A crafty nightclub owner (Jack) brings together a group of small time hoods and teams them up in unusual pairs (black man and white racist, Ivy Leaguer and simpleton) for a set of multiple heists which turn out to be an elaborate double cross against a notorious gangster (Dominic). During an extended standoff in a nightclub between Jack and his band of thieves and Dominics henchman, the hoods discover why Jack brought them all together for what amounts to a suicidal mission.

This review is from: The Immortals (DVD) I usually get movies that has a star I enjoy. In this case is was Tia. She always pleases me and for that reason I think you would like it.
This is a memorable movie full of those actors that even a casual moviewatcher will recognize. You'll love the hook of the plot. I thought itwasanother crappy "Made for Video" movie, but as it had Chris Rock I decidedtogive it a try. Was I surprised. Very good stuff with lots of action andsweet cameo's and it let's actors that normally steal the show anyway, beshowcased. Worth a rent.
I just saw this film for the first time (Feb 07). I bought it for abuck on VHS. I'd never heard of it and realized the cast was a definiteB-level cast at best, but I thought, what the heck? Just a buck.I was pleasantly surprised. It's definitely no great film, but Iactually enjoyed it. Sure, it's cheesy here and there, and it would'vebenefited from better direction. But I'd call it a hidden gem for anycrime film fan to find.An original, if bizarre, premise leads to some left-field drama andseveral genuinely funny moments. It's simply one of those late-nightpleasures.
This movie is never going to end up anyone's top ten list, but it'sstill pretty entertaining. I like the twist quite a lot, but, beyondthat, it's pretty much a standard heist movie. The ensemble cast isbetter than most of this type, with some pretty big names at the time.I remember watching it mostly because I was a big Chris Rock fan, and Iwas desperate to watch anything with him in it. I ended up enjoyingthis movie more than I thought I would. If I had to recommend anensemble heist movie to someone, this probably wouldn't be my firstpick, but I'd still mention it.Interestingly, it was co-written by one of the leads in Hellraiser 3.Can't say I saw that coming.
The main problem is it's not over the top in the needed direction. It'sa movie made of several, disparate attempts. I'll put it this way:if The Immortals (1995) is unsatisfying, it isnevertheless interesting and,in an odd way, ambitious. It seems to setitself up for something. The things get rather phony sometimes in thismovieÂbecause it is badly written and it looks like they didn't receivethe whole script, but only parts of it. The premise is alsounacceptableÂRoberts didn't need sick ,terminally ill people for hisplanÂit's not like it was all that motivating. In a word, The Immortals(1995) is an action drama badly written, but ambitious andunconventional. With the exception of Roberts himself, the cast is madeof thirdÂhand actors. (No offense of course to old Curtis, but his roleis strictly ornamental.) This film is sometimes a grim comedy, and sometimes an action drama. The idea was good, the literary means were poor. The movie needed ascript and a style. Even the gore and violence are badly managed. With a totally uninspired and useless director, The Immortals is stillinteresting and thrilling. The pace is good.Making an action drama withmany characters (at least ten, in this case: Roberts, the eightlowlifes and Curtis) is a good thing. Then you have, of course, to besomehow able to manage these many characters. The Immortals (1995) deserved a better and more skilled writer. As itis, it's very heterogeneous in a way that seems sloppy and clumsy. Italso needed a Cimino as a directorÂto give the movie a form. On theother hand,if this film could of been better, it's anyway good that itwas made. It suffers from a complete lack of style; but it isinteresting for Roberts _completists or simply for anyone who wouldlike to have an unconventional, above the average film.
This review is from: Immortals (DVD) Eight misfit criminals unite to simultaneous steal from various targets in the city. Of course it all goes bad, predictable but still fun and entertaining. There's a lot of gunfire, explosions, tough-guys and a gal, and some humor thrown in. It translates to a very good action-thriller. Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts, is as good as he was in Runway Train (he was nominated for an Academy Award for in 1985). At the end of this film you might be surprise who the real target is! It's worth your time, however it is only available in limited quantities, you'll have to order it and wait. But it's worth it. By the way, Chris Rock is true to form and he'll make you laugh! Rate R for strong language and violence.
I loved this movie because it's just one of those stories where the main characters don't have anything to loose. It can be Funny, Serious, and Sad all at the same time.
The Immortals is a true masterpiece of suspense and drama. With apowerful cast do eight strangers plus Jack come to life, and throughtheir struggle to survive their fate do they hold our heart in theirhands. And the storyline is a sweet symphony that wastes no timesweeping us off our feet and stealing our breath away, and as the storyspirals to its climax does it hold us spellbound, captivated by thebonds that form and the fight for life over death. And in the end doeshumanity give light to this intense movie, and do we remember apowerful roller-coaster ride that pulls us down into characters to beunforgotten.
Great story, great plot, and good comedy. The Immortals is one of those movies that you will never see an equal to.

