Dominic Cooper saves the day

"In the wake of the recent developments of the Arab Spring, theprospect of the release of a film about the doppelganger of SaddamHussein's son struck me as intriguing. Coupled with the publicizedapplication of sophisticated technology in its production, and theknowledge that is was chiefly filmed in Malta – including the promiseof a cameo appearance by our very own alma mater – The Devil's Double'slure radiated in a gold to rival that of its own poster. The film is based on Latif Yahia's autobiographical novel of the samename and, given the subject matter at hand, I can see how Lee Tamahoricould have found it a challenge to direct this. {...}" For the rest ofmy review visit:litflick.wordpress.com/2011/10/15/the-devils-double-2011/

From America without love.

While driving through the city I was slapped in the face by a hugeposter of a golden guy sitting in a throne holding two AK 47s. WOW. Ifthe movie was as good as the poster it was a must see as far as I wasconcerned. The movie in question was The Devil's double, the story ofan Iraqi army lieutenant forced to become the body double or bulletcatcher for Saddam Husseins eldest son and heir apparent Uday saddamHussein. I was hooked! The movie reminds me of Scarface with this sortof golden glow, full of action, anger and atrocity it's definitely abig screen movie and really looks like a Hollywoood blockbuster. Bothof the main roles are played by an English actor called Dominic Cooperwith French actress Ludivine Sagnier as love interest to both Latif andUday, notable roles include Philip Quast as Saddam Hussein, MimounOaissa as Ali one of Uday's henchmen, Raad Rawi as Munem Hammed Latif'strainer, Mem Ferda as Saddam's best friend and food taster KamelHannah, great work all round and great direction from Lee Tamahori whobrings his action background to great force here. It's pretty wellrounded, great story even though not historically accurate, greatacting, directing, cinematography and production design. Where did theyfind those '80s shiny suits??? I want one!! Oh and a Porsche too!!

The Devil's Double.

The Devil's Double, is a film about a man forced to become someone elseto stop or save his boss from assassination attempts or boringassignments. The boss is son of Dicator Saddam Hussein, Uday Hussein. Ireally liked the movie, it was fast and flashy with great music andbrilliant acting, the lead actor is Dominic Cooper, he plays both UdayHussein and his body double Latif Yahia, his portrayal of Uday inparticualr is just amazing! He can go from zero to maniac in twoseconds! It's well worth watching, I saw it at the Rio Film Festival, Ireally want to bring my friends to see it with me, it's the kind ofmovie you can watch over and over again. I give it 10/10 with abullet!

Ughh

I went into this movie in the same manner as one might walk into amovie like Eli Roth's Hostel. I could guess that it would be a s*itfilm, but curiosity brought me to the theater where i watched it. Theonly positives I can say are the production design and sets along withthe performance of Cooper as two separate parties altogether which ingeneral is no easy task also given who he is playing. This movie has aconfusing plot, or it did for me at least simply because I don'tconcern myself with info coming in and out of Baghdad. The movie isslow and dull most of the time. The script was poor and didn't haveCooper saying anything intelligent or notably interesting for eithercharacter as when he is playing Uday he just goes around saying the "c"word a lot and trying to bang everything in his sights along withrelentless and unneeded murder. As the double, he just looks around ateverything with a blank look on his face and cannot accept his fate asbeing Uday's b**ch. There are several disturbing scenes in this filmthat would make the average guy myself included wince and I cannotimagine how someone can consider this entertainment when this movie isbased on a true story. I highly suggest everyone steers clear of thismovie and avoid it because you won't be walking out of the theatrewaiting in anticipation for a blu ray release but instead may end up intherapy trying to wash all the images of brutality out of your head. One of the worst films of the year and one of the worst films I've evervoluntarily sat through. I'm not sure how Lee Tamahori went fromdirecting the James Bond film Die Another Day which in my view wasn'tas bad as everyone else thought it was to directing a biographical filmlike this, but I can only hope his next project is more uplifting inevery sense of the word .

