Christmas Classic

We originally saw this movie on television and my kids fell in love with it. My children have worn out the video we purchased. The music, animation, and of course the story are wonderful! It is a great family video for any time of the year.

A timeless animated gem from the classic 90s

I will admit, I have seen the Nutcracker adaptations including theBarbie version and the Macaulay Culkin version (in which I did enjoy itreally), but I think that this animated gem is the most faithful to theE.T.A. Hoffman story and the ballet in which it was based on. I wasdisappointed by the mixed reviews from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes(and not this website) who said "the animation was shoddy" and I thinkthat it has some nice background and the colors were so lovely. Thecharacter models are fabulous and the Princess Perlipat story wasexplained quite well in a Looney Tunes-esque style.The voice acting is incredible. Megan Follows did great as Clara withher lovely voice, Phyllis Diller did a good job as the wicked andcreepy Mousequeen, Peter O'Toole did great as Pantaloon who was sofunny during the movie, Mike McDonald did a fantastic job portrayingthe funny and frightening Mouseking. Yes, there are some violence in akids movie and would frighten those who are 8-12, but the action wasvery intense (I found that character a perfect description from thebook since he was the one who had gotten so much abuse from his mother.In fact, I felt sorry for him). Peter Boretski did very good as UncleDrosselmeier and let's not forget Kiefer Sutherland's amazingperformance as Hans/The Nutcracker with just a right tone for theprince.The music is the best aspect throughout the entire film. The sparklingmotifs from his beautiful ballet score captured the spirit of the storywith emotional moments where Clara decides to go back to her home andgrow up instead of staying with the Nutcracker which is heartbroken andher final battle with a dying Mouseking.The Nutcracker Prince is an enjoyable experience for me and I thinkthis would be recommended to Nutcracker fans as not only one of thebest Christmas films of all time, but one of the best Nutcrackeradaptations to date from the classic 90s.

A sweet Christmas classic...

I remember seeing this film only once when I was young on CartoonNetwork, and being completely enchanted. And though it was many yearslater when I saw it again, I immediately remembered its charm andsweetness. It's a fun take on the classic, with an innocence that makesit continue to dazzle me even now.Now, the animation was not the quality of Disney, but I wouldn't evencompare it to Disney. Because one must remember that Canada's animationbudget was not very good at the time it was made. However, despite thelow budget, it's very nicely done. I especially enjoyed the sillyanimation during Drosslemyer's story. It was silly and well done. Thecharacters were all enjoyable, and the relationship betweenHans(Nutcracker) and Clara was childlike and enchanting. Nothing tooforward or out there... simple yet enjoyable. I loved how they matchedthe lovely Nutcracker music to scenes throughout the film, it made itso enjoyable to watch. This film definitely deserves a chance, and Istrongly recommend it to families everywhere.

Totally classic

This movie is excellent for all ages. I love the classic tale of hero's and magical places existing in the imagination! I also like it because of the setting.

So memorable

This is such a memorable movie. I grew up on it and now I share it with my little sister each year as one of our Christmas traditions. The movie is cute, funny, entertaining, and more. The characters are lovable and the content is interesting. It is a movie you can enjoy as a family or that a child can appreciate on her or his own. Do not miss out on this movie.

love the theme!

Not at all what I was expecting!!

I purchased this DVD based on all the positive reviews, however after viewing it, I was extremely disappointed. I watched this movie with my two-year old son and my four-year old daughter. The movie starts out simple enough w/Clara and Fritz heading home to the party. However, the storyline vears off from the original ballet version when Drosselmyer begins to explain to Clara how his nephew became the Nutcracker. It takes the viewer into a mini-subplot about a king (who is rather rude) and his Queen (whom I assume is supposed to resemble Mother Ginger?). I found this part of the storyline to be annoying and unnecessary. My daughter (who has seen the ballet version of the Nutcracker) kept looking at me confused wondering who these characters were (since they are not part of the ballet version). Then my two-year old basically jumped into my lap when the Queen Rat's son (very ugly and mean looking) came back to life after it appeared to be dead. I am fully aware of the battle between the mice and the soldiers and expected a certain amount of violence. However, when the camera zooms in closely on what appears to be a dead rat and then the rat jumps up and roars w/it's ugly face, I don't find that appropriate for small children. Talk about causing nightmares! My daughter was also very disappointed that there was no Land of Sweets (this movie has Land of Dolls) and that the "best part" was missing (performances by foreign countries -- China, Arabia, Russia, etc.). This movie was a huge disappointment!!!! Not recommended if you're looking for the ballet storyline.

Is there french audio track available on the DVD? It's very important, i d'ont have the DVD, if there french audio track, I'll buy it for my mother who dosen't understand english , so please tell me! My mother want really want this movie.

The Nutcracker Prince

A must-have to a family's christmas collection! The kids want to watch it over and over again. The ending theme song is very touching and perfect for the story. I hope this comes out in a DVD version.

Good music and animation, but I feel pity for the mouseking.

The Nutcracker Prince is a good family classic for the family in the christmas spirit. But I feel sorry for the mouse king, he's just misunderstood! (wouldn't you be with a mom like phyllis Diller?) Maybe if someone helped bandaged his poor tail, it would of have a happier ending and a lot less bloodshed! Otherwise it's a good movie.

A wonderful holiday tale

I remember watching this many years ago with my younger siblings during Christmas and have been looking for it. I'm glad it's available on DVD now so that I can share it with my preschooler. We watched it this afternoon and I was happy that the magic of the story and animation is still there, and my preschooler loved it too. This version of the Nutcracker remains more faithful to the E.T.A. Hoffmann's version of the story.Young Clara (voiced by Megan Fellows of "Anne of Green Gables") receives a wooden nutcracker at Christmas from toymaker Drosselmeier, who regales her with the story of how the nutcracker came to be the way he is. That very night, Clara has dreams about a fantastical battle between the Nutcracker Prince (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) and the evil Mouse King, and the outcome is one that not only affects the Nutcracker's freedom but young Clara's future as well. The accompanying music by Tchaikovsky enhances the animation and makes it all the more magical. The themes explored include those of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. This is a family friendly feature that will entertain both children and adults. Recommended.

Childhood Memories...

I love this movie. It is a classic. I grew up on it and I still watch it to this day. It has a very sweet story and lovely music. It is also has funny moments but probably more so for children. If you are seeking a cartoon that is entertaining but not laden with violence this is a good choice. I only wish it would come out on DVD.

Love this film

I love this movie, it has to be my all time favorite Kiefer Sutherland movie of all time.The story is a classic, and good film for kids to watch.
