A great little action movie

This review is from: The Eagle (DVD) I didn't have high expectations so the movie ended up being a great surprise... a believable storyline .... and full of great visuals, scenes and special effects.

Just OK!

The movie has a fairly good opening in my opinion, a rather dull middleand a predictable ending. The problem with it for me is the same problem I'm seeing with a lot ofthe new action films. The cameras stays very tight, action is allblurred and close up, so you can't see what's going on. The sound trackis all keyed up so you won't be concentrating on the errors in theaction. (Which you can't really see anyway) Golly, give me the days ofgood stuntmen back again.I liked the opening half hour or so, but the middle is so much like aNorth American Indian film you lose all sense of the time period. Iagree with the former reviewers comments, Gee, if the Britains livedlike this why bother with them.I prefer the mini-series "Rome" to this any day.The theater chains are also destroying the movie going experience as Ihave to agonize over 15 minutes of commercials before the main featurestarts.

Excellent adaptation

First off, Sutcliff wrote a book for teen readers and the movie wasdone in such a way that I felt comfortable bringing my teenage son tosee it. There was violence, owing to the times, but not graphic likemost movies these days. In fact, people were killed or executed withmost of the gory parts off screen or to the side so you didn't see theactual act. There was no sex or nudity, which for me is a nice changewhen I want to see a feature film for the story and not have thesescenes thrown in for that type of audience.I thoroughly enjoyed Rosemary Sutcliff's adventure novel and I feltthis movie was true to the book, with a few changes that actually madethe story better. The story is an intelligent historical adventure bringing the viewerinto an unknown world in Northern Scotland. It depicts accurately therelation between the conquering Romans and their subjugated Brittonsand Celts. We see Roman period soldiers accurately represented andnative Picts as they may have been (without many historical records toverify their way of life). The movie is also about a friendship that builds between two men fromopposite sides of the conflict and the bonds that build despite theirdifferences in culture. There are lots of battles, beautiful scenery, and excitement. The movie follows Sutcliff's hunt for the 9th Legion Eagle, lost beyondHadrian's Wall in the the mysterious land of the Picts, ruthless tribesof barbarians in present day Scotland. Despite some recent evidencethat the 9th Legion was never destroyed in Scotland, the story iscaptivating and despite being fiction has a real authentic feel.I loved this movie and hope for more like it. 10/10

Channing Tatum CANT act!!!!

This review is from: The Eagle (Amazon Instant Video) Jamie Bell does a great job. Rest of the cast too. Channing Tatum however was completely unbelievable and tried so hard to look macho and manly. He is still just the little A&F model who best fits in silly chick-flicks. The ending was such a let down and was completely rushed. This movie was not good at all.

An intimate kind of epic

This is not a big sweeping sage, but then, it does not need to be. It is the story of two unlikely allies: a Roman soldier and an oppressed Briton, who form an alliance after the Roman rescues the other man and takes him on a dangerous journey north of Hadrian's wall to find the gold standard, the eagle, which was lost in a battle decades earlier. Honor, bravery, and friendship are explored in this adventure story. There are some rough parts which may be too much for younger viewers, but it is not graphic enough to warrant an R rating.

A Good Action Film

I have not read Rosemary Sutcliff's book (The Eagle of the Ninth) but I understand that the book is more of a mystery whereas The Eagle is an action film. Understandably, lovers of the book will be disappointed but, of course, translating a book to the screen is rarely satisfying. I found that The Eagle was better than I expected. The opening of the film, set in the reign of Antoninus Pius (around 140 CE), gives a gritty picture of Roman camp life. Marcus Aquila has arrived in Britain to command the same cohort commanded by his father, who is responsible for the loss of an eagle standard. The film wavers a bit in being precise about the organization of a cohort and a legion but this is not critical to enjoy the film. The day-to-day life in camp is nicely depicted with the high point begin a battle with the Britons who have captured the members of a Roman patrol. The discipline of the Romans is nicely portrayed as they form a testudo formation to rescue their comrades. The costumes are not bad but reflect more of the Hollywood version of ancient dress. The soldiers have the correct footwear but the armor is segmented leather. Spoilers below. Marcus is wounded and recovers at a villa owned by his uncle, nicely played by Donald Sutherland. During a gladiatorial combat, Marcus sees a salve named Esca who refuses to fight and saves his life, becoming his slave in turn. Marcus decides to bring back the Eagle to restore the good name of his father and sets of with Esca acting as an interpreter. They make their way into the Scottish highlands where they are captured by the Seal People, who paint themselves a gray-blue. Esca turns the tables on Marcus by claiming the Roman is his slave. The Seal People look more like American Indians by their clothing and wearing bones for decoration. End of spoilersChanning Tatum is well cast as Marcus. He is the very image of a Roman soldier, brooding over his family's loss of honor and conveying a strong sense of loyalty to his soldiers. Jamie Bell also fills his part very well conveying Esca's reluctant but growing admiration of Marcus. Mark Strong makes a brief appearance, this time not as a villain, as one of the Roman soldiers that survived the massacre of the cohort and went native. Overall, The Eagle is a good action film that keeps your interest. It is beautifully photographed and well acted.

