Movie Photos:
We have taken some photos of "The Mutant Chronicles". They represent actual movie quality.
Look it was no master piece, but it was a fun movie that tells aninteresting story that definitely wont bore you from start to finish. It was kind of a cross between 300 and sin city just with a cold wartheme. It was good fun, the effects where cartoony as is most thescenery but its very detailed and far better then a lot of other Bgrade movies i have seen. Overall i wouldn't feel cheated if i saw thisat the movies... i would however of liked a better explanation at theend. It pushes between an A and B grade movie, but is still a goodaction packed flick. Definitely worth the price foradmission!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't for the life of me understand why this movie is sitting at a5.4 on IMDb. It's true that some of the dialogue is corny and there aresome awkward bits, but it is original, fast-paced sci-fi action at it'sbest. Not since Shoot'em Up have I seen a film that started right upfrom the beginning and just kept going. This is not a movie foreveryone, and you certainly can't take it seriously, but if you can sitthrough Crank and have a good time, you will love this one. Thomas Janeand Ron Perlman (as well as a few of the others) are a lot of fun towatch for the duration of the almost-two-hour period, and it's abloody-good time!
I liked this movie the lead character is Indiana Jones, Bruce Willisthat guy from fire fly and 007 combined. I really liked the charactersin this movie there where quite a few that you really begin to careabout.I thought this movie was really deep maybe because I'm a soldiermyself and have witnessed much self sacrifice on the battlefield. Themovie takes place far into the future but the initial combat sceneslook more like ww1 trench war fare, the classic looking weapons seemedto have some quite modern capabilities at any rate i found this styleto be intriguing and fit the films dark and desperate tone perfectly.Once you get passed the harsh language the blood and gore you reallybegin to think what would you do in this situation. Mutant Chroniclesis a very real and touching film, its more closely related to TitanicDeep impact or even Jurassic park more so then resident evil or 28 dayslater. This film dives head first into issues of faith courage andmorality if you could watch shindlers list nightmare on elm streetstarship troopers and band of brothers give Mutant Chronicles a go.
Too many special effects get in the way of the gutsy, gory action abouta suicidal team of futuristic warriors who must destroy a race of clawpeople in a society run largely by four huge corporations. I wish thatI had a dollar for every time that somebody uttered the F-word. ThomasJane of "The Punisher" makes a suitably rugged hero. The good guys aresteadily whittled down by those obnoxious looking zombie like clawguys. Malkovich fans will be disappointed because he has whatconstitutes a cameo. Ron Perlman plays another religious figure. "TheMutant Chronicles" looks like a Jules Verne movie with ourmulti-cultural clan of heroes descending deep within the bowels of theearth to destroy an ancient alien machine that threatens to exterminatemankind. Devon Aoki is good as a badass swordswoman. A dark, grungylooking sci-fi saga with a formulaic plot and enough suspense tocompensate for all those green screened settings.
This movie deserves to be up there with the greatest Sci-Fi horroraction thrillers. It requires no more suspended belief than ANYHollywood block buster, like 'I am Legend', 'Bourne', 'MissionImpossible' etc.The action scenes are VERY good, if somewhat confusing because of shakycamera work, but which movie doesn't have that these days? In otherwords, it's on par with all films of its genre and epoch, and at timesit's not AS predictable as the average Hollywood pulp, in story.Nice parts of Aoki and the other female lead, Anna Walton, and goodfighting scenes by them.Malkovich is a tat predictable, as he plays himself as he has donedozens of times. He's becoming a parody of himself a bit.My only critique is that the Black Guy dies first, how very 60s, 70sand 80s is that. And also, why haven't I heard from this before? I found this whengoogling Spiderwick. ;)
The movie is average but overpriced at $9.99. I would think at $9.99, I should get the movie (digital copy) when it comes out on DVD for free. The idea of pre-theatrical rental is cool and I hope to see more. All in All if you have $10 and 2 hours to burn, buy it.