Wow. Another crime/robbery movie, but this one with a great twist....a mustsee and all that. I usually don't like this genre, but this movie is goodfor anyone. Has moments for all kinds of people. It is strikingly profoundand this surprised me, that it was much different from the normalshooting/blood splattering movie type. A 10 from me.
Another Tarantino wannabee failure. Why the movie industry insists onelevating Tarantino's mediocre movies with copycat films is perplexing.I mean, copying a copycat? This effort fails on several levels. Anytimea movie introduces a dozen characters all at once, characterdevelopment is usually nonexistent, and indeed "The Immortals" has zerocharacter development. Anytime you have a bare bones script, there isnothing else left but shootings, car chases, and explosions. "TheImmortals" has plenty of these because the script is sorelyunderdeveloped. Eric Roberts is his usual quirky self, however the restof the mostly no-name cast has nothing to do but look busy, and pick upa paycheck. - MERK ............. I don't know what movie "Melissa"(above review) was watching, but it obviously was not "The Immortals" .I am now dropping my rating to 1 (should be zero) to offset herobviously misinformed 10 rating).
This was obviously a movie that was rushed out to ride the wave of success that other movies caught in the wake of Reservoir Dogs, and other Tarantino flicks from the time. The difference is that while Tarantino is a fantastic Writer/Director, this film had neither. It seems obvious that both were just trying to make a Tarantino film, and neither had the talent to pull off a decent copy. Not worth it. Stay away.
Surprisingly, Quentin Tarantino is not the only man that can create acriminal movie, with an interesting plot. With good casting, and meaning,The Immortals tell a story of a series of robberies set up by Jack(EricRoberts), to bring together a group of small time thugs, with nothing tolive for. In short, Chris Rock is hilarious, the action is stunning, andalthough the script isn't "Reservoir Dog"-ish, The Immortals can challengeit for best Mexican Stand Off in a movie.
Although this movie had an intriguing premise, and a few good ideas, itoverall just didn't work. The directing and editing were really sloppy, andI didn't care for any of the characters. It looked cheap as well. TonyCurtis was the best thing about this movie, though sadly he only appears fora few minutes; his scenes and a funny scene in the nightclub kitchen barelysave this from being a total bomb.
This review is from: The Immortals (DVD) Very funny ,We injoyed it alot but DON'T LET THE KIDS WATCH IT ,good production ,good graphics, really funny I would have to get it again if something happened to the one I have
I really enjoyed this movie. It had an interesting story line, goodcharacters, with dark humor thrown in to it. Even for a violent movieit was really good. Some of my favorite exchanges were between Billyand George. I enjoyed each and every character. I think the movie wasunderrated. It was one of the few movies that was released straight tovideo that truly kicked a$$!!! Eric Roberts, who has recently become onof my favorite actors, was incredible. I also enjoyed the actor whoplayed Billy. Chris Rock was really kind of annoying in this movie, butas you get more into it his character becomes more interesting.Irecommend the movie to anyone who just want to watch a really awesomemovie.

I usually don't have time for Action/Thriller movies about robberies but this is the exception to the rule and it would have to be on my list of My Favourite Top Ten Movies. I can't speak highly enough of this film. Nightclub owner Jack, played by Eric Roberts organizes a group of 8 people to steal some large amounts of cash. This movie has Drama, Comedy and Sympathy for the characters from the viewer which is rare for most action movies these days. The guys and the woman who stole the cash all have a secret and as the body count rises their secrets are slowly revealed. Tia Carrere is beautiful as always and produced this movie which shows she is a lady of not only beauty but good taste in scripts.Clarence Williams III gives a great performance and it is a real shame that we do not see him in more movies these days.Chris Rock is also very funny as the guy who is the partner of Ms. Carrere.I liked this movie so much that I bought a copy from the Video Store which is a pretty rare thing for me to do. This movie was made in 1995 and it has hardly dated. Bravo to the cast, crew, director and producers of this fine piece of Hollywood magic. They don't come much better than this!!!
A surprisingly well-known and talented cast help to make this anunexpectedly enjoyable film. In particular, Roberts and Pantoliano aresolid as usual, and Chris Rock has some funny moments, as you would probablyexpect. Things do slow down midway through the movie, but a wonderful plottwist breathes new life into the film towards the end. The ending scenesare all too typical, but by the final minutes, there had already been enoughclever writing and creativity to keep me happy. Despite some slow spots anda routine finish, this is still a movie that is definitely worth alook.
