The Ledge

A thriller in which a battle of philosophies between a fundamentalist Christian and an atheist escalates into a lethal battle of wills. Ultimately, as a test of faith, or lack of it, the believer forces the non-believer onto the ledge of a tall building. He then has one hour to make a choice between his own life and someone elses. Without faith in an afterlife, will he be capable of such a sacrifice?

3 out of 4 actors are great, but it only takes one to kill it completely

This movie almost was worth the time. 3 out of 4 actors.... amazingdeliveries. But put one bad actor in the mix, and your film goes bustand straight to DVD. Yes, Charlie Hunnam, I'm talking about you! Worstperformance ever! I was actually going to start catching up on Sons ofAnachy, but I think I'll strongly reconsider. If you can grit yourteeth and look past his god awful acting, then you will enjoy the filmfor what it is. Your killing Patrick Wilson's chance of ever making itover this plateau in the industry that he has been on for 4 years. But,on the plus side, you get to see Liv Tyler boob. Yeah, just one. Wherewas that in Empire Records Bia!

A great movie

I really like this movie. There wasn't a minute in this movie which wasboring. My girlfriend wanted to go to bed. Usually she goes if she istired. But this movie enchained her. We couldn't stop watching it. Thething is you want to know why this guy is standing on the roof and whyhe intends to jump down to die.The way the movie tells the story is well done. Great actors, greatdiscussions about believing in god or not, surprising darker depths ofthe human soul, nice Love Story are the elements that make this movieworth seeing. Sometimes the movie is a bit philosophic but that's goodand interesting. This movie asks questions like "Do you believe in god?", "Do you becomea better human being if you believe in god?", "Are you really happy?"or "What would you do for love?".The only thing I could say now is that I absolutely advise you to watchthis movie if you like this stuff I described.

A true love story

This review is from: The Ledge (Theatrical Rental) (Amazon Instant Video) I expected this thriller to be a lot different. It was edge of your seat entertainment with real characters that anyone could relate to. In the end it was a great love story.

good performance by all

Liv Tyler surprised me in this film because her role was so underratedthat it bordered on excellence. Her character is prim that masks a pastand her sex appeal well she didn't have to try. Patrick Wilson wasbrilliant as the toothy Christian with a cult leaders smile of malice, but I loved how CHARLIE HUNNAM played his character with a sort ofgreat balance between bastard and gentleman, his interaction with allthe cast is very good and shows just enough dignity, crassness, andselfishness to round out his performance. Now even though I like TERENCEHOWARD I consider him the weakest link there was something empty abouthis performance that only came about when he interacted with HUNNAM.Its quite refreshing to watch a movie that simplifies subject mattersin a frank way.

Excellent Movie!

Well, this is a fantastic portrayal about how religious people are adanger to society. It doesn't take only to crash planes into buildings, but people of everyday life to destroy others lifes. It depictsperfectly how this mental illness called "faith" can lead anybody to doanything and believe is justified by carefully selecting which passagesof that book called "bible" will support they own destructive ideas. This time the Christian guy decides he is an 'old testament' guy.Despite the supposed message of love from Horus 2.0 (best known asJesus), he picked some lines from the old testament to justify thekilling and the suffering of others who have a different point of view.

