jusco's review: The Green Hornet

Wow, what a massive, full blown trainwreck. A complete disaster andquite seriously one of the worst films I've seen. Is it that bad? Takeit from me, it is. In fact, what was Seth Rogen thinking? I expected atleast a half-decent film coming from the comedic mastermind thatproduced works like Knocked Up, Superbad, Funny People, et cetera, etcetera, but The Green Hornet was a disgrace. Basically, it's a filmabout playboy-turn-misunderstood-superhero and his Asianbutler-turn-martial-arts-trained-partner as they go around fightingcrime, at the same time dealing with possible homosexual undertonesbetween the two that lead to constant estrangement over who is betterthan the other (I was kidding about the homosexual undertones… kindof). Yes, it's lousy as it sounds.I felt embarrassed for Seth Rogen. He's a great and hilarious actor, but I cringed every time he said something along the lines of "Really?""Wow!" "That was way awesome!" "You were awesome!" "That's amazing!""Are you serious?" "No way!" "So cool!" Did you really co-write thiswith your counterpart Evan Goldberg? You two need to reflect andrethink your thoughts because it needs some serious fixing. In fact, itwasn't just Seth Rogen I was embarrassed for. I was even moreembarrassed for Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz, less Jay Chou whobutchered the film with his horrendous English. Please, I understandyour wanting to break out into the Hollywood scene, but this was apathetic attempt. I ceased any sort of purposeful endeavour to decipherhis coded dialogue just ten minutes into the film.I observed intently both Mr. Waltz and Mrs. Diaz for some form ofredeeming factor; after all, they are more than capable of producingsomething extraordinary, the former with his iconic Nazi in InglouriousBasterds and the latter in films such as There's Something About Maryand Gangs of New York. But I could only sigh in despair when bothtalents were tasked to play such limited characters and small roles, disallowing them to steal the show or at least distract us from theannoying, unwatchable combination of Rogen and Chou.Ultimately, the story goes down the only path it can go down, theperturbed dialogue is painful to listen to and the characters are soshallow that the actors have no room to play around. Totallyunforgettable and a total waste of my time. Do me a favour… no, doyourself a favour and skip this poor, pitiable film.

One of the dumbest movies I've ever seen

This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) Its either an unexciting superhero movie or an unfunny comedy, but it definitely fails at both. The acting is horrible (especially the Seth Rogan). The dialogue is mundane and the plot so thin its "transparent." Rented this on Amazon; what a waste of time and money.

I Liked It Too

So many bad reviews......so I gave it 5 stars to offset the negativity.Truth said...this probably should get a 3 and a half star rating.I thought it was extremely funny and entertaining . If you are looking for a Dark Knight type of performance.....this ain't your movie.

Very Enjoyable

I think this movie was pretty great. Its a bit different from all the other super-hero movies I've seen, its got a bit of comedy to it. If you like Seth Rogan you will probably like this movie. And the 3D looked pretty good for being a converted film. Lots of depth.

Nothing like the first 5 minutes

when i saw the trailers, it didn't look very good, but hey, i likesuperhero movies, and i went. not a good choice. The movie wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good. Seth Rogan is great in40YOV and pineapple express, but he is a funny actor. he also sworeprobably every 5 seconds. it PG-13, not an R Rated Apatow movie. not aserious actor either . Christian bale; a serious actor, and great indark knight. perfect for the part. Rogan: not. tried to be funny, butit just didn't work.now, the movie was very unrealistic. bad action scenes, and the clichésremains: THE HEROES NEVER GET SHOT!!!! i thought they would wear abullet proof vest or something, but nope. never got harmed at all.also bad plot. they never chose between it would be violent like thedark knight, or would it be like a Disney movie. they switched betweenthe two, and it didn't work.if u think this movie is like the dark knight or Spider man, u r wrong.i just hope the green lantern will be good.

Wait to see it on TV

This review is from: The Green Hornet (DVD) Oh dear, oh dear, where do I begin? Seth Rogen co-wrote this movie and it does reflect some of his type of humor but scaled back with less fart joke type stuff. This movie was a poor attempt at its goal, whatever that might have been because entertainment was not one of them. First off, Seth was terrible in the role. Cato was more of a bow to the original television show which needs no changing. The Britt Reed character was no where near what those who saw the television show would recognize. Even if a person had not seen the television show, this attempt at creating a character was a big miss. This character is someone I would never want to meet or have any connection with. The fight scenes and car chases were too long. In fact, most of the movie was fighting and car chases. If you like that sort of thing-great. But they don't make up for the lack of a plot. Cameron Diaz was wasted in this movie and her character was a side-note or just an attempt to have a sexy blond on screen. In short, this movie was pretty much a waste of time. If you want to see it, just wait until it comes out on TV. It is not worth the money even to rent it. I would give it a negative number if I could.