Mutant Chronicles is the type of fare that usually skips right by thecinematic queue and heads straight for DVD shelves, hoping to getpicked up by those who have a niche to fill. Ill-focused in bothcharacterisation and plot, and suffering from a clashing mix ofseriously thrilling action with less than inspiring drama, the moviedoes well to cater to the needs of those interested in such a premise, yet anyone else -that is, anyone who watches movies to be told amemorable, relevant story- would be wise to leave this one to theexperts. That is not to say that Mutant Chronicles is not without itspositive sides, because it has a handful, mostly laying in itsimpressive aesthetics and design, yet even these elements can't savethe ridiculous plot and stereotypical heroes out to save the day; funat its greatest parts, but downright unremarkable at any other giventime.Set seven hundred years in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future, MutantChronicles sets up a compelling premise that involves the entire worldbeing split into four factions, all at war for the Earth's dwindlingresources. Unfortunately however, this idea which in itself would haveset up a relatively interesting and compelling tale, soon becomes amere backdrop to what is the movie's main interest; mutants. Sent fromspace (or something like that), these mutants, which have been buriedunderground for centuries by humankind, are soon awakened by the warraging on upstairs. From here on in the script switches its attentionfrom the war between humanity, and instead takes a group of clichécharacters and propels them into a battle against mundane, motivelessantagonists, that at times blends in obscure, vague religion to beef itall up a little. To say that going from plot point A to B isunderwhelming would be an understatement; as villains, the mutants doprovide ample threat and at times even scares, but in the end, theamount of focus they are given ruins what would have otherwise been aninteresting mix of politics, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Instead we getlame action/horror mambo jumbo that was present in this year'ssimilarly themed and similarly disappointing zombie-war movie TheOutpost.Of course this Buffy the Vampire Slayer plot is only the tip of MutantChronicles' iceberg of camp silliness. The characters themselves whichconsist of such classics as The War-Battered Hero, The Mysterious NinjaChick, The Religious Preacher Who Finds All The Clues and of course TheSergeant Who Dies Early On And Leaves Everyone Up ****-Creek, arecliché, derivative and soulless. Sure enough, such a movie doesn'tnecessarily need anything more than cheesy underwritten characters towork; it just needs them to be as close to the book as possible, andwhile most stick to their routine for the most part, their dialogue andrespective performers too often fall flat of the mark. Mostsurprisingly disappointing (aside from the fact that Malkovich and SeanPertwee are seen in around three scenes each) is Ron Perlman, whodespite being in a film not too dissimilar to his most recent Hellboyfeature, feels stiff and irritatingly inept at conveying any characterwhatsoever. A mix between Captain Kirk and John McClane, lead manThomas Jane does a much finer job with what he is given, and while hischaracter is 90% cheese, he remains compelling enough in his role tokeep his persona interesting to watch.Without a doubt the movie's biggest selling point however comes fromits visual design which has been produced mainly through blue screenand CGI. Rather than try to create a look that shines with polish andtries to convince every second of its realism however, the look presenthere has its own style and essence. It's a tone that isn't far awayfrom Robert Rodriguez' CG-based work, and although director SimonHunter never quite shows as much ability to craft seamlessly potentimages, he nevertheless displays a vast array of imagination that isalways interesting to watch. However imaginative and strong his talentsare at conveying action and creating visual popcorn though, this styleof erratic, relentless pacing ultimately leaks into the movie's softerand slower moments to detrimental effect; it's hard to find a singleshot throughout Mutant Chronicles that lasts over a few seconds;whether he's switching between profiles or showing us action frominspired and original angles, it's ultimately too much movement at thewrong times. To be sure, such styles are welcome when swords areclashing and rounds are getting fired, but when characters arespeaking, the director's need to keep switching back and forth toooften distracts rather than adds to the drama.Ultimately, whether you enjoy Mutant Chronicles or not will more thanlikely come down purely to personal taste. If you have a soft spot forcheese-ridden science-fiction with twists of war, zombies and CG gore, then of course, this affair should be one to lightly please. For anyoneelse however, there may be some fun to be had here, but only at theexpense of long drawn out sequences consisting of tired, uninterestingcharacterisation and drama. Perhaps cut down into a bite-size quantityand with a little more development in the script area, Hunter's workcould have been far more accessible to those not entirely interesting, but instead is doomed to be loved by the few who collect anything andeverything to do with the niche genre. Entertaining and visuallyarresting, Mutant Chronicles is not a dud by any means, but lumberedwith very little substance to connect all the images and actiontogether, the whole ordeal is one of vague interest, and only to thosewho are interested in the sub-genre.- A review by Jamie Robert Ward (http://www.invocus.net)
