Delightful poem to passion

I didn't know the writing credits were on Neil Simon. And me and my wifesawthe movie enjoying every line of the text. We're great admirers ofMr.Simon, who created the leading style in good American comedies humour. TheMarryingMan is an invitation to find the right person in our lives. That personthatawakes our most passionate side, the one which worth to live. Okay, I'mbecoming a little dramatic, but my wife and I, we know (thanks God...andus)what true love can do with your life, for better! It's a great movie, plenty of meanings. Watch it twice!

Funny, but Long!

Jerry Rees's 'The Marrying Man' is one of those funny and spot-onflicks that have the potential to become classics, but they falter inthe most important portion of the film... it's culmination.'The Marrying Man' stars Alec Baldwin as a playboy, who is a 6 daysaway from his marriage... in a trip with friends, he falls in love withthe sultry Kim Basinger, who also has her share of problems andcomplications. The film has a terrific first hour, in fact you'rehooked into the screen completely! But the penultimate 40-minutes dragand become boring. The culmination is stupid and highly unconvincing. What disappoints more is that this flick is written by a genius likeNeil Simon! Moving on, Rees direction is fair. Acting wise, Robert Loggia isterrific in a brief role. He steals the show! Alec Baldwin is quitegood. Kim Basinger looks amazing, as ever! Her performance is perfect.Elisabeth Shue is okay. All the actors who play Alec's friends aremechanical.'The Marrying Man' deserves a watch. It has a superb first hour and thelovable Kim Basinger to it's kitty.

The marrying couple

Before they became now-divorced husband and wife in real life,Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger are an on-and-off married couple. More times then Robert Wagner and the late Natalie Wood. Charley Pearl(Baldwin),whose family manufactures Pearl Drops tooth polish(a real product),is a romantic swinger who falls in love with a lounge singer(Basinger). Charley is actually engaged to Adele Horner(Elisabeth Shue) whose father Lew(Robert Loggia) owns a movie studio. The Charley-Adele wedding has been called off after the 400+ sent invitations. However, the wedding was called off before Charley and the singer married for the first of five times. When the union made headlines,it angered Lew and brought tears to Adele. Lew is so pissed at Charley that Lew wants to kill Charley. Adele thought and hoped Charley would come back to her but no such luck. Charley and the singer ended buying and moving into Lew's home. Hey,do you think it's possible that Baldwin and Basinger will become husband and wife four more times in real life just like in this film? Wagner's and Wood's first marriage ended in divorce. They both remarried and divorced others, once respectively, before remarrying a second time. The second marriage ended in 1981 with Wood's drowning death.

Gets old too fast.

This started off as an enjoyable romantic comedy with Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin looking great together and it was fun, but by the second half the plot line gets really old soon and tired by then you just want the movie to be over soon. You cannot deny that Basinger has a very good singing voice.

Light-hearted and lots of fun.

See Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger on screen together for the first time in a comical and heart-warming rendition of the classic boy-meets-girl story - with an enormous twist! The plot is brilliantly funny and the supporting cast includes Paul Reiser. Kim and Alec are superb together - great actors. The Marrying Man is a definite Must See!

good DVD!

The quality of this DVD is good! The only disadvantage is that there are only English and Franch caption for selection. Anyway, I am still satisfied with this product. Thank you!

It's simply an honest movie

Whether you'd admit it or not, I don't believe that anyone watched thismovie and didn't enjoy it. It talks to our basic instincts in a veryhonest way. I mean ain't we all looking for this undying passion? Youlook at them (Alec and Kim) in this movie and you can believe that thiskind of passion can be found but you need to be lucky enough to bemutual. For we all know that we sometimes meet people and have suchfeelings for them and they don't exchange it back or vice versa. The movie has so funny scenes and Baldwin is so funny as well. Kim isso charming and the whole movie would push you towards finding thiskind of coupling.

Chemistry!

