I was sure I was the only person who had seen this

...But then here are a bunch of other reviews, so surely I can't be the only person to want my hour and a half of life back. I am a fan of Ryan, so I thought I would give it a shot. The acting was good, but it turns out the movie stays ambiguous to the end. Some people may like that, but I would at least like some sort of clarification, or point me in the right direction even. The movie seemed to try quite hard to cram certain 'subtleties' down your throat, as if to prove how deep it was. It ended up just being confusing.

Ohh My I

It felt like somebody was stabbing me in the I when I was watching thiscompletely moronic movie. The movie is all over the place and then theytry to bring it altogether at the end. To me thats not the way you doit. They wanted to make the ending a surprise so they don't use thetruth.Thats all you really have to know but since they wont let me posta comment unless it is at least ten lines I'll tell you a little more.It starts out with a guy in a hospital he is just waking up.He findsout that he lost the memory of his last two years and that right therep_i.s.s.e_d me off because if you have short term memory loss youforget what happen to you an hour ago.And it just gets worse from therebelieve me spare yourself the pain and do not watch this movie.

Memory as shadow

A film about the fight against the traps of past, the search ofgestures sense and about the truth like puzzle. A story about thedreams, guilty and death. A strange travel in the days of a past whomay be yours with the nuances of other person. The interpretation ofRyan Philippe is impressive. Powerful and subtle, it create the formsof fear and hope, touch of reality and rebirth of events. The subjectis old and the science to build a new image of theme is impressive.Ambiguous and clear in same time, game and dramatic discover ofyourself, bones of recollections and dreams in the cells of lost life, love as ridiculous fragments of lost pictures, a wife, a brother, a caraccident, some words. And the rooms of a hospital, the details ofambiguous sin, the details and the faces in a huge mirror. The life as possibility. The rules of a sin. And the sleep in far year.

I Wish I Had an I-Patch!

This was an ambitious concept and I even like the idea. But, the movie is completely ruined by the last 10 minuites that try so hard to evoke the elements of Butterfly Effect and Memento that this movie aspires to, but completely fails to achieve. The problem wasn't with the acting or even the visuals but the story itself that crumbles into stupidity and chooses to never let the viewer in on the truth about what you just endured. Credit to Piper Perabo and Ryan Phillipie for their efforts as the script failed them, they did not fail the script.

Intriguing premise but ending a real let down

The film started out well, and I was intrigued by it. Bits of thepuzzle were slowly revealed to the main character, and to the audience, keeping me hooked. Unfortunately, the script then got seriously weird, and the ending, rather than explaining events, resorted to that clichéthat never fails to drive me mad....****spoiler warning**** ....it was all a dream/hallucination! Very disappointing as sadly the writer's powers of invention weren'tequal to coming up with a decent explanation for the (increasingly)weird script. Or maybe they were and the film was cut. Whatever thereason, I do wish they wouldn't resort to the "it was all a dream"ending. All it needed was for Bobby to get out of the shower....

Craziness...

This review is from: The I Inside (DVD) This movie jumps around so much, everyone I know that has watched it has a different opinion of what the movie is even about. And with Ryan who could not love this movie!!

Brilliant

"The I Inside" is an excellent psychological thriller which will lingerwith you days after you see it. Simon (Ryan Phillippe) wakes up in ahospital with no memory of how he got there and no memory of the lasttwo years of his life. Early on he meets Claire, whom he doesn'tremember and Anna, a wife he doesn't know he had. Simon is also notaware his brother Peter is dead. The last thing Simon remembers is thathe went to see his brother in 2000 and that he had an auto accidentthat evening. Thus begins a tale of past and present as Simon relives the experiencesof 2000 and 2002, discovering along the way he can change change pastand present. Some have compared this to "Memento," but the story is really closer inspirit to an old TWILIGHT ZONE episode, titled "Shadow Play" and theplay "Steambath," with touches of "Mulholland Drive" and "The SixthSense" though lacking the emotional wallop or terror of the others.Nonetheless, "The I Inside" is a great psychological suspense film andI highly recommend it.WARNING: SPOILERSSome seem confused about the nature of Mr. Travati, Simon'swisecracking hospital roommate" and the reason for the "2002". Simonsaw "Mr. Travati" walking down the passageway of the hospital, hookedto an IV bottle, when he was brought after the car accident. Simon isDEAD, and his conscious integrated Travati, Anna and the emergency roomdoctors into his illusion, in order to give cohesiveness to theillusion that he was still alive and experiencing "time travel." The"2002" was actually 20:02, military time (8:02 PM), when the emergencyroom doctor called Simon's death.END OF SPOILERSThis movie was released directly to cable, where, fortunately, thereshould be a big audience for it. I predict "The I Inside" will become acult film and is certainly worthy of a "9".

