Only the fifth element can stop the Evil from extinguishing life, as it tries to do every five thousand years. She is helped by ex-soldier, current-cab-driver, Korben Dallas, who is, in turn, helped by PrinceArsenio clone, Ruby Rhod. Unfortunately, Evil is being assisted by Mr. Zorg, who seeks to profit from the chaos that Evil will bring, and his alien mercenaries.

This not a Hollywood film - it is wild, it is colorful, and it is crazy, andmore than anything, it is an individual vision, something Hollywood has notallowed since the glorious old days. You will be throughly sick of ChrisRock's over the top DJ by the end of the movie, but other than that, MillaJovovich is mysterious and beautiful, Bruce Willis is himself, and Ian Holmscores yet again and as the actor with an uncanny sense of what scripts aregoing to turn into extraordinary movies. In my opinion, not since Orson Welles was let loose in the Universal backlot to make Citizen Kane has there been such a fine example of youthfulcinematic genius. Forget maturity, go back to being a teenager for a coupleof hours; you won't get arrested.
I have tried to figure out what all the fuss is about, but I have failedtotally. I cannot see any merit at all in this lunacy.Chris Tucker in particular is painful to watch. In fact, that pretty muchdescribes the whole film. Bruce Willis has been in some excellent movies, but this definitely isn'tone of them.
I'm going to give this a 7/10 for a few fantastic scenes, including anawesome gunfight scene at the end. Bruce Willis was great in thisscene, and it would be his best gun-play scene had he not done last manstanding. But other than a few great scenes, and when I say great- Imean just that, this movie had stupid cartoon dialog and some hall ofshame-worthy over acting. The plot is kind of hard to swallow at times. It can be complex, butcan also be shortened for those of whom don't like to think very muchduring a film. The basic plot is as follows; Bruce Willis plays a badmotherf*cker named Corben Dallas, who has lost his wife and is slummingit in futuristic Brooklyn. He is a former pilot who worked for thegovernment- now, well... not so much. He is a taxi driver who, up untilthe first day you meet him, has a license with 3 marks on it I believe. After that day though, he ends up with the supreme being fallingthrough the roof of his cab, his 3 marks being taken away along withhis license and his job, and to top it all off- this chick can't speaka word of English. Now he goes to a priest, the priest that the chickkeeps talking about- yelling out his name and so forth. This priest isan expert on the matter, and until Corben Dallas and his supreme beingfriend came knocking on his door, he thought mankind was doomed. Corbensigns up, unwillingly, to do one last mission for the government, seeing as how he already was knee deep in it, and is set up to win acontest- putting him on a ship with some sacred stones that he has toretrieve. You know, it is not as complicated as it sounds, in fact it'squite an easy film to follow, but on paper... not so much.So anyway, this film was very entertaining, and seeing as how I justwatched total recall this morning- I felt the need to go out and rentthe fifth element. They remind me of each other for some reason. Iheard through the grapevine that the first draft of this film waswritten by Luc Besson in the 10th grade. Now I'm not sure if this istrue or not, and I am way too lazy to check on the IMDb.com triviasection- if it's even there. But anyway, if you're bored and want acool film that is very, very sci-fi- then you should definitely rentthis. I'd say it redeems itself for all the cartoonish dialog andover-acting when they reach the Oprah, but then again- I liked the filmas a whole. Bruce Willis is excellent, as is Gary Oldman, but MillaJovovich (spelling?) is phenomenal. Excellent to say the least. Too badshe went on and did resident evil. This was worth a 7/10. Just about as good as Total Recall, although Iforget what I gave total recall.
I have read all the other reviews on this page about this film, most of themsaying it is terrific, greatest movie ever, but in my mind, nothing could befurther from the truth. I found this film to be a piece of garbage andtotally absurd. Zorg is one of the stupidest villiais I have ever seen, andthis film doesn't amount to much. The ending's OK, but the majority waspure trash. At the beginning, I was giving it a chance, despite how bad itseemed, but throughout the absurdity of the film just kept growing. ChrisTucker's character is stupid, annoying, absurd, and unnecessary in thismovie, his screaming all the time still building on the absurdity. AfterLuc Besson's 'The Professional', which is a great film, and after seeing the'Die Hard Trilogy', which are some of the best movies around, I had highexpectations because of the clashing of Bruce Willis and Luc Besson. Butthe film was horrid. A very disappointing film that should be avoided atall costs by everyone.
