The Notebook

An old man in a nursing home reads a story to an old woman each day. The story he reads follows two young lovers named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun. They met one evening at a carnival many years ago. Allies parents separate Noah and Allie. They disapprove of Noahs lack of wealth, and move Allie away. After waiting for Noah to write her for several years, Allie meets and becomes engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon. In a local newspaper, Noahs picture catches Allies eye. He is standing in front of a fully restored, 200 year old home. The article is filled with praise for his accomplishments. Allies heart nearly bursts. The last time she saw this house it was a rotted decaying shamble. She stood enfolded in Noahs arms in the great entryway and listened to his plans to buy and restore this house. Just the way she wanted it. With her love for Noah still alive, the picture pulls at her heart. She has to go back, see if Noah is okay, and tell him about her marriage. They both think the echo deep in their hearts, the one that has lasted all these years, is not shared by the other. The cry they could not stifle. It wasnt over for me.

Astounding....

This is my new favorite movie! I can't wait until it comes out on dvd. My boyfriend and I cried so much through this movie. We were still crying as we walked outside of the theater! And we don't normally cry about a movie!! It's a must-see if you are into movies that actually have something deeper than just sex and violence. Anyone that I know that has seen this movie totally agrees that the Notebook is a classic!!! :)

Beautiful cinematography and high-class actors, but something amiss.

Perhaps I wasn't quite in the right mood for this film when I watchedit. It was a film I had highly anticipated, and I wanted to love it.Don't get me wrong, I did like it. It is an enjoyable and touchingsimple romance, moving through the ages, depicting a generation of love.I wanted to be swept away in the sheer romance. But coming away fromit, I found myself thinking it hadn't quite lived up to it's immensehype. The film starts one fateful summer in the 1940s, and the young couplemeet at a carnival. This is probably one of my favourite scenes in thefilm; unrealistic, but we know the film isn't trying to be realist –it's romantic, and that's the important thing.Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling steal the show, conveying the emotionsof young love superbly; the first steps as they get to know each other;followed by the passion as the couple can never seem to agree onanything, but their love for each other.McAdams is especially outstanding in this feature, and I didn't evenrecognise her from her part in Mean Girls, released earlier that year. She has proved herself as a talented, flexible actress and after seeingher in this I can't wait to see what she does with the part of Clairein movie The Time Travellers Wife, coming out this year, which is basedon one of my favourite books of all time.Alongside the story of the young lovers, we have the parallel story ofan older couple (James Garner and Gena Rowlands). Both also play theirroles well, but it's all a little predictable. Did anyone not see amillion miles ahead that they would be the elderly Noah and Allie? This film does have some genuinely touching scenes; watch out for whenthe children visit Duke and Alison in the residential home – this onehad me welling up; "That's my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is,that's where my home is." We also get a glimpse at what it would be like to lose a loved one toan illness like senile dementia; the painful circumstance where someoneyou've known your whole life can't even remember who you are.All in all, The Notebook is a pleasant way to spend two hours; with anoverwhelmingly romantic and sentimental core, but coming away from it,for me it's not as memorable as other films in the romance genre. Wefollow Noah and Allie as they grow up; falling in love young; livingseparate lives before being reunited again. It tells a story we'veheard and seen a hundred times before, but it does tell it well.

The Notebook is the Best Movie

I loved the movie The Notebook. The book was wonderful and so is the movie. I cried at the end of the movie. Story was great, actors were great. An A+++. Go buy it and enjoy....HB

SImple but wonderful

This movie seems to be postcard perfect, a lesson straight out of thedirector's guide to romantic movies. Boy meets girl at a carnival, lovefrom the other side of the tracks, a date by the water, etc. And yetthe wonderful thing about this movie is that it takes what seems like astory you've heard already (at least in bits and pieces) and stillmoves you deeply. It really speaks about love in a way that mostromantic movies miss by speaking in cliché or over shoot by adding innumerous complications to dramatize things. There have been other greatmovies to comment on love in recent years (Eternal Sunshine, Lost InTranslation jump to mind) but this movie fills a need that those othermovies miss: the need for a straight, sweep you off your feet romance.Too bad there can't be movies like this every year...

