The Mentalist - Season Four

After a serial killer named Red John murdered Patrick Janes wife and daughter, Jane dedicated his life to hunting down and killing Red John. To that end he gave up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and joined the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a consultant to the team responsible for investigating the Red John case, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. Using Janes exceptional gift for observation and his mentalist tricks, the team is able to close an unprecedented number of cases, but Janes unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbons head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse. Meanwhile, the hunt for Red John continues...

A Psych fan's evaluation of "The Mentalist"

I love Psych. I think James Roday and Dule Hill are a great buddy comboand characters like Lassiter and the adorable Maggie Lawson really helpmake the show what it is. With that said, I understand how thisentertainment industry works. If a comedy or drama has a great enoughidea, the other genre will do the same. Sopranos could have been easilydismissed by "Analyze THIS" fans (Mob boss see's a shrink). The Mentalist is obviously using the idea originated(chronologically)by Psych. A "psychic" helps out law enforcement to solve crimes. Let'stalk about the potential of the Mentalist and all the bases theycovered so far.We learn in the pilot that the mentalist's child and wife were murderedby a serial killer they never caught. So far, this only makes him morededicated to catch killers and be honest about his talents. It couldget bad.We also learn he doesn't believe in an after life, and by extension canassume he's a bit skeptical about spirituality and religion. This mightbe a much bigger problem if they didn't throw in the tokenChristian/believer. A female rookie(or just young agent) challenges theMentalist's skeptical views of the afterlife and cements her place asthe religious type there to always challenge skepticism aboutspirituality and psychics.I admit I'm intrigued by the serial killer side story. I'll probablykeep watching this show until the point where we could learn that theMentalist is only a skeptic because his family was brutally murdered, acliché in entertainment as old as letter-writing campaigns bybelievers. In reality, it is usually those people who find religion...not like "I Am Legend" where he's mad at God. Also, the Mentalistcharacter isn't a complete jerk like House M.D.The pilot episode of this show gets a solid 7. This show has thepotential to be a great drama.Psych.(just kidding)

Great Start For THE MENTALIST

Okay, first let's get this out of the way, shall we? I've already heardthe naysayers griping about how this is a blatant rip-off of USA'sseries PSYCH. And you know what I think? I think that's an insult...toTHE MENTALIST. I have seen at least one episode of PSYCH, and I haveone question...WHY would you defend that show? It's horrible! I gave itone chance to impress me, especially since the episode I saw featuredone of my favorite actors, Tim Curry, as a special guest star. I don'tknow who I was more embarrassed for - poor Tim for choosing to makethat appearance, or for myself having to watch him slog through it.But enough about PSYCH...please. THE MENTALIST is the brainchild ofcreator/writer Bruno Heller, whom you might remember had something todo with a modest little HBO series called ROME. Well, Heller's knackfor great writing shines through here, with an opening scene in thepilot that will leave you open-mouthed with disbelief! Very few showswill catch your attention the way this one did and I loved it. I onlyhad one gripe...the casting. Should Stephen Culp and Zeljko Ivanek (whoappears later) really be playing any more villains? Please...let's getsome people in here whose very presences don't give the surprises away!Aside from that, it's a great introduction to the super-observantPatrick Jane (THE GUARDIAN'S Simon Baker), a 'consultant' to thepolice's Special Crimes division who once made his name as one of those"John Edward"-type TV psychics. But that was before he managed, in hisarrogance, to get the attention of a serial murderer known only as "RedJohn", whose grisly crime-scene trademark is a smiley face painted onthe wall in his victims' blood. When Jane calls John out on nationaltelevision...well, if you guessed that one of those smiley faces endedup at Jane's house where his wife and daughter were, you get the prize!I never watched THE GUARDIAN, though I am familiar with Simon Bakerfrom other things and I do like him. Plus he has great chemistry withRobin Tunney, who plays investigator Teresa Lisbon. And it's nice tosee Owain Yeoman from the unfairly canceled THE NINE (and most recentlyfrom TERMINATOR as the "first" incarnation of Cromartie) in anotherseries - one that will hopefully last for more than a single season!THE MENTALIST does come across as a blend of PSYCH-meets-COLUMBO, butwith a more conventionally handsome lead than Peter Falk, and muchbetter writing than PSYCH. Now that we know what drives the clever andtormented Mr. Jane, I hope we're treated in between other cases to hisongoing dust-up with the elusive "Red John."