OK, I'll be honest... I didn't get it. A race of aliens in charge ofprotecting planet earth. Another, more sinister alien trying to destroyplanet earth. A scantily clad woman that is the key to protecting earthas the "fifth element". There were some strange creatures and somestrange humans (Ruby Rhod, played by Chris Tucker). With all of thecreatures it reminded me of Dark Crystal or some Jim Henson production.I get that the planet had to be saved, but I didn't get all the stuffin between. The whole movie was strange. The characters seemed randomand non-essential. The movie wasn't all that bad, it just wasn't allthat good.
I loved this movie! It was quirky and cooky and full of hilariouscharacters. Terry Gilliams visions are always great as I also lovedBrazil and his Monty Python stuff.Bruce Willis is the star of the movie but Milla Jovovich blowseverybody off the screen. She is funny, beautiful, and kicks butt asThe Fifth Element Leeloo. I can watch her over and over in this role. The bright orange hair and the innocence she portrays is just uniqueand also touching. The scene where she goes into Bruce Lee mode ishilarious and fantastic. Also Chris Tucker has a break out role. And lastly I have no idea whothe Diva is or who was actually singing but it was beautiful.
If you're a Scif Fi buff this movie is right up you're alley, Visualy it is wonderful to watch. The chase scenes in the city are incredible to watch, there is so much going on. The look of this movie is very fun. For example the uniforms of the McDonald Workers with there Wonderwoman Style Dresses and golden arch hats. The costume design is great. I can't say enough good things about this movie, I LOVED IT, it's on my Top Ten Favorates!
The Fifth Element (1997, Directed by Luc Besson), set in the 23rdcentury, is a Cyber-Punk film bursting with hilarity, technology, electrifying music and flying cars. It ridiculously screams sci-fi, somuch that it can be mistaken for a spoof, of which it certainly is not.Besson, ever the eye for detail, creates the future in a fantasticallyzingy way that draws the audience in to its colourful world of fastpaced mingleaninga.Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) is former special agent, now taxi driverturned special agent again in order to save the world from an evergrowing evil in the form of a giant burning evil 'scare the pants ofThe President' ball of fire. In order to save the world from this saidevil he needs five elements, 4 of which are unknown to everybody exceptthe fifth element who he predictably meets after she falls into histaxi after being chased by cops.Leeloo Minai Lekarariba Laminai Tchai Ekbat De Sebat, otherwise knownas Leeloo, is the Fifth Element that predictably falls into KorbenDallas' taxi cab. She is not human, not robot, not anything really, although she is very much a human. She was built from strands of DNA tocreate what scientists called 'The Perfect Being', and she is really. She was built to 'Protect'. She is a likable character; her flamingorange hair accentuates her unique personality. She is the brainiestcharacter, knows everything, and learns everything by just looking atpictures and text for just one split second, possibly due to the factthat she was made with a photographic memory.Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker) is a squeaky voiced, over-dramatic confusingRadio DJ whose hair is really eccentric and unpredictable. He followsKorban around like a bad smell, and annoys the living daylights out ofhim. If it's not the plot of the film that keeps you entertained, it'sRuby. While he may seem annoying and you may think that you will hatehim, I can assure you that you won't. There's just something about himthat makes you want to see this film over and over again. In all thescenes he's in, he speaks in his own way, and will not shut up. Most ofthe time you can hear nothing but him blabbering on. He is a greatcharacter for a film like this. The film is largely dependant on its fast paced music to keep theaudience enthralled, the punky pop music is extremely enjoyable andhelps keep the film bouncing on its toes. In one electrifyinglygripping scene, an opera singer, known as the Diva, is singingclassical opera, and then suddenly BOOM! She starts singing opera butwith a punkish popish side to it, zingy waves of fast paced electricpop music flying into your awaiting ears and through your brain, instantly changing the mood of the scene. Whilst the Diva is singing, the scene cuts back and forth on time with the beat of the musicbetween the Diva and a fight between Leeloo the Fifth Element andaliens bent on stealing the other 4 elements, the music greatlyaffecting the feelings happening in the fight. This film entertained me all the way through, and has burnt itself withgreat detail and a lot of smoke into my memory; I could never forgetthe colourful electric eccentric hilarious fast paced world of thisfilm. If you ever get the chance to see this film, you shoulddefinitely watch it, you will be thoroughly amazed.