A few things I like about The Notebook

SpoilersIt's a story, no it's two stories, both of which we have seen times andagain. To link the two together is perceptive, but that's to the creditof the writer of the book on which the movie is based. The moviemakers, however, are still faced with the task of making something thatwe come across as often as pancake, bacon and chickens (thanks, Noah)into something that at least delights, if not deeply touches theaudience. Generally, it has been successfully done.First and foremost is the cast. The last time I saw Ryan Gosling was inThe Believer, when he plays an explosive, complex character of as Naziwho actually had a Jewish origin. So I know what he is capable of. AsNoah in The Notebook, he displays most of the time a stoicism thatreminds me of Josh Lucas. But then there are one or two explosivemoments when we see the fire in him. Rachel McAdam from St. Thomas,Ontario I've not seen before. In her, I see a little bit of KateBeckinsale. She will go a lot further than the lot in Mona Lisa Smiles. The last time I saw Gena Rowlands was too recent, in Taking Lives, anentirely different role. In Notebook, the role she plays may not seemtoo difficult – someone who has lost her memory (politicians perfectthat performance on a daily basis!) But then, it's in the moment sheregains her memory that we see her true steel. The biggest joy isseeing James Gardner still so active in making movies. True, he has amost winning role to play, but it also needs a winning actor to make itwork. All the scenes between Gosling and McAdam and between Gardner andRowlands have been commented on. Not having gone through all thecomments, I cannot say that no one commented on the one particularscene that really delighted me. This is the encounter between Allie andMartha (Noah's mate at the time, a lonely war widow) at Noah's housethe morning after Noah and Allie rediscovered each other. From themoment the three appear together at the door in the morning, to theevening when Noah sees Martha off in her car, it's so elegantly done, and quite touching. This is one of the movies in which a house plays a very important, pivotal role in the story. Two others that come to mind immediately areShipping News and Life as a House.Younger members of the audience may leave the cinema in a strange mood, not certain whether it's a story in which the lovers live happily everafter. I tend to look at it as an answer to a question posted in thetitle of the Bee Gee's most popular song 'How deep is your love'. JamesGardner (the role he plays) is the answer.

If you haven't seen it, see it!

This is one of the best movies I've seen. The acting was first rate, the chemistry was amazing and the story was perfect. My girlfriend liked the trailer so much that we had to see it as soonas it came out. I liked it so much that we had to see it again (notthat it took much convincing).Funny thing. Both times, at the end of the movie everyone began togiggle. perhaps it was because as people looked around they could tellby all the other red eyes that everyone else enjoyed the movie as muchas they did.If you have not seen this movie yet, then you better get going, you aremissing something great. A perfect 10

The Best!

My favorite movie,I could watch it many times and cry as if I'm watching it for the first time!

You will never forget this movie every time you see old people holding hands together!

Just watched this movie and I like many others writing here cried during the dialog between the old lovers. I work in a hospital and seemany elder couples come in and see the love they have for each othereven after 50 or more years. I also see when one of the two gets sickand lingers on while the other comes and visits them everyday rain orsnow..Much talk about this movie is about the younger actors but therelationship that has lasted ( seen thru the photos in the notebook )is what really made the movie for me. Even when he was losing the truelove of his life he gave up everything else including his house andkids to spend as much time as he could with her! If anyone is readingthis stop and think when was the last time you spoke or visited withyour mother-father-grandparents etc. Life is short and isn't it what weexperience everyday in his or her life what really matters? Not what webought or hope to buy! Watch this movie alone if you feel guilty aboutshowing your emotions to others but watch it for yourself.

Complete Daydream!

This is the best movie if you have a summer love, or no love atall...you can just imagine yourself in Allie's position. the love thatshe feels for Noah is incredibly unbelievable and just the thought ofhaving that euphoria is unbelievable...Every girl dreams of that onehero sweeping them off of their feet, and there always seems to be thatone obstacle that wakes us up to the reality that we don't have thathero. and with the imagination of this movie, it makes us feel like weneed to obtain it even more, to have such a feeling of happiness. It'ssomething that we all desire. and when we imagine ourselves in thismovie, its obtainable.

The notebook is fantastic!

This movie is so moving.I am absolutely in love with this movie. Itruly felt like the actor (gosling) and actress (mcadams) were in love. They really casted perfect for this movie. Those two made the movie, made it believable. The connection and fire between the two sucks youin and you can't help feeling for this couple. It's a beautiful storythat will make you smile and cry at the same time.I definitely neededtissues when i watched this movie. Both times i was a complete mess!Nicholas Sparks is so good at these love stories. If you love a goodromance and like watching really good looking people on the screenyou'll like this movie!

A Movie For Future Generations

I just saw this movie, the day it opened, and i loved every minute ofit. I couldn't keep from smiling and then eventually crying because ofthe emotion. This move shows how young love can evolve into so muchmore-true love. This is a heart-filled movie and every moment is worthseeing it. The movie shows how simple things can make a HUGE differencein your life, and today-with all the technology, we don't seem to see alot of the good things that we could have had. I only wish I could havebeen alive in those days. Ryan is a wonderful fit for Noah, as isRachel for Ally. Your first love may be fate. This is a MUST SEE/MUSTBUY movie!! You'll enjoy it!

Amazing!Beyond words!

