Pretty Good Movie

Come on folks this is a kids movie. Why is everyone over analyzingthis? I thought it was very entertaining and fun. I do agree thoughthat the voices could have been better though. Kids will love themovie, I know mine did. I recall many people criticizing Shrek too. Ifyou are young at heart go see this. If you tend to nit pick movies thenthis movie is not for you. Gargamel did an excellent job in this movie.I really loved the actor's interpretation. I thought some of the jokeswere good though some of them were a bit cheesy. Had it not been forthe voices I would have given this movie a bit more. Appearing in NewYork seemed predictable as most movies end up or take place in NewYork.

Brainless but full of heart - another great CGI-crossover flick

Movies like "Alvin and the Chipmunks", "Yogi Bear", "Hop" and this one here definitely devide viewers into two different factions. Either you love them or loath them and it won't be different with this one. A majority of critics seem to hate this kind of movie for it is brainless, dumbed-down entertainment for kids and geeks, nothing more, nothing less. Don't expect a cerebral piece of art in the vain of the better Pixar movies. If you're okay with slapstick jokes, colorfully smurfed language and blue cuteness for cuteness' sake than this movie is for you. If you couldn't stand "Alvin" and its squeakquel, if you hated "Hop" and "Yogi Bear" and if you expect a "faithful" adaptation of an old cartoon, avoid this one like plague. This is from the director who gave us both "Scooby Doo" life-action flicks, so no, this one's not Pixar or even "Shrek", it is NOT all-age animation art, it simply is a straight-forward kiddie flick that adults may be able to enjoy if they cultivate their inner child and aren't afraid of switching off their brains in favor of mindless escapist fun.

Smurf Suit Up!

The bad reviews this movie is getting are just wrong seriously peoplewhat where you expecting!!! Just because the smurfs are blue doesn'tmean that it is going to be a Oscar wining movie like Avatar, It's afun movie to watch and it has a magnificent use of CGI animation andseriously read the cast Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and SofiaVergara bunch of great comedians. It also stays loyal to the originalcartoon, and also the voices are very good and well done. And yes thismovie way, way, WAY better than Alvin and The Chipmunks I'm 14 yearsold and I really enjoyed it had a great time.P.S: If you have the guts see it in 3D it has some awesome 3D shots notthrough the hole movie but in main parts and when it does it standsout.

The Smurfs.....Smurfit!!

Being an animation nut and a fan of The Smurfs since the cartoon aired back in the 80s, I was really wanting to like the Smurfs film. It tells the story of a young couple expecting their first child and getting all the anxiety associated with that kind of change in life. That's when The Smurfs enter the picture. We meet Gargamel in his castle lair with his cat, Azrael, making plans to lure and capture them. He ends up following The Smurfs through a portal to New York City. The Smurfs, as I mentioned earlier, end up taking up with Grace and Patrick Winslow in their high-rise apartment. During the course of the movie, they help Patrick work through his issues about becoming a father, and reassure Grace that he's up to it. Long story short, Gargamel comes up with a master plan to get his Smurfs and that's when things get interesting. The Smurfs isn't a bad movie, by any means. It's a decent movie with alot of good humor in it, mostly provided by Hank Azaria(Gargamel). I guess I was expecting it to be a little more along the lines of movies like Casper or Scooby Doo(since the latter was made by this movie's director). Yet, the movie was a little thin as far as the screenplay was concerned. At any rate, the cast did a tremendous job with their roles. It must've did well enough at the box-office as there is a second movie planned for theaters in 2013. Although, I do recommend it to everyone. It is a good family film. I just can't bring myself to give it more than three stars. For some reason, I feel the movie doesn't live up to the spirit and overall quality of the cartoon series. I hate to be that way but I like to be honest. All I can say is rent this one first and then decide if it is worth a purchase.

great

the 3d was awesome and it jumped out of the screen once and a while thestory and the plot was good too. but the smurfs made the movie so igive the smurfs an amazing 10 stars.some people hate this movie on theother hand I love it . it is unique and gives off its own goodvibe.Gargamel makes the movie whether getting hit by a bus or flyingover central park he will never get the smurfs.Patrick and Emily alsoplay a big part in the smurfs because they also help make this moviespecial and happy.so you should definitely definitely watch this trueblue 3-d mega hit rock on awesome smurfs.also watch this with real dglasses smurf out.

The Smurfs are Great!

I would like to recommend the movie "The Smurfs". In this movie theactors share the screen with cartoon characters. The movie is in 3D. The movie occurs at the Smurf's village in the Middle Ages, when one ofthe smurfs called "Clumsy" is being chased by the evil sorcererGargamenl. Clumsy is running into a magic waterfall and arrives inpresent day New York. The Smurfs go after him in order to save him and get into the waterfalltoo. I liked it very much because of the plot, the 3D effects, and thefamous actors. I rate this movie a 9 out of 10 because I enjoyed it somuch and think that anyone who watches it will love it as well.