Cameron Diaz Ditches Shreck For A Radio Tale

It is important to recall history when you look at this movie andunderstand why the script is designed the way it is. The basis of thisis actually the old time radio series, not a comic book like othermovie series in this genre. Because of this, the script is trying toupdate the 1940's to 2011. In some ways it does so successfully. Mytake on the lead characters development: The Green Hornet - Seth Rogan-the writers here decide to make him into Seth Rogan. That way thescript can exploit his comedy and sprinkle his usual comedy into thescript. So the Hornet is an airhead trying to do comedy. Is thissuccessful - pretty much. He is no where near the radio hero.Kato - Bruce Lee created an interesting image in their 2 year ABCseries. Most of that is scrapped here. What we get instead is a moretraditional Kato. While he is still a major martial arts fighter, he ismore of a tech-no geek and without him the Hornet is a dreeb. Thisworks too and allows the technological leap from the radio dramas to2011.The brains- there is Cameron Diaz as Seth's secretary. Her charactermakes perfect sense in this context. Kato is too busy to be the brains. The Hornet is too stupid to be the brains. Diaz makes the script work &I readily accept a 39 year old Diaz playing a 36 year old. She pullsoff this support role perfectly. The film is kind of like the radio series on steroids action wise. Thefirst half is dominated by Rogan's comedy and even Kato sneaks in somepunchlines. The films two villains, the nasty drug lord and the corruptpolitician are pretty much traditional types of crooks the Hornet dealswith. The film even manages to pull off the fact that these guys aren'tconsidered good guys.It is strange, but about 2/3rds of the way through the movie, Roganactually has a flashback episode that clears up the plot line malaisethat the viewer feels in about 5 minutes. Once you see this revealingsequence, you get along with the movie a little better. This sequenceis like a flashback on steroids to explain the Hornets father's death. This is a pleasant mixture of comedy and action which should pleaseRogan fans and it is pretty successful at bringing fresh life into somecharacters which date back many years as the last time it was done wasin the 1960's and it was not real successful then as only Bruce Lee isremembered from the TV series.

I Really Tried To Like It.

One of the worse movies I have ever seen, and that's saying a lot. Seth Rogen is not funny. You might think that would work to his advantage in a film like this. It doesn't. He's not serious, he's not funny, he's not - anything because he tries to be both, and sucks across the board. Sony just killed a potential franchise, and after seeing some of Rogens previous films, I'm done. I will never see a Seth Rogen film again. So how do these no talent guys keep making films? DVD sales I guess. Skip it, because you won't be able to get those two hours back in your life, no matter how hard you try. I have never seen so many people walk out of a movie, except for that time the film broke and everyone wanted their money back. Come to think of it, more walked out on this one. Hey, How do you give no stars?

Moderately Good!