Complex and heart-wrenching

I've just seen this film tonight at the Sundance Film Festival. It wasthe first film on my Sundance list because I had a chance to meet ChrisGorham at another screening a few months ago, and he's been talkingabout it.I was concerned, however, as I started seeing very mixed reviews. As Iwalked in I was prepared to be bored, preached at, and left with a verypredictable life-affirming message. Boy, was I ever wrong.Let's start with the talent. Gavin, Charlie Hunnam looking like a crossbetween a young Ryan O'Neal and the late Heath Ledger (complete withfake American accent), eats up most of the screen time, and he'sneither hero (a man who falls in love) nor villain (a man who destroysa marriage). That's a sign of a complex character, because real life isseldom black or white. You like him enough, though, not to want him todie. Terrence Howard is predictably good though his character is alittle flat compared to the others, Liv Tyler -- who I've never been afan of before -- turned in a fantastic multi-dimensional performance.Christopher Gorham, as Gavin's roommate, makes a fine showing as well, despite there being very little of it. (Any more of Chris's story wouldhave seemed a forced, unnecessary subplot.) The standout performance, Ithought, came from Patrick Wilson as Tyler's Christian fundamentalisthusband. For the first half hour I was distracted by the fact that he'sa Will Arnett doppelganger, but by the end of the movie he's becomefrighteningly snakelike. You expect the Christian extremist to be the bad guy, the evil one. Butthat's not what happens. Of course he's the bad guy, and yes, he's gotviews that many people won't agree with, but, through the good writingand his performance, I admired his passion, and even though I didn'tagree with his rigid views, I felt his incredible pain as he discovershis wife's infidelity. Some of the folks I was with considered hischaracter over the top, and it is definitely extreme complete withprofuse sweating, but you don't really know what direction he's goingto turn next, and that's an interesting villain. By the end of themovie my sympathy for him was gone, but I like the fact that he hadenough layers that I could feel his pain and hate him at the same time. The movie certainly made me think, there's a lot of religious andphilosophical discussion, but more impact was made by all the pureemotion going on. In case you might think it too cerebral, there wasplenty of tension along the way. Like every other scene in the movie,as Gavin stands on the ledge you have no idea which way it might go. Inthe end, Gavin makes a choice, one life over another, that he facedyears before, and this time he makes the "right" choice, at least inhis heart. It is not a story about an atheist versus a Christian, anymore than it is really a story about a guy standing on a ledge. Andlet's not leave out some of the lovely scenes between Tyler & Hunnam astheir relationship grows. The film, told mostly in flashback, is quitethe emotional roller coaster until it rolls clean off the tracks.I'm looking forward to seeing it play on IFC so I can appreciate thenuances a little more without being too concerned about the outcome.Matthew Chapman definitely has a lot to say (as he did at the post-filmQ&A), and I'm eager to see his next move.

Great Film

Excellent film, that actually give the VAST Atheist people avoice, instead of the usual Hollywood,Christan guff. Very well acted.Thought provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable film. Many thanks. Best filmI have seen in a long,LONG time. ;) What a refreshing change it is tohave the Atheist character have all the winning lines. Loved it. Iactually applauded at the end,and was pleased to say,I was not alone. Please do more like this. For far too long the religious type of filmhas gone unchallenged. ;)Liv Tyler is such a great actress, and she wason top form in this. Plaudits all round for those involved, and I lookforward to seeing more films of this nature.

About Time

This is a thoughtful movie examining issues of faith, belief, and commitment. Although it attempts to show various sides of these issues, it clearly comes down on the side of atheism but it shouldn't be a put off to the faithful. A film of ideas and intelligence, it dares to challenge views held by many. It's about time.

A few rough spots

First, "Just a Comment" incorrectly states the premise of the movie about the guy jumping and knowing about an afterlife. The jumping guy is an atheist who has been given a choice of jumping or having someone he cares about shot to death. He is not comforted by an afterlife buddy. And you shouldn't write a review if you haven't seen the movie. The guy on the ledge should've been a bit more harried in my opinion and more about the cops situation should've balanced with the jumper's situation in the flashbacks. Also, there were a couple of slow places for me.Overall it was an entertaining movie that is certain to cause evangelicals to have a conniption fit.

It's been a long time ...