An evil wizard Gargamel chase the blue smurfs out of there village and head to New York City.

the smurfs was very fun and unforgettable.I had to say Katy Perry wasperfect as one of the smurfs as the voice and Saturday Night Live Dudewas perfect as brainy he had a dorky sensational personality. TheSmurfs is funny and definitely a movie to go see.the smurfs take overnew york in this movie based on the funny unforgettable nostalgiccartoon! the smurfs deserves a fair score for this family movie and ago see film. This movie is about An evil wizard chases the tiny bluesmurfs out of there village and then lead them to new york city.theevil wizard continue to chase them in new york city and meanwhile,NeilPatrick Harris finds the Smurfs in a package he gets and decides totake care of them. No Spoilers you'll have to see the rest of the movieto continue on the story.

more for kids

I can barely remember watching the Smurfs when I was a kid, so it'sbeen many years since I've seen anything about them. They are back inthis movie, but it's definitely geared for 10 year olds. In the movie,Clumsy gets sucked through a portal into present day New York City. 5other smurfs follow to get him back, plus the evil wizard, Gargamel andhis cat Azarel. There helped by a couple, Patrick and Grace, in orderto get back to their world. So, there's some cute jokes, but like Isaid, it's more for kids. Gargamle and his cat was the best part, andthey should of had him using more spells that lead to disaster. I likedhow they used computer effects to give the cat crazy faces andexpressions.FINAL VERDICT: If you are over 13, skip it.

Not awful... but not good

Thank goodness The Smurfs was not the god-awful trainwreck everyonemade it out to be, or else I would have wasted thirty minutes in lineto see another failed cartoon adaptation.I won't say it's good, but it was surprisingly not bad. Of course, TheSmurfs does not exactly have enough substance to hold a full-grownadult's attention for all of its 86 minutes, but it is a surefire hitwith the kids. The linear and simple plot follows a small group ofSmurfs that get accidentally sucked into a portal to the human worldwhile trying to escape the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria). Thelittle blue people quickly enlist the help of married couple Patrick(Neil Patrick Harris) and Grace (Jayma Mays) to protect them fromGargamel, who plans to harvest the Smurfs' essence for magical power, and to re-create a portal that only happens once in a blue moon…The movie includes some emotional subplots with Papa Smurf and Patrick, who feels he is unready to start his own family; though it all becomespretty unnecessary in the face of the Smurfs' main goal to return home.Humor, again, mainly appeals to the kids, sporting sight gag aftersight gag, but every once in a while there's a clever reference thrownin for the older folks in the audience. Hank Azaria gives about themost cartoonish performance as any villain could, resulting in anupsetting mix of interest and annoyance. On the other hand, where it isused the CGI is incredibly high-quality (i.e. the Smurfs, Gargamel'scat, etc.), and the special effects are designed more specifically for3-D viewing than in most movies as of late.I know some people have proclaimed this film to be a bastardization ofa childhood cartoon favorite, but I argue that it isn't. The film isvery aware of its origins with Peyo and respects that fact. Theyactually pay direct homage to the creator towards the end of the story. An exact imitation of the cartoon series this movie is not, but it is afun and well-intentioned take on the story. The Smurfs is mildly entertaining, at its best, but it is written withthe right spirit and is in no way an injustice against the originalseries. It offers a nostalgic throwback (with a modern twist) for theadults and an amusing show for the little ones. For the ones inbetween, I advise avoiding this movie.

