A second chance to do the right thing

For me a good science fiction film deals more with human nature than it does with cool gadgetry and special effects. Take for instance 2001, Solaris (the original), La Jetee or 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, Children of Men and Blade Runner (yes, I know it has flying cars but that's besides the point), all these films were concerned with human nature either subjectively or objectively. Such is the case with The Jacket. Jack Starks, our protagonist, isn't concerned with the actual mechanics of how he was able to travel to the future, nor is he fascinated with the travel itself, instead he's concerned about the people who exist in that future. In the hospital, where jack is imprisoned, we witness the horrible mistreatment he undergoes. He is constantly drugged up and contained within a drawer (the kind you see in the morgue) while strapped tightly in a straight jacket. The doctors have control of his physical self but it is Jack's will power, his being that they can't imprison. Physically he's trapped and abused but his true nature, his selflessness has found freedom through the time travel (a side effect of his experimental treatment). In this sense the film becomes very clear to the viewer that it's introspective in nature and therefore less concerned in gimmicks (special effects, action scenes).I very much enjoyed this film and I don't want to go into further details and I don't think it's possible to. That's what makes this such a great film is that its theme allows for multiple interpretations which will result in multiple viewings. If you are into the films that I mentioned earlier than give this one a shot and if you are not into those films or have not seen them then start with this one and go from there.

i thought it was great!

i remember way back when i saw a commercial for it while going to seeanother movie, and i thought, wow thats going to be an awesome movie, and since that date (about early December) i have been waiting to seethe movie, and i just got back from the movies tonight, and i have tosay, i was NOT disappointed. Some people might not have done that inany circumstances thats true -- but that doesn't mean there aren'tpeople who would put others before themselves, and people who thinkthat may be selfish themselves, which is why i was shocked to see thatmany people found the comment on the movie information page useful. Itis a great thrilling movie, which takes you from reality to fantasythrough ones mind creating a turning tale of one man trying to save hislife, and help others with their own.

Nice Supernatural Thriller

Imagine a sort of mix of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," "EternalSunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Sixth Sense," and "D.O.A.;" toss it inwith "The Time Machine," and you've about got "The Jacket." This is anentertaining bit of film making, a nice little ghost story which is abit like those other films, but mostly an original piece of work.Despite the rather meandering seeming beginning, it tightens up like aknot about halfway through and keeps you guessing right up to the end.The camera work is unremarkable, and the film has a grainy,documentary-style texture to it that makes the atmosphere seemambiguous at times. The Vermont-in-winter setting, however, with itsunromantic and grubby environs, probably helps push what littlecharacter development we get into the foreground. This is a neat little movie.

A good movie, although direction and writing is lackluster, the performances make it work

The Jacket was a good film that was above average yet still had someproblems in its plot. The characters were built up pretty well, especially protagonist Brody and antagonist Dr. Thomas Becker(Kristofferson). However there were some parts of the plot that were abit unclear and unrealistic. It was written a bit differently by MassyTadjedin, whose screenplay was at best average, Maybury's directed wasalso decent, but the acting is what carried this movie. Brody,Knightley, Kristofferson and Jennifer Jason leigh all gave goodperformances, although Brody overacted a bit and wasn't as convincingas in Polanski's The Pianist. The best performance of the film camefrom Daniel Craig, who was awesome, continues his great work as seen inMatthew Vaughn's Layer cake. The film is good, but had some flaws inthe writing. 8/10 #279 on my list of all-time favorite films

The Jacket needs its own straight jacket.

