An old man in a nursing home reads a story to an old woman each day. The story he reads follows two young lovers named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun. They met one evening at a carnival many years ago. Allies parents separate Noah and Allie. They disapprove of Noahs lack of wealth, and move Allie away. After waiting for Noah to write her for several years, Allie meets and becomes engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon. In a local newspaper, Noahs picture catches Allies eye. He is standing in front of a fully restored, 200 year old home. The article is filled with praise for his accomplishments. Allies heart nearly bursts. The last time she saw this house it was a rotted decaying shamble. She stood enfolded in Noahs arms in the great entryway and listened to his plans to buy and restore this house. Just the way she wanted it. With her love for Noah still alive, the picture pulls at her heart. She has to go back, see if Noah is okay, and tell him about her marriage. They both think the echo deep in their hearts, the one that has lasted all these years, is not shared by the other. The cry they could not stifle. It wasnt over for me.
I watched this movie last night and enjoyed it very much. As stated insome of the other reviews, this is a fairly typical boy from wrong sideof the tracks meets rich girl, boy and girl fall in love kind of movie. What makes this story somewhat different is the way it is presented: anold man reading the love story to an old woman in a nursing home. Itwas the two senior citizens and their relationship in the movie whichtouched me the most. The main characters were wonderfully cast and makethe story come to life. The setting in a small southern town makes forsome lovely scenery. I found the movie to be somewhat predictable onthe whole, and also a little unrealistic but still a wonderful lovestory.
I really enjoyed the Notebook. It was a tearjerker but I watch it everytime I catch it on cable. I love Nicholas Sparks' stories. I hope theymake more of his books into movies. I also loved A Walk To Remember. The Notebook makes me cry every time I watch it but I can't help butwatch it whenever I can. I love Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams bothseparately and as an on-screen couple. The movie was very well done. Ithought Joan Allen played the snobbish mother to perfection. I like theway Ryan Gosling's character was in contrast to Rachel's character. Ilove the fact that even though they argued all the time they loved eachother unconditionally. I especially like the fact that he never lefther side even through her illness. Nobody tells a story like NicholasSparks and I hope he keeps writing. I want to see more from RyanGosling, he is soooooo SEXY!!! I liked him in Remember the Titans also.He looks especially good with the facial hair. Everyone out thereshould check out The Notebook if you have the opportunity. Go out andbuy the DVD right away.
'The Notebook' is a lovely, sweet film based on the novel of the samename written by Nicholas Sparks. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams have atouching chemistry throughout this film that it brings tears to youreyes. Romance is not really my cup of tea, but I watched this with somefriends once and did manage to cry a little. The story takes a while toget going, but once it's all set then it is worth following. Theromance is tacked on for the majority of the picture, but the truth atthe end of the film makes the moment sweet and touching. This movie isdefinitely one that any romance fan will want to see again and again. If you want a movie that can make your boyfriend cry, then check out'The Notebook.'
I really loved this film but surprisingly enough it really never tookoff in Ireland. When I heard that this film was released I deliberatelyread the book first because I'm a firm believer that the books arebetter. In this case I feel the film hit the target spot on. It wasbrilliantly edited and I thought that the two younger leads werefantastic but then I've been a big fan of Rachel McAdams since MeanGirls. I thought she played the role of Allie superbly and it justshows what a fantastic actress she is. To brutally honest though I wasnever as interested in the older couples story and I enjoyed it morewhen they stuck to the main story. But luckily I did buy the DVD abouttwo weeks ago and I definitely think that it gets better every time youwatch it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good oldfashioned love story.
I finished watching this without any other thought that how good thiscould really be if there wasn't a notebook at all, kinda Blue Valentinebut happy and less gritty. We've seen this corny, retrospective methoda thousand times and I hate they used it here. A great film spoiled.Someone should cut all 'they're old' scenes out like Tarantino fans didwith Pulp Fiction and then see how it looks like. Bet a lot better thanoriginal. Seriously.Other than that it's wonderful and so effortlessly acted by Rachel andRyan. Eight is what it deserves without mentioning 'old people's housescenes', with them it should go point lower.Meh, they were so close in making such a great film and blew it. Such ashame.
Embarrassing and atrocious. A charade that insulted me beyond allconceivable belief. How could something so dreadful be given an 8? Someof the acting was OK, however I was not entertained. It left me feelinghungry. The score it got can only be put down to an abuse of the voting system, because this is not better than, for example, lost in translation, which scored less, I recall.James Garner was mildly enjoyable.Everybody else was either wooden, overly ambitious in their acting orclichéd to the extent of me expecting a "gawd bless us, every one" atthe end.