Objects near, are sadder, and more devastating than they appear

Not only does Hollywood succeed in making a boat-load of money off ofthese mangy CGI/live-action films, but they continue to destroy thewarmth, the special qualities, and the simplistic feeling all of thesecartoons had. Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield, Scooby-Doo, and YogiBear have all been victims to this new tampering of family films andnow The Smurfs just got smurfed with.I judge family films by two simple things; will the kids enjoy it andwill the parents enjoy it? Very few films take this small rule intoconsideration, because it's a very hard thing to do. When parents taketheir children to films, they usually think "two hours ofday-dreaming." But it doesn't have to be that way. Some films, likeShrek and Spy Kids will charm adults as well as children. But CGI-edfeatures like this easily get bogged down by immaturity, lack ofimagination, and big name stars doing the roles of animated creatures. The story is The Smurfs get sucked into New York City and are beingchased by some creepy magician/wizard, hunchback named Gargamel(Azaria) who wants to kidnap The Smurfs so he can create gold.Meanwhile, The Smurfs get sucked into the real world and land in theclichéd city of New York. This insults the viewer seeing as every filmhas to include Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York to be relevant. So, they get sucked in and go to an advertiser's house where him andhis wife (Harris and Mays) live. It doesn't take much before the coupleto basically briefly adopt these creatures without asking anyquestions. If five inch tall blue people wandered in your house wouldyou ask a minute and a half to two minutes worth of questions beforewelcoming them into your home? Most illogical. This is the rare case where this family film will please neither theadults or the children. It may bring a brief smile to the children'sface, but their smiles will quickly diminish when they discover thefilm packs a plot amusing for only a few minutes, characters that growannoying quickly and don't act out of their names (think of a worldwhere people are called by their stereotypes. IE: nerd, geek, Jew, etcand each one acted like they are said to act). Most likely childrenaged three to five will find some enjoyment in this, but will notlikely be able to sit through this ninety-two minute plot. One character that bothered me was the main villain, Gargamel. Hisappearance is odd, his actions even odder, and his overall presence isawkward and out of place. He has a sidekick cat who he treats like apiece of meat, and that's one thing I can't and will never be able tocondone or go unsaid; I hate animal abuse with a passion. I'm wellaware the cat is a CGI creation, but the thought of someone doing thisto a cat is inexcusable. This cat is beat to hell throughout this film.It is not funny. It is not clever. It is unnecessary.Director Raja Gosnell doesn't necessarily have the best filmography outthere. He has worked on Home Alone 3, Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Yours,Mine, & Ours, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Let those films set the barfor this one. There are perks. Neil Patrick Harris does the best he can do under thegiven circumstances. He seems to resent the idea of playing secondhandman to a bunch of non-existing blue people, but does it with a cheery, yet likable persona. Though he can be good, there are parts, like thebig climatic point where he begins to hate The Smurfs, that isn'tbelievable. His anger isn't acted out properly, and the whole sceneruins any sympathy or believability for the characters.Every film can be good, it just needs to be in the right hands, in theright directions, and done with the right cast. The Smurfs could'vebeen good if it wasn't CGI mixed with live-action. It is such an out ofplace, awkwardly made mix that I believe the only two films that did itand did it well were The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and Who FramedRoger Rabbit? If you're going to make a movie about The Smurfs make itone of two ways (1) entirely CGI or (2) classically animated(recommended by me and the audience of America). If you think it can't be done, a new-age animated film done in itsclassic style of animation, watch Winnie the Pooh and tell me I'mwrong.Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and HankAzaria. Voiced by: Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Anton Yelchin, FrankWelker, Fred Armisen, Alan Cumming, and George Lopez. Directed by: RajaGosnell.

Terrible Smurf film

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) This was so highly anticipated by my family for the holidays and the film was simply a flop. No engaging story board and the only good thing I can say regarding this production is the animation.

La La La La La, this film is a piece of junk.

The Smurfs 1/2 StarOf all the bad movies based on cartoon series and comic strips, thishas got to be the worst I've ever seen, the story is simple, the smurfstry to get away from gargamel when all of sudden they get time traveledto what you believe New York City of all places then they meet a manplayed by an embarrassed Neil Patrick Harris who has so good in Clara'sheart and TV shows like doogie houser m.d. and how I Met you mother andsome other woman to protect the smurfs or else gargamel will turn theminto gold for what reason. Now the smurfs I Remember from the cartoonwas funny, amazing and had a good heart, this one is just absolutelynasty, truly dreadful and truly, absolutely unnecessary. The Acting is in this one is either horrible, waste of talent, (whatthe hell is katy perry doing in this piece of junk, truly terrible),the screenplay is simply a big mess, the CGI effects are horrible, the3D is trash, the musical score is full of crap and everything else istruly stupid and here are some things that I Truly hated about thismovieThat one smurf would shake his ass, one smurf would fall into thetoilet after he blew his bubble, that the smurfs would also look at aSony electronic billboard and guess who release this movie,You guess itColumbia pictures, the makers of this film and the same ones who didtwo dreadfully bad films like Leonard Part 6 and Ishtar almost 25 yearsago. the makers of this piece of truly dreadful trash oaught to beashamed of themselves, shame on them and shame on this movie.and who is owned by Columbia Pictures, you guess it Sony. Kids mightlike this, because they haven't seen the original cartoons.Peyo, Don Messick, Hanna-Barbera and others are rolling in their gravesas we speak. This is the worst movie of the year and one of the worst movies I'veever seen.A Pure absolute dead zone. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Decent adaptation

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) Its really difficult to bring a cartoon to live action. This did a fairly decent job of it. The animation of the Smurfs and Making the villian a live character blended well and the bridging of the two world was creative way of crossing the threshold to tell the story. All in all a very good movie.

2012-05-14 22:00:09

Excellent movie.

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) I grew up with the Smurfs, and personally wasn't to keen on watching the movie, much less buying it. However, my kids loved it, and I broke down and bought it as part of their Christmas gifts. I'm glad to say the movie was better than I thought it would be for a live-action based on cartoon. I enjoyed very much.

GREAT MOVIE

This review is from: The Smurfs (Two-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The movie was great and the quality excellent. The price was comparable to the big W but it was easier buying from Amazon then leaving the house.