The game of life and death

Immensely watchable, with a strong performance by Ryan Phillippe, the I Inside is a riveting enough ninety minutes. However, the film is also strangely forgettable, coming across as a kind of second rate, direct to video imitation of The Others, the terrific Nicole Kidman film that came out a few years ago. The I Inside is a modest thriller that has enough weird, complex plot twists to keep the viewers involved, but the film tries so desperately to be a lot more than it really is. Obviously the highlight of the film is the gimmicky way the plot unfolds, and the fun for the viewer is trying to unravel the tightly woven and complex puzzle that is the story. The film begins in a veil of whispers as Simon Cable, (Ryan Phillippe), a twenty something yuppie, jolts awake one night in a hospital room and is told by his doctor (Stephen Rea) he died for two minutes, his heart stopped beating, but he came back and survived. But now it's 2002 and a full two years of Simon's memory is missing. The doctor tells Simon that in order for him to regain his memory, he must put the pieces of the puzzle together, which, of course, is what we as the audience must do, as we watch the various seemingly disparate segments of the plot unfold. It turns out that Simon has been married to Anna, (Piper Perabo), a nasty ice queen and he may have been the victim of a murder attempt, and, worst of all, he was in the hospital two years earlier, following the death of his brother Peter (Robert Sean Leonard). Coming into his room and disappearing without a trace is Claire (Sarah Polley), a mystery woman. Claire confesses her love for him, and tells him that he was responsible for what happened as well. His doctor takes him for a routine MRI and when he is unscrupulously injected with a sedative, he wakes up in another hospital room talking to yet another doctor (Peter Egan) and learns that it's actually the year 2000, and his brother just died. It is here that he meets Mr. Travitt (Stephen Lang), a cynical hospital-patient roommate and heart patient who seems to occupy all of his visions. As movie goes, back and forth in time, poor Simon must figure out what is real, and what is a dream. He must also solve the issue of his brother's death, which continues to haunt him. Considering that Simon's mind becomes a maze, a tangled skein of memory he must unravel, the plot is actually not too hard to follow, once the viewer gets used to the idea that he's traveling backwards and forwards in time. Still, as with all such nonlinear storytelling, the question is whether the story itself would be of any interest if it were told as a traditional narrative. It probably wouldn't because what evolves is a fairly derivative Daphne Du Maurier-like murder mystery. The film doesn't always work because it relies more on slick production values to sell the thrills than story, but Phillippe gives a good performance as the panicky Simon, and he has an on screen charisma that is suitably impressive. It's all rather silly, although the ending does come as a surprising revelation and the seemingly incongruent plot twists sort of come together. There are the usual spiral staircases, oblique camera angles, swirling photography, and suspicious shadowy personages, along with characters mysteriously disappearing and re-appearing. It's all done quite well, but none of it is particularly imaginative or original. Mike Leonard May 05.

Could have a better ending

The movie is about Simon, who finds himself waking up in a Hospitalroom after a car accident. The doctor tells his name, the date and thathis wife is waiting outside. But... what... I have a wife? Isn't it theyear 2000 instead of 2002? Who's Mr. Travitt? And so on, this is howthe movie goes on. We see the struggling of Simon from his innerperspective, in a 'Beautiful Mind' style, jumping back and forth intime 'The Butterfly Effect' style, meeting people he does not rememberto know them 'The Bourne Identity' style and watching himself from theoutside doing things he doesn't willing to do.At the beginning, it was interesting to me to do these jumps and tofigure out the whos, the whys, but after the first half of the film, Ijust got tired to keep track of. I hesitated whether to stop watchingor go on and finish and wait for the clue - finally I went for thelatter, but what I got was under my expectations. It made me rememberto the ending of 'The Others', just no so polished and not so shocking,in fact, it was sort of predictable as we got closer to the last scene. What is more, it wasn't really clear to me, what actually happened, whywe had these time travels, how the peaces of the puzzle should reallyfall into place. However this was not because many questions were leftopen, but the storytelling was dubious. I couldn't decide whether thisis a thriller, or a psycho-drama. This is a pity, while the movie wouldbe about to take the journey with the main character, Simon, and solvethe mystery with him, to be an entertaining thriller the storylineshould have been more complex, to be a psycho-drama, characters andSimon's inner process should have been more sophisticated; the film wasnot boring to me, but not exciting either. The movie seems to borrowfrom many other good movies and tries to adapt and integrate on its ownstyle, but to my opinion finally fails at that and the result is justdigestible to me. If this had been the first film I see of this kind, Iwould have been excited, however, I have already seen a number of muchbetter titles.Acting in the movie is average - though not outstanding, but OK forthis kind of movie; pictures and shooting were acceptable, too. Thereis no sex, but a some amount of blood and violence. I rate it 5/10, itbrings the entertainment like watching an average episode from theX-files.