Struggle between the life of a man's family and serving a evil tyrant

The trailer to this movie was intriguing, now was this movie was greatas the trailer made it seem. Not really but it's still a pretty darngood movie that shows how evil and sadistic a person can get inhistory. The movie starts out really interesting and the acting by theactor that plays two characters was almost superb. It was amazing tosee an actor play two completely different characters, each very wellacted as the other. The story is this, and yes this is based on thetrue story not sure how much of this movie is true. But a lot of thestuff happening in this movie was plausible. Anyways there is this guynamed Latif Yahia who wants to serve his country but is forced to servea evil sadistic tyrant Uday Hussein. Who is almost the epitome of evilbecause of his very corrupt actions and his crime towards humanity. Themain struggle in this movie is how Latif and his decisions, how heeither has to serve Uday and help him in his corrupt and evil ways orsee the death of his family. And the constant struggle between thesetwo options is the main center of the plot. The problem with this moviethough is how it draws you in for a bit over an hour but start to loseit's edge a bit into the movie. It just seemed like the movie waslonger than it had to be, the plot isn't convoluted at all. And for asimple story as this, the movie just seemed to be drawn out after awhile. But overall it's a movie that is worth seeing, since the shockvalue of it all. How one man can cause so much suffering while anotheris forced to watch and help the man behind the suffering.7.6/10

Entertaining, if deeply flawed, film

Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper) is a patriotic Iraqi soldier who finds himself brought in by Uday Hussein (also Cooper), a former classmate and son of Saddam to whom he bears an uncanny resemblance. Uday wants him to become his body double to protect him from potentially dangerous situations, and make appearances while Uday indulges in women, drink and drugs. Latif refuses, only to be tortured and beaten until he agrees. After undergoing some minor plastic surgery and given some fake teeth, Latif shadows Uday and realises he is an absolute psychopath, raping and murdering women as well as torturing anyone who challenges or opposes him. Uday's mistress Sarrab (Ludivine Sagnier), tired of Uday's unpredictable nature and wild behaviour, shows interest in Latif, and the two start a dangerous affair. The story of Latif Yahia has been dubbed dubious by various investigative journalists due to inconsistencies in his stories and claims by associates of Uday Hussein's that he never used body doubles. That aside, it makes for a quite fascinating story, if a not wholly believable one. Instead of fashioning a serious film about one of the key figures in the troubled and violent recent history of Iraq, director Lee Tamahori (whose recent films include the shitty Bond film Die Another Day (2002) and Nicolas Cage vehicle Next (2007)) has made a gangster film. It plays out like Scarface in Baghdad, and is full of violence, drugs and women, and all but ignores the political and social aspects. It's the main problem with the film, as although this has the potential to be a very good film, the execution is that seen a thousand times before in the gangster genre. In the hands of someone like David Fincher or Michael Mann, this could have been something much more. However, the film has a trump card in the form of lead Dominic Cooper, who juggles dual roles with apparent ease. I've never been his biggest fan (he's hardly been stretched in his career), but he shows here that he has leading man qualities. Although his portrayal of Uday is wildly over-the-top to the point of a cartoon character sometimes, it's clearly as the director intended, and he switches from the brooding Latif to the psychopathic Uday effortlessly. So whether you believe the story or not (I don't), it makes for an entertaining, if deeply flawed, film, and Uday Hussein proves a terrifying madman, especially given that he was very real (before US forces killed him in 2003).

Liberals on Parade

Funky Americanese martial arts period piece.Liberal Democrat Cooperstamps his trademark well & truly.Things progress along nicely with astandard plot line.Camera-work is a bit dodgy but who cares. The fightsequences are masterfully turned out.Definitely worth a look if youlike this genre. This movie has enough blood and action to maintain theviewer's interest though because of its technical shortcomings can behard to follow at times visually. Lots of dark sequences contributingto the general mayhem with a hokey soundtrack. The dialog is somewhatstilted, but who cares, this is ultimate fun to watch. Cooper has a longtrack record for promoting wickedly masterful Liberal Democracy ,onecan only equate the fight sequences with high ballet. This is liberalfare but still serves up the usual dollop of action.

