The Cutting Edge

At the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary we see Doug Dorsey battered in a vicious hockey game against West Germany. We then see a Kate doing her program and falling when a lift goes bad. Both have fought all their life to get to the Olympics and suddenly the dream has been shattered. The movie then follows a tempermental but talented figure skater Kate through many partners until finally her coach resorts to recruiting a hockey player. Through the difficult training of 15 hours of skating a day they finally prepare for Nationals and the Olympics. A romance is budding and their final show could bend or break them as they try to achieve their dreams of an Olympic Gold medal.

A Quality Movie Showing Passion in Developing Relationships and Great Camera Work, Acting, and Direction

This movie was full of some very interesting surprises. The director,PaulMichael Glasser, is better known to most of us older folks or TVLandviewersas Starsky of the "Starsky and Hutch" televised cop show. His attentiontodetail, lighting and camera angles, character development, and his use ofsexual and romantic tension was impressive.Like "Tin Cup" and "A League of Their Own" (both of which were shot muchlater), "The Cutting Edge" caused me to truly focus on specific sports(those of hockey and figure skating) and to appreciate the athleticdevelopment process. Even if that process is not portrayed in a mannertechnically true to form within this movie, the leap of faith is an easyoneand you don't lose the passion or the intent of the story in watchingit. This movie also made me aware of D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly for thefirsttime. All of their later work, that I've seen, has been compared to thequality displayed within this one. Their portrayal of the development ofarelationship shows depth and insight and brings out the comediccharacteristics as well."The Cutting Edge" holds up well, even after repeated viewings. Thescenesthat first brought an emotional reaction from me continue to do so(surprisingly) just as strongly as they did the first time. It IS one ofmyfavorite movies. I would recommend renting or purchasing it as thetelevision version dilutes chemistry between the two main charactersbecauseof the commercial interruptions. However you get to see it, it is WELLworththe time.

This was very romantic!

I enjoyed this movie so much! The way that they did not reveal theirfeelings until the very end of the movie made it extra special. I do wishthat they would have told how they did at the Olympics though, I guess itcan only be assumed if they won or not. I loved the movie!

A Fond Memory Revisited

This review is from: The Cutting Edge - Gold Medal Edition (DVD) The Cutting Edge was first shown to me by an ice-skating friend about 15 years ago. When I saw it on Amazon for such a low price, I picked up a copy to watch with my wife. Maybe I am a bit soppy, but I loved the film (both times). It seems to balance just the right amount of action, drama, romance and good skating to hit the mark. I am sure it would be a hit with most any girl in her teens and wouldn't be surprised if her brothers and parents sneak a watch of it and thoroughly enjoy it in secret.

LOVABLE COMEDY

The movie was so great for.. it make me inlove specially to KATE(D.B. SWEENEY. She is so beautiful on that movie.. It is the movie that touch me a lot, the soundtracks of a movie and the story. the couple which they fall inlove with each other are mostly common in the movie, but this movie is such thing that u will touch ur heart.. "TOE PICKS".....!

Passionate

I think Moira Kelly is astounding in this movie. I believe she is oneof the most underrated actress's of our time. Her chemistry and emotionwith D.B. Sweeney is incredibly passionate. They act with suchintensity you start to believe it's really happening. At the beginningyou see how "icey" Kate is. But as the movie progresses and herrelationship with Doug starts to bloom she starts showing more emotion. You start to see the real Kate Mosley, not an uptight ice queen. Dougbrings out the best and worst in her. And he's right, "Don't say we'renot right for each other because the way i see it we may not be rightfor anyone else." I think this movie is so romantic and it's like it'sa reality t.v. show. To me it just seems that real. Their Passion andlove seems that real.

The Cutting Edge- A great romantic comedy

This is a great movie. It has great figure skating, and a romantic storyline. The characters have a great chemistry with one another with a great supporting cast as well. This video is a must have for a hopeless romantic like me.

My favorite old standby

Figure skating, romance, and snappy dialogue--who could ask for more? This movie always makes me laugh, even during the nth viewing. I watch it whenever I'm feeling blue.

One of the Top 10 I Ever Have Seen

Hey, this is one of the best films I have ever seen. Every time I seeit, it gets better. I have seen it over 10 times. These two kids werejust perfect for the rolls they played. I am disappointed I do not seethe names in leading roles in other pictures. But just take my wordfor it; this is one of the most delightful, suspense filled, goalachieving, stress filled sports movies with a love affair you will eversee. JUST DO IT.Each time I see the film I see more and understand newfeatures of the stressed relationships. And what a switch, whenshe finally falls for him in the bedroom while drunk, he turns herdown because of his respect and sense of honor; and it seemedso real.srg

The movie the cutting edge

I thought that was such a powerful story- the ice skater & hokey player together were awesome enough to carry a part two to me would be wonderful. The two made a wonderful couple and it was like a roller-coaster excitement every scene. I could watch it everyday it was just that entertaining!dp