smart time-travelling psychological thriller

I watch this film purely because Ryan Phillipe is one of the most talented young actors in Hollywood; perhaps the reason he isn’t making movies is because he’s too busy babysitting while his wife take the star roles. Either way the movie industry is losing out because he is a one hell of a special actor. Second reason to watch this film is because of the storyline; it was described to be similar to “Memento” a film which is extremely unique and intriguing. The plot consists of a man who wakes up to find himself to have lost his memory and at the same time lost sense of time, the film concentrates on Simon Cable who can’t distinguish hallucinations from flashbacks and has nightmares of murdering his brother. The story is told through flashbacks and at times can get ultra confusing but in the end it all makes sense. I have heard many alternate endings but either way you will be entertained. Although a little short at 90 minutes, the film was thrilling and exciting and fast paced, at times it was hard to keep up as what was actually happening was still anyone’s guess. The acting was impressive; the supporting cast of Piper Perabo; whose acting skills are totally underrated was creepy and psychotic as Cable’s wife (or not) Stephen Rea who put in a solid performance played the Doctor and was consistent throughout. But Ryan Phillpe was the main guy and his acting was excellent as usual, his performance was intense and he carried the film alone brilliantly. I recommend this film, it’s quite unknown but it’s a nice little treat. Quick enticing thriller with great acting by a good cast. Watch it, definitely worth your time.

The I Inside, A thought provoking movie.

I was totally not expecting the whole sixth sense twist. I reallythought he had lost his memory and that someone was trying to kill him.The end totally confused me. Why did Simon wake up again at the end?Was he about to relive past mistakes all over again? Apparently by thenumber of bottles of wine on his brothers desk he'd done it before. Ikeep wondering why he followed his brother up the stairs each time. Orfor that matter, why he never bothered to answer the phone? I guessI'll have to watch it again with a more observant eye. It reallybothers to me to watch a movie and not have all the answers. At leastthe sixth sense took the time to explain its self in the end.

Intriguing Story, Disappointing Conclusion

The first two-thirds of "The I Inside" are fantastic: very intriguingand engaging, recalls "The Butterfly Effect", "Jacob's Ladder" and"identity", just to mention three similar movies. The situation ofSimon Cable resuscitated without memory in the hospital in twodifferent years is disclosed like a puzzle, and I was mesmerized withthis film. Unfortunately, it seems that the screenplay writer raised somany weird situations that he was not able to conciliate all of them ina satisfactory ending, and indeed the plot has a very disappointingconclusion. I regret and feel sorry, since this movie could have been amasterpiece of the genre. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "O Terceiro Olho" ("The Third Eye")

movieman_kev 2012-05-02 22:28:33

Is that I as in Butterfly?

In 2004, a film was released that starred a 'Pretty Boy' actor goingback and forth in his memories and thinking he just may affect thepast. That film was "The Butterfly Effect". And while this filmcertainly feels like that one, this seems to have better acting, whilethat one had a super high polished, glossy charm. I enjoyed both ofthem, too bad that this one only got a television premiere (in theStates, at least) Whenever I see Sarah Polley, I'm always endlesslyfascinated by how much she looks like a girl I know, but that's neitherhere nor there. I'd recommend this flick. My Grade: B- Where I saw it: Encore Mystery

Ithilfaen 2012-04-30 07:43:58

If you could change something from your past, would you? Could you?

Like with Memento, another film dealing with memory loss, it takes sometime to get used to the storytelling. The main reason is that no oneexplains nothing at first... clues come all along the movie up untilthe end. You're not taken by the hand and shown anything. Like the maincharacter, you're thrown in the story with no real point of referenceand it takes some adjusting. But that's also what makes the movie interesting. The ending can beperceived as weak if you're watching it like a thriller but if you'relooking at it from a psychological point of view, it's reallyimpressive what our minds can do and the mysteries still to unlock inour own brains. The acting is pretty good (except Piper Perabo who is not good enoughto be creepy or believable as anything else than a goodie-2-shoes) andthe direction is SUPERB.Don't misunderstand, the tension IS there so you'll get your thrillsbut it's not a mystery movie so much as a psychological drama aboutdenial and acceptance. In the end that's all there is to it.Don't take my word for it... check it out as soon as you can.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Okay, so I love Ryan Phillipe but what the heck was he thinking? I still don't know, was he alive or dead or what at the end? Can someone help?