There but for the grace of...

THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE (2011) is an outstanding movie but don't expect, because of the title, a conventional horror story. It is a horror storyall right, but it is the story of Saddam Hussein's son, Uday, who inhis madness takes what he wants from life and kills at will. The movieearns an 18 Rating because of the graphic violence, sex and drugsscenes, and strong language throughout. But none of that, in myopinion, is gratuitous simply to draw the box office crowds becausethere is a moral in the story. It paints a hideous portrait of what canhappen when the wrong people are in power and how ordinary, innocentpeople (man, woman, and child) suffer under their rule. There but forthe grace of God...Uday Hussain is living the life of a superstar but he needs bodyguardsto protect him. Hardly surprising as he trawls the streets, pullingyoung girls off the pavements and doing what he wants with them backhome, after which he has their bodies dumped on waste land. He wants adouble. After all, his daddy, Saddam Hussein, has a double.Unfortunately for Latif Yahia he looks just like Uday after a bit ofplastic surgery. And there is no escape. He cooperates or his familywill die.I don't know how much truth there is in this story but this is a movieand a good one too.

Cooper shines in amazing dual performances!

'THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five) A brutally violent biopic based on a book written by a man, named LatifYahia, who claims to have been a body double for Saddam Hussein's son,Uday. Dominic Cooper stars impressively in the dual lead roles (asLatif and Uday). The film was directed by Lee Tamahori (who's most wellknown for directing B action films like 'DIE ANOTHER DAY', 'NEXT' and'XXX: STATE OF THE UNION') and written by Michael Thomas. There hasbeen a lot of criticism of the film (as well as the book) for beingmore fiction than fact but the filmmakers have admitted that a lot ofthe film's details have been fabricated. Regardless the film isentertaining as well as very interesting.Latif is introduced as an army lieutenant called in to Sadam's palacein Baghdad at the request of Uday. Once there Uday gives Latif theultimatum that he either commit to living at the palace with him and behis body double or have his family killed by Sadam's soldiers. Latifreluctantly agrees and is quickly drawn in to a world of madness. Udayis sadistic and insane and takes whatever he wants, much to theembarrassment of his father. Latif is an honorable soldier dedicated todefending Iraq, but not at this cost, and he is constantly torn withwhat he must do.The movie is very hard to watch at times; it's filled with torture, rape and sadistic madness at times. It's also very interesting andcompelling, if not believable though. Tamahori does an impressive jobdirecting, especially considering his previous film efforts, and thescript is well written but it's Cooper that steals the show! Coopermakes the movie with his amazing dual performances and gives the filmjust the right amount of madness and humanity it needs. Without him themovie probably wouldn't have been nearly as memorable. It has it'sflaws and is not for the squeamish but the movie is worth a watch formost.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lBzdmfUfA

