The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen !

Minor SpoilersThe League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a mixture of a film and what Imeanby that is I really don't know what to think of it. Should I think of itasa really cool film that has all of these characters together in one filmorshould I think of it as a silly film trying be the X-men? Sure SeanConneryis in it and it has several other cast members but I saw some problemssuchas Stuart Townsend as the immortal Dorian Gray. Was it just Me or did hejust not look like but also acted like Johnny Depp's character JackSparrowin Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl? Also anothersimilarity I noticed was when Dr. Henry Jekyll turned into Mr. Hyde Inoticed that the face of the CGI creation resembled Brian Thompson andThomas F. Wilson's character Biff in the alternate 1985 in Back to theFuture part II! I was very disappointed that M was the Phantom and thatthePhantom wasn't a legit character in the film I mean with that long hair, silver mask, and cane he had the potential to be one of the best villainsever in My opinion! The story is also a bit confusing. Most of the specialeffects were very good but I hate to say this but the super Hyde orwhateveryou want to call him near the end of the movie looked like a character ormonster from some kind of video game! I mean in My opinion it was reallybad. The movie has a lot of action and has lots of potential itself butsince it doesn't know if it wants to be a different kind of UniversalMonsters film or a X-men film I can't say what I really think ofit.Only recommended if you love Sean Connery and if you want to see lots offamous characters together in one movie then see The League ofExtraordinaryGentlemen!

Dreadful

Sean Connery is a fine actor, but was clearly playing this part for themoney. He has been less than selective in the past and has admittedtaking on some roles for the work rather than the art.We did not manage to sit through the whole movie. Overall the acting(or overacting) was embarrassing to watch. The actors waded through apoorly crafted script which did not exploit their talents and how onearth did they keep a straight face? We normally enjoy comic/fantasytype films and were looking forward to the fun and special effects, butthis film failed to deliver in all areas. The comic book/fantasy aspect should not be used as justification forabandoning plot and a decent script.Don't bother to watch this film it is a turkey.

This film is Extraordinary!

WOW!! "LXG" is one film I'm adding to the top of my "Best Films of 2003"list!This has to be the summer's 2003 smartest, most exhilarating actionattraction.Based on the comic books by Alan Moore who also did the graphic novel"FromHell". Mr. Moore delievered another interesting story that in years willstand aprt and on its own as soemthing very unique anddiffrent."LXG" was just a great, cool off beat film. In a summer of loser sequelsandblockbuster films that don't feel orginial, "LXG" delivered thegoods.Stephen Norrington understands comic books don't have to conform to humanlogic because they have their own logic, & with "LXG" he did just that.Instead of amkeing the audience fell like you were watchinn the action heplaced in the story. Director Norrington knows how to navigate a surecoursebetween classic Victorian mystery and camp entertainment spiked withliterary and movie in-jokesNot to mention "LXG" has great Cinematography, costumes and setstoo."LXG" worked on all levels and never missed a beat! Sean Connery wasperfectas the legendary adventurer Allan Quatermain. Mr. Connery showed onceagainwhat a great talent he is and he still has the magic to keep our eyesgluedto the screen. The one performance I loved the most was Peta Wilson as Mina Harker. Ms.Wilson rocked, and every single scean she was in she held yourattention. What I liked the most besides the interesting story line was that eachcharacter gets their own sequence in which we learn something about themindividually. Which enchanced the story & helped the characters take formbefore ours and step form the pages of classics books to becomehuman."The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" is old-fashioned, Saturday matineefun spotlighting larger-than-life heroes, a masked mystery villain, deadlyperils and scientific wonders.Another new "Cult Film" is born!

Fun action film

This is not a great film, but 'The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen' ispacked full of action. It's the type of film that you can go to thecinema to watch and get caught up in the action, fantasy, andadventure. The alliance and the cast of unusual characters in thisalliance help the story, and it has pretty much everything the fan offantasy-adventure or superhero films could ever want in a film. Therewere a few problems with this film, and I had trouble with some of therealism. For example, the Nautilus could never travel down the grandcanal in Venice because it is too large, and the Grand Canal in Veniceis really not very large, and it's got bridges across it. Despite thisproblem and similar ones, it's not a bad film. It's fun, and it wasworth a couple of hours and dollars to watch.

