Director Asif Kapadia tries too much

This is not a horror movie. Director Asif Kapadia has created a suspense movie that contains many scenes which show the ground and dirt roads instead of the good cast of actors that he could have used to make a more enjoyable action packed movie.Right away, I wanted to see this movie because Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in it. That fact alone is worth one star. On the positive side, the actors in this movie a very good. Gellar plays a salesperson who visits Texas and suddenly becomes overwhelmed with visions about a murdered woman. The spirit of this murdered woman seems to manifest itself within Gellar's visions. On the negative side, the movie fails to actually "show" the spirit. In addition, there are many unecessary long dull scenes which should not have been included in the movie. Director Asif Kapadia tries too much to build suspense but fails to ever "shock" the audience with any surprises during the movie. The DVD itself does offer some alternate scenes that were deleted and it also offers a rather interesting alternate ending.During most of this movie, the camera would languish and focus on the ground or a road for what seems to be minutes at a time. Then, nothing. No surprises, no shocks. This movie is very, very, dull.I believe the director tries to emulate some Japenese horror movies which tend to have a "dream like" setting, but, unfortunately, Asif Kapadia spends too much time shooting dull and boring camera angles and not nearly enough time shooting the exciting scenes that made Sarah Michelle Gellar popular in the first place. In conclusion, the actors are great. However, the writers and director Asif Kapadia fail miserably to deliver enough action in this movie.I rate this movie three stars only because Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in it and due to the supporting cast. Basically, this is a movie with good actors and a so-so director who does not not create enough suspense and action to keep most of the viewing audience interested. Aside from the good actors, especially Gellar (aka Buffy the Vampire Slayer) this movie is very dull.

The Return

Joanna(Sarah Michelle Gellar)has remained out of the state of Texas forsome time, while still working mostly on the road winning clients for abusiness she works for. As a child, she had a mental breakdown. Shekept seeing mysterious images while cutting herself apparently becauseof the horrors of what was there presented to her. At a carnival, weget a look inside what Joanna as a child sees..a male figure, shroudedin darkness, who calls out for his "Sunshine." Joanna takes a chancere-entering Texas, while infuriating a co-worker who wanted to win overthe same company(Adam Scott). She immediately experiences weirdoccurrences such as her radio's insistence in playing the Patsy Clinetune, "Sweet Dreams". Later she experiences a trip into a bar she hasnever seen the inside of in a little dust stop called La Salle. Shealso sees the face of a woman named Annie(Erinn Allison)in the mirrorreflecting back at her. Meeting Terry Stahl(Peter O'Brien)in a bar,Joanna remembers him from her dream. Her co-worker has followed Joannato La Salle still fighting mad about losing the job to her. Trying torape her in her hotel room, Terry comes to Joanna's rescue. They strikeup a quiet friendship and she realizes he has lost a wife..the verywoman whose face she saw in the mirror. As time continues, Joanna seespast memories of Annie, as her murder unravels who that mystery man isthat haunts her visions. My question after giving this flick some thought was why would Joannacontinue to remain in this state if she was okay outside of it. Iscuriosity in such a foreboding place worth the torment that isconstant. I felt that despite all the mystery surrounding the manJoanna is constantly running from(the man who seems so real because ofthe fear Annie experienced that night), the film ends with rather awhimper than a bang. I dunno. The way the film explains how Joannainherits the ability to see through Annie's eyes that night she waschased and killed didn't quite go over well with me.But, I felt the filmmakers and cast tried hard to create a uniqueexperience even if the film fails.

Pretty good

I got to see the advance screening of this movie too, way in advancethough it wasn't a star studded screening.About the movie, one thing must be said is that this movie is reallyinteresting and mysterious though it cannot be compared to other movieslike saw, mindhunters as this movie does not have gore at all.It can be compared to the butterfly effect as it has that supernaturalkind of story which is very well written and i will go on to say thatto me this was better than the butterfly effect. Most importantly theacting is top of the line from all the actors specially Sarah's. Theway this movie is directed is also very intriguing and i really have toadmire Asif's direction.Well if you want to watch an amazing, interesting and kind of athriller movie you must watch this as it is certainly worth a watch.7/10

Deja vu - I think I've seen this film before.