"It comes o'er my memory, As doth the raven o'er the infected house,Boding to all . . . ." Shakespeare's OthelloI am as intrigued by time travel as the next critic and even more aboutthe games memory plays. I established my credentials by extollingMemento, as convoluted a trip down memory lane as a film could be.Memento keeps attention to details at premium and jarring quick cuts atminimum to result in an intriguing treatise on memory's imperfectionand our bondage to time. The Jacket needs its own straight jacket to keep it focused for theattention span of an audience that has to wait far too long to getdirections to where Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) is going, into the pastor the future or both and why. He has suffered a Gulf War trauma (thinkManchurian Candidate) leading to experiments performed by off-centerDr. Becker (Kris Kristofferson) that mainly put Jack inside a morgueholding slot. The hospital resembles Hannibal Lecter's lair, another example of howdirector John Maybury borrows without updating and without favorablecomparison. Jack's visions of the future are disturbing both abouthimself and those close to him, such as Jackie Price (Keira Knightley),a child he helps at one time and becomes closer to at another, whenshe's a 20 something waitress. So don't be disappointed because you thought immediately that Jackcould change the past, as if you were the first one to speculate aboutthat clichéd dilemma in a film which could be called thriller or horroror comedy depending if you are a geek or discerning film critic. Jacketso wants to be Memento that it ends up being a wax museum knock off, looking good from afar but unreal when up close.

Works well as a sort of grown up fantasy film

The Jacket is a weird mix of genres, but it made me think of a moreadult take on a children's fantasy story. The basic formula I'm talkingabout is where an unpopular kid who leads a boring life discovers thatstepping into his bedroom closet transports him to a fantastic worldwhere he can live an almost alternate life as a great knight fightingoff dragons and wicked witches of the west.In the Jacket, you've got Jack Starks (Adrien Brody), a troubledex-soldier who is locked up in a mental institution after beingconvicted for a crime he didn't commit. His existence in the mentalinstitution is really bleak, but he finds that when he gets put in astraight-jacket and stuffed into a morgue-like drawer, he getstransported into the future where he's able to spend time with abeautiful young woman named Jackie (Keira Knightley). Naturally, there's more to this relationship than we are first led to believe. The relationship between Starks and Jackie is the heart of the movieand this aspect of the story worked really well for me. The chemistrybetween these two troubled characters was excellent. I was really drawninto this aspect of the story and was touched by what Starks did tohelp Jackie. There's also a psychological mystery aspect of the movie with theentire movie itself being a kind of giant puzzle. Jack and Jackie aretrying to figure it out at the same time as the audience. The mysteryof what's real and what's not is left open to interpretation. Thisaspect of the movie is slightly more muddled. I thought I had itfigured out, but the very last line of the movie threw me. I suppose mymain complaint is that it leads to an explanation that I'm not sure I'mhappy with.Overall, I'd recommend the Jacket with the warning that it's definitelynot for everyone. 7/10

You can't beat a good time-travel movie

I'm surprised by the large number of negative reviews of 'The Jacket',I thought it was a interesting, clever and enjoyable film which atleast tries to be different from the usual formulaic dross. There aresome similarities with the also under-rated 'The Butterfly Effect',especially in the hero's efforts to change the future for the better, but generally this was an original effort, at least in cinematic terms.Adrien Brody was excellent in the lead role, his unconventional looksperfectly suiting the bewildered but determined Jack Starks. KeiraKnightley proved she can act as well as look beautiful, and thesupporting cast was unusually strong.I thought the ending worked, although it could be seen as slightlyambiguous - my friend read it differently to how I did.

A Flawed But Enjoyable Time Travel Epic

A Gulf War veteran is implicated in a murder and can't recall theevent, so he is sentenced to time in a loony bin. While there, he isput in a jacket and given a drug that seemingly sends him fifteen yearsinto the future.Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley (at her hottest), Kris Kristofferson,Jennifer Jason Leigh and Daniel Craig (who looks more like Tommy LeeJones than James Bond)... that's a freaking great cast. How could thisfilm have been bad? And, of course, it's not bad. It's an interestingscience fiction romance about a man who time travels and has somestrong connection to a little girl (who, thanks to time, is also ayoung woman)... and they together must solve the mystery of his owndeath, creating havoc in the process. It's suspenseful and gripping, like a corpse hand on a bag of money. Now, if you're a picky person like I am, you'll be like, "wait asecond... there are some serious flaws and paradoxes". But ignorethose! Do not pay attention to those plot holes! That is a mistake andwill take away from what is a genuinely great story.