Great Fun

This movie is entertaining for all! And even the 5 and 7 year olds loved it. In fact, it is the all-new favorite in the family. I loved the way the plot intertwined all of these fictional characters we know and love from books and films. It bridges the gaps on the characters for a little at least from the time their original book/film stories ended to the time period of the film. Who hasn't wondered what happened to Mina or Tom Sawyer or Captain Nemo from the ending of their stories? How did the position of "M" start in Her Majesty's Secret Service from Ian Fleming? We've all put down a book or finished a movie and wished it could continue. Now to continue this story....please?

Ignore the papers.

This is a great movie. Full of suprises, you have to disregard all of thetrash the papers have been talking. Loosely based on the graphic novel, isan outstanding story left open for a sequel. Each character has his ownstory, and no part is "overcrowded".

Good, but too chaotic

I was initially intrigued by the idea of a sort of AP Literature "JusticeLeague". The idea is unique, and seeing Captain Nemo fight alongside Mr.Hyde was something. The film was just too clustered and chaotic a lot ofthetime. The graphic novel had a nice flow to it, with solid intros for eachcharacter and good chemistry within the team. With the addition of DorianGray and Tom Sawyer though, the movie never takes it's time with the storyor character introductions. The film goes wrong in thinking that all wewantto see is action and explosions, when really we want to see thesecharactersinteracting with one another. There is a scene when Allen QuartermainshowsTom Sawyer how to fire a rifle the British way. More scenes like thatshouldhave been added. But besides that, the film is good for escapist fun. Ialsoadmired the art direction. Some of the scenes are so close to the comicbooklook that they are breathtaking. It was good, but hopefully anotherinstallment will bring guidence to this misguided idea.

Lame-o

I had high hopes for this film and was very dissapointed. I looked hereatother comments to see if there would be anything my wife would have tocoverher eyes at (gore). Seeing none, I ordered it and quickly wanted my moneyback. As she said, they don't give anything about the characters, so whoreally cares if they die or not? And what's with Captain Nemo being aMexican? The movie went nowhere in a hurry. 3/10

LXG = C-R-A-P: Do not go to see this

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. I know I need to back up astatement of this magnitude, but if I wrote everything I hated about thismovie I would die typing. I'll stick to all the things wrong with TheNautilus. The ship is initially shown as about the size of an aircraftcarrier and somehow navigates the narrow Venice canals with their90-degreeturns and low bridges. One shot of the ship shows a person on the deckandthe height could be estimated at about 75 to 100 feet off the water. Italso has cruise missiles on board that are able to target a car that isalsoowned by Captain Nemo -- it gets better. The ship is able to travel veryfast and leave the people up on the deck with a light breeze on theirfacesinstead of gale force winds. It's powered by two tiny drill-lookingmechanisms that wouldn't work worth a crap (I'm a mechanical engineer andhave had classes in fluid dynamics - they could've used propellers atleastto make it believable). What rotates these drill engines? Why solarpanelsof course that can charge up according to the Capt. Solar panels cannotcharge or retain energy; they only collect energy. There are no redeemingqualities in this movie. I've read Ebert's review of this movie and it iscompletely accurate and in some ways too generous. I got in for freebecause my friend works at the theater and I was mad I wasted two hours ofmy life. The comic book might be great. Although I've never read it, ifyou like it don't spoil a good thing by going to see thismovie.