Very Cheesy

This is another case of interesting premise clowned up into anembarrassing final product. What could have been a truly horrifying ortouching story was unnecessarily accessorized with too much fluff.Ironically, during the Q & A at Sundance the producers mentioned thatthey fought hard for the rights of this story against some bigHollywood studios because there were confident in their unique creativevision. Sadly, this film turned out to be the poster child of clichéHollywood influence.I'm unsure why the director/screenwriter had so little faith in theappeal of the actual events and felt they had to dramatize the story tomake it more "entertaining". Instead of higher entertainment value theygot cheesiness: the dialogues were cheesy; the characters were cheesy;the scene where Latif and his love interest rode away on horses intothe sunset -> CHEESY. Nothing about the movie felt genuine. Even theirattempt to humanize the characters - Uday is not just a psychopath buta troubled (borderline comical) child who had daddy issues - seemedcalculated and unconvincing. Then they made the mistake of making theprotagonist Mr. Perfect. Latif did all the right things: He was forcedto accepted a job of great danger in order to protect his family; Hedespised Uday and everything Uday stood for; He stood firmly and nevergave in to the temptations of luxury and pleasure; He fell in love withUday's mistress, but even that was an act of saving her suffering soul. His decisions were too easy and his moral strength is God-like. Inconclusion, he is a hopelessly two-dimensional character. The producers also said "We wanted to make this film the nextScarface". I reacted by laughing out loud, presumptuously assuming theywere being sarcastic. Turns out it was no joke. I am not sure how theyequated Scarface with unique and creative; I am not criticizing itsentertainment value but Scarface has Hollywood written all over it.It's a shame really. I'm sure Latif's story would have made a greatfilm without all the noise.

One of the best movies and performances of the year. A must see that will leave you talking. Oscars take note! I say A+

"Uday has chosen you, you belong to him." This is the true story ofLatif Yahia (Cooper) and how he was hand picked by Uday Hussein(Cooper) to be his body double. Latif is stuck in the middle ofbecoming someone he hates and getting killed by saying no. This isanother type of movie that will not get the audience that it deserves.Cooper, who plays a duel role, give quite possibly the year's bestacting performance and is deserving of at least an Oscar nomination.Playing both the egotistical, sex-crazed, evil Uday and the poor, family oriented good guy Latif. The performance of the two polaropposites are so great that you sometimes forget it's the same personeven when they are in the same scene. This is a very emotional movie, and even though you know how it will end you keep waiting for somethingbad to happen to Uday while pulling for Latif to be free. The actingall around is fantastic and the movie is a must see. This is a moviethat is almost impossible to not have strong feelings of hatred towardUday, and it brings back all the feelings you had while this reign wasstill in power. Overall, a great movie with great acting, especially anOscar worthy performance by Dominic Cooper. Watch this. I give it anA+.*Also try - Last King Of Scotland & Red State

He isportrayed as an immature moron, if this is fact, we will never know, but this character makes the film what it is, very good to watch. He is almost like a Frankensteins monster in his ways, and Cooperreally gives it his all.The narration and story is slick, and never slows the film, and theseedy, depressing parts, never make the film uncomfortable to watch. With it's hard subject matter, you would expect the film to be heavygoing, but surprisingly, it isn't, it's quite a bright film, and onethat delivers certain messages, but manages not to offend anyone.

The Devil's Bull****

What a laughable and stupid film, which is so inaccurate it really is awonder how they get away with making up such fiction and then trying tosell it as reality.Everyone knows Saddam and all his kin were evil and deserved what theygot there is no disputing this. However making a film that is almostentirely make belief with sprinkles of truth added to the mix of itsfiction, which glorifies this character and then likens him as scarfaceis just evil too. This film felt like a really bad cartoon from startto finish which turned reality into make belief. There are some storieswhich are just best left untold, especially when that country is insuch turmoil and is trying to rebuild itself from the many scars ofthose evils.I cannot rate this film because I find it incredibly distasteful.

No two people can ever be truly identical..