Understated to a Flaw

THE EAGLE is based on quasi-historic events written by Rosemary Sutcliff in her novel 'The Eagle of the Ninth' and adapted for the screen by Jeremy Brock. In the hands of director Kevin Macdonald the re-enactment of the Roman wars in Britain become more a study of relationships and moral duty and that is probably the reason the film comes across as a rather quiet, contemplative piece rather than an epic. That is not a bad decision and were it not for the lack of a strong actor in the lead role, it likely would have been a theatrical success. The story begins in 140 AD in Rome where young Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum), the son of the soldier who allowed the Eagle symbol of Roman victory to be lost in a battle in Britain in 120 AD, becomes a centurion: he asks to be stationed in Britain where he promises his father's departed spirit that he will restore honor to his family by regaining the eagle. Though advised against such a futile mission (the Roman legion south of Hadrian's wall has been unsuccessful in conquering the Britons), Marcus is determined. He is more a devoted son and humanist: he prevents the killing of a young Briton, Esca (Jamie Bell), in the gladiator arena and to repay the debt of saving his life Esca agrees to be Marcus' slave despite the fact that he loathes Rome and Marcus for the damages Romans inflicted on his people. The two men set out to Britain where Marcus assumes command of the tired and disenchanted Roman legion, but with the support of Lutorius (Denis O'Hare) and because of wise decisions about strategy his legionnaires grow to respect him. Marcus' courage results in his being injured in a confrontation with the rogue warriors and he is transported to a hospital with Esca at his side. At the hospital he is tended by his uncle Aquila (Donald Sutherland) who assures his return to health and informs him that Rome has honored his bravery in battle and has rewarded him with an honorable discharge. But Marcus is determined to restore his father's good name and sets off to the north with Esca to gain the eagle. On the way Marcus and Esca become close and Esca provides leadership abilities when the two confront the Seal People lead by the Seal Prince (Tahar Rahim). In a turn of events the Seals capture Marcus and Esca and to save Marcus' life, Esca tells the Seals that Marcus is his slave - a reversal of roles that indicates the relationship between these two men. Once the eagle is discovered and recovered Marcus and Esca flee, Marcus gives Esca his freedom but Esca stays with his new friend, encountering the last of the lost Ninth including Guern (Mark Strong) and Marcus is reassured of his father's bravery and valor and the story speeds along to the expected end. The film is shot in Scotland and Hungary and the scenery is the star as captured by Anthony Dod Mantle. The original musical score is by Atli Örvarsson and adds considerably to the atmosphere of this rather dark film. Jamie Bell is excellent as Esca, finessing the transition from hateful slave to respectful freed friend. Channing Tatum is rather monotoned and monotonous as Marcus, a role that would have been better suited in the hands of a well-schooled actor rather than an Abercrombie & Fitch model. But the director makes the most of Tatum's presence and the story is not impaired by his presence: it is just not enhanced by it. THE EAGLE fares well on DVD with subtitles provided for the Gaelic conversations with the Seals. It may not be a great movie, but it is fairly solid entertainment. Grady Harp, June 11

