The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame. Robert Fish Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephews high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne hes always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.
I was lucky enough to see The Rocker at a free screening and laughedall the way through the movie. Very funny. I enjoyed the movie so much,I saw it again at another screening, and it was just as funny thesecond time. Rainn Wilson turns in a very good performance as Robert"Fish" Fishman in his movie debut, however the part could have just aseasily been played by Jack Black. Wilson plays a rock drummer who iskicked out of his band just before they make it big. Fast forward 20years and he has a chance to live the rock-n-roll dream again with anew band. If you liked "Almost Famous" or "School of Rock," then youwill like this movie more. While rated PG13, the movie contains noF-bombs or sex scenes and is a movie parents can feel safe lettingtheir teen and pre-teen children go see. Parents will want to see thismovie as well.
The Rocker speaks to all those who want to live out their rock `n' roll dream of making it big, and playing in front of a huge crowd. At times you get a sense where the film is heading, and can predict some parts, especially towards the end, but it is a very engaging and light-hearted comedy about fame, loyalty, and, of course, rock. What was refreshing was that there wasn't an overabundance of profanity or crudeness in a film that could have easily gone that route; instead, the film's comedy relies more on great lines from its main character "Fish" and parody-like situations with the band. Comparisons between The Rocker and School of Rock seem to abound in the reviews, and Rainn Wilson seems to bring the same energy to this role as Jack Black did in School of Rock, but I thought this was the better of the two films. The film's premise: After Vesuvius' show before a Cleveland crowd in 1986, the band decides to drop drummer Robert Fishman ("Fish") in hopes of their shot at big-time fame. Twenty years later, Fish is spurned by Vesuvius' popularity and fame as one of the greatest bands ever, and bitterly contemplates what could have been as he works in his cubicle while coworkers listen to Vesuvius. After being fired, Fish's nephew offers him a chance to play with them in a school prom, and Fish begins to realize that this might be his new-found chance at realizing his long lost dreams. His new band, A.D.D., begins to make waves in the music scene after sudden YouTube fame, and with their scumbag hipster agent (played by Saturday Night Live's Jason Sudeikis) they make their way up to the top and the eventual chance to play in front of a Cleveland crowd. However, there is a catch to this opportunity for Fish. He has a big dilemma: does he choose his pride, or loyalty? Overall, this is quite an enjoyable and funny film. There are some laugh out loud scenes, and the casting for the various roles is fantastic. It is funny enough to be engaging, yet not too over the top to make one disgusted. Among other stars in the film are Christina Appelgate as one of the band member's moms and Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen as one of the members of Vesuvius. Rainn Wilson really brings an exceptional amount of humor to his role. Another great aspect of this comedy is that you seem to care, and root, for the main character along the way. Great film!
Lost that big one in the 80's...Drummers are to rock as spinach is to Pop Eye.So then there was Internet video of the band and the naked drummer and yahoo, they are Googled. In the studio laying down tracks and shooting riffsoff the new songs, they are rocking. Will they get there? Or fall over their drums and twist their anklein anger? It's a volcano that that is about to erupt.
The Rocker is one of those come from behind movies during the summertime. I never knew that it was coming out until I saw an ad for it onthe front page of Youtube's website. I then started to see more andmore trailers of it once I went to see several movies. From what I saw,it looked like a decent enough movie to check out. This was reallyRainn Wilson's first big gig in a movie, mostly you see him playingDwight on the sitcom 'The Office'. Basically it was better than Iexpected, it kept the audience busy and there was a nice amount oflaughter from the audience. This wasn't the best movie of the summer, but it was an enjoyable one.