The Devil's Double. There may be many aspects of the film people willagree and disagree with but the title couldn't have been more accurate. The film tells the story of Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia - who isforced to become Uday's 'fiday' - his body double. From the outset thefilm places Latif in the life and environment of the Hussein family whoenjoy the best that life can offer them within Iraq. This is so muchthe case that the first five minutes of the film is used to introducethe wealth and power that is present in Uday's life. The bestresidence, cars, clothing and women - which is most important to Uday -are naturally present throughout the film. Another three minutes intothe film Uday has already outlined his desire that Latif is to work forhim. This told me the director either didn't want to spend too muchtime in Latif's previous life or wanted to stay true to real life andget straight to the point.. Latif will have known any disobediencewould risk his families safety and therefore the decision, if thereever was one, would always be to accept.Uday Hussein is the equivalent to King George III, 'The Mad King'. Toocareless to have such power, too reckless to be trusted with suchresponsibility and too mentally ill to be roaming free in a country. Hehas no care for anyone but his family, especially his father who hefears immensely. It is clear he will do anything to satisfy his ownneeds, which become more and more sadistic as the film proceeds. Latifon the other hand is exactly the opposite, he is a man who knows wrongfrom right and understands the experiences of the average family inIraq. He fills in at meetings, speeches and public appearances becauseit is his duty to but in private he despises the life that Uday revelsin. In fact it seems all of Uday's staff know he is quite possiblyinsane and are compassionate towards Latif, even Uday's women seem todesire Latif more despite their appearances being identical. I guesspersonality does come above looks after all.The story is set during the Gulf War but specific detail is placed uponthe invasion of Kuwait. We learn that it was Iraq's aim to acquireKuwait but the films emphasis is largely placed upon the personal livesof Uday and Latif rather than the political areas they could have goneinto. Through out we are shown how easily Uday can pick up women, howthere is no consequences when he kills another citizen and generallyhow much he brings shame towards himself and his nation, shame that cannever really be frowned upon even when he is partying on drugs andalcohol until he either passes out or stumbles around foaming at themouth. I did state before that I thought it'd be important to learnabout what it was like to be Saddam's son and this film does thatperfectly but it never really shows the life that the ordinary personin Iraq lives. The best thing to do it seemed was to not possessanything (including a daughter) that Uday might desire and then you canlive a perfectly happy and peaceful life.. I'm sure it wasn't thatsimple but still, at times during the film it sure feels that way. Theaction and violence isn't really used as often as I'd expect in a dramaof this sort but id still say its used effectively. Death, blood andgore is present so beware if you don't like surprises because thosescenes literally come out of no where, reflecting just how unstableUday is.As for the ending, it was just right in my opinion and wasn't over thetop at all, probably because the film is based upon a true story. Thereis also a brief amount of text that comes at the finish that willresult in you heading to Google to do your own personal research!Overall the film gives a decent insight into the state of Iraq'sleadership in the early 90's, the plot is undoubtedly entertainingdespite some repetition and the disturbing acts that Uday carries out.The effects and cinematography were excellent throughout butultimately, Dominic Cooper who plays the part of both the maincharacters makes this film great with his lunacy and ruthlessness inthe role of Uday and his class, strength and control in the role ofLatif.

Cinema Gold! Just look at the poster!

The Devil's Double starring Dominic Cooper in a Bravura performance, playing both leads, he is astounding. Never for a moment do you thinkhe is the same person, prosthetics and camera work aside he draws twovery distinctive character's and then a third as he portrays the doubleimitating the Devil! Incredible! In case you have been holed upsomewhere and know nothing of the story behind the movie, here goes.Latif Yahia (Cooper) is an Iraqi army officer taken from the front lineduring the Iran-Iraq war, he is brought to one of the palaces inBaghdad to meet an old schoolmate Uday Hussein (also Cooper) son of thepresident Saddam Hussein. In those times of war and uprising Uday needsa 'fidai' or bullet catcher, someone who he can send in when there is athreat to his safety or if he just doesn't feel like doing it himself. Uday offers Latif the job, but Latif declines politely and I won'tspoil the rest. Based on the true story of Latif Yahia and his bestselling book of the same name, the Devil's Double sticks pretty muchwith the book apart from some scenes where Lee Tamahori the directortook some poetic license. Don't expect it to be hugely political, it'snot. Don't expect it to be historically accurate either, it's kindathere but the producers and director have said that they purposelydidn't go down that road because they didn't want historians nitpicking. Maybe they should have because from other reviews I have seenthey're nit picking anyway! The Devil's Double is a great action packedthriller of a movie with fantastic performances from not one but twoactors playing 'Doubles' Philip Quast (Saddam Hussein) also playsSaddam's Double Faoz Al-Emiri ( I think I got that right) and althoughyou don't see too much of him you know instantly who he is when he's onscreen! I liked it, a lot actually and I will be seeing it again andprobably again, for all the controversy that has been kicked up I thinkit's going to be one of those movies that has lasting power and gainsmore and more credit as time goes on. Remember 'Scarface' wasn't such abig hit when it came out first, it was only over time that it garneredthe Iconic status that it has now. Watch it, make up your own mind, theprice of the ticket won't break the bank and you won't have to take outa second mortgage! But in Entertainment value it's cinema gold! Justlook at the poster! 10/10 **********

Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double.

Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double, great movie! As the firstof it's kind I think that they did well, being Iraqi myself ( I left inthe early 90's) I find it quite accurate, I can tell it wasn't actuallyfilmed in Baghdad but then who really wants to go there!?  For so longI've listened to critics here in the US saying the movie is too flashyor over the top but I lived in Baghdad during that time, believe me wewere more O.T.T than that! Iraq in the '80's had everything you couldwant, night clubs, bars, the best hotels in the world, Sheraton, LeMeridien etc, think of Dubai now, that was Baghdad then.  Anyway, I wasan officer in a special unit in the palace. So I saw a lot of stuff, itwas an open secret that Uday had a double, just like President SaddamHussein. It makes me laugh when there's controversy after 20 yearsabout whether Latif Yahia's story is true or not, I wonder who they'reasking for an opinion, some guy who left Iraq when he was three and hasnever been to the middle-east let alone Iraq! Or worse still the menwho Uday used to call 'friends',  it's of no importance really, Iraq aswe knew it is gone, President Saddam is dead.  Watch and enjoy, historically accurate or not it's one hell of a ride! Oh yeah, ifyou've ever watched any interview of the real Latif Yahia, that's whatUday sounded like, not as squeaky as they make him out to be in themovie. To capture Uday's brutality they would have had to dial it up anotch or twelve, I had the displeasure of seeing him in action inreality. We had a job to do, pretending we weren't there.   Does itglorify Uday, I don't know, I think that's for each person to decide.Am I proud of Latif Yahia for bringing his story to the world, absolutely. Because for each person that tries to rubbish him there aretwenty Iraqis who will defend him, he stood up against the regime andin the end he's the winner.

A very bad cartoon....

Imagine if Lloyd Kaufman had suddenly been given 20 million dollars tomake a movie. And now imagine if he hired a Jerry Lewis/Freddie Mercuryimpersonator to play the lead. Now imagine that its based on a truestory, but with all the truth muted to a glossy sheen. Now imaginereally bad CGI effects in place of old school FX.Welcome to the world of The Devil's Double, the supposedly true storyof Uday Hussein and his fiday or body double Latif Yahia. This could have been a remarkable film with real rounded characters anda story arc on the level of the best of Shakespeare. Instead, what weget is a very bad cartoon filled with poor drawings by poor animators.Shame really.

valleyjohn 2012-05-11 21:14:41

Less historical more hysterical.

Its a well known fact that back during his pomp , Saddam Hussein hadmany body doubles . It's not that well known that his oldest son , whowas a nut job , also had a double and this the story of Uday Husseinand his reluctant double Latif. The Devil's Double is an interesting story that is told in an over thetop extravagant way and is entertaining for the most part but i wouldhave liked this film much more if the director took it a little bitmore seriously. One of the problems is the lead actor Dominic Cooper . He plays thepart of latif really well but when it comes to playing Saddam's son hecant quite cope with the job. He goes well over the top and turn theman into a bit of a comical character and that's a real shame. It's still not a bad film but i would have much preferred thehistorical instead of the hysterical.