Pretty Good

This review is from: The Eagle (Unrated Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Last year I watched a movie called Centurion, which told what (apparently) happened to the ill-fated 9th Legion when they disappeared beyond Hadrian's Wall into the depths of primitive Scotland. The Eagle tells a different story - Marcus, invalided out of the Roman army with a leg wound, nips off beyond Hardian's Wall into the depths of primitive Scotland to find out what (apparently) happened to the ill-fated 9th Legion. Not the same at all.To be fair, although both are drawn from the same basic source material, the two stories are not the same - Marcus' journey as far more of a Roman buddy movie, although "buddy" is perhaps straining things a bit. Marcus (Channing Tatum) is accompanied by his slave Eska (Jamie Bell), and there is a subtext of honour, obligation, and trust running through the film as the two of them go into the wilds to try to recover the lost Eagle of the 9th, and find out what happened to Marcus' father..The Eagle is filmed on location in Scotland (which looks very Scottish) and Hungary (which often doesn't). Though it isn't as bleak as Centurion, it still looks pretty cold and wet and miserable much of the time. There's lots of action, much of it bloody, a couple of other well-known faces (Mark Strong, who isn't in it very much, and who sports an incongruous American accent, for instance), and vast numbers of Hungarians in supporting roles and as extras. The script isn't bad, and it's quite entertaining.

Keeping History Right

This was a very good movie, I really like the 1st 1/2 hour. I'm givingthis an 7 because I want to see more movies of battles from early AD.However General Cornelius Fuscus who revenge his friends death OppiusSabinus "Roman Governor". Was killed and lost the eagle year 86-AD. Theeagal was later recovered by Laberius Maximus. The truth is better than fiction as there were real battles that wereamazing. I understand this is base on the book The eagle of the ninth,a fiction book, as a producer why wast your time and money on somethingthat was not real. 300 was base on real events and people, with thatfoundation made it a block-buster. If the eagle was base on a realstory it too would been a block-buster.

For someone who does not like this genre this was a very exciting and action filled movie. Good but little slow in parts. I say B

"Please help me regain my families honor." 20 years after a legion leadby his father disappears along with the prized Golden Eagle, MarcusAquila (Tatum) decides to take it upon himself to retrieve the Eagleand restore honor to his father's name. Not being a big fan of these"Centurian Epics" this is another one I was not looking that forward toseeing. Ten minutes in I realized that I was in the wrong. While it didtend to drag in a few parts, for the most part this was a very actionfilled enjoyable movie. Parts "Spartacus" mixed with "Gladiator" with adash of "300" made this an enjoyable experience, especially for someonewho does not really enjoy this genre. Not too much else to say about itbesides if you like these type of movies you will love this one. Iflike me you are not that into these kind you will still enjoy it verymuch. Overall much better then expected, I would recommend it. I giveit a B.Would I watch again? - I think I actually would *Also try - Centurian &Troy

A SOMEWHAT GOOD SWORD AND SANDALS TALE

This tale is based on the supposed disappearance of the Spanish 9th Legion in Scotland (thought more historians seem to believe said legion was lost in the Eastern Provinces) in which the son of its commander tries to discover the mystery of its whereabouts. Led along by a slave whose life he saved they cross through Hadrian's Wall in search of a mystery with a somewhat obvious ending. It's your standard sword and sandal picture with some fairly good action scenes though they aren't always accurate in how a Roman Legion would have fought but go with it, I suppose. The ending didn't feel right for the main character and seemed more like an excuse to end on a buddy picture. This film was partly photographed in Scotland and said film was adapted from a novel by Rosemary Sutcliff. HISTORICAL ACCURACY: B minus to B; ACTION SCENES: B to B plus; CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B minus to B; STORY/PLOTTING: B minus to B; OVERALL GRADE: B minus to B; WHEN WATCHED: end of July 2011.

its alright but slow and nothing special

it started out decent and went downhill fast, the movie was verypredictable and you can see everything coming a mile away. the worstthing about the movie is all the actors accents. it would of been muchbetter if they actually tried not to all sound the same as they do inevery movie that i seen them in before. Channing Tatum always soundsthe same in every movie, the same for Donald Sutherland and the samefor the rest of the cast. there suppose to be Romans and not peoplefrom the 20th century. if they actually had non American accents thenit might of been more fun. its just hard to get into the movie with theway everyone talks. I'm surprised i didn't hear Brooklyn and Jerseyaccents in this film. the movies slow and has a lot of flashbacks, tomany for me to handle i don't think its anything great. best to watchthe movie after you had a few drinks.