mentalist copy copy copy

This show is s complete rip off of a cross between "usa's" monk andpsych its not funny, copy copy copy . Look wee cant come up with newideas so lets copy someone else. pathetic!!! Like surviver big brotherand all those other reality shows who copied. When will we ever learn, its like TNT/tbs saying the closer is the best drama on TV after oneyear ever. How do they Gage that? Or a station saying its a world TVpremiere when its been on 5 times??? Or cable subscribers who pay a feeand 28% of the channels are paid programming. I don't know about youbut now that cable has a monopoly, you pay more and get less. Hell Ican't even get the new my TV network yet....

A Touch of Genius

The Mentalist is a detective crime show, although very unoriginalconsidering the amount of shows of the genre on TV at the moment, theMentalist is original to the fact that it involves many in-depthpsychological aspects. Before I delve into the shows Pros, I'm going tostart off with the cons. First of all, as my title states, the show is 'A Touch of Genius', andmaybe too much in fact for the series to gain casual viewers. In orderto understand the show completely, one must concentrate really hard onevery single component of the show, and not only on the psychologicalaspects. For example, if a character is chewing nicotine gum, then thatshould be taken into account for the rest of the show as it may be animportant clue to uncover the mystery of the crime. With that said, theseries seems very scripted, as every single action does not fall undernormal human instincts, but just another jigsaw to complete the puzzle. Another flaw within the show is that the Mentalist is portrayed as the'perfect' character, capable of doing almost everything singlehandedly, which undermines the good supporting work of the rest of thecast. Rather than the Mentalist (Simon Baker) being an expert inpsychological issues, he is also an expert in everything else, such ascrime scene investigation and so forth. The hypnosis aspect of theseries is also a flaw, as it is performed too many times and althoughbelievable, it brings amongst itself many sceptics as well as criticsof the idea (as well as boost the idea that the Mentalist is a perfectcharacter). Now onto the pros: simply put, the Mentalist is full of ideas andconcepts that makes the mind think, and whilst watching the show, Ifound myself completely engrossed in each investigation and incapableof taking my eyes off the screen as to not miss anything. To watch theshow, one must focus a lot of concentration into it which makes theviewer feel really involved. The acting itself is very 'feel good' andcredit to Simon Baker for his performance on that area. Even in adepressing scene, Simon Baker can manage to put a smile on the viewer, making it a very 'feel good' sort of series. The psychological aspectsof the show is brilliant as well, as I find many of them verybelievable and true to human psychology. And as I indicated earlier ofthe flaw that Simon Baker seems to be the 'perfect' character of theseries, it is often brilliant to see him 'outplayed' by othercharacters in individual episodes as it is a rare occasion, and when itdoes happen it is a great scene to be remembered (and so a flaw isdeveloped into a positive). In conclusion, the show is very clever in its line of work, and oftenvery amusing and 'feel good' but don't expect to become a fan of theshow if you're just aiming to watch it casually. It's possible peoplemay like it from watching casually, but its unlikely. One question that may pop into your head maybe: Why choose Mentalistother from all the other detective crime shows out there? Well afterwatching the first series, the show seems to show a lot of promise andpotential, and its scenes very interesting (even giving ideas to how tobecome a Mentalist yourself). The plot is basic, but I have yet to findanother crime show which delivers individual scenes with as muchexpertise as this show. The Mentalist is currently one of my favourite TV series.

excellent show doesn't disappoint

This show has been really really good from the onset, Patrick Jane'scharacter is likable and sometimes kind of funny to watch. There hasbeen some parts that made me smile and some that shocked me, a goodcombination to keep this show going. Robin Tunney who I rate as a greatactor has found herself a really good part that showcases her talents, her attitude towards Jane's methods of cracking the case make me smilebut ultimately you see how she respects him at the end of the episode.I seriously cannot wait to see if and how they catch Red John. I alsowonder what the second series will hold and if Red John reappears orsomeone else takes over the mantle this time with more seriousconsequences. Keep it up Simon Baker, your onto a winner with thisshow.