All over the place... but no place good

This movie never finds a purpose or direction. The whole idea behind the premise is to bring well known 19th centuryliterary figures together to save the world; and then feels it has tointroduce and explain who these well known figures are. If you know, inadvance, Allan Quatermain, Dorian Gray, Capt Nemo, Mina Murray Harker, andHenry Jekyll, they need no introduction. If you don't, you never learnenough about them in this movie to know them at all. Apparently, theestateof H.G. Wells, having been battered by last year's Time Machine, smelledanother disaster in the makings and declined to allow Hawley Griffin toappear so we get a thief named Skinner to fill his shoes. But if youdon'tknow who Griffin is, what difference does it really make? Tom Sawyer isthrown in as a complete anachronism, but who cares? The other charactersare somewhat age appropriate, but Twain's hero is way off the mark.Twainwrote Tom Sawyer in the 1870's, and set it in the 1850's when Tom isabout12 years old; meaning that by 1899, Sawyer should be in his 50's insteadofthe young man of 25 (give or take) that he is. But this is just one of azillion flaws of logic to be found here. Yes, I know it is a comic bookmovie, but if it is set on planet Earth, certain laws of nature andphysicshave to be observed.Much has already be written about the Nautilus Submarine, the size of theUSS Enterprise (aircraft carrier or starship, take your pick) speedingthrough the canals of Venice. This same vessel apparently also makes itsway up the Seine River to Paris with no one detecting it. And then itmusthave backed its way back down the river because with its length there isnowhere to turn around. Nemo's car speeds through the streets of Venice(which don't exist) and Quatermain stalks the villian through a Veniciancemetery after the film has whon us there is only water under the surfaceofVenice. Half the city is destroyed, but the crowd in St. Mark's Squareonlylooks mildly perturbed the party has been interupted. The Venice scenescould have not be any less believable on Venus. Maybe more so.In Mongolia (a set up for a thousand politically incorrect jokes!) wesee avillage that looks to maybe have supported a couple hundred people. Wearetold they have been kidnapped to work in a secret factory/laboratory thatnoone can get to (unless you count this ol' honkin' submarine going up yetanother river). And then we see that there are thousands of peopleworkingin said factory with no explanation where they come from. Our heroesrescuethe families being held hostage (about 25 people it seems) and when thefactory blows up it looks like half a dozen workers make their way outwithnowhere in particular to go.The actors try hard to make sense of this mess. They recite dialoguewithgreat earnestness (ah, the importance of being earnest!) and conviction.Connery looks sufficiently curmudgeonly because of eye brows that are bigenough to have a life of their own. His thick scottish brogue is alwaysadelight to listen to but not right for H. Rider Haggard's English hunter. The actors try to create tension where the script gives them none. Theystruggle to be characters where the script gives them no depth. Theylookat each other sideways, always "knowlingly" without letting us knowanything. They hint a relationships that never occur or happened outsidethe film and therefore mean nothing. And when all else fails, which itultimately does, blow something up!This could have been a fun movie. But the director seems to think thatbeing "important and impressive" is better than fun. Instead it is noneofthe above and is just big. And, like going to see the world's largestballof string, it just sorts of sits there and you wonder why anyone botheredtodo it in the first place. It is, as the Bard said, "A tale told by anidiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing..."

Absolutely Awful

My girlfriend and I rented this with the firm belief that no Sean Connerymovie could be that bad. I have managed to sit my way through Presidio andHighlander 2. This, however, made them look like The Godfather... We turned it off after 45 minutes. The effects were childlike, dialogueinane and banal and the acting was like watching a schoolplay. Also, the editing during some of the fight scenes made one nauseous. This amovie that I would only recommend to someone who was interested in becomingbulimic!Probably one of the worst movies that I have ever seen...

shurik-4 2012-05-06 09:24:37

Not bad at all.