I'm beginning to wonder if I even saw the same movie as most of thereviewers on IMDb. Words cannot even begin to describe the truly awfulnature of this misbegotten freak-show.To begin, "The Rocker" is hands-down not funny, unless you're 10 yearsold or stoned. Don't get me wrong - I understand it's supposed to bestupid. But there's the "Gradma's Boy" and "School of Rock" brand ofstupid (which are both funny), and there is this monstrosity. Theentire movie's comedic content consists of a litany of awkwardlydelivered jokes that fall flat on their faces and some half-heartedslapstick. I think Rainn Wilson is a pretty funny guy, but his deliveryresembles the performance of a high school drama student attempting tomimic Jack Black. He has the gestures, intonation, and facialexpressions pretty close, but then you realize that somebody alreadyacts like this - Jack Black. Same thing for the rest of the cast, withthe occasional exception of Jason Sudeikis - all reading embarrassinglybad jokes that were obviously written by a teen-movie comedy writer.Everything that was attempted in this movie has been done moreskillfully in "Rock Star" and "School of Rock." Next, I thought I wouldbe treated to an 80's hair metal feast. Not so. To tell you the truth,I can't really remember if any real songs were in this soundtrackbesides Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock" and Foreigner's "Feels Like theFirst Time." No. That is not enough. That is not acceptable in a movietitled "The Rocker", about a washed-up, bitter, ex-80's hair metaldrummer. There are some pseudo-80's hair songs played by the antagonistband of the story, Vesuvius, but they, like the jokes, seem like cheapimitations of more talented artists. This might be expected from an80's band that never quite made it to the big time, but the writers ofthis movie would have you believe that everybody on the face of theplanet is stupid for Vesuvius. Not very convincing when the best songscome out sounding like third-rate Ratt. Does anybody really thinkeverybody and their moms would be listening to this? Please. And I lovehair-metal. Even so, the fans of Vesuvius can simultaneously stomachthe poppy, sugar-coated tunes of A.D.D., the high school band that Fishjoins. Which brings up another point.A.D.D's music sounds like the result of a foursome between The JonasBrothers and Avril Lavigne. Absolute dreck. Somehow, you're supposed tobelieve that this band would open for a multi-platinum glam-bandsensation. But, apparently, the fans don't seem to care, because thesame ones that are bobbing their heads to the catchy emo-esquire licksof A.D.D are still there throwing up the horns when Vesuvius comes outto "rock." And don't forget to throw in gratuitous shots of fans, parents, and manager smiling along to the juicy beat of A.D.D., as ifthey're thinking to themselves, "Man, these kids are GOOD! Go for it!"How does A.D.D. shoot to the top in a matter of months to become thesecond most popular band in the world (soon to be first)? Easy - abootleg video of one of their practices uploaded to YouTube catches theattention of a major label's manager/producer, who shows up at theirdoor to sign a record deal. Take note fledgling bands - it's that easy.A parent meeting is called shortly after, and after a feeble"discussion" about something, all the parents decide that it's a greatopportunity to let the kids go on tour by themselves. Literally, thediscussion lasts like 5 minutes, with each parent successively cavingin after each other. Tripe. Finally, at the end of the movie, there's the obligatory scene of themanager getting fired, complete with the jaw-clenchingly predictable"you're fired" line delivered by Fish. The problem is, the managerisn't even really unlikable. He didn't really do anything wrong exceptsuggest replacing Fish, a suggestion he quickly retracts afterprotestations from the rest of the band mates. Aside from that, he'sthe guy that walked up to their door and hand-delivered the contract tothem that makes them famous and encourages them to get to work. But, Iguess the movie needed a bad guy, and he happened to be available. Toobad, because he's the only one who's remotely funny in this beast of amovie. If you're looking for a 40ish rock band dreamer movie that feels andsounds like it was written by Disney's best, this is the one for you.Or, I suppose if you thought "School of Rock" and "Rock Star" were tooedgy and mature, then you could probably rent this for a family nightforced-laugh. Everybody else, stay away from this disappointing heap ofdog turds. It's for your own good.
I can't believe that people are slamming the flick. It's very funny, and really not at all like "School of Rock". It's a very different kind of story. Sure, it involves a man-boy obsessed with teenage music as the title character, but the "School of Rock" similarities end there. This a modern version of the Pete Best story and it hits all the marks for having good music, great performances, and lively pacing. Highly recommended!