A Great Psychological Thriller

How come I don't find it completely shocking that Dimension Studios would send one of their best recent releases to theater. I had to wait to get it out on dvd. Oh well. The story, cast, acting, and the few visual effects were excellent. The story wasn't overly original, but was very interesting and did manange to keep me guessing until the end. Not scary, but thrilling. It has been a while since my jaw has just dropped during a movie (for those who have seen the movie it involved Ryan's character and a knife). Definately worth adding to my movie collection. Maybe not for everyone, but if you are looking to watch great acting and to use your brain a little bit then this movie is atleast worth renting.

Ryan Phillippe gives a superb performance...one of his best so far

Ryan Phillippe (Crash (2005), Cruel Intentions) plays a man who awakens from a hospital bed and finds out that he was dead for 2 minutes. He also thinks that its the year 2000 in which it is not, it seems he lost memory of the last 2 years, so it is now 2002. So, Phillippe is left to recover from his accident and he finds out that his brother, played by Robert Sean Leonard (Last Days Of Disco, Swing Kids) didnt make it. He try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together in his mind and find out what really happened? But as he progesses he goes back in time to 2000, is this his imagination? Was he really in 2000 and did he go back to 2002 or is there something else? Interesting mind teaser story has Phillippe giving one of his best so far. Also starring Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead (2004), My Life Without Me), Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly, Lost and Delirious), Stephen Rea (...), Stephen Lang (Gods and Generals) and Stephen Graham (Snatch, Gangs of New York).

Intermediate Puzzles

There are serious spoilers below.Any sort of storytelling is about engagement, and one of the mostinteresting engagement strategies is the "puzzle" story. This comes inseveral varieties, starting with the detective story which plainlypresents you with a mystery and a surrogate in the story with whom youpresumably collaborate. At the other end are the surprise puzzles thatpresent you with information at the end that makes you re-evaluate whatyou knew: "Sixth Sense," "Usual Suspects."The ones that are the most fun are the ones whose puzzles are a seriouschallenge and which don't wrap up cleanly at the end. "Memento" and"Fight Club" were great fun, because you carried the narrative aroundfor days afterward and because it was purely cinematic, you essentially*lived* in the movie, overlain on your own world. Then there's the subclass of cinematic narrative within that group. Here's where you have a puzzle with several solutions. Naturally thesimplest one is the one usually considered "true." But it leaves someloose ends that are considered mistakes, or merely superfluous. But anon-novice puzzle-solver can see the deeper solution."Irreversible," "Identity," and "Primer" are examples of this. And thisfilm is another. The story is that a young man awakens in a hospital in 2002. Hediscovers he was there also on that day in 2000 the victim of anaccident, and he cannot recall the intervening two years. The twoperiods overlap. There are threats and two women that appear anddisappear. The novice solution is that he, his brother and a shared woman gotinvolved in a happenstance that ended in them all dying in a caraccident in 2000. (This setup and accident, incidentally areprototypically noir. So the movie invokes a movie with unrealcharacteristics instead of real.) Our hero dies for two minutes, isresuscitated and dies again immediately. The solution is that all wehave seen is the two minutes in his mind envisioned as two years, andhim trying to come to terms with the noir mechanics of the accidentthat killed his brother.A more advanced solution is that he was resuscitated and remained in acoma for two years. We are introduced to a character who has beenwaiting for a heart transplant. In 2002, when our waking hero visitsthis guy, he sees a comatose patient in the same room. That is he,ready to donate his heart. We then see our hero "kill" this recipientpatient by stabbing in the heart, both in 2000 and 2002. Our hero findshimself on an elevator with an orderly and a covered body (therecipient) and the orderly says "this never happens."So a more advanced solution is that the two years is spent inconstantly revisiting and reliving the movie inside during the twoyears of coma. When the transplant actually happens, our hero sabotagesit to put himself out of misery. An even more advanced solution is the one I prefer. For background, youneed to know some tradition about the untrusted narrator. Usually, youknow who the narrator is, but later you discover that they cannot betrusted. "The Others" is a good example. What's much more interestingis when you discover not only that the narrator cannot be trusted, butneither can your knowledge of who that narrator is. The advancedsolutions to "Identity" and "Primer" are of this type.So its cool if you consider this other solution. Our hero in fact diedin the accident. When he visits the morgue, there are three bodiesthere. His heart went to the recipient we know, and has prompted twoyears of haunting in that body and mind. So the narrator whose visionswe see are in fact the guy with the new heart. Shades of "Return toMe."In this case, when we see our hero strapped in an MRI machine, it isactually the heart recipient (Travitt, who blurs with the orderlyTravis who tells our guy he will take him on a journey). And that guyis threatened by a masked man who actually is our hero, Simon.I prefer this solution. You might as well. Oh, and it has Sarah Polleyas the cause of the whole disaster.Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.