Pity Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar plays Joanna Mills, a 25 year old travelling saleswoman who has been experiencing weird flashbacks to events that she never experienced, ever since she was 11. As part of her job, she travels to Texas, where the flashbacks become more frequent and turn into a strong feeling of deja vu. Did she really witness a woman's murder and is someone now trying to kill her?Pity also the viewer of this movie. As I saw this movie, I too was overwhelmed by a strong feeling of deja vu. I was certain that I had seen this film before, and yet, I can assure you, I hadn't. Perhaps it was under a different title, like, say "A Stir of Echoes"?"The Return" is neither original, nor is it a well-made film. For the most part, this film is a one-woman show and Gellar is not a strong enough actor to pull this off. This film merely serves to demonstrate why she has never managed to rise above B-grade horror movies. The story is often hard to follow and the payoff at the end is not adequate to compensate the viewer for the confusion that they are forced to experience. When I finally learned why Gellar's character was experiencing the flashbacks, I didn't care and wasn't impressed.Don't waste your time or money on this film. You've probably already seen it anyway.

Very Well Done!!

I saw this film last night not knowing what to expect. What I found wassomething excellent. Now this movie does require a few things beforewatching however; an IQ over 50, bit of patience, and the knowledgethat gore and cheap thrills don't always mean a good film. The film was shot beautifully and the acting was really well done! However my only issue was that at times the film does drag and that'swhere patience is required because it is worth it in the end.For those looking for a film full of cheap thrills, excessive gore andno plot or decent acting in sight then this is NOT the film for you. However if you're after a solid Drama/Thriller with a supernaturalelement then definitely check this film out.

Very good despite very few frills

I have always been a die-hard horror fan, but lately I've been gettingfrustrated. Almost every new movie is the same: if it's not theraven-haired ghost, then it's the over-the-top slaughter fest. Now, Ilike gore, and I like Asian horror, but I also like seeing somethingnew. And I felt like The Return was that something. The Return has practically no gore. It doesn't have an evil ghost orcreepy kids. It doesn't have endless plot twists. It doesn't have a lotof effects. But it certainly didn't need any of that stuff to be one ofthe most unsettling movies I've seen in a while. I'd forgotten whatit's like to be scared at the movies! It was very intense at moments, and really kept me on edge. Yes, the scares are simple, but they areundeniably effective. I had chills almost the entire time, and jumpedrepeatedly. Despite being a very creepy, very chilling movie, it canbest be described as a horror-love story, like a Lakehouse for horrorfans; the ending was even pretty affecting! It might not be the kind of movie it's advertised to be, but the Returnis definitely worth seeing.

An excellent find & I had never heard of it!

I came across this dvd at the store and picked it up because The story sounded interesting and Sarah Michelle Gellar is in it. I was a little sketchy about watching it, being as I had never heard of it and it looked like a low budget film, but decided too give it a try. So, I threw it in that night and what a surprise! This movie was so much better than I expected and the plot was great, if you understood it! Maybe some of you didn't and thats why there are some bad reviews here. Anyway, there has been other movies similar too this one, but in this day in age with all the movies and shows out there in the last sixty years, what new, really fresh ideas are left? It's all been done before in one movie or another.

stokealty 2013-05-16 15:32:44

The Return should have stayed away.

Watching this film with a load of avid cinema fans we all came outabsolutely disappointed.Michelle geller plays a woman who has nightmares about a murder thattook place fifteen years before. The time cutting from one dimension toanother places too much work on the audience to work out exactly whatis going on, leading to a plot that isn't thought through well, whilstthe acting is poor and the script even poorer. The supernatural film doesn't live up to expectations, the onlypositive part of the film is its length (85 mins). Even this wasexcruciating due to the dire state of the film. Yet another contestantfor the worst film of the year.

2013-05-16 04:40:32

GREAT MOVIE!

These other reviewers must be fans of more blood and guts type horror movies, which this is not. Instead, 'The Return' is more of a supernatural thriller, filled with unbelievably creepy scares, the kind of stuff that has your hair standing on end. It's smart, intense as hell. I was literally watching it on the edge of my seat, jumping out of it during a whole bunch of different scenes. If you're looking for something cool and different, check this one out. Highly recommended.

Slow, lack of script and a Dodge Ram commercial

Not a great film, but better than Grudge 2, which was woeful. There is a reason why people will like this film....they are 12 -17year olds which is who the intended audience is. Yes it tied togetherat the end....by then i was eying my watch hoping the film didn't makeit past the 90min mark. Thank gawd it didn't! I also found thecontinued focus on the Dodge Ram 1500 annoying...why was this done, there is no reason. Yes she is driving a truck...we got that in thefirst few scenes. One other annoying aspect of the film were the manyscenery shots: barren land, or a sunset or a road. To many and it lookslike you are trying 'fill' the movie to make 87mins. The story wasinteresting, the script was well...poor. It was the writers second showso he can only improve on the material he has written.

Someone please stop this woman from acting in any more films!