Brian T. Whitlock 2012-05-14 20:01:29

Excellent! I liked it!

Going into the future without the invention of time traveling canhappen. In "The Jacket", Jack Starks(Adrien Brody) is a Gulf Warveteran who goes to the year 2007 after his "death" from head trauma.Being put in a straight jacket are supposed to restrain the patientsform doing harm to anyone including yourself. However, the place hewent to after having no memory of a cop-killing incident goes throughthe experience and gets more details to prevent other tragedies fromhappening. After giving the dog-tags to a young girl named JackiePrice(Keira Knightley, "Bend it Like Beckham") who lost her mother inthe future had to go along with what Jack has to say. Uncovering thetruth is a lot at stake, knowing who to trust was a major factor aswell. Going back in the present was all it takes to make things rightreally was the key and most of all, Jack had to fulfill his destiny aswell so he can find peace for himself. If you have seen "AlteredStates", this movie is a must, and it's highly recommendable to anyonewho have had this experience. Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A good story complemented by good acting

In many ways this film is similar to "The Butterfly Effect", but it isdifferent from it in even more ways. "The Jacket" is a mixture ofdrama, mystery, and sci-fi. Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) is a psychepatient that is experimented on with a special jacket which allows himto see the future. With the absence of white knuckle suspense oraction, "The Jacket" relies heavily on the story itself as well as goodacting. Fortunately, "The Jacket" delivers both a good story and goodacting. This movie was surprisingly superb in its simplicity. There wasnever any huge conspiracy to uncover, nor did Jack Starks have toperform any acts of heroism to topple a big nemesis. He learned simpletruths that had huge impact and shared them. It is a feel good storythat is powerful and moving. I'm shocked that I'd never heard of thismovie before. I would recommend it to anyone.

GOOD BUY

It has enough elements to keep you interested.1. Good pace2. Good acting3. A bit of a puzzle4. Just a dash of romance5. A healthy dose of sci fi6. Cool soundtrack (really... i love that andy tubman song "quiet inside")Before I first watched it, I thought it was going to be a horror movie... it took a very pleasant turn. The story was well scripted. I don't want to give the story away. This is a good cross genre.Don't buy this if you're looking for an action movie or a horror movie or a movie for intense romance/sci fi.Its a good indie pop film.

When you die there's only one thing you wan't to happen. . . You Wan't To Come Back!