Keep the Kleenex nearby. I didn't know Gena Rowlands and James Garnerstarred in this until it came on Starz on Sunday afternoon. I lovethese guys. Some one I know who saw this, told me that if they weretalking to anyone but me, they would have called it a chick flick, butthat he still thought it was a good movie. I think the story is superband the acting as well. Sets and costumes great for the 40's scenes.Definitely worth watching once, unless you like to cry. Two of the besttear jerkers are "Schindlers List" and "What Dreams May Come". Own bothDVD's, but hardly watch them. You have to be in a special kind of moodto watch an extremely emotional movie.
The Notebook is not only one of the best portrayals of love I have everseen on screen, it is also one of the best films of any kind that hasbeen created. The whole movie holds you in captivity and suspense, watching time move forward in another's life while wondering where itall meets up to in the end. Each actor/actress IS the character, andthe film is directed and filmed perfectly. As things begin to revealthemselves, you feel the frustrations of the characters while at thesame time admiring their courage and strength, and you hope beyond hopethat things play out 'properly'. I can say that a more perfect endingcould not have been scripted for this film. I absolutely recommend it!
Let's face it, "The Notebook" is what used to be called a "woman's film", and these days, "a chick flick". It's a romantic tearjerker, based on a book that was... a romantic tearjerker. With the exception of James Garner and Gena Rowlands it's a well made movie. Let's be honest, there is no way in the world that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams would ever grow old and look like Garner and Rowlands! The best thing about this film is Rachel McAdams. This young star gives such a luminous performance as Allie, that it's impossible to take your eyes off her whenever she's on the screen. It's a warm, human and heartfelt portrayal that's so refreshing to watch that you just know this young lady was made for the part. Ms McAdams has a bright future ahead of her, make no mistake about it. Ryan Gosling does some of the best brooding captured on film as Noah. This is not a great film, but it's rescued time and again by the wonderful Rachel McAdams. Her smile alone is worth the price of the DVD. Sorry folks, I know the entire plot revolves around Garner, Rowlands and the notebook, but I was satisfied with the 1940's love story told in flashbacks. High marks also for the period detail, but five solid stars for Rachel McAdams!
I hesitated to watch this movie for almost 2 years until I got into theNetflix club and saw a little of the movie. I then couldn't wait toreceive it by mail but instead, I ran out to the Video store and rentedit. It was only a dollar to rent but I can sure say one thing. It wasthe best dollar that I ever spent. I never had a movie that moved menor made me shed so many tears and as soon as my wife came in fromshoping, I told her that its a must see movie and then started to tellher the who story. Before you knew it, I was at the end and stillcrying. I am one of those guys that don't easily get moved by moviesbut this one got to me. Don't get me wrong, It was tears of joy with alittle taste of sorrow all thru out.You will love it! I promise.
Although this movie has accrued much acclaim by critics and fans alikesince its release, it has yielded no positive impact on the world offilm or society in general. It has led a generation of young women tobelieve that there is a Noah for all of us, and we deserve to be justas "misunderstood and rebellious" as Allie. "The Notebook", along withother popular rom-coms, has left most girls with a muddled line betweenfiction and reality. Though Nicholas Sparks may be talented as afiction writer, it is only because he knows how to manipulate thefemale mind into an emotional puddle. Aside from the beautiful Southernsetting (a Sparks trademark) and Ryan Gosling occasionally sweaty andshirtless, this movie provided not only no relatability for me, butalso did not provide even a fictitious escape.
When I first started watching the movie, it was just another movie to me. But after about 45 minutes into it .. I was hooked to the screen, and even cried which hasen't happened in a long time watching a movie! One of the best love movies ever seen! A MUST SEE.
There is a song that plays doing The Notebook DVD commercials it roughly going like this "I feel so alive this is all i feel inside" it is sung by a female however the song is not on the soundtrack if anyone know the name or artist of the song please email me it to at dhdel@aol.com thanks
This is the best love story I have ever seen. This is one of thosemovies that come only once, while you are still young, but yet impactsthe way you view love, passion, romance, and just the part of, love canconquers anything. The Director did a wonderful job of not taking outtoo much of the book, but the parts he did change where perfect. Heydid you know this book based on a true story. If you are in the moodfor a tear jerker, this is the one. You will cry in laughing, you crybecause of the love that these two characters had for each other, andwill cry ......, well I won't say too much. Don't wanna give too muchof the movie away. Abyways, these movie has officially become my mostfavorite movie of all time. The scenery in this movie is alsobreath-takingly beautiful.
