Jaw Droppingly Origional

This audacious movie succeeds at every level. If you only see one film this year about janitors eating chemically warmed cookies which impregnate them with little blue butt fish, this is the one. Just hilarious! Standing out in a field of excellence, character actor Vince Vieluf steals scene after scene. Must buy now!

Pleasantly Surprised!

This review is from: The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle (DVD) While not my typically genre, (I am a 49 year old mother of four), I watched this film with my teenage children (my daughter wanted the DVD for her birthday), and I have to admit I really enjoyed this movie. You couldn't help but be drawn into this film mostly because the crudely funny and sweet assortment of characters. Although, the storyline was a little farfetched, but it was so incredibly entertaining and I lost myself in the rapid dialog, music, and amazing visual effects. Afterwards, we all just sat there and said, "wow, that was a good movie!", and believe me that is a rare thing these days that we all agree on anything!

I'll stick with Hollywood.

This review is from: The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle (Amazon Instant Video) I don't watch Indie films in general but after receiving a free film credit from Amazon and American Express over Twitter, I thought I would give it a go. I can say that this movie was getting painful to watch at about a third of the way in. Maybe I am just coming across as an uncultured person, but I don't understand what makes Independent films like this great. if it is the "originality aspect", I can say that this has been done before (South Park anyone?). I also don't see how a man "giving birth" to a fish out of his butt is considered male pregnancy. You don't get a tapeworm infection and want to nurture it when it is expelled from your body...

Everything, Including the Kitchen Sink

The old saying goes, "Casting is 90% of Directing." A shame theDirector hired a lightweight (primarily) TV actor for the lead in thistedious film masquerading its shortcomings under a pretty wrapper ofkicky graphics, pseudo-surreal mumbo jumbo and special effects.Truth be told, I never finished the film. I surrendered at about thehalfway mark and got the gist by scanning the remainder at 4X. Takethis review with a grain of salt then.Honestly, one of the funniest opening scenes I've seen in a while. Thelead finds a long-traveled message in a bottle. Breathless, he falls inthe water retrieving the bottle, cuts himself smashing it, only to readthe message, "Fuck You." It's all downhill, and fast, from there. The Writer-Director lacks confidence. There are too many disparateelements - religion, art, marketing gone awry, blind consumerism, corporate irresponsibility - failing to mesh. Taking risks is laudable. There are far too many derivative and minor films forgotten by the timeone's feet hit the parking lot outside the local multiplex. Butdramatic or comedic risk is not jamming many stories into one. Russomight have a fine career, but only if he recovers from this misstep.Further, janitors (who provide a vital service) will be insulted bytheir portrayal by elitist Writer-Director Russo. But he's safe.Neither Janitors nor anyone else will see this dog. (Wonder no more ifyou work in an office and your desk looks like a couple screwed on yourdesk.)Sundance should stop rewarding uninteresting tripe like this. It onlyencourages more crappy Indies lacking narrative drive and truth. The best way to view this film is in fast forward. Or not at all.

Beautiful and Haunting Trip

This is one of the most unique and eccentric films that I have ever seen. Centering on Dory, who has just lost his job at a data-management center and is forced to take a job working as a night time janitor, where he and his fellow janitors become unwilling participants in a corporate experiment. The acting here is first rate, with Marshall Allman as Dory, but its Vince Veiluf and Tania Raymonde as two of his coworker, O.C. and Ethyl who really steal the film. And visuall, THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF LITTLE DIZZLE is unlike anything you will have ever seen. Strap yourself in for this wild and exciting ride.

Awesome movie. Totally original.

Saw this movie at a festival and just caught it on VOD. Arthouse meets stoner comedy in a completely original film from a truly talented director. I would say that after watching this, birth may never be the same for you.

Comedy, thriller, horror, romance...a recipe for excellence

I attended a screening of "The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle"at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. It's rare to find a film that's trulyoriginal while remaining accessible. It might be an incredible work ofart but if it's not enjoyable nobody will see it outside the festivalcircuit anyway, so what's the point? There are certainly enoughself-indulgent excesses from first-time directors out there. On the other hand, entertainment usually dictates convention. That'swhat Hollywood is good at. So to be able to marry the two, to create afilm that is both unique as well as satisfying on a mass audiencelevel, is quite daunting. "The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle"meets that challenge.Dory (Marshall Allman) is lost -- spiritually, financially, andemotionally. He becomes a seeker -- in search of a religion he canbelieve in, a job with which he can survive, and, perhaps, someone (orsomething) to love. After trashing the workplace where his empty, meaningless days consist of entering numbers in columns, he joins aragtag group of commercial janitors. They clean office buildings atnight with the passion (and look) of the latest punk rock band in theirnightly sold out gig. Unexpected discoveries follow, and the madnessbegins.Writer/director David Russo's first feature owes much of its look toslick photography from veteran cinematographer Neil Holcomb and thesteady hand of Billy McMillin in the editing room. The visuals andsound are consistent with the puzzling mystery of the plot and franticactions of the characters, with mind-blowing effects and Hitchcockiancamera angles. Subjective POV shots allow the actors to address thecamera, as if the viewer might be able to shout advice on how to dealwith the predicament in which they find themselves.Great films need to combine four elements: a unique and compellingstory, a talented Director of Photography, an editor who can carry outthe vision of the director, and a cast up to the task of bringing thecharacters to life. "The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle"features Marshall Allman ("Prison Break"), Natasha Lyonne ("AmericanPie"), Tania Raymonde ("Lost, Chasing 3000"), Tygh Runyan ("Normal"),and Vince Vieluf ("Epic Movie").It's always hard to single anyone out in a brilliant ensemble cast butVieluf is hilarious as Dory's maniacally hyperactive mentor and setsthe tone for the film. Raymonde and Runyan, as the combustible Ethyland Methyl, have appropriately explosive on screen chemistry. Lyonne'sTracy has the face of an angel and a personality struggling to live upto that image. Most of all, though, this is Allman's film. Audiencesmay recognize him from his multitude of television appearances -- he'sonly done a handful of indie features -- but he carries this movie likea seasoned leading man. With childlike innocence and naiveté, Allman'syouthful face and demeanor bring just the right amount of vulnerabilityto the fragile Dory and place him squarely in the realm of today's mosttalented 20-something actors."The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle" has a fascinatingstoryline that mixes drama and comedy, as do most top quality indies. But it almost manages to create a new genre -- one part stoner comedy, one part political thriller, one part horror and many parts thatultimately result in a cinematic mindf*ck.