****SPOILERS**** During the fighting in the 1991 Gulf War 27 year-oldUS Army Sgt. Jack Stark, Adrien Brody, gets shot in the head by a youngIraqi boy, that he tied to befriend, and is pronounced dead. It's thenthat his body is brought to a on-sight military morgue to be identifiedand shipped back home for burial. At the morgue Brody suddenly comes tolife and within days is almost as healthy as he was before he was shot. It's now a year later, 1992, and Brody is hitch-hiking his way throughthe state of Vermont and comes across a mother Jean Price, Kelly Lynch, and her ten year old daughter Jackie ,Laura Marano/Keira Knightley. Thetwo unknowingly to Jack at the time are to play a major role in Jack'slife over the next year or so and even after his death some 15 yearsinto the future.Fixing the Price's car and giving Jackie his Army dog-tags as a giftJack later get's picked up hitch-hiking by, unknown to him, a fugitive(Brad Renfro) from the law. It's later when Renfro is stopped byhighway patrolman Officer Harrison, Jason Lewis, he pulls out a gun andshoots him dead. Jack who was caught in the crossfire is knockedunconscious and the killer plants the murder weapon on the out coldinnocent man. Then takes off in his car leaving him in the snow, together with the murdered officer Harrison, to be found by the police. With no witnesses, and being the only one on the scene with the murderweapon, Jack is arrested and put on trial for the murder of OfficerHarrison. Because of his Army experience in Kuwait Jack is foundinnocent by reason of insanity and sent to the Alpine Grove MentalInstitution for the criminally insane until he's deemed to be cured andready to be able to resume his roll as a normal member of society. It's at Alpine where Jack is put under the most extreme anti-psychoticmedication and intense shock therapy imaginable by the man in chargeDr.Thomas Becker, Kris Kristofferson. During this therapy Jack issomehow able to transcend the world of 1992 to the future of 2007. In2007 he can see what not only happened to him but to those that he knewat the hospital as well as Mrs. Price and her daughter Jackie! I'sJackie that he meets in the future and convinces her that he's reallythe man who fixed her mom's car and in the end ends up, by changing thecourse of future events, saves her mothers life.It was when Jack was doped up and put into a vault, strapped into astraight-jacket, for hours at a time that his mind left his body andtook him ahead in time into the year 2007. Terrified at first to be putinto the vault Jack later looked forward to it knowing that he's goinginto some kind of time machine. Jack also knows, from what the grown-upJackie told him, that he doesn't have that much long to live; dyingwithin a week on New Years Day 1993.Not believed at first in both the present and future Jack convincesboth Jackie in 2007 and Alpine Grove psychiatrist and friend Dr. BethLorenson, Jennifer Jason Leigh,in 1992 that what he's telling them istrue. In the end not only does Jack makes peace with himself but makesbelievers of everyone he told, including the very skeptical Dr. Becker, about his time travel experiences.Jack in fact not only meets Jackie but also both Dr. Lorenson and Dr.Becker who mistake him for a son or uncle. Not realizing that Jack wasthe same Jack Stark that was confined in the institution that they wereworking at back some 15 years ago.Somewhat unorthodox time-travel movie but still very thought-provokingabout how time is not the study flow of events that were used to inthis form, or dimension, of existences but is like a book video tape orDVD that you can turn the pages, back and forth, fast forward orrewind. In the case of Jack Stark he can change the story-line to givethe persons he's involved with in the future,or even past, a muchbetter life. If not in the world that he's part of but in some kind ofundiscovered, as of yet by modern science, mirror or parallel universewhere we, or our doubles, exist without our knowing it.

A supernatural psychological thriller with cleverness.

A supernatural psychological with cleverness. It is just a story & notsocial commentary. It is hard to say what this movie means. I thinkAdrien Brody's character was simply a character to whom strange eventshappened.A clever and interesting movie about a soldier who is accused of crimesand sent to an insane asylum. It is unclear if he is sane or crazy. Hereceives a drug treatment during which he is straitjacketed and put ina morgue drawer. He has visions of the future in the drawer, andperhaps becomes a ghost. He meets a now-grown child that was involvedin the crime, and together they try to figure out the movie's reality.A clever and engaging movie. It is a psychological thriller with asupernatural twist. The performances and photography are solid. KrisKristofferson's performance was good. Adrien Brody had some goodmoments, but not outstanding.Lots of false color pictures of his eyes. I liked the greennight-vision opening. It is wrong to nitpick a movie like this for believability, but I keptthinking real girls don't trust strange men this much because theirafraid of sexual assault. He also shouldn't have been touching theyoung Jacky so much.

What a great movie! watch until the end and you wont be disappointed!

I just finished watching this movie and i have to say it is now one ofmy best impulse watches. If you love Donnie Darko as i do then you willjust fall in love with this film. While not as complicated and with notas many ways of comprehending it as Donnie, it makes for an easierwatch. That said if you want an easy-to-grip storyline this movie isnot for you. But as i said at the start if you hang on then all is madecrystal clear and it will leave you wanting so much more. This movieshould definitely have more fans, especially with movies as awful aspremonition getting a lot of watches. If you want a genre smashingthinker, with characters you will generally feel for, this isdefinitely for you!!!!

Profound Performance!

Adrian Brody deserves at least, an academy award nomination for hisperformance in this film. Sadly I fear this film won't be recognizedbecause of it improper marketing and poor performance in the theaters. This film was promoted as a horror film, just look at the tag- line,"Terror has a new name!" What kind of crap is that? Anyway I don'tthink he will be recognized for this role even though I believe heshould. Also, Kiera did a stunning job! I was totally surprised by herperformance as well. I mean she hasn't been terrible in her past films, just no where near as deep or real as her role in this film. All in allI really enjoyed this film. The direction, cinematography, compositing(effects in his eyes) and Editing were superb. I will watch this oneagain and I would recommend it any day.