This is the movie where Alec Balwin and Kim Baisinger fall in love, FORREAL! Their chemistry is potent and obvious... and they were marriedshortly after!Yes, it's very funny in places, a tribute to human emotional insanityunder the influence of love... and OH so true.Largely, to my mind, because of the REAL emotions between the maincharacters (they WEREN'T acting) it was fantastic. Alec is thequintessential male victim of love - totally illogical and totallydevoted to the female who's totally seduced him. And she comes tobelieve a man willing to die for her is better than the meal ticketshe's got in the mob guy... to everyone's detriment.Watch it again, people, appreciating it's relation to actual history...

Underrated, Great Movie

This is probably one of the best romantic-comedy-drama movies I have everseen. Sure, 'My Best Friend's Wedding' was good, too, but 'The MarryingMan'was great without all of the publicity. Alec Baldwin gives a radiantperformance from slick, rich, toothpaste company heir that dates a youngElisabeth Shue to a slick, rich, toothpaste company heir that dates loungesinger (and future wife, both in the movie and outside) Kim Basinger to abum who marries the same lady four times, hence the title. At times, I didget a little bored, but after I watched it for the second time, I sawthingsI didn't see the first time. This movie is a hidden gem for the acquiredtaste. Although I wouldn't recommend it for little kids or people who getbored with movies during the first ten minutes, it was a really greatmovie.

We Got Married Again & Again & Again - Can Do!!!

There is love and there is hot, Charlie and Vicki had both, why is thisso amazing? A myriad of reasons, so let's attempt to make the necessarydetachment! Love is trust, mutual understanding, mutual respect andspiritual growth. Sex is fantasy, illusion, degrading escapism and someother kind of growth (guess what?). The film "Marrying Man" delves intothe painstaking dichotomy of what a marriage should be, and what menreally want out of it. The creative itemization to this movie ismarvelous! All of the circumstances in this movie make love and hot theovert culprits to virtually all of Charlie's (Alek Baldwin) problems. The genre of this film evokes a tremendous wealth of humor which isbased on the fact that a nefariously candid handful of guys areafflicted by their relentlessly sordid human nature! The entire movieappealed to me: Taking place in the fifties, the events of this eraaccommodated an auspicious camaraderie with the cavalier demeanor ofthis film! This movie was full of mildly lewd behavior which reflectedthe naivety of the times! Another stellar aspect to this flick was, ofcourse, the given factual detail that Kim Bassinger looked utterlygorgeous!!. Neil Simon directs this movie, and, it surprises me how MrEgalitarian Liberal of the Seventies, (Neil Simon) can be so flippantabout this film's insinuated sexist wiles of chicanery, kidding orotherwise!! The music accommodated the pace of this film, and theacting was incredibly believable. People might say, "You are suppose totake a driver's license test four times if you have to, you are notsuppose to marry the same woman four times". To which I say, "Marryingthe same woman four times, "Can Do!!"

REALLY didn't like this film

This film is proof that by just combining two of my favorite stars withthewriting of Neil Simon, is not necessarily a guarantee of success. Iunderstand that this is a comedy and the actions of the characters may beexaggerated for comic purposes. The problem is that even though thecharacters actions made no sense through the movie, it wasn't funny. Ihonestly found myself disliking Alec's character. Sorry everyone. I wouldrather watch Alec and Kim in The Getaway(1994) which I thought was a lotbetter than the 1972 original.

Great Hollywood tale! Funny and erotic!

'The Marrying Man' is one of the most underrated Kim Basinger-movie ofthem all. I have to admit that it's one of my favorite ones. I'm not aperson of romantic comedies, but if there's a real beauty goddess in it(like Kim) who makes the whole plot sexier it's really worth to see it.The film is a typical classic-type Hollywood-movie with the sweaty plotof an operetta. The acting is great, the pictures are so colorful andKim shines like Rita Hayworth in 'Gilda' when she sings the hit songsof Cole Porter and co. Those people who thinks that these kinds ofmovies are silly have to understand that people of this world needsthese nice tales. It's a very professional kind of entertaining withglamorous stars. Kim is a great singer! 'Let's Do It-Let's Fall inLove'...with her.

"... and they never divorced ever again!"