I can only imagine that the actors here had nothing better to do for afew weeks.A straight to video movie that managed to get a cinema release on thestrength of the actors involved.I gave it 4 stars because I like the style of the movie, computernoirish. It starts out quite interesting but as soon as the real plotstarts up it all goes to hell in a hand-basket. The plot is full oflogic holes so big you could march the Capitol army through it.Wait for the DVD, wait till it comes out on budget DVD, wait till yourmate buys it and then borrow it.. wait till it comes out on TV.In response to some posters who said they see no plot holes.. We aretalking about one machine up the mountains, it spews out mutants, whocan only walk or run, they can only replicate by dragging their victimsback to the machine (at dragging pace) and yet they take over the worldin a matter of weeks! There's one scene where the hero's are attackedin the air by a mutant controlled craft, but you can tell by thesurprise on the captains face that this was a first so the mutantsdidn't use aircraft very often. The crown on the illogic head was the hero's going back to the machineafter what, a week? a month? a year? how long does a marching mutanthorde take to conquer the world? anyway who do they find, still beingdragged to his doom but a character (Mr Pertwee) who was one of thefirst to meet the mutants when they attacked, what a blatant and dumbplot device to get the main hero away from the rest of gang. And of course there is the fact that the first time the mutants arrivedthey were repelled by sword wielding knights. After 2,000 years ofmilitary evolution it seems nothing really beats a good old sword.
At the beginning of this movie it looks promising and slick, a warbetween mega-corporations but we quickly slip into the super stupidplot of the rag-tag band of tough guys assembled at the last minute togo on a suicide mission to save the world, where is Bruce Willis andthe drill machine when you need them? It also borrows from the 28 dayslater by throwing in some mutants with blades for hands that act likethe zombies from 28 days later in all other respects. So what are we left with in between the borrowed plot vehicles andidiotic mission? Some weird priest looking guys walking around lookingsomber some boring actors looking concerned about their mission butgoing on it anyways, and of course it goes to hell with the secondscounting down .. will they still be able to press the big button thatsaves the world? And I think you can guess how it ends without havingto watch it. There's some interesting spooky visual, but the script, acting, and plot developments are nothing but retarded from start tofinish. It also has that ugly Asian girl Devon Aoki that's been stuck in abunch of low budget sword movies.. I can't stand her inbred cabbagepatch kid face, that didn't help either. Whenever I see her ugly mug,all faith in the movie goes out the window.
I just watched this film today.I was unaware of this film before a few months ago. A few of my friendsshowed me a trailer and said how great this movie was gonna be. Lastweek a friend informed me that it would be playing on Dish networkchannel #383 HDNMV. Excited to see this so soon, I DVR'd it and watchedit today. The introduction had much promise with futuristic weapons in a WWIstyle trench setting. The Steam punk feel was nice. A few introductoryscenes allowed us to get to know a few of the main characters, put usin a safe zone and then violently shake us out of it. Once the actionbegan it was showing so much promise. Then Ron Pearlman came in.....ugh. Now please don't get me wrong, Ireally like Ron Pearlman and have enjoyed quite a few movies he's beenin, but this...this was such a let down. The scenes from this point were contrived and stupid. They cut awaywith no explanation, and mislead the audience into thinking they willhave some relevance. WTF was the issue with the swords, other than theycould be used as a weapon? No relevance whatsoever. These occurfrequently. Scenes that begin to build up the audience have nothing todo with the story. Why do the guys get stapled? What purpose does themachine have other than turning people into prey mantis-undead-guys?There are no Undead-Alien Women? The aliens never came back for itbecause???" The people that Hunter could still hear in the mutant body? The only relevance I found had to do with Pearlman telling him to"jump" and "have faith". This movie was stupid and disappointing.John Malkovich. Why was he in this? I love the Malkovich but this wasdisappointing. He was in the movie for around 3 minutes total time andnot only does he die, but his acting is almost comical. On to thespecial effects. Wonderful until Pearlman enters. After that point itbecomes a B zombie movie. Lots of corn syrup and red dye. Some "Ballsymacho, scenes. Some unrewarding bravado/chivalry scenes, and thenunnecessary killings of newly introduced characters. The Back drops looked reminiscent of movies that were filmed 20+ yearsago. I have seen more cinematic drop cloths after I've painted a carpart. The worst part is being violently halted with the end of the movie. Notsaying I wanted more but its just kind of going along and then *bleep*its over."Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise asfalse, and by rulers as useful."