Show lacks enough chemistry to be enticing, despite intriguing concept

One-time con man turned police "profiler"(the title is a more accuratedescript)Patrick Jane(Simon Baker, attractive Australian actor, returningto American TV some years after "The Guardian")is an ace at noticingALL elements of human behavior. His droll wit and sharper than sharpinstincts are both annoying and yet highly necessary for the policeforce of a California(?)beach community, and he's a particularbane/potential-love-match Det.Teresa Lisbon(Robin Tunney, alithe, wondrous beauty whose lack of facial expressions puts a severedent into her presence on the show),who is at once both a skepticalfoil and supportive advocate of Mr.Jane's presence on the force. Thus, the nutshell descritpion of ":The Mentalist",described by some asa variation on,among other shows,USA's "Psyche". Though I cannot claimexpertise on "Psych",what I DO know about it and what I've seen inabout five or so eps of this program, gives me the impression that whileboth shows are going for tongue-in-cheek crime drama solving, theycleave pretty dramatically on style, interpersonal dynamics and(mostnoticeably)tone. What I've seen of "Psych"(much of which,i'llconfess, comes from the ads)has impressed me with a comedic timing andgive-and-take quality that "Mentalist" just flat seems to lack. Bakeris handsome and charismatic, showing a lot of ease in the role, butpractically the entire rest of the cast seems to have one, maybe twonotes at best:caustic skepticism, with a small touch of reluctant awe.if it were just for Baker alone, this show would be perfectly fine, butit seems like the interplay with practically everyone else is soflat--coupled with the stock labyrinthine murder cases--that itreally,to me,lacks enticement to stay loyal.I will allow that this show, still in a relative nascent stage ofrun, may need time to crystallize in the department for which I justcriticized, but many shows plain simply DON'T get the chance to do justthat. It seems kind of strange(if not unfair)that this show, with goodpotential and intriguing albeit far-fetched premise, will get a longerrun than some to try and make this click. I may give this one anotherchance down the line, for that, but I'm not feeling too optimistic to behonest.

Terrible!

This T.V show is a complete rip-off of USA Networks Psych, only withmore added drama. I find it awfully boring and depressing to watch. Ithas unneeded flashbacks at random unimportant places in each rip-offepisode. Do not even bother to watch this, unless you want a reason tokill yourself. Simon Baker should not have agreed to do this rubbishshow. Do not watch this, and do not be fooled by the other idiot userswho decided to give this show an 8 out of 10. I believe the creators ofthis show should quit writing T.V shows and choose a different line ofwork which they are actually good at Try my favorite show Psychinstead.

Excellent TV Series with obvious flaws......

Simon Baker is the main character, and he is someone you either love orhate (or love to hate). Robin Tunney is great as the skeptical boss, &the supporting players are great (including Gregory Itzin from "24" asthe head of CBI (California Bureau of Investigation). However, I would like to point out some obvious GOOFS in this show, aswe live in Sacramento, CA (where the fictional show takes place):1) There is no such thing as CBI in California! We do not have a statepolice, but the California Highway Patrol (CHP, depicted in "Chips"), astate police agency that are basically glorified traffic cops whopatrol the freeways and arrest people for speeding tickets....California DOES NOT HAVE a detective agency based in Sacramento, although a small department of CHP are assigned to guard the StateCapitol & governor Arnold Schwartzenneger.2) The show supposedly takes place in Sacramento, but fails to use reallocation shots! Its basically a Hollywood-ized version of theCalifornia State Capitol. Some of the episodes use city names of nearbytowns and one episode was in the Napa Valley.3) One episode involved a murder in San Francisco (2 hours fromSacramento)....it made us laugh every time they were able to go fromthe CBI headquarters to the Crime Scene in only 5 minutes. (In a laterepisode, they mention that they have a Helicopter available---obviously inserted by the writers to "cover" their continuity gaffe!)4) Yet another episode took place in Davis, CA (a small town only 20miles from Sacramento). Yet the location shots were from SouthernCalifornia: News flash, the city of Davis does NOT have palm trees(palm trees would freeze dead in the Northern California winters). theDavis police department has only ONE part-time detective, yet the"Mentalist" made it look like they had a huge squad of detectives. (Asa former University of Davis CA student, having lived in the town ofDavis, it was very laughable!)I'm sure the folks who live in Miami scream out "CSI investigatorsdon't drive Hummers" and the Vegas residents probably howl that "thereis nobody who looks like Helgenberger working in the LVPD."Hopefully, if the Mentalist makes it to a Second Season, they willcorrect some of the goofs and gaffes, and PLEASE do some real locationshots in the Central Valley!