Museum Uniforms & Miscasting - Details!

Remember that attention to details is the difference between good+ and whatever lies below. Props example: In this case we have a Northern Briton remote Roman garrison around 140 AD and the soldiers all wearing the IDENTICAL (mass production techniques came sooner to the Western world than anyone knew) armored uniforms that coincidentally had zero markings showing any use and nary a spot of dust (must be those airtight containers). Casting example: Casting director totally miscast this film besides a lack of authentic period creating effort on the part of the actors who instead gave us their world wide accents and appearances just acted more like tourists in a 21st century cafe in Rome, but the prime example was Sutherland whose "acting" consists of imitating himself. The same physical mannerisms, facial gestures, head turning, dialogue and enunciation that he presents in all his movies. Battle scenes: The formation the soldiers used against the Brits would have been more effective against arrows or calvary not a mass of enemy that outnumbered them 10 to 1. Anybody who has been to an European soccer match would know that these few soldiers with shields in front of them while plodding a couple of hundred yards would have been crushed by the mass of rabid enemy fans. Battle scenes 2: Brits that, unfortunately, looked more like northeastern American natives with sword fighting skills as good as the Romans was out-of-control imagineering by the director. Storyline example: Too formula driven e.g. son defends family honor; treks across hundreds of miles to coincidentally come right to the location of a lost metal eagle; steals it back and despite being wounded rides hundreds of miles back mostly on horseback but for some not clear reason was not able to outdistance the on-foot Brits. They must have been spending their entire lives just training to be ultra ultra marathoners. Finally, only to have his now faithful slave within days round up some ex-Roman soldiers hidden in hundreds of square miles of wilderness to again defend the eagle. Too much.

A soldier and a slaves quest to restore a tarnished name becomes dangerous as they trek through uncharted terrority

This movie was all around awful and flat out offencive. The "thrilling"action scenes were accompanied with cheesy writing and poor acting. Theparts that were not laughable in merit almost drove me to turn off thetelevision.Being a descendant of the clan depicted in the film, I felt utterlyappalled at the way my ancestors were depicted. We were made out to behideous, evil savages bent on preserving the material possessions westole years before. Is this how Celtic people are perceived?! Watchingthis I could not believe the director was of Celtic origin. His proRoman propaganda was disgusting and his omission of historical evidencewhen making horrible claims was infuriating. When the Celtic tribekilled the young child I felt violated. It felt like a piece of extremeracism was being eaten up as enjoyment. The way this movie presents theidea of the "victim" is as laughable as it is ironic. We are meant tosympathize with greedy imperialist Romans bent on conquering and ethniccleansing Northern Europe. We do not make movies sympathizing withNazi's or slave owners so why is it okay for a movie to sympathize withpeople who carried out genocide on the Celtic people? This was racismat its finest. The fact that this movie was rated as high as it was isdepressing.Aside from the sheer racist depictions of the Celtic people, this moviedoes not pass as historical fiction, action, or even drama. In short, Ido not find one redeeming quality in this movie, and ,unless you wantto waste 2 hours of your life on this horrible excuse for a movie, don't bother downloading or renting it.

Eagle of the Ninth

This review is from: The Eagle (DVD) I read the book only in the last year so I enjoyed the movie very much. I do wish they had left the chariot race in the main. But it was good that it featured in the deleted scenes.