You may notice that some of the previous reviews for this film havebeen positive. In all honesty I fail to see how anybody can defend it.The reason CGI backgrounds work in films like 300 and Sin City, isbecause it gives a graphic novel feel, which is handy, because 300 andSin City are graphic novels.Mutant Chronicles is a pen and paper Role Playing Game. Not a graphicnovel. Or a comic. Or even a video game. (though a snes game does existcalled Doom Troopers, which is a spin off of the mutant chroniclesstory) So why use CGI?......... Because it's cheaper. Now you KNOW, if this film had been pitched with a request for100million budget, a huge sound stage and location based filming, itwould never have seen the light of day.Now i'm not criticising the actors. The script was terrible, the pacingwas all off and it looked like a straight to video release- but hey, everyones gotta get paid right? Don't bother with this film.If it's post apocalyptic stuff you're after go watch 'After TheApocalypse', or '28 Days Later'
I've just been to an advanced screening of this, Before they finish thefinal cut. At the moment it is a bit rough around the edges, As alwaysThomas Jayne is solid (Who thinks he looks like a young ChristopherLambert) Ron Perlman is dark, John Malcovich does not have a very bigpart.Story is a bit gappy in places and lacks depth. Action is good and thecolour contrasts are interesting...Im hoping they sort out the rough edges for the final cut. This has the prospect of being one of the better films this year. Thanks for reading
I enjoyed this film - don't let some of the critics here put you off.It wasn't at Cannes for a reason! If you're looking for something deep, avoid it. But if it's fairly pointless action and a reasonably paceyscript - give it a whirl. It is as someone else mentioned a kind ofsteam punkish movie - so if you're at all interested in that genre thenit's defo worth seeing.I have to admit that sometimes you think that you're in a video game -but if you were it would be a bloody great one...Certainly doesn't deserve the score it has received on IMDb. Oh and Ithought that Jane was fine...
Now - I am a massive fan of the RPG and the books and background themeswithin them, so for me, this was the ultimate movie. I heard about thefilm ten years ago, but then got told the plug had been pulled on it.I'm so glad it got made. The only thing I didn't like about the film was I wanted more. More ofthe rich background and more of the other types of mutants and thefifth corporation - Cybertronic. Many people may not agree with my review of this film, but if you grewup playing the games and reading all the books like I did, you'll lovethis film.PLEASE MAKE A SECOND FILM MR. PRESSMAN!!!
Can't give this a 10, because it's not a great movie. But if I couldcategorize it as a b-movie, I would give it a 10+. It's not so shiny, and it makes you think you are in for a world of brain hurt; instead,it will amaze you silly and leave you smiling.I am not kidding, this is amazing no bull**it (where it counts) oneheck of a movie. It has it flaws, but it has so much stuff in it thatit's difficult to comprehend. Grim future, mega corporations ruling theearth and at war, mutants (maybe more variation might have been nicerbecause these guys are more like row soldiers made from a single mold, nothing mutatic there), epic evil, monks that are preserving ancientweapon to combat that evil, and steam engine behemoth flyingmachines!!! (you have to love that =). Even the acting is pretty great. That's just some things that I remember. Sure, it has lots of clichés,lots of things do not make sense, and they could have named the moviebetter, but I guess it's for drawing some attention, making you you gosee it just so you can ridicule it. You would be surprised though, thismovie just works, if you have ever enjoyed something that isn't ablockbuster.I don't usually care about who is the director, and who is the writer, but this time it made me curious about what else these guys have made. And I was pleasantly surprised to find another movie there that I likeda lot. Hope we'll see much more of both Philip Eisner and Simon Hunter, and that they keep their style like this.
