A ruthless crime family calling themselves the Fratellis have somehow escaped from jail and are now hiding in a town of Astoria, Oregan. Home of a secret kid society known as The Goonies, their leader is Michael Mikey Walsh, and they are enjoying their last weekend together as a system of contractors have bought their neighborhood and are considering on transforming it into a golf course. However Mikey, stumbles upon a mysterious map to a treasure of a famed pirate One-Eyed Willie. So, The Goonies embark on an adventure to find the treasure and save their neighborhood. However, they also came across the Fratellis. So, The Goonies have to stay one step head of the Fratellis and find the treasure while avoiding a system of traps.
Call me a cynic. Not only do I not like this film, but I am amazed at howmany people here seem to love it so deeply. I did not see this movie as achild, so I don't have the same exaggerated emotional attachment to it assome. Still, I found it silly, overdone and incredibly annoying. Every oneof the forced-cutesy kids in the movie (thanks, Mr. Spielberg!) needs agoodthrottling. The fat kid is the constant butt of cliched, mean-spiritedjoking. I have no idea what the Asian kid is saying anywhere in the film.Corey Feldman is obnoxious and, oh.. just happens to be able to translateSpanish and treasure maps and anything else when need be. Uhhuh. The plot is absurd: are we really supposed to believe the kids could soeasily track down a 400-year-old treasure that everyone else hasoverlooked?Would a group of professional counterfeiters run off and leave evidence oftheir crime in plain sight, knowing that a group of kids is nosing around?Idon't think so.This lame movie is par for the course for Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire,Bicentennial Man) and one of Spielberg's weaker efforts (right up therewithHook, which suffers from many of the same problems as this film). Therearesome great films for kids out there. This isn't one ofthem.
Who could complain? It's about time the Goonies who went their seperate ways almost 16 years ago get back together (like true Goonies do) and reminecse about one of the greatest kiddie flicks of all-time! The DVD is FANTASTIC! It's really great to know that somebody had the fans in mind when making the interactive 3d menus, getting BOTH Cyndi Lauper videos dusted off and on the Dvd, and including the original "Making of the Goonies" documentary (imagine Spielberg without a beard, there ya go). The crowing glory of the DVD however is the reunion of the original Goonies (YES, ALL OF THEM). Coolies that you can see them commentating and watch the movie during certain parts of the film. However, the actual commentation is scant. Key says one or two things but is quiet for the majority of the movie, Sean, although great while he sticks around, leaves halfway through the movie to which Donner and Corey remark he was "captured by One-Eyed Willy" (gee great thanks Sean you a**), Corey is a wealth of knowledge and humor, Director Richard Donner sits there like a bump on a log , Keri Green is great (and still very hot), Martha Plimpton is also a treasure trove of Goonie knowledge, and Josh Brolin is great too. But besides the this-and-that commentary, let's all rejoice that the original Goonies are actually in the same room for all to see, even if it's for only part of the movie! HOoray! This Dvd was worth it! Anamorphic widescreen, remastered! Great Great! Love it! It's good enough!
So how can I explain why this remains as the ultimate crap? I thought"The Goonies" was supposed to be a great exciting kids-adventure, butthis is a horrible thing from start to end. Everything in this filmcould be so much better. It is never exciting and never funny, even ifit somehow tries to be funny with stupid jokes. The characters areempty all over and really uninspiring. You just want to stop watching. The end is stupid and without any kind of joy, the villains are notreally menacing or frightening as I thought they would be, they arejust dull. The film doesn't have the guts to take it self seriously anytime. And I really hate irritating fat children in movies that just caneat and scream! If you want to experience proper 1980's adventure filmsyou could see 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' or 'Stand by Me' instead.Richard Donner proved that he can direct entertainment with "The Omen"but "The Goonies" was a big mistake, with horrible bad uninspireddirection - all the acting was worse than it could be and the filmdidn't have any atmosphere or mood at all. Spielberg and Columbus'script was also awful and should have been less dull. Maybe "TheGoonies" had some potential to be a good adventure-movie but it failedat all points.Rating: 1 of 10.
I love this movie. Every time it's on tv. I watch it. I have the video. Ihave the dvd. I know what the octopus looks like and I know it would havefilled my pants if I'd seen it the first time I saw themovie. The Goonies will stand the test of time. I know this to be true. When Iworked at a cinema I forced a cult film season to be shown and it was myoneaim to get this on regardless. And it was on. And it sold out. In fact, itsold out and had to be moved to a larger screen to accomodate morepeople -and then it sold out again. Why? This film is timeless. Yes, the music holds it back and yes, it is abit jumpy (the cinema print anyway) but there is nothing like this filmandthere will be nothig like this film. The only thing that comes remotelyclose is Indiana Jones. It is was and always will be original. No-onewillever top it.The Goonies. You know you love it.