badajoz-1 2012-05-17 11:09:13

Average but interesting

Based on a favourite book from childhood, the film is fairly faithfulbut does not make the most of its source material. Most of the UScriticism of the film seems to be about Channing Tatum and his slippingaccent - do they not get the nuance? Yanks are playing Romans, nottheir slaves a la 'Spartacus' and so do not come out of the film toobadly! Wonder why? Afghanistan and Iraq drift through the metaphor, thickies! The acting is Okay, but Tatum and Bell never really convincethroughout, and they have to carry the movie. The direction is dreamilyalmost soporific as McDonald tries to portray his homeland (Scotland)in all its moods, and the narrative drive suffers as a result. Thescript is a bit iffy - mainstream without threatening to stretch itsaudience. However, the faultlines within the story to give the edge ofthrills affect appreciation. At about 140AD, the Romans gave the Scotsa good pasting and built the Antonine Wall (Clyde to the Forth), andhad ventured north some sixty years earlier to give the Caledonians areal good hiding at Mons Graupius, so all the bullshit about no-one cansurvive north of Hadrian's Wall is a little over the top. The plotfollows the deeds of a wounded young soldier and his slave (Tatum andBell) to recover the 'Eagle of the Ninth' which was lost in Caledoniasome twenty years earlier (an historical mystery) when the Ninth Legionmarched north never to return. A terrible omission from the book (and amajor plot downer) is the cover story for the two's journey - Tatum'scharacter is an oculist who wanders from village to village curing eyedisease, thus able to travel freely. In the film a Roman and aBrigantian just wander off into the Highlands, with the slave whohonours his master instead of slitting his throat! The film starts tocome apart when the holders of the Eagle (The northern Seal People, more like Magua and the Huron in appearance) take the two into theircamp and the role of slave and master are inter-changed! The lastthirty minutes are the obligatory chase when the two heroes steal theEagle back. Not that there is no historical background for the recoveryof Eagles (Germania AD9) and blue painted Picts (Severus' campaignsbefore AD211), but it just does not work well enough or seem differentenough from such recent stuff as the very poor 'Centurion.' Good effortbut it just does not work well enough on screen

Not brilliant but an entertaining way to spend an evening

I went into this movie not knowing what to expect, and in the end I wasrather pleased with it. Beautiful cinematography, great fight scenes,an interesting story . . . The movie also pays incredible attention todetail and is not afraid of a little dirt; one small thing that stoodout to me is when they're eating dinner at the uncle's house, and it'skind of dark in there. Movies are always trying to convince us that afew candles light a house just as well as modern electric lights, butthis one reminds us that no, they're candles. It's little things likethat I found compelling: the characters acquire dirt and grime as theytravel, the costumes and buildings are quite detailed, the Britons upin the north speak Gaelic and nothing but Gaelic. Often in movies withforeign languages, the characters will speak that foreign language fora few lines then switch into English. But the Britons keep up theirGaelic, and they speak it smoothly and fluently, too.I really liked Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, too. Tatum seems to betrying to speak very properly and it's rather odd, but he's good as astoic young man who wants to be honorable and is tired of spending hisentire life being chastised for a mistake that he did not make. JamieBell is rather fantastic as the slave who has every reason to hate Romeexcept for his growing respect for his Roman master; he's unpredictableand tortured and terribly interesting to watch. It's not a perfect movie--sometimes I wasn't sure that it knew whatmessage it was trying to convey--but generally I liked it. I willprobably purchase it when it comes out.

Great - what I was hoping for

Good: Exciting, violent, good acting and characters who I cared aboutand did not want to die. Fun (not funny). Not too much shaky camerastuff. Strategy/tactics alright (possibly not perfect but I am not sureand I haven't played enough Rome: Total war to know the difference)Good atmosphere. Good acting - importantly the heroes looked believableas dangerous soldier types that could kill people (even if one of themused to be Billy Elliot. His boxing dad would have been proud). Lovelyscenery. Music was good (not last of the Mohicans style good, possiblyas good as LA confidential) Appropriately dubious ethics/morals (I'mnot always a fan of that but I was for this)Bad: Action relied too much on close up nonsense action rather thanreal choreographed moves taking place (as others have pointed out). This denies it its 9th star for me. It is not Gladiator! The story/plotetc is not on that level, nor is the scale of the battles, but then whowatched this expecting that? But as a result it does not get its 10thstar. Some, rather insignificant (for the sake of enjoying the film)historical inaccuracies. Who cares that orthopaedic knee reconstructionprobably was not that good back in AD 120. There were probably othersbut I did not go to see some educational video. Perhaps the middle wenton a bit? I thought it was acceptable. It did not kill the atmosphereanyway and I suspect that was half the game.So based on the trailer I got what I hoped I would get. Not gladiator, but not ruined by any dumb decisions either (eg they did not cast DavidTennant and Colin Farell, or have one guy kill his way through an armyof people using leftover food, or some totally retarded plot vehicle,or something completely impossible, or a million other things thatother people have ruined perfectly good films with in the past). I wishthe action was a bit better, but loads of films are cheap like thisthese days. I suspect the choreographers that can make good actionsequences must be charging obscene amounts for it, or maybe theinsurance is unaffordable.Another random point to make: There were no lines for any women at all.The most one ever heard from a woman was laughter. Oh well.