It's been a long time since I've seen a movie that I really liked. A movie that had a story that was captivating and edgy.A few external sets: a ledge and a open window, a river walk, a few store fronts.A few interior sets: Hotel office, two apartments, a few hotel rooms, a house... pretty bare and basic when it comes to locations folks. This movie doesn't need special effects or fancy locations to mesmorize the audience. The story and the acting push it over the top.Life's not fair, at least in this movie and I'm guessing that a lot of people were surprised at the ending. It's a time old story of passion and unrequited love that's been told before, but not quite like this. All I can say was I felt wonderfully drained by it. The characters were three dimensional, it was good to see Liv Tyler in a move again. The cast was great. For me this was a true winner!

An excellent movie, rated badly because of the exact kind of christians that are in it. WATCH IT!

An amazing film, that gets you right from the beginning, having a standagainst religious fundamentalism. People (mostly of the religious kind)had voted it as 1 out of 10 because of ridiculous reasons (i.e. badacting, disturbing arguments etc). In reality, the acting is veryamazing, the actors got right into the skin of the roles. The atheist, the Christian and the woman caught in between are depicted very well bythe cast and you start sympathizing and hating accordingly right fromthe beginning, which is more than enough that can be said about acting. The plot is predictable, but it's not the point of this film. The pointof the film is too make you realize that what goes on between atheismand religious fundamentalism in the world is not far from the pictureplayed out in the movie. The ending is very emotional, although not theway I'd be doing it if it was me, but then again, it's not me.Although, it does leave you with a good sense as the Catholic detectiveis touched by the events and moves away from standard religion, whichperhaps symbolizes what the director had in mind for the viewers'feelings when they watched this.An excellent drama, with over-the-top acting, exciting ideas and aphilosophy that will get you thinking for, possibly, the rest of yourlife. Please vote without bigotry for this film to eliminate religiousfundamendalists from ruining this for other people who have no ideawhat this is about!

Wow, lots to think about here.

I just saw this movie tonight and really enjoyed it. The plot isgripping, full of pathos, and well executed. I thought the acting wasexcellent and the dialogue thought provoking. Charlie Hunnam and LivTyler delivered outstanding performances. I felt like I've met allthese people in other guise in my life, and they were all very human.Unlike most modern cinema, rather than skirting the big issues ofphilosophy and meaning this movie tackles the hard questions head on.It was very refreshing to see how these ideas interacted with thecharacters and their motivations. I really don't want to give it away.Go see it, make your own decision.

Significant, controversial

This film is sure to get bashed by evangelicals and most certainly, there will be many criticisms from moderates and the like as well. None the less, I hope the film will reach the Midwest, so that it might raise act as a consciousness-raising film.A most essential component of this film is that of the character’s beliefs (or lack-of) and in their choices; each the characters seem to posse a mix of good and bad choices [some worst than others!]. The main characters seem to rely are their worldviews, and one of those worldviews turns out to not be very healthy! This is where one (there are several) of the controversies lie; an atheist (Gavin) is the moral superior (although not in every regard!) to the antagonist~ the born-again, evangelical Christian Husband (Joe).

Excellent, thought provoking film

One of the best films I've seen in a long time. I judge a film by ifI'd sit through it again, and I would definitely see this again tocatch the finer nuances. Everything in the film was totally believable.I t was not the typical Hollywood formula. I felt empathy for all thecharacters, even the villain was 3 dimensional. No stereotypicalportrayals. I was engrossed right up to the end of the film. I was lostin thought for days afterward. I was surprised by the few bad reviews, and some of low star ratings. I'm sure the religious right behind thatare upset by this film, and rather watch the horrific beating andtorture in 'The Passion."