One of The best crime shows in Years

"The Mentalist" is one the best Detective shows if seen in years i putit up with "Crime scene Investigation" and a bit worse than "Law andorder" with "Patrick James" as our main protagonist who is a Played by"Simon Baker" who is a consultant for the CBI who uses Similar skillsas "Sherlock Holmes" to Solve his cases. The Supporting cast do give agood Performance not anything as good as "House Md" but they do give agood PerformanceNow onto the cases. The cases in The Mentalist are usually veryEnjoyable and they all make sense and you can usually guess who youthink it is and Most times will get it right. The problems with the show is that They make the CBI seem Kinda slow inthe case since Jane always gets it before them and they are Miles apartin know this is the Premise of the show but it does get annoying. The show is Probably one of the best Crime dramas right now and if youprefer things like Sherlock Holmes rather than Forensic science likeCSI Thats my First review so hope you enjoyed and could you please giveme feedback.

intelligent new show

The mentalist is no doubt not an original concept, and yes, it might besomehow related to Psych. The show does distinguish itself from Psychwith its new and unrelated material. The series literally takes you ona ride as one feels involved in the investigations with every episode. The haters of the show should ease up. This is good old detective work, which relies on careful crime scene observation and a bit of suspectmanipulation, as oppose to the science ridden crime dramas whichbombard our television sets every evening. No disrespect to C.S.I. Onemore thing that struck me, has anyone else noticed the number of 24alumni appearing on the show?? Up until episode 7, we have had 4alumni, Steve Culp, Xander Berkeley,Gregory Itzin and Leslie Hope. Iwonder who is coming up next........ Catch the show for its wit andfun, if not.....check it out to see if Jack Bauer shows up to help TheMentalist.....

Great show

I really like The Mentalist and hope that it stays around for a longtime. Oddly, I think it has an "X-Files" aspect to it in that you havetwo main characters with obvious sexual tension who are both battlingdemons from their pasts. Also, you have the underlying plot whichdrives the series and is revisited time to time intertwined with theone-shot episodes which really don't develop the plot as much. I lovethe multi-layered aspect of the show--you have this funny, easygoing,light-hearted surface level, but many darker aspects lurk beneath thesurface. It is a fresh take on the crime genre, and I definitely preferthe show over others such as CSI, which don't do as such to developcharacters and relationships within the show.

classy act!

I really love the show and it's characters. Jane is the soul of thisshow and Simon does the right justice to the character. When any of thecharacters reminds of him of the brutality that happened with hisfamily, the emotion he puts forward is awesome. He character is witty, sarcastic, funny and makes one glued to the seat. In season 3 whenconfronts Red John, you can notice the pain, agony in his face and thatI call "a wonderful act". Lisbon's character is an interesting one butmost often restricted to controlling her team. The chemistry betweenRigsby and Vanpelt is entertaining and nice. The Cho character isinteresting because he is cold, to the point and no non-sense guy. Iliked his character portrayal very much and you notice it gettingunleashed in on one of the episodes where he finds out reason for hisfriends death.Kudos, to Simon and Bruno Heller, for great presentation. 9/10.