In an effort to battle the exorbitant cost of 3D movies (especially the ones that undergo 3D conversion post-production), I went to the Sunday matinee showing of The Green Hornet. I don't know if that's really the optimal environment for a superhero movie, but I do know that I felt super awesome seeing a movie by myself in a theater lightly sprinkled with moms. What made me even more awesome was my flirtation with the cute ticket taker and cashier, only to have them realize that I was friendless at the movies and therefore genetically undesirable for the production of offspring. But hey, free parking downtown on Sundays! Which makes me wonder...how many of those moms were actually angry San Luis Obispo meter maids? As my stylish RealD glasses weighed down on my nose (which, by the end of the movie, was acting rather affronted), the previews drew to a close, and what followed was a moderately entertaining film. By no means a perfect creation, The Green Hornet lived up to its Buzz with charm enough to overcome the fact that it was little more than a souped-up, buddy-cop movie. While its generic overarching plot had a bit of originality Nested here and there, what really kept things aloft was Seth Rogen's light-hearted tone and performance. Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) and Kato (Jay Chou) were fun characters to watch and had pretty good chemistry. I believed their friendship, their obligatory fallout, and their eventual reconciliation, and I laughed out loud at lines like "Do some of that Ben Hur stuff!" Sadly, I was the only one who laughed during the entire movie. Man, those parking enforcement officers really don't have souls. As always, Cameron Diaz was totally useless. She is the Queen of inane, managing to evoke a sense of lifelessness in every role. She Bumbles through her character, Droning on and basically adding nothing. At least it was a new take on the love interest. She wasn't really interested, and neither was she interesting. In fact, I feel like she was almost more objectified this way. Rather than either of the main characters forming a connection with her, she simply served as a vehicle for Britt and Kato's argument. I guess that's what they get for trying to stick their Proboscises where they don't belong.Speaking of vehicles, the Black Beauty was one of the sweetest cars ever. The sheer number of weapons and gadgets made it the coolest thing since MIB's red button. What wasn't particularly sweet was the bad guy. In an attempt at humor, the villain constantly worried about his image and his hard-to-pronounce name, and he was right to. He just wasn't intimidating. I never felt the Sting of real fear or the sweet Nectar of joy at any point during the film. One of the more interesting stylistic choices comes partway through the movie when the villain puts a bounty on the Green Hornet's head. The shot then enters an ever-expanding split screen as word of the reward spreads through all the different circles of evil, from the Thorax of malcontent to the Mandibles of hate. Watching the sheer number of thugs on the screen grow as they receive their mission really does add a sense of dread to an otherwise threat-free story. More and more split-screens kept showing up until I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't keep track of them anymore. I waited for the repercussions of this onslaught, only to watch as the group of villains murdered a ton of innocent people wearing green and then never reappeared. And just like that, the sense of dread was gone. The Green Hornet was basically fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and there's some entertaining action and comedy. In no way does it surpass expectations, however, and many other films are better able to embrace the genre. If you've got some extra cash and a bunch of guys are sitting around bored, it might be worth checking this out, but otherwise you should probably just wait until it's on Netflix.2.5/5 StarsCouldn't work these in: Venom, Insect, Antennae, Hive, Apoidea, VespaFor more reviews, check out thenickelscreen on wordpress!

Creative Fight Scenes

Re: The spoiled rotten partyboy son of a slightly dickish newspapermagnate suddenly finds himself with a dead father, a Chinesemechanic/barrista, a sweet, sweet car and a mask. He decides to be...well... not really a criminal or a hero... more of a well financedvandal, for the most part.Outstanding: This movie was directed really well. I love Gondry'sprevious movies (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is one of myfavorite movies), and he imbues this one with a steady hand and a fewinnovative techniques. I especially love the scenes with Kato, both hisfighting and the sly sense of humor. Waltz is great too, playing acrime lord with a few insecurities. Unacceptable: I was kind of annoyed at the point halfway through themovie, when the two started bickering like little kids and got into afistfight, but apart from that, the movie was a bunch of dumb, slickfun. Oh, and Cameron Diaz is in it as a smart/stupid secretary. Sheannoys me, but there are some funny jabs at her expense.Summary: Seth Rogan wrote, produced, starred and slimmed down for thismovie, and while he played the same stoned loser that he usually plays,if you like Rogan, you'll like him here. The movie is a little unevenand I found myself losing interest halfway through, when the wittybanter and goofy action devolved into a giant gunfight and arguments, but it was a lot better than I'd expected.3/5Notes: Nicolas Cage initially planned to play Chudnofsky, the villainthat was eventually played by Waltz, but dropped out when Gondrythought his plans to play the character with a Jamaican accent were...really stupid.

Lame, lame, lame.

This review is from: The Green Hornet (Amazon Instant Video) Granted, I accidentally rented this movie because I'd been wanting see "The Green Lantern" and confused the two titles, but.. I really didn't like this movie. It contained: crass jokes, a lot of swearing, suggestive content, childish mindsets, a plot that seems as if it were written by a little kid, and action sequences that leave you saying, "What was that?!" Of course, this is all just opinion, but I was disappointed in this film.

Very junky

I agree with a couple of the other reviewers, the 1966 TV show had a better feel for the Green Hornet then this concoction. What the heck is this movie? I knew it wouldn't be that good when I saw the trailer with Seth Rogen hamming it up. The lure for me was, hey, it's a superhero movie that could potentially capitilize on a unique comic hero. Brit Reid was way too much of a clown. Nothing even closely emulated real life situations. Kato, with better material could have worked. It (the film) should have been called Kato! What a waste of my time. Let down again by another "hip" reconstruction of a superhero. Cameron Diaz picking up a paycheck, Seth Rogen being indulged, and blank charactors wanting to make something happen sums it up. If your into The Green Hornet, check out an old Now comic for an interesting take on it. Great audio but so what if I can't connect a film to it.

