces a countdown death clock of 24 hours where awinner must emerge, or face death when their tracking implant explodeswith maximum damage, which of course sounds very Battle Royale.Competitors are assigned random weapons, and the streets ofMiddlesborough in the UK provides adequate CCTV camera coverage to betapped into and beamed to a board room of whales to observe whatthey're here for  high stakes in a high risk game.So we have 30 elite assassins from around the world gathering in a cityto take each other out, assisted by a GPS locater that points out foefrom innocent bystanders. However, we don't see all 30 characters, andmost of the time they are faceless assassins who provide that headcountnumber for the likes of Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu, Ian Somerhalder,Sebastien Foucan to finish off. Then there's Robert Carlyle's priestFather Joseph MacAvoy, who got unwittingly caught in the crossfire andthought to be a competitor, only for Hu's hitwoman with a heart of goldLai Lai Zhen to save his skin time and again and keep him safe fromharm. The draw of a film like this is the violence, which is unadulteratedwith enough gore to please those who like their on screen violencedished out without flinching (thanks too to a higher rating), and fullof blood with exploding body parts strewn everywhere. I have to agreethough that all the fights are incredibly well filmed andchoreographed, from close quarter kung-fu and fisticuffs, to parkour, and noisy shootouts and obligatory car chases. Having its charactershail from different parts of the world allowed for some variation whenthe gladiators do battle, and when down to using guns, you get a rangefrom sniper rifles, pistols and shotguns. It is this variety in thebattle scenes that keep things relatively fresh over the course of 90minutes.Attempts at providing character motivation, development and depthcouldn't be expected from an all out action film like this one, soattempts to have Father MacAvoy's involvement in reasoning things outoften fall flat very quickly. Plot development and twists can be seenfrom five miles out, which does its minimum to allow its fightsequences to be strung together. This has B written all over it anddoesn't try anything to disown that fact. Loopholes are abound, butheck, if you don't buy into its premise, then you shouldn't be watchingthis in the first place, right? For action fans though, you will be infor quite a treat.
i've made no secret of the fact that I worked in a small peripheral wayon this film, but I worked on lots of films over the last seven years. My colleagues and I are still of the opinion that this film will proveto be very important in British film history. Not because it is sogood, its obviously hugely flawed, but the fact that a film of thistype has been attempted at all... Until The Tournament, the Britishjust didn't do Action at all. I mean the kind of pure unadulterated'Action' that is the reason for seeing the film, shoot outs and martialarts and car chases oh my. But these guys have gone and done it and ona LOW 'INDY' BUDGET!! And if its action you're paying to see then withThe Tournament you definitely get your money's worth.. and then some.It is so action packed that it almost transcends its exploitation rootsand becomes artful. My prediction is that we will now see a raft ofBritish 'Action' movies go into development, some of which may even bebetter than The Tournament, but none of them would even have beenattempted if these guys hadn't smashed open the doors first with this.Just go and leave your brain at the door and enjoy the ride
Languishing in development and production hell for what seems to be aneternity, Scott Mann's film THE TOURNAMENT finally gets a proper DVDrelease Oct 20th. The "combat death game" genre has been inundated withseveral films throughout the years such as BATTLE ROYAL, BLOODSPORT andTHE ULTIMATE GAME. THE TOURNAMENT makes its mark by delivering aknockout punch with over the top action and enough plot twists to keepthe viewer interested. The story opens seven years ago with Ving Rhames character in a finalbloodbath in a sordid meat packing company with two other assassinsvying for the title of "World's Greatest Assassin". The scene is ultrasadistic, chaotic and bullets are flying like