This show is for people like myself

I am very interested in the sort of mental tricks that are shown onthis show. Not that I want to be the guy, I'm more interested in whythe human brain works the way it does, and so far the tricks he usesare well based in reality...as strange as they are.As much as I like crime dramas, there are so many of them on TV rightnow. I wish they could have exposed the psychology to viewers in adifferent format, but on the flip side, I can't suggest a betteralternative either for the moment. For choosing an over-used format Itake two ratings off a perfect 10. As the last reviewer suggested theplots will have to get strange to be new.In contrast to the last reviewer, I do like the lead character a lot, probably because I understand more why he does the things he does.Simon Baker does a great job of acting as a Mentalist, from whom is hedrawing his inspiration from? They must have a consultant helping theshow. If you want to understand the show better, you may be interested inDerren Brown - Tricks of the Mind videos.

simply amazing. a blissful television experience, no doubts about it.

I wish deeply that all television shows were this easy to watch.By that I mean, I don't cringe every episode of this television showexpecting the gaffs, downright silly lines, formulaic plots, andirritatingly predictable lines that haunt so many crime dramas of late. This show is entertaining, enjoyable, and a fun experience every singletime I tune it. The characters are witty, the actors and actressesright on cue, and everyone seems to be enjoying the experience ofworking on the show. I think perhaps the actresses could stand to eat alittle more--every so often the dizziness that accompanies extremehunger seems to mar their acting abilities. I would also very much liketo see more backstory on and development of the women on this show. Theepisode where Lisbon faked a perp into believing her entire departmentbelieved she was crazy was AMAZING. It was also my favorite episodethus far.I think the angle of using a fairly ordinary person's perspectivethrough which to approach the process of detective- and crime-workprovides a keen, fresh view into the criminal justice system. Jayne'sreactions to the ways in which the Bureau handles crime work are one ofmy favorite parts of the show. His clear awareness of the absurdity ofprotocol matches the view by which any ordinary person without yearsstudying to be a bureau investigator would approach theseinvestigations. He is right; procedurs ARE ridiculous. It's nice to beoffered the opportunity to laugh at that fact, rather than to swallowdown the annoyance of being forced to see through the eyes ofcharacters who buy every bit of the manual, who live and die by thatsame protocol that strikes Jayne as being so ridiculous.Of course, Jayne is not a "normal" man by any means, but he is anoutsider entering a complex world outside his normal purview. Thatfish-out-of-water effect is rarely carried off well, and even morerarely features a man rather than a woman designed so that others havesomeone to laugh at. This show thoroughly overturns typical plots andassumptions about what writing on television shows is allowed to do.Even more shockingly, it got POPULAR super fast. Thank God for that. It's also nice to see a man doing the oft-considered "feminine" work ofreading people's body language, breaking the rules, and turning a blindeye to the justice system in pursuit of ACTUAL justice. It is equallynice to see a woman being the enforcer of those same rules, doing herjob very effectively and without complaint, being respected by herpeers. She is professional, he is not, and the whole thing bothoverturns gender norms and plays off together quite nicely. The two leads play off each other miraculously well.I wouldn't want this one to be going away anytime soon. I'm going to gobuy more dvds so y'all will have even MORE reason not to cancel thisshow.I'm trying to think of something to criticize about this show. All Ican think of is that I want MORE of everything--more plot, morecharacter development, more scripts, more scenes, more money beingrerouted into this plucky show. That says it all right there.Watching is unfailingly an educational experience.

unfulfilled potential

I admit I didn't follow this show when it first aired. Now and then Iwatched bits of episodes when I came across them on TV, but the shownever held my interest for very long, because it seemed on the wholevery bland, and no different from the dozens of otherprocedural/detective shows featuring ahighly-intelligent-yet-quirky-and-unconventional lead character (yawn). It was only after the season ended, and I had exhausted all otherviewing possibilities, that I downloaded the first episode, just to seeif it might be more interesting when seen from the beginning. And,indeed, the first episode was great: it was well-written, and the"Red-John" back story was very compelling. It made me want to see more, and so I went on to watch the rest of the season, although I was oftendisappointed by the episodes that followed. The main problem is this: the ONLY thing that makes this show uniqueand compelling viewing is the Red John story. But this is onlythematized in three of the twenty-three episodes of the first season.Apart from those episodes, what you get is for the most part justanother detective show. The fact that this one features a 'mentalist'is only mildly interesting on its own. There are just too many similarshows around these days for that alone to sell it.That said, the Red John episodes were very good, and the occasionalglimpses into Patrick Jane's past always the highlight of the episode. What makes this character interesting is his darker side, thesuggestion that he is motivated by revenge and that, beneath his cool, controlled demeanor, he is more than slightly unhinged. Simon Bakeractually seems to be quite a good actor, capable of portraying someemotional depth and range. They should give him something more to dothan stand around casting coy smiles at his colleagues. For the second season, they need to darken the tone (it's way too"PG-13" for an adult target audience), focus much more on the Red Johnplot, and highlight Jane's dark obsession. If they continue in the samevein as the first season, I predict that viewers will dwindle as theyswitch to other, edgier shows, and the series will peter out and die bythe end of the second season. The show has great potential, but theyneed to take a few chances.