This is one of the best romances I have ever seen! No, wait: it is thebest romance I have ever seen. Grate story, wonderful cast, remarkabledirecting! I would have ranked it eleven but unfortunately 10 is thehighest rank. If you like romances (and if you don't, this movie willchange that)and you haven't seen "The Notebook" there is no better timethan now to do that!Ryan Gosling plays the part of Noah Calhoun, a young man that goes toextreme lentos to go on a date with Alle Hammilton (played by RAchelMcAddams) and finally succeeds. A boy from a simple family and abeautiful girl from a very rich family; their love story seemsimpossible, but time will prove that love conquers all.

"The Notebook" is an amazing movie - full of great acting and a very interesting story.

"The Notebook" is an excellent movie. It's the best film I've seen in along time. The acting is superb, and it had my attention throughout theentire showing. The movie's so refreshing because it's very rare to seesuch a pure, deep, touching, and beautiful love story in Hollywoodanymore. This beautiful movie illustrates, plain and simply, soulmates.Ryan Gosling (Noah) and Rachel McAdams (Allie) were the perfect actorsfor their parts. They had a lot of chemistry, which is necessary inthis type of story. I was very impressed by everyone's acting in themovie. James Garner and Gena Rowlands gave very realistic portrayals ofolder Noah and Allie. I think that the main theme of "The Notebook" isthat love can be and is everlasting.

Notebook is a must see; Possible Spoiler...Beware if you've not seen it.

My husband and I watched this with another couple. All four of usreally enjoyed the movie. It is a wonderful movie that I will recommendto everyone I know. I must admit that I'm not normally a "cryer", but Ihighly recommend that no one watch this film unless you have a steadysupply of tissues close at hand. *****SPOILER???****(this is my firstcomment on this site, so I don't know if this is a spoiler or not???Better to be safe and mark it so)I loved the scene when Noah took Allie to the old mansion for the firsttime, and even though they wanted to "prove their love", he was stillgentleman enough to say that she didn't have to go through with it ifshe wasn't ready and that he could wait...that's more indicative oftrue love instead of just some hungry male trying to get in her pants.I loved, loved, loved this movie...but I didn't understand why hermother would keep all those letters. IF she really desperately wantedNoah out of her daughter's life, then why wouldn't she have destroyedthem on the spot? And weren't there inconsistencies with hair colors?Did anyone notice? ********All in all, minor discrepancies aside, this is a must see. For all ages, men and women will love this film. I will certainly add this to my DVDcollection.

Masterpiece!!

This film is one of the best romantic film you will ever see.It grips you from the beginning. It's a tragic tale of love, between 2 people from different worlds.Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams portray their character with absoluteaccuracy. The story is a lesson to anyone who has fallen in love, andteaches you a valuable lesson - Follow your heart !!!1This film is a must watch if you are a fan of films such as Titanic andPride and Predudice. It is a definite tear jerker and will have you guessing all the waytill the end.

my opinion of this movie

i personally just cant get over how much i love the notebook. it is aheartwarming tale of true love. which i think is hard to come by thesedays, not that it doesn't exist or that everyone doesn't have an equalchance at true love, just by the fact that i think a lot of peoplesettle. they settle for less than they should. they get pregnant, theydon't want to wait, they are over-come with feelings of love andnewness that only evaporate after so long if you don't truly love aperson. watching this movie, i became so captured up in the love storyand what was going to happen with these 3 people (ally, noah and lon).for each character was loving in its own way. its hard to point out thevillain in the story, some would say lon b/c everyone is rooting fornoah. but lon really cares for ally just as noah does. i found her momto be the villain by keeping them apart. this movie reminded me of theinnocence of first love, which wasn't that long ago, and how thingsdon't always turn out the way you had planned. sometimes its hard tofollow your heart but its even harder to go through life thinking ofhow you could have changed it.

Nice, but predictable - SPOILER INCLUDED

We had read up on The Notebook and came armed with a pocketful oftissues; however, this film didn't bring out any tears for me or for mywife. I think I felt more emotion when SPOCK died and when ET lived! Weare new to this area (Columbus Ohio - America's heartland) and didn'treally know how the long-time locals would respond - but I'd say onlyabout 1/2 of the audience was sobbing when ***WARNING SPOILER*** theirlove "worked a miracle" and death took them together, peacefully intheir sleep - but this was so telegraphed that when Noah cuddled upnext to his wife, you knew it was coming. Solid performance by JamesGarner - kind of Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood meets Officerand a Gentleman.