Brilliant Little Comedy

A charming, funny comedy that's got to be respected for its original story, and visually dazzling scenes that burst through the confines of a low budget. Something about this tale of hallucinogenic cookies makes some indies seem, well, a bit cookie-cutter by comparison. It's a surreal film. "The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle" whimsically addresses our willingness to ingest strange chemicals that companies call food. It kind of flirts with the impact of male pregnancy, but in a far more entertaining fashion than, say, "Junior" or "The Rabbit Test". The director is also an artist and utilizes animated bits and puppetry in measured doses. I don't want to give away too much about this diamond in the rough, but Little Dizzle is just one of those films that jettisons unpredictably into uncharted territory. Good times. It's like a nifty secret. I gotta say, it's memorable.

Not Quite There Yet

This is director David Russo's first feature length film. And though there is a lot to like here it doesn't quite all hang together. The story is basic enough. A misfit group of office building janitors become unwitting guinea pigs in a test of a particular cookie formula that effects them in one of the most peculiar ways possible. It impregnates the males of the group with a fish-like entity. This is a decent enough indy endeavor. It has a likable cast of characters, a lot of clever lines and a good premise. Marshall Allman as Dory and Vince Vieluf as O.C. get most of the screen time and they do a good job. Surprisingly, some of the secondary characters get better lines and do a better job than many of those in the front lines. Lance Rosen as the CEO only has a few lines but they're great lines and he does a great job delivering them. But the problem is in the script. The main story gets side-lined by Vieluf's character and his desire to become a recognized artist. That shift throws off the flow of things. There is also a fairly serious shift in mood in the third act that made me scratch my head. It seemed out of place with everything that went before. The directing is a bit uneven as well. It felt to me as though Russo's need to be inventive at times was too much for the proceedings. Some scenes stuck out as being more than was required. The music was OK. The editing was OK.If you're into the indy type films this is worth a look. I have to admit I was getting a bit impatient during the final minutes and started looking at my watch. But all in all it's not a bad watch. Just don't expect too much.

Fearless And Original--A Film Assault You Might Love Or You Might Hate, But You'll Definitely Remember It!

Here's the deal. Every once in a while, you see a movie that really challenges common sense and rationality--that is just so out there! In some ways, that alone makes it worth a look. I knew nothing about the charmingly titled "The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle"--but really, with that title, it required further investigation. A slacker comedy layered with supposedly deep meaning, David Russo's eccentric film probably has too many ideas for its own good. A satire that targets the processed food industry, stoner mentality, and the joys of giving birth (so to speak)--this riotous and chaotic film has a car crash appeal in that you simply can't look away. I know that may sound like dubious praise, but this melange of crazy ideas and visuals really appealed to me. If my description makes you wary, this film is probably not for you! I will be purposefully vague in my description of the film--it's best to let its unexpected pleasures catch you unaware. A motley crew of janitors, while wreaking havoc overnight in a business complex, get involved with some experimental cookies trashed by the research lab in the building. Prolonged ingestion of said cookies (a chemical reaction occurs when you eat them causing a heat to simulate home baked qualities) starts to elicit hallucinogenic responses. Before you know it, it is a case of science gone awry with an unpleasant medical side effect. The comic joke is so ridiculous, so disturbing, so disgusting--it's pitch perfect and you'll never be able to erase it from your brain.I'm not saying that the film is flawless. In fact, when it attempts to reach for meaning within its extended monologues, it falls a bit flat. But for visual flair, over-the-top commitment from the actors, and unique storytelling--this picture wins big points. Russo is definitely a talent to watch as he continues to refine his narrative approach and I look forward to his next project. If you are a traditionalist, you may well hate this movie. It's gross and chaotic and in your face. But if you enjoy treading away from the mainstream path, this film will certainly provide the antithesis to the latest Katherine Heigl romantic comedy. Points for originality and fearlessness, take a walk on the wild side! KGHarris, 5/11.