The first fifteen minutes of this movie is great, it's filled withbeautiful, melancholic scenes. A washed-up musician trying to go forone last moment of fame, that's a story you can get into, and RainnWilson plays his role in a fairly convincing way. Sadly, what followsis rather lame and different from what I expected. There's very littleactual humor in this movie, the characters are totally one-dimensional(meet alternative teenage girl #9542) and the whole thing is constantlyswimming dangerously close to the dreaded Disney Channel territory.Just check out the music itself, it almost sounds like the JonasBrothers' lost tapes. Tough to imagine an aspiring metal artist wouldwant to be in a 1000-mile radius of this band, but that's just one ofthe many weird things we just have to suck up. And of course there arealso subplots about love interests, there's just no possible way toavoid that in this kind of movie. They slow the movie down more thananything, which makes it rather boring to boot. This movie is verysimilar to "School of Rock", but somehow it's also lots worse.
I happened to like it a lot! Sure, it has little cheesy and expect-ableending, and sure the songs A.D.D. played was not that good anddefinitely not for every generations. But as a choice of one of the"Friday night movies", this film is perfect!!Rainn Wilson did a great job in this, his weird and annoying butlikable style of acting definitely fit his character. And that's why Idisagree with all the nonsense accusations that the Fish, maincharacter in this film, was supposed to be done by Jack Black. WTF withthose people? Every movies about rock'n roll is supposed to be done byJack Black!? Is that what they saying? Then they are clearly out oftheir minds because Rain Wilson was hilarious in this, and I think Iliked the movie because of him. So if you are searching for one of the legendary movies, I won'trecommend this one, but if you are searching for 102 min of simpleenjoyment, this be it!!
I saw this movie in a plane (with very poor choice of movies) and itwas better than I thought it would be.I mean, it IS a stupid movie, with predictable plot, average acting andeasy jokes. BUT it made me laugh more than once. It was veryentertaining and the typical slow "awwww" moments typical in this typeof movies weren't too bad to deal with.Overall I enjoyed the experience, and even though it is far from beinga good movie, it is a very fun movie to watch with your family and kids(if you have any). I gotta say it made me wanna be a rocker at morethan one point, and I think it's a good movie for kids/teens to watch,it might get them into playing some music!
I went to a pre-screening in DC and left feeling happy that it wasfree. If you love Dwight and the Office, then this movie is not foryou. I was unaware of the plot going in to the film, but went only tosee Rainn Wilson, in what I thought was an adult comedy. That couldn'thave been further from the truth. This is a teeney bopper film thatwill go over well with the 12-18 age group, but offers little for theseasoned movie goer.Without divulging the plot and describing each scene, I will just saythat The Rocker starts out really strong with a hilarious slap-stickbeginning and then fades into a long and drawn out teen dramedy withtoo few laughs to hold it all together.I think Rainn Wilson still has potential. I just hope he gets and adultmovie role.
Initially I didn't have high hopes for The Rocker and even in the beginning with some incredibly cheesy lines and a few rips from Rock Star I was wondering if it could recover but recover it did. Initially setting the stage for what would be the Fish's combeack (Rainn Wilson) and getting off to a bit of a slow start the movie quickly got back on track with a great storyline when Fish joins his nephews high school band who were in need of a drummer replacement. With a great cast from Christina Applegate to Curb Your Enthusiasm's Jeff Garlin and even Arrested Developments Will Arnett the story comes together to culminate in the type of "feel good" ending you really look for and enjoy in a movie. Not overly done either, just a show that takes many pieces and puts them in the right places to make the 102 minutes easily worth your time. Equally enjoyable was the great music sprinkled throughout the movie from Curtis (Teddy Gieger) who may be well be on his way to musical stardom as we speak, and even some of the 80's Big Hair music was a welcome addition to this old rocker. Overall, Two thumbs up!