Dull

The acting is as sub-par as a high school rendition of Hamlet. The setsare mediocre and the score is absent throughout and when it is there itseems flat. I do not understand how this show gets good ratings. Thepremise of the show is so recycled I'm surprised that it is stillexistent. I do not know why CBS seems to think Americans want 25 CSIclones. The acting as I preciously stated is far below that of CSI asit is full of people who don't know what they are doing, and so clearlyare acting. their tears when they are supposed to be crying seem forcedand the main actors seem stiff and mediocre. I will always scratch myhead wondering how this show gets such high ratings. it frankly makesno sense to me.

The Mentalist is a hoot at times

I love this show. Simon Baker is Patrick Jane, a consultant to the CBI,California Bureau of Investigation, which is the state equivalent ofthe FBI. Jane's a former psychic who lost his wife and daughter to aserial killer who calls himself "Red Jack." Red Jack, according to thepilot, takes great sadistic pleasure in watching his victims watch himas he's killing them. Since the pilot, the shows have gotten better. The most recent, Carnelian Inc, was about a murder in a conglomerate.Jane always has a way to know who's lying and who's telling the truth. He called himself a psychic before the deaths of his wife and daughter. Then he went to work for the state of California. His boss is AgentTeresa Lisbon. The Mentalist is a hoot at times. You can't help butlaugh at the funny situations.

Imagine

Imagine there was a show out there that sucked. Rhymes with Psych. Ithas a good premise, but it sucked. The lead actor was channeling TomCruise, and wasn't much of the sharing type. Would you mind if someother show with better actors took the premise and actually didsomething with it? Of course not.OK, Simon Baker is not doing all that much sharing right now, but he'strying to show that he, the character, is also selfish. And just a bitof an egomaniac. If the show starts to go the way of 'The Closer', with its insistenceon having Kyra in every single possible scene, then you may feel freeto stop watching it. I do still watch and enjoy 'The Closer', but ithas more to do with the rest of the amazing cast. They do so much withso little screen time.Edit - 3 months laterOK. I don't watch the show anymore because the show is just about him,and how clever and wonderful and whimsical he is. The writers don'teven bother dealing with plot anymore. He isn't in every scene, butsomehow you can picture him somewhere off screen strolling among thedaisies, and always being the smartest one in the room.I do like character based shows, but even Monk wore thin after a fewseasons. Monk has such a successful formula that they seem afraid ofhaving any character development. I thought 'The Mentalist' could have been a good show. Whoever createdthe show is probably a big fan of Derren Brown. I have seen at least 4or 5 of his routines on the show. What a shame.

Psyche Rip Off Definitely.

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then Psyche should should bevery flattered today. There are small (very small) differences made tokeep the producers from getting sued but the idea is a rip off and theexecution is poor. The premise of a guy with a good memory for detail?Fine so he's an ex-cop (isn't there one in Psyche too?) and the guy onPsytche isn't. Also this guy shows a prejudice streak about people thatcan only be found in the real world at the Republican NationalConvention. That's about all the most original part of the whole show. The casting of Simon Baker shows only an airhead looking actor can playthis part. The smirk he wears the whole time is directed at theaudience for believing this is a new original idea. Instead of watchingthis trash, rent the first season of Psyche on DVD or read a good book. And don't let Simon Baker know the name of the book or he'll find anoverblown stereotype that you'll fit in.