Good Solid Flick

I really like these kind of Sci-Fi mystery movies that don't go overboard with the Sci-Fi. The performaces of Adrien Brody and Keira Knightley were fantastic and the story really sucks you in.

Brainless version of Jacob's Ladder

"This movie is very open to interpretation, and that's why I thinkpeople will love it." - Director's comment from DVD extras Right. For me, "The Jacket" is a very unsuccessful rendition of "Jacob'sLadder", with a big difference that the latter movie is brilliant andthe former kinda sucky. If you haven't watched "Ladder" please stop reading this comment and gosee it. It is such a good movie - it has almost the same premise as"Jacket", and it has a very logical and satisfying ending. It's not as*shudder* "Open to interpretation" as "Jacket" but rather ties up looseends beautifully and truly rewards repeated watchings. Both "Ladder" and "Jacket" have similar protagonists, veterans livingon borderline insanity as a result of some war trauma, and they evenend on similar note (not to say any more on the subject to preventspoilers). But to distance itself from "Ladder", "Jacket" doesn't makea lot of sense and is actually proud of that. While Jacob from "Ladder" saw demons and had disturbing hallucinations,Jack (Brody) time travels. Yes, I know. The thing is, Jack is in apsychiatric institution where a sadistic doctor straps him in thejacket and puts him in a morgue drawer. While in there, he time-travelsto the future. And it's not that he just sees the future, he seems tobe physically there, he interacts in people (in many ways, includinghaving sex with a woman who is supposed to be a small girl he met in"true time").I must say after watching it (twice) I failed to see the director'spoint. With these kind of movies where you follow the point of view ofa more or less mentally disturbed individual, the key is always todiscern what was "real" and what was "in his/her mind". But in "Jacket"it's not so easy, and it seems not to be intentional but rather to be adirect result of sloppy screen writing/directing. It is one thing tohave a goal in mind and then put layers over layers of ambiguity overit to allow room for interpretation, and totally the other not to haveanything in mind but rather just slap mindlessly some ambiguous stufftogether and then exclaim proudly "This is open for interpretation".I'm sure many people will discuss and dissect this movie here on IMDbforums, and it is kinda sad because it will be totally pointless. Don'tget me wrong, I like talking about movies, analyzing different opinionsand theories, but the movie in question has to be worthy of adiscussion. "The Jacket", quite simply, is not. It's just apsychological thriller with high ambitions which only achieves thelevels of average Hollywood timekiller flick.5/10, and this grade is open for interpretation.