Marrying Man brings to the screen the story of a young and wealthy [...] playboy who has finally met the woman he wants to marry and settle down with. Things get a bit complicated when six days before the wedding he goes to Las Vegas with his buddies only to stumble upon the woman of his dreams...Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger carry out their performances very well, though the supporting cast members could have been a little better. The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all wonderful! As for the rating, it should have been PG-13. Why was it rated R???In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

Acapulqueno 2013-05-01 07:34:43

skip it

A very rich toothpaste heir playboy (Baldwin) lets raging testosteronemake all of his major decisions, which results in tiresomelypredictable but never really fatal results. The object of most of hisaffection is a Las Vegas cabaret singer who is the girlfriend of BugsySiegel (Armand Assante in a too-brief appearance). Kim Bassinger does alot of singing and even more shimmying, but that's about all shecontributes to a script which consists mostly of a tiresome series ofnot very funny one-liners. Don't be misled by the Neil Simon credit.Simon has done far better plays, and should have known enough to burnthe script of this disaster before letting anyone film it.

Fun to watch

This review is from: Marrying Man, The [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I'm not a fan of either Basinger or Baldwin, but I still enjoy watching this movie quite a bit. It's occasionally goofy, but quite fun.

An Excellent Movie

I love this movie, especially the ending when they get married for the I think it was the fourth and final time, makes you wonder why the kept getting divorced when all they did was get re-married. This movie is definetly a must see and must have. You could really see the chemistry between alec and kim in this movie. They are so good together. I hope they get back together in real life, they have true love.

A sparkling comedy

Based on a true story, The Marrying Man tells the story of Charlie Pearl (Baldwin) and Vicki Anderson (Basinger), he a rich playboy, she a Vegas lounge singer and girlfriend of gangster Bugsy Siegel. They love, fight, marry. Four times. Funny one-liners, great cast, fantastic songs and an authentic recreation of the glamorous late 1940's, early 1950's era are all propelled by real life husband and wife team Baldwin and Basinger's brilliant screen chemistry. The couple fell in love on the set- and it shows. Their portrayal of a couple whose sizzling heat fuels a love-hate relationship which takes over and nearly destroys their lives is backed up and given light relief by the perfectly chosen comedic supporting cast. Fisher Stevens and Paul Reiser feature as some of Charlie's struggling Hollywood friends, Reiser giving a wry narrative throughout which aids in the films continuity and light tone. Armand Assante, as Bugsy Siegel with an ironic sense of humor, delivers a refreshing and different slant on the usual movie gangsters. Robert Logia is fantastic and funny as the aggressive and egotistical movie studio owner and Elisabeth Shue is terrific as his neurotic and spoiled daughter, engaged to Charlie, but who is no match for sexy songstress Vicki. Basinger who did all of her own singing, gives a knock-out performance as the talented and ambitious singer. Her delivery- sexy, suggestive, vibrant- is perfect. In a sleazy Vegas casino, Charlie and his friends' first sight of her back-lit, curvy figure and the sound of her throbbing voice causes the stuttered and dazed reaction of: "she has great ....... phrasing" to which Reiser's character replies, "Oh yeah, the first thing I noticed when we walked in here was her phrasing". The cast, atmosphere and the on-screen heat with her leading man all make the film an enjoyable whole. But it is Basinger's transformation of Vicki's whole persona and performing style, from initially ambitious, brassy and slightly trashy, to sophisticated, worldly, and mellow in a perfectly honed performance that really helps make the film memorable.

THE MARRYING MAN { BLU-RAY ]

This review is from: Marrying Man, The [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I had never heard of this movie & some how found it on Amazon & read some reviews & figured what the heck, for less than $5.00 I can get Kim Basinger in blu-ray. She is so nice to look at. It's a fun movie to watch, if you like Kim, or for you ladies, Alec. I can't compare it to the dvd quality as I have never seen it in this format, but the blu-ray is pretty nice & the price is right too. I say if you like Kim or Alec go ahead & get this. You will probably like it too. I can't believe how really good Kim sang either. Really unexpectedly nice. Did I mention how NICE Kim looked !!!!!!!