This is a poor film wrapped around some good action scenes. The plot is nearly incomprehensible and the direction is just lame. Don't waste your time or money on this stupid film.
The Movie is pretty good, but this is a title that really makes DVD Shine, on a good home theater the audio is awesome.the biggest bummer is that there are NO DVD Extra's. eg: no extra scenes, or director's comments. kind of a bummer
There is not much praise I can give this film that has not already beengiven. Everything from the sets and costumes to the casting and acting isspot on. The relationship between Corben and Leelu is tangible, withbrilliant supporting roles from Oldman, Holme and Tucker.I felt at the time of its release, The Fifth Element was was terriblyunder-publicised, and this led me to believe it would have a commonhollywood flaw of being a good idea on an insubstantial budget, but this isfar from true- all of the effects are fine. Plenty of involving imagery, direction and writing to bring you back for repeated enjoyment.
"The Fifth Element" is a terrific science fiction movie. It had some great actors and actresses, it had great acting. Plus the outstanding costumes, sound effects and story. Bruce Willis did very good as Korben Dallas, and Milla Jovovich as Leeloo, the "Supreme Being." Chris Tucker is one hilarious character as Ruby Rhod, the traveling and famous DJ. Everyone who likes such entertainment should see this movie, in my opinion.
This movie is the best movie I have ever seen and let me tell you I've seen many movies! One of the reasons why it is so funny is that Chris Tucker screams like a little girl!!! This movie is da bomb and #1!!!! so stop reading all of the reviews and buy it NOW!!!!!!
No, I really was not disappointed. The Fifth Element has it all: drama, comedy, romance, a fast-paced plot, and great characters. Chris Tucker islaugh-out-loud funny as the dim-witted, vain Ruby Rhod. Gary Oldman isdeliciously sinister as Zorg. And Bruce Willis is sarcastic and gritty asour hero, Korben Dallas. The film is set in a mind-boggling future withbody rebuilding, interstellar travel, and, of course, flying cars. Theplot(to make it short: defeat the bad guy, use the weapon against evil, savetheworld) is quick and keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you have themisfortune of being someone who has not seen this film, I would reccommendthat you go rent it.
This movie is a must have. Awesome special effects and wicked explosions. This movie is great.
The movie started out as a good sci-fi flick, then degenerated into a SPACEBALLS meet DIEHARD. (I guess if you can't act -- the next best thing is being an action hero or an annoying screamer). Too bad for sci-fi lovers. As a previous reviewer said: Hey Hollywood; how about giving us sci-fi fans a break? Then again, we shouldn't expect too much out of the Hollywood crowd.
This is a beautiful movie with stunning visuals and exotic music. I loved it. On the down side, the plot is sometimes predictable. But overall, it is worth watching. Five stars!
I first rated this movie a 6. It's a fun science fiction film, but has alarge number of flaws. The plot is really lame, the costume range frommagnificent to darn right awful, and I dare anyone to name any musical genrethat they didn't cram into this film (country, opera, rock, reggae, hula, disco, everything). There's not a lot that can be said good about this film(except some wonderful costumes, really great sets and effects, and one ofthe best choreographed fight scenes I've ever seen [Milla Jovovich vs. thealiens]). But, you find yourself drawn to this film every time it's on (andit's on a lot). I've seen this film several times in the last month. Ijust had to go back and re-rate it an 8 for a level of artistry thattranscends the surface weaknesses and makes this darn fun entertainment. I do think this film should have gotten an Academy Award nomination forcostumes (in spite of the strappy outfit). Instead, the award when toTitanic, which rented all of the costumes off the rack. Why must SF, wherenearly every costume is an original achievement, always take a back seat tohistorical films that just rent the stuff already ready togo.