candy from an out ofcontrol mechanical Pez dispenser. As soon as Ving wins the battle, theenvironment rapidly shifts forward to the present day and the nexttournament begins. The present day battle, taking place in England, centers on 30contestants all vying for a 10 million dollar prize and a chance to behailed as the "World's Greatest Assassin". Each of the contestants isfitted with a two way tracking device which not only allows them to beseen by the game's ringleader, but also to be tracked by each other, ona blackberry type gadget. There are street cams, sat cams which arelogged in with real time feeds to record the action for high stakesgamblers relaxing comfortably in front of jumbo screens surveying thisgame of death. Each one of the devices contains a personal explosive as in the movieFORTRESS. The devises are heat sensitive and the tracking lights go outwhen either removed or the person expires. This is never fullyexplained, nor is it consistent. This fact is a major incongruity andcontradiction, while also rather confusing. The relative ease as towhich one of the contestants removes their device is bizarre. Probablythe 10 million dollar prize would force people to want to stay in thegame? THE TOURNAMENT is a "story on the fly" auctioneer. The audiencelearns on the go about the characters, their faults, past history, andspecial skills while the action is occurring. There are several twistsas the action unfolds and to divulge more about them would deter fromthe enjoyment of the fast paced, diversified story, which includes anunwilling participant who happens to be a priest. Revealing anythingabout him or why he is involved would deter from a plot complicationwhich occurs quite early in the film.Kelly Hu from "X-Men 2" and Martial Law plays a Chinese assassin namedLai Lai Zen with a strong set of hand to hand combat skills, combinedwith lightning fast reflexes. She has several interesting fights in thefilm. The filming style used when she is involved is like the JasonBourne series, close up in your face action. The edits are sometimes abit quick. This slightly deters from the action, but keeps the viewerengaged. The stunt martial duties are expertly performed by 3rd degreeblack belt Tea Kwon Do instructor, stunt woman Kimberly Chiang. MsChiang is currently working on KING OF FIGHTERS having more than 50films to her credit.Kelly Hu has astonishing on screen presence in THE TOURNAMENTespecially as her character is drugged to implant the chip. She has togo through a wide variety of emotions throughout the film and commandsthe screen with her intensity and fortitude. A lead part such as thismight catapult her back into the action realm.Ving Rhames plays Joshua Harlow the past winner of the contest and agrieving husband. The story unfolds revealing find out his wife wasmurdered by one of the contestants. Usually relegated to big scary guyin his films, Rhames plays the role with passion and perhaps deliversone of his most dominant performances in his career. This movie is so unbelievably violent and the pace is astonishinglyfrantic almost in the style of SHOOT 'EM UP. THE TOURNAMENT alsocontains a variety of elements to offend everyone. Not for the faint atheart, this movie includes nudity and violence in the same scene, as astrip club becomes a war zone. One of the characters, playing up hiscrazy cowboy mentality, kills people and dare I say an animal not evenin the game just for fun. If these facts are bothersome by all meansstay away, the audience has been warned. The twelve million dollar budget was used to full effect with hand tohand combat, knife fights, gunfights, and a battle on a Double Deckerbus! The action is nonstop for 90 straight minutes. Oddly there is abizarre montage in the middle with the slowest music possible, bulletsand bodies are flying. Perhaps this is some sort of an attempt of adichotomous allegory or maybe simply budget or time constraints.Even with the incongruities, distractions, rather bad box art, and plotholes this is an unyielding, forceful, and memorable action film. THETOURNAMENT features several blink and you miss it sequences and isworth repeat watching and should have had a theatrical run. Therecommendation is a strong rent even a buy, especially if you likedSHOOT 'EM UP or BATTLE ROYAL.