Liv clueless

Great film but what shocks me most is how clueless Liv Tyler is aboutGavins reasons to be an atheist.Check out this interview and cringe about her statements. He clearly states that he was a believer in his youth but step by steprealized that there is no Tooth Fairy, no Santa Claus and last but notleast NO GOD.WHAT THE HELL is it so hard to understand that some people just growup?!Does it always have to be a catastrophic moment in life that lets you"lose" your faith. The Ledge

First of all, the Cast of characters were phenomenal. The movie did anexcellent job at challenging religion versus an alternative view of ahigher power. The dynamic between Patrick Wilson and Charlie Hunnamreally drew you into the conversation. Because, It was a conversationthat I have had many times with friends and family. Years ago, dialoglike this would never be allowed. This is what I love about independentfilm makers; they touch on topics that have been frowned upon in thepast. Also, I loved the passion in both Liv Tyler and Terrence Howardfaces. It was almost as if you could feel their pain and their loss.Great job...

rightwingisevil 2012-04-25 05:36:44

80% Meh.....20% Not Bad

"You have a very sexy mouth." OMG, this actress actually got theugliest mouth among actresses domestic and abroad. Like what the dialogin the movie, it would be a disaster to have a mouth like than eitherbiting off a beer bottle cap or carrying out a bedroom wife duty. Iwouldn't bet my sex life on that kind of woman in this movie, 'causeshe's so ugly and unattractive. The whole movie needs more patience to watch along only if you don'thave other choices when religion discussion occupied a most part of amovie, I'd prefer watching "The Man from Earth". Why we need suchpuritan crap with a scarlet A? The talk, the dialog about life, faith, belief, good heart, smiles, good neighbors, atheist, believer...in theend, it's just about lust, adultery, seduction and hard-on. Nothing todo with God, morality. The only good thing in this movie is the actor played the jumper. Thisguy is so talented, making the role he played as the real thing. Otherthan him, the whole movie is just too meh to watch.

Stunning, intelligent thriller about the dangers of heart vs. head!

It's not hard to put together a monster film. You throw one insane guytogether with a hero, and add a car chase. The Ledge is nothing likethis, and that's why it's so impressive. The main struggle is between a Christian with extreme beliefs, and anAtheist who just wants out. Uniquely, it's the only film I can think ofthat has an openly atheist hero and an A-list cast. And ironically, thefew people who have complained about this show exactly what the film istrying to portray: that some people are so intolerant of atheism thateven one movie among the thousands in history is too much for them.To me, the star of this film is Patrick Wilson, who plays thefundamentalist. Instead of becoming a monster, his portrayal linkscompletely normal passions like love and protection and revenge that wecan all identify with, but then takes it to the natural conclusion, egged on by his convictions that anything he decides to do must beblessed. Thus the central thesis of the film -- that belief can go too far -- isplayed out on a small stage. This is a drama of just 6 people, but theintricate explosions between them pull at the heartstrings far moreeffectively than a car chase in an action film would. We hear so muchabout the dangers of religion in big stories like 9-11, gay rights, andabortion rights. Here is a film about the dangerous of religion in theeveryday, the dramas so commonplace that everyone who watches can findsomething in their own lives to compare it with.Sure, I've never walked out onto The Ledge. But something about themasterful writing and acting in this film creates an authenticity thatis undeniable.Go ahead. Rant against atheism. Show us how intolerant you are. Violentwords and deeds are the response of someone backed into a corner, desperate not to lose it all, just like "Joe" is in this film.

90-minute straw man argument against religion

The acting was bad, the characters were stereotypical and cliché, andthe story was completely without subtlety. But the worst part is the message (also not very subtle). The movie is90 minute straw-man argument against Christianity/religion. Interwoveninto the plot are a stack of arguments against religion, withabsolutely no attempt to fairly represent the other side. On top ofthat, the atheist arguments are not even very well thought out, and inthe end the verdict seems to rest on the virtues (or lack thereof) ofthe characters representing both sides. The Christian antagonist ishypocritical, homophobic, and small-minded. The atheist protagonist isheroic and kind. Based on that, let's decide not to pray for our meal.It wouldn't be so bad if it ended in a way that highlighted the factthat people can do good things or bad things regardless ofphilosophical orientation. The best that we can do is respect beliefsthat are different from our own, and try to see what we have in commoninstead of what separates us. I enjoy fair-minded and respectfulphilosophical arguments, but this isn't even close.