Simply a masterpiece of exponential artistic endeavours ---

is simply a remarkable film - captivating the soul and essence of theentire population of the globe. All several billions of them. This is a story of sheer depth and coming to grips with understandingfor the people who bring forth a presence that beckons the yearning ofsomething more. A passion if you will - a passion for the just andhonour - in all it's forms. The entire structure of this fine developed film is that the beauty oflove - herein described as simply put - lust uninhibited will provethat beyond our inhibitions, there is something more....somethinggiving and true that will embrace the world with all it's splendour andtruth.Feel emotion come from your inner reaches as the dialogue spark suchinsight and inspiration to bring on such presence that only a trueartist speaking such words can emote. What you have here in story blends with true realism that not only isthe words spoken pure fulfilment to the ears, but also the carefullyconstructed acting techniques and filming styles immerse you intosomething so deep and centred that to not see this in it's entirety issimply to miss out on a masterpiece. When the story offers such soul gripping and heart stopping emotions, one can not help but to be fully captivated by it's focus oncharacterization and belief of integrity and moral values. The characters here offer and define those expectations and more - ifnot only for the story but also to develop a sense of truth about whatwe as a people shall value in it's entirety.Every moment of this film is pure magic and the simple shred of lightthat shines from the darkest corner offers a spark unknown but toanybody but the viewer when encapsulated by this brave new story whichunfolds before you.To mark this as possibly the best film one could ever see would be anunderstatement of enormous proportions when nobody can ever the qualityin any other movie as this has.Yet another film feature with Seth Rogan as a well mannered andschooled young man who can teach us not only wisdom, but also the finerdetails about life and all it has to offer.

Entertaining Flick...

'The Green Hornet', Directed by the legendary Michel Gondry, is meantfor those who enjoy Cinema, for it's escapism & it's imagination. ThisSuperhero Action-Comedy is NOT meant for the pseudo critics, who onlywatch films to learn something! Based on the character of the same name that had originated in a 1930sradio program and has appeared in movie serials, a television series, comic books and other media, 'The Green Hornet', the motion picture, isabout 2 underdogs, who decide to clean, the unclean streets of L.A.Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg's Adapted Screenplay is fun and packs insome really entertaining moments. I really loved the love/haterelationship between Seth Rogen & Jay Chou. Sure, the writing losespace in the second hour and drags itself a bit, but the climax isnicely shot.Michel Gondry, the legend, directs this Heroic tale, perfectly.Cinematography by John Schwartzman, is good. Editing is neat. Stuntsare super. Music by James Newton Howard, is well-pitched.Performance-Wise: Seth Rogen & Jay Chou share a striking chemistry fromstart to end. Rogen gets it right, yet again, while Chou is energeticand lively. Cameron Diaz has been wasted. David Harbour is okay.Christoph Waltz is Fantastic, as expected. James Franco & Tom Wilkinsonappear in cameos. On the whole, Grab a Popcorn and get Ready to be Entertained!

Uninspired

The Green Hornet is a very old hero character, dating back to radiodramas in the 30's, playing alongside The Shadow, Buck Rogers, and TheLone Ranger. (In fact, the Green Hornet was a spin off of The LoneRanger... The Lone Ranger was the Green Hornet's grand-uncle, in theradio world.) Like his contemporaries he appeared in other media, including television. The television series, which featured 1/2 hoursegments, starred Bruce Lee as Kato, and was his boost into celebrity. The great Bruce Lee martial arts movies might never have happened if itweren't for his gig on the Green Hornet. The Green Hornet may have also been Bob Kane's inspiration for Batmanin 1939. There are many similarities, which need not be listed here. But alas, this feature film remake is a dull take on this oldcharacter, which deserved better treatment. I don't know exactly howSeth Rogen (who played Britt Reid and who has a writing credit) got ahold of it, but it's as though someone behind the scenes mistook theGreen Hornet for a farce comedy like Get Smart and then failed to evenmake it funny. The dialog had no horsepower at all, and while there were a few funnymoments, after a while I got aggravated at the desperate attempts tomake me laugh. Sometimes it seemed like the actors were derailed, trying to improvise, and it wasn't working. There were two cool things about the TV series. 1) Kato, because hekicks butt. They got lucky, because Bruce Lee really was one-of-a-kind.2) Black Beauty, their armed car that flips up from the garage floorand has guns built into it. While both of these aspects remained prettycool in this movie, they were also elevated a little too far into therealm of fantasy. And it didn't need to be that way.Not a good offering by director Michel Gondry, who gave us thebrilliant and original Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind years ago,and it may mean that he's one of those directors who cannot improve --or does not see improvements in -- a script. He therefore shines whenhe gets a great script and fails when he gets a bad one. Tim Burtonfalls into that category. The movie villain was played by Christoph Waltz, whose character was noless dumb than Seth Rogen's. A bad choice for an actor who just won anOscar for his brilliant role as Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds. What was his agent thinking? In all fairness, Waltz and his agentcouldn't have known beforehand that The Green Hornet was going to be asloppy script, and a sloppy execution. The super-hero wave is a big oneat the movies these days, with one hit after the other, but they failto remember other sloppy remakes of old radio heroes, such as TheShadow in 1994 starring Alec Baldwin, and The Legend of the Lone Rangerin in 1981 starring Klinton Spilsbury (who??). The Green Hornet should have been a much more serious period movie setin the 30's about a man who is inspired to fight the mob in the fashionthat his grand-uncle did as the Lone Ranger years earlier. That wouldhave led to a serious Lone Ranger tie-in (a prequel as it were). Missedopportunities. Save your $8, this movie isn't worth it.