The Tournament is a decent action movie. But it is far from being adecent movie about assassins.I admit, the main reason I watched this movie is Kelly Hu. She is justso beautiful and cute no matter the role. Now, that this little detailis out of the way...The premise of the movie is ridiculous to begin with. First of all, inmy mind assassins are these secretive operators who work like covertops personnel, doing their job and vanishing without a trace, no oneeven knowing that they were there before it is too late. These guys arehigh paid professionals who like to stay out of the spotlight. Thismovie tries to make us believe that they are willing to risk a goodincome for a game that might get them killed while trying to win thegrand prize of 10 million dollars. Also, if the tournament is heldevery seven years, how many tournaments do you need until there areonly one or two master assassins left alive? Surely it narrows thecompetition on the job market but the movie implies that these guys areas regular as amateur hit men (which they end up being). But enoughwith the idea of the movie. The players then. We got your regular set of characters: the hero whowe are supposed to root for (played by Hu), the everyman who we aresupposed to identify with (Carlyle), the crazy person who seems to bethe main villain (Somerhalder), the wild card (Rhames) and the realmastermind (Cunningham). Kelly Hu is cute but lacks any real depth toher character, she is far too empathetic for an assassin, a mother-likefigure who cares too much about people around her to be a cold-bloodedassassin. Rhames is supposed to be the best of the best but to me helooks more like he won the previous tournament out of pure luck.Somerhalder's character is completely out of place: a white trench coatand all the antics of a sociopath which make him stand out from theother assassins like a sore thumb (if you are looking for a subtleapproach to a job, he is definitely not your man). The actions thecharacters make are far from convincing. Some are stupid and some arethere just because the plot says so. Rhames' character is just boring.I think he is stuck with the same kind of brooding mindset he had inPulp Fiction. Carlyle's character is just too unlikable to beidentified with. Basially every character is a cardboard cutout of thegenre basics. It's good fun while it lasts but lacks all the depth and believabilityto make the viewer take any of the actions seriously. The charactersare one-dimensional stereotypes who either lack any personality or aretaking the LOOK I AM ACTING business to a whole new level ofShatnerism. The technical filmmaking is OK the whole movie through. Themakers just picked the wrong premise for this kind of action movie.
This review is from: The Tournament (DVD) This is a really great movie, it is entertaining and full of action, it keeps you on the edge of your seat and if you leave for a moment you may just miss some of the good parts because it moves really fast. The Tournament is a competition and who ever can terminate the target or targets without getting killed themselves and survive till the end is sure to be awarded. There are bets being taken and camera's everywhere to see just who will win. It's a great movie and there is something in it for the women who love to see women kick butt as well. Great movie!
This movie was extremely bloody. If you're looking forward to watching gun scenes, bloody sights, bodies blowing up, limps torn apart, then this is a good movie for you. If not, then you prob should walk away. The action was very intense however i felt that the story was a little lacking. Majority of the movie were battle scenes. Interesting characters but a lack of development.
Every seven years the world's greatest assassins assemble in a small city (different one each time) for a "cage match." The winner gets $10,000 and the 29 losers all die. Ving Rhames wins the one before the opening credits. He comes out of retirement because one of the assassins in the tournament murdered his wife. Some of the action is watched on closed circuit TV by rich people who make bets. Some of the characters are introduced by the emcee of the game. Tracking devices are surgically placed inside all the contestants, who can all track each other. There isn't much in the way of developing characters. The premise is awful. However, if you like a fast paced movie with killing and exploding heads, this is the one. Now to make things interesting not every assassin plays by the same set of rules. Kelly Hu plays another favored assassin. Robert Carlyle plays a drunkard priest, who is not a player, but is a wild card in the game. There is a "mystery" as to who killed Rhames wife, which we find out rather quickly, and then there is the "why" as in "Why do we care?" Roof top jumping, some CG type of fighting, impossible stunts, explosions, and a man who just enjoys killing...even dogs. Bullets that can pierce armor, but not a bar room table (where do they get those tables?)Borders on grindhouse. F-bomb, strip club nudity (not Kelly)