This is not the greatest movie ever and I doubt it willever win any awards. However, I am amazed at the amountof whining in the reviews (and at a relatively low scorethat the movie got).It is absolutely worth watching. It is entertaining aslong as your expectations aren't high and you don't pickondetails. There are plenty of inconsistencies, but thisisa movie set based on a comic book in a parallel universe!Anything goes at that point...Action is a lot of fun. Dorian Gray is the best characterandmost fun to watch. Though captain Nemo and Mina the vampireare also cool. I've seen better performances by Sean Connery, but I can't say that this one was bad.In summary: Good action movie, just don't get your expectationstoo high. The plot is reasonable but contains plenty ofholes.

jack van zant 2012-05-06 18:47:59

um...

so another dark comic turned to be commercial.take a clue from the crow, you dont deviate and succession in a good filmand cult classic will happen.i dont who thought an audience would latch on to this.this film is indeed to fast paced, and needs to settle down, it doesntdivedeep enough into characters, for us to really care, except jekyll, which ipitied.but everyone else when their truth were put to the test, they just hadwittycomebacks. um... couldnt have that response, make em unique thats why theyhave been held high in literature for sooo long.they dont have the presence they should. each is unique! let em stand outina group.so the film is wasted. though i defended it until i saw it again, recentfilms do not give anything back, to viewer's full attention.

My two cents

I went into this movie knowing nothing about it. I never read the comicbook version. However, I did recognize several of the characters, howcouldyou not. But here is my two cents on the movie.I do not regret watching the movie. It was entertaining. If there is asequel, however, I will wait unitl I can rent it or watching on HBO.I would have loved to have seen more about the characters, their historytogether, their current relationships etc. I think this was barelytouchedupon by some of the characters and completely ignored byothers.I believe Tom Sawyer's character was not added to provide a "tokenamerican". I believe it was added to create a character anyone couldidentify with. Even if you are not into comics, at some point in yourschooling you either read or heard about "Tom Sawyer and HuckleberryFinn".I do believe that the fight scenes, the larger ones, where way tochaotic. However, I think that lends to the cast themselves. The more chaotic thefight scene, the less skill you need. Lets face it, as much as I enjoyConnery...the man isn't what he used to be physically. And as far as some of the things that occur in the movie, I totallyunderstand about suspending belief. But come on now... there is a pointwhere it goes to far. Most of what helps us to suspend our belief isutilizing things we don't know of. It is easy for us to suspend ourbeliefsabout futuristic movies... because we don't know what the future holds. However taking some very futuristic elements and adding them to the 1800sisbeyond my ability to suspend belief.

2012-05-04 21:58:17

I'd recommend watching something else

Before I even saw the movie, there was already one flaw to begin with. The title is named the league of extraodinary "gentlemen", yet theres a "women" in the league. I'm not a very picky person but I'm trying to make a point. In my opinion, the very beginning of the movie was just plain cheesy. These stupid london policemen are carrying only a wooden stick; yet they're trying to stop this tank coming right at them. Throughout the movie, I never felt attached to a character. If one of them dies, I could care less. Besides, two of the characters are immortals. (the vampire and Mr. Gray) The whole plot was just a big pile of dog poo poo. :( The point of making the league was to destroy an unstoppable force, but all they ever did was blow up a factory that "killed everyone in it" I mean how cheesy can you get. Yeah, somehow the bad guys are all in one spot. You just put a super duper big bomb in the center, and viola. They all die. Seriously, watch the pirates of the carribeans or T3. It's sooo much better than this mumble jumble crap.

elainew32 2012-05-04 10:21:19

Very Ordinary Action Flick

The gentlemen (and lady) were extraordinary--kind of a motley crew ofcharacters with great skills in defeating adversaries, some of themvenerable, some of them more of the outlaw variety, but that was the mostextraordinary part of the film. I admit, I viewed it just to see SeanConnery, hoping he would make it better than the critics had said, but itwas truly one of his most disappointing roles. (I wonder if he wasdisappointed in the result, after having produced it.) The plot is quitethin, with many holes, and there are fights every few minutes--not veryinteresting fights--just fights, and I thought it was one of the most boringaction-adventure flicks I have seen. A previous comment that Mr. Hyde lookslike the Incredible Hulk was right on--how weird. I'm glad some found thisentertaining, but I just found it boring! I think I'll go back and dig outmy old James Bond movies, with the best James Bond of all--Sean Connery.