Great kid's movie and super fun for adult viewers. The Goonies are a band of kids not unlike the summer clubs we used to form in my neighborhood. Their summertime adventure begins with one of the members' home being threatened, and it doesn't end until they find the treasure that permits the kid's father to do what is necessary to save his house. It's the in between part, the real story, you'll want to watch over and over again. "Real life" beasties, fantastic adventure: This movie goes a long way to satisfy the explorer in each of us. A must own.
I think this is the greates movie of all time. It deserves all the five stars it gets. It is a comedy as well as an adventure. Their is a lot of laughs. Sean Astin is a great actor in this. He is sooo cute too.
This movie kinda stunk, when I was about 19 I did go see it, hoping againsthope that it was better than it looked. It DID have Speilberg's stamp allover it, after all...Stupid. Best part was when Short Round was falling, and saved by a pair ofspring loaded teeth(don't ask) which stopped the fall. But therest-chaotic,the kids weren't all that good, and the plot-derivativecrap.Can't say that I want to see this one again, either.** outta ****, will fill up about an hour and a half for yer 10 year olds, nothing beyond that.
As much as "The Goonies" is distinctly an 80s film, there's no denyingthat sense of timelessness about it as a kids adventure film. It's gotburied treasure, creepy yet conveniently klutzy bad guys, and thatarchetypal rag-tag group of kids who all go by nicknames. That's prettymuch the foundation for live action kids movies for at least the nextdecade. Unfortunately, that kind of kids' entertainment has fallen bythe wayside to make way for CGI in this century, but that shouldn'tcheat "The Goonies" of its sense of magic, mystery and the courage ofchildren who refuse to let rationality plague their thinking whilethey're still young."The Goonies" follows a group of kids on the Oregon coast, all withtheir own amusing quirks, as they search for a treasure that would givethem enough money to save their homes from being bought out by thewealthy folks in town. There's Mikey (Sean Astin), the fearless leader,Mouth (Corey Feldman), the smart-ass, Data (Jonathan Ke Quan) the crazygadget nerd and Chunk (Jeff Cohen) the rotund, hunger-driven, paranoid, klutz. When the boys escape, they're followed by Mikey's older brotherBrand (Josh Brolin) and his love interest, Andy--the teenage friendlysubplot. Of course the treasure is buried beneath the house of some insanelycreepy murderers named the Fratellis who are completely stupid yet noless creepy. Joe Pantoliano plays one of them. They're your standardvillains and perfect for the fantasy element of the movie. Obviouslythis film tries to play off producer/writer Steven Spielberg's successwith Indiana Jones by setting up underground cave booby traps as thekids go after the treasure. This is a very funny movie in both the cute family way and clever waytoo. The humor that comes from these kids is fun for children viewersbecause it's visual and funny for adults because of what comes out oftheir mouths. While this is mostly a boys-oriented film, it'sdefinitely intended for families, although I was surprised by theswearing of some of the kids in the film.Considering Spielberg, Richard Donner (one of the 80s most famousdirectors) and future Harry Potter director Chris Columbus all played apart in the creation of this film, it should be no surprise this filmhas the imagination and the talent behind it to work on all theselevels for all these different audiences. While I do think the moviekind of fizzles in the last half hour with all the focus on thetreasure and escaping, the rest is so strong that you can get throughit easily. This is simply a kids/family classic.
its movies like this, that i love with all my heart, its basic yetexciting and fun, and u know nothing bad will happen to the goodguys nthis film so i love it i recommend any1 who hasn't yet seen this movieto watch it, its great for kids and anyone else unlike some movies thatdestroy ur day like son of the mask...movies with ice cube, and in themix, with usher omg come on lmao take a deep look at movies before 2000and the movies after and tell me where u think the movie industry isheading, yet we support them and buy tickets for these crap made films, but other then that i give the goonies a 10 i love it 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 898 09
The Goonies is a great movie for kids. I loved the setting, the characters, the story and the villains. The main plot is this: The Goonies find a treasure map leading to One EyeWillie's treasure. The need to find the treasure so that they can preventtheir houses from being sold. So they decide to go after it. What follows isreal fun, excitement and adventure. I love this film still, though more thana decade has passed since I first saw it.
This review is from: The Goonies (DVD) This movie was one of my favorites as a child and watching it today relives so many great childhood memories. This is a great movie for its nostalgic value and its simple, good-hearted storyline. A must have for all people who grew up in the 80's or for those looking for a movie for their children.
Memorable characters created by a young cast & a superb story combine tocreate a brilliant film.A young boy and his friends discover a treasure map....and hear a legend ofpirate one-eyed willy....but unfortunately the bad guys are after the sametreasure...can the boys locate the treasure which would mean his parentswon't have to sell their home, does willy exist even after all theseyears????'chunky' steals the show!