I must admit I'm not a huge fan of romance movies, in fact I don't evenremember the last time I've seen one that I haven't fell asleep throughor laughed at. But after dodging my wife's request to watch with herafter she rented it a week ago, I finally yielded so I can move on withmy life and ended up being somewhat impressed."The Notebook" is really a two-sided story regarding an elderly man(James Garner) in home that reads a love story to another elderly womanon a daily basis. The love story itself is about two love birds in thebeginning of adulthood and troubled by various obstacles in life likeher overbearing parents and his lack of "successfull" lifestyle. Noah(James Gossling) plays a free-spirited, blue collared lumber yardworker that is smitten by Allie, (nicely played by Rachel McAdams) arich, southern belle with strict parents looking to break out of hermold. Yes, it's somewhat a "Dirty Dancing", bad boy/good girltug-of-war relationship, but the movie delves deep into their lives andyou soon forget the typical clichéd baseline. The acting is pretty good, and quite exceptional for Rachel McAdamswhose has played career draining, teen queen roles in the likes of"Mean Girls" and another Rob Schnieder flop "Hot Chick." Seriously, shemust have one of the best agents in the business to pull for a deeprole that required acting, and pulled it off. Gossling does a somewhatnotable job as the nomad lover and of course James Garner is JamesGarner. The story of Gossling and McAdams, coupled with therelationship between Garner and the other elderly woman is what reallyputs this movie together. The ending is pretty predictable along withmost of the plot, but in the end it all pays off.If you're not a romance fan and totally dismiss movies like this Idon't blame you. But, at least give it a chance when you're totallyburnt out of other movies or if your significant other is jonesing fora chick flick, pick this one up.
I've just finished watching this movie and I can't stop thinking aboutit.I've loved it, I could watch it again and again. I've been cryingalmost during the whole film, sometimes of sadness and sometimes ofhappiness. And in spite of all the tears that I've cried, it has mademe feel comfortable with the life that I'm living because it makes mereally believe that true love exists, and that every Allie in thisworld has its own Noah, and that there will be thousands of Lonsunconsciously trying to persuade us from keep looking for our Noah orAllie. I know it's just a movie, but everything it's possible, andalthough this movie is, in the end, just that, a movie, it has given methe most valuable treasure of all, hope. Hope to keep looking for myNoahWhat do you think? What makes this film so different from the othermillions of films?P.S.Sorry for my English, I did my best, but I'm Spanish...
I'm not usually a crier, but this movie made me shed some tears. Ifyour looking for a release, this love story is perfect for a good cry.The actors are excellent! This is a movie for all ages of lovers. GenaRowlands and James Garner are well-known classic actors who caught myMom's interest to see this movie. The new actors who play young Allieand Noah catch the interest of the younger age group, especially afterwinning their MTV award for best kiss on screen. The format of themovie keeps you interested because it switches from present day to thepast and back again. The plot consists of real life drama which issuspenseful enough to keep you glued to the screen to see what happensnext. I recommend this movie to everyone whom has ever been love.
As close as it gets to a modern day Gone With The Wind outside ofTitanic. This epic love story demonstrates the perfection of greatwriting, acting, and directing. It is one of the few times where thenovel wasn't destroyed by the movie and only makes one curious as towhy this is such a rare case of successful articulation and execution. The story of Noah and Allie is the one that each young girl fantasizesabout coming true her whole life. The spark, the magic one feels intheir heart when meeting the one they are destined to share life with. This is one of the most poetic and eloquent performances and shows offthe great talent of both Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
Well, I won't go into the plot as others have already done so, but I will tell you that this movie rates right up there with the best of the best love stories. To me, it doesn't even matter who starred in it or who produced it, or who's photos were in the album. The story emphasizes that two people who 'click' upon dating and feel that driving passion of wanting to be with each other WILL find a way to do so in spite of all obstacles - even if it seems to be fate that brings them together for the long duration. I believe there really are men out there who desire one woman only and will do anything to have her return the feelings. Some will remodel a house and wait for years for his love to find him again. Some will write letters on a daily basis, even though there's no return from them. I also believe two people with opposite upbringing can complement each other, as this movie so eloquently demonstrates. All lives twist and turn. But when we KNOW what is right for us and make the decision to follow our hearts, only good can manifest. This movie is more than a story about two people who fall in love or about dying in our old age. It's about doing what we feel led to do from within, in spite of opposing views and opinions. If you have any emotions at all, you will love this movie, as many others have done before you.Gail Gupton, Author: The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment and Seekers of Truth.
This movie starts out innocent enough, and the entire thing couldn'thave been any sweeter than it was. The story was magnificent andtimeless, straight to the point and unforgettable. The story takes place in present day and has a constant look back onthe story of one couple's desire to be together through loss andsenility. Even though they are apart throughout large groups of theirlives, they still seem to find each other in the most perfect displayof a humanistic romance. The notebook that is written tells the entirestory to both of them as Allie, the girlfriend, struggles to piecetogether everything. To continue explaining the story would almost ruinit because of the way the film is laid out, but you need to understandevery step. This movie reminded me of such films as Forrest Gump, About Schmidt, &Playing By Heart. There are so many of these great stories out there onDVD that to come across another one almost makes you wish there weremore hours in a day. Everything was perfect in this film, from thedirection to the music pieces that were played to the scenery in everyperiod in which these two met and dated in.I gave it an 8/10 for its appeal to all ages and the universal message, which is almost a comfort to put aside all of the current worldproblems to enjoy a great story like this. Buy it today because you'llwant to keep that DVD for a very long time.