A Journey I won't be taking again

¨How can a piece of metal mean so much to you? -The eagle is not apiece of metal. The eagle is Rome.¨ The Eagle is based on a historicalnovel written by Rosemary Sutcliff called The Eagle of the Ninth(1954). It's a fiction adventure novel, but it is based on some truefacts (The Ninth Legion really did disappear around the 2nd Century andthe Wall of Hadrian was built to protect the Romans from the Scottishtribes). Director Kevin Macdonald brings this novel to the big screen, and in my opinion it is one of his weakest films to date. I reallyenjoyed his previous two films: State of Play and The Last King ofScotland, but this one really disappointed me with its slow pace andlack of a good leading performance. One of the main issues in myopinion is that in his previous movies Macdonald got the casting right, but in The Eagle he was lacking that charismatic lead performance thatsay Forrest Whitaker gave in The Last King of Scotland. Jeremy Brock, who also worked with Macdonald in the past, adapted the screenplay forThe Eagle and since I never read The Eagle of the Ninth I can't say howfaithful this film is to the novel. My main critique of The Eaglerelies on the fact that I never really connected with the movie; thepace was really slow and I was waiting for the film to pick up at somepoint, but it never really did until the very end and by that time Iwanted the movie to be over. I kept on dozing off while watching thisfilm and was hugely disappointed with the pace. I wanted the film toend right after I had seen the first 15 minutes. The story takes place around 140 AD when Britain was being ruled by theRoman Empire. It's been twenty years since the Ninth Legion hasdisappeared in the Scottish highlands and lost the Golden Eagle, whichwas an emblem of honor for Rome. The loss of the emblem has been adisgrace for the Roman Empire. As a result of the defeat they had tobuild the Hadrian Wall in order to keep the barbarian tribes away. Nowa young centurion named Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) has been sent toone of the lasts forts in Britain. He happens to be the son of thedefeated Commander of the Ninth Legion, and dreams of someday restoringhis father's name. In order to do so, he will need to head north pastthe walls and into the uncharted highlands. The Romans are scared ofpassing the walls because they know these savages are dangerous. Afterexperiencing an injury in battle and retreating to his uncle's villa,Marcus is convinced he has to try to bring the Eagle back to theRomans. His Uncle Aquila (Donald Sutherland) tries to convince him notto, but Marcus is decided to take the risk. His only companion is aBriton slave who he has just saved named Esca (Jamie Bell). Escadespises the Romans, but he owes his life to Marcus and is foreverindebted to him as his slave. Esca is Marcus's only hope because heknows the world outside of the walls and can communicate with some ofthe tribes. Together they set out on an impossible mission to retrievethe golden Eagle and restore his father's honor. The story is actually pretty interesting, but I actually failed toconnect with the characters in the movie. The pace is really slow andthe performance from the cast was just average. I don't think this wasthe right role for Tatum; at least I didn't see him as a Romancenturion. The savages were also a bit over characterized. Mark Strongplays a villain once again and he is pretty convincing as Guern, one ofthe leaders of a savage tribe. The scenery is really beautiful, but asI said before I kept on dozing off due to the pace and lack of action. The chemistry between the two lead characters was OK, but I felt therecould have been more done with their relationship. These two guys comefrom totally different backgrounds, they have opposing views of theworld, but somehow they manage to get over their differences and we seehow these two men who should be enemies end up becoming friends. JamieBell was pretty convincing in his portrayal of the Briton slave. He'scome a long way from his Billy Elliot days. There is not much more Ican say about this movie, it just drags for long periods of times. Theaction scenes are well choreographed, but they are too few and farspread apart. It is more of a road trip between two differentindividuals who come together along the journey. The problem is thatit's a journey I wouldn't want to be taking again.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/