As before great movie I saw it once and fell in love with it. It might have to do with the charters of leelo and the charter Bruce Willis plays. Great movie for any who wants to see what we might become if we work hard enough to achive it.
Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg. Luc Besson deserves a medal for that name.Take the two most beautiful names from a language priding itself onelegance and add the ugliest one-syllable name ever concocted. MontyPython would have loved using it. It would have been as classic "Mr.Smoke-too-much," and "Sir Robin the Cowardly." An ingenious name doesnot make a movie by itself, but this one sums up Besson's brilliance. His world 250 years in the future has enough creativity for ten movies, and nothing is too absurd to occur in it.In the year 2263, Earth is the home of The Federated Territories, whichis much like the Federation in Star Trek. People now live hundreds offeet above the surface. New York's flying cars still adhere toorganized paths, but traffic moves in several ascending layers. Mostpeople live in apartments where the bed retracts into the wall and theycan have a restaurant come directly to their window. They cleanse theirbodies by lowering the refrigerator, stepping atop it, and raisingthemselves into the shower. Some people prefer to use auto wash. Whenthe police come into your building, you must place your hands intoyellow circles on the wall, unless you are auto-washing, of course.Besson's vision of the future is more unique, creative and colorfulthan anything else to enter the cinemas save George Lucas' most recentepisodes in a galaxy far, far away. Alas, the people live in dangeroustimes. Every 5,000 years, a black hole opens and a creature of pureevil enters our universe. Technically, it should be a white hole thatsends it our way. In any case, if this evil reaches Earth before theFifth Element activates the weapon against it, all life will bedestroyed. To the rescue ride the Mondoshawans. They possess the four elementalstones and Leeloo (Milla Jovovich), the Fifth Element, but evil has anally this time. Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) has sidedwith the evil being, although what he stands to gain is a mystery. Heuses the unwitting Mangalores as his allies, and it is them who ambushthe Mondoshawan craft as it approaches Earth. However, Leelooanticipated difficulty. With the help of Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis)and Priest Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm), she embarks for a distantrendezvous where the fate of every living being depends on the outcome.Bruce Willis plays a friendlier, less abrasive, more stable hero thanis his norm. Willis built his considerable fame playing everymanheroes, and he still carries that spirit with him as Dallas. Heprojects sadness far more effectively and believably than he does in"Die Hard with a Vengeance," and does so by muting his acting. TommyLister and Brion James play their roles as president and militaryleader with panache, and Holm meets all expectations as PriestCornelius. The highest praise, however, belongs to Jovovich. She is able to dowhat few actors dare dream, namely create her own accent. While Leeloohas unfathomable strength and mind-blowing physicals skills, bulletsstill hurt and she is vulnerable in a world that bombards her senses inways she never could have imagined. Jovovich has fun with Leeloolearning new words. She has the exuberance of an exploring child andemotes flawlessly in a language nobody in the audience understands.Plus, she can shed tears as well as anybody. There is no weak moment inher performance.Despite the fantastic name and distinctive appearance, Jean-BaptisteEmmanuel Zorg does not end the day among the classic villains. Theshortcomings are not because Oldman acts poorly. They come from the wayhe and Besson created the character. Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel is notimposing or diabolical. Oldman elicits some laughs, which is a strongemphasis of the movie. However, he talks so strangely that many ofZorg's lines are difficult to understand. The action is awesome. Besson peppers it with reminders that none of itshould be taken seriously. Many of Leeloo's fighting moves are purelycomical and Dallas' winning attack in the climatic battle is purely forlaughs. At one point he is no more than eight feet from threeMangalores and they all miss him with their fully automatic weapons.Despite its goofiness, the action quality is top notch. The best scene is a comedy-of-errors routine in Dallas' apartment. Hemust deal with multiple groups of people without everybody elseknowing. He makes use of every gadget he can before, of course, thepolice arrive. It is a scene reminiscent of the old time comedies thatwould often Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy. In a way, itepitomizes what Besson's movie is all about, and that is pure fun.