This summer we have seen everything in the realm of comedy fromforty-year-old children and weed fueled action heroes to bumbling superspies and blackfaced primadonnas. It has truly been the summer of highconcept, but the audiences are just about ripe for something solid, something familiar and something just under the radar. Who knew itwould come in the form of Dwight from The Office? The Rocker followsthe dream which never quite came true for our main character, Fish. Hewas the drummer in a band, but in order to rocket their career tounheard of levels, they had to drop him. Drop they did, and Fishdwindles into obscurity and ambivalence towards life itself. Twentyyears later the universe smiles on him once more and he gets the chanceto play drums in his nephew's band. Through a series of pop culturetwists and turns the band ends up becoming an overnight sensation andFish runs wild through the fields of his waking dreams, while learningthe lessons of what it really takes to be the member of a band, not aone man show. Of course, he is not the only one learning lessons, buthe's the main dude on the poster, you know how it goes.Getting myself comfy in the cushioned theater chair, I was fullyexpecting a slapstick style, overgrown childhood movie with RainnWilson taking charge of the blundering and buffoonery, but whatflickered on the screen in front of me was much more than prop jokesand prat falls. The Rocker sneaks by the chuckles and laughter andweasels into your heart with a subtly touching story and some reallysoft moments. Rainn does get hit by numerous objects and suffers morethan his share of bodily harm, but he also never wavers from believinghis dream is right and true, not some childhood fantasy. The moresubtle comedic moments are left to Josh Gad, who plays his sociallyawkward nephew/keyboard player. Josh delivers more than a few times andhis style felt oddly akin to Dan Fogler ala Balls of Fury, a kind ofstraight line delivery for a ludicrous line on the page. Rounding outthe bandmates are Emma Stone and Teddy Geiger. Emma personifies the"i-hate-everyone-but-the-people-in-this-band" chick, while Teddy has noproblem with his sensitive, soulful lead singer persona. For those whodon't already know, this is a touch into the area of typecasting sinceTeddy Geiger already has a wildly popular album called UnderageThinking and he lent his pop music talents to almost all the originalmusic in the movie. Since they were able to write songs from thecharacters perspective and not just layer in current pop tracks, TheRocker tips gently into the genre of musical, because the songsactually investigate the emotional state of the characters and move thestory along. Also, while Teddy is selling movie tickets andsoundtracks, Emma Stone is doing what few actors, especially at theyoung age of twenty, get to do; open two movies in the same week! TheRocker beat it to the punch, but The House Bunny opens this comingFriday and Emma co-stars in that alongside and Anna Faris and RumorWillis. It's a one-two punch for the young ingénue who last charmedpeople as the girl of Seth's dreams in Superbad.Lending a hand to the laugh level were a number of cameos and sidecharacters. Jason Sudeikis from SNL drops by to play the slimiest ofrecord label agents in recent movie history. There are moments you wantto punch him, but then you wonder what might get on your hands and ifit would wash off later. Christina Applegate plays Teddy Geiger's momand tries to balance out the adult-to-child ratio in the mix. She doesa decent job and has some truly biting lines (rebutting being called aMILF by replying with calling the man a PILS, you'll have to see it toget the definition, but I think my best friend will be using it for therest of her life). Demetri Martin also shows up as the epitome ofpretentious, film school drop out, ultra hipster music video directorsand it gave me a medium level of anxiety just imagining being on a setwith a character like that. This was honestly the last movie I had any inkling would stir anyfeelings beyond a bubbling chuckle in my belly, but there is asweetness to the story and an honesty to the message. It all boils downto follow your dreams, no matter the cost. If that message is spokenfaithfully, no matter what story you wrap it in, there will be somepeople in that audience walking out a little lighter in their step, just itching to get home and pull out their old hobbies, guitars, etc.Don't get me wrong, this is no Rocky, I doubt many people will suddenlybecome rock stars after seeing this, but they might just get a tiny bitof inspiration from the best place possible; somewhere unexpected.Recommendation: I was completely surprised by it, but I'm a sucker fora sweet story. Some good comedic moments, but they are outweighed andoutnumbered by the more heartfelt ones. If you're looking fordown-and-out comedy, this might no be crude enough for you. Yet, if youwant something simple, with a nice rhythm, this could be the right beatfor your Saturday afternoon.p.s. Christina Applegate also holds one of the best honors ever, beingmentioned in the P.M. Dawn song, Set Adrift on Memory Bliss. Let's behonest, where can you possibly go from there?