A different take

Where does this movie come from? A story by someone who had never doneanything before, a script by a someone who'd only written one thingbefore it, a director who had made nothing noticeable but a fictionalbiography of a British painter… "The Jacket" deserves credit alreadyfor coming from somekind of darkness, and that's what gives the film anextra point. The film is an unexpected surprise; a flawed tale aboutthe deepest fears of the human mind. It's flawed because it could have known better and had all the elementsfor it. We meet Sergeant Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) when he tells us hehas died, but we see him alive again. He walks through the snow andfinds a little girl named Jackie and her mother Jane with their carstopped in the road. He helps them, then he asks for a lift and getsinto a guy's car; a policeman stops them. Next thing we know, Jack isbeing accused of murder and charged innocent because of 'mentalproblems'. He's sent to a clinic, an institution, a hospital, call itwhatever you want.Maybe it's too much to take for a few minutes, but this is the way ithappens. Later in the clinic one could think that Jack will go crazy, like Rambo crazy, because he's been in the war and all that. But thisdoesn't happen, and if you try to figure "The Jacket" out leaving itssimplicity aside, you may arrive to a lot of different conclusions.I've seen crazy, you've seen crazy: the patients of "One flew over thecuckoo's nest", the girls in "Girl Interrupted". It's different here:craziness is rarely seen (specifically in a character played scarily byDaniel Craig) and in one point director John Maybury uses it merely asan instrument to get to a crucial part of the movie. There's a jacket, and it will take Jack to the future so he can try tofigure out what happened to him. If I have to be honest, this'time-travel' approach seems to be the film's main preoccupation, andit works. But what's the problem? It's too easy, too convenient, tooplanned. Jack meets two fundamental individuals at the hospital: Dr.Becker (Kris Kristofferson…he's great) and Dr. Beth Lorenson (theinfallible Jennifer Jason Leigh); and he'll meet them again in thefuture, and they'll be surprised and you can try to guess what happens. If you watch "The Jacket" taking only this approach into consideration, you will be entertained but you should be disappointed. That's why Ilooked at some other things and other movies came to mind. "The IInside", with its intensive use of resources to leave the viewer clearthat a man was going nuts and an also intensive dramatic feeling thatsometimes was laughable; "The Butterfly Effect", daring andunstoppable, but more measured and truly worried about characters. In both of those movies, the main characters travel through time, andeverything seems quite frenetic. Not here: Maybury makes sure there'snot an excessive use of the score or the musical supervision that mayhave introduced unnecessary songs; he respects silence and doesn'tabuse of 'time-traveling' resources. The other key is Brody'sperformance: his humane composition of Jack never indicates someoneabout to explode. This guy stares, speaks quietly and with long pauses, seems confused and down to earth about the sort of gift he's beengiven. I haven't even mentioned that while going back and forth in time, hefalls in love with the same little girl (now older) he helped on theroad before, Jackie, played by a stupendous Keira Knightley that growsslowly into love, delivering a performance that starts from a very deepbottom, morally speaking, and culminates between the clouds. As I see it and said it (because the movie deserves the detailedanalysis), "The Jacket" is a flawed tale about the deepest fears of thehuman mind, like death. Flawed because it wastes a tremendous ensemblethat gives their best, flawed because it misleads the viewer with astory that's simpler than it appears to be. But its flaws contain a biddeal of optimism. "The Jacket" believes in love and is sure that deathmay not be so bad and scary. There's a moment during which the darknessthe movie came from and took place, turns to light. It may make yousmile.

A good and creative thriller that deserves a better reputation.

It's a shame this movie never really got the recognition it deserved. For "The Jacket" is a good and original and creatively put togethermovie, even though the story reminds of numerous other well known genreclassics."The Jacket" is a well made and good looking thriller that has somenice twists in it. The movie mostly leaves you guessing till the endand the movie has some well handled psychological-thriller elements. It's too bad the movie was poorly and wrongfully advertised, for "TheJacket" really is a movie that deserves to be seen and better known, all over the world. The movie is well- and creatively directed by John Maybury, whonormally only makes short movies. Some of the sequences are reallygreat and beautiful looking. Although this movie also makes it'sobvious that Maybury will probably never reach the level of truebrilliance, he still shows he has a great style to make some more goodlooking and interesting movies with. It's mostly the story andstorytelling that makes this movie still a rather flawed one.The story is complex and features time-traveling. In the end the movieprobably will still leave more questions than answers but the story isnot as philosophical or thought-provoking as it might sound. The moviefor most part remains never more than just a 'normal' thriller, a wellmade and good thriller I would like to add but all in all nothing tooremarkable or memorable in the end-, as it perhaps could had been witha different and more thought out approach.Adrien Brody gives an overall good performance, even though hischaracter is far from well handled- or made out to look as interestingas possible. It takes a well to get accustomed to Keira Knightley'sheavy American accent but once you get used to it you should be able toenjoy Knightley's fine acting. Really well cast were Kris Kristoffersonand Jennifer Jason Leigh, who gave both a more than great performance. The movie further more features well known and established actors suchas Daniel Craig and Brad Renfro in some small roles. The movie good looking with some nice nice looking settings andcinematography. It's creatively molded and put together all by JohnMaybury, who delivers with this movie a good and creative thriller thatin the end would perhaps not leave a terribly huge lasting impressionbut its a perfect quality movie to kill some time with.7/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