A truly manly movie

I keep telling my girlfriend this is a guy movie, and this is how I see it...A rugged hockey player named Douglas Dorsey (DB Sweeney) is on the verge of greatness. He's in the Olympics and his career is on cloud nine. He's nearing a lucrative NHL contract that will set him up with millions. A massive, if not illegal, check from a foreign hockey goon sends his career, his health, and his life into a tailspin. In walks the Russian coach (or is he a spy?) Pamchenko to change his world. He links Douglas up with vixen Kate Mosley (Moira Kelly), a virtuoso on skates whose heart is just as cold as the ice on which she effortlessly glides. Her weapon of choice: the deadly toe pick. TOE PICK! Her beauty, brains, and ruthlessness rival that of any Bond villain. Under the tutelage of the Russian, the two team up to take over the world and fill their pockets with gold...via the unjust scoring and judging system of the Olympics.Without a single on-screen sex scene or bloody hockey fight painting the ice red, Dorsey's vigor and testosterone must carry the majority of the movie. He's left to fend off another threatening injury - a head shot - while overcoming his partner's tendency to fold under pressure. To overcome the Russian's evil, communist plot he'll have to battle enemies at every stop, bed a gorgeous redhead spy from a heated rival while placating his neurotic partner, and pull off a miraculously daring last feat of flying athleticism that leaves his enemies and Jackie Chan in awe. Is it too much to accomplish? Does he have too much to overcome? It's a rip-roaring good time - complete with a superb early 90s action montage - that is sure to keep everyone interested all the way to the enjoyably predictable end. What?

The infection of passion binds the heart and frees a soul.

I must confess this is one of my all time favorite films. My heart is drawn to romantic comedies, lives drawn to transformation and beauty. I experience all three connections every time I watch this story again and again. The story revolves around the sport of couples olympic skating as approached from to very unlikely directions. The story seemed quite plausible including us in the drive shared by our main characters and their step by step progress through ups and downs to the very exciting conclusion. The workouts were rigorous and the skating footage very powerful and thrilling. The romantic energy was electric and compelling as well as the ache of hearts moving foward and apart in the dance of fear and indecision. This movie feels like what we wish life was and, by the way, can be. Include this in your favorite story collection, today.

Combination love story, sports drama,

This movie has personal significance for me because my friends have alwaystold me that my personality resembles D.B. Sweeney's character. While it istrue that the movie starts out with a non dramatic and seeminglypredictableform, the twists and turns adding the sports drama make this movie one ofthe top sports movies ever made. D.B. Sweeney's charisma is a greatcombination to Moira Kelly's arrogance and knack for shooting down Dougwithintelligence and grace. More importantly is the inspiration which derivesfrom these two characters as they overcome obstacles to shoot for thecoveted gold medal

Excellent Movie

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have probably watched it over a dozen times. The sequels do not compare to the original.

Excellent Movie

D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly shine in this tale of love on the rink. With excellent chemistry, the two bring to life the story of Doug and Kate, two ice skating partners who don't want to be partners (at first). This movie has all the elements of a great film: great lead actors, great supporting actors, and a great script. Defiately worth adding to your video collection (in fact, buy a second copy for when you wear the first one out!). END

I'm a pushover for a good romance.....

This review is from: The Cutting Edge (DVD) What can I say? I loved it! Soundtrack fits, actors fit their roles precisely, chemistry is "on", and oh, yes, we are worrying about the Olympics while the romance evolves. I've seen it four times and I like it more each viewing!

Sweet.. and more nifty one-liners than you may recall,,,

I echo the warm sentiments expressed by many here at IMDb -- this isclassic 40's type romance, filmed mostly in my hometown, Hamilton,Ontario, with pleasant skating choreography, and a rousing, poundingSoundtrack, including some great 'straight-up' Blues tunes. And, if youhaven't seen it in awhile, there may be more great one-liners than yourecall! D. B. Sweeney (awesome as 'Shoeless Joe' in '8 Men Out') plays DouglasDorsey, an ex-hockey player recruited to pair up with spoiled, buttalented brat, Kate (the charming Moira Kelly) in 'pairs' skating. Shecouldn't cut it with any of her previous 'traditional' partners - whyshould she succeed with this 'Neanderthal'? Well, if she wants to wingold, she will have to find a way - rich daddy has run out of options. He has the best (Russian) coach Pamchenko (played by ageless RoyDotrice, now 85 years young! - recall him as Mozart's overbearingfather in 'Amadeus'), but Dad's dream of a Gold medal requires aworking partner for his mercurial daughter.Meantime, we are treated to some memorable stuff: Dorsey (to Kate'sfinancé): "If I was you, I'd invest in blindfolds" (response to "Idon't like to see Kate hurt") "When I played hockey, I had 2 helmets -one for the game, and one for just before the game" (explaining hispenchant for vomiting before tense competition). Pamchenko to Dorsey, who threatens to walk out early in his audition: "And 'Gretzky' - I amthe last person who is going to come looking for you" (a lesson foranyone who won't accept that their last chance has arrived).8/10

Flawed but still a memorable movie

If you can remember that it's just a movie and do not dwell too long on the fact that it could never happen....it is a great movie. I don't believe there is a single hockey player out there that would turn to figure skating should a hockey career not work out. And it is an insult to figure skating to think that an ice hockey player could become an internationally ranked pairs skater in such a short length of time. But if you keep in mind that this is just a fun movie and all you expect is entertainment...then this movie will deliver for you. There is good chemistry between the characters and cute dialogue. And one of the BEST movie lines of all time....TOE-PIIIICK!