This flick was great. The plot, the writing (I liked every "corny one-liner!"), Cyndi Lauper's soundtrack, everything. I mean, c'mon, what's not to like? One of the best movies to come screaming out of the 1980's. This one's a keeper.
As a kid, I saw this one at the theater. As a kid it is a really fun andfunny action ride. A bunch of kids getting together find a map in the atticof one of the kids and they decide to see what they can find. Meanwhile, some criminals are loose and they find out about the map as well later on astheir hideout is the starting point. A very good movie for kids, but it isjust ok for adults, though it is a lot more watchable for adults than mostof the kid oriented movies these days. Though there are a few instancesthat may be to dark for the smaller tykes out there as there are a couple ofdead bodies here and there. Looking back at this movie, one thing isinteresting. When seeing this movie as a kid, it seemed like theiradventure was really long and they were underground a bunch. When I saw itlater again, they really weren't in the underground chamber all that long. One thing though I would like to see is the octopus scene that was cut outof the movie, but the one kid refers to at the end (when the kid refers toit should have been cut out as well).
I saw this in the movies when it first came out. I was in love with thismovie. After it was released on video I rented it everyday until my motherthreatened to destroy the vcr. This movie brought the imagination of allyoung boys to the big screen. Going into some secret tunnels and finding apirate ship. This movie has everything. If you want to laugh like your alittle kid again buy this film
I enjoyed watching this film, but I played the Video Game before I watch it. The movie is as fun as playing the video games, Evading the Fratelli's andbooby traps are pretty cool Its like putting Archie and his gang intoIndiana Jones. The only flaw is not truly a children film. there is somecoarse language that may drive the film a bit beyond PG.*** out of ****

This is a very funny movie. However, the language is inappropriate for younger kids. We don't watch it anymore because there is a two year old in the house and he repeats everything. In a few years, when he is older, it will be like having a new movie again.
With the takeover of his home by the local country club imminent, Mikey(Sean Astin), a member of the 'goonie' gang who live in the 'goondocks' area of Oregon, plans a last adventure for him and his gang whenhe uncovers a map in his father's attic that may lead to the treasureof legendary pirate One-Eyed Willie. Joining him is Data (Jonathan KeQuan), who is handy with gadgets, Mouth (Corey Feldman), who alwayslets his mouth get the better of him, and Chunk (Jeff Cohen), abungling chubby kid who is famous for his 'truffle shuffle'. Meeting upwith them later is Mikey's older brother Brand (Josh Brolin) and twogirls, Andy (Kerri Green) and Stef (Martha Plimpton). The map leadsthem to a seaside restaurant that appears derelict, but they soon findit occupied by wanted criminals who may just be after the lootthemselves. So here it is. When we started the Childhood Memories Project, TheGoonies was always high on the list to watch, and why wouldn't it be?Virtually everyone from my generation and the generations around me whoowned a television when they were a kid would have seen this film manytimes, and, like me, loved it. It seemed to be constantly on one of thechannels, and is the type of film that you can watch from any point andinstantly become engrossed. It has everything a kids film could need -pirates, lost treasure, adventure, boys comradery, monsters (well,Sloth). And it has a sad element that could upset any child - thethreat of moving away to the unknown and leaving those childhoodfriends forever. These things make the film timeless, and a truechildhood classic. This was the first time I'd watched the film since my youth, and thefirst thing that struck me was how dark the film is. There's some scarystuff in here (if you're a kid!) - skeletal bodies, a frozen corpsewith a bullet hole in his head, a huge deformed monster chained in adark room, and Martha Plimpton. There's also a lot of swearing. It'snot the type of thing you get in modern day kiddy s**t. Those films aretoo busy breaking into song or filling the screen with flashy effectsto stop the X-Box and iPhone generation from losing concentration for10 seconds and checking their f*****g Facebook account. The Gooniesgives us the real dirt, danger and sense of adventure that came withchildhood, where an abandoned railway line would provide a whole day'sentertainment (in my case).I also found it extremely moving. I'm not sure if it was the nostalgicman-child in me that was transported back to a time where getting backhome in time for dinner was the extent of my worries, or if it was fromthe many beers that I had. Either way, by the end I got all soppy. TheGoonies is by no means a brilliant film, but the legacy it left behindit and the sheer scale of it's cult, nostalgic fan base is there for areason - because it's the perfect childhood adventure film. And forthat reason, and for the fact that I've never felt two hours fly by sofast, I'm giving the film five stars. This is the film that gave us thetruffle shuffle and 'hey you guys!' after all. I just hope youngergenerations get to see it and are capable of appreciating it afterbeing brought up in a world of Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, MileyCyrus and Michael f*****g Bay. Goonies never say die.www.the-wrath-of-blog.blogspot.com
It reminds me of being 6 years old again and wayching it then!I'm still waiting for the DVD with all those enigmatic deleted scenes like the snack shop and the octopus. Nevertheless, buy it for its nostalgic value