from a guy's point of view: pretty good, despite quirks

Like most guys, I made fun of this movie because of the nature of the movie. But I did hear a lot of people say it was good and looking at the preview, I didn't think it would be that bad, I enjoy dramatic movies when I am in the mood. And this week was one of those long weeks, where misery loves company and so I decided to watch Notebook, hoping to see other people's woe's would make me forget about my own.. and it worked. Skip the next paragraph if you do not want to be spoiled. The best thing of the movie, was the acting done by the four major actors. Both the older and younger set of actors did a really good job. I remember Ryan from Young Hercules, but more recently Murder By Numbers. He does a complete role reversal in this movie from brooding killer to brooding romantic. The chemistry with him and Rachel was dead on and sold the movie. Rachel also does a great job, and watching it, I was like I saw her somewhere... Mean Girls i later found out. Seeing the broad range of these actors really made me respect them in their craft, You feel the love Noah has for her, which is mirrored by older Noah, which in turns makes it just as painful n heart retching to watch the later part of the movie. The other great thing of the movie was the story itself, your basic summer fling type of story, its not new but that is only half the plot and the other half makes it all the more interisting and makes tug even more at your heart. Being a student of health, I was at least familiar with the technical aspects of the disease in the movie, which helped enhance the movie for me and made me really feel for the characters. I wasn't surprised when I started tearing, just surprised that I found myself doing so in more scenes than expected. other things to mention is the beautiful setting of the movie and the rich supporting cast of actors from noah's dad, to ally's mom and james marsden from x-men. not to mention the musical score.i have three main quirks with the movie.- in the beg, the movie is set in the south during the summer of 1940. they couldn't digitally remove the cold breathe from the film. it kinda felt more like a late autumn fling, that was more of a technical thing. - the other technical thing, which isn't that big of deal because it was only in one scene was where you see duke looking through the old photographs. I find it odd that they would use the older actors' pictures instead of ryan and Rachel, which kind of took me away from the characters and made you believe that these are 2 separate couples.- The last thing is that i wish they would've done more with the political nature of its time. they briefly grazed WW2 and no mention of racism, especially for a film set in the south in the 40's. but in all fairness, that might have detracted from the movie, especially the racism part but you did see the servants as black. but i think we could've used a scene or two more during ww2. other than that, this is a movie that will stick in you head, it sure did with me, which is why i am writing this. this movie is about love in all shapes in form and the duality of this movie makes it unique from the rest out there. With movies like these, the ending is no big surprise, what makes it is the journey, which I certainly enjoyed the ride.Edti: I liked the movie so much, I read the book. And... the movie is better. I rented the Notebook, I should've just bought the dvd. I am a little harsh but the book isn't that bad, but I enjoyed the movie a lot more.

Doc-40 2012-04-18 01:44:31

A powerful, emotional story...will draw you in after five minutes.

I'm not a crier. I think two movies in my long movie-watching historyhave made me shed tears. The Notebook had me crying, both out ofhappiness and sadness, throughout the entire film. I don't want to giveaway any of the plot, but the love story is nothing new. It's thephenomenal acting and the superb directing make this film a stand-out.There is so much chemistry between the film's two young stars (RyanGosling, Rachel McAdams), that you forget that they are not real lifelovers. These two have bright futures ahead of them. Even for peoplewho are not hopeless romantics (myself included), it would be difficultto watch this movie without truly caring what happens to everyone andhow it will all end. I left the movie feeling happy and passionate; Myhusband left feeling very depressed. But ask yourself, with all theterrible films coming out these days, when was the last time you leftthe theater feeling anything? A definite 10/10. A must see.

a Remarkable Film About the Miracles Of True love

Everyone who Has Not Gone to see this movie @ theaters Hurry up nd go..I loved every minute of this movie. The acting was amazing by thecast.... I fell in love with this story...Before I went and saw the notebook I read the novel and while I admitNicholas Sparks has true talent I don't think I would have read thebook If I had not been in anticipation for the movie...TO me this is a non typical love story... The Movie is a bout twopeople Who meet one summer in a small Town and fall deeply in love...Even though they are split Up they eventually find a way back to eachother and fall in love all over againI have to give nods to all of the cast they did a splendid Job... Iheard how Britney Spears was up for the role of Allie and I have to sayI am glad Rachel McAdams got the part, she was The one who truly shined.. Her last role in Mean Girls was okay but this role Was perfect forher..... And Her leading Man, Ryan gosling was the best as a young Noahwho falls deeply in love with a girl from the "other Side"...Not tomention that he is one of the hottest actors of today( Watch Out Bradin a couple of years he could pass you up)This is truly his greatestRole Yet..... And How could I forget James Garner and Gena Rowlands whoWere both fantastic as the older versions Of Noah and Allie.. They werethe ones who made me cry my eyes out the most(especially in the next tolast scene of the movie) Also Sam Shepard, Joan Allen, and JamesMarsden did Well with the Part they hadthis is truly a wonderful film and it should be seen by everyone...AndAfter this movie I have to say that I believe anything Can happen