A 24 hour tournament, where assassins must kill each other but if atthe end no one is victorious, their tracking devices will explode. However, a priest accidentally swallows a tracker and is forced intothe game.Writers Jonathan Frank, Nick Rowntree and Gary Young's edible conceptis wasted with two dimensional characters, the Priest (excellent RobertCarlyle) has very little to do. Director Scott Mann delivers a seriesof good action scenes and effects but they are linked together by asoulless poor script and sluggish pacing. Notable actors including Ving Rhames, Liam Cunningham and IanSomerholder try their best with the material and like the music cuesby Laura Karpman they are unfortunately wasted. A majordisappointment.Â
When I saw the trailer for this film I immediately thought TheTournemnt had potential to be one of best action films of the lastyears, unfortunately that's not the case. The premise is veryinteresting even if flawed; every seven years somewhere in theplanet(usually in a random city) a tournament between the world'sdeadliest assassins takes place. 30 assassins fight against each otherin a bloody battle royale hoping to survive. The last one standing winsthe tournament and receives a cash prize and more importantly the titleof world nº1 assassin. This is obviously a receipt for lots ofaction, fighting, blood, death and so on... But as much as I love theconcept, the movie felt short of my expectations...there are a coupleof well done fighting scenes but overall the action in the film is notnearly as spectacular as the trailer led me to believe, it's just notimpressive at all considering other action films that have been donebefore, and the few twists in the story are very easily predictable. The acting was average, while Ian Somerholder and others did a goodjob, Ving Rhames, for instance, was constantly over-acting. Thetournament could have been amazing, instead it is a forgettable moviewith a few more or less known actors that doesn't deliver what itpromised.5.5/10
Interesting plot this story. There is however more depth to the storyas you might imagine reading a brief about it. It's not all justaction, there is a bottom line. A lot of the action is of coursetypical Hollywood style unfortunately. Flying cars, slow motionpunches, the works. That is unfortunate and this lets the movie downfor me. Personally I hate that style, unrealistic, sensational buttherefore making it look unbelievable. It's not all doom and gloomthough. I though it was entertaining nevertheless although in someparts they go a bit fast through with the killers that don't reallymatter for the story so much, the expendables. They could have made ita lot better, more a thriller rather then action movie, hence my only a7. I would recommend you see it though, I watched it in one go and thatdoes not happen with many movies.
I took such a big surprise with The Tournament. Before watching it, myexpectations were neutral, but it ended up being an excellent filmwhich was inexplicably condemned to the straight-to-DVD market. The screenplay from this movie may not be deep, but it is very wellwritten and director Scott Mann's perfect work helps it to comealive. The precise way in which he builds the action sequences andRobert Hall's brilliant edition should be used in film schools as rolemodels of clear and concise narrative, where the brutal rhythm does notavoid the sharp understanding of the scenes or the flow from the story(the long list of Hollywood directors associated with the action genrewho should urgently learn that lesson includes Michael Bay and StephenSommers, who try to hide their ineptitude with confusing edition andfuzzy "close-ups").And besides of all that, The Tournament includessome delicious moments for the fans of "gore" (like me), from stabbingsand head-shots to car accidents and body explosions. As for the actors, they make a competent work: Robert Carlyle iscredible and brings a good amount of energy to his character; VingRhames shows an excellent presence; and Kelly Hu also shows convictionon her role. So, The Tournament will not unseat Die Hard and Mad Max 2:The Road Warrior from my list of favourite action movies, but I likedit very much, and it deserves a very enthusiastic recommendation.Wereally need more action films like this one.
I was excited when i saw what the premise of this movie would be so Isat back and prepared myself for anything. I must say that it kept youglued to the bitter end. I would partially agree with some of the othercommenter's about the dialogue at time lacking but I don't think anyonewho wanted to watch this movie from the get-go wanted to hear eloquentwords, I think they wanted action and By Golly they give you some fastpaced action not to mention death by any means necessary. i did enjoyit and I think if you want heart pumping action (as i did) and no holdsbarred killing...You will get your fill with the Tournament! And by thelooks of things , they may have another one on the horizon. I think itwould be great to keep this story going! There is room to grow...