The Rocker, a light hearted comedy about a teenage rock band that triesto make it to the top, is really the wrong vehicle for Rainn Wilson. His character is too slapstick and the overacting is something thatonly Jack Black could pull off without making us wince. Wilson's strongpoints are with the delivery of dialogue and subtle facial expressions, not making faces and screaming, let's leave that to Jack Black. After getting kicked out of a rock band that is about to make it bigwith a new record contract, Robert 'Fish' Fishman (Rainn Wilson) givesup on rock 'n' roll, gets married, and gets a day job. 20 years afterhis departure from the band, their fame finally drives him over theedge and he loses his job and his wife. Forced to move in with hissister and her family, Fish learns that his teenage nephew is in aband. As it turns out, they need a drummer and Fish is right there tojump in place. With Fish's determination, the other kids dreams, and ahappy accident that ends up on the Internet, they manage to get arecord deal and go on tour. But all is not well as eventually Fish willhave to face his greatest fear, his old band. The Rocker is not a bad film, it just has a lot of problems. The firstproblem, as I mentioned before, is the fact that Rainn Wilson is notright for the character of Fish. That is not to say that Wilson is nota good actor, but he is just not the right actor for this role. Anotherproblem with the film is that it has too many climaxes. When the bandgets a record deal it seems to be a big deal, but then just a fewscenes later, the band is going on tour, and now that is the bigclimax. It may have been better if the story was about their struggleto make it to the top by going on tour in a crappy van with Fish, andthen getting a record deal at the end, instead of getting a record dealfirst then going on tour. It seemed to interrupt the flow of the movie. The music in the film is mostly emo, and since I am not a fan of emo, Ifound this to be a distraction. Fans of the genre may enjoy this aspectof the film, but I was anxious to get past those scenes. It also seemedodd that Fish, coming from a hard rock background, did not try tochange the sound of the band more than he did. I imagine that thechoice to go with an emo band was based on the idea that the film istargeted at teenagers, hence the PG-13 rating.Perhaps one day Rainn Wilson will find a film that fits his naturalabilities. In the meantime, if you want to see Rainn Wilson in a greatperformance, watch The Office on NBC.
This is a great movie. Fans of the Office will love Rainn. He does a great job as a middle aged guy who isn't quite ready to work a real job and still has some unfinished business when it comes to playing music -- something I'm sure a lot of people will be able to relate to. I think it does a good job of showing the excitment of putting a band together, when you think anything is possible, even though the fantasy is almost always better than the reality. Funny cameo by Pete Best.Music is actually pretty good. If the metal songs had been released 20 years ago, they would have been hits. Fun to look back on that stuff now that we don't take it so seriously.
I didn't expect this movie to be all that great, but I did expect to beentertained a little with some comedy and good music. Sadly, I gotneither. The comedy was bad, and the music was even worse. Definitely asoundtrack I won't be purchasing. I was expecting some decent musicaltalent in this film, and there was none. Rainn Wilson's performance wasbad, too,and I'm disappointed that Christina Applegate chose to appearin this film. Obviously it was charity work on her part. I can't reallythink of one positive thing to say about the film. Maybe I was just ina foul mood when I saw it? Not likely. Bad comedy + really bad music =bad movie. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give the storyline a 4, the acting a3, the comedy a 2, and the music a 1.
The trailers or the marketing materials don't do this film any justice.I got to see it couple of weeks ago at a pre-screening and had alreadymade up my mind that I was provably gonna hate it (because i had seenthe trailers, and the posters didn't exactly draw my attention). Buthey, free movie, and some free time, who's gonna say no to that? I wasdelightfully surprised to see an "original film" on theaters again.Something that was not a sequel, or a remake, or some cookie cutterflick. And I'm not a big music fan, but its got a good beat and i candance to it LOL The film has a great story and you fall in love withthe characters right away. I would have loved to have seen Jack Blackplaying the lead role but Rainn Wilson was perfect. There's sort of anunpolished subplot with the girls father, but i guess I'll let you bethe judge of that.Christina Applegate is HOT. She's come a long way from married withchildren and plays her character brilliantly.I liked the girl band member, she actually did a great job with hercharacter, though something about her just reminds me of Lindsay Lohan, not sure if she looks like her or she just plays the character the wayLohan would have played it, though could have been more unique.Character-wise she just doesn't look dark enough for what I think thewriters were going for.If you get a chance take a date and check it out. You'll have plenty ofgood material to talk about over dinner.