I dont understand all the 1 stars

My gf and I both thought this movie was great. It's the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Don't believe all the 1 star reviews, the movie is pretty funny. The only reason it gets 1 stars is because the old people wish it was exactly like the television series. If you don't judge it based on how different it is from the tv series it is a pretty good movie

2012-05-10 16:55:48

buy the comic book insteas

I read the comics, wantch Van Williams/Bruce Lee but this current GH make the others look like Academy Award contenders. Kata looked liked the leading star and GH looked like a "what am I supposed to do?" Sorry Amazon but I "will not" buy the DVD.I'll save my money to see how THOR,CAPTAIN AMERICA GREEN LANTERN turn out.I really dont have to much to say GH except UGH........

mary716 2012-05-10 10:48:38

I liked it!

All of these reviews say how horrible the movie is, but I reallyenjoyed it. Keep in mind, though, that I never saw any of the TVshow/read the comics, and I also don't like super hero movies verymuch. I think that's the reason I did like this movie. He's acompletely new type of super hero to me. (Especially since his sidekickdoes most of the work.) I'm not usually a fan of Seth Rogen, but Ithought he played the part well. He and Kato have some really funnymoments. The villain has an insecurity about growing old and not beingscary anymore, and I thought he was pretty funny. I thought the actionscenes were cool and entertaining, I just don't know how great they arecompared to others. Biggest Low Point: Cameron Diaz, who I think is over-rated anyway. Hercharacter was dull, flat, and I thought kind of snotty. Biggest High Point: The chemistry between Britt and Kato. They becomeBFFs in a span of about 12 hours. Fun to witness. Overall, not terrible. I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Bonus!James Franco makes an appearance. :)

2012-05-10 01:18:49

This just sucked...

Oh man, this just sucked. I'm not familiar with the the original 1930s radio serial nor the 1960s television series with Van Williams and Bruce Lee but man, oh man, this movie certainly did not endear me to the franchise. I tried to like it, I really did but this movie hardly kept my interest. The potential was there, but it wasn't realized in neither the writing nor the acting. The characters were neither likable nor interesting. There was hardly any sort of chemistry between the main characters to make me even think they could work together or were remotely buddies much less superhero and side kick. Even the love interest was awkward and unconvincing. The movie would have been a little of better without it (though not by much.) The jokes were lackluster, the villain was hardly an effective villain, and the plot was dull and had zero direction. I wasn't sure if it was a comedy or a parody of superhero movies, but if it was either one of those, it failed big time. I know this was an action, adventure, comedy movie so I knew not to expect an Oscar winning performance, however, I was expecting to be entertained. I was not.

The Green Hornet

This movie was not only stupid and done horribly, I give all movies a 1 that DVD manufacturer/producers have started making the consumer buy Blue Ray to view any of the extra features. Worse, they have a menu and sub-menus of extras. Each one taking you to a message that says you have to purchase Blue Ray to view. What? You weren't making enough millions on DVDs? I will NEVER purchase a Blue Ray system. DVD is just fine with me. I can't afford, nor will I let any producer shove formats down my throat. How possitively rude. Boycot these fiends!