This review is from: Mutant Chronicles (Amazon Instant Video) I ordered this primarily because the trailer looked interesting and I like Ron Perlman. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Supposedly, if you had an infinite number of monkeys sat in front oftypewriters, and an infinite amount of time, the monkeys wouldeventually bash out the works of Shakespeare. Sadly, the makers of thismovie didn't have an infinite number of monkeys. They had two monkeys, both of them slightly brain damaged, and instead of an infinite amountof time they had a couple of hours to work up a script. MutantChronicles is the result, but don't think too badly of them. They'reonly monkeys, and they were doing their best.In all seriousness, though, why are video game adaptations nearlyalways like this? Millions spent on special effects, clearly enough onsalaries for a few good actors to sign on - and written and directed bygibbons. The script for this one isn't really, really bad, justunbelievably bland - the characters have no character, they speak inclichés or hand out flipping great wodges of exposition, and the plotis strictly by the numbers. You've seen it a hundred times before, andit wasn't great those times, either. The director can barely frame ashot, and the whole thing drags, drags, drags, until 108 minutes feelslike decades. When the movie was over, I half expected to look outsideand see rocket ships flying past, but I guess it just felt that long. And just for fun, we've got some thuddingly obvious politicalcommentary, a First World War battlefield in a movie set 700 years inthe future, and at least 50 people getting stabbed through the head. That's no exaggeration, either - this director doesn't know much, buthe knows that he loves him some head-stabbin'.That probably all makes the movie sound more entertaining than itreally is. It's really just boring and dumb, but there is someentertainment value in watching a vastly over-qualified cast trying tomake the best of the horrible movie they've found themselves in. RonPerlman goes with a truly awful accent which even the Lucky Charmsleprechaun might think was a bit silly; John Malkovich makes no effortwhatsoever, and mumbles his lines as though barely staying awake, whileThomas Jane mostly just looks depressed. Best of the bunch, though, isthe permanently furious and confused look on Devon Aoki's face. 'I wasin Sin City!' that look says. 'How did I end up in this piece of crap?'Maybe she ought to ask the monkeys.
This movie is chock full of sci-fi action cheese, but it's OK becauseit ain't so bad. This movie is basically ripped visually from a bunchof different video games, and the end result is something quiteinnovative. Basically imagine a future (700 years to be exact) whereconstant fighting has reduced war to endless WWI style battles foughtwith no mechanization because there are little resources left. Overallthis movie has a very steam-punk feel to it.Visually this movie is more often than not stunning, with EXCELLENT CGIthroughout. The life action effects on the other hand woefully showthis movie's obviously low budget. Then kicks in the sci-fi cheese story; alien mutant maker machineuncovered in a battle, yada, yada, yada, and you get to hear Tom Janewhip out some hilarious one liners as well as watch his stereotypicallyWWII faction styled partners and Ron Pearlman do some serious slicingand dicing. The story is somewhat simplistic but mildly clever at points, and themovie is paced well with action pretty much not stopping throughout formore than a few painfully terrible scenes. The best thing about thismovie is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I found myselfchuckling at a few points both at jokes within the movie and the partsof sheer cheeze. Basically if you like video games, mindless sci-fiviolence, or decent but painfully low budget B no-brain action flicksthen you'll like this movie.
Feel free to skip this one. The plot really didn't make sense and the acting was pretty lame. Even the fight scenes and mutants weren't that compelling. Never read the comic so maybe I am missing something. But a crappy movie is still a crappy movie. Basically as waste of time and money. Ugh! One bright spot - Amazon is finally streaming HD content - hooray!
The storyline is okay, but the action is really what this movie is allabout. The scenes when they go underground can get repetitive, andsomewhat confusing. It does drag a little bit underground. There is action in betweenthough, along with some stuff that would never happen (I know itsaction/fantasy) but it took me out of the movie a few times, thinking"oh really, that just happened..".The dark scenes were way too dark with the copy I have, but I think themovie is made to be darkish, kind of like the Angelina Jolie moviecaptain of something, can't remember.Anyway, it's got a lot of violence, gore and shooting. Cool lookingmutants, bombs, etc. For an action movie, not bad, but could have beenway better.