In what is mostly a one man show Âor, band- The Rocker, which followsin the footsteps of many other films remarkably similar to its own, isvery much like the band it fronts; sparkly, catchy but totallytransparent and generic. As far as rock-band movies go, there isn'tmuch new or original material here, and anyone who calls themselves anexpert on the genre will find little to enjoy outside of the leadcharacter and the shenanigans he gets into. It's this distinct lack ofmomentum or having anything exciting to say that makes The Rocker feelold and tired, lacking any real edge or character that one wouldnormally associate with the rock and roll lifestyle. No, much like leadcharacter Fish states midway through the feature, this movie comes offmore like a spectator experience; lightly amusing at times andsporadically interesting, but lacking any real solid ensemble ofcharacter and following too many rules regarding structure and pacing,The Rocker feels more like an opening band that you have to sit throughin order to get to who you really came to see; unfortunately however, that band isn't playing tonight.Instead we have A.D.D. fronted by angst-ridden teenage pretty-boyCurtis (Teddy Geiger), a band who play pop-rock el stadio music, thatone would think lead character Robert "Fish" Fisherman (Rainn Wilson)would actively rebel against as much as drum machines. A veteran of thegame from twenty years back, Fisherman is reluctant to help out hisnephew's band with a little bit of drumming after having been betrayedby his band back in the eighties. Following a little persuasion howeverit's not long before A.D.D. are out on the road as Fish attempts tolive out his dream of being a rock star whilst the rest of his bandmates play video games and sulk in their rooms.Herein lies where The Rocker loses most of its steam; although Fish ismostly a stereotypical cartoon character, he nevertheless entertains uswhilst too often clashing awkwardly with his downright boorish andmundane band mates. Rainn Wilson plays the character as off-wall aspossible, often nailing the comedic elements of his personality downwell enough to crack a few smiles, and yet the rest of the ensemblefail to engage anywhere near this level. Sure enough it's a decentstatement on the difference in times that these characters come from, and indeed that rock and roll has changed, but on a pure entertainmentlevel, this is still a one-man-band affair that plays a catchy enoughbeat but at the same time lacks the required harmony to truly connect.Through this distinct difference in character however, The Rocker doesestablish a fine line of parody regarding classic rockers and rock androll movies in general; it pokes fun at, and at the same timecelebrates the age when rock ruled the world. The majority of this funof course comes from lead man Wilson who does a great job ofimpersonating those that have come before him in the genre, whilstkeeping a little flavour of his own. People who found Jack Black'sperformance in the typically similar School of Rock will definitelyfind something to be amused with here; it's almost the same charactertransposed a little in regards to exposition. Again, it's a well-enoughroute to take, but at the expense of ripping off an already establishedroad to success The Rocker rarely does much out of the genre's comfortzone, and with a 12A rating, is given very little room to move inregards to how much rock and roll chaos it can pursue. There's genericand then there's downright formula; The Rocker is akin more to thelatter. The bottom message of The Rocker forms a very loose "rags to riches"story to some degree, detailing a lucky few whose dreams come true andare given a chance of a lifetime. The chances are then that if you haveseen any movie from the seemingly endless array of genre examples, thatyou will have seen this one before. It's not a bad effort by any means,no, but it isn't a remarkable one either. Instead it simply takes aby-the-book approach to telling a lightly engaging, sometimes catchystory that will be sure to make you laugh quite a few times, and inthis is The Rocker's greatest strength. Fronted by a character thatremains as the only memorable element of the feature, this rock show isstandard fare pop-rock; catchy, easy to enjoy and acutely structuredbut at the same time utterly disposable, overly produced and withlittle soul to punctuate the rock.- A review by Jamie Robert Ward (http://www.invocus.net)
Anybody with music in their blood will relate. Good little movie withgood music, good budget, good action and no anoying smart kids. Welldirected with originality. Watched it late at night, and i was ableto make it through....had to be good heh !
Yesterday, I had stayed up for 24 hours, and I watched this movie along the way! I thought it was extremely funny and perfect for any teenager who likes Rock 'N Roll. Robert Fishman is kicked out of the band Vesuvius, and for 20 years, he tries to be normal. When is nephew and their band A.D.D. need a drummer, Fish reluctantly agrees. The band is finally given the chance to tour around America. Fish actually becomes friends with his new band members, until they have to play with his old band, Vesuvius. Will they make it to the big time? I highly recommend THE ROCKER!!!
I think that the rocker is so funny