This is a summer treat that begs for a sequel

I thoroughly enjoyed this film from beginning to end. I had beenlook-ing forward to the film because of the participation of PetaWilsonin the cast. She was great as LA FEMME NIKITA. I am also a fan ofSeanConnery. The entire cast excelled in this fantasy film and I plan to seeitagain and of course will buy the DVD when it's available.I hope it does enough business to merit a sequel. Overall thiswasa great fantasy for summertime viewing. CGI was also impressive. Also loved MR. Hyde--CAPT Nemo and the NAUTILIS and that car theyhadwas better than the BATMOBILE.

bhumphrey2 2012-05-03 06:40:52

Maybe not canon, but still like it

Not having been a reader of the source for LXG, I didn't carry theexpectations into this that fans did. On the other hand, I am a greatfan of JRRT and carried plenty of baggage into those movies.Essentially, anyone going in to a movie about a book needs to take themovie on its own terms. LOTR was nice in many ways, but lost a lot inthe translation. I still like it because it tried. I feel that LXG issimilar. It set a good tone, had interesting characters and bits, andwas consistent. Unlike something like Captain...and the World ofTomorrow (whatever the rest of that movie title was), which was flat, inconsistent, lacking in character, and generally wasn't much fun. LXGhas a good mix of action, character, period fun, and concepts. And ofcourse there's Sean Connery. The other actors a good, although N. Shahisn't given much to do, but Peta Wilson was quite good (IMO).

blackadder1999 2012-05-02 13:41:12

Yet another CGI disaster

Kudos for the special effects team, set designers, and many other bits ofthe movie that MUST distract you from the fact that this movie, specialeffects removed, SUCKED!Misspelled "QUARTERMAIN" clearly visible in the few mins of theopeningAbsolutely calm seas abord the submarine "movie set"I can make a list as long as Jekyl's arms, but most who are fans of AlanMoore, will hopefully save their money. Speaking of Jekyl, he was my favorite due to his immersion in his part, andthe almost believable prosthetics/CGI monster Hyde. Othewise, the only otheracting kudos goes to Stewart Townsend, who rises above his embarrasing Queenof the Damned performance.I can't wait till we get used to the effects technology, and go back tobasics with little things like plot, script, etc.

TxMike 2012-05-02 01:58:53

League of Extraordinarily Mediocre Plots.

As one critic summed up in his review, " The experience of watching thismovie is a marginal and moderately disappointing one. " However, thepremise is good, to take a group of extraordinary fictional characters andassemble them into a team for crime-fighting. It didn't bother me at allthat they all may have come from different periods of time, because they arefictional anyway. It also didn't bother me that one (Peta Wilson of La FemmeNikita TV fame) was NOT a gentleman. What bothered me is that the story wasnot a very interesting one. For that matter, it was fairly muddled at best.Unlike most superhero comics turned movies, this one does not have asympathetic hero, nor does it have a sympathetic relationship. Then, towards the end we simply see lots of fighting and explosions, specialeffects intended to make up for the lack of story. The critic Ebert has anexcellent and funny review. The DVD sound and picture are fine. Borrowedfrom my local public library.SPOILERS - for my recollection, please read no further. The team wasassembled by "M", who in the end turned out to be the bad guy. Dorian Graywas actually working with him. They assembled the 'team' only to be able tosteal the secret each had -- Nemo's ship operation, Dr Jekyll's formula, asample of the invisible man's skin, etc so that they could assemble an armyand machinery to take over the world. But Nemo and the rest of the team showup in time to destroy the factory deep in the frozen seas of Mongolia. Inthe battle Allen Quartermaine (Sean Connery) gets killed in spite of hisearlier saying a witch doctor in Africa had placed a spell which would keephim from dying. At the end of his funeral services, Tom Sawyer places arifle on the pile of dirt, we see an Africa doctor chanting, a fire starts, and the mound of dirt starts trembling. The movie ends right before we seeQuartermaine's hand come out of the ground and snatch therifle.