What a waste of my time. I was bored to tears from the terrible directing, acting, cinematography, and editing. Sarah Michelle Gellar is worthless as an actress and same goes for Asif Kapadia as a director. Every shot in this movie was about five minutes long and it was always Gellar walking up to a door. Walking through a door. Walking up some stairs. Walking down some stairs. Walking into the next room... How much walking can one person do? And why do we have to see every footstep? Do you get what I'm saying here? this movie was so so so boring that I just turned it off. Forty five minutes into the movie and nothing had happened yet, I couldn't take one more minute of it.

Don't Let The Cover and name fool you....

this movie is not scary and it is boring slow moving and stupid.

poyrazbaklan 2013-05-02 00:13:27

are we supposed to be entertained?

So rarely would I be let down by movies I had no hopes of, yet theReturn managed just that. I only heard that it had a rather sillypremise but still wanted to see it just because of Sarah MichelleGellar. I know her Buffy years are over, I know her career is in arather steep decline and she wasn't much of a good actor to begin with;but still. And still I was disappointed. They managed to createcharacters that there is no way you can relate to. You are not informedin the beginning enough to care about them. Yes, something has happenedto SMG when she was small and yes she is haunted by it, but the mysteryis never enough to draw you in. You just watch the movie, kept awake bythe few scares it offers and then get the revelation in the end, whichis not very interesting at all. The rest is her just trying to lookscared and/or mystified. I am not going give away the twist at the end, because I am not sure if you can call it a twist. But I can say it isillogical(duh, supernatural), uninteresting and uninspired.

pumibel 2013-05-01 16:50:11

Way better than I expected

I marked that this would contain spoilers just in case, but myintention is not yo give anything away and ruin the suspense. I have anannoying habit of guessing key points in mysteries while watchingmovies (I thankfully do not make remarks out loud). I was totally off on my tentative guesses about this one. It is a verysuspenseful film. You know something is wrong with Joanna emotionallybut you just can't figure out what is/has happened to her. It very wellcould be a suppressed memory, and psychic vision, who knows? I won'ttell, and I don't think many people would guess what really happened.Sometimes the movie seems slow because it is a very quiet film, buteven the slower parts are highlighting a piece of the puzzle. It is oneof those movies that you want to go back and watch again immediatelyafter you see the ending to pick up all the little clues and dejavu'syou may have missed. The description on the back cover of the DVD isvery misleading, which adds to the suspense.

2013-04-17 19:47:52

a good movie

I really liked the atmosphere on the Return. It was similar to that of the Ring. Very dark, and always unsettling. Everything's so dreary it's almost like the film is in black and white. While Sarah Michelle Gellar is a great actress and really fits the roll for any kind of suspense or horror storyline (not to mention one of the hottest women I've ever seen) something was missing in this movie. The main story was really not that interesting, or intense. It was good enough to keep me watching, but in the end, I'd rather see the Ring or the Grudge again. Watching Sarah Michelle explore a nearly deserted town for an hour and a half wasn't as scary as it probably sounds. She's basically going around trying to find clues about a murder, and while this is happening, strange things start to happen to Sarah. Throughout the film, she sees things that aren't really there. While that's not really the problem I have with the movie, it's not as suspenseful as I had hoped. I can't figure out why either. Most of the time thrillers such as this one have a complex story that makes me want to come back and see it again. However, the plot was so obvious in this film, I don't know if I will return (no pun intended) to it again any time soon. Despite my complaints, it was a good movie and definitely worth watching. The acting was great, the story was alright, and it DOES have its share of creepy moments to recommend watching. Don't go in expecting a classic, though.

A Mockery

I just got back from the film and I'm completely appalled. This movieis an absolute mockery to all of mankind. The theatre I was in maybehad 4 other people. This movie was recommended to me and I couldn'tbelieve that this person liked it. I can't believe that any sane humanwould like it. There was no plot NO PLOT AT ALL. It was a joke. How canyou make a movie about nothing. This movie only goes to show whyHollywood is in such a shambles. I can only just look at the spiral ofthe "Horror Movie" industry and giggle. What a travesty to allfilmaking, this is true of all the new "teen horror flicks"Grudge,Boogeyman,Ring,Saw series. It is all such trash. Don't supportthis kind of hogwash!

t_mories 2013-04-17 12:35:29

So very disappointing

Anticipating a chilling story and stand out performance from Gellar thecinema emptied and everyone began talking the film was not enthrallingin any shape or form. The storyline was all over the place, predictableand not in any what intriguing it was one big let down. I had beenexcited from the trailer but unfortunately there is no substance tothis film above all the acting was atrocious and was very disappointedwith Gellars portrayal of a women suffering from murderous visions shedidn't seem too bothered or scared her character was flat and heracting did not do it justice. This film was poorly scripted thedialogue didn't fit with the story and for something in theory soterrifying on screen it wasn't fleshed out enough. Poor poor poor